Evacuations after Kagoshima's Sakurajima volcano erupts

Dozens of people were ordered to evacuate their homes after a fiery volcanic eruption in southern Japan on Sunday as the national weather agency issued its top-level alert for the mountain. Television footage showed red-hot rocks and dark plumes exploding from Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture, which erupted around 8:05 p.m. There were no immediate reports of damage, said Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has instructed the government "to work closely with the local municipality to ensure damage prevention, such as through evacuations," Isozaki told reporters.

The seaside city ordered residents to evacuate its Arimura district and part of the Furusato district, which are home to 51 people, according to local media. Sakurajima volcano frequently spits out smoke and ash, and is a major tourist attraction. Sunday's blast propelled large cinders about 2.5 kilometers from the crater, the Meteorological Agency said, while the smoke reached around 300 meters and merged with the clouds. The agency raised its alert for Sakurajima to level five, the top level, which urges evacuations. Previously it was at level three, which bans entry to the mountain.

The volcano saw four earlier eruptions between Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with the plume reaching as high as 1,200 meters.

Boeing Defense Workers Reject Contract, Plan to Strike Aug. 1

Nearly 2,500 members of a union that represents three Boeing Co. defense locations in the St. Louis area voted to reject the company’s contract offer and plan to strike starting Aug. 1. “We cannot accept a contract that is not fair and equitable, as this company continues to make billions of dollars each year off the backs of our hardworking members,” the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837 said in a statement on its website Sunday. The union said the company “previously took away a pension from our members” and isn’t compensating their 401(k) plans adequately.

The strike will affect workers in St. Louis and St. Charles in Missouri and Mascoutah, Illinois, who build military aircraft including the F-15, F-18, T-7A trainer and the MQ-25 unmanned refueler-(a carrier based drone refueling system-picrel). The failed negotiations may portend an equally tough time for Boeing in the next round of contract talks for IAM’s much larger contingent at the company’s Seattle commercial-aircraft operations, which has about 30,000 Machinists members in a separate bargaining unit.

“Boeing is disappointed with Sunday’s vote to reject a strong, highly competitive offer,” a company spokesman said via email. “We are activating our contingency plan to support continuity of operations in the event of a strike.”

In a statement on July 21, the union said Boeing offered “subpar” general wage increases, “no change in wage progression, and takeaways” in the 401(k).

Boeing said in May that it’s moving its headquarters from Chicago to Arlington, Virginia, to be nearer decision-makers at the Pentagon and elsewhere in the US government. Its shares have dropped 21% so far this year through Friday’s close. The company reported adjusted losses in 2020 and 2021.

and then we get to 31 U.S. Code § 5111 - Minting and issuing coins, medals, and numismatic items

Which basically says they are not allowed to make a profit and if they do it has to be plowed back into the cost of procurement and production to lower costs.'''

(b) The Department of the Treasury has a coinage metal fund and a coinage profit fund. The Secretary may use the coinage metal fund to buy metal to mint coins. The Secretary shall credit the coinage profit fund with the amount by which the nominal value of the coins minted from the metal exceeds the cost of the metal.

And where it gets good is here in section (c) that speaks to the need to go outside of it's normal suppliers to secure the blanks for the production of the coins

(c) Procurements Relating to Coin Production.

(1) In general.—The Secretary may make contracts, on conditions the Secretary decides are appropriate and are in the public interest, to acquire articles, materials, supplies, and services (including equipment, manufacturing facilities, patents, patent rights, technical knowledge, and assistance) necessary to produce the coins referred to in this title.

So the US Treasury Secretary has implicit authority to go out into the open market(s) and procure the silver needs to satisfy demand however they must file a report and document the reasons for doing so.......the best part is below in section (3)

(3) Determination.—(A) In general.—

Any determination of the Secretary referred to in paragraph (2) shall not be reviewable in any administrative proceeding or court of the United States.

They can do whatever they want or in this case NOT and NONE of it is reviewable by anyone and specifically stated as such....simply put the answer from the US Treasury is SUCK IT
