The explosion was so huge, Emad Abour thought a nuclear bomb had dropped near the hospital where he works in Beirut. The ground rolled like an earthquake. Windows peeled from their metal frames and shattered. Heavy ward doors were lifted from their hinges and thrown across the floor.

The blast wave raged through the city to the mountains, bringing people to their knees. It struck with the force of a 3.5-magnitude earthquake, according to Germany’s geosciences centre GFZ, and was felt 290 km (180 miles) across the Mediterranean in Cyprus.

At St George Hospital, around a kilometre from the epicentre of the explosion at Beirut port, Abour’s ears were still ringing, as he crawled to the intensive care unit to check on patients.

At least 70 people were killed and 3,000 injured by the explosion which rocked the Lebanese capital, flattening much of the port and sending a towering mushroom cloud of grey and red coloured ash into the sky.

“It was the worst thing I have ever seen,” the 21-year-old said, still shaking with blood smeared down his face from pulling the wounded out from rubble and pulling them to safety.

Lebanese General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim said the explosions were likely set off by material that had been seized several years ago, according to the Associated Press.

The German foreign ministry said staff at the German embassy were wounded in the explosion.

"The wounded also include embassy personnel," the ministry said. "We cannot for the moment exclude German nationals figuring among the dead and wounded."

The German embassy building, located not far from the port, was damaged but the "seriousness of the damage cannot yet be determined for now," the foreign ministry said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said through her spokeswoman that she was shocked by the event and promised aid for Lebanon.

Port chicago disaster July 17, 1944

An ammunition ship explodes while being loaded in Port Chicago, California, killing 332 people on July 17, 1944. The United States’ World War II military campaign in the Pacific was in full swing at the time. Poor procedures and lack of training led to the disaster.

Port Chicago, about 30 miles north of San Francisco, was developed into a munitions facility when the Naval Ammunition Depot at Mare Island, California, could not fully supply the war effort. By the summer of 1944, expansion of the Port Chicago facility allowed for loading two ships at once around the clock.

The Navy units assigned to the dangerous loading operations were generally segregated African-American units. For the most part, these men had not been trained in handling munitions. Additionally, safety standards were forgotten in the rush to keep up frenetic loading schedules.

On the evening of July 17, the SS Quinault Victory and SS E.A. Bryan, two merchant ships, were being loaded. The holds were being packed with 4,600 tons of explosives–bombs, depth charges and ammunition. Another 400 tons of explosives were nearby on rail cars. Approximately 320 workers were on or near the pier when, at 10:18 p.m., a series of massive explosions over several seconds destroyed everything and everyone in the vicinity.

The blasts were felt as far away as Nevada and the resulting damage extended as far as San Francisco. Every building in Port Chicago was damaged and people were literally knocked off their feet. Smoke and fire extended nearly two miles into the air. The pilot of a plane flying at 9,000 feet in the area claimed that metal chunks from the explosion flew past him.

Missing Fort Riley warrant officer found dead in Kansas hiking area

Military insiders are shining a light on a recent public relations mishap in the Canadian Armed Forces. Controversy has arisen after the CAF dedicated a team to inform the public about the effects of civil disobedience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Insiders told the Ottawa Citizen that the CAF instituted a propaganda campaign during the pandemic without a well-established overview.

The programs main purpose included manipulation and projection of certain media that was made to convince the public to conform to current pandemic related legislation, and if needed, maintain order in case of mass rejection of these laws.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s press secretary, Floriane Bonneville, told reporters that the propaganda campaign was a "mistake" and mentioned that outgoing Gen. Vance, the Chief of Defence Staff, will assemble a "team of legal, communications and policy staff, to investigate what happened."

Gen. Jon Vance quickly put the brakes on the team’s actions due to the overreaching dystopian aspect of the program. Officials in the Armed Forces saw similarities between the way they projected anti-Taliban messages in Afghanistan and the way that the planned to inform the public about civil disobedience, including using military vehicles with speakers and setting up portable radio outposts. The plans included “village assessments” which would be held between Canadian military leaders and Canadian NGOs or heads of religious organizations.

This mishap comes to light after a separate investigation launched by the Canadian Armed Forces deems to unravel a perceived breach of privacy by an intelligence unit working inside of the military on COVID-19 related information gathering. The Cape Breton Post says the investigation's main purpose was to determine whether this unit illegally collected information from the public’s social media accounts during the pandemic.

The Canadian Armed Forces told reporters that “Facebook, Reddit, Instagram and Twitter accounts were scanned by the five-person group called the Precision Information Team or PiT.” Apparently all of the data was publicly available.

These investigations come at a time when many Canadian citizens are worried about the overreaching properties of COVID-19 related legislation and the role of the government in the response.

Yes.

Hezbollah is know to have stashed large amounts of nitrates in urban centers as a threat or to prepare for a large bomb. Even in London England. And they have openly threatened a nuclear scale ANFO bomb in Haifa Israel. So it is very possible that this explosion was somebody either taking out a stash before it could be moved, or perhaps. somebody collecting explosives for a job who was not careful enough and blew up the stash.

It is not unheard of for fuel air explosions to happen in an industrial and warehouse area where the air gets filled with a mixture of different chemicals when a chain of fires and explosions rips through the area. It escalates when you do chemistry in the sky. A port city in China had a similar explosion a few years back.

I don't know about you but if I'm one of those dock workers looking at a million pounds of ammonium nitrate every day, I might not soon forget about it. Especially in Lebanon / N Africa. Things like that hold a high market value and folks in those area like to steal expensive things. Seems a bit far-fetched to think $5-50 million dollars worth of goods sat on a dock forgotten for half a decade.

Isn't the most obvious story line that Israel probably found something in that warehouse they didn't like, and decided to blow it up? Some reports of weapons or rocket fuel, whatever, but a warehouse full of fertilizer or fireworks is a great way to hide an operation. Couple bombs and BOOM, no more evidence.

Strike team, stealth fighter, cruise missile. IDF bombs targets all the time in Iran or wherever if they think it is connected to rockets, so I guess I don't see what the big mystery is about this warehouse.

Other than it was a big fucking explosion.

I remember the giant tsunami that swept over Fukushima and surrounds. We watched footage online showing entire city suburbs smashed to bits by the waters, and the news would say things like "150 people feared dead" and it was ridiculous because if entire towns were just obliterated by a tidal wave, obviously more than 150 people would have died. I don't know why they do that. Sure enough over 22,000 people died in that tsunami that day.
