A little-known longstanding fossil fuels reduction program that was put in place by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) could very well lead to a 50-cent per gallon cost increase for gasoline and diesel fuel sold in the state. The report, released in September by the state's environmental regulator body, says that California may see the increase of 50 cents per gallon as early as next year and every year after that. The program's fee is in addition to the gas tax increases already put in place by Senate Bill 1 of 2017, where the state authorized an increase in the state's taxes on gas and diesel.

A fire burns down a shopping complex housing 1,400 outlets in Poland’s capital

WARSAW, Poland — A major fire broke out Sunday morning in a vast shopping complex in the Polish capital that housed some 1,400 shops and service outlets and where many of the vendors were from Vietnam.

Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen rising over the vast area.

The fire department said that more than 80% of the Marywilska 44 shopping complex burned in the Bialoleka district of Warsaw, and that the roof caved in.

 

Police reported no injuries, but traders were in despair at the loss of their livelihoods.

The Gazeta Wyborcza daily reported that some Vietnamese vendors wanted to enter to save their goods from the complex, but were blocked by security guards.

The Association of Vietnamese Entrepreneurs in Poland said the blaze meant “great financial losses for merchants,” calling it a “terrible tragedy for thousands of merchants and their families.”

 

Chemical and environmental rescue specialists were among the large numbers of rescue officials who took part in the operation.

Authorities sent a text message warning Warsaw residents about the fire, and telling them to stay home with the windows closed.

Mirbud, an industrial construction company listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, owns the shopping center.

 

Warsaw police said it had begun investigating the blaze, which began at around 3:30 a.m. local time, but hadn’t yet determined the cause.

The Warsaw city administration planned on Monday to discuss financial support for the small traders whose livelihoods were destroyed.

Shopping centers and large shops are usually closed on Sunday because of a ban on trade imposed by the previous government, which had close ties to the catholic church.

However, small business owners are exempt from the ban, and many of the small shops at the center worked on Sundays.

Many range from $20,000 to $40,000 per transfer. That’s a LOT of money in Guatemala. Who are they paying and why?

Low air quality alerts triggered in four northern US states over Canada wildfires

Four northern states have been placed under a low air quality alert as of Monday, as over 100 wildfires blaze in Canada, creating hazy conditions in the states.

 

Hundreds of wildfires in Canada last year caused some of the worst air quality in multiple cities across the United States, forcing millions of Americans to remain indoors. The fires impacted residents in New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and parts of the Midwest.

 

The fires this year have impacted residents in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana so far. Residents in Minnesota were placed in the red "unhealthy" zone on Sunday, because of a “band of very heavy smoke from wildfires in northeast British Columbia.” The alert expanded into Monday, but mostly affects the southern part of the state, per NBC News.

 

The other states had air quality ratings of either "moderate" or "unhealthy," which are marked by the red, orange, and yellow colors. The worst color on the air quality chart overall is maroon, which means the air quality is "hazardous."

 

Children, active adults, and people with respiratory diseases are instructed to avoid outdoor exertion if they are in the red zone. Everyone else should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, according to the American Lung Association. If people are under an orange alert, it means people with health conditions should limit outdoor activity, but if they are under a yellow alert then sensitive groups should consider limiting outdoor activities.

 

Cities in northern Montana remain in the yellow zone on Monday, but southern parts of the state are in the clear. Cities in North Dakota and South Dakota are primarily in the orange and yellow zones.

 

There are currently 146 wildfires spreading across Canada, and the Canadian government on Friday said that drought conditions “are expected to persist in high-risk regions in May.” This increases the “risk and intensity of both natural and human-caused wildfires.”

 

Dozens of fires in Alberta and British Columbia, which could affect Americans, are labeled "out of control" as of Monday.

Elon Musk wins court battle against Australia

The tech billionaire’s X platform has insisted that Canberra’s order to remove a stabbing video was invalid

 

An Australian Federal Court judge has decided not to extend an order banning Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) platform from displaying a video of a stabbing attack in a church in Sydney.

 

On Monday, Justice Geoffrey Kennett denied an application by the country’s eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, to extend restrictions on the clip, which she had deemed to be “class 1” material relating to high-impact violence. The judge hasn’t yet provided explanations for his ruling.

 

The initial ban on the video, which was imposed by the Federal Court in Melbourne on April 22, expired on Monday.

 

X had refused to comply with the order, which would have made the clip inaccessible to users worldwide. The platform only agreed to block the content in Australia. Musk insisted back then thatone country should not have the power to censor the whole internet. The eSafety commissioner argued that a blanket ban was needed as Australians could still access the video through a VPN.

 

The clip in questionshowed a stabbing that took place during a live-streamed sermon at an Assyrian Christian churchin the suburbs of Sydney on April 15. Four people, including Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, were injured in what the Australian authoritiesdescribed as a “terrorist incident.”The footage of the attack was widely shared online and allegedly prompted heated protests near the crime scene.

 

During the hearing on Friday, lawyer for the eSafety Commissioner, Tim Begbie, argued that the refusal to comply with the order by X amounted to mockery of the Federal Court. “What that says about the authority of the court is pretty striking,” he said.

 

X’s lawyer Bret Walker argued that the platform did not implement the ban on the stabbing video because the commissioner’s initialtake-down notice was invalid and “manifestly inadequate” due to the absence of a detailed description of the reasons for the ban.

 

The social media company believes that “global removal is reasonable when X does it because X wants to do it,but it becomes unreasonable when it is told to do it by the laws of Australia,” Walker told the judge.

 

In late April, Bishop Emmanuel supported Musk during a sermon, saying that he wanted thevideo of the attack against him to remain onlinebecause it is “our God-given right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.”

Is a penis transplant possible?

 

Yes, penis transplants have been performed, but they are not yet routine procedures.

 

The first successful penis transplant took place in South Africa in 2014. The patient was a 21-year-old man whose penis had been amputated after a botched circumcision. Since then, successful transplants occurred in the United States in 2016 and again in South Africa in 2017.

 

In March of 2018, a team of surgeons performed the world’s first penis and scrotum transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This surgery was the first time both a penis and scrotum, along with a portion of an abdominal wall, were transplanted. (Note: The donor’s testes were not transplanted.)

 

The transplant process starts with finding a suitable donor penis, which comes from a deceased man with the consent of family members. It can take some time to find a penis that matches a patient’s blood type, age, and skin tone.

 

Once a match is made, surgery can proceed. The procedure itself is highly complex, as surgeons must connect an intricate network of nerves and blood vessels.

 

Patients may also receive bone marrow infusions from the donor and take medications to lower the risk of their bodies’ rejecting the new organ.

 

Recovery time may take weeks to months. The 2014 South African patient was reported to have urinated and had intercourse five weeks after surgery. He also impregnated his girlfriend the following year.

 

Doctors expected the 2018 penis and scrotum transplant patient to have penile sensation and erectile function about six months after surgery.

 

Some experts recommend psychological evaluations and counseling before penis transplant surgery so that patients will know what to expect.

 

In 2006, a penis transplant in China was physically successful in that the patient’s body accepted the new penis. However, two weeks later, surgeons removed the penis “because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife,” the journal European Urology reported.

 

In the case of the penis and scrotum transplant, surgeons did not transplant the donor’s testes. This was an ethical issue, as sperm produced by the testes could still contain genetic material from the donor.

 

Penile transplantation is still in its infancy, but future procedures are possible. Johns Hopkins is considering its next patients. However, transplants are not yet planned for transgender individuals undergoing gender reassignment surgery at that location.

The media made a big deal out of the fact that a few students got up and walked out when Seinfeld came to the podium. Seinfeld received an honorary degree. It was maybe 25-30 students who left, from what I can tell. There was a little of the "Free Palestine" propaganda slogan shouted. While the media was running with that part of Seinfeld's role in the graduation ceremony, the real story was Seinfeld's speech. The sight of the students walking out on a Jewish speaker was antisemitism on display. What did they hope to accomplish?

As a result, taxes paid on long-term capital gains would reach levels above 50% in some states after accounting for state capital gains taxes. Biden also proposed increasing the corporate income tax rate from 21% to 28% and presented a 25% tax on unrealized capital gains for individuals whose net worth exceeds $100 million. These proposals present two problems.
