Georgia Voter Group Founded By Stacey Abrams Under Investigation For Allegedly Registering Out-Of-State, Dead Voters

Stacey Abrams’ voter registration group, The New Georgia Project, is one of three such organizations now under investigation by the Georgia Secretary of State amid concerns that certain voting rights groups were “seeking to ‘aggressively’ register ‘ineligible, out-of-state, or deceased voters’ before the state’s Jan. 5 Senate runoff election,” according to Fox News. Abrams’ group, as well as America Votes and Vote Forward, are largely credited with putting Georgia in play for Democrats in the 2020 presidential election. Abrams even recently credited her own efforts to register Georgia voters and fight what she termed “voter suppression” with helping to secure a win in Georgia for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters say those results are flawed. The president’s legal team demanded a hand recount in the state and, although a judge tossed a Trump campaign lawsuit seeking to overturn Georgia’s election results, per CNN, litigation on behalf of the president is ongoing. Both of Georgia’s Senate seats are still up for grabs and, as a result, so is control of the Senate. Those seats will be decided in a runoff election on January 5th, with Republican incumbent David Perdue squaring off against Democrat John Ossof for Purdue’s seat and Republican Kelly Loeffler up against Raphael Warnock for the seat vacated by the death of John Lewis. Loeffler was appointed to the seat in 2019. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Fox News says, is concerned that activist organizations who worked to impact the presidential election are hard at work ahead of the runoff election, and Raffensperger has “issued warnings against efforts to register individuals who are ineligible to vote in Georgia’s runoff elections or to encourage people to come to Georgia with the sole purpose of casting ballots.” “Raffensperger’s office on Wednesday said the investigations are into groups including America Votes, Vote Forward and The New Georgia Project — which was founded by Abrams and previously chaired by Democratic Senate candidate Raphael Warnock,” the outlet continued. “I have issued clear warnings several times to groups and individuals working to undermine the integrity of elections in Georgia through false and fraudulent registrations,” the Georgia Secretary of State’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. “The security of Georgia’s elections is of the utmost importance.” Raffensperger said that claims have been made against several voter rights organizations and “I will investigate these claims thoroughly and take action against anyone attempting to undermine our elections.”

Those claims include attempts to register out-of-state voters — “telling college students in Georgia that they can change their residency to Georgia and then change it back after the election” — as well as deliberately sending absentee ballots to vacant addresses, to individuals known to be deceased, and to voters living in other cities. Abrams’ group, the New Georgia Project, is accused of “[soliciting] voters living out of state and people who have passed away.” In one case, Raffensperger’s office says, a “Fulton County resident” reported “receiving five postcards from The New Georgia Project soliciting a registration ‘for the same dead person.'” The Georgia Secretary of State says there are more than 20 investigators on the case, tracking down at least 250 separate leads.

Sidney Powell’s Election Lawsuit in Georgia Gets Expedited Appeal

A federal appeals court agreed on Wednesday to expedite the appeal in a case brought by lawyer Sidney Powell against election officials in Georgia.

A judge on Sunday blocked election officials from wiping or altering Dominion Voting Systems machines in three counties, but Powell was seeking a statewide order, prompting her to seek an emergency appeal from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

The appeals court on Dec. 2 granted the emergency appeal, ordering plaintiffs to file their initial brief by midnight and defendants to file their response by midnight on Dec. 4. Plaintiffs can file a response to the response by midnight on Dec. 6.

The initial brief wasn’t listed on the docket as of early Thursday. Plaintiffs later filed two affidavits and an expert report from Matthew Braynard.

A Dec. 4 hearing scheduled in front of the lower court judge who made the initial ruling was postponed in light of the appeals court order.

Also on Wednesday night, the Democratic Party of Georgia entered an emergency request to grant an intervention so they can participate in the appeal. The party is being represented by Washington firm Perkins Coie, a longtime Democrat-linked company. The request was granted on Thursday.

Powell is representing about a dozen voters who argue there was a fraudulent scheme to manipulate the vote count to make sure Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden won Georgia.

Powell is seeking to have outside experts examine Dominion machines. Georgia election officials are attempting to prevent that from happening.

The case is Pearson v. Kemp, 1:20-cv-04809.

Joint Chiefs chairman says permanent basing overseas needs reconsideration

The military’s top officer, and the president’s senior military adviser, is joining a growing chorus of senior defense officials who have questioned the need for permanently stationing troops around the world.

Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, shared concerns on Thursday that the post-World War II/Cold War-era model of sending troops and their families overseas for years-long tours is no longer the best idea.

“I think it’s time we take a hard look at that,” Milley said during remarks at the virtual Washington Defense Forum. “I think we have too much infrastructure overseas, and too much permanent infrastructure.”

That large and obvious presence is an insurance policy for some allies, he said, as it makes them feel safe from adversaries like Russia, China and North Korea.

“But I think from a strategic standpoint and an operational standpoint, I’m not so sure that is a strong move,” he added,

That presence puts a target on American troops, and more importantly, the families they bring with them to duty stations in Japan, Korea, Germany and more.

“I have a problem with that,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with us, those of us in uniform, being in harm’s way ― this is what we get paid for. This is what our job is, right?”

The answer is probably more rotational deployments, he added, like those that already happen in Korea, Germany and Guam, where U.S.-based units forward deploy for nine months, or so, without making a full permanent change-of-station move.

The Defense Department has been making baby steps in that direction for several years, with the Army’s brigade rotations to Korea and Germany, and, more recently, the Air Force’s bomber task force to Guam, among others.
