White House 'Deeply Troubled' As Georgia Enacts Law To Thwart NGO 'Interference'

 

Defying large domestic protests and condemnation from the United States and other Western governments, the Republic of Georgia's parliament on Tuesday adopted a "foreign agents" law that would impede foreign nongovernmental organizations' (NGOs') ability to operate in the country – and put Georgia's European Union and NATO ambitions in jeopardy.

 

Georgia's president, Salome Zourabichvili, has vowed to veto the measure, but the parliament approved the law by a 84-30 margin, only needs 76 to override a veto.After the law's passage, Biden Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters:

 

"We’re deeply troubled by Georgia’s Kremlin-style 'foreign agents' legislation…we have been outspoken about our concerns with the legislation, which runs counter to democratic values and would move Georgia further away from the values of the European Union and, let’s not forget, also NATO."

Agent Provocateurs Exposed: Zionists That Sparked UCLA Violence Still Haven't Been Arrested

 

The Grayzone has obtained a dossier detailing the identities of the Zionist hooligans who assaulted UCLA anti-genocide student protesters. It was sent to LA police, but no arrests have been made. And the cops still can’t explain why they disappeared for hours during the mob attack.

 

On April 30, thirty people were injured when a mob of Zionist hooligans savagely assaulted the pro-Palestine UCLA encampment shortly before midnight. For over three hours, local and campus police stood down as the masked thugs assaulted students, journalists, and even officers of the law with fireworks volleys, pepper spray, and metal pipes. Though multiple attackers have been identified by community members on social media, to date there have been no arrests of pro-Israel goons.

 

The Grayzone has obtained a dossier composed by anonymous sleuths claiming involvement with the UCLA student protests which apparently identifies some of the attack’s perpetrators. The students emailed the document to the UCLA administration and police (UCPD), as well as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. It contains detailed information about the identities of those who were filmed carrying out wanton violence.

 

Los Angeles-area police have arrested droves of students protesting Israel’s US-backed genocide in Gaza, accusing over 40 students and journalists of “conspiracy to commit burglary” for attempting a sit-in on school grounds. Yet local authorities have made a grand total of zero arrests in the coordinated Zionist mob assault against UCLA anti-genocide protesters on April 30.

Israeli Ministers Join March Calling for Settlements in Gaza, Expulsion of Palestinians

Members of the Israeli government joined thousands of Israelis in a march in southern Israel on Tuesday led by far-right activists calling for the re-establishment of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and the expulsion of Palestinians.

 

The march commemorated the 76th anniversary of the day Israel celebrates its Independence Day, known as the Nakba, or catastrophe, to the Palestinians as more than 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes to create the modern state of Israel in 1948.

 

Joining the march in the Israeli city of Sderot were two ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, leader of the Jewish Power party.

 

“In order to preserve the security achievements that our soldiers lost their lives for, we must resettle Gaza with security forces and settlers that will embrace the land with love,” Karhi said in a speech at the march, according to Haaretz. “This is the only real way to make the Hamas Nazis pay a price and to defend our nation and country.”

 

Ben Gvir also spoke and said settlements and the expulsion of Palestinians are the “true solution” to the situation in Gaza. “We must return to Gaza now! We are coming home to the Holy Land!” he said. “And second, we must encourage emigration. Encourage the voluntary emigration of the residents of Gaza. It is moral!”

 

Ben Gvir and other Israeli officials have framed their desire for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza as “voluntary migration,” but the Israeli onslaught is making the Strip uninhabitable and could give the Palestinians no choice but to leave if they have the option.

 

In October 2023, a document prepared by Israel’s Intelligence Ministry that was leaked to the media said the best post-war scenario for Israel would be the expulsion of all 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza. Since then, Israel has killed about 1.5% of the population of Gaza and has destroyed most of the Strip’s infrastructure.

 

Limor Son Har-Melech, a member of the Israeli Knesset and Ben Gvir’s Jewish Power party, said last month that there are secret plans in the works to build Jewish settlements in Gaza. “You will see practical steps, including plans and work in government offices and security services. The secretary of state made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday

 

Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday and delivered a speech where he justified President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to postpone elections.

 

Presidential elections were due to be held in March, but they weren’t, and Zelensky will remain in office after his term ends on May 20. Ukrainian parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held last year in October, but they were also canceled.

 

Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have justified the decision by pointing to Ukraine’s constitution, which prohibits elections during martial law. Martial law was first declared when Russia invaded and has been extended since. However, at one point, Zelensky made it clear that he could hold a vote if he wanted to.

 

Last year, Zelensky said that he could hold elections if the US and other Western countries paid for them and if Ukrainian legislators agreed to amend the constitution. He later ruled out the idea and there’s been no pressure from Ukraine’s Western backers to hold a vote despite the claims that the proxy war is a fight for democracy.

 

In a speech at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Blinken said the US and Europe had been helping Ukraine build “democratic pillars,” including “free and fair elections,” but said a vote can only happen when the “conditions” are right.

 

“That’s why we’re working with the government and civil society groups to shore up Ukraine’s election infrastructure. That way, as soon as Ukrainians agree that conditions allow, all Ukrainians – all Ukrainians, including those displaced by Russia’s aggression – can exercise their right to vote. People in Ukraine and around the world can have confidence that the voting process is free, fair, secure,” Blinken said.

 

Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s former commander-in-chief who was recently appointed ambassador to the UK, has long been rumored to be a potential presidential candidate in a future election, although he hasn’t announced his intention to run.

 

Earlier this year, a poll in Ukraine found Zelensky would lose to Zaluzhny in a presidential election. The poll found that 41% favored Zaluzhny in a first-round election, while only 23.7% would vote for Zelensky.

Judge Nichols gives Steve Bannon until Monday to respond to DOJ demand for immediate prison sentence.

A federal jury last year convicted Manny Recio of bribery and honest-services wire fraud amid a flurry of misconduct cases involving DEA agents accused of corruption and other federal crimes. Recio's former colleague, John Costanzo Jr., was sentenced last month to four years behind bars for orchestrating the $100,000 bribery scheme.

 

“He decided to cash in on his connections," U.S. District Court Judge Paul Oetken said of Recio during a hearing in Manhattan, adding the bribery conspiracy compromised DEA investigations. “He knew better.”

 

A decorated investigator who worked more than two decades in the DEA, Recio made an emotional apology in front of several family members and said he accepted his conviction. He told the judge he had “lost everything” through this prosecution, including his life savings.

 

“I don't even have a credit card, your honor," he said. “I stand before you without any excuses.”

 

The DEA did not respond to a request for comment.

 

Recio, 55, retired from the DEA in 2018 but remained close to Costanzo as he began recruiting clients as a private investigator for several Miami defense lawyers.

 

Prosecutors said Recio had been motivated by greed, writing in court filings that his “spending habits, including his purchase of a 2021 Porsche Macan, demonstrate the motive that led him to seek unlawful profits through bribery.”

 

“The ink was hardly dry on his retirement papers before he launched into this scheme,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheb Swett told the judge. “What they did was engage in law enforcement by secret, by inside information.”

 

Following the conviction of the two former DEA supervisors last year, federal prosecutors shifted their focus to the defense lawyers they said bankrolled the $100,000 bribery scheme, David Macey and Luis Guerra, recently getting clearance to review hundreds of normally privileged communications with Recio. Macey and Guerra have not been charged and have not responded to repeated requests for comment.

 

Much of the prosecution turned on text messages and wiretapped phone calls between the lawmen after a longtime DEA snitch turned on the same agency that launched his lucrative career as the go-to fixer for traffickers, prosecutors and defense attorneys alike.

 

Recio repeatedly asked Costanzo to query names in a confidential DEA database to keep abreast of federal investigations that would interest his new employers. The two also discussed the timing of high-profile arrests and the exact date in 2019 when prosecutors planned to bring charges against businessman Alex Saab, a top criminal target in Venezuela and suspected bag man for the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

 

In exchange, prosecutors said, Recio secretly funneled $73,000 in purchases to Costanzo, including plane tickets and a down payment on his condo in suburban Coral Gables, Florida. The two also deleted hundreds of calls and messages to a burner phone.

 

Recio's defense attorneys portrayed the former DEA supervisor as a generous friend and mentor who wouldn't have met Macey and Guerra if not for Costanzo's introduction. Former US Air Force general arrested for continuous sexual assault of minor in Hopkins County

 

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — A retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general has been arrested for continuous sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14.

 

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Saturday and identified the driver as Mike McClendon, 69, who was “named to be a person of interest in a sexual assault investigation.” Officials said McClendon was then asked to drive to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office to speak with investigators, later arrested and taken to the Hopkins County Jail. Records show that the offense date was January 1, 2014.

 

McClendon graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1975 and was awarded the air force distinguished service medal for his actions during the global war on terror which began on September 11, 2001. McClendon retired from the Air Force in 2009.

 

McClendon was later released from the Hopkins County Jail after posting a $100,000 bond.

Patrick Morrisey is GOP candidate for governor

Patrick Morrisey, a three-term attorney general, has won the Republican nomination for governor.

The governor’s seat opened up because two-term Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, is up against a term limit. He is running for U.S. Senate.

 

Competitors for the Republican nomination included Morrisey, two-term Secretary of State Mac Warner, former House Judiciary Chairman Moore Capito and businessman Chris Miller.

 

With 98% of the votes in, Morrisey had 71,737.

 

His closest competitor, Capito, had 60,647. Miller had 44,769, and Warner had 36,987.

 

“Thank you West Virginia. What an incredible night. We did it,” Morrisey said to supporters at his campaign headquarters. “We never give up.”

 

He said his campaign sent a message: “You do not mess with West Virginia. In West Virginia, we fight, we advance conservative values and boy do we win for our people.”

 

The Republican Governor’s Association swiftly congratulated Morrisey.

 

“Congratulations to Patrick Morrisey on his victory tonight in West Virginia’s Republican gubernatorial primary election,” said RGA Chairman and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. “Patrick Morrisey has stood up to Democrats’ bureaucratic overreach time and time again, and he’ll continue to do just that as West Virginia’s next governor, delivering freedom and economic opportunity to West Virginians across the state.”

 

The only Democrat in the race for governor is Huntington Mayor Steve Williams.

 

“I think I can help,” Williams said on MetroNews election night coverage. “There are areas that need massive infrastructure additions. We need to make sure we’re working so hard to be able to compete with the rest of the world that we go at warp speed.”

 

He said he’ll gear up for a competitive election toward the fall, including the fundraising that can help with communication. “I can’t be everywhere at once, so I have to have the resources to let the people hear our message — and it is our message,” he said.

 

Capito had the endorsement of Justice, who characterized him as the best option for carrying on his administration’s priorities.

 

Some of the Republican candidates were carrying out family traditions.

 

Capito is the son of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and grandson of three-term Gov. Arch Moore. Miller is the son of Congresswoman Carol Miller and grandson of longtime Ohio Congressman Sam Devine. Warner’s brothers have been involved in politics and public service.

 

Money poured into the governor’s race, with Morrisey, Capito and Miller each having more than a million dollars on hand in the closing weeks. Miller’s campaign reported spending a whopping $2.7 million during the period.

The other leading candidate, Sarah Elfreth, a member of the Maryland Senate, appears to have most of her endorsements from state officials. She has received over US$4 million in donations from the United Democracy Project.

Jeffrey Epstein’s original ‘little black book’ now on sale, expected to fetch $200K

 

“As far as I know, Mr. Epstein’s estate is in no way involved in any manner,” Panagopulos said.

 

“As for the proceeds of the sale, I can say with a great deal of confidence that they will be going to a party that does not, nor ever did have any connection with Mr. Epstein or anyone named in the book.”

 

The 64-page address book, dated by a forensic document examiner to be from around 1997, lists 349 people in total. Among them are celebrities including Robert F. Kennedy Jr, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s wife Cristina Greeven, actress Morgan Fairchild and billionaire Carl Icahn.

 

As with Epstein’s other black book, many of those included have denied meeting or having any connection to the pedophile financier.

 

The book on the auction block has an intriguing history of its own.

 

The book was initially stumbled across in the 90s by Denise Ondayko, a musician who claims she found it while walking down Fifth Avenue in New York City.

 

She held onto it, fascinated by the names inside, but not initially realizing it belonged to Epstein.

 

After realizing the book had numbers for Epstein’s mansions and staff, Ondayko put the book up for sale on eBay in 2020, with Chris Helali purchasing it for $425 and sharing some of its contents with reporters.

 

Auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s declined to auction the book on the grounds of it being in poor taste, but Helali was convinced to partner with Alexander’s by New York City antiques collector and expert, Billy Leroy, according to the Daily Beast.

 

Alexander’s noted interested bidders can come to the auction houses’ Maryland office to inspect the book after submitting a two day notice. Private bidding is open until June 15.

 

Once the auction closes, the top two bidders will be notified via FedEx and given the chance to make one final offer before a winner is chosen……….

Images and videos of cartel members in tactical gear with intimidating military-grade weapons are meant to instill fear, but "the scariest part" of violence in Mexico "is the bad guys don't look like bad guys," Armes said.

 

"When you capture these people and line them up, and you look at their faces, they look like your gardener, the waitress who served you dinner at a restaurant, the little old grandmother down the street," he said.

 

Police arrested three people in the investigation and the first suspect was charged last week for “forced disappearance,” according to a press release from the Baja California Attorney General’s Office.

 

“For the crime of forced disappearance committed by private individuals, the Attorney General’s Office of Baja California achieved the connection to the trial of Jesús Gerardo ‘N’, alias ‘El Kekas’, who will remain in preventive detention after his involvement in the crime committed to the detriment of two brothers of Australian origin and an American in Ensenada,” they said.

In 2020, Netflix released a documentary series titled “Filthy Rich,” based on the book by the same name. The series examined how sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was able to continue to enjoy his wealth and power even after Palm Beach, Florida police had built a case that he had sexually-assaulted more than a dozen young girls – many from public schools in middle-class areas surrounding the mansions of Palm Beach.

 

A sweetheart deal between the Florida State Attorney and the U.S. Department of Justice allowed Epstein to serve just 13 months in jail from June 2008 to July 2009, most of it in a work release program in which he was driven to an office daily by his chauffeured limousine. Epstein was allowed to be on the loose for another decade until the Department of Justice was embarrassed into arresting Epstein on federal sex trafficking charges on July 6, 2019, following an explosive series of articles about Epstein’s victims by Julie Brown in the Miami Herald. (Epstein died in a Manhattan jail on August 10, 2019, a little more than a month after his arrest. His death was ruled a suicide by the New York City Medical Examiner.)

 

Despite Epstein’s earlier arrest in Florida and sensational headlines that followed, Epstein was able to continue his long-term banking relationship with the largest bank in the United States – JPMorgan Chase – until at least 2013. (JPMorgan Chase is now a five-count felon itself, able to endlessly cut sweetheart deals with the U.S. Department of Justice.)

 

One of Epstein’s protectors at JPMorgan Chase was Mary Erdoes – who continues to serve as CEO of the bank’s Asset & Wealth Management business that caters to the ultra-wealthy.

 

Erdoes may never get as “filthy rich” as Epstein, but she has sold $29 million of her JPMorgan Chase stock since just before Epstein’s arrest in 2019. That includes the following amounts: $3.9 million so far this year; $3.7 million in 2023 as headlines flew around the world over the Epstein-related allegations against the bank made by the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands in federal court in Manhattan; $3.9 million in 2022; $7.4 million in 2021; $2.4 million in 2020; and less than three months before Epstein was indicted in 2019, Erdoes sold $7.95 million. These dollar amounts do not include the millions in stock sales that Erdoes made, ostensibly to pay taxes on stock awards.

 

How did Erdoes come by all of this stock in the bank? The company granted it to Erdoes on the basis of good performance.

 

This is what the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands alleged in a federal lawsuit last year against JPMorgan Chase and Erdoes: (Epstein owned a private island and compound in the U.S. Virgin Islands.)

 

“In 2006, a JP Morgan Rapid Response Team noted that Epstein ‘routinely’ made cash withdrawals in amounts from $40,000 to $80,000 several times per month, totaling over $750,000 per year. In addition, Mary Erdoes admitted in her deposition that JP Morgan was aware by 2006 that Epstein was accused of paying cash to have underage girls and young women brought to his home. In the years that followed, JP Morgan employees, including senior executives, emailed internally that Epstein was under investigation or had been sued for trafficking or sexual abuse. This includes an email in 2010 between Mary Erdoes and Jes Staley regarding a federal investigation of Epstein for child trafficking; a 2011 email summarizing a few 2010 news stories connecting Epstein to human trafficking and promising to ‘monitor the accounts and cash usage closely going forward;’ and a 2011 compliance memo noting that ‘[n]umerous articles detail various law enforcement agencies investigating Jeffrey Epstein for allegedly participating in child trafficking and molesting underage girls’ and that ‘Epstein had settled a dozen civil lawsuits out of court from his victims regarding solicitation for an undisclosed amount.’ Internal emails also questioned who Epstein’s clients were, circulating an article regarding whether Epstein was running a Ponzi scheme.

 

“Indeed, Epstein’s behavior was so widely known at JPMorgan that senior executives joked about Epstein’s interest in young girls. In 2008, for example, Mary Erdoes received an email asking her whether Epstein was at an event ‘with miley cyrus.’ In her deposition, Mary Erdoes testified that JP Morgan terminated Epstein as a customer in 2013 after she became aware that the withdrawals were ‘actual cash.’ However, Epstein had made substantial cash withdrawals every year he banked with JP Morgan….”

U.S. MILITARY SURVEILLANCE BLIMP REPORTEDLY SHOT DOWN OVER NORTHEASTERN SYRIA (VIDEOS)

 

A large surveillance aerostat of the United States military crashed on May 15 near the town of Rimelan in the northeastern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.

 

Videos posted to social networks showed the aerostat falling from the sky and later its wreckage on the ground near Rimelan, where the U.S. maintains a base. American fighter jets were reportedly spotted flying over the area at the time of the incident.

 

The base in Rimelan is one of several military installations the U.S. maintains in Syria, mainly in the northeastern governorates of al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor as well as in the southeastern area of al-Tanf, under the pretext of fighting ISIS remnants. At least 900 troops are deployed there.

 

Some Syrian activists said that the aerostat crashed as a result of a malfunction, while others alleged that it was in fact shot down. The Pentagon is yet to clarify what happened.

 

The U.S. first deployed aerostats in its bases in Syria years ago. However, they were much smaller in size than the one that crashed near Rimelan.

 

The large size of the aerostat suggests that it was equipped with advanced surveillance systems, very possibly an aerial radar.

 

U.S. forces in Syria and neighboring Iraq were attacked more than a hundred times, mainly using suicide drones, after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip last October, with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.

 

The IRI, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions in Iraq, suspended attacks against U.S. forces last February after the death of three American troops in a drone strike on a base in Jordan, reportedly upon a request from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Nevertheless, the group escalated attacks against Israel starting from March using suicide drones and cruise missiles.

 

The U.S. may have deployed an early warning radar aerostat in northeastern Syria in order to improve the protection of its forces there as well as to help Israel rebel attacks by the IRI.

 

Based on this, it is possible that the aerostat was shot down by none other than the IRI. Rimelan base is located less than 25 kilometers from Iraq, meaning that it could have been targeted using a medium-range air defense system deployed on the Iraqi side of the border.

 

The IRI has already used a similar system when it shot down a U.S. MQ-9 combat drone over the northeastern Iraqi governorate of Diyala on January 18.

This is how the New York Times reported Erdoes’ role with Epstein in August 2019: “When compliance officers at JPMorgan Chase conducted a sweep of their wealthy clients a decade ago, they recommended that the bank cut its ties to the financier Jeffrey E. O’Neill writes further in the statement filed with the court last year:

 

“Human trafficking under U.S. law was transformed with the enactment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (the TVPA) in 2000. The TVPA equipped law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocates with new tools and resources to mount a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to combat modern forms of slavery both domestically and internationally…

 

“In reference to sex trafficking of a minor with great relevance to the numerous victims at the hands of Jeffrey Epstein, minors need not demonstrate force, fraud, or coercion were used against them to induce them to engage in a commercial sex act. Rather, U.S. law has firmly established that minors cannot consent to commercial sex. Additionally, there is recognition that many forms of human trafficking do not involve force but rather occur through psychological manipulation against victims.”

 

O’Neill indicated that “Based on the review of the 17 victim statements contained within the July 25, 2006 Palm Beach Police Department Incident Report, more than ten victims were under the age of 18. The elements of child sex trafficking were present as the allegations referenced a commercial sex act involving a minor and there is no such thing as a ‘child prostitute.’ The allegations reflected a textbook definition of human trafficking.”

 

O’Neill put the blame for the expansion of Epstein’s sex trafficking ring at the feet of JPMorgan Chase, writing:

 

“Had JPMC cooperated with federal law enforcement and [Redacted]….Epstein would have been federally charged at a much earlier date. He likely would not have received the Florida Non-Prosecution Agreement, and he would have been imprisoned for the sex trafficking and money laundering crimes that he committed at an earlier time, thereby shrinking his overall list of victims.”

 

The long-tenured Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, was deposed in the U.S. Virgin Islands court case. His narrative is that he lived a cloistered existence in a corner office on the 48th floor of 270 Park Avenue where even the top executives who directly reported to him and worked only “a couple hundred feet” away from his office, never shared with Dimon their knowledge of, and meetings over, the bank’s concerns about Epstein’s massive withdrawals of hard cash, his prior history as a jailed sex offender in Florida, or his appearance on the front page of the New York Post in 2011 with the giant, all caps bold headline: “PRINCE AND PERV,” featuring a photo of Prince Andrew and Epstein, and the commentary: “Randy Andy with NYC sex creep.”

 

Somehow, the fact that Epstein was referring to JPMorgan Chase some of the richest and most politically-connected men in the world also escaped Dimon’s perch in that corner office. According to the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Epstein referred the following individuals to the bank as clients: the sixth richest man in the world, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates; the ninth richest man in the world, Google co-founder and billionaire Sergey Brin; the Sultan of Dubai, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem; media and real estate billionaire Mort Zuckerman; former U.S. Treasury Secretary and former Harvard President Larry Summers, and numerous others.

Rumble Sues YouTube for Over $1 Billion in Damages

 

On Monday, video streaming platform Rumble announced it is suing YouTube parent company Alphabet for over a billion dollars in damages.

 

The suit claims that “Google exploits significant conflicts of interest that stem from its multiple roles in this electronically traded marketplace,” and is therefore able “to pocket a supra-competitive portion of every advertising dollar that passes through the Ad Tech markets it controls, ad-revenue that rightly should have passed through to publishers like Rumble and its content creators.” Rumble added to the criticism that Alphabet was acting as a monopoly, referencing established antitrust precedence.

 

This will be the second lawsuit Rumble has carried out against Google in a handful of years, with the first being the 2021 lawsuit over Alphabet’s self-preference in search results. The earlier lawsuit also confronted Alphabet for its relationship with Android and preloaded bundles of their apps on Android devices.

 

A little over a year ago, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and eight other states joined in a lawsuit alleging Sherman antitrust violations. The complaint alleges, “competition in the ad tech space is broken, for reasons that were neither accidental nor inevitable. One industry behemoth, Google, has corrupted legitimate competition in the ad tech industry by engaging in a systematic campaign to seize control of the wide swath of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers, and brokers, to facilitate digital advertising.”

 

The European Union (EU) fined Google €1.49 billion for “abusive practices in online advertising” in 2019.

 

Rumble, headquartered in Longboat Key, Florida, was founded in 2013 with the aim to be a free speech alternative to YouTube. It has grown as creators, who have felt they have been unjustly persecuted by YouTube’s moderation policies, joined its competitor’s platform. Rumble stock currently gives them just under a $2 billion dollar market value. While YouTube makes just over 10 percent of Alphabet revenue, Alphabet currently trades at a $2.1 trillion market cap.

 

Business leaders may note that the prospects of a much smaller company legally targeting a larger competitor are usually not great. However, with the DOJ and EU having made similar legal claims, their likelihood of winning the suit may be stronger.

Heard an Emergency Alert come through on the radio in the car (was not received on my Galaxy 5 - haven't had an alert since I moved out the the city)

 

Weird thing was - it came through as a PRESIDENTIAL ALERT. We do not have a President in Canada (last I heard). Even double-verified it with the person that did receive it (they have an older phone than mine).

 

Just wondering if all of Ontario received this one, or just my area?

I tested the new gpt4-o by asking questions using the almost extinct manchurian language and it wasn't able to understand me.

Not sure if my pronunciation is off or gpt4-o just struggles with manchurian.

Gpt4-o has a good standard mandarin accent, but does not switch to regional chinese accents very well.

I was not able to get it to speak the southern vietnamese accent, but it can do the northern one decently.

In Mandarin chinese I was able to get gpt4-o to use Chinese to tutor me in strong monoidal functor application and linear algebra with generally good results.

Definitely a cool tool for learning, but it struggles in certain areas still.

Might use it to brush up on my spanish next.

Anon digs are often not notabled. One of the reasons is that bakers have maybe 15 seconds to evaluate whether notable or not. While it's easy to do so with articles, digs are often not presented with enough formatting or background info to allow baker to easily eval. Sometimes over the course of a bread, other anons will develop a dig, and then baker can go back and put it together.

Tips:

  • name the Dig and put it in bold

  • include a brief description so bakers who weren't here last bread know 'sup

CORRUPTION IN UKRAINE 2021: UNDERSTANDING, PERCEPTION, PREVALENCE — SUMMARY 1/2

According to the survey of the population, corruption ranks third among the main problems (following the high cost of living and hostilities), the list of which was offered to the respondents –68.6% of the population consider corruption to be a very serious problem. The analysis of data in the dynamics shows that at the end of 2021, compared to the previous research wave, the problem of corruption moved from the second to the third place in the ranking of problems amid rising prices and the expected aggravation of the military conflict with the Russian Federation. According to the survey of the entrepreneurs, corruption ranks second – 73.3% of entrepreneurs interviewed consider corruption to be a very serious problem.

 

Like in the previous research waves, the respondents (both the population and entrepreneurs) are not quite aware of behavioral patterns which seem to be corruption, but actually they are not corrupt from the point of view of the law, and vice versa. For example, depending on the type of the proposed “projective situation”, 13.3% to 70.7% of respondents consider some cases to be corruption, but they are not, according to the current legislation. Entrepreneurs have somewhat greater understanding (vs. the population) of cases which are manifestations of corruption and which are not.

 

Speaking about the indicator of perception of the prevalence of corruption in general, then 85.4% of the population and 84.2% of entrepreneurs believe that corruption is somewhat or very common in Ukraine. The general index of perception of the prevalence of corruption on a 5-point scale equals 4.39 points for the public (increased slightly compared to 4.46 points in 2020) and 4.34 points for entrepreneurs (decreased slightly compared to 4.26 points in 2020).

 

At the same time, the index of perception of the prevalence of corruption in the field where the surveyed entrepreneurs work is 2.25 points on a 5-point scale.

According to the population, the top 3 fields in terms of the prevalence of corruption are the judicial system, customs service, and land relations. They are followed by border control, movement of people and goods across the boundary line with the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas, the activities of the National Police, the SBU and the prosecutor’s office (except for the activities of the Patrol Police, service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), and medical Services.

 

According to the entrepreneurs, corruption is the most prevalent in the fields of issuance of permits and extraction of minerals, and customs; they are followed by privatization of enterprises, forestry, public procurements, and land relations. Indices of perception of the prevalence of corruption in all these fields exceed 4 points on a 5-point scale.

 

41.8% of the population and 36.1% of entrepreneurs believe that the level of corruption in Ukraine has increased over the last 12 months. For the population, this indicator is by 15.4% higher than that of the previous year.

Both the population and enrtepreneurs are most likely to consider the central authorities responsible for overcoming corruption along with such specialized institutions as the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and (in case with the population) the National Agency on Corruption Prevention.

 

According to the population, among the authorities, the President and his Office, the Security Service of Ukraine and local authorities fight corruption most effectively, while the Cabinet of Ministers, ministries, and the Verkhovna Rada are the least effective in combating corruption. The biggest hit has come to Wiley, a 217-year-old publisher based in Hoboken, N.J., which Tuesday will announce that it is closing 19 journals, some of which were infected by large-scale research fraud. In the past two years, Wiley has retracted more than 11,300 papers that appeared compromised, according to a spokesperson, and closed four journals. The indicators of the corruption experience of the respondents by research field were identified, and corruption situations that could occur when citizens and entrepreneurs applied for services in various fields (or during contacts with representatives of relevant agencies and institutions) were analyzed.

In addition to the analysis of corruption experience, we also analyzed who initiates the corruption situation. In all the analyzed situations, the initiators are mostly the representatives of the party that provides services (government officials, representatives of supplier companies, administrators or specialists of educational and medical institutions, etc.). In general, over the last 12 months, 14.4% of the population of Ukraine and 4.7% of business representatives were the initiators of corruption. At the same time, 25.9% of the population and 12.1% of the entrepreneurs were involved in corruption because they were forced to do so. Thus, routine petty corruption is more than two times more common than corruption in business, and citizens who found themselves in a corruption situation were three times more likely than entrepreneurs to be the initiators of such situations.

 

The summarized indicators of the assessment of the corruption experience of the population by field are shown in the table below. The public most often go through a corruption experience during their contacts with state or municipal medical institutions. More than half of citizens (55.7%) turn to such institutions during the year. Thus, despite the fact that the level of corruption in health care is lower than in such fields as the activities of law enforcement agencies, construction and land relations, it’s medical institutions where the majority of Ukrainians have corruption experience (39.4% of those who applied for services). So, in general, more than a fifth of Ukrainians (21.9%) went through corruption experience in medical institutions personally or know about such experience from their family members.

 

The summarized indicators of the assessment of corruption experience of entrepreneurs are shown in the table 2 below. The entrepreneurs contact the state less often than the population and are less likely to encounter corruption situations during these contacts. It is worth noting that the level of corruption is the lowest in the field of tax authorities, while the contacts with it are the most frequent. The fields of construction and land relations, customs, electricity, gas and water supply are in the lead among the most corrupt fields.

The following three fields can be singled out to conduct a comparative analysis of the corruption experience of the public and entrepreneurs:

1) services for connection and maintenance of electricity, gas, water supply and sewerage systems;

2) law enforcement activities;

3) construction and land relations

 

When resolving the issues with suppliers of electricity, gas and water, the risk of encountering corruption is the same for entrepreneurs and the public. And when dealing with the issues of construction and land relations and when contacting law enforcement agencies, the risk of going through corruption is higher for the population.

In accordance with the Methodology of the standard survey on corruption in Ukraine, 5 indicators of the effectiveness of the state anti-corruption policy were calculated, which are listed in the table below.

 

There is a gradual increase in the share of the population that has a negative attitude towards manifestations of corruption. In 2021, it reached almost half (49.4%) The share of the population that went through corruption experience (according to respondents’ self-assessment of their involvement in corruption) remains stable – slightly exceeding a quarter (26%)1.

 

The share of those willing to report on the ==corruption cases decreased in 2020.

 

However, in 2021, it increased up to 9.8% among the population and to 22.7% among entrepreneurs==. (Hmm Bidan in WH)

An EPA whistleblower has come forward with shocking claims over the government's response to the toxic East Palestine train derailment.

 

Robert Kroutil, a scientist who spent four decades in government agencies, claimed to NewsNation that the EPA strayed from its normal safety procedures when testing for hazardous contamination around the crash site.

 

He alleged that leaders delayed in deploying a chemical testing plane for five days, but still decided that evacuated residents were free to return to their homes after only three days.

 

Residents who returned home quickly reported adverse reactions, including rashes, breathing problems and nausea.

 

'That deployment was the most unusual deployment I’ve ever seen,' Kroutil said of the testing aircraft. 'You just wouldn’t do it that way.'

 

Kroutil originally worked for the Department of Defense, where he worked to develop the Airborne Spectralphotometric Environmental Collection Technology (ASPECT) aircraft, a high-tech plane used to detect levels of chemical contamination in the air.

 

He continued this work when he moved to the EPA to work as a contractor, but said throughout his career he had never seen the aircraft used in the manner that it was in the East Palestine disaster.

 

At the time that officials told residents it was safe for them to return to their homes, EPA Chief Michael Reagan specifically singled out the use of the ASPECT plane as a reason he made the decision.

 

'We’ve had boots on the ground, leading robust air quality testing, including the advanced technology ASPECT plane,' he said.

 

However, procedures normally called for the ASPECT plane to be deployed within hours, and Kroutil said he is still confused why it wasn't deployed in a timely manner, feeling it may have missed key data on the levels of toxicity in the area.

 

'In East Palestine, we had a big delay,' he told NewsNation. 'There was a big delay in getting the aircraft to Pittsburgh.'

 

Asked why officials may have postponed the flight, Kroutil said he is 'still asking myself that question.'

 

Following the derailment on February 3, 20203, he said: 'We should be collecting data on the 4th, the 5th, the 6th (of February), multiple flights on the 7th.

 

'We should be there at least two weeks to monitor the situation.'

I write to follow up my letters of April 23, 2024, and May 1, 2024, concerning the potential manipulation of the stock of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (“TMTG”), which trades on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker “DJT.”

 

As you know, Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) Regulation SHO (“Reg SHO”) guidance clearly states that the only way to establish “reasonable grounds” for short sales of threshold securities like DJT is if the broker-dealer pre-borrows the securities; moreover, “a broker-dealer may not re-apply a locate for intra-day buy to cover trades.”1 SEC guidance also provides that “bona-fide market-making does not include activity that is related to speculative selling strategies for investment purposes of the broker-dealer and is disproportionate to the usual market making patterns or practices of the broker-dealer in that security.”2 Despite this clear guidance, TMTG’s stock has appeared continuously since April 2, 2024, on the Nasdaq Reg SHO Threshold List, which results from persistent failures to deliver (“FTDs”) and can indicate the illegal “naked” short selling of a security.

 

The apparent anomalies surrounding the trading of DJT have become chronic and alarming to TMTG. In the last 30 trading days, an extraordinary volume of DJT shares traded have been shorts, leading to an astonishing quantity of FTDs. In fact, recently published SEC data indicate that FTDs exceeded 1 million DJT shares on eleven separate trading days between April 9, 2024, and April 30, 2024, with a peak of over 2.3 million FTDs on April 29, 2024, alone.3 Data made available to us suggest that serious anomalies may have occurred on that date, as well as on April 30 and May 1.

In addition to obtaining relevant information from FINRA regarding these EBS requests, which could shed light on potential violations of Reg SHO, I again advise you to include in your investigation into this matter requests for the following records:

 

• Consolidated Audit Trail (“CAT”) trading data including trading records, quotes, market maker records, and add/drop records, and CAT tables revealing masked fields such as broker aliases;

• FINRA data including brokers’ short interest data and Trade Reporting Facility (“TRF”) data with brokers’ market participant identifiers (“MPIDs”);

• Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (“DTCC”) information including daily position reports, CNS accounting summaries, participant daily activity statements, universal trade capture data, consolidated trade summaries (M209 records), and correspondent clearing records;

• Reports from DTCC member firms reflecting total shares short since February 14, 2024 (including trading under the ticker ‘DWAC’ prior to March 26, 2024), CAT data for loan/borrow reports, and daily locate and pre-borrow logs.

 

I remain convinced that a robust inquiry is needed to protect shareholders, including TMTG’s retail shareholders, and to ensure that Main Street investors retain their faith in the fairness of U.S. markets. To that end, I am ready and willing to assist your efforts in any way possible.

Biden Official's Rock Performance in Kyiv Sparks Backlash in Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony Blinken's rock performance in Kyiv drew criticism in Ukraine.

 

Blinken performed Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" with Ukrainian punk band 19.99 in Kyiv this week during a visit to the Eastern European nation as it continues to battle for control of its easternmost regions amid a Russian invasion launched in February 2022. During his visit, Blinken pledged that the United States would continue to support Ukraine despite recent delays in aid, which has been crucial to its defense efforts.

 

"The United States is with you. So much of the world is with you. And they're fighting, not just for a free Ukraine, but for the free world. And the free world is with you, too," Blinken said during the performance.

 

However, the performance was met with a chilly reception by some Ukrainian politicians as footage of the performance has circulated across social media on Wednesday.

 

Bogdan Yaremenko, who serves as the people's deputy of Ukraine, wrote in a Facebook post the message Blinken was aiming for did not connect given delays in recent aid.

 

"The message is not hard to understand, but it's not getting through," he wrote, according to a translation from The Kyiv Post.

 

While the Biden administration and Blinken have pushed for Ukraine aid, those funds spent months held up in Congress amid opposition from some conservative Republicans who believed the money should instead be spent at the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

Proponents of Ukraine aid argue that helping Ukraine defend itself is in the best interests of U.S. security as well as Ukraine, as it will result in a weakened Russia. Congress last month passed the foreign aid bill, which included $60 billion for Ukraine.

 

"Half a year of waiting for the decision of the American Congress—to allocate money to swing in a free and still alive Ukraine, or after all on the wall with Mexico, took the lives of many, many defenders of the free world. Losses that could have been avoided if we had something to conduct a counter-battery fight and push the Russian aviation away from the front line," Yaremenko wrote.

 

Valeriy Chaly, the former Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, said, "With all due respect, it's a mistake. The message is wrong," according to the Post.

 

Svitlana Matvienko, executive director of the Agency for Legislative Initiatives, wrote in a Facebook post that she found the performance to be inappropriate, noting the performance came as Russia launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv oblast.

 

"Kharkiv region is wiped off the face of the earth, people are leaving their homes, Kharkiv is under constant blows of CABs, Sumy region is preparing, and a top US official sings songs in a Kiev bar," she wrote.

 

She continued, "Yet all this is also about a complete misunderstanding of the situation and a very specific feeling of empathy. And I am amazed at how the global bargaining machine of pundits/advisors/bureaucrats digested this unsuccessful idea."

 

Newsweek reached out to the State Department for comment via its online contact form.

Britain against sending Western troops to Ukraine – defense minister

Grant Shapps did not rule out sending former soldiers to train Ukrainians

Putting British or other NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine would not make sense, but there are other ways of helping Kiev, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has said.

 

Some officials in Kiev have proposed sending Western military veterans as civilian contractors to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the country in order to quickly raise enough brigades to offset battlefield losses.

 

“I don’t want to step over that line that puts British, sort of, troops on the ground in Ukraine. I don’t think that makes sense to do. But what I do think is sensible is potentially moving training closer,” Shapps said on Wednesday, speaking to a Telegraph podcast about the situation in Ukraine.

 

“There may be other models that we could look at. Not something I would want to go into in detail currently,” the defense minister added.

 

He pointed out that theUK has already trained 65,000 Ukrainian soldierssince 2014, most of them since February 2022, and that London’s commitment to Kiev “is absolutely rock-solid.”

 

Shapps admitted that the situation north of Kharkov is rather dire for the Ukrainian military and blamed it on “the civilized world” not paying attention. “I think the world took its eye off the ball,” Shapps told the Telegraph, but added,“I think it’s rescuable, at this stage.”WTF

 

According to Shapps, other “civilized” countries should follow the UK´s lead and send even more money to Kiev, to ensure that Ukraine has all the weapons, training and equipment it needs to defeat Russia.

 

Earlier this week, Shapps told Times Radio that London saw “no sense at all” in persuading or “strong-arming” Kiev into accepting any peace conditions and “giving up some of their territory” to Moscow.

 

Boris Johnson, who was the British prime minister at the time, made a similar argument during his visit to Kiev in April 2022, which was seen as crucial in persuading Ukraine to reject a proposed armistice with Russia and continue fighting.

 

Shapps was appointed defense minister last August.Unlike his predecessorBen Wallace,he has no military experience, having been a printing salesmanbefore entering politics. He has served in a variety of cabinet posts under several Tory governments, from housing and transportation to Home Office and net zero.

Now, what can the average personal investor do to stop their own shares being shorted, believe me, your own broker, if approached, WILL sell your own shares that they hold on your behalf as a nominee account.

 

There are two things you can do, the first is to certificate them but this is not obvious to everyone’s advantage but the alternative solution is simple. All you do is to phone your broker and put an order in saying that you wishto place your shares for sale at, for argument's sake, double today’s price.As they are 'on order' they cannot be lent out by your broker and in turn, you are reducing the amount of 'free shares' out there that can be used for shorting purposes. And don't forget to move your limit order up when the price starts to recover, then, that way your shares can't be shorted - not much but helps.

 

Although an individual personal investor will not normally have enough shares to halt a concerted shorting attack if a large number of holders did this it would reduce the overall amount of shares that they could get their hands on.

In my opinion well worth doing if not only for the knowledge that your own shares cannot and will not be used in a short attack against the very share that you own.

The article then Senator Biden had read was “The Lie and the Image,” by Tom Wicker, which appeared in the New York Times on May 25, 1975.

 

The paper to which Senator Biden refers is “Home to Roost,” a lecture Arendt read on May 20, 1975 at Boston's Fanueil Hall, which also was broadcast by National Public Radio. The lecture was then published in the New York Review of Books. Arendt died suddenly a few months later in December of 1975, making "Home to Roost" one of her last published essays. “Home to Roost” was posthumously republished in a remarkable collection of essays Responsibility and Judgment, edited by Jerome Kohn.

 

“Home to Roost” is a complicated essay that embraces Arendt’s lifelong concerns with totalitarian lying and theoretical obfuscation, alongside her deep fear about the corruption and failure of the American republican tradition of free government. In the article Senator Biden read about Arendt’s speech, Tom Wicker writes, “No short article could possibly do justice to the extraordinary range and richness of Miss Arendt’s paper.” Wicker himself focused on Arendt’s highlighting of the “American tendency to substitute an image or a phrase for an unwanted reality,” which, she argued, “had grown to ‘gigantic proportions’ because the techniques of public relations had been borrowed from their usual function—‘to help distribute merchandise’—and had been ‘permitted to invade our political life.’”

 

The core of Arendt's talk in Boston is that the rise of public relations has made us more concerned with images than with reality. We fight the Vietnam war not because it will bring us real benefits but because it will burnish our image as a global superpower. We need to stimulate the economy and foster economic growth not because it will make the economy better and produce needed goods, but because people need jobs. We care more about the image of being a superpower and the image of being an economic power than ‘the stark, naked brutality of facts, of things as they are’”—namely, that American power and American wealth are eroding, propped up by insane policies justified by unreal theories. Images stand opposed to reality just as theories cover up reality. Arendt opposes the search for “deeper causes” that allows us to ignore the facts that stare us in the face.

 

Much of the analysis in “Home To Roost” is based upon her prior account of the deception around the Vietnam war in her essay “Lying in Politics.” When she read the Pentagon Papers in 1971, Arendt saw that "the basic issue raised by the papers [was] deception." All sorts of lies made the American war in Vietnam possible, including phony body counts, doctored damage reports, and fake progress reports. The war in Vietnam had showed Arendt that the United States could fight a decade-long war including pacification and relocation programs, defoliation, napalm, and antipersonnel bullets all in the name of making Vietnam and the world safe for democracy while preventing communist aggression.

 

One lesson Arendt took is how easy it is for problem-solvers and technocrats to conjure geo-political theories justifying military intervention. All too easily, Arendt shows, one can move seamlessly from a hypothesis such as the domino theory to a fact, that we must fight a war to save Vietnam.

 

Writing of those “intellectuals” who justified the war, Arendt concludes: “They needed no facts, no information; they had a ‘theory,’ and all data that did not fit were denied or ignored…. Defactualization and problem-solving were welcomed because disregard of reality was inherent in the policies and goals themselves.”

 

In “Home to Roost,” Arendt argues that our collective aversion to facts and embrace of theories and images has come home to roost. Theories aim to discover the roots and “deeper causes” of what is happening. “There exists a plethora of theories about the ‘deeper’ cause for the outbreak of the First or Second World War based not on the melancholy wisdom of hindsight but on the speculations, grown into convictions, about the nature and fate of capitalism or socialism, of the industrial or postindustrial age, the role of science and technology, and so on.” Such theories, she continues, “must be plausible, that is, they must contain statements that most reasonable men at the particular time can accept; they cannot require an acceptance of the unbelievable.”

The problem with theories is that they provide a plausible explanation for what happens, one that makes sense. And yet, what history and the world show over and again, is that the world follows no clear and plausible explanations. History is comprised of unbelievable events and extraordinary happenings. What happened in Vietnam, Arendt writes, was unbelievable, just as was what happened in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. The demand and the desire for “deeper causes” and theories that explain "what is" is a flight from the “shock of reality.” It is a refusal to simply tell what is, which in its stark inexplicability has “never been welcomed and often not been tolerated at all.”

 

But the crises of our times, Arendt argues, are precisely not plausible; they are “unbelievable.” Here Arendt returns to a theme of her work from her book Origins of Totalitarianism, that the effort to explain extraordinary events with analogies to history or plausible explanations insulates us from the “shock of reality.” There are times, she writes, when we have to resist the urge to explain the crises of our time and, instead, face “the stark, naked brutality of facts, of things as they are.”

 

The essay Joe Biden requested to read is about, therefore, the crisis of intellectuals and pundits who seek to explain the world clearly according to deeper causes and theories, and in doing so take flight from reality. This rise of self-deception through image making, Arendt worried, was corrupting the American tradition of dealing directly with reality absent high theory and ideology.

 

It is unclear if Arendt ever sent Senator Biden her paper or whether the Senator ever read it. But “Home To Roost” is, as one of Arendt’s last public lectures and publications, something of her final testament, a warning that the grand experiment in freedom that is the American Republic was in danger of coming to an end. What threatened the American Republic was a refusal to look at the facts themselves—the fact that "among the many unprecedented events of this century the swift decline in power of the United States should be given due consideration." It is this fact that Arendt says is being hidden by the craving for simplistic theories and deep causal analysis that actually obfuscate the fundamental fact of American decline.

 

Lying as a Way of Life

A refusal to see and "say what is" becomes a mode of lying as a way of life. Lying is nothing new in politics. Politicians have always lied. And lies “have always been regarded as justifiable in emergencies.” But what Arendt finds alarming is the cancerous growth of the Madison Avenue public relations machine to encompass all areas of political and economic life such that lying and the evasion of reality is made into a matter of principle, so that living with theories and images overlays “what is,’ and thus lying becomes a way of life.

 

“Lying as a way of life,” Arendt observes, was “quite successful in countries under totalitarian rule.” In totalitarian regimes, lying was guided by ideologies and enforced by terror. Only a totalitarian regime can make bold and obvious lies believable. They do so, first, by choosing plausible but simple ideological fictions—that a conspiracy of Jews controls world politics—and organizing a logical coherent narrative around that fiction. These “facts” are not objective, but they are believed as part of ideological fantasy, they become as “real and untouchable an element in their lives as the rules of arithmetic.” And since the “fact” of a Jewish conspiracy is not a fact but the linchpin of a logically coherent world, it is foolproof against reality-based arguments.

In totalitarian states, lying was guided by an ideology and thus had a logical consistency that fully divorced the lies from reality, which is always complicated and never logical. Totalitarianism promises to lonely masses what they want: a logically coherent fantasy that replaces a messy and uncomfortable reality. But the totalitarian states could only cement their lies through terror–by normalizing a “sheer criminality” by which lies would be certified by mass murder. For one sure way to “prove” the fact of Jewish world conspiracy is to exterminate the Jews and make them into the enemy you claim that they are. By bringing criminality into the political process on a gigantic scale, Nazi Germany secured belief in the fictional ideological reality.

 

Arendt did not believe that totalitarianism as it existed in Nazi Germany or Bolshevist Russia was a threat in the United States. Aware of the dangers of totalitarianism, public opinion in the United States, she saw, was not prepared to condone mass murder, camps, and terror. And yet, writing in the wake of the blatant lying in Vietnam, the burglaries, and the cover-ups of Watergate, rampant inflation, and the refusal to own up to the economic crises in the country, she does believe that public opinion appeared ready to condone “all political transgressions short of murder.” In other words, if "lying as a way of life" might not support the kinds of criminality evidence in totalitarian states, it might serve to obfuscate and justify a lower level of criminality in a declining American Republic.

 

Arendt writes that American politicians consistently get away with lying and even blatant criminality. Her primary example is Richard Nixon and Watergate. While Nixon’s crimes “were a far cry from the sort of criminality with which we once were inclined to compare it,” the facts are clear that Nixon’s administration included many persons who—if not criminals—were so attracted to the “aura of power, its glamorous trappings,” that they came to see themselves as above the law. Nixon, and those around him, assumed that they could and would get away with their crimes because the believed that “all people are actually like them.” They thought that all people are, in the end, corruptible. Thus they assumed that judges, the press, and politicians could be bought or cowed. They sought to deny the reality of their crimes by spreading the image of human corruptibility—all men would have done the same.

 

Against the logical ideological coherence backed by terror that supports the big lie in totalitarian states, Arendt sees that the lying in the American Republic of the 1970s was based upon the hidden persuasive power of images. What Nixon sought was to replace rule by terror with rule by “persuasion enforced by pressure and the manipulation of public opinion.” And to Nixon’s shock, the public was not amenable to such pressure and manipulation by the Executive. Luckily, Arendt argues, Nixon was was wrong. The press and the American republican institutions did fight back. “Nixon’s greatest mistakeaside from not burning the tapes in timews to have misjudged the incorruptibility of the courts and the press.”

And yet, Arendt's analysis of why those civil servants and appointees who worked for Nixon stayed is eerily familiar: “In retrospect, it looks as though there existed no such grand schemes but ‘only’ the firm resolve to do away with any law, constitutional or not, that stood in the way of shifting designs inspired by greed and vindictiveness rather than by the drive for total power or any coherent political program.” Nixon’s regime was not ideological, but obsessed with power. “In other words, it is as though a bunch of con men, rather untalented mafiosi, had succeeded in appropriating to themselves the government ‘of the mightiest power on earth.’”

 

While the public in the case of Watergate rejected Nixon’s efforts to turn the government into a a cabal of con men and rather untalented mafioisi, there is still the fact that those indicted and convicted for their roles in the coverup were “overwhelmed with very high offers from publishers, the press and television, and the campuses to tell their story.” This demand for “self-serving” stories by the criminals is, Arendt says, part of a continuing “quest for more lies and fabrications.” It was and is a sign that the public is addicted to lies and craves comforting stories.

 

In the end, what Arendt saw is how the self-justifying rationalizations of the con men could be persuasive to masses of people. That they were not—that Nixon was unsuccessful in the end in persuading public opinion to excuse his minor infractions—does not mean that a future President would not succeed in just such a persuasive effort.

 

The point of Arendt's essay is that the addiction to images and theories and “deeper causes” have habituated the intellectuals as well as the masses to simplistic and exculpatory fictions. What no one wanted to see was the corruption and rot at the core of the Republic. And when the rot is so visible that it cannot be denied, it is easier to justify it and explain it than it is to rebel against it as the abomination that it is. This is what Arendt means by when she says that our aversion to reality has come home to roost:

“When the facts come home to roost, let us try at least to make them welcome, let us not try to escape into some utopias—images, theories, or sheer follies. It was the greatness of this Republic to give due account to the best and the worst in man, all for the sake of Freedom.”

Non-Citizens to be Removed from Ohio's Voter Rolls Prior to 2024 Election

Non-citizens are the focus of Ohio's Secretary of State Frank LaRose's latest initiative to clean up the state's voter rolls. A recent review of the rolls by the Secretary of State's Public Integrity Division and Office of Data Analytics and Archives found, according to a May 14 press release, "137 voter registrations assigned to Ohio residents who have twice confirmed their non-citizenship status to the BMV. Ohio law requires two instances of individuals submitting documentation to the BMV indicating that they are not United States citizens. The individual must also have either registered to vote, updated a registration, or voted in Ohio between the two instances of submitting the required documentation to the BMV."

 

LaRose stated, "Ohioans overwhelmingly passed an amendment to our state constitution which makes it clear that only U.S. citizens can vote in our elections," said Secretary LaRose. "It is my duty under the law to uphold the constitution, and the legislature has explicitly tasked me with ensuring that only eligible citizens can register and vote. It's important to recognize that some of these registrations may be the result of an honest mistake," LaRose continued.

 

"These may be well-meaning people trying to pursue the American dream, and communication barriers sometimes result in a registration form being submitted in error. We need to help them get that cleared up before an accidental registration becomes an illegal vote that could result in a felony conviction or even deportation."

 

To cross-check citizenship data, the Secretary also requested additional access to records held by the Biden administration. The requests include:

• Access to the SAVE database, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration resource that helps verify citizenship status.

• Access to citizenship-identifying records from the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration databases.

• Federal district court records that disclose individuals disqualified from jury service due to a lack of U.S. citizenship.

 

Non-citizen voting has become a significant issue ahead of the 2024 election because the U.S. election system makes it challenging to accurately track non-citizen registrations and non-citizen voters. Due to Biden's open borders policies, the nation's borders have been flooded with illegal aliens, with over 10 million people entering the country since Biden took office in 2021—not including the "gotaways," according to True the Vote's published 611 Project.

 

Ohio Withdrew from ERIC in Spring 2023, Prompting a New System of Maintaining Voter Rolls

The new data analytics team was hired following Ohio's exit from ERIC in the Spring of 2023. LaRose wrote a letter to ERIC on Mar. 6, 2023, proposing reforms in the ERIC system, but his requests were met with resistance. Ohio was the sixth state to withdraw from the ERIC voter registration maintenance system. Since then, LaRose has taken steps to enhance the process of purging illegal registrations from the state's voter rolls. County boards will identify voters whose registrations have been inactive for four years.

 

Aside from removing non-citizens, a May 2 directive asked counties to engage in a more comprehensive effort to ensure the accuracy of the state's rolls.

 

Counties are directed to identify alleged illegal registrations by May 21 and must mail notices by May 31. The state's searchable database of inactive voter registrations will also be updated after May 21.

The ongoing review of possible gaps in Ohio's voter roll maintenance program requires counties to cross-reference voter registrations for the following issues:

 

• Voters who moved but failed to update their addresses in the system. Registrations flagged for cancelation in 2024 were first identified by the U.S. Postal Service's National Change of Address (NCOA) registry in 2020 and have been confirmed inactive for four years.

• Past due removals: The Secretary directed county boards to review registration data for records that may have been previously flagged for removal after the required four-year waiting period. "If the registrations are confirmed again to be inactive and eligible for removal, the boards have been directed to initiate that process. The Secretary of State's Office of Data Analytics and Archive, the first of its kind in the nation, identified this issue as part of an ongoing data integrity investigation."

• Returned acknowledgments: "These new registrations received an acknowledgment notice from a county board of elections that was returned as undeliverable by the Postal Service. By law, the registration must be placed in confirmation status, meaning the voter is notified by forwardable mail that they either need to update the registration or engage in "voter-initiated activity" to avoid cancelation."

• BMV Mismatches: "By law, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles provides identification records to boards of elections used to verify voter registrations, such as a registrant's name, date of birth, last four digits of a Social Security number, driver's license number and whether the person has been identified as deceased. If any of this information mismatches with a voter's registration, the registration must be put into confirmation status, meaning the voter is notified by forwardable mail that they either need to update the registration or engage in "voter-initiated activity" to avoid cancelation."

LaRose is the first Secretary of State in the country to publish a "Registration Readiness roster." The Ohio Secretary of State's website will list the roster for public review. The website allows Ohioans to check inactive registrations before the removal is initiated. LaRose reassured Ohioans that he is committed to election integrity as a top priority, "These steps should give Ohioans confidence that election integrity is our top priority. The process we're initiating this week is just part of a larger, aggressive effort to ensure Ohio is ready for another high-profile presidential election this fall. We'll have more to announce soon."

 

In Ohio, a voter's registration status must meet the following conditions:

 

• The voter was notified no later than Jun. 30, 2020, that they appeared in the NCOA out-of-county database; OR whose notice was returned undeliverable; OR whose BMV records do not reflect voter registration.

• Registered to vote before Feb. 18, 2020

• No voting history since Apr. 28, 2020

• Has not engaged in any "voter-initiated activity" since they received a 2020 notice.

 

Voter-initiated activity includes voting, updating voter registration, submitting an absentee ballot request form, and signing a candidate or issuing a petition verified by a board of elections. Voters in Ohio should use the following form to update their registrations. Once notified, voters will have until Jul. 15 to update registration or engage in voter-initiated activity. Voters who fail to update their registration will be purged from the rolls on Jul. 22. New voter registration applications must be postmarked 30 days before the election to be eligible to vote in that election.

 

In another directive from LaRose, counties purged 26,666 registrations from the rolls in 85 counties in September 2023 before the November election, a decision that was criticized as "reckless" in a letter sent by State Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney (D-Westlake). Another 6,524 abandoned registrations were removed in Cuyahoga, Lucas, and Summit counties following the Nov. 7, 2023 General Election. Over 124,000 voters were also removed from the rolls after the 2022 election.

 

Innovations Ohio also criticized the Secretary of State in an "Ohio's Missing Voters" report published in October 2023. The group attributed the alleged decline (over 3% overall) in voter turnout between 2018 and 2022 to the Secretary's failure to register disadvantaged populations in the state. LaRose took office in 2018.

Trade war intensifies as Biden slaps more tariffs on Chinese products

US president Joe Biden has revealed a new set of major tariff increases which will hit many different Chinese imports as well as impact the shipping of those products.

 

The largest tariffs will be imposed on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminium, and medical equipment. Biden opted to keep in place tariffs imposed during the Trump presidency while others were raised several fold. The first that pops out is the increase of duties on Chinese EV cars from 25% to 100% while semiconductor tariffs doubled from 25% to 50%, and lithium-ion EV battery duties jumped from 7.5% to 25%.

 

“American workers can out-work and out-compete anyone as long as the competition is fair, but for too long it hasn’t been fair. We’re not going to let China flood our market,” Biden said during a speech in front of the White House.

 

However, the tariffs will not hit hard in the short term because some will not take effect until 2026, but for EV batteries, solar, and other specific items, the impact will be immediate.

 

This, however, can hamper Biden’s climate goals and his job creation promises due to it raising the costs of EV production via tariffs on batteries.

 

The White House claimed that these measures will affect around $18bn in imported Chinese goods. But some are nothing more than a headline grab since the tariffs on EVs will not have an important impact since a very small number of those vehicles are imported from China.

 

Data from the US Census Bureau states that the US imported $427bn in goods from China in 2023 and exported just $148bn. This gap has existed for a long time and has become a thorn in Washington’s eye.

 

China, as expected, pushed back against the tariffs, and stated that this move would seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation. The Biden administration believes that the tariffs won’t escalate tensions with China but it will certainly explore ways to respond to the new taxes on its products.

 

These measures are part of the presidential election tussle between Donald Trump and Biden who both, in their own way, support tariffs on Chinese products. Trump’s idea is to have 10% tariffs on all imported products regardless of where they come from and 60% tariffs on all Chinese goods.

 

Lars Jensen, CEO of Vespucci Maritime and an expert in the container shipping industry, said via social media that, purely from a container shipping perspective, the goods to note with increased tariffs are solar panels from China.

 

“More than 50,000 teu is imported into the US each quarter. However, it should here be noted that in 2023 a full 84% of these were imported from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. But in this context, it should be noted that these are Chinese companies who set up operations in Southeast Asia in an attempt to not be subjected to the US/China trade war,” he noted.

 

“Another element to notice from a container shipping perspective is the introduction of a 25% tariff on ship-to-shore cranes from China,” Jensen added.

 

Tariffs on photovoltaic cells used to make solar panels were bumped from 25% to 50% while some critical minerals will have their tariffs raised from nothing to 25%. The tariffs on ship-to-shore cranes will rise to 25% from zero. In 2025 and 2026 tariffs will also be raised on lithium-ion batteries that are not used in electric vehicles, graphite, and permanent magnets.
