Poland President Andrzej Duda Signs Law To Levy Embargo On Russian Coal: Reports

Amid the relentless war between Russia and Ukraine, Poland President Andrzej Duda signed a new law imposing an embargo on Russian coal. Amidst the relentless war between Russia and Ukraine, Poland President Andrzej Duda on Friday signed a law imposing an embargo on Russian coal, NEXTA reported. The law reportedly allows for the freezing of the assets of anyone who supports Russian military aggression. Notably, earlier on April 13, Duda alleged that Russia's actions in Ukraine are not a war but "actual terrorism and banditry." He also called for further sanctions against Russia in order to keep it out of the world community.

On April 13, Duda made this statement during a joint briefing with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Estonia Alar Karis, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, and President of Latvia Egils Levits in Kyiv. Duda claimed he observed two sides of the conflict in Ukraine: military clashes between the two armies and Russian troops bombarding civilian establishments. "I told President Zelensky and other Presidents: this is not war, but terrorism. If someone sends planes and soldiers to bomb houses, and kill civilians, it is not a war. It is cruelty, banditry, and terrorism," Duda was quoted as saying by Ukrinform.

Last week, the Polish President also stated that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline with Russia should not only be halted but also "dismantled." He went on to say that Europe's energy reliance on Moscow is harmful. He further remarked that Russia's gas supply is a monopoly on the European market which is "absolutely deadly" for the continent. In a coordinated move with the European Union, Germany has shut the 1,200-kilometre-long pipeline that runs beneath the Baltic Sea near the Russian coast of St Petersburg. The $11 billion (Rs 1100 crores) project was finished in September 2021, with Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy giant, funding half of the costs. It is pertinent to mention here that the Kremlin stated last week that Moscow will redirect coal supplies to alternative markets after the European Union rejected the shipments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov asserted that the coal shipments will be diverted to different markets as Europe refused to consume it. Notably, the European Union members approved the fifth set of sanctions against Russia on April 7.

Catholics mark Good Friday outside Notre-Dame three years after fire

Hundreds of Catholic worshippers gathered for prayer and song outside Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris on Good Friday, three years to the day after its roof was destroyed in a massive blaze.

Notre-Dame has been closed for restoration since the fire in 2019 gutted its roof and sent its spire crashing down, to the horror of the nation and tourist onlookers. A few hundred people gathered on Friday on the Ile de la Cite, in the middle of the river Seine, to listen to a sermon under the shadow of a crane and scaffolding that has cloaked the 12th-century church since the blaze. "We believe that You are here with us, by our side, to return peace to us in the heart of the storm," the cathedral's rector Patrick Chauvet said in the square outside the famous landmark. Chauvet led the service along with Archbishop Georges Pontier, who is temporarily heading the archdiocese of Paris after Michel Aupetit resigned late last year.

President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to reopen the church to worshippers by 2024, when Paris will the Olympic Games. Macron is scheduled to make a short break in his presidential campaign later on Friday to visit the restoration site, while another service is set to take place on the square outside the cathedral on Easter Sunday.

The Titanic sank 110 years ago. Here are some rare photos of the ship and artifacts

It's been 110 years since the Titanic sank into the Atlantic during the ship's maiden voyage. Just four days into its journey from Southampton, England to New York City, the British luxury passenger liner collided with an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland on the night of April 14, 1912. In the early hours of April 15 at approximately 2:20 a.m., the Titanic disappeared completely beneath the ocean.

Over 1,500 people were killed during the tragedy. According to Britannica, the ship's crew and third-class passengers suffered the greatest loss with 700 deaths among the crew and 710 in the third class.

The decades following the sinking of the Titanic have been filled with gripping stories, multiple films and extensive research. To commemorate the anniversary, here are some photos of the famous ship, rare artifacts and news reports from all those years ago.

Vanguard Just Became the Largest Twitter (TWTR) Stock Holder. Here’s Why.

Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) is in full focus today after Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk announced an offer to buy the social media platform for $54.20 per share. Oddly enough, shares of TWTR stock closed the day down 1.7%. This is likely because Musk’s offer may not come to fruition. Currently, Twitter is reportedly weighing a “poison pill” option that may discourage Musk from acquiring the company. A poison pill provision effectively makes an acquisition less attractive by allowing existing shareholders to purchase shares at less than market value. On top of this news, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal — a large shareholder of the company — voiced his disapproval of the acquisition.

Prior to all this Twitter drama, however, one investment firm with over $6.67 trillion in assets under management (AUM) reported increasing its existing TWTR position. Let’s jump into the details. According to an amended 13G filing, Vanguard now owns 82.40 million shares of TWTR stock, which equates to a 10.29% stake. That’s roughly 12 million shares more — or 17% — than when the firm last reported its stake in the company back in early February. Vanguard is now the largest shareholder of TWTR stock, beating out Elon Musk.

The “date of event” on the 13G filing was March 31, meaning Vanguard increased its position sometime in March. Securities regulatory provisions state that any institutional investor who owns more than 10% of a company must file a 13G form “within 10 calendar days reporting the holdings as of the close of the month.” Therefore, the date of event signifies Vanguard’s TWTR holdings as of March 31. In February, Vanguard reported an 8.8% stake, so its most recent purchase pushed it above the 10% threshold.

Vanguard has an average holding period of 38.62 quarters (or nearly 10 years) for the stocks in its portfolio. As a result, investors should expect the firm to keep its shares of Twitter for the long term. However, Vanguard made its purchase before the Musk acquisition offer. Because of that, it will be interesting to see if the firm adjusts its position based on recent news.

Why did Vanguard increase its Twitter stake in the first place? Institutional investors are not required to disclose their reasons behind purchases or sales. Nonetheless, Twitter has experienced major changes this year, such as the departure of former CEO Jack Dorsey. With new CEO Parag Agrawal now on board, it’s likely he will enact different business decisions and goals. Vanguard’s recent purchase may be a stamp of approval for the company’s new leadership.

French AF XNONF Falcon 50 MAWS Maritime Airborne Warfare System off of nw France

This article pertains to the collaboration between the French and Germans so this AC is the result of that program being cancelled

from Dec 2021

The end of the MAWS programme

The Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) programme, launched in 2017 by France and Germany, aimed to replace the German Navy P-3C Orions and the Marine Nationale (French Navy) ATL2 (Atlantique 2) with new aircraft. The programme included a platform, new radars, electronic warfare capabilities, sonobuoys and armaments dedicated to anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. Beyond a simple aircraft, it was a collaborative combat system with a network of sensors (drones, satellites, semaphores). However, the failure of this Franco-German cooperation initiative became evident with Germany's decision last June to acquire five new P-8A Poseidon Maritime patrol Aircraft (MPA). The Poseidons will replace the current P-3C Orions of the German Navy, the modernisation of which was abandoned last winter and which must therefore be withdrawn from service by 2025.

To give the MAWS programme a chance, France offered to provide Germany with four Atlantique 2 upgraded to standard 6 to mitigate the consequences of the P-3C Orions’ withdrawal, with the training of German crews, aircraft maintenance and the prospect of operational cooperation. Germany refused this proposal.

In November 2020, a Franco-German study platform was installed in Thales premises in Vélizy, in the Paris region. This common platform brought together the actors involved (French DGA and German counterpart, military from both countries, companies) around a first study contract notified to the THED consortium, bringing Thales, Hensoldt, ESG and Diehl. This contract, aimed at determining the possible architectures for the future system, ended in October 2021 and should have continued with a new phase devoted to integration on the various platforms envisaged. According to French, Mer et Marine media, the common platform has been dismantled. This decision signals the near end of the Franco-German programme. Is a France only solution possible? France must therefore work again on a national programme to ensure the replacement of its ATL2. The eigteen refurbished Standard 6 aircraft will retire between 2031 and 2035. Two options now seem possible for the French Navy. This summer, Dassault Aviation made a first proposal based on its new Falcon 10X jet. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is also looking at the solution earlier presented by Airbus around the A320neo MPA and continues to seek possible partnerships at the European level to pool costs. No national study has yet been launched at this stage; a political decision being initially awaited. The Falcon 10X, of which the size is ultimately equivalent to that of the ATL2 has a large cabin over 16 meters long, 2,8 meters wide and 2 meters high. It is sufficiently large enough to imagine the integration of a weapon bay. Navy pilots, who have long preferred turboprops for maritime patrol, requiring them to change altitude regularly and to be able to fly very close to the sea (ATL2s can descend up to 100 feet only), gradually learned, with the Falcon 50, to convert to jet engines.-one of these in cap #1

Commodity Margin Calls Pose Macroeconomic Risk, Dallas Fed Says

Commodity markets should be tracked for potential macroeconomic risks, Dallas Federal Reserve analysts said in the latest sign that liquidity concerns in the sector have caught the eye of central banks and regulators. “Ongoing developments in commodities should be monitored for potential impacts on financial conditions broadly,” according to the note from Dallas Fed economists, including Jill Cetina, who leads surveillance and supervisory risk analysis.

The commodities industry has long operated under the radar of regulators (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA), but the clamber to restrict trade with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine is highlighting the role of trading companies as takers of market risk and intermediaries for global consumption. “The threshold for central bank intervention in unregulated markets is high,” the economists said. “It would be prudent for firms active in commodities markets to proactively assess and further strengthen their liquidity profiles.”

The Bloomberg Commodity Spot Index reached a record in March as part of a 32% increase so far this year. Traders are taking steps to minimize the stresses of high and volatile prices: adding billions of dollars in credit, using options markets to hedge against increased margin requirements and reducing exposure to deals. “While so far, commodity trading firms appear to have obtained the credit necessary to continue their intermediation activities, the recent situation highlights some vulnerabilities,” the economists said. “A pullback in credit to a few commodity trading firms could leave remaining ones unable to meet demand for commodity intermediation, potentially creating a negative feedback loop that causes commodity prices to rise further.” Incidents such as the collapse of nickel trading on the London Metal Exchange are “evidence of risk management weakness,” the economists said*.

“A further sharp rise in global commodity prices due to intermediation challenges could weigh heavily on risk assets and increase volatility, leading to an abrupt and significant tightening in financial conditions,” the economists said.

* what he meant to say is that all the big bois are hedged short to protect against the long term production of any tradable commodity and when they have big prices spikes, ala the Nickel parabolic rise, they are forced to cover those shorts and in that case the "regulator" busted all the long trades and the counter-party in that situation was almost half-owned by JP Morgan so they "made a deal" to enact price controls so they don't get caught out again.

Ex-Bank of America Trader Pleads Guilty to Treasury Spoofing

A former trader at Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch unit admitted to manipulating Treasury prices through a spoofing scheme.

Tyler Forbes, 27, pleaded guilty in federal court in Brooklyn Friday to working to rig the prices of Treasuries traded on the secondary market, consisting mostly of two-and-three-year notes, from January to June 2019. Prosecutors said he placed large electronic orders on one side of the market without intending to execute them while at the same time entering smaller orders on the other side in order to raise or lower prices in his favor and increase profits. Many of Forbes’ actual orders were “icebergs” meaning they were only partially visible to the market at any particular time, while his fake orders were fully displayed, according to the government.

Spoofing typically involves flooding derivatives markets with orders that traders don’t intend to execute to trick others into moving prices in a desired direction. While submitting and then canceling orders isn’t illegal, it is unlawful as part of a strategy intended to dupe other traders.

charge them to submit orders and this would stop....

Prosecutors have increasingly focused on the practice since it was specifically prohibited by lawmakers in 2010, and the government has extracted more than $1 billion in fines from companies including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America and Deutsche Bank AG to resolve liability for market manipulation tied to spoofing.

yes and they admitted no wrong-doing and paid a fraction in fines to what they made in profits by at least 25:1

Merrill, whose investment banking and trading divisions were reorganized as BofA Securities Inc. in May 2019, agreed to pay $36.5 million in June of the same year to settle U.S. officials’ claims that its commodities division manipulated the price of precious metals futures over a six-year period. Two former traders at the firm were convicted in August for illegally flooding the market with buy and sell orders they quickly canceled to move gold, silver or platinum prices in the direction they wanted.

Forbes, of Manlius, New York, pleaded guilty to a single count of manipulating Treasury prices, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 28 by U.S. District Court Judge Rachel P. Kovner. While Forbes’ employer wasn’t identified by prosecutors, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records indicate he worked for Merrill Lynch from August 2016 until he was terminated in August 2019 for failing to observe the firm’s trading policy. Forbes, who became responsible for his own trading book at age 24 in late 2018, agreed to pay $75,000 and be suspended from associating with any Finra member in all capacities for 16 months.

Forbes’ lawyers didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Bank of America spokesman Bill Halldin declined to comment.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/ex-bank-of-america-trader-pleads-guilty-to-treasury-spoofing-1.1752745

So what happened here is that this trader had a way outsized bet go the wrong way and then was fired for it-they know this shit goes on all the time and you only hear about this when they lose.

Since the 2s/3syear was in the process of peaking, yield-wise, in Nov 2018-cap cap #2-3 and then yields started dropping-meaning prices started climbing he probably short, over-leveraged and screwed hence he got fired for "not complying with internal rules".

This guy was 24 years old at the time so no fuggen way the Compliance Dept (or what is left of it) did not know about it before this even happened. He did plead guilty so I'd be watching his bank accts for a large deposit....

Sinking yen can be 'bad' for Japan, finance chief says in rare remark

A rapidly weakening yen can cause problems for Japan's economy, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said Friday, as speculation mounts that Tokyo will step in to curb the currency's slide for the first time in more than two decades-see below for how they will likely do it

When the surging cost of materials "can't be sufficiently passed on through higher prices, or wages don't grow enough to make up for them, a weak yen can be considered a bad thing," Suzuki said. He spoke Friday morning, before Japan's currency slid further to as far as the mid-126 range against the U.S. dollar, its weakest since May 2002. This unusual case of a currency official expressing an opinion on exchange rates breaks from the government's typical stance that a soft yen benefits the economy. But while Tokyo becomes concerned about the currency's fast depreciation, its options for making a sustained difference may be limited. Suzuki's comments reflect concern that a weaker yen is amplifying a rise in import prices sparked by the recent commodities rally. The Bank of Japan's producer price index soared 9.5% on the year in March -- only marginally lower than a February reading that was the highest since December 1980, when the economy was still recovering from the previous year's oil crisis. Prices rose for 526 of the 744 items tracked, with higher packaging and transportation costs leading to increases for products that are close to consumers, such as food. This trend has put upward pressure on the consumer price index, which some observers say could grow more than 2% on the year in April after years of mostly minimal movement. Speculation suggests that the government would intervene if the yen hits 130 to the dollar. Tokyo last stepped in to buy yen in exchange for dollars in 1998, when the Asian currency crisis and a string of bankruptcies among banks destabilized Japan's financial sector. Yet doing so now could be a challenge. Some say the U.S. could accept such a move, since Japan would not be selling yen to keep its currency low, a more common intervention that has been an issue with Washington in the past. But with American inflation already high, it may be difficult to get Washington on board with a move that would weaken the greenback. Such currency intervention faces a more fundamental obstacle. The yen's fall stems partly from a divergence in monetary policy between Washington and Tokyo. The U.S. is raising rates to rein in prices, while BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda has said Japan will "persistently continue" its ultraloose policy.

Borrowing yen at a near-zero interest rate to sell for dollars in the increasingly appealing American market is a logical trade, not just the province of speculators-and exactly wut kept the U.S. 'afloat' after 2008-see Yen carry trade and that will not work very well until interest rates are much highere here-bond market working on that already though. Even if government intervention temporarily checked the currency's depreciation, this source of downward pressure means such a move may not be sustainable.

What will likely habben is the the FRB will do a currency swap with the BOJ and buy an ass-ton of Yen. They have agreements with several Central Banks-the B.O.J being one of them that started in 2007 (right in front of the 2008 mkt drop) and then terminated in Feb of 2010 but reactivated 3 months later and are on-going still.

Central bank liquidity swaps

Two types of swap lines were established: dollar liquidity lines and foreign-currency liquidity lines. The swap lines are designed to improve liquidity conditions in dollar funding markets in the United States and abroad by providing foreign central banks with the capacity to deliver U.S. dollar funding to institutions in their jurisdictions during times of market stress. The Federal Reserve operates these swap lines under the authority of section 14 of the Federal Reserve Act and in compliance with authorizations, policies, and procedures established by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). In May 2010, the FOMC announced that in response to the re-emergence of strains in short-term U.S. dollar funding markets it had authorized dollar liquidity swap lines with the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank. In October 2013, the Federal Reserve and these central banks announced that their existing temporary liquidity swap arrangementsincluding the dollar liquidity swap lineswould be converted to standing arrangements that will remain in place until further notice.
