Clear Channel Outdoor revenue falls short, shares skid

Advertising companies such as Clear Channel, whose fortunes are closely tied to the health of the economy, have been warning of weak spending because of the euro zone crisis and slowing growth in China, but they have benefited from political advertising in the run-up to the U.S. Presidential election.

Bain Capital Partners LLC, co-founded by U.S. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is part of a private equity group that owns Clear Channel Communications Inc, which in turn controls 89 percent of Clear Channel Outdoor.

Clear Channel Outdoor, which sells advertising space on billboards, public transport and other outdoor venues, said growth in international revenue resulted mainly from strong demand in Australia, China, and from the Olympics in London.

Competitors include JC Decaux SA (JCDX.PA), CBS Corp’s CBS.N CBS Outdoor and Lamar Advertising Co (LAMR.O).

April 23, 2013 06:23 AM Eastern Daylight Time

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20130423005823/en/Clear-Channel-Mobile-Platform-Bus-Stop-Smarter

Every day, ADi will challenge thousands of people waiting for their bus or passing the bus stop with three new technology questions. Anybody who answers all three correctly will be able to enter a prize draw and share their success with friends on social media.

The nationwide campaign is designed to raise awareness of the new Mobile Platform from leading outdoor advertising company Clear Channel UK. The platform launched at 10,000 bus stops last month and allows the public to tap or scan panels next to adverts to access content such as movie trailers and video clips; download vouchers and promotions; or locate their nearest restaurant or retailer. The platform is also rolling out real-time journey information so commuters can tap or scan their mobile to find out when their bus is arriving.

Matthew Dearden, Chief Executive of Clear Channel UK said – “The Human vs Machine game is a fun and free way for people to familiarise themselves with the interactive tags that have sprung up at thousands of bus stops right across the UK.

“With tags now on 10,000 shelters, the new service offers a simple but revolutionary way for people to access great content, download vouchers or get real-time journey information simply by tapping or scanning the distinctive panels next to advertising posters at their local bus stop.”

The new mapping tool – the first of its kind to operate in a UK bus shelter – was developed and funded by Clear Channel to coincide with the Year of the Bus – a celebration of both the heritage of London buses and a look ahead to their future.

Positioned on one of London’s busiest shopping streets at Piccadilly Circus’s bus stop ‘G’, the state-of-the-art digital screen incorporates TfL’s data feed of live departure information to allow passengers to track their bus in real time. Alongside live bus arrival information, the interactive panel offers wider transport network updates from the London Underground and real-time availability of nearby Barclays Cycle Hire bikes and docking points.

The panel also offers local area information including maps and walking routes to tourist attractions, theatres and shops. Over the next two months, customer interaction with the panel will be monitored, by Clear Channel UK, and analysed to enhance the service.

With seventy per cent of Londoners now owning a Smartphone and eighty seven per cent using the internet for maps and directions, there is an increased demand from customers to be able to access the information they need to travel around the capital through digital and social media.
