Fact check: Antifa.com redirects to Joe Biden's website, but Biden campaign allegedly not involved

Sep. 2, 2020 updated 3:58 ET Sep 17, 2020

The claim: Antifa.com redirects to Joe Biden's campaign websiteViral Facebook posts insinuate ties between Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and the left-wing, anti-fascist political movement antifa.

"if you go to Antifa.com, it takes you directly to joe bidens webpage. … whats that tell ya … try it yourself," Facebook user Johnathan Thurman wrote in a post that has been shared more than 80,000 times since Aug. 28. Several other Facebook posts claim the same, and videos show the redirect to viewers.

Thurman, whom USA TODAY reached out to via Facebook Messenger, said he knew no further details about the redirect.

Fact or fiction:We're fact checking the news and sending it right to your inbox. Sign up here

Breaking down the domain's history

A search through the digital internet archive Wayback Machine reveals the antifa.com domain has existed since 1999, although no content appears until Dec. 4, 2000. It is unclear who registered the domain, but the content appears to be a predominantly European anti-fascist newsletter available in English and Dutch.

The domain lapsed. It was renewed April 24, 2002, according to domain registration databases Whois.net and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers Lookup. It was never made into an active website.

On Nov. 21, 2008, the domain was offered for $14,410 and remained on sale until May 6, 2017, at which point, a blank page replaced the sale offer. The blank page persisted until another "domain for sale" notice appeared Aug. 10, 2019.

The website was probably bought before or around May 31. Twitter user The Rude Pundit noticed the domain's sale price was nearly $37,000.

"We Are Antifa: Join Us & Take Action Antifa.com," declares text at the top of the home page. Hashtags sympathetic to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement are also visible. Below, a symbol used by the original anti-fascist group, Antifaschistische Aktion, founded by the Communist Party of Germany in 1932, appears in red, black and white.

Days later, more information was added in an extensive paragraph rebutting President Donald Trump's tweet May 31 vowing to designate "ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization." For a brief time, the website redirected to a YouTube channel before announcing June 25 that an updated website was coming soon.

Biden's site gets tied to antifa

Traffic redirecting to JoeBiden.com began around Aug. 8 before stopping Aug. 13.

On Aug. 16, the domain resumed but forwarded instead to a website called "It's Going Down."

On Aug. 21, traffic redirected to KamalaHarris.org, which was being forwarded to JoeBiden.com. On Aug. 22, it went back to "It's Going Down"; and on Aug. 28, it returned to KamalaHarris.org before settling on JoeBiden.com on Aug. 31.

Domains and redirection

Antifa.com has been registered through NameCheap, a Phoenix-based domain registrar – a company that manages internet domain names, as well as IP address assignments for those domains – since April 2002.

Redirecting a domain to any website is not hard to do. According to Mashable writer Matt Binder, all it requires is "that you type in the URL you want your domain to redirect to in your registrar’s administration panel."

Since NameCheap offers a privacy protection service to its clients, it is impossible to know who exactly owns the domain and set the redirection. USA TODAY was unable to reach NameCheap CEO Richard Kirkendall for comment.

Matt Hill, deputy national press secretary for the Biden campaign, referred USA TODAY to a tweet Monday from Biden's digital director, Rob Flaherty.

"So whoever owns http://antifa.com is redirecting it to our website as a troll. … The VP very obviously has/wants nothing to do with fringe groups," Flaherty said.

Our ruling: Missing context

We rate this claim as MISSING CONTEXT.It is true the antifa.com domain redirects to JoeBiden.com.It is unknown who exactly owns the domain and has been redirecting traffic to the Biden campaign's website. The claim lacks context given that the Biden campaign denies any association with the antifa.com website.

Nasdaq, New York Stock Exchange sue SEC over planned overhaul of public data feeds

Nasdaq Inc and the New York Stock Exchange have each sued the Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking to block a plan by the regulator to overhaul public data feeds that broadcast stock prices to investors, court filings show. Under the SEC plan, approved in December, supply and demand data for stocks would be added to public feeds, broadening access to the information which the exchanges currently sell to professional traders at a premium. “Nasdaq believes the SEC exceeded its authority by adopting an ill-considered remake of market structure,” a Nasdaq spokeswoman said in an emailed statement. The plan “would make equity markets overly complex and increase hidden costs for investors”, the statement said. The filings were made in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District Of Columbia Circuit.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Cboe Global Markets, which operates the Chicago Board Options Exchange, was also suing the SEC over the issue. Cboe did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The lawsuit is the latest legal action taken by the exchanges against the SEC in recent years, which include a successful challenge to a proposed experiment by the SEC to cap trading fees on 1,400 different stocks.

The SEC is also dealing with other suits. In October, Citadel Securities sued the commission over its decision to approve a new mechanism for trading stocks at exchange operator IEX Group Inc.

What Is the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)?'

The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) is an American company that owns and operates financial and commodity marketplaces and exchanges. It was founded in May 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. ICE operations include futures exchanges, cash exchanges, central clearing houses, and market services for off-exchange trading. ICE operates futures exchanges in the U.S., Europe, and Singapore. Its cash exchanges include the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NYSE ARCA, NYSE National, NYSE AMEX Options, NYSE ARCA Options, and NYSE Chicago. ICE also operates six central clearing houses: ICE Clear U.S., ICE Clear Europe, ICE Clear Singapore, ICE Clear Credit, ICE Clear Netherlands, and ICE NGX.

In May 2000, ICE was founded by Jeffrey C. Sprecher, a power plant developer who wanted to create a more transparent and efficient platform for over-the-counter (OTC) energy commodity trading. Compared with manual trading, the new platform provided greater price transparency, efficiency, liquidity, and had lower costs. Sprecher received backing from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, BP, Total, Shell, Deutsche Bank, and Societe Generale.

Covid-19 Vaccine: Gene Therapy Risks

The Death of Jesse Gelsinger, 20 Years Later

By Meir Rinde | June 4, 2019

CRISPR is a fundamentally new way to change genes. The basic technology consists of an enzyme that cuts DNA and a segment of guide RNA that tells the enzyme where to snip. The package may include other components, such as a new piece of DNA code to plug into the edited area. The cell’s natural repair mechanism completes the edit. Scientists can deliver CRISPR using AAVs, as Editas is doing, but that’s not the only option; CRISPR can be encapsulated in bubbles of fat, injected directly into cells, or sent through a hole created by an electric current, among other techniques. Editing is meant to occur when the enzyme comes in contact with the target DNA, and only then.

“The hope that we have now for CRISPR technology is that it literally is a way to program enzymes to go to exactly the place in the DNA where a change is desired, and nowhere else, and make a precise alteration,” Doudna said. “It’s a very different way of altering genomes that is controllable. The potential is clearly very, very exciting.”

But cell biology is complex, and learning how to avoid unintended consequences remains a work in progress. Last year, for example, two groups of researchers said they found a possible problem when they tested CRISPR on retinal cells and stem cells. The intended edits often didn’t work because they triggered a cell’s p53 gene, which responds to DNA damage by telling a cell to self-destruct. The gene plays an important role in keeping mutations from becoming cancerous, yet CRISPR worked better in cells with a dysfunctional p53 gene. In other words, CRISPR apparently subverted one of the body’s disease-fighting mechanisms, making healthy cells die and allowing potentially cancerous ones to remain.

No one has seen lab mice get cancer after CRISPR treatment, but it’s unclear if they have been observed long enough to allow tumors to develop. In the French SCID study, the children were diagnosed with leukemia years after their treatment. Potential long-term side effects are a concern with gene therapies because the treatments are basically permanent; they can’t be washed out of the body the way a conventional drug often can. The discovery of the p53 issue and the uncertainty about its importance are reminders that scientists simply don’t know everything that could happen when CRISPR is put into a human body.

Wilson said the question of whether a gene edit could inadvertently cause mutations elsewhere in the chromosome and cause cancer in a patient, much as SCID gene therapy caused leukemia, will not be resolved soon. “It’s definitely a theoretical concern, and it’s going to be a challenge to quantify what the risk is. That’s going to be a huge challenge,” he said.

That doesn’t mean clinical trials of CRISPR-based therapies shouldn’t happen, but it does affect the risk-benefit calculation, he said. Many patients with devastating diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and Huntington’s disease, as well as certain cancers and rare diseases for which few treatments are available, will accept the unknown chance they’ll experience some harm from an experimental therapy if it also might lessen their symptoms or extend their lives.

Trials that include such patients are ethically acceptable, whereas the possibility of serious side effects may make trials of less urgent therapies unacceptable. A clinical trial of a CRISPR-based treatment for color blindness, for example, might not be worth the risk.

“For [gene] editing you’re going to be focused for a while on diseases in which there is significant unmet need, not a lot of alternatives, and where the risk tolerance would be higher,” Wilson said.

“It’s going to be a long road before we get to the point where editing would be deemed safe enough for diseases other than those that have really significant morbidity and mortality,” he added.

Biotech firms go to great lengths and spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to make sure their products are effective and safe, but preclinical testing in animals and cell cultures goes only so far. Bosley said during her talk at the Science History Institute that the only way to see if a treatment really works is to put it into a person.

“The genetic context of a mouse or a rat has nothing to do with human genetic context. You just can’t know. You are taking a greater leap into the unknown with these kinds of experimental medicines,” she said.

“The FDA has learned lessons, the industry has learned lessons, and I think we are all seeking to be very careful in how we advance,” she said. Yet “the risk never goes away. That’s what it takes to make new medicines.”

Jesse's legacy - 2011 SPRING - Stanford Medicine Magazine

by Rosanne Spector

Eleven years after his son’s death, the heartbreak in Paul Gelsinger’s voice is clear. Jesse Gelsinger would have been 29 today. Instead his name is synonymous with the colossal failure of a clinical trial.

Jesse Gelsinger was born with a rare and sometimes fatal metabolic disorder, ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency syndrome, which causes ammonia to build up in the blood and can cause liver and nerve damage, lethargy and coma. Jesse’s case was not severe, and he was able to live a relatively normal life, controlling the disease through medication and diet. At 18, on Sept. 9, 1999, he entered a clinical trial run by the University of Pennsylvania aimed at developing gene therapy for infants born with the illness. His motive was pure altruism, as any treatment from the trial would most likely have had no impact on his life. Eight days later he was dead, apparently having suffered a massive immune response to the virus that was a component of the trial’s injections. Jesse Gelsinger became the first person ever publicly identified to have died in a clinical trial for gene therapy.

An investigation by the federal Food and Drug Administration found widespread problems. These included conflicts of interests, researcher misconduct and the failure to tell the young man and his family about the potential hazards of participation in the clinical trial.

If a young person’s death can ever be said to have meaning, Jesse’s did — it forever changed clinical research. His legacy is a warning to all researchers about the dangers of clinical trials with human subjects.

Gelsinger spoke about clinical trials and ethics with Paul Costello, the School of Medicine’s chief communications officer.

Costello: Eleven years after your son’s death, do you think that human subjects are any safer?

Gelsinger: The system hasn’t changed dramatically — not enough for me to be comfortable with it.

Costello: Why do you say that?

Gelsinger: I worked at this for seven, eight years, and I became really frustrated with the lack of change. The only changes that came about were at institutions where they got caught — institutions that were found to be lax in their ethical review and conduct in research. The University of Pennsylvania has a model program now, but it’s only because of what happened to Jesse there and the awareness it brought about. Unless this happens at many more institutions, and we have some concise guidelines for ethical conduct, I’m not really comfortable that things have changed enough.

Costello: What do you think are the most significant gaps that need to be addressed?

Gelsinger: For me, the primary one is conflict of interest related to financial matters. A lot of researchers have a financial stake in what they’re working on — they’re involved with companies that have a stake in the outcome of the research. And a lot of the medical institutions have ownership in these companies. The money puts blinders on people. Going after prestige is part of it too, but primarily it’s the money.

In my case, I came to see that these were not bad men who did this; these were very qualified scientists. It’s the companies pushing for these technologies. They want results, and they put pressure on these researchers, and so the researchers push the envelope further than they should.

Costello: I’m sure people have sought advice from you over the years about whether they should participate in clinical trials. What do you tell them?

Gelsinger: I try to steer away from giving advice, but if it’s somebody I know personally, then I just advise them: Be very careful. There are a lot of hidden things going on that you’re most likely not aware of. Try to get an advocate, somebody who’s got a lot of medical knowledge and can be there to ask the right questions and find the answers that you need.

Costello: What’s your message to those in government who oversee clinical trials?

Gelsinger: The whole system should be spending a whole lot more money on the ethical oversight of research, and they should be pushing for it all the time.

Costello: What has your experience with clinical trials taught you?

Gelsinger: I never will trust the system again. It was my first and only experience with clinical research, and you can be sure that I will not participate in a clinical trial, probably even if it would save my life.

A lot of researchers have a financial stake in what they’re working on

cont…

Costello: You wouldn’t ever, ever participate in a clinical trial?

Gelsinger: The system’s not trustworthy yet. We need to get walls up to prevent financial conflicts of interest. Companies that want to do research shouldn’t be the sponsors, directly, of that research. They should not be able to have any communication with the researchers directly. There should be intermediaries that handle the money and the information. We should get this thing so it’s right and ethical. But I don’t see that happening. I think the laws that are in effect are there because of pressure from the financial interests that stand to benefit.

I’m a far less trusting person than I used to be, and that’s a shame. I want to trust people, and especially the medical profession, and it was just such a disappointing, disheartening experience. I still rely on doctors. I just had knee surgery this year, but I ask a lot of questions that have doctors raising their eyebrows at me.

Costello: What do you ask?

Gelsinger: Well, I get into, “So, how did you come to use this technology?” and “How many patients have been treated?” and “What kind of negative effects is it having?”

Costello: I read that you scattered Jesse’s ashes at Mt. Wrightson, outside Tucson where he grew up. I wondered if you ever return up there and if you do, what are your thoughts when you’re standing there?

Gelsinger: I haven’t been there in about four years because my knees started giving me so many problems. One of my goals is to be able to hike up to that mountain again. And I know they had to do clinical research to develop the implants that would make that possible.

Costello: So your message isn’t stop clinical trials. Your message is get it right.

Gelsinger: Absolutely. Get it right. Go about it with the same intent that my son had. He had a heart of gold. What he did wasn’t for himself, it was for others. Hopefully the system can work the same way he did.

Do we know who killed Ashli Babbit yet?

https://twitter.com/AmyKremer/status/1359375866581680130

the answer is NO

The officer's name is still no yet known. Neither is the name of the source of this article. Nor those who investigated the incident.

No charges recommended for officer who shot Ashli Babbitt during Capitol riot, source says

Investigators have determined the Capitol Police officer who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt during the U.S. Capitol riot should not be charged with any crimes, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that police investigators have recommended the officer not be charged, although the U.S. Attorney's Office will make the final decision on the matter.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran and ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump, was shot during the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

Videos show rioters who made it into the building breaking glass on doors near the House Chamber, which were blocked haphazardly from the inside with chairs in an attempt to prevent the mob from entering. As Babbitt tried to climb through the shattered glass, she was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer who fired at her once.

The officer, who has not been identified by Capitol Police or investigators, "used clear appropriate use of force. It's not even a close call," said the officer's lawyer, Mark E. Schamel.

she was unarmed - not even close???

this story smells.

The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign That Saved the 2020 Election

A weird thing happened right after the Nov. 3 election: nothing.

The nation was braced for chaos. Liberal groups had vowed to take to the streets, planning hundreds of protests across the country. Right-wing militias were girding for battle. In a poll before Election Day, 75% of Americans voiced concern about violence.

Instead, an eerie quiet descended. As President Trump refused to concede, the response was not mass action but crickets. When media organizations called the race for Joe Biden on Nov. 7, jubilation broke out instead, as people thronged cities across the U.S. to celebrate the democratic process that resulted in Trump’s ouster.

A second odd thing happened amid Trump’s attempts to reverse the result: corporate America turned on him. Hundreds of major business leaders, many of whom had backed Trump’s candidacy and supported his policies, called on him to concede. To the President, something felt amiss. “It was all very, very strange,” Trump said on Dec. 2.“Within days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner, even while many key states were still being counted.”

In a way, Trump was right.

There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans. The pact was formalized in a terse, little-noticed joint statement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO published on Election Day. Both sides would come to see it as a sort of implicit bargain–inspired by the summer’s massive, sometimes destructive racial-justice protests–in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace and oppose Trump’s assault on democracy.

Time Magazine: ‘Secret,’ ‘Well-funded Cabal’ Worked to ‘Protect’ 2020 Election

Time magazine has published a detailed account of what it describes as a “conspiracy” between “left-wing activists and business titans” to create “an extraordinary shadow effort” to “protect” the 2020 presidential election.

The New York Times had reported on the effort in January, referring to the “Democracy Defense Coalition.” The Daily Beast hinted at it in the fall. But the Time article is the most in-depth report at what others suggested was going on behind the scenes.

The article by Molly Ball, titled “The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign That Saved the 2020 Election,” presents the effort as a heroic effort to preserve a free and fair election, and to fend off President Donald Trump’s anticipated claims of fraud.

Ball’s description, however, also matches what she calls a “paranoid” view of an effort to make it difficult for Trump to win:

Time Magazine Describes Cabal That Rigged 2020 Election

Leftists totalitarians are convinced that they have it all wrapped up now. They are not worried about backlash, future elections, protests, dissidents, or anything else. If they didn’t think the game is over, Time Magazine — the flagship magazine of the liberal establishment — would not run a nearly 7,000-word piece detailing the left-wing cabal that ensured Biden would win the 2020 election.

As noted at Breitbart,

‘Where is the line between global business & attempts to control society?’ Putin asks Davos as he calls out power of Big Tech

Technology giants have become powerful rivals to governments, but there are doubts over the benefits for society of their monopoly positions, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin told the annual World Economic Forum, on Wednesday .

“Where is the line between a successful global business, in-demand services and consolidation of big data – and attempts to harshly and unilaterally govern society, replace legitimate democratic institutions, restrict one’s natural right to decide for themselves how to live, what to choose, what stance to express freely?” Putin wondered.

“We’ve all seen this just now in the US. And everybody understands what I’m talking about,” he added.

The Russian leader was apparently referring to the crackdown by Big Tech corporations like Twitter, Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon, mostly on Donald Trump and his supporters, during the recent presidential election in the US.

The companies, which, according to some critics, sided with Democratic candidate Joe Biden, blocked President Trump’s social media accounts over accusations of inciting violence, with the same being done to many pages of groups and individuals who’d backed him.

However, one-sided bias claim voiced by some might be an overestimation – the accounts of Democrats supporters were also subject to restrictions, but on a much smaller scale.

Conservative Twitter-like platform Parler was also forced offline, and now there are calls to block the Telegram app as well.

These events have shown that Big Tech companies “in some areas have de facto become rivals to the government,” Putin said.

Billions of users spend large parts of their lives on the platforms and, from the point of view of those companies, their monopolistic position is favorable for organizing economic and technological processes, the Russian president explained. “But there’s a question of how such monopolism fits the interest of society,” he stressed.

Impeachment Sequel To Go Straight To DVD

February 9th, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.—While Impeachment is a beloved classic that was released in theatres a year ago, the short-awaited sequel Impeachment 2: The Reckoning is going to be released straight to DVD, sources confirmed Tuesday.

Due to budgetary concerns and lack of interest, the movie will skip theatres and go straight to home video. The plot of the new film is said to be a straight rip-off of the first film, but with a lot more crying, posturing, and grandstanding. Many critics have said the new movieis predictable and boring, with some claiming it's entirely pointless.

"Yeah, I mean, the first Impeachment was OK, but did we really need a second one?" wrote movie reviewer Landon Giles. "It's just superfluous at this point. Yeah, yeah, orange man bad, we get it. The big bad guy in this one isn't even the president this time! He's just some private citizen! And all the same old dialogue is rehashed. It's just not fresh anymore."

According to sources, the third Impeachment movie will be directed by Rian Johnson and will feature the impeachment managers being old and bitter on an island while they milk alien cows.

Unusual first-day rallies in SPACs raise bubble concern: ‘Every single one of them has gone up’

The red hot SPAC market is getting even hotter in 2021, raising concerns about rampant speculation detached from reason that could leave retail investors fresh off the GameStop bust holding the bag. Not only are special purpose acquisition companies raising a record level of capital — more than $30 billion so far for its biggest quarter ever — pre-merger SPACs are also seeing an outsized pop on the first day of trading.

New deals this year recorded an average jump of 6.5% on their debuts, a nearly six-fold increase from their historical levels (from 2003 to 2020, the average first-day return of SPAC IPOs is only 1.1%), according to University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter. Unlike traditional IPOs where debut pops are generally viewed as sign of healthy investor appetite and bullish market environment, SPAC initial rallies are less rational in nature. These blank-check companies are empty corporate shells that raise money from investors and then merge with a private business within two years, while taking it public. So when yield-hungry investors bid up prices of blank-check deals, they are essentially taking a leap of faith betting on something without valuation or an actual business. Many believe the rise in SPAC prices could be a sign of speculative behavior in a new bull market with massive liquidity and unchecked animal spirits. There are signs that the SPAC boom is getting caught up in the retail trader-fueled market frenzy. Bank of America’s client flows showed that retail investors represent 46% of trading volume in SPACs on its platform in January, up from about 30% two months ago. In comparison, the retail crowd takes up only about 20% of S&P 500 trading on Bank of America’s platform.

There is an allure in getting an early piece of a SPAC deal for many retail investors eyeing high-growth start-ups. However, since the majority of individual investors buy SPAC common shares on the open market, they would most likely miss out on the first-day pop. Plus, many brokers don’t offer trading of SPAC warrants, which are a deal sweetener that offers early investors more compensation for their cash. In fact, for buy-and-hold investors who only get in after a deal is struck, they almost always lose money. For the 114 companies that went public via SPAC mergers in the past 10 years, investors lose 15.6% on average if they buy a merged company’s common shares on the first day of trading and hold it for a year, according to Ritter. And they lose 15.4% on average if they hold the shares for three years.

However, it’s a different story for institutional investors. Hedge funds and other players who participate in SPAC IPOs are often able to get offer pricing of $10 plus the benefit of warrants. They also tend to sell shares once the merger is completed, which could have a negative impact on prices.

Oil prices turn higher as EIA reports a nearly 7 million-barrel weekly drop in U.S. crude supplies

The Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that U.S. crude inventories fell by 6.6 million barrels for the week ended Feb. 5. The data compared with the average decline of 2.7 million barrels forecast by analysts polled by S&P Global Platts. The American Petroleum Institute on Tuesday reported a 3.5 million-barrel decrease, according to sources. The EIA data also showed crude stocks at the Cushing, Okla., storage hub edged down by 700,000 barrels for the week. Gasoline supply, meanwhile, climbed by 4.3 million barrels, while distillate stockpiles were down 1.7 million barrels for the week. The S&P Global Platts survey had forecast a supply increase of 2.7 million barrels for gasoline and a decline of 1.7 million barrels for distillate inventories. March West Texas Intermediate crude CLH21, 0.19% moved up, trading 11 cents, or 0.2%, higher at $58.47 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices were at $58.18 before the supply data.

Glen Greenwald on the firing of Guardian reporter for reporting on US aid to Israel

Glenn Greenwald

@ggreenwald

I hope people on the right, deeply and justifiably concerned with how media outlets casually fire people the minute they express a banished view, will look at what happened here & vehemently condemn it even if they disagree with the punished view.

The Guardian is utter shit:

https://mobile.twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1359530637749805063

Nathan J Robinson

@NathanJRobinson

One of the most serious threats to free speech is the silencing of criticism of the government of Israel.

I have now found this out the hard way, having just been fired as a Guardian columnist for sending a tweet about US military aid to Israel

I knew that this sort of censorship happened. I have long argued that the most pernicious “cancel culture” is the one directed toward pro Palestinian speech. But I was shocked at how blatant it was. They were very clear I was being fired for criticism of US policy

toward Israel.

Losing a job right now is really difficult. Very clear how effective this is in keeping people silent. At-will employment means writers can be put under high pressure to not say anything politically that their boss disagrees with. You can see how easily opinions are stifled.

I am lucky, however, that I have an independent platform at my own small leftist magazine. This means that I have more ability to speak, because I can survive without getting another newspaper column. If I was freelance it would be much more difficult.

Stellar article from Greenwald on the stazi-state of journalism

The Journalistic Tattletale and Censorship Industry Suffers Several Well-Deserved Blows

The NYT's Taylor Lorenz falsely accuses a tech investor of using a slur after spending months trying to infiltrate and monitor a new app that allows free conversation.

A new and rapidly growing journalistic “beat” has arisen over the last several years that can best be described as an unholy mix of junior high hall-monitor tattling and Stasi-like citizen surveillance. It is half adolescent and half malevolent. Its primary objectives are control, censorship, and the destruction of reputations for fun and power. Though its epicenter is the largest corporate media outlets, it is the very antithesis of journalism.

I’ve written before about one particularly toxic strain of this authoritarian “reporting.” Teams of journalists at three of the most influential corporate media outlets — CNN’s “media reporters” (Brian Stelter and Oliver Darcy), NBC’s “disinformation space unit” (Ben Collins and Brandy Zadrozny), and the tech reporters of The New York Times (Mike Isaac, Kevin Roose, Sheera Frenkel) — devote the bulk of their “journalism” to searching for online spaces where they believe speech and conduct rules are being violated, flagging them, and then pleading that punitive action be taken (banning, censorship, content regulation, after-school detention). These hall-monitor reporters are a major factor explaining why tech monopolies, which (for reasons of self-interest and ideology) never wanted the responsibility to censor, now do so with abandon and seemingly arbitrary blunt force: they are shamed by the world’s loudest media companies when they do not.

Just as the NSA is obsessed with ensuring there be no place on earth where humans can communicate free of their spying eyes and ears, these journalistic hall monitors cannot abide the idea that there can be any place on the internet where people are free to speak in ways they do not approve. Like some creepy informant for a state security apparatus, they spend their days trolling the depths of chat rooms and 4Chan bulletin boards and sub-Reddit threads and private communications apps to find anyone — influential or obscure — who is saying something they believe should be forbidden, and then use the corporate megaphones they did not build and could not have built but have been handed in order to silence and destroy anyone who dissents from the orthodoxies of their corporate managers or challenges their information hegemony.

The deal that the American elite chose to make with China has a precedent in the history of Athens and Sparta

The Thirty Tyrants

In Chapter 5 of The Prince, Niccolo Machiavelli describes three options for how a conquering power might best treat those it has defeated in war. The first is to ruin them; the second is to rule directly; the third is to create “therein a state of the few which might keep it friendly to you.”

The example Machiavelli gives of the last is the friendly government Sparta established in Athens upon defeating it after 27 years of war in 404 BCE. For the upper caste of an Athenian elite already contemptuous of democracy, the city’s defeat in the Peloponnesian War confirmed that Sparta’s system was preferable. It was a high-spirited military aristocracy ruling over a permanent servant class, the helots, who were periodically slaughtered to condition them to accept their subhuman status. Athenian democracy by contrast gave too much power to the low-born. The pro-Sparta oligarchy used their patrons’ victory to undo the rights of citizens, and settle scores with their domestic rivals, exiling and executing them and confiscating their wealth.

The Athenian government disloyal to Athens’ laws and contemptuous of its traditions was known as the Thirty Tyrants, and understanding its role and function helps explain what is happening in America today.

For my last column I spoke with The New York Times’ Thomas Friedman about an article he wrote more than a decade ago, during the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. His important piece documents the exact moment when the American elite decided that democracy wasn’t working for them. Blaming the Republican Party for preventing them from running roughshod over the American public, they migrated to the Democratic Party in the hopes of strengthening the relationships that were making them rich.

A trade consultant told Friedman: “The need to compete in a globalized world has forced the meritocracy, the multinational corporate manager, the Eastern financier and the technology entrepreneur to reconsider what the Republican Party has to offer. In principle, they have left the party, leaving behind not a pragmatic coalition but a group of ideological naysayers.”

In the more than 10 years since Friedman’s column was published, the disenchanted elite that the Times columnist identified has further impoverished American workers while enriching themselves. The one-word motto they came to live by was globalism—that is, the freedom to structure commercial relationships and social enterprises without reference to the well-being of the particular society in which they happened to make their livings and raise their children.

New study from CDC - breathing even less oxygen, more CO2 is good for you

Double masking can block over 92% of potentially infectious particles from escaping, CDC study says

New data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that double masking using a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask, like a disposable blue surgical mask can significantly improve protection from Covid-19.

Researchers found that the combination of the two masks can block 92.5% of potentially infectious particles from escaping by creating a tighter fit around the face.

They also found that overall performance of medical procedure masks alone can be improved by folding mask edges inward and knotting ear loop strings where they meet mask fabric to reduce gaps.

A knotted medical mask can block 63% of aerosols that may contain coronavirus, a significant improvement from blocking only 42% of particles when unknotted. The findings were published Wednesday in the CDC’S Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Beginning in January 2021, the CDC tested the double masking and knotting methods to evaluate mask performance protection. Researchers found the effectiveness of cloth and medical procedure masks can be improved by ensuring they are well fitted to the contours of the face to prevent air and particles from escaping from gaps around the mask’s edges.

The study found that when both a source of infection and uninfected source were both fitted with double masks, the uninfected person’s exposure to potentially infectious particles was reduced by 96.4%.

When both people wore knotted and tucked masks alone, the uninfected person’s cumulative exposure to potentially infectious particles was reduced by 95.9%.

Both findings highlight the importance of a good fit to maximize mask performance to reduce exposure.

“This observation suggests that amendments to improve fit might result in equivalent improvements, regardless of the masks baseline filtration efficiency,” the researchers wrote.

It is unclear how or if the CDC will incorporate these new findings into its mask recommendations.

The CDC team used a medical procedure mask, like blue surgical masks, and a three-layered cloth mask for a total of twelve different mask combinations. They performed tests using various combinations of no mask, double masks, and unknotted or knotted and tucked medical procedure masks.

When studying ‘double masking’ these experiments utilized one cloth over one medical mask. The researchers did not include any other combinations of masks, such as cloth over cloth, medical procedure mask over medical procedure mask, or medical procedure mask over cloth.

The study also did not provide any guidance on mask fitting.

“The data in this report underscore the finding that good fit can increase filtration efficiency. Multiple simple ways to achieve better fit have been demonstrated to be effective,” the analysis reads.

“Until vaccine-induced population immunity is achieved, universal masking is a highly effective means to slow the spread," it added.

In another blow against small businesses during a pandemic…

House Dems pass gradual $15 minimum wage hike in late night committee vote

The $15 minimum wage hike was part of the House Education and Labor Committee's budget reconciliation legislation for Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus plan

House Democrats later Tuesday evening passed a gradual $15 minimum wage hike in a committee vote.

The increase from $7.25 an hour was part of the House Education and Labor Committee's budget reconciliation legislation for President Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus plan. In the legislation, the minimum wage would reach $15 in 2025.

The language of the Raise the Wage Act was incorporated into the $170 billion COVID-19 stimulus funding legislation for public schools during the virtual committee markup that began late in the afternoon on Tuesday. The vote on the legislation was 27-21 along party lines.

"This legislation invests in safely reopening schools, raises wages and increases safety protections for workers, expands access to affordable care, and provides support for the surge of families facing hunger and hardship during this pandemic," House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott wrote in a statement.

Ranking member Rep. Virginia Foxx, a North Carolina Republican, criticized the majority's actions.

"Once again, Democrats are ignoring vulnerable, hardworking Americans, choosing instead to favor left wing special interests and those who support their radical agenda," she said.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office recently projected that a gradual $15 minimum wage in Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID relief package would result in 1.4 million workers losing their jobs.

Soros-Funded Group to Provide “Mandatory Implicit Bias Training” for City Workers in L.A.

Billionaire George Soros’s radical leftism is spreading through America’s most populous county. Days after a Soros-backed prosecutor who vows to lock up fewer criminals became Los Angeles District Attorney, the city’s mayor is forcing all employees to undergo “implicit bias” training to be conducted by a group that receives funding from Soros and his Open Society Foundations (OSF). That makes L.A. County and its biggest city, the nation’s second-most populous, a stronghold of the powerful Soros machine that aims to promote the left’s agenda.

It started with Soros’s financial support for a controversial Black Lives Matter-endorsed District Attorney candidate, George Gascon, who has alienated career prosecutors throughout California with his renegade criminal justice reform initiatives. A former San Francisco District Attorney, Gascon announced upon being sworn in as L.A. County’s top prosecutor that his office will no longer pursue the death penalty, try juveniles as adults, add gangs and other enhancements to criminal complaints or seek cash bail for non-violent felonies or misdemeanors. It is worth noting that the L.A. County D.A. is the largest local prosecutorial office in the United States. The District Attorney in Sacramento recently blasted Gascon in a letter published by various media outlets in the state. “Your Special Directives are not just extreme but will undoubtedly wreak havoc on crime victims and their Constitutional rights,” the letter states. “Your lack of concern for their rights and safety concerns me greatly. Additionally, because crime has no boundaries, these Special Directives will have far greater impact than on Los Angeles County alone. Rather, victims across California will be negatively impacted and the safety of all Californians will be jeopardized.”

Now all the city’s 50,000 employees must participate in racial bias training conducted by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University (OSU). Judicial Watch dug up information on the group and uncovered deep ties to Soros and other notorious leftists. The center is named after a former OSU president appointed by California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi to a prestigious Department of Education post. In addition to its “implicit bias” trainings, the institute’s research areas include racial wealth inequality, opportunity mapping, and health equity and disparities. As you would expect, its agenda is radically progressive. Policy proposals from Kirwan Institute products include, “significantly raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy,” a Congressional committee on reparations, guaranteed employment, and “Medicare for All.”

Until this month, the institute’s executive director was Darrick Hamilton, who left to head the Institute for the Study of Race, Stratification and Political Economy at the New School in New York. He is best known for being one of the developers of the “baby bonds” proposal in which the government provides a trust fund for every newborn based on parents’ wealth. Hamilton was an advisor to the Bernie Sanders campaign and a member of the Biden-Sanders Unity Task Force. OSU paid him $259,334.40 annually to run the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Other individuals associated with the institute include Kyle Strickland, who serves as senior legal analyst and Hasan Jeffries, an OSU professor who achieved notoriety for posting on social media that the Fraternal Order of Police has killed more black people than the white supremacist hate group Ku Klux Klan. Strickland is a Black Lives Matter supporter who is also deputy director of race and democracy at the Roosevelt Institute, which received more than $1 million from OSF in 2019 and lists Jonathan Soros as a senior fellow.

The Kirwan Institute has received an undisclosed amount of funding from OSF and the Soros conglomerate is listed as a financial supporter in its 2015-2016 Biennial Report. OSF is not specifically mentioned in the 2020 annual report however, it notes that the institute partners with Demos, the Roosevelt Institute, the Center for Community Change, and the Economic Security Project, all of which receive extensive funding from OSF. One of the institute’s partners, PolicyLink, is a liberal research and advocacy nonprofit in Oakland that received $500,000 from OSF in 2019.

The mayor of L.A., Eric Garcetti, claims the goal of enlisting this group is to “advance racial equity across city government.” Garcetti recently issued a directive that creates a racial equity task force and appoints racial equity officers throughout city government. “Our city is in pain, and we are hungry for change,” the mayor writes in the order “The demonstrations for racial justice in recent weeks have not exposed something new — they’ve laid bare the urgent and overdue demand to end structural racism. America’s tragic history of violent and persistent discrimination casts a long shadow over the challenges Blacks and other people of color confront today in housing, employment, and the criminal justice system.” The social, economic, and political inequities have created a “shamefully disparate and stratified society,” Garcetti asserts.

First Female Referee Throws Flag On Play But Won’t Say What’s Wrong

TAMPA, FL—Sarah Thomas, the first female referee to officiate in a Super Bowl, threw a flag on a play in the second quarter but refused to say what was wrong.

"Penalty, on the offense – you know what, never mind. It's fine," she said after throwing a flag on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Wait – what'd I do wrong?" asked Tom Brady indignantly.

"Nothing. I said it was fine," she said, folding her arms.

"It doesn't seem like it's fine. You threw a flag!" Brady responded.

She shrugged and turned away. "No, it's totally fine. Go and play football with your friends. It's fine."

Play proceeded without any consequences, though she glared bitterly at Brady throughout the next few plays.

Meanwhile, the male referees displayed their toxic masculinity by awarding extra yards for players who exhibited unnecessary roughness and also giving them a manly chest bump and a "right on, bro."
