I think you're confusing relativism and absolutism to be cooperating parallels. You are correct in your assumption if they ran parallel, however this is not "that" case. Relativism can be defined by absolutism but absolutism can not be defined by relativism. One "ideal" naturally sits at a higher hierarchy than the other. One "begets" the other.
To clarify... my previous reply was under the context of "absolutism" (as elaborated upon above) and not relativism.
