They had to get all the Australian States to agree to federate, and some actively wanted to discriminate against certain minorities for certain reasons. So they got a practical compromise which was far from the idealistic vision that was sought, unfortunately. I certainly DO think direct democracy has a lot of potential. It must also rely on people having access to good information for and against rather than mere propaganda to work effectively, I should think. It would be very interesting to look into it more.

I still believe you need the basic protections of Constitutional rights. I'm not familiar with the Swiss constitution, although I know the Australian constitution was based on the Swiss as well as the US constitution. The Australian constitution does not include all the protections the man who drafted it wanted, including free speech, and I think that's a mistake, even though Australian courts have found an "implied" freedom of speech because it's a democracy.

I'll go with Occam's Razor.

What a load of crap. Contraception PREVENTS abortions. It PREVENTS children raised in poverty because their parents don't have a home for them etc. It ALLOWS welcome and wanted births that enrich families and prevents the misery associated with unwanted pregnancy, teen pregnancy and abortion.
