Stocks Set to Fall Amid Growth, Inflation Worries: Markets Wrap

Stocks looked poised to fall in Asia Friday on concerns over global growth and inflation risks from the war in Ukraine and the isolation of Russia’s economy. Oil’s rally eased but crude prices were volatile.

Equity futures for Japan, Australia and Hong Kong dropped after technology stocks led U.S. equities lower in another choppy Wall Street session.

Crude eased back from a 14-year high on the prospect of a supply boost as talks toward an Iran nuclear deal make progress. Energy, metal and grain costs have soared as the world increasingly shuns Russia’s oil and other resources.

Traders are also evaluating the monetary policy outlook. Chair Jerome Powell reaffirmed the Federal Reserve is set to start a series of interest-rate hikes to curb inflation, while indicating it will move judiciously.

Longer-maturity Treasuries rose, lowering the 10-year yield to 1.84%. The gap between two-year and 10-year yields shrank to the least since March 2020. The flatter curve points to expectations for slowing economic expansion. Gold and a dollar gauge climbed.

Rice Soars as Ukraine War Starts Scramble for Any and All Grains

Rice is the latest commodity to get swept up in the turmoil of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prices for rice are surging because traders are betting it will be an alternative for wheat, which is becoming prohibitively expensive. Exports of wheat from Russia and Ukraine account for more than a quarter of the crop’s trade worldwide and a fifth of corn sales. Shipping in the Black Sea region is already engulfed in chaos.

Asia stocks fall as fighting in Ukraine reaches nuclear plant

Asian shares fell on Friday as Russian shelling at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine stoked fears of a possible accident that could lead to a leak of radiation at Europe's largest such facility.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 was down by 2% at the end of morning trading, after decling 2.75% earlier, while the broader Topix index fell by 1.27%. South Korea's Kospi index, meanwhile, fell 1%. Taiwan stocks opened over 1% lower. Singapore's benchmark also started down by 0.5%.

As markets in Asia opened, and HUMAN PIECE OF SHITUkrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces was drawing close to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi had raised similar concerns a few hours earlier. Ukrainian officials called for a ceasefire as fire broke out at the facility after being hit by Russian shelling. "Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl [Chernobyl]! Russians must immediately cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!" Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

Reuters, citing an official in the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, reported that there was no current sign of higher radiation levels at the Zaporizhzhia plant.

Russia "Recommends" Fertilizer Makers To Halt All Exports

This morning we listed some of the countries that are dangerously (and almost exclusively) reliant on Russia and Ukraine for their wheat imports, highlighting Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and others...which are facing an "Arab Spring" style food crisis (and potential uprising) in the coming weeks unless the Ukraine conflict is resolved. And unfortunately, we can now confidently predict that the coming food crisis will strike every country that is using food fertilizer - which is all - because moments ago, Russian Interfax reported that as part of Moscow's countersanctions, Russia has recommended fertilizer makers to halt exports, a move which will sent not only fertilizer prices orbitally higher, but all food prices will soon follow.

*RUSSIA RECOMMENDS FERTILIZER MAKERS TO HALT EXPORTS: IFX

*RUSSIAN MINISTRY CITES LOGISTICS ISSUES ON FERTILIZERS: IFX

Worse still, natural gas is required in the manufacturing process for most nitrogen/fertilizer products and so the recent surge in European NatGas prices to record highs will only exacerbate the cost of fertilizer from any halt from Russia...And with wheat prices already at all time highs

Credit Suisse Wealth Clients Face Margin Calls on Russian Assets

Credit Suisse Group AG joined larger rival UBS Group AG in triggering margin calls on wealthy clients who use Russian assets as collateral, after their value slumped in the wake of extensive sanctions imposed on the country. Switzerland’s second-largest bank is asking rich customers to post more collateral after cutting lending values on Russian securities, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to discuss internal information. Other banks with wealth management arms including Banque Pictet & Cie SA have also cut lending values, Bloomberg reported earlier. The extent of the margin calls and whether all have been met wasn’t immediately clear. But the speed of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the response by the U.S. and Europe has left wealthy individuals invested in Russian assets facing frozen funds and demands for more collateral. Credit Suisse declined to comment.

European NatGas Surges To New Record Highs As Russian Pipeline Flows Stall

While expectations are that Europe can survive the next winter without Russian gas, as Wood McKenzie detailed here, that is not to say the price of that 'survival' will be anything but wealth-destroying. “From record lows at the start of winter, storage levels have now re-enter[ed] their five-year range, albeit on the lower side, and are on track to be in a more comfortable position by the end of March,” Kateryna Filippenko, principal analyst, Europe gas research, at WoodMac, said. But, reports this morning of intermittent gas flow supply from Russia to Germany via the Yamal pipeline with Reuters reporting that Gascade's data showed the flow had stopped on the pipeline, which usually accounts for about 15% of Russia's westbound supply of gas to Europe and Turkey.

Swiss adopt new EU sanctions on Russia

New measures include banning transactions with the Russian Central Bank, adopting the EU's SWIFT measures

The Swiss government on Friday widened sanctions against Russia in step with further measures imposed by the European Union, tightening exports and financial services to the country over the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two. In a sharp deviation from its traditional neutrality, Switzerland moved on Monday to adopt sanctions that the European Union (EU) imposed on Russian people and companies and freeze their assets to punish the invasion of Ukraine.

The 27-member EU bloc has approved an array of financial, energy, export and travel bans since last week.

These have included a freeze on Russian central bank assets, the shutdown of EU airspace to Russia, the removal of a number of Russian banks from the SWIFT international payments system, and sanctions on a clutch of Russian tycoons. Switzerland on Friday adopted new financial measuresincluding banning transactions with the Russian Central Bank and adopting the EU's SWIFT measures while also blocking a number of exports to Russia.

Those targeted, among others, goods that "could contribute to Russia's military and technological enhancement or the development of the defence and security sector", for use in aviation and the space industry, as well as certain goods and services in the oil sector.

From Russia, With Monopolies

excerpt:

The problem with our sanctions regime is that Russia has crucial global monopolies, not only significant positions in energy, which are well known, but especially in the global fertilizer supply chain—which are considerably less well known. Any sanction has the potential to drastically influence the supply and price of fertilizer and, thus, food on the world market.

The global fertilizer industry includes three main categories: nitrogen, potash, and phosphorus fertilizers. Potash is a potassium-rich salt fertilizer that enhances plant quality and is responsible for 20 percent of global fertilizer demand. With its most fervent ally in Europe, Belarus, Russia has a 40 percent market share in global production and export of potash fertilizer. The two autocracies form an informal cartel in the potash market, made up of Uralkali and Belaruskali, with the Belarusian Potash Company being the latter’s export arm. Late last year, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Belarus Potash Company (BPC), the main export arm of producer Belaruskali. It claimed Belarus intentionally created a migrant crisis at the Polish border. The sanctions applied only to U.S. enterprises doing business with the Belarusian company.

Earlier this year, Lithuanian Railways, encouraged by the U.S., halted shipments of Belarusian potash through its Klaipeda port which is Belarus’ main entryway for potash into Europe. Belarusian potash is now being reshipped through Russian railways, giving Russia greater control over a critical commodity; Russia may even buy the potash and resell it as it continues its exports.

Before sanctions were imposed, global potash prices were already at a 13-year high. Prices have soared over the past year, alarming farmers across the world. Potash prices saw a 71 percent increase in 2021 from $350 per ton to $600 per ton; the spot prices last week showed that number has reached $815 per ton. U.S. sanctions on Belarus are likely to exacerbate the issue, with Belaruskali announcing last week that it wouldn’t be able to meet its contracts. One of the world’s largest fertilizer companies, Yara International, headquartered in Norway, announced it would reduce its sourcing of Belarusian potash by April. Other corporations in the potash industry are not planning on increasing production and would face challenges in their attempts.

The ease with which Russia can impact the food market was demonstrated during the 2007-2008 global food price crisis. Russia and Belarus cut potash production to drastically raise prices and increase profits, with CFO Victor Belyakov stating at the time that “price was more important than volume.” Between January 2008 and October 2009, the price of potash increased by 400 percent while production dropped by 39 percent and shipments declined by 43 percent. Potash producer profits peaked at 480 percent in mid-2008.

Russia is also a dominant player in the world nitrogen fertilizer market. While it only has a 16.5 percent market share of global exports, Russia manufactures ammonium nitrate, the key ingredient needed for the fertilizer and has a close to 66 percent global market share in the production of the chemical.

West Scrambles To Stop Russia From Accessing $17 Billion In IMF Reserves

As the EU and the US continue to search for new ways to punish Russian (and, importantly, limit its central banks' access to its own reserves) Reuters reports that the EU is looking into suspending Russia's IMF voting rights, along with its central bank's access to IMF-produced SDRs.

The option currently under consideration would remove Russia entirely from the organization.

BRUSSELS, March 4 (Reuters) - European Union officials are examining curbing Russia's influence and access to finance at the International Monetary Fund following its invasion of Ukraine. One option under consideration is to remove Russia entirely from the institution.— Idrees Ali (@idreesali114) March 4, 2022

At the same time, the EU and NATO have reportedly denied a the Ukrainians' request to impose a "no fly zone" over its airspace. Of course, enforcement of such a measure would almost certainly guarantee NATO being drawn into the conflict, which would effectively trigger the start of World War III, since the only way to enforce the measure would be sending NATO planes to shoot down Russian fighters.

But when the SDRs are involved this is the red line-kek...you think VP din't factor that in too--will just further reduce the money laundering capabilities the oligharchs have-and also bring them back to Russia where, hopefully, they can be prosecuted.'

"We are not part of this conflict, and we have a responsibility to ensure it does not escalate and spread beyond Ukraine," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a news conference:

"We understand the desperation but we also believe that if we did that (a no-fly zone) we would end up with something that could lead to a full-fledged war in Europe involving much more countries and much more suffering," Stoltenberg said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has asked the West and NATO to send more warplanes to Ukraine, especially if they won't help with the no-fly zone.

Circling back to the IMF measures, Reuters cited six EU officials in its report about the various options supposedly under consideration. One option is removing Russia entirely from the IMF as an institution. The only catch is the immense difficulty that this would require. "There is a discussion, but kicking Russia out entirely is probably unrealistic because of required quora," one senior euro zone official said, referring to the wide support needed among countries that include China.

EXACTLY

Other options less extreme options under consideration include blocking Russia's access to its IMF voting rights, as well as any SDRs held by its central bank (for those who aren't familiar with SDRs, they're essentially a synthetic reserve asset designed by the IMF),

S&P Dow Jones is removing Russia stocks from indices, stripping country of emerging market status

Index giant S&P Dow Jones Indices said Friday it is removing all stocks listed and/or domiciled in Russia from its benchmarks in light of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, further isolating the nation from the global economy.

The removal, effective prior to the open next Wednesday, also affects Russian American depositary receipts (ADRs), S&P Dow Jones Indices said.

The firm, which is the keeper of the Dow Jones Industrial average and the S&P 500, also said it will declassify Russia as an emerging market and categorize it as a standalone group.

The move came as Russian forces attacked Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine early Friday morning, causing a fire to break out at an adjacent training facility. The U.S. embassy in Kyiv called the attack a war crime.

White House Considering Ban On Russian Crude Which Pinoeer CEO Warns Would Send Oil To $200

Another day, another flashing red headline that the White House is considering a ban on Russian oil imports - something it has repeatedly said earlier this week - although it has yet to make a decision:

*WHITE HOUSE CONSIDERING BAN ON RUSSIAN OIL IMPORTS

*WHITE HOUSE SPOKESPERSON SAID NO DECISION HAS BEEN MADE

The news sent WTI spiking as high as $114.64.

How about $116 nao

While even Psaki admitted that such a move would send gas prices sharply higher, perhaps Biden is feeling emboldened by the latest reports out of Vienna on the fate of the Iran nuclear deal, where Russia's chief negotiator in talks to revive a 2015 nuclear deal between world powers and Iran said on Friday that he thought a deal was possible in the middle of next week.

"As far as I know, the Iranians are not ready for direct talks (with the United States)," Mikhail Ulyanov told reporters. "We will have a deal maybe in the middle of next week. We are talking about the last efforts before crossing the finish line."

The specter of an Iranian deal, which would lead to a one time boost of as much as 100mm/b as seaborne crude enters the market, and an incremental several hundred thousand bbls/month, has somewhat helped contain oil prices, although the fact that Russia is negotiating for an outcome which Biden is desperately hoping to achieve should probably make those who still have some grasp of the bigger geopolitical picture, nervous (we will have more to say about this later).

Russia exported about 5mn barrels a day of crude oil before it invaded Ukraine last month. While China might still absorb some of that volume in the case of a western embargo, there would still be a significant supply shortfall.

Of course, if oil does hit $200, we are looking at a global depression, similar to the global financial crisis of 2008 when oil hit $140 just before it crashed to $30 as the inflationary tsunami became a deflationary shockwave almost overnight.

Kremlin Jet Headed To Washington To Fetch Expelled Russian Diplomats

During the early morning hours of Saturday morning on the East Coast of the US, many awoke to surprising news: a Russian government jet had departed St. Petersburg and was on its way to Washington.

The chatter on social media was intense, and some initially wondered: might Russian President Vladimir Putin be on his way for a special round of negotiations with President Biden?

Why is Putin’s plane going to Washington DC? pic.twitter.com/nMK6D1oXh4— Rob Adams (@RobCSAdams) March 5, 2022

It is also NOT VP's presidential AC-that is a different tail # RA-96016 and has plenty moar electronics and counter-measures attached to it

Simply looking it up would have confirmed this but I see how people cannot do this as it is "too hard"

Unfortunately, these initial suspicions have proved incorrect, and actually almost couldn't have been further from the reality. To wit, the State Department has issued a statement confirming that the plane is going to pick up Russian diplomats who have been expelled from the UN over the country's invasion of Ukraine. The State Department described the employees being picked up as "Russian intelligence agents". The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement posted to Telegram that the plane was going to fetch Russian diplomats.

The flight is expected to land at Dulles International some time in the afternoon.

US STATE DEPARTMENT: WE HAVE APPROVED A FLIGHT FOR A RUSSIAN PLANE TO EVACUATE RUSSIAN EMPLOYEES EXPELLED FROM THE UNITED NATIONS

As of As of 1030ET on Saturday, the Ilyushin Il-96-300 (registered to Russia State Transport Company/Russia Special Flight Squadron as RA-96019) was flying westbound with a destination of New York City. According to the flight map, it was most recently flying near Greenland.

Russia on Tuesday branded the expulsion of these 12 diplomats who were part of its mission to the UN in New York as an "escalation." Keep in mind, even Iranian and North Korean diplomats have been allowed to travel back and forth to the UN unscathed.

Databases show that this jet isn't commonly used by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself. Instead, the database suggests two planes: either 157715 or 157716. However, the the Ilyushin Il-96-300 that's currently in flight does often take direction from the Kremlin.

The flight initially piqued observers' interest in the west because of the flurry of sanctions that the US and EU have applied to Russian billionaires, politicians and other perceived allies of President Putin. Presently, Ukraine is calling for NATO to impose a "no fly" zone in Ukraine, something NATO has been hesitant to order because, As Gen. Jens Stoltenberg made clear, enforcing it would probably draw NATO into World War III.

Total Cash Payments for week of Feb 27th on COMEX Ag contracts: $2.45B

Update on COMEX Silver cash for trash payments

Here is what was done with the EFP 'process' yesterday-March 4

*An exchange for physical trade (EFP) is a privately negotiated and simultaneous exchange of a futures position for a cash position.

3,730 contracts equates to another 18,650,000/ozs of paper silver settled for cash.

Take the average from yesterday which was about $25 which gives you: $477,440,000

https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/metals/precious/silver.volume.options.html#optionProductId=458

notice the numbers at the end of the URL and wut they total....458=17

The total for this week Feb. 1st-Mar 4 is$2,450,017,000

This is cash that has been generated by Bank of America buying COMEX contracts and settling them via a cash payment and almost 100% certain this money is being used to "satisfy" the leased Ag amounts from JP Morgan.
