I write to follow up my letters of April 23, 2024, and May 1, 2024, concerning the potential manipulation of the stock of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (“TMTG”), which trades on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker “DJT.”

As you know, Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) Regulation SHO (“Reg SHO”) guidance clearly states that the only way to establish “reasonable grounds” for short sales of threshold securities like DJT is if the broker-dealer pre-borrows the securities; moreover, “a broker-dealer may not re-apply a locate for intra-day buy to cover trades.”1 SEC guidance also provides that “bona-fide market-making does not include activity that is related to speculative selling strategies for investment purposes of the broker-dealer and is disproportionate to the usual market making patterns or practices of the broker-dealer in that security.”2 Despite this clear guidance, TMTG’s stock has appeared continuously since April 2, 2024, on the Nasdaq Reg SHO Threshold List, which results from persistent failures to deliver (“FTDs”) and can indicate the illegal “naked” short selling of a security.

The apparent anomalies surrounding the trading of DJT have become chronic and alarming to TMTG. In the last 30 trading days, an extraordinary volume of DJT shares traded have been shorts, leading to an astonishing quantity of FTDs. In fact, recently published SEC data indicate that FTDs exceeded 1 million DJT shares on eleven separate trading days between April 9, 2024, and April 30, 2024, with a peak of over 2.3 million FTDs on April 29, 2024, alone.3 Data made available to us suggest that serious anomalies may have occurred on that date, as well as on April 30 and May 1.

In addition to obtaining relevant information from FINRA regarding these EBS requests, which could shed light on potential violations of Reg SHO, I again advise you to include in your investigation into this matter requests for the following records:

• Consolidated Audit Trail (“CAT”) trading data including trading records, quotes, market maker records, and add/drop records, and CAT tables revealing masked fields such as broker aliases;

• FINRA data including brokers’ short interest data and Trade Reporting Facility (“TRF”) data with brokers’ market participant identifiers (“MPIDs”);

• Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (“DTCC”) information including daily position reports, CNS accounting summaries, participant daily activity statements, universal trade capture data, consolidated trade summaries (M209 records), and correspondent clearing records;

• Reports from DTCC member firms reflecting total shares short since February 14, 2024 (including trading under the ticker ‘DWAC’ prior to March 26, 2024), CAT data for loan/borrow reports, and daily locate and pre-borrow logs.

I remain convinced that a robust inquiry is needed to protect shareholders, including TMTG’s retail shareholders, and to ensure that Main Street investors retain their faith in the fairness of U.S. markets. To that end, I am ready and willing to assist your efforts in any way possible.

Non-citizens are the focus of Ohio's Secretary of State Frank LaRose's latest initiative to clean up the state's voter rolls. A recent review of the rolls by the Secretary of State's Public Integrity Division and Office of Data Analytics and Archives found, according to a May 14 press release, "137 voter registrations assigned to Ohio residents who have twice confirmed their non-citizenship status to the BMV. Ohio law requires two instances of individuals submitting documentation to the BMV indicating that they are not United States citizens. The individual must also have either registered to vote, updated a registration, or voted in Ohio between the two instances of submitting the required documentation to the BMV."

LaRose stated, "Ohioans overwhelmingly passed an amendment to our state constitution which makes it clear that only U.S. citizens can vote in our elections," said Secretary LaRose. "It is my duty under the law to uphold the constitution, and the legislature has explicitly tasked me with ensuring that only eligible citizens can register and vote. It's important to recognize that some of these registrations may be the result of an honest mistake," LaRose continued.

"These may be well-meaning people trying to pursue the American dream, and communication barriers sometimes result in a registration form being submitted in error. We need to help them get that cleared up before an accidental registration becomes an illegal vote that could result in a felony conviction or even deportation."

To cross-check citizenship data, the Secretary also requested additional access to records held by the Biden administration. The requests include:

• Access to the SAVE database, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration resource that helps verify citizenship status.

• Access to citizenship-identifying records from the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration databases.

• Federal district court records that disclose individuals disqualified from jury service due to a lack of U.S. citizenship.

Non-citizen voting has become a significant issue ahead of the 2024 election because the U.S. election system makes it challenging to accurately track non-citizen registrations and non-citizen voters. Due to Biden's open borders policies, the nation's borders have been flooded with illegal aliens, with over 10 million people entering the country since Biden took office in 2021—not including the "gotaways," according to True the Vote's published 611 Project.

Ohio Withdrew from ERIC in Spring 2023, Prompting a New System of Maintaining Voter Rolls

The new data analytics team was hired following Ohio's exit from ERIC in the Spring of 2023. LaRose wrote a letter to ERIC on Mar. 6, 2023, proposing reforms in the ERIC system, but his requests were met with resistance. Ohio was the sixth state to withdraw from the ERIC voter registration maintenance system. Since then, LaRose has taken steps to enhance the process of purging illegal registrations from the state's voter rolls. County boards will identify voters whose registrations have been inactive for four years.

Aside from removing non-citizens, a May 2 directive asked counties to engage in a more comprehensive effort to ensure the accuracy of the state's rolls.

Counties are directed to identify alleged illegal registrations by May 21 and must mail notices by May 31. The state's searchable database of inactive voter registrations will also be updated after May 21.

The ongoing review of possible gaps in Ohio's voter roll maintenance program requires counties to cross-reference voter registrations for the following issues:

• Voters who moved but failed to update their addresses in the system. Registrations flagged for cancelation in 2024 were first identified by the U.S. Postal Service's National Change of Address (NCOA) registry in 2020 and have been confirmed inactive for four years.

• Past due removals: The Secretary directed county boards to review registration data for records that may have been previously flagged for removal after the required four-year waiting period. "If the registrations are confirmed again to be inactive and eligible for removal, the boards have been directed to initiate that process. The Secretary of State's Office of Data Analytics and Archive, the first of its kind in the nation, identified this issue as part of an ongoing data integrity investigation."

• Returned acknowledgments: "These new registrations received an acknowledgment notice from a county board of elections that was returned as undeliverable by the Postal Service. By law, the registration must be placed in confirmation status, meaning the voter is notified by forwardable mail that they either need to update the registration or engage in "voter-initiated activity" to avoid cancelation."

• BMV Mismatches: "By law, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles provides identification records to boards of elections used to verify voter registrations, such as a registrant's name, date of birth, last four digits of a Social Security number, driver's license number and whether the person has been identified as deceased. If any of this information mismatches with a voter's registration, the registration must be put into confirmation status, meaning the voter is notified by forwardable mail that they either need to update the registration or engage in "voter-initiated activity" to avoid cancelation."

LaRose is the first Secretary of State in the country to publish a "Registration Readiness roster." The Ohio Secretary of State's website will list the roster for public review. The website allows Ohioans to check inactive registrations before the removal is initiated. LaRose reassured Ohioans that he is committed to election integrity as a top priority, "These steps should give Ohioans confidence that election integrity is our top priority. The process we're initiating this week is just part of a larger, aggressive effort to ensure Ohio is ready for another high-profile presidential election this fall. We'll have more to announce soon."

In Ohio, a voter's registration status must meet the following conditions:

• The voter was notified no later than Jun. 30, 2020, that they appeared in the NCOA out-of-county database; OR whose notice was returned undeliverable; OR whose BMV records do not reflect voter registration.

• Registered to vote before Feb. 18, 2020

• No voting history since Apr. 28, 2020

• Has not engaged in any "voter-initiated activity" since they received a 2020 notice.

Voter-initiated activity includes voting, updating voter registration, submitting an absentee ballot request form, and signing a candidate or issuing a petition verified by a board of elections. Voters in Ohio should use the following form to update their registrations. Once notified, voters will have until Jul. 15 to update registration or engage in voter-initiated activity. Voters who fail to update their registration will be purged from the rolls on Jul. 22. New voter registration applications must be postmarked 30 days before the election to be eligible to vote in that election.

In another directive from LaRose, counties purged 26,666 registrations from the rolls in 85 counties in September 2023 before the November election, a decision that was criticized as "reckless" in a letter sent by State Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney (D-Westlake). Another 6,524 abandoned registrations were removed in Cuyahoga, Lucas, and Summit counties following the Nov. 7, 2023 General Election. Over 124,000 voters were also removed from the rolls after the 2022 election.

Innovations Ohio also criticized the Secretary of State in an "Ohio's Missing Voters" report published in October 2023. The group attributed the alleged decline (over 3% overall) in voter turnout between 2018 and 2022 to the Secretary's failure to register disadvantaged populations in the state. LaRose took office in 2018.

US president Joe Biden has revealed a new set of major tariff increases which will hit many different Chinese imports as well as impact the shipping of those products.

The largest tariffs will be imposed on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminium, and medical equipment. Biden opted to keep in place tariffs imposed during the Trump presidency while others were raised several fold. The first that pops out is the increase of duties on Chinese EV cars from 25% to 100% while semiconductor tariffs doubled from 25% to 50%, and lithium-ion EV battery duties jumped from 7.5% to 25%.

“American workers can out-work and out-compete anyone as long as the competition is fair, but for too long it hasn’t been fair. We’re not going to let China flood our market,” Biden said during a speech in front of the White House.

However, the tariffs will not hit hard in the short term because some will not take effect until 2026, but for EV batteries, solar, and other specific items, the impact will be immediate.

This, however, can hamper Biden’s climate goals and his job creation promises due to it raising the costs of EV production via tariffs on batteries.

The White House claimed that these measures will affect around $18bn in imported Chinese goods. But some are nothing more than a headline grab since the tariffs on EVs will not have an important impact since a very small number of those vehicles are imported from China.

Data from the US Census Bureau states that the US imported $427bn in goods from China in 2023 and exported just $148bn. This gap has existed for a long time and has become a thorn in Washington’s eye.

China, as expected, pushed back against the tariffs, and stated that this move would seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation. The Biden administration believes that the tariffs won’t escalate tensions with China but it will certainly explore ways to respond to the new taxes on its products.

These measures are part of the presidential election tussle between Donald Trump and Biden who both, in their own way, support tariffs on Chinese products. Trump’s idea is to have 10% tariffs on all imported products regardless of where they come from and 60% tariffs on all Chinese goods.

Lars Jensen, CEO of Vespucci Maritime and an expert in the container shipping industry, said via social media that, purely from a container shipping perspective, the goods to note with increased tariffs are solar panels from China.

“More than 50,000 teu is imported into the US each quarter. However, it should here be noted that in 2023 a full 84% of these were imported from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. But in this context, it should be noted that these are Chinese companies who set up operations in Southeast Asia in an attempt to not be subjected to the US/China trade war,” he noted.

“Another element to notice from a container shipping perspective is the introduction of a 25% tariff on ship-to-shore cranes from China,” Jensen added.

Tariffs on photovoltaic cells used to make solar panels were bumped from 25% to 50% while some critical minerals will have their tariffs raised from nothing to 25%. The tariffs on ship-to-shore cranes will rise to 25% from zero. In 2025 and 2026 tariffs will also be raised on lithium-ion batteries that are not used in electric vehicles, graphite, and permanent magnets.

BREAKING: The judge overseeing multiple 2022 midterm election challenges in Harris County, Texas has ordered a REDO for the 180th District Court judicial race after finding that there were many mistakes and violations of election law

"The court has found that 1,430 illegal votes were cast in the race for the 180th District Court and that it is not realistic or feasible to determine which candidate received those votes." - Judge David Peeples

The court also found that a “net margin of 321 votes (1146 to 825) were cast for Jones over Pierce in the extended one hour of voting on Election Day, which the court has found resulted from an official mistake by the Harris County Elections Administration Office.”

The 2022 election in Harris County was one of the most disastrous elections in the country, probably only bested by the rigged election in Maricopa County, Arizona. Voters were disenfranchised on election day and many illegal democrat votes were counted. All Republican candidates should immediately request a redo of the entire election, one rigged race should mean all the other races were rigged

Robert Fico, the populist Prime Minister of Slovakia, is still fighting for his life after he was rushed to hospital following a horror shooting.

The terrifying "assassination attempt" took place in Handlova, a town located 93 miles northeast of the country's capital Bratislava. The Slovakian Government confirmed that he is in "life-threatening condition" after being transported by helicopter, from a local hospital to one in the capital.

In a public update, the Slovakian Minister of Interior Robert Kalinak said: "Slovakia has never been confronted with a situation like this".

He thanked emergency services, nurses and specialists at the hospital, "still fighting" for the PM's life.

"He's still in surgery, he suffered serious trauma after several shots. His health is pretty serious, the situation is bad," he added.

He added: "We hope he is strong enough to deal with this trauma."

Fico, a staunch ally of Russia's President Vladimir Putin, is still under surgery after sustaining injuries to his head and chest, according to an eyewitness at the scene, who told MNT.SK that she heard "three of four shots".

Reports confirmed the surgeons had to remove four bullets from his body.

He fell to the ground as emergency services swarmed the scene.

A suspect has been detained, according to local news station TA3, with a dramatic video showing the moment they were arrested.

A loud commotion can be heard, as police officers can be seen swarming the alleged attacker while sirens can be heard blaring in the distance.

The country’s president later confirmed a suspect is in custody in a televised statement. Fico was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

The motive for the shooting was unclear. Express.co.uk has contacted the Slovakian Police for comment.

USCP Drug Investigation

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) is investigating a roughly one-inch by one-inch zip lock bag with a small amount of a white powdery substance, which field tested positive for cocaine.

The small bag was found on the floor of a hallway inside USCP headquarters. The hallway is on the second floor in an area that has been a staging spot for furniture and supplies. The area is heavily trafficked by various contractors and employees. It is also near offices such as Prisoner Processing, Crime Scene, Intel and Reports Processing.

The baggie was found in the middle of the floor just before 1:00 p.m. by an officer, who immediately reported it to a supervisor. The residue was field tested and came back positive for cocaine. The USCP Investigations Division has opened an investigation, which will include further testing, including DNA testing of the baggie. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Taiwanese drag queen Nymphia Wind and winner of hit TV series "RuPaul's Drag Race" performed a rousing medley of songs for outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen, thanking her for being the island's "mother".

During Tsai's two terms in power, her Democratic Progressive Party had been a strong proponent of social issues particularly on LGBTQ rights, making the island the first place in Asia to legalise gay marriage in 2019.

She will step down as president on Monday with that under her belt, as well as having been Taiwan's first woman president - two milestones that Nymphia Wind tearfully highlighted in a speech Wednesday at the presidential office.

"Thank you so much for your eight years of dedication, for becoming Taiwan's mother," the Taiwanese-American drag queen said.

The first East Asian winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" performed three songs in the main entrance of the presidential office - the first by Taiwanese songstress Huang Fei, and then "Marry the Night" by Lady Gaga.

For the final song, Nymphia Wind was joined by five other Taiwanese drag queens as they danced and lipsynced to pop star Jolin Tsai's LGBTQ-centred song "Womxnly", which includes the lyrics "Never let anyone change who you are".

Taraba told the BBC Fico was no longer in a life-threatening situation.

China’s junk dollar bonds are rallying to their highest level in three years amid government efforts to shore up the bruised property sector. The average price of Chinese high-yield dollar bonds has jumped 2.1 cents so far this week and is set for the biggest weekly advance in seven months. Prices have risen to 85.5 cents, according to a Bloomberg index, the highest since September 2021, just before Fantasia Holdings Group Co.’s surprise default cast a spotlight on the extent of China’s property-debt problems. Top gainers this month included some of the survivors of the crisis, including China Vanke Co., Longfor Group Holdings and Seazen Group Ltd. Some of Vanke’s dollar bonds are poised for their largest daily gain Thursday since November last year. Its note due in 2027 jumped 6.3 cents on the dollar Thursday morning, while another one maturing in 2029 is up 6.7 cents.

Despite the rise in junk-bond prices among some property developers, a large portion of the market remains deeply distressed. Dollar notes of defaulted builders such as Country Garden Holdings and China Evergrande Group, which have been removed from the Bloomberg index, are still trading below 10 cents on the dollar. An Australian private health organisation has been targeted by a large-scale ransomware attack.

National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinnes said in a statement she had been advised of a large-scale ransomware breach incident against a private health information provider on Wednesday afternoon.

The tank forces had arrived at the area in the morning hours, and several hours later, the paratroopers reached the area and established a post in the building. Later in the evening, another group of paratroopers reached the area and notified two of the tanks there that they were entering the building.

The tank forces had later identified a gun barrel from one of the windows of the building and believed it was enemy forces, leading them to fire two shells.

The incident is being further probed.

Australian government investigating 'large-scale ransomware' data breach of script provider MediSecure

e-script provider MediSecure is the health organisation at the centre of the large-scale ransomware data breach announced by the national cyber security coordinator.

The company facilitates electronic prescribing and dispensing of prescriptions.

It says it has "taken immediate steps to mitigate any potential impact on our systems", and believes the incident originated from a third-party vendor.

MediSecure's website has been pulled, and the company has posted a statement saying it has identified a cyber security incident impacting "the personal and health information of individuals".

The company is a prescription exchange service, which facilitates electronic prescribing and dispensing of prescriptions.

It says it has "taken immediate steps to mitigate any potential impact on our systems", and believes the incident originated from a third-party vendor.

"MediSecure takes its legal and ethical obligations seriously and appreciates this information will be of concern.

"MediSecure is actively assisting the Australian Digital Health Agency and the national cyber security coordinator to manage the impacts of the incident."

MediSecure was one of two companies awarded contracts by the federal government to provide PBS e-script services until late last year, when the tender was granted exclusively to another company, eRx.

In October last year, the ACCC granted authorisation for MediSecure to transfer all publicly- funded electronic prescriptions and data to eRx.

MediSecure said at the time it would remain in the market providing private prescriptions. It's unclear what data has been compromised and over what time period.

The company could not be contacted today.

Earlier, national cyber security coordinator Michelle McGuinness was unable to share what company had been affected.

"I am working with agencies across the Australian government, states and territories to coordinate a whole-of-government response to this incident," Lieutenant-General McGuinness said in a statement on social media platform X.

"We are in the very preliminary stages of our response and there is limited detail to share at this stage, but I will continue to provide updates as we progress while working closely with the affected commercial organisation to address the impacts caused by the incident."

The organisation is also working with the Australian Federal Police.

Cyber Security Minister Care O'Neil says she was briefed on the breach, and the government had convened a national coordination mechanism.

"Updates will be provided in due course," she said on social media platform X.

"Speculation at this stage risks undermining significant work underway to support the company's response."

Australian Medical Association president Steve Robson said the organisation is seeking urgent briefings on the incident.

"There needs to be a thorough and transparent investigation, backed by clear and consistent communication to the public and profession," Professor Robson said.

"These are critical to maintaining community trust in the electronic systems that are now integral to the functioning of our health system."

In October 2022, Medibank revealed hackers accessed the personal data of all customers across its Medibank, ahm and OSHC brands, affecting millions of Australians.

Kevin Morris, a Hollywood entertainment lawyer who has loaned millions to the president’s son, has told associates he is tapped out.

Less than a month before the start of his first trial, Hunter Biden may be losing a key financial lifeline.

Kevin Morris, a Hollywood entertainment lawyer who has long supported the president’s son, has told associates that he has run out of resources to help fund Biden’s legal defense, according to a person close to Morris who was granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.

“The reason Kevin got involved financially in the first place was that he could see that no one was going to help Hunter,” said the person. “Now, four and a half years later, there’s still no help — and now Kevin is completely tapped out. So just when Hunter is facing two criminal trials starting in a few weeks, he has no resources. It’s pretty dire.”

Reached for comment about this reporting, Morris confirmed the person’s account but declined to elaborate further. A spokesperson for Biden’s legal team also declined to comment.

Biden is scheduled to begin trial on June 3 on federal gun charges in Delaware. A separate case, in which Biden is charged with federal tax crimes, is scheduled to go to trial June 20 in California.

Morris has played a key role in handling Biden’s legal bills, as he detailed in an interview with lawmakers in January. The possibility that Morris can no longer serve as a benefactor is the latest sign of the tumult surrounding the president’s son in the final weeks of preparation for two trials that he — and his father — had hoped would never happen.

The person close to Morris said that the Hollywood lawyer faces financial constraints that present “a huge problem” and that there are concerns about how Biden will pay for expert witnesses to testify for him at his Delaware trial. It is unclear precisely how much Morris has spent thus far to support Biden, but in aJanuary letter to the House oversight committee, Morris’ lawyer said Morris had loaned Biden more than $6.5 million.

At a pretrial hearing on Tuesday in Wilmington, Biden’s lead defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, signaled that the preparation for the first trial — on charges that Biden illegally bought a gun as a drug user and lied about it on a government form — is facing headwinds. As the hearing opened, Lowell told Judge Maryellen Noreika that for the first time in his long career, he wasn’t ready for a trial to start. He noted the complexity of Biden’s legal situation: two trials looming within weeks of each other, and appeals proceedings already underway in both jurisdictions.

Lowell told Noreika that he and his team have been preparing for the trial, but that one hurdle was finding expert witnesses to testify on a variety of evidentiary issues, including drug addiction and forensics. He said he found three experts who had “tentatively agreed” to get involved but that he was still working to finalize retention agreements for these people.

Experts who testify for defendants at trials can bill $500 per hour or more for their work. They can rebut the analysis that government experts provide about evidence presented at trial.

Lowell described having strained “resources” to handle preparation for two trials — currently scheduled to start in the same month — on two different coasts.

But the judge was unmoved, and declined his requests for the trial to be postponed.

It’s not clear how much Lowell, or the other lawyers working on Biden’s cases, are charging for their services. In other recent cases, Lowell has sought fees of $855 per hour and over $1,500 per hour.

Morris and Biden met in 2019 during now-President Biden’s campaign. They both were raised in the mid-Atlantic in Roman Catholic families, and immediately developed a close bond. At the time, Biden was trying to get his life on track and stay sober. Morris helped him get safe housing and pay his overdue tax bill. In his January interview with congressional investigators, Morris said he and Biden spoke every day and were like family.

CNN reported in October that Biden has racked up more than $10 million in legal bills over the years. Since becoming sober several years ago, the president’s son has focused on painting as his occupation. He signed with a New York gallerist, Georges Berges, to sell his work. But that gallerist told congressional investigators that the relationship was not as lucrative as he had hoped, and that Biden’s art would have sold for more if not for the baggage associated with his name.

“Had his name been somebody else, he would have been doing a lot better,” Berges said in his testimony. “I have artists that I don’t think are as good that are selling for higher than he is. And so it’s actually — I feel bad for him in so many ways because I think he’s a great artist, and he just can’t get a break.”

Of about 20 pieces of art Biden sold with Berges’ gallery, 11 works were sold to Morris, he said. Morris purchased the art by paying the gallery’s commission for the sale, and Biden’s share was handled without the gallery.

Berges also told lawmakers he stopped representing Biden last year.

“From a business perspective, it hasn’t been the best decision for me,” he said.

Michael Cohen's Former Lawyer Shatters His Testimony

While testifying before a House committee on Wednesday, Robert Costello, a lawyer who previously represented Michael Cohen, spilled the beans on a number of things that seriously damaged the unprecedented “hush money” case against Donald Trump.

Among the things he revealed included the allegation that Cohen told him “I swear to God, I don’t have anything on Donald Trump."

Costello criticized Cohen’s testimony on the stand as “full of lies,” stating “I read Michael Cohen’s testimony from yesterday’s trial in New York on the way down on the train and virtually every statement he made about me was another lie."

Costello also revealed that Cohen reportedly told him he didn’t believe Stormy Daniels’ claim about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, and said that Cohen worried about the story being embarrassing to Melania Trump if Daniels went public with it. Costello said Cohen told him the money for Daniels was obtained through a Home Equity Line of Credit to conceal the source of the money. By contrast, Cohen claimed in court that Trump signed the check given to Daniels.

Costello blamed Cohen turning against Trump on him feeling “betrayed” for not being offered a White House job.

North Carolina could ban face masks for medical reasons in public

The North Carolina state Senate voted along party lines Wednesday to ban anyone from wearing masks in public, even for health reasons.

Republican supporters of the ban said it would help law enforcement crack down on protesters who wear masks. They say demonstrators are abusing COVID-19 pandemic-era practices to hide their identities following a wave of pro-Palestine protests nationwide and at North Carolina universities.

The bill goes even further and repeals an exception that’s been state law since the early stages of the pandemic that allows people to wear masks in public for health and safety reasons.

Thirty senators voted in favor of House Bill 237, while 15 opposed it and five were absent.

Democrats raised concerns about the bill, particularly for those who are immunocompromised or those who may want to continue to wear masks during cancer treatments, WRAL News reported.

State Sen. Sydney Batch (D) is a cancer survivor and shared with her fellow senators how her family wore masks to protect her and her weakened immune system during treatment.

She and other Democrats proposed ways to amend the bill so police could still crack down on protesters but continue to have legal protections for health concerns, but they were shot down, the outlet reported.

GOP Sen. Buck Newton brushed off the concerns, saying no one saw “Granny getting arrested in the Walmart pre-COVID” and thinks law enforcement will use “good common sense” when applying the law, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

The AP noted that the state’s general statutes on masking date back to the 1950s in an attempt to curb Ku Klux Klan membership, when the state passed a public masking ban.

Under the bill, if a person is arrested for protesting while masked, it would elevate the classification of a person’s crime, either a misdemeanor or felony, to one class higher.

>It now heads to Gov. Roy Cooper’s desk. Cooper, a Democrat, could veto the bill, but the North Carolina Republican Party has a supermajority and can override the expected veto.

Images from the JunoCam visible-light camera aboard NASA’s Juno spacecraft supports the theory that the icy crust at the north and south poles of Jupiter’s moon Europa is not where it used to be. Another high-resolution picture of the icy moon, by the spacecraft’s Stellar Reference Unit (SRU), reveals signs of possible plume activity and an area of ice shell disruption where brine may have recently bubbled to the surface.

The JunoCam results recently appeared in the Planetary Science Journal and the SRU results in the journal JGR Planets.

On Sept. 29, 2022, Juno made its closest flyby of Europa, coming within 220 miles (355 kilometers) of the moon’s frozen surface. The four pictures taken by JunoCam and one by the SRU are the first high-resolution images of Europa since Galileo’s last flyby in 2000.

Juno’s ground track over Europa allowed imaging near the moon’s equator. When analyzing the data, the JunoCam team found that along with the expected ice blocks, walls, scarps, ridges, and troughs, the camera also captured irregularly distributed steep-walled depressions 12 to 31 miles (20 to 50 kilometers) wide. They resemble large ovoid pits previously found in imagery from other locations of Europa.

A giant ocean is thought to reside below Europa’s icy exterior, and these surface features have been associated with “true polar wander,” a theory that Europa’s outer ice shell is essentially free-floating and moves.

“True polar wander occurs if Europa’s icy shell is decoupled from its rocky interior, resulting in high stress levels on the shell, which lead to predictable fracture patterns,” said Candy Hansen, a Juno co-investigator who leads planning for JunoCam at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona. “This is the first time that these fracture patterns have been mapped in the southern hemisphere, suggesting that true polar wander’s effect on Europa’s surface geology is more extensive than previously identified.”

The high-resolution JunoCam imagery has also been used to reclassify a formerly prominent surface feature from the Europa map.

“Crater Gwern is no more,” said Hansen. “What was once thought to be a 13-mile-wide impact crater — one of Europa’s few documented impact craters — Gwern was revealed in JunoCam data to be a set of intersecting ridges that created an oval shadow.”

Although all five Europa images from Juno are high-resolution, the image from the spacecraft’s black-and-white SRU offers the most detail. Designed to detect dim stars for navigation purposes, the SRU is sensitive to low light. To avoid over-illumination in the image, the team used the camera to snap the nightside of Europa while it was lit only by sunlight scattered off Jupiter (a phenomenon called “Jupiter-shine”).

This innovative approach to imaging allowed complex surface features to stand out, revealing intricate networks of cross-cutting ridges and dark stains from potential plumes of water vapor. One intriguing feature, which covers an area 23 miles by 42 miles (37 kilometers by 67 kilometers), was nicknamed by the team “the Platypus” because of its shape.

The man who critically injured Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday was afierce critic of the latter’s decision to stop arms shipments to Ukraine, Interior Minister Matuss Sutaj Estok has said.

Fico was shot at point-blank range several times on Wednesday as he greeted supporters in the small town of Handlova. The assailant was immediately arrested and the prime minister was rushed to a hospital in serious condition. Local authorities said earlier that there was a “clear political motivation” behind the attack.

Media reports identified the attacker as Juraj Cintula, 71, said to be thefounder of the Slovak Association of Writersand a supporter of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party.

On Tuesday, Sutaj Estok confirmed earlier media reports that “the perpetrator is charged with the premeditated crime of attempted murder” and stressed that this was “a politically motivated act.”

According to the minister, the suspect closely followed domestic and international events, and protested against several government policies, including the closure of the Special Prosecutor’s Office, and the suspension of military aid to Ukraine. Fico, a critic of the Western stance on the Ukraine conflict, campaigned on a promise to cut arms deliveries to Kiev, which he proceeded to do after taking over as prime minister after the election last autumn’

“He stated these reasons why he disagrees with the government policy and why he decided to assassinate the Prime Minister,”Sutaj Estok said, describing the attacker as “the so-called lonely wolf” not linked to any groups.

He noted that the suspect’s actions were in part accelerated by the recent victory of Peter Pellegrini, an ally of Fico, in the presidential election. The term of the current president, Zuzana Caputova, described as having pro-Western leanings, expires next month. Both Pellegrini and Caputova have denounced the attack, describing it as a threat to democracy.

Stocks ticked higher Thursday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average above 40,000 for the first time, as a banner year on Wall Street continued.

The Dow hit an intraday high of 40,000.54 and was last up 84 points, or 0.2%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also hit record highs, gaining 0.2% each. The Dow’s march toward 40,000 comes as expectations of interest rate cuts and enthusiasm around artificial intelligence boost investor sentiment.

On Wednesday, the April reading of the consumer price index, a broad measure of how much goods and services cost at the cash register, increased 0.3% from the prior month. That was slightly below the Dow Jones estimate of 0.4%. The data sent stocks ripping higher, with the S&P 500 closing above 5,300 for the first time. The 30-stock Dow reached a fresh milestone Thursday morning, surpassing the 40,000 threshold.

At its high of the session, the average touched 40,002.75, climbing about 0.2%. Walmart shares helped lift the price-weighted index to its fresh high, as the big-box retailer jumped more than 6% following a fiscal first-quarter beat on top and bottom lines. The attempt to kill Prime Minister Robert Fico stems from a combustible political environment in the country, a top official has said

Slovakia appears to be on the brink of a civil war, its interior minister has warned, following the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday.

The head of the Slovak government was shot in the eastern town of Handlova, where he had chaired a working meeting. The gunman, identified by the media as an opposition party supporter in his early 70s, acted on political motives, according to Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok warned that the country was “on the edge of a civil war”over political tensions. Social media is full of “hateful comments” in the wake of the attack, he added.

Fico has lashed out at comments coming from supporters of the opposition, particularly those upset by the waning power of the Progressives.He has also accused some media outlets of fanning the flames.

Some Slovaks are denouncing supporters of political forces they do not like as “misguided blind folk” that they are ashamed to have as their neighbors, he lamented in a video statement last month. Politicians face obscenities in the streets, he added.

”I expect this frustration to turn so intense that it could lead to the murder of one of the leading government officials,”Fico warned.

Many Slovak politicians and foreign leaders have condemned the attempt on Fico’s life. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Slovak leader was a “courageous and strong-spirited man,” and that those qualities would hopefully help him overcome the crisis. Fico’s deputy, Tomas Taraba, said his surgery was a success and that the prime minister is expected to recover.
