"The ammonium nitrate is like the engine behind the explosion, but the engine needs fuel," Goodpaster told Life's Little Mysteries. In fact, bombs need two components beside the fertilizer: a detonator and a fuel. The fertilizer must be mixed with a fuel in an exact ratio, and the detonator must be able to generate sufficient energy, he said.

 

How bombs explode

 

The first thing that happens during a fertilizer bomb blast is the explosion of the detonator. It contains a small amount of an explosive compound in it, and when it discharges, it creates what experts call a detonation wave. This detonation wave radiates outward from the detonator at a speed of about 2 to 3 miles per second through the mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel, Goodpaster said.

 

The energy of the detonation wave causes the ammonium nitrate in the fertilizer to vaporize – the solid fertilizer becomes a gas in an instant. The ammonium and nitrate molecules break down, and a large amount of oxygen gas is suddenly formed.

 

The gas released from the decomposing fertilizer is what drives the explosion. The rapid release of oxygen, along with the energy from the detonation wave, ignites the fuel. When the liquid fuel ignites, it rapidly combusts, and even more gas is released.

 

"All that gas is generated in a very short amount of time," Goodpaster said. "That's what causes the pressure waves of the explosion."

 

The pressure waves travel at the speed of sound, about 1,100 feet (343 meters) per second, and can damage nearby structures or even kill bystanders if the waves are strong enough, Goodpaster said. Heat is also released during the combustion, and it may be enough to set a car on fire, but most of the damage from such explosions is due to the pressure waves.

 

Perfect mix needed

 

The fertilizer and the fuel have to be combined in a just the right proportions, Goodpaster said, or else nothing will happen.

 

"If they're not mixed the right way, the detonator could go off, but there will be no explosion. It would just burn," he said.

 

Household fertilizer contains chemicals other than ammonium nitrate, said Steven Van Kauwenbergh, principal scientist with the International Fertilizer Development Center, a non-profit industry group. When other chemicals such as ammonium sulfate or urea are mixed in, the ammonium nitrate is no longer able to explode, he said.

 

Accidents involving fertilizer explosion are very rare, Van Kauwenbergh said. Perhaps the worst such accident was an explosion that occurred in Germany in 1921. Workers at a fertilizer plant were using dynamite to try to break up a large mass of solidified fertilizer that had formed and was clogging up the functioning of the plant, he said. In the ensuing explosion, at least 500 people were killed.

Police found ammonium nitrate in the Las Vegas shooter's car here's why the explosive material is so dangerous–

 

Police said they found the compound in the car of Stephen Paddock, the 64-year-old who gunned down 59 people and wounded over 520 others in Las Vegas Sunday night.

 

Ammonium nitrate was what made the explosion at the West, Texas, fertiliser plant in 2013 so destructive.

 

The chemical is typically used in fertilisers, cold packs, and explosives.

 

Takata used ammonium nitrate in its airbags, which is what turned them into “shrapnel”, killing people around the world, The New York Times reported. The US Department of Transportation ordered the company phase out the compound by the end of 2018, or face even heftier fines than it’s already had to pay.

 

Some countries are phasing out or banning the compound because of its potential use in improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

 

But in the US, you can buy ammonium nitrate on Amazon, at gardening stores, or from agricultural suppliers.

 

The US Department of Homeland Security is required to “regulate the sale and transfer of ammonium nitrate by an ammonium nitrate facility” to prevent people from using it for terrorism.

 

While you may need to show an ID proving you’re over 18, the chemical is surprisingly easy to get.

 

Along with the ammonium nitrate, 42 guns at Paddock’s hotel suite and home, and several-thousand rounds of ammunition, investigators also found Tannerite, an explosive powder used for long-range target practice, at Paddock’s home.

 

The company says on its website that the “KICK-A–” invention is legal under federal law to buy in all 50 states. An Arizona State University professor who posted on Twitter for years about social justice issues and recently detailed her fight with COVID-19 was said to have died last week — but she actually never existed.

BethAnn McLaughlin — who announced the made-up professor’s death on July 31 — admitted to The New York Times on Tuesday that she was behind the hoax.

“I take full responsibility for my involvement in creating the @sciencing_bi Twitter account,” she said in a statement through her lawyer.

“My actions are inexcusable. I apologize without reservation to all the people I hurt.”

Since 2016, the anonymous account @Sciencing_Bi had posted frequently about sexual harassment and diversity in science, making connections with other academics online.

The account claimed to be an anthropology professor who had grown up in Alabama and “fled the south because of their oppression of queer folk,” according to the Times.

It also made pointed references to being Native American and began to identify as Hopi earlier this year.

And it was active in the career of McLaughlin, a neuroscientist, even promoting a petition for her to receive tenure Vanderbilt University, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

In April, @Sciencing_Bi announced its coronavirus diagnosis and then documented the symptoms including a loss of language fluency, according to Buzzfeed News.

The account blamed ASU for her condition, tweeting in June that the school “forced me to teach 200 person lectures instead of closing” in April.

She also claimed the university cut her salary by 15 percent while she was in the hospital.

Then, a seemingly distraught McLaughlin wrote in a lengthy, mournful Twitter thread on Friday that the anonymous professor had died.

“Looking at her side of the bed and crying. Just a lot of crying. I literally can do nothing,” she wrote.

The supposed death spurred outrage from others in academia, with a professor saying: “This person was a scientist who got Covid because they’d been forced to teach.”

NSW police officers charged with attempted rape, production of child abuse material

 

Two serving NSW police officers have been refused bail after being charged with attempted rape and the production of child abuse material.

Senior constables Angelo Franco Dellosa, 30, and James Delinicolis, 29, were on Wednesday morning arrested in western Sydney and taken to Hurstville Police Station.

The expanding white cloud in that explosion is water vapor in the air, due to the compression and shockwave. If the explosion had been underground, there would have been a small, fasr wave in the water (2.75 tons of exposives is a LOT less visibly forceful underwater due to water's incompressibilty - it has a tamping effect). There wasn't one. It happened on land, above sea level.

 

The vapor is the same effect as an aircraft going supersonic…

Anyone done any digging on the China explosion that happened back around 2017 and smashed a decent area there too? I believe was a container/fuel storage facility in Tianjin.

Some interesting differences in the blast of that compared to what was seen in Beirut despite the size of it. Must more flame/visible heat than the shear intensity of the shockwave that was seen today. Even despite the size of the multiple blasts in this China explosion, doesn't appear to have the same force.

Those silos were cracked open on one side on the largest blast and the grain within spilled down on top of all the ejected debris.

Well, considering that it happened at a waterfront, and the shock created a crater, and water's not compressible, I'd expect a little bit of geysering.

The QAnon Conspiracy Theory: A Security Threat in the Making clearly explains what QAnon is, its roots in American history, and how and why some of its adherents turn violent.

 

The CTC is an academic institute within West Point focused on studying terrorism and ideology through research. Amaranth Amarasingam, a professor of religion at Queen’s University, and Marc-André Argentino, a PhD Candidate at Concordia University, co-authored the paper, which breaks down the threat posed by QAnon and clear and simple terms. “Though less organized than jihadi or far-right extremists…QAnon represents a novel challenge to public security,” the paper said.

 

QAnon can be confusing for the outside observer. It’s like the greatest hits of American conspiracy theories from the past 50 years, supercharged, and turned into a vast online roleplaying game. It’s hard to articulate what adherents believe and why those beliefs lead to violence. It has no central leader and encourages its followers to do their own research.

 

“QAnon is thus markedly different from other far-right extremist groups and jihadi groups,” the paper said. “As it lacks both a clear organizational structure and a centralization of interpretive duties.”

 

Broadly, QAnon followers believe President Trump is waging a war against a shadowy cabal of entrenched politicians who traffic children for occult and sexual purposes. It sounds strange and novel, but as the West Point paper points out, it’s a repackaged version of old conspiracy theories. "
