Robinhood Raises $1 Billion to Meet Surging Cash Demands

Robinhood Markets Inc. raised more than $1 billion from its existing investors, an infusion meant to help the company meet rising demands on its cash stemming from frenzied trading in GameStop Corp. and other hot stocks.

Robinhood and other brokerages in recent days have experienced a surge in trading volume in a small number of stocks, prompting the clearinghouses that help process and settle trades to ask them for more cash to cover the transactions. To help manage those demands, Robinhood raised fresh equity late Thursday, the company said Friday. It also tapped its credit lines with banks.

Because of a lag between when investors book new positions in a stock and when their cash is actually exchanged for securities, brokerages like Robinhood have to maintain deposit accounts at the clearing firms that help finalize trades. Clearing firms, such as the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., require brokerages to post more of their own money in riskier times to insure against losses.

Robinhood’s swelling popularity—it was ranked as the top free app in Apple Inc.’s app store on Wednesday, according to App Annie—combined with the trading boom to prompt an unprecedented increase in Robinhood’s deposit requirements, Chief Executive Vlad Tenev said in an interview late Thursday. Robinhood restricted investors’ ability to purchase shares in GameStop and 12 other companies on Thursday to try to limit future increases in those requirements.

“We haven’t really been in a situation where we see the intersection of financial services and social media,” Mr. Tenev said.

Italy G20 presidency to push for debt relief, new IMF drawing rights

Italy, this year’s president of the Group of 20 rich and emerging nations, will push its members to extend debt relief to poor countries struggling to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, a top official from Rome’s G20 financial team told Reuters.

Italy was also confident the Biden presidency would herald a more cooperative stance from the United States on international financial cooperation, particularly in areas such as climate change and helping the poorest states.

“We must grant fiscal space to the low income countries in greatest difficulty,” said Gelsomina Vigliotti, Italy’s Treasury director general for International Financial Relations, setting out the country’s priorities for its presidency in an interview. Vigliotti said Italy, which took the helm of the G20 in December, would push to extend until end-year the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) freezing bilateral debt-service payments for more than 40 countries.

Restrictions enacted to combat the pandemic have hit poor countries especially hard and threaten to push millions into extreme poverty. Many countries that already faced crushing debt levels before the crisis have to restructure their loans or face default.

The DSSI, promoted by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and agreed by the G20, was introduced in May last year and is currently due to expire this June.

“Debt will certainly be a very important theme of the Italian presidency,” Vigliotti said.

To further help poor countries, Italy will also urge the G20 to back the new issuance of $500 billion of the IMF’s own currency, known as Special Drawing Rights (SDR), the Italian G20 official said, describing this as “an absolute priority.” Donald Trump’s previous U.S. administration had blocked the idea of a new SDR issuance, a move akin to a central bank printing money, saying it would provide more resources to richer countries because their allocation would be proportionate to their IMF shareholding. Vigliotti rejected this argument, saying rich countries that don’t need their allotted SDRs can give them back to the IMF facility that can in turn lend to poor ones.

“The goal is to ensure a new allocation of SDRs are made available to the countries most in need,” she said, adding that there was a “general consensus” on the subject within the G20. “We count on the fact the new (Joe) Biden administration will have a different attitude on the issue,” she said. Separately, a French G20 official also told Reuters that Paris was encouraged by signs that Biden will not block new SDRs as Trump did.

In general, the United States’ change of government has already had a “tangible” impact on G20 affairs, Vigliotti said, with a more constructive and multilateral approach to climate change and sustainable financial investment. Italy’s G20 presidency has got off to a rocky start with the collapse of the government in Rome when a junior partner pulled out of the ruling coalition. Vigliotti played down the domestic political turmoil, saying it would not change the country’s G20 programme already agreed with its partners.

Favouring a fairer and more sustainable international tax system will be another priority of the Italian presidency, she said. Rome hopes to broker a broad agreement by June on the taxation of digital economy and global minimum corporate taxation levels, she said, based on preparatory work carried out by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“Failure to reach a deal would have negative consequences, it would weaken confidence in the ability to find multilateral solutions,” she warned.

Facebook shuts stock trading group after GameStop frenzy

Facebook Inc took down a popular Wall Street discussion group, Robinhood Stock Traders, in a move its founder said was an unjustified response to conversations that have buoyed shares in GameStop Corp and other companies. GameStop, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc and BlackBerry have been at the centre of a market battle as individual investors coordinating on social media, including Reddit, and using trading apps such as Robinhood, bought shares and squeezed hedge funds that had bet big the companies would fall.

Allen Tran, a 23-year-old from Chicago who created Robinhood Stock Traders, said he woke up on Wednesday to a notification that Facebook had disabled the 157,000-member group. The notification, seen by Reuters, said without detail that the group violated policies on “adult sexual exploitation”. “We were first on the picking tree to be cut off because we are on Facebook, not a free platform like Reddit,” said Tran, referring to the typically lighter moderation on the discussion website. Some of his group’s members made tens of thousands of dollars in trades first popularised on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum, he said.

Tran, who also runs the 20,000-member HaiKhuu Trading group on chat app Discord, said he has never seen adult content on the Facebook group. Facebook spokeswoman Kristen Morea said: “This group was removed for violating our Community Standards, unrelated to the ongoing stock frenzy.” She did not respond to requests to elaborate.

Following Reuters’ report it had been removed, the Robinhood Stock Traders group was restored, said Tran, adding that Facebook did not say why. Facebook previously suspended his group on Jan. 7 after labelling it a “dangerous organisation,” according to correspondence seen by Reuters, although the company reinstated it after he appealed to contacts there.

Tran expressed concern that another group he formed to carry on discussions will also be taken down.

Gensler to Step Down as CFTC Chairman

The WSJ is reporting that Goldmanite Gary Gensler has declined an invitation from President Obama to serve a second term as CFTC Chairman, and will leave the CFTC by the end of the year.

Apparently Goldman no longer needs their man at the CFTC now that the agency’s 5 year “investigation” into silver market manipulation has been put to rest.

As the WSJ reports, Gensler will step down by the end of the year. This follows Tuesday’s news that the CFTC’s head of enforcement David Meister (who has followed Gary Gensler step by step like a baby rat throughout his career) will step down as early as Tuesday. Meister had reportedly not yet begun searching for a new job.

We suspect Mr. Gensler won’t have to put forth any effort searching for a new gig, as his successful handling of the silver manipulation incident for his bankster employers has no doubt kept him in line for a much more prominent and rewarding position.

The WSJ reports that new commissioner Mark Wetjen, former CFTC enforcement chief Geoffrey Aronow, New York Law School professor Ronald Filler and Assistant Treasury Secretary Timothy Massad are among those being considered to succeed Mr. Gensler.

The NY Times also names Amanda Renteria as a candidate for Gensler’s vacated position, and Ms. Renteria likely has fairly short odds of receiving the nomination, considering her pedigree as a fellow Goldman alumn.

Swiss National Bank signs new deal with Swiss government to potentially increase payouts

The Swiss National Bank has agreed a new deal with the Swiss government which could see the central bank increase its annual payments to Bern and the country’s local governments to 6 billion Swiss francs ($6.7 billion). The new profit distribution agreement covers the financial years from 2020 to 2025. Under the previous arrangement, the SNB could make a maximum payout of 4 billion francs.

The SNB has faced calls from some politicians in recent weeks to help support the economy, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 downturn and lockdowns introduced to tackle the virus. The increased payment will be made “if the SNB’s financial situation permits”, the central bank said on Friday. The full payout will be made if the SNB makes a profit of 40 billion francs.

The SNB said earlier this month it expected to make a profit of around 21 billion francs for 2020 as soaring gold and stock markets boosted the value of its foreign currency assets. After taking into account the bank’s distribution reserves, its 2020 net profit will be in the region of 98 billion francs, meaning it will make the full 6 billion franc payout for 2020. The SNB makes a profit from its vast holdings of foreign currency investments built up during its long campaign to slow the rise of the safe-haven Swiss franc.

The bank currently holds 910 billion francs worth of foreign currency assets, including stakes in companies like Tesla and Apple.

Eyebrows were raised on social media after former US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) official Laura Unger made a “revealing” comment comparing the frantic buying of GameStop and other stocks to the US Capitol riot.

Unger, who became a commissioner at the SEC in 1997 and was made acting chairman by George W. Bush for half of 2001, joined CNBC’s ‘Closing Bell’ on Thursday to give her thoughts on trading app Robinhood halting and then limiting the buying of stocks in companies such as GameStop and AMC, which saw significant boosts to their values after a buying frenzy by individuals motivated by a subreddit group this week.

The chaos in the marketplace, Unger claims, is “not unlike what we saw on January 6 at the Capitol,” referring to the storming of the Capitol by pro-Donald Trump supporters – a riot that led to five deaths, including that of a police officer.

“If you don’t have the police in there at the right time, things go a little crazy,” she said. She did acknowledge, however, that the happenings in the stock market were a kind of crazy of a “lesser degree” than the violence the country saw in Washington, DC earlier this month.

It is, however, the same “platform-created frenzy that people are operating under,” she added, saying Wall Street was living through “trying times.”

According to Unger, the SEC could suspend trading on certain stocks and investigate whether specific market manipulation is happening through a concerted effort, or whether people have a legitimate interest in what they are buying.

While the buying frenzy has been described as market manipulation by Unger and other stock experts, the limiting of individuals in buying stocks by apps such as Robinhood has drawn the ire of many on both sides of the political aisle, from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York). Portuguese parliament approves legalization of euthanasia despite last-minute attempt to delay vote

Euthanasia is to become legal in Portugal after the country’s parliament voted on Friday to allow terminally ill patients to seek assistance from a doctor to end their lives, becoming only the seventh nation in the world to do so.

The euthanasia law was passed with 136 votes in favor, 78 against, and four abstaining.

The move means that people over the age of 18 can request assistance to die if they are suffering from “lasting” and “unbearable” pain. The law states that only national citizens and legal residents will be able to request medical assistance to end their lives.

Politicians voted in favor of proposals aimed at changing the law in February 2020, setting up Friday’s vote despite opposition in the Catholic-majority country and a campaign by the Church for a national referendum on the issue.

The timing of the vote has also come into question with opposition party PSD (Social Democratic Party) seeking to postpone it, claiming the Covid-19 pandemic had created “great anxiety, great fear among people that has to do with issues of life and death.”

However, parliamentary leader of the People-Animals-Nature party, Ines Real, rejected this criticism, noting: “It is dishonest to invoke an extremely difficult moment in the country… to confuse deaths related to Covid-19 with the legislative process that aims to allow euthanasia to those suffering.”

The final step in the legalization process rests with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who previously said he would respect parliament’s vote and sign the measure into law.

Neighboring Spain also legalized euthanasia in December under strict conditions and despite fierce opposition from the Church and conservative parties.

Robinhood CEO accused of ‘lying’ on CNN after claiming he halted stock purchases to adhere to vague ‘regulatory requirements’

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev is facing a heavy backlash after he attempted to defend his trading app’s decision to stop users from buying certain stocks, claiming it had “no choice.”

Tenev was interrogated by CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Thursday amid the Robinhood-GameStop stocks controversy, with the CEO claiming his decision was made to adhere to vague “regulatory requirements” and not to protect wealthy hedge funds that were shorting the stocks.

After Cuomo highlighted the irony of the company being called Robinhood – a legendary outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor – when the company of the same name appears to be “doing exactly the opposite,” Tenev insisted: “That’s not what it is at all… We had to make a very difficult decision to protect our customers and our firm.”

When Cuomo referenced Robinhood’s connections with Citadel Securities, a firm that facilitates trades on the app and that bailed out Melvin Capital, the hedge fund targeted by the Redditors, Tenev maintained its relationships with any other company had “nothing to do with” its decision to halt trading.

“Robinhood, as a brokerage, has lots of financial requirements, SEC [the US Securities and Exchange Commission] requirements,” Tenev said, though Cuomo shot back that the SEC “hasn’t said you had to do this.”

Tenev concluded by denying that Robinhood took action on the orders of any other market entity, and again blamed the decision on unspecified requirements.

Viewers were not convinced by Tenev’s excuses, however, lambasting the CEO in CNN’s YouTube comments, with some accusing him of “lying” and “dodging every single question.”

“Of course he did exactly what his corporate overlords wanted. He is no different than any other hedge fund douche,” one user suggested, while another called Tenev’s story about regulatory “requirements” a “BS answer.”

On Twitter, others asked Tenev to cite any regulation that required him to halt trading on the stocks. Another said he looked “unprepared” and mistakenly thought he could “word salad” his way out of it.

Robinhood prohibited its users this week from buying stocks in a number of companies, including GameStop, Nokia, and BlackBerry, after they had been invested in by a group of amateur traders, resulting in billions of dollars worth of losses for Wall Street hedge fund short-sellers.

Several members of Congress, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI 13th District), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY 14th District), have publicly called for an official hearing over Robinhood’s actions.

Did you vote for the Great Reset? Did anyone you know vote for the Great Reset? If this ‘fundamental shift’ really is underway then it’s certainly not something any of us asked for or planned for or should be expected to accept without demur.

But this is the bit where it gets really scary.

The technology exists to make that transition. What we’re missing is a force, a, er, a collective will to actually make that change, not in an incremental way. So our main focus is to identify key stakeholders whether from the corporate world, whether from the NGOs, who really get that and who really want to push the boundaries to do transformative work and to hopefully create an unstoppable force.

Note that at no point is Levene asking how best to give people what they want (ie the free market system which has made us more prosperous and given us more choice). Rather he is seeking a top down imposition of something he just knows is good for everyone whether they like it or not.

Biden Administration Affirms Support for Protectionist Jones Act, Throwing Hawaiians, Puerto Ricans to the Sharks

Pandering to maritime unions means higher costs and harsher lives for coastal minority populations.

President Joe Biden may have said on the campaign trail that Puerto Rico should become a state, but that doesn't mean he supports laws that make it a viable, economically competitive state if doing so means angering maritime unions.

In an executive order signed Monday and in subsequent comments, Biden made it abundantly clear that he supports the Jones Act, a 1920 federal law that requires that cargo ships traveling between American ports be made in America and owned and crewed by American citizens:

The executive action I am taking also reiterates my strong support for the Jones Act and American vessels, you know, and our ports, especially those important for America's clean energy future and the development of offshore renewable energy.

The Jones Act is an absolutely terrible law, designed purely for protectionist measures, that shields maritime companies and unions in the United States from competition. The consequence of the Jones Act is that a foreign commerce ship that goes to states like Hawaii or Alaska or to territories like Puerto Rico can engage in domestic trade in only one American port. It can travel to other American ports but cannot take on or deliver goods unless it goes to a foreign port and then returns. A vessel from Japan that's heading to Los Angeles cannot also stop in Hawaii along the way and engage in commerce, despite the logical economic efficiencies in doing so.

Supporters of the Jones Act insist that these protections are necessary to sustain American jobs and to maintain a viable shipping industry. But those arguments are not supported by the data. In reality, as researchers with the Cato Institute have found, American shipyards have been in a long decline as a result, and most of the ships we build are almost entirely for use in our own waters. It's cheaper to build large vessels overseas than in America, but since they cannot operate in America due to the Jones Act's requirement, U.S. shipping companies can't buy them.

The end result for the shipping industry has been completely backward. America produces fewer ships, by weight, than much smaller countries like Italy and Germany. It also hamstrings American competitiveness in international shipping because it costs more to operate U.S. vessels than their foreign counterparts. U.S. ships engaged in international trade aren't bound by the Jones Act, but they're all also foreign built.

If you purchased a call for $5 and the call is now worth $300, IF you exit you position (sell your call to close the position) you have amde a $275 profit on that one call.

A call is a contract - yes, it has a number of shares 'attached' to it but you don't trade in the shares themselves.

I should know as I have traded calls and puts myself. I am not interested in the share price but the option (call or put) price and how much time is left before it expires.

To give you a real world example from something I actually did….

I purchased put options (betting on the market to fall) on Dell for $5 with an expiry of 3 weeks. They were cheap because they were way below where the market was in realtime.

I bought 7 of them for a total cost of $35.

On the day of expiry the shares drop like a tank and the put options became valuable to the tune of $100 each because the price went below where I had purchased the put options and due to that the options were now 'in-the-money' and reflected (to a degree) the real value of the actual shares themeselves.

Total profit for the entire trade was $665.

That's nearly a 2,000% profit.

OWS never published financial statements or disclosed the identities of its funders at any point during its operation, although the sums involved in launching and maintaining a messaging platform used by a vast number of people internationally over several years were surely significant.

Rosenfeld alleges the app “never [took] VC funding or sought investment” at any point during that time, and quite how much money was involved in total is a mystery.

It’s clear though that at least $2,955,000 was provided by the Open Technology Fund (OTF) 2013-2016, and the organization’s website refers to Signal being “originally developed with OTF funding.”

The site is also home to a dedicated OWS profile, which boasts of how the OTF “enabled the OWS team to continue providing Signal at no cost around the globe and adapt their operations for a growing user base.”

The OTF was created in 2012 as a pilot program of Radio Free Asia (RFA), an asset of US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which is in turn funded by US Congress to the tune of $637 million annually.

In August 2018, its then-CEO acknowledged the outlet’s priorities “reflect US national security interests.”

RFA’s own origins harken back to 1948, when National Security Council Directive 10/2 officially authorized the then-newly created Central Intelligence Agency to engage in operations targeted at communist states, including propaganda, economic warfare, sabotage, subversion, and “assistance to underground resistance movements.”

The station formed a key part of this effort, along with Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberation From Bolshevism, later Radio Liberty – it broadcast unrelenting propaganda in China, North Korea, Vietnam and elsewhere.

In 2007, the CIA’s official website stated these “psychological warfare” initiatives were among “the longest-running and successful covert action campaigns” the US ever mounted.

After the CIA’s role was made public in the 1970s, Congress took over running and funding the stations, before in 1999 they were grouped along with other state-run media entities under the umbrella of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, USAGM’s forerunner.

GameStop: Will the Real Keith Gill Please Stand Up

The Wall Street Journal has an article up naming Keith Gill as the fellow that started the GameStop mania at WallStreetBets. The article says that Gill “until recently worked in marketing for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.”

According to FINRA’s BrokerCheck, a Keith Patrick Gill, employed at a subsidiary of Massachusetts Mutual, MML Investor Services, has held trading licenses since 2012 and got his Series 7 stock trading license in 2016. On November 1, 2016, FINRA shows that Gill received his Series 24 Principal’s license, making him eligible to supervise other licensed brokers. FINRA also shows that Gill has worked for three trading houses since 2012.

Could there be two Keith Gills working for MassMutual? Yes there could. But it would certainly behoove the Wall Street Journal reporters to revisit their reporting.

If the guy who started the GameStop mania has passed a multitude of trading exams showing his knowledge of exactly what constitutes market manipulation, this is a whole new ballgame.

Chinese Bombers Carried Out "Simulated Attack" On USS Roosevelt Carrier Near Taiwan

Tensions spiked in the South China Sea and near Taiwan over this past weekend and have continued boiling since, after Chinese PLA aircraft made repeat in incursions into Taiwan's claimed airspace. In response Taiwan's Air Force scrambled jets in its own 'show of strength' deterrence message, and with the US aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt in the region, China's Defense Ministry subsequently warned Taipei on Thursday that"independence means war".

A new report in FT that broke overnight now reveals that the Sunday incident was even more alarming for the prospect of direct conflict than previously thought. FT cites unnamed intelligence sources to report that "Chinese military aircraft simulated missile attacks on a nearby US aircraft carrier during an incursion into Taiwan’s air defense zone three days after Joe Biden’s inauguration, according to intelligence from the US and its allies."

We earlier noted that on Sunday Taiwan reported a huge PLA aerial incursion for the second straight day, on Sunday counting well over a dozen fighter jets that included six J-10 fighters, four J-16s, two SU-30s, a Y-8 reconnaissance aircraft and two Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft. They were apparently escorting Chinese H-6 long range bombers. "Airborne alert sorties had been tasked, radio warnings issued and air defense missile systems deployed to monitor the activity," Taiwan's defense ministry had said.

The FT report adds more previously unknown context to the incident:

People familiar with intelligence collected by the US and its allies said the bombers and some of the fighter aircraft involved were ''conducting an exercise that used a group of US Navy vessels led by the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the same area as a simulated target.''

Pilots of H-6 bombers ''could be heard in cockpit conversations confirming orders for the simulated targeting and release of anti-ship missiles against the carrier, the people said.''

As the US carrier group observed the inbound Chinese bombers from below, there's little doubt that "fingers were on the trigger" in preparation to respond if all hell broke loose.

An analyst at Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research cited in the new FT report, Su Tzu-yun, underscored the PLA aircraft are precisely capable of delivering devastating anti-ship missiles.

"The Su-30 [fighters] can carry Kh-31 anti-ship missiles, and the H-6 bombers and J-16 fighters can both carry YJ anti-ship missiles," said the analyst.

"All three aircraft are clearly a display of threat against surface ships," he added.

There's also little doubt that President Biden has been briefed, and the incident will prove an immense hurdle when it comes to the administration's expressed hopes of improving relations with China following Trump's long-running pressure campaign against Beijing.

This is quite possibly the biggest single act of escalation to date, despite multiple "close calls" and encounters over the past two years in the South China Sea.

Mexico has received $2.38 billion from its annual oil hedging program for 2020 in the fourth quarter, the finance ministry said on Friday, a lifeline for an economy pushed deeper into recession by the coronavirus pandemic.

The oil hedging program, the world’s largest financial oil deal, is designed to protect Latin America’s second-largest economy against oil price crashes.

Democrats Introduce Bill To 'Massively Expand' Mail-In Voting

Democrat lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill dubbed the “Vote at Home Act,” which seeks to “massively expand vote-at-home ballot access,” enacting automatic voter registration and providing voters with pre-paid ballot envelopes.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) introduced the bill (pdf), saying in a press release that the legislation is meant to “fight voter suppression.”

“Our democracy is stronger when every American can vote, without standing in ridiculous lines or having to take time off work or school to exercise their Constitutional rights,” Wyden said in a statement.

The initiative stands in contrast to a bill introduced by Republicans several weeks ago, which seeks to tighten voter registration verifications and narrow rules for when and how mail-in ballots can be accepted, in a bid to strengthen the integrity of federal elections.

The Democrat lawmakers said the introduction of the bill was encouraged by what they described as “the successful expansion of voting at home and by mail in the November 2020 election,” in which almost 50 percent of voters cast ballots by mail, a record high in federal races.

“Last year we saw a widespread expansion of vote-at-home access as a safe and secure way to participate during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Blumenauer said in a statement. “We should continue to make voting easier, not harder. This important bill would strengthen and clarify the right to vote at home, the most secure and convenient way for voters to exercise the franchise.”

Critics of expanding vote-by-mail initiatives have warned of the increased potential for voter fraud, allegations of which were front and center in the contested presidential election, with President Donald Trump, members of his legal team, and supporters, making numerous claims that amounted to the charge that the election was stolen.

Peter Navarro, who served as an adviser to Trump, concluded in a sweeping report on the integrity of the 2020 election that the allegations of irregularities, including outright voter fraud, were serious enough to warrant an urgent probe and substantial enough to potentially overturn the results.

State election officials, the Justice Department, and others rejected the notion that there was widespread voter fraud in the November election.

The Democrats’ “Vote at Home Act” stipulates a range of actions that would expand vote by mail in federal elections.

“All registered voters would receive ballots in the mail weeks before Election Day, allowing them to carefully research candidates and issues well ahead of Election Day to inform their vote,” the press release states.

The bill would also grant all registered voters nationwide the ability to cast their ballots by mail or at ballot drop boxes. The act also calls for increased funding for the U.S. Postal Service to cover costs associated with processing ballots.

“This would allow states to save money by transitioning away from polling stations and reduce a major barrier for voters with the federal government absorbing the cost associated with USPS delivery,” the press release notes.

Under the provisions of the bill, states would also be required to automatically register voters when they provide identifying information to the state motor vehicle authority. Voters who do not want to remain registered would be given three weeks to opt out.

The House Republican bill, meanwhile, called the “Save Democracy Act,” seeks to create baseline protections against election irregularities and voter fraud during elections.

The GOP initiative seeks to prevent automatic voter registration for federal elections, prohibits states from sending out unrequested absentee ballots, and calls for a ban on using public ballot collection boxes.

Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), said in a press statement, “This bill will restore the public’s trust that their vote is counted and their voice is heard.”

Iron Fist Of The Market: Wall Street Protects Hedge Funds From The Little Guy

Wow, another roller coaster ride for the market that saw major indices rocket higher, then stumbled into the close. But the broad market could have set itself on fire, and no one would have noticed. All eyes continued to watch the short squeeze saga, which took an unsurprising, but dastardly turn for the worst for individual investors.

Wall Street didn’t put its collective finger on the scales, but it put an iron fist on the side of hedge funds. Several trading platforms, including Robinhood, denied individual investors the right to buy certain stocks. Hint, the stocks that hedge funds have heavy short positions. It was the kind of boldfaced move that only Wall Street could pull off.

Imagine watching a boxing match, and the 500-to-1 underdog is winning, on the verge of a knockout, then the referee pulls out a set of brass knuckles. He hits the underdog on the head, and the whole time, the announcer describes the dramatic blow and altered momentum as an inevitability.

All this happens while also wagging their fingers at others, thinking of beating the champ. Later, the referee says he assaulted the long shot pugilist to save him from getting hurt later in the bout. Bizarre? It could only happen in an old Jerry Lewis movie for laughs.

It happened in plain sight yesterday. The investing world picked hedge funds over individual investors. And did the latter dirty. It’s heartbreaking and bewildering. I think it’s illegal. And if it’s not, it should be. And while we are on the subject, there must be rules against 140% of a company’s float being sold short, borrowed, and sold over and over and over again.

This concept smacks of collusion, manipulation, and disdain for the dreams and aspirations of smaller investors. And while we are on the topic, these short campaigns are not about price discovery or taking advantage of potentially overpriced stocks.

These campaigns destroy companies. Period. The good news is Congress is looking into this. The bad news is these shorts, including players in the current drama - have pumped a lot of money into the coffers of prominent politicians, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Perhaps the saddest part of it all is Robinhood took aim at its customers.

Ohio Lawmakers Introduce Bill To Declare June 14 ‘President Donald J. Trump Day’

Ohio Republican state reps Jon Cross and Reggie Stoltzfus announced Friday that they are seeking co-sponsors for a bill that would recognize the date of June 14 as “President Donald J. Trump Day” in the interest of celebrating one of the greatest presidents in American history.”

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Cross and Stoltzfus declare, “Former President Donald J. Trump was our 45th President of the United States and against great odds, accomplished many things that have led our nation to unparalleled prosperity.”

June 14 is President Trump’s birthday, and also overlaps with Flag Day.

“Let’s show the 3,154,834 Ohio voters (a record historic number of votes received for President in Ohio) who cast their ballot to re-elect Donald J Trump that we as a legislature recognize the accomplishments of his administration, and that the Ohio house believes it is imperative we set aside a day to celebrate one of the greatest presidents in American history,” the memorandum reads.

The statement concludes, “President Donald J. Trump personified the emotions of millions of Ohioans who for too long have felt marginalized by our government and the American political system, adding, “this legislation will help ensure that for one day each year the voice of millions of people from all corners of our state will be commemorated.”

Facebook Bans "Robinhood Stock Traders Group" With 157,000 Members

Facebook has banned a group called ‘Robinhood stock traders’ that had 157,000 members, with its founder suggesting the group had been targeted by “major institutions.”

The group has no formal affiliation with the stock trading app of the name same that froze stock purchases for GameStop yesterday, prompting widespread complaints from its users.

The group’s 23-year-old founder Alan Tran told Reuters that the social media giant removed the page citing “adult sexual exploitation,” but provided no further reasoning for the ban.

According to Tran, who also heads up his own investment group, HaiKhuu Trading, bots may have flagged the page because of the use of the term “gain porn,” which is a phrase relating to stock purchases and has no actual sexual connotation.

Earlier this month, the group was also listed as a “dangerous organization,” but this label was subsequently removed by Facebook and the page was restored.

“The major institutions are attempting to silence our community. We are positively impacting people’s lives and they are attacking our group because we are more powerful than them,” Tran wrote in a Facebook post, arguing “there is power in masses.”

Tran has now set up a replacement page, although he expects that to be deleted too, saying Facebook is “not a free platform.”

Earlier this week, a Discord server used by the WallStreetBets community, the Reddit forum responsible for the populist-driven surge in Gamestop stocks, was banned with Discord alleging that it had contained “hate speech.”
