Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Vice President Pence on Wednesday evening imploring him to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) shared the letter on Twitter writing, "I am sending a letter with

The push to end Trump's term before Jan. 20 comes just hours after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol as Congress was ratifying the Electoral College votes showing President-elect Joe Biden was victorious.

"It is with great sadness that we write to you following the incidents that unfolded at the U.S. Capitol today. As you presided over the U.S. Senate, angry supporters of President Trump attempted an insurrection, illegally storming and breaching the U.S. Capitol building to stop the certification of President-elect Biden's victory," the lawmakers wrote.

They went on to cite the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which provides an avenue through which the vice president and Cabinet can remove a sitting president who is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office."

"Even in his video announcement this afternoon, President Trump revealed that he is not mentally sound and is still unable to process and accept the results of the 2020 election," the lawmakers wrote to Pence.

"For the sake of our democracy, we emphatically urge you to invoke the 25th Amendment and begin the process of removing President Trump from power. President has shown time and again that he is unwilling to protect our Democracy and carry out the duties of the office."

Original sin mike pence wanted to backstab Trump, become the Republican nominee in 2016

Vice President Mike Pence was working with former RNC Chair Reince Priebus and Republican Party leadership to oust President Donald Trump from his position as the party’s presidential nominee in October of 2018, following the potentially politically damaging release of audio of the President, now referred to as the Billy Bush Tape, according to a senior Trump campaign official who later served in the Trump administration in audio dated to 2018.

In the audio, obtained by National File but recorded at a time when most Republicans had no reason to be upset with Pence, the Trump campaign official explains that Pence was approached by Priebus and the Republican Party establishment, in the form of GOP Chairs from a critical mass of states, and agreed to take President Trump’s position at the top of the ticket.

“They had contacted enough state chairmen, they were going to do something under the rules to change candidates,” said the Trump campaign official. “They were pressuring Pence to say, ‘Okay I’m good with it.'”

“Pence’s wife is begging, is telling him to do it,” the official explained. “Pence assured Reince that he’s okay with it, he’s on board. That’s on a Friday.”

When the person conducting the interview expressed doubt that Pence would have been willing to commandeer the Republican Party ticket with only weeks to go before the critical 2016 election, the source explained that Pence was willing to do whatever was asked by the Republican Party and Priebus.

“Pence said, ‘I’m good with it. If this is what the party wants, if they want to change candidates three weeks before the election, if this is the only shot we have to win.'”

The official then explained that this was in October, and related to the infamous Billy Bush Tape. He also confirms the rumor that Priebus, while sitting at a table with President Trump, Steve Bannon, and other top 2016 campaign officials, pressured Trump to resign. After that, he explains, Priebus began working with Pence to oust President Trump.

“They were openly discussing this on Pence’s plane,” said the campaign official. “They had some staffers that came from the Trump campaign that actually took notes and funneled it back to Trump Tower.”

“So over the weekend, Trump calls Pence in, basically calls him a liar, a hypocrite, and just rips him a new one, gives him all the information where he knows that Pence has been working behind his back. And says, ‘If you want to do this, then I’m going to call you out as being a liar.'”

Our source explains that President Trump’s threat to expose Pence’s willingness to betray both President Trump and millions of Republican voters was enough to force Pence into submission.

“Pence walks it back, goes back Monday morning, and tells Reince and his wife to stand down,” said the official. “His wife threw a big fit.”

“That afternoon, everybody who worked for the Trump campaign [and] was on that plane, they get pulled off. And the only people that were allowed to travel with Pence were his own team. ”

The source also explained that the reason Pence refused to endorse President Trump in 2018 is because he was offered a $3 million campaign contribution from Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign manager, Jeff Roe, in exchange for his endorsement.

Congress Affirms Biden Electoral Win After Tumultuous Day at Capitol

The process began at 1 p.m., when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell convened a joint session of the House and Senate to certify the states' Electoral College results and affirm Joe Biden's status as victor of the Nov. 3 vote.

In recent years when these have occurred, the process took all of 20 to 40 minutes.

But this time around, it took more than 14 hours to get to the result: Biden 306, Trump 232.

The differences were twofold: For one, lawmakers had to allow for challenges to some states' electoral tallies. Urged on by President Donald Trump's weeklong effort to discredit the election as a result of massive election fraud, many Republican senators and congressmen were disputing Biden's win in multiple battleground states. Each time an objection had the support of at least one senator and one representative, the two chambers had to break into separate sessions for two hours of debate and voting.

This happened with the results of Pennsylvania and Arizona. Both objections failed.

The bigger delay, though, was the hourslong melee at the Capitol, with demonstrators rushing past armed police and storming the building, occupying and vandalizing it and forcing lawmakers' evacuation. Many lawmakers said the invaders had been egged on by Trump, who rallied with them earlier and reemphasized his claims of voter fraud while urging a march to the Capitol during the historic electoral session.

The day turned violent, necessitated the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies and the National Guard, and resulted in at least four deaths, one attributed to a lethal gunshot wound.

But when order was eventually restored, lawmakers insisted on a return to the day's business as a show of resolute resistance to violence. That day's business ultimately turned to a night's business, and then an early morning's business, but those lawmakers were intent on finishing what they started.

A few Republicans shifted their stance on electoral objections in the wake of the unprecedented disruption. It ultimately didn't impact the outcome, though, since enough Republicans and Dems favored certification to dim the chances of any meaningful Electoral College reversal.

And so around 3:30 a.m. ET, the final Electoral College reports were certified.
