Biden to campaign in Georgia ahead of runoff election

CNN logo Biden to campaign in Georgia ahead of runoff election

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to travel to Atlanta on Monday to campaign on behalf of two Democrats looking to flip control of the US Senate in Tuesday's runoff elections.

Tuesday's closely-watched races will determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate, which will affect the kind of legislation Biden would be able to pass through the chamber as president.

Democrats Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock are looking to defeat incumbent Republican Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, respectively. The elections were forced to runoffs because no candidate surpassed 50% of the vote in November.

If Ossoff and Warnock both win their races, the Senate would be tied 50-50 Republicans and Democrats, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris able to act as a tie-breaking vote, therefore giving control of the chamber to Democrats.

Biden's campaign stop in Georgia will happen the same day President Donald Trump is scheduled to headline a rally in Dalton, Georgia, to campaign for Perdue and Loeffler.

The appearances in the state will come one day after The Washington Post published an audio recording of a stunning one-hour phone call in which Trump pushed Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" votes to overturn the election results after his loss to Biden. CNN also obtained an audio recording of the phone call.

During the call, Trump lambasted Raffensperger, who is also a Republican, for refusing to falsely say that Trump won the election in Georgia and repeatedly touted baseless claims of election fraud. Georgia recertified its presidential election results last month, and again found Biden as the winner following three counts of ballots.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris slammed Trump's phone call as "a bald, bald-faced, bold abuse of power by the President of the United States," while campaigning for Ossoff and Warnock in Savannah, Georgia, on Sunday.

Biden traveled to Georgia last month to campaign for Ossoff and Warnock. At a drive-in rally in Atlanta, Biden slammed Georgia's Republican senators for siding with President Donald Trump in his efforts to undo the election results in Georgia.

The President-elect also previously appeared in a campaign ad urging Georgians to vote for Ossoff and Warnock, saying he needed the two Democrats in the Senate to pass legislation providing economic relief to Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic. Biden said in the ad he was prepared to sign a Covid-19 relief package on his first day in office that fully funds the public health response to the pandemic, ensures free Covid testing and vaccinations for all Americans and provides economic support to small businesses.

Top Georgia Election Official Says White House Pushed Him to Take Trump Call

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Georgia's Republican top election official said on Monday the White House had pushed him against his better judgment to take a call from President Donald Trump in which he pressured the state to overturn his November presidential election defeat there.

In the call on Saturday, Trump told Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" enough votes to overturn his election loss in the southern state, according to a recording published by U.S. media.

"I never believed it was appropriate to speak to the president but he pushed out, I guess he had his staff push us. They wanted a call," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told ABC's "Good Morning America."

A state Democrat has called for a probe into whether Trump had violated Georgia election law on the call. Raffensperger and his office's general counsel rejected Trump's assertions of electoral fraud in the hour-long conversation.

"We took the call, and we had a conversation. He did most of the talking, we did most of the listening," Raffensperger said.

"But I do want to make my points that the data that he has is just plain wrong. He had hundreds and hundreds of people he said that were dead that voted. We found two. That's an example of just his bad data."

Trump for two months has been claiming contrary to evidence that his loss to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. Multiple state and federal reviews, as well as courts, have rejected those claims as unsupported..

Biden won the state-by-state Electoral College by 306-232 and carried the popular vote by more than 7 million ballots.

The only Democrat on Georgia's election board, David Worley, asked Raffensperger to investigate whether the president had violated state law that prohibits solicitation to commit election fraud.

"To say that I am troubled by President Trump's attempt to manipulate the votes of Georgians would be an understatement," Worley wrote on Sunday in a letter to Raffensperger that was seen by Reuters.

Raffensperger said the district attorney in Fulton County, home to Atlanta, might be the appropriate authority to carry out such an investigation. The county's district attorney, Fani Willis, did not immediately return a request for comment.

In another blow to Trump, staunch conservative U.S. Senator Tom Cotton refused to sign on to a long-shot campaign by nearly a dozen other fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate this week to challenge Biden's victory, warning it was outside of Congress' power and would "establish unwise precedents."

In a statement on Sunday, Cotton said he would not join his colleagues Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley and others in defying Republican Party leaders by objecting on Jan. 6 when lawmakers meet to tally the votes in the Electoral College - a largely symbolic act of certification.

Cotton noted that limited, symbolic role in his statement, saying any such refusal to carry out its duty "would take away the power to choose the president from the people, which would essentially end presidential elections and place that power in the hands of whichever party controls Congress."

Cotton, Cruz and Hawley are among those considered possible 2024 presidential candidates. Trump, who has not conceded defeat, has also floated the idea of running again in 2024.

Several moderate Republicans have also joined Democrats in criticizing Cruz, Hawley and others for undermining the of the voters and planning to object – a move they say will not succeed in installing Trump but will erode confidence in U.S. democracy.

It was not immediately clear how the release of Trump's call with Raffensperger could impact the Republicans' objection plan.

"This call was not a helpful call," Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, who is among those planning to object to the certification, told Fox News in an interview on Monday.

House of Representatives Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy defended Trump's call in an interview with Fox News on Monday. "The president's always been concerned about the integrity of the election, and the president believes that there are things that happened in Georgia that he wants to see accountability for," McCarthy said.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has publicly acknowledged Biden's win. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who will oversee the Jan. 6 proceedings, has said the Republicans have the right to object.

Even if Republicans in the Senate were successful in their objections, the campaign would fail in the U.S. House, which is controlled by Democrats.

Who Were Mason and Dixon?

Well, there is a backstory that explains everything about one of the most significant surveying achievements in North America. The Mason-Dixon Line is not some geographical faux paus.

Todd Babcock, a Pennsylvania surveyor, and founder of The Mason and Dixon Line Preservation Partnership, says Charles Mason, an astronomer, and Jeremiah Dixon, a surveyor, introduced surveying techniques to North America that were used to draw boundary lines for western states in the U.S.

"In many respects the techniques we use today are very similar to those used by Mason and Dixon," Babcock says. "I use the analogy that Mason and Dixon used the constellation of stars to guide them and today we use a constellation of satellites."

Mason and Dixon, who were Englishmen, were hired in 1763 by the King of England to settle a land dispute between the aristocratic colonial families, Quaker William Penn II and the Charles Calvert of Maryland. The two families quarreled and fought over land for decades. Colonial landowners along the line separating the two proprietors' land feared being asked to pay taxes to both the Penns and Calverts because both families were claiming the same land.

So Mason and Dixon spent 58 months surveying a 233-mile (374-kilometer) stretch of land, from Philadelphia westward. It was mostly wilderness, and they established the boundaries of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia (now West Virginia). It became a steadfast boundary. The Penns were to the North with Philadelphia as their hub, and the Calverts to the South with Baltimore as their hub. The Mason-Dixon Line also included the 83-mile (133-kilometer) north-south border between Pennsylvania (which is now Delaware) and eastern Maryland. The line starts in the southwest corner of Delaware and runs north.

Fulton County Georgia Ballot Inspection Hearing Subverted

Georgia Stalling to Prevent Forensic Review of Suspected Fraudulent Absentee Ballots

By Joe Hoft

Published January 4, 2021

Corrupt politicians in Georgia are doing all they can to prevent the forensic analysis of absentee ballots in the state.

Moments ago, Heather Mullins from Real America’s Voice reported that the hearing set for today to determine if ballots from the November 3rd election could be forensically inspected, as supported by the Georgia Senate vote, was cancelled and the case was to be transferred to another county.

A few minutes after the above memo went out, Mullins reports that the hearing was derailed in an attempt to send the case to another county. However, an objection was filed. The problem is the ballots will not be reviewed today as a result.

It is believed that the attempt to move the case was because Fulton County does not have all the ballots to inspect. Once inspected, thousands of fraudulent ballots are expected to be uncovered.

More stalling and obfuscation in the effort to steal the election from President Trump. Georgians should be protesting right now.

Judge nixes latest Trump bid to invalidate Georgia election

Associated Press

January 5, 2021 — 1:01pm

ATLANTA — A federal judge rejected President Donald Trump's latest bid to overturn his election loss in Georgia during a hearing Tuesday that the president's lawyer blocked members of the public from listening to remotely amid the coronavirus pandemic.

U.S. District Judge Mark H. Cohen ruled from the bench to deny a motion seeking to de-certify Georgia's election. But only those present in the courtroom were able to watch the hearing held via videoconference because Trump's lawyer did not consent to remote access for the public, the judge's staff said.

Officials across the country have routinely allowed members of the media and the public to watch or listen to legal proceedings remotely throughout the coronavirus pandemic to keep people from packing courthouses.

An email seeking comment was sent to Trump's attorney after the hearing.

The ruling in a last-ditch lawsuit filed by Trump last week is the latest in a string of legal defeats the president has suffered in his futile attempt to undo Democrat Joe Biden's victory.

It comes a day before Congress meets to count the Electoral College votes affirming Biden's win. In a phone call made public on Sunday, Trump pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" enough votes to reverse the state's election outcome.

The lawsuit recycles baseless claims of "illegal voting" that have already been flatly rejected by courts across the country. Lawyers representing Georgia blasted the case, saying in court documents that "a barrage of allegations and suits does not undermine the facts and should not undermine our democracy."

Judges have denied or dismissed dozens of cases backed by Trump and his allies, who have pushed unsupported charges of widespread fraud in battleground states.

NBC News Exit Poll: Georgia runoff voters split by party on whether presidential election was fair

Voters in Georgia's Senate runoff had less confidence in the accuracy of the vote count on Tuesday than voters did in November's election, the exit poll found.

Jan. 5, 2021, 5:13 PM EST

By Stephanie Perry, Mara Haeger and Sarah Lentz

A majority of voters in Tuesday's Georgia Senate runoff said the 2020 presidential election was conducted fairly in the state — and an even greater share said they expected that Tuesday's votes would be counted accurately — but there was a significant division along party lines.

Fifty-six percent of voters said the 2020 presidential election was run fairly in Georgia, while 4 in 10 said it was not, according to NBC News Exit Poll of early and Election Day voters.

There were stark differences by party: 93 percent of Georgia Senate runoff voters who identify as Democrats thought the presidential election was conducted fairly, while only 21 percent of Republicans agreed. Among independents, 58 percent said the election was conducted fairly.

When asked about the vote count for Tuesday's runoff election, 73 percent of voters said they were very or somewhat confident that the votes would be counted accurately, according to the NBC News Exit Poll of early and in-person voters.

Only 26 percent said they were not confident that the votes would be counted accurately.

Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman will object to electors from contested states when a Joint Session of Congress meets in Washington on Wednesday.

Wittman, a Republican representing the Commonwealth’s 1st District, made his intentions clear in a recent Facebook post expressing his “full support” for plans to object to contested electors.

Last month, he joined over half of his Republican House colleagues in signing on to an Amicus Brief in support of Texas vs Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

“I am in full support of objecting to electors in order to debate and examine evidence of election results in states where Constitutional questions have been raised,” wrote Wittman. “In fact, in December I joined a majority of my Republican colleagues and Leadership in the House of Representatives in sending an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court in reference to Texas v. Pennsylvania, et al. relating to the November general election.”

Jimmy Carter Declines Biden “Inauguration” Invite

Former President Jimmy Carter revealed he and his wife will not attend the inauguration of potential President Joe Biden.

A spokesman for Carter wife Rosalynn issued a statement describing why the former first family declined the invite:

“President and Mrs. Carter will not travel to Washington for the inauguration but have sent their best wishes to President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris and look forward to a successful administration.”

The news follows the Biden camp effectively canceling their own inauguration, as they’ve opted to hold the event, for the most part, virtually.

In the event that fraudulent election results stand and Biden becomes President, the inauguration is expected to have a televised parade in lieu of an in-person, large event.

So, the reports from the Dekalb CEO was 130K. That was said on CNN three times. And then Sterling shows up like a deranged election leprechaun and says 'nope' it's 170K. That's what just dropped. #MAGIC

GEORGIA.

Ballot box with ballot

DEKALB COUNTY: Approximately 130K votes outstanding, 117K advance in-person & 12K mail-in ballots. Election officials want to count them TONIGHT. (CNN)

So, if that breaks 80/20 D, then that's projects to be a bit short of what Ds want, especially in Perdue race.
