Oil Jumps Over 7% as Russia Isolation Triggers Shortfall Fears

Oil soared at the open as energy and commodity markets were thrown into a state of disarray after Western nations unleashed more sanctions to isolate Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

West Texas Intermediate and Brent rose more than 7% in early Asian trading. The U.S. and its European allies agreed over the weekend to exclude some Russian banks from the SWIFT messaging system and target the central bank’s international reserves. BP Plc also moved to dump its shares in Rosneft PJSC, taking a financial hit of as much as $25 billion. Commodity and financial markets are bracing for further turmoil from the growing fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the West’s response via sanctions. Both WTI and Brent topped $100 a barrel last week before retreating after the U.S. reiterated its decision not to sanction Russian energy exports.

Worldwide oil output is already struggling to meet the rebound in consumption fueled by the reopening of economies, and any disruptions to Russian flows will only exacerbate this. Separately, production outages in Iraq added to concerns of already-tight supplies, with OPEC+ expected to stick to its plan of only gradually increasing supply when it meets this week. The surprise move by BP is the latest sign of how far Western powers are willing to go to punish President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine. The oil major has been in Russia for three decades and just weeks ago was staunchly defending its presence there. Societe Generale SA and Credit Suisse Group AG stopped financing commodities trading from Russia, according to people familiar with the matter. The two banks, key financiers to commodity trade houses, are no longer providing the money needed to move raw materials such as metals and oil from Russia, said the people, who asked not to be named because the information is private.

OPEC+ will probably stick to its plan of only gradually increasing oil production when it meets this week to decide on targets for April, according to several delegates. Last week’s jump in prices did not reflect an imbalance between supply and demand, and the alliance should continue adding 400,000 barrels a day to the market each month.

The U.K. would support Group of Seven nations setting limits on the amount of Russian oil and gas its members could import “over time,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, in a potential escalation of the impact of the war in Ukraine on energy markets. Russia’s military “is funded by revenues from oil and gas, so what we have to do is reduce dependency on oil and gas,” Truss told Sky News on Sunday.

Gold Surges as Ukraine Conflict, Western Sanctions Boosts Haven

Gold rallied more than 2% after Western nations ramped up sanctions on Russia in response to its assault on Ukraine, spurring demand for the haven asset.

A decision to penalize Russia’s central bank and exclude some Russian banks from the SWIFT messaging system, used for trillions of dollars worth of transactions around the world, was announced Saturday in a joint statement by the U.S., European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, U.K. and Canada.

The agreement also includes measures to prevent Russia’s central bank from deploying its international reserves to undermine sanctions. The Bank of Russia said it will start buying gold again, nearly two years after it ended a long run of purchases.

Bullion is heading for the biggest monthly gain since May as the latest developments in Ukraine cast a pall over markets. Apart from its haven asset role, gold is also a hedge against inflation, which could be stoked further by the surging prices of wheat, energy and metals.

Spot gold rose as much 2.2% to $1,930.85 an ounce, before trading at $1,920.86 at 7:10 a.m. Singapore time. Palladium climbed as much as 7.8% on concerns over potential supply disruptions. Russia produces about 40% of the palladium mined globally. Silver and platinum rose more than 1%.

All RC-135U aircraft are equipped with an aerial refueling system, giving it an unlimited flying range. Communication equipment includes high frequency, very high frequency, and ultra high frequency radios. The navigation equipment incorporates ground navigation radar, a solid state Doppler system, and an inertial navigation system that merges celestial observations and Global Positioning System data. Although the flight crew stations are similarly configured, the reconnaissance equipment is slightly unique within each airframe. The aircraft are identified by their distinctive antennae arrays on the "chin" and wing tips, large cheek fairings, and extended tail. Crew composition includes two pilots, one navigator, two airborne systems engineers, and a minimum of 10 electronic warfare officers, or "Ravens," and six or more electronic, technical, and area specialists.

Stocks Tied To China's SWIFT Alternative Are Soaring

As the Western world still obsesses with how Russia's expulsion from SWIFT will impact the Russian economy, commodity prices and the global funding markets, a quick note on how forward looking markets are reacting.

While we wait for US cash markets to open (as futures reverse a modest bounce and trade at session lows), China's micromanaged "market" is already up and running in what so far appears a boring session where the SHCOMP is flat, but where shares tied to China’s Cross-Border Inter-Bank Payments System (CIPS) are surging after Saturday's decision by Western nations to exclude some Russian lenders from the SWIFT messaging system. Why? Because of what Bloomberg notes is growing speculation that China's CIPS could become an alternative for those banks.

What is CIPS? It is a payment system which offers clearing and settlement services for its participants in cross-border yuan trades. Indeed, it is a Chinese version of SWIFT, and one which most Russian banks will likely soon be forced to adopt. As a result, stocks such as Orient Group, and HyUnion Holding jump by the 10% daily limit.. And since China will quickly brush off any threats of sanctions if it were to accept Russia banks into its orbit, it is now clear that instead of driving a wedge between Russia and the country that is true the biggest US challenger on the global scene, China, the West has succeeded into bringing the two powers even closer together while putting the fate of the world's reserve currency in jeopardy, as Dylan Grice explained earlier...

Energy Firms Snap Up Russian Gas as Europe Seeks Alternatives

Bloomberg February 27, 2022

By Elena Mazneva, Feb 27, 2022,(Bloomberg) –European leaders talking up plans to wean the continent off Russian natural gas are facing a harsh reality: energy companies are buying more as the war rages in Ukraine.

Russian shipments through pipelines crossing Ukraine have surged to near the maximum level allowed under the transit contract, while some gas has started to flow again into Germany via a key pipeline running through Belarus and Poland. The increase in purchases comes as European politicians are discussing how to retool energy policy in the wake of Russia’s invasion.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged new support for liquefied natural gas terminals just days after shelving the $11 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline to bring Russian supplies to Europe. Italy said it could reopen some shuttered coal plants and is also considering importing more LNG from the U.S., and gas from Azerbaijan, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya via existing pipelines.

“The events of the last few days and weeks have shown us that a responsible, forward-looking energy policy is not only crucial for our economy and our climate. But also crucial for our security,” Scholz told the parliament in Berlin on Sunday. “We will change course in order to overcome our import dependency on individual energy suppliers.”

Realted Article: Russia Ready to Re-Route Energy Flows If Hit By New Sanctions

Western nations are ratcheting up pressure on Moscow, agreeing to impose new sanctions to further isolate Russia’s economy and its financial system after initial penalties failed to persuade President Vladimir Putin to withdraw forces from Ukraine. But the decision to penalize Russia’s central bank and exclude some lenders from the SWIFT messaging system — used for trillions of dollars worth of transactions around the world — excludes energy.

Political Decision

While some electricity producers have started to halt purchases of a few Russian commodities for their power plants in a largely symbolic move, new orders for gas show no signs of abating. Orsted AS, the world’s top offshore wind developer, said on Sunday it had stopped buying Russian coal and biomass for its power stations. It’s also stopped signing any new contracts with Russian firms, but when it comes to gas, Orsted said any decision needs to be made by the European Union at the political level.

“Shortfalls in gas supplies will, as opposed to stopping supply of other types of products, have severe human and societal consequences and therefore need to be coordinated at EU and national levels rather than decided by individual companies,” Mads Nipper, Chief Executive Officer of Denmark’s Orsted AS, said Sunday. “Therefore, the dependency on Russian gas and any ban on import of gas from Russia need to be decided and enforced by clear political sanctions.”

Realted Article: BP Abandons $25B In Russian Oil Retreat

European Union energy ministers are meeting on Monday to discuss the bloc’s energy security. There are concerns sanctions could impact the flow of gas to Europe, or that Russia could decide to cut shipments in retaliation.

Russian gas orders started to surge the very same day of invasion. Europe’s top energy companies rushed to buy because there were concerns supplies would get disrupted. But more importantly, the 62% rally that day meant Russian fuel under long-term contracts became cheaper than buying at European hubs, according to BloombergNEF and BCS Global Markets analysts.

Volumes of gas crossing Ukraine remain high after hitting the limit in Russia’s gas-transit contract of almost 109.6 million cubic meters per day on Friday, while some extra supplies were sent to Germany overnight on Friday and Saturday via the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which had been halted for more than two months. Gazprom PJSC had previously justified the absence of flows by saying there had been no requests from European buyers.

LNG Terminals

Politicians are concerned about Europe’s deep dependency on Russian energy. Germany, which relies on Russia for more than 50% of its gas, said it would move “quickly” to build two LNG terminals. Berlin is also set to create reserves of coal for power-plant operators, and is planning to force energy companies to store gas before the winter to ensure security of supply.

Italy said it will work to streamline the approval process for new green energy sites. The country is also preparing “exceptional” measures to boost the incentive to store gas given potential risks to supplies, a move that comes on top of national storage requirements. Poland has called for shutting down the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany, which runs parallel to the second link currently shelved.

These aircraft were based at Kirtland Air Force Base. Work was initiated in 1963 and the aircraft remained in service with Sandia until 1976, flying principally for Sandia, the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.[1] The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) maintained controlling oversight of the NC-135 flight test aircraft. After 1976, the aircraft flew for Air Force Weapons Laboratory.

Morning Market Report

About what I expected

Markets down but all very orderly-no panic at all.

DOW is just about at the lowest point (and bounced off of it) from it's Futures drop last night

They have a real problem here....kek

Can't decimate it cause they then begin to eat themselves via margin calls and the PPT looks utterly useless- but can still be effective (see Friday) when all it is are HFT's going back and forth.

Most people have never seen capitulation-I've only ever seen it twice-1987 and partially in 2008 but even that was all way too orderly-there were days when they "gave it up" but quickly took it right back.

Last week was nuffin considering what is going to habben-exits get shut off..and not for minutes cause at some point they will all get caught and have no one to unload to-see Lehman Brothers in 2008-but will be spread across all of them

Metals

Au not broken above last nights initial spike but gettin ready for a move with the indecision (prolly some breakthrough "news item" coming)

Ag same and will have moar on that later as the Delivery month is upon us (it actually began on friday) even though it still Feb.

Have to sift through the COMEX report to see what they did on friday-suspect they made a token effort to make it look like they delivered a portion of it.

Oil is same-waiting game as the initial spike up last night is farting around-OPEC+ will increase production but prolly only by a token amount -cause they need to get the next pile of Aramco out the door while the price is still in to 90's.

It is in the process of filling that gap from last night

Toyota halts operations at all Japan plants due to cyberattack

Subsidiaries Hino and Daihatsu will also suspend production.

Toyota Motor announced Monday that it will halt operations at all of its plants in Japan on Tuesday, as a major supplier was hit by a suspected cyberattack, disrupting the automaker's parts supply management system.

The company will suspend 28 lines at 14 plants. Toyota subsidiaries Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor will also halt operations at some plants in Japan on Tuesday. The announcement confirmed an earlier Nikkei report. The automakers are still determining whether they will be able to return to normal operations after Wednesday. The shutdown on Tuesday will affect production of around 13,000 vehicles, or 4% to 5% of Toyota's monthly output in Japan. "We apologize to our relevant suppliers and customers for any inconvenience this may cause," Toyota said.

The cyberattack hit Kojima Industries, which supplies plastic parts to Toyota. An official close to Kojima Industries told Nikkei: "It is true that we have been hit by some kind of cyberattack. We are still confirming the damage and we are hurrying to respond, with the top priority of resuming Toyota's production system as soon as possible." The company said it is still investigating the origin of the cyberattack, the specific malware involved and the damage caused. "Toyota representatives and cybersecurity experts are at Kojima Industries to determine the cause and how to restore" the system, a source familiar with the situation said.

Many of the roughly 400 tier 1 suppliers that Toyota deals with directly are connected to the automaker's kanban just-in-time production control system, which allowed the problems at Kojima Industries to spill over to Toyota. The automaker halted production to prevent longer-term damage, and prioritized inspection and recovery of the system. Hino will suspend all operations at its Koga facility, which manufactures large and midsize trucks for export and domestic sale, and its Hamura plant, which makes small trucks and handles production for Toyota. The automaker has yet to determine whether work will resume Wednesday. The Toyota shutdown includes a Daihatsu plant in Kyoto Prefecture. The halt is expected to reduce output by a few hundred vehicles. "We are aware of media reports" on the incident, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters Monday night. "The government is working to confirm the situation." Law enforcement is also looking into the matter.

Biden Dispatches Former Top Defense Officials To Taiwan After China Said "It's Not Ukraine"

Likely barely struggling to handle one rapidly developing crisis in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Biden administration could be stepping into another as it will dispatch a high level US delegation to Taiwan on Monday in a "gesture of support" - as one senior official quoted in Reuters put it.

The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the Bush and Obama presidencies, Mike Mullen, will head up the team - and will be accompanied by former deputy national security advisors under Bush Michele Flournoy and Meghan O’Sullivan. The additional two officials are former senior National Security Council directors for Asia Evan Medeiros and Mike Green will also be on the trip.

"This is to demonstrate our support for Taiwan," a Biden official told Reuters. Additionally Taiwan recently revealed that Trump's former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Taipei in the first week of March, which is not connected with the official Biden delegation; instead, Pompeo is said to be visiting as a "private citizen" - though still without doubt it will be taken as provocative by Beijing.

They are expected to arrive in Taiwan Tuesday afternoon, and will stay there until Wednesday night. During this time, they intend to meet Taiwan President TsaiIng-wen and Defense Minister Chiukuo-cheng, as well as other high-ranking officials.

According to the official, it was not possible for him to confirm whether Russia had influenced his visit due the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Taiwan stated last week that Mike Pompeo, former Secretary of State to the U.S., will visit Taiwan between March 2-5, and meet Tsai.

A White House official was quoted as describing that the five selected officials represent "an important signal about U.S. bipartisan commitment to Taiwan democracy and peace, and it demonstrates how the Biden administration remains committed to Taiwan in a larger sense."

This seems a bit glowy....

Anonymous hacker group targets Russian state media

February 28, 2022

Hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility on Monday for disrupting the work of websites of pro-Kremlin Russian media in protest of the invasion of Ukraine.

The group targeted the websites of state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti, as well as taking over websites of newspapers Kommersant and Izvestiya and Forbes Russia magazine.

It posted messages appealing to Russians to try to stop the war and not participate as fighters.

“In a few years we’ll live like in North Korea. What’s in it for us? For Putin to make the history books? It isn’t our war, let’s end it!”, said a message in Russian posted on Forbes Russia’s site.

“This message will be deleted and some of us will be sacked and even jailed. But we can’t stand this any longer,” said the writer, signing off as “concerned journalists of Russia”.

The latest cyberattacks come after Thursday’s hacking of RT state-funded television channel.

They also follow the downing over the weekend of the websites of the Kremlin, the defence ministry and the Duma lower house of parliament, claimed by Anonymous on Twitter.

The sites have faced a barrage of denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.

Web monitoring group NetBlocks said in a report on Saturday that Russians were experiencing delays in accessing the websites of the main phone and mobile phone operators, Rostelecom, MTS, Beeline and Megafon.

Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, said on Saturday that the country needed IT recruits.

“We are creating an IT army. We need digital talents. All operational tasks will be given here,” he tweeted.

NYSE, Nasdaq halt trading in stocks of Russia-based companies

Nasdaq Inc (NDAQ.O) and Intercontinental Exchange Inc's (ICE.N) NYSE have temporarily halted the trading in stocks of Russia-based companies listed on their exchanges, their websites showed. The halts were due to regulatory concerns as the exchanges seek more information following economic sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, said people familiar with the matter.

The Nasdaq-listed stocks halted were Nexters Inc , HeadHunterGroup PLC(HHR.O), Ozon Holdings PLC (OZON.O), Qiwi PLC(QIWI.O), and Yandex(YNDX.O). The NYSE-listed stocks halted were Cian PLC (CIAN.N), Mechel PAO and Mobile TeleSystems PAO .

Separately, OTC Markets Group (OTCM.PK), which provides price information for almost 10,000 over-the-counter securities, said it was seeking regulatory information regarding the sanctions on Russia and their impact on the trading of Russian American depository receipts. "OTC Markets Group is monitoring and working with Federal regulators and will act in accordance with their guidance and directives as information becomes available," the New York-based company said in an emailed statement.

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, an industry-owned organization that processes nearly all U.S. securities transactions, also said it was assessing the potential impact of the Russia sanctions on the financial system and volatility. "We are closely watching the situation in Ukraine and are committed to protecting market stability and providing certainty to our clients and the broader industry," a spokesperson for the group said.

DTCC too-well they are fuggen irrelevant since they don't do the simple job they have namely clearing trades but I'm sure they will be all over this.

Russia hikes rates, introduces capital controls as sanctions bite

Russia’s central bank more than doubled its key policy rate on Monday and introduced some capital controls as the country faced deepening economic isolation, but its governor said sanctions had stopped it selling foreign currency to prop up the rouble.

The admission that restrictions had effectively tied the Bank of Russia’s hands underscores the ferocity of the backlash to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and Western allies’ success in restricting its ability to deploy some $640 billion of foreign exchange and gold reserves. “The central bank today increased its key rate to 20% as new sanctions triggered a significant deviation of the rouble rate and limited the central bank’s options to use its gold and foreign exchange reserves,” Governor Elvira Nabiullina told a news conference. “We had to increase rates to compensate citizens for increased inflationary risks.”

Western sanctions had earlier sent the rouble tumbling nearly 30% to record lows. It clawed back some ground after the central bank raised its main interest rate to 20%, the highest level this century, from 9.5%. The Bank of Russia sold $1 billion on foreign exchange markets on Thursday, Nabiullina said, but did not intervene on Monday. That suggests the rouble was supported by other unnamed market participants. China

On Monday, the central bank and the finance ministry ordered exporting companies, which include some of the world’s biggest energy producers from Gazprom to Rosneft, to sell 80% of their forex revenues on the market, as the central bank’s own ability to intervene on currency markets was curbed. The central bank temporarily banned Russian brokers from selling securities held by foreigners, although it did not specify which assets the ban applies to. It also said it would resume buying gold on the domestic market.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a ban on foreign exchange loans and bank transfers by Russian residents to outside of Russia from March 1, the Kremlin said on Monday, in retaliation for economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West.

The United States and Britain banned their citizens or entities from transacting with the central bank, Russia’s National Wealth Fund or the Russian finance ministry.

Switzerland said it would adopt European Union sanctions against Russians involved in the invasion of Ukraine and freeze their assets, in a major departure from the neutral country’s traditions.

Maersk considers suspending shipping container deliveries to, from Russia

Danish shipping company Maersk announced Monday that it is considering suspending container deliveries to and from Russia in an effort to comply with widespread sanctions against the country for its invasion of Ukraine. "In light of the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, we at A.P. Moller - Maersk are closely monitoring and preparing to comply with the ever-evolving sanctions and restrictions imposed against Russia while we safeguard our operations and our people in consideration of the constant developing situation," the company said in a statement. "Our preparations include a possible suspension of Maersk bookings to and from Russia on ocean and inland." The company said it would do its "utmost" to deliver cargo already on the water to its intended destination.

"We have a sharp focus on safeguarding reefer containers and keeping cold chain operations as stable as possible, as the commodities include important goods such as groceries and pharmaceuticals," the statement continued. "We are doing everything possible to prevent risk to the above cargo and in turn risk to the end-users in need of these commodities."

In addition, the company noted that its air services would be affected due to growing airspace restrictions against Russia.

The move comes after Maersk announced on Friday that it would stop accepting shipping container bookings to and from Ukraine until further notice. Maersk has been active in Russia since 1992, connecting the country's ports of St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Vladivostok, Vostochny and Kaliningrad to key global markets.

Maersk shares slipped over 3% on Monday following the latest announcement.

Some additional information on COMEX and the Silver trade

As mentioned they already started "delivery" * on friday as they usually do not wait for the entire month (but they can).

*you have to actually believe these numbers ( I don't and never have) but am putting in for the sake of showing what they are trying to show.

It looks like the system managed to take off 7,441 contracts or 37,205,000/ozs of paper silver

But the interdasting part is the column marked EFP and that means Exchange of a Futures Positoin for Cash-privately negotiated.

The CFTC did this themselves in the last run up after the 2008 arket event so they are obviously facilitating this as it is against the rules of the CFTC to do this on own.

They managed to do that with 200 contracts or 1,000,000/ozs so someone is actively paying off contract holders to NOT stand for physical deliver-200 contracts are nothing (when you allow this type of thievery to occur on a daily level-they did not implement position limits which would have helped to try and solve it but they would get around it in another way) but worth noting that this will only increase and I can see that some additional payoffs have habbened for the May contract-even moar at 275 and volume is already at 67,322

I have not watched this for many years so could be wrongly interpreting these exchange for cash positions but will continue to watch to see what develops.

one moar note on this EFP thang.

If this is Bank of America trying to extricate itself from the physical portion of the Ag they 'leased' from JP Morgan-meaning they already know they don't have it and CAN'T get it to deliver-they will have to do this EFP about 75 moar times.

IF I am correct in muh interpretation..that still a big IF

So, in essence, you have a default on the COMEX in development and they are up to the usual tricks trying to cover up a public declaration of a default-which will SHUT IT DOWN.

It should have habbened in 2008-2012 but they used this trick to pay off those who tried to stand for delivery.

the problem I see with that is the central banks own the bulk of it (because they still settle sovereign transactions this way out of public view-the debt/notes is just the show)

How do you get away from that when they will also introduce the FedCoin/CBDC which they will want to tie to the only real asset they have left.

This doesn't count the shit pile of derivatives they will tokenize along with it.

The gold-backed system in the way it needs to be done predicates that they have been removed from control.

It also needs to be tied to production-a key point- and a few other commodities that can be valued fairly with blockchain tech

U.S. SEC investigates Citi over unapproved employee communications

Citigroup (C.N) became the latest bank to be probed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in an industry-wide enquiry over employees using communication channels not approved by the company, it disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday.

The enquiry, involving some of the largest banks and financial institutions in the United States, was first launched in October by the regulator to assess if the firms were keeping an adequate track of employees' digital communications. The scrutiny highlights the challenges Wall Street institutions have faced in tracking staff communications in the work-from-home pandemic era, particularly over personal devices.

The company said the SEC was investigating Citigroup Global Markets Inc's record-keeping compliance and that it was cooperating with the regulator. The SEC has contacted several companies since last year to check if employees' work-related communications, such as messages and emails, have been properly documented.

Last week, Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) said it was cooperating with the regulatory body and providing the necessary documents required for the investigation. read more

In late 2021, U.S. regulators had fined J.P. Morgan Securities $200 million for "widespread" failures to preserve staff communications on personal mobile devices, messaging apps and emails

and like the other examples it will be settled with a fine and a pee-pee whack and no one will admit nuffin.

EU to urgently link electricity grid with Ukraine's

“That would mean Russia would no longer control technical aspects of Ukraine’s network such as grid frequency. EU officials said the link could be completed within weeks.

Simson said it was possible that Russia could take "retaliatory steps"

Russia supplies around 40% of Europe's gas. EU rules require all member countries to have a plan to respond to gas supply shocks, which they have updated in recent weeks.”

That it hasn't been taken down by Them is actually surprising since they have already blown up an apartment bldg and blamed it's own errant missile on muh russians.

Cause they certainly would be shooting an anti-aircraft weapon at own planes.

But this could be exactly what they want "hook" up to Yerp and then have all of that taken out so you can continue to blame the russians

Would already be down and inoperable if doze "bad" russians were actually doing 95% of what they are being blamed for.
