Team Biden Starts Its First Talks With Taliban By Sending Trump-Appointed Envoy

Based on a deal signed under Trump in February 2020, US troops were to be fully withdrawn from America's longest running war in history in May 2021; however, in the first month of the Biden White House the Pentagon said this would not happen based on the Taliban failing to uphold key terms it agreed to.

 

"The Taliban have not met their commitments," Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told a Jan.28 press briefing.

 

Kirby said at the time that while the "goal" remained a full and timely US troops exit from Afghanistan, he underscored "we're going to be making our decisions in a sober, rational manner that is driven by what's in our best interests and the interests of our partner in Afghanistan, as well as our NATO partners and allies."

Wreckage from TWA Flight 800 to be destroyed years after explosion

Well I'm sure someone has had the misfortune to faceplant his eye onto a rock at least once, but the odds have go to be low.

Unless he was unconscious before he fell, our reflexes do all they can to prevent head injuries. Thus the expected injuries for a conscious person falling are contusions and cuts on the hands, arms, elbows, knees, shoulder. Katie Porter Is Going After Congressional Millionaires. Financial Disclosures Show She’s One Of Them.

 

Porter has up to $2.8 million in assets, according to recent filings

 

Rep. Katie Porter (D., Calif.), a self-styled working-class champion who has criticized the number of millionaires in Congress, has up to nearly $3 million in assets, filings show.

 

According to her most recent financial disclosure report, Porter has between $1.2 million and $2.8 million in assets. Porter's leadership PAC, Truth to Power, recently solicited donations with a statement decrying the fact that millionaires comprise "a shockingly large portion of our federal government."

 

Porter, who entered Congress in 2019, uses her PAC to help elect other left-wing politicians. The PAC was launched in June 2020 and has raised just over a half-million dollars since. It has spent more than $200,000 funding other candidates, according to Federal Election Commission records.

 

"Running for office is as expensive as it is time-consuming," a fundraising email from Truth to Power states. "Ordinary folks who aren't wealthy often don't have the time—and more often, they just don't have the resources—to quit their jobs to run a campaign, hire staff, and pay the bills."

 

Porter has largely evaded questions on her wealth and frequently earns praise for being more "relatable" than most politicians. In early 2020, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote of how her "empathy" stems from being a single mother of three school-age children "wrestling with the same questions other working parents face."

 

But data also show that Porter is well above the salary threshold of the average single parent. According to the 2018 Census Bureau data, households led by single mothers took in a median $45,128 annually. Porter earns a $174,000 congressional salary—nearly four times more than what the average single mother takes in.

 

Porter has also falsely claimed to be the only single mother of young children in Congress.

 

Porter reports between $300,000 and $600,000 in mortgage liabilities, meaning her net worth at its minimum sits between $600,000 and $2.2 million. Figures in financial disclosures are reported in broad ranges rather than exact numbers. Her Truth to Power PAC did not respond to requests for comment.

 

Porter supports H.R. 1, a bill purported by Democrats to stymie the influence of outsized political spending, which Congress will vote on this week. Porter has said that it was her proudest vote in the last Congress and a top priority for this Congress. Republicans have attacked the bill which, among other things, funnels $5 million in public funding into reelection campaigns.

 

"It's absolutely disgusting that while Americans are trying to survive a pandemic, House Democrats are working to funnel $5 million in public money to their own reelection campaigns," Torunn Sinclair, National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman, said of the bill.

Georgia legislators just got serious about fixing this nation’s voter fraud problem by passing a bill requiring ID to vote absentee. The Hill reported,

 

The Georgia state Senate on Tuesday passed legislation that would require voters to submit a driver’s license number, state identification card number or a photocopy of an approved form of identification in order to vote absentee in the state.

 

Predictably, the passing of this bill sparked a protest by Democrats on Monday who don’t want anyone to know who is voting absentee. Voter ID laws mean less fraud, a thing no Democrat I’ve ever known wants. Instead, they pretend it’s “racist” to require IDs. They have no problem, however, requiring IDs to get into their conventions.

 

The protest at the Georgia state capitol was reported to have been joined by Georgia Democrats.

 

Several Democratic members of the Georgia House of Representatives joined in a spontaneous protest against Republican-led election reform bills at the Georgia State Capitol early Friday afternoon.

 

The House members, numbering about a dozen or so, according to 11Alive’s Doug Richards, held signs and chanted in front of the large marble staircase in the capitol building, Richards said.

 

“Spontaneous.” Riiiiight. Whatever the case, the police asked them to leave and mild scuffles followed.

 

But the thing that stood out the most to me is the lack of hyperventilating press coverage of the protest that had elements similar to the “insurrection on the Capitol” on January 6. In the video of the Georgia “insurrection” (because that’s what we’re calling trespassers at the Capitol now, right?) protesters can be seen ignoring police orders and protesting on Georgia state capitol grounds—which might not be legal anymore. Has the president* issued any executive orders banning protests on government property yet? I’d check, but there are so many it would take me till next week to get through them all.

 

Is the National Guard on the way? Will they build a razor-wire fence around the Georgia Capitol? Will the FBI visit every person in this crowd?

 

For the record, I’m against all law-breaking and storming of capitols. But I would like some consistency in the way these things are reported. Is it only an insurrection if Trump supporters break into government buildings and some people die of heart attacks and strokes? Maybe, and hear me out here, we could stop using the word “insurrection” to describe events that are not insurrections. That would be great.

National security watchdog launches investigation into secret trial of Witness J

 

An investigation into the top secret trial, sentencing and jailing of a former military intelligence officer has been restarted by the national security watchdog.

The man, referred to as Witness J, was convicted of mishandling classified information which potentially revealed the identities of agents who had been recruited by Australian intelligence agencies.

 

The incredible details of his plight only became public after an investigation by the ABC, sparking a debate about transparency in Australia's legal system.

 

Last year the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM), James Renwick, launched an inquiry into whether the overreach of national security legislation was responsible for the total secrecy in the case.

 

Witness J was given the moniker of "Alan Johns" for the purpose of the inquiry.

 

Dr Renwick's probe was scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic, hampering the gathering of information before his term as INSLM ended in mid-2020.

His successor, Grant Donaldson, has now launched his own investigation which will examine the effect of the National Security Information (NSI) Act on the justice system.

 

The NSI Act is very broad in its application, allowing the government to request strict suppression orders if it is concerned sensitive and classified information would be aired in court, potentially prejudicing the nation's national security operations.

 

The evidence would need to be heard as part of a trial process, but the restrictions would allow the details to remain inside the four walls of the court.

 

Mr Donaldson hinted at his desire to look into the issue last month, when his office's annual report was tabled in Parliament.

 

"Because of the extraordinary nature of the orders made in the Alan Johns matter, I am likely to review at least certain parts of the NSI Act and commence this promptly," he wrote.

 

"I have seen correspondence from interested parties wishing to be consulted about this matter."

 

Mr Donaldson noted he wanted to review the entire NSI Act, but could not do so given high profile cases currently before the courts which are covered by the strict laws.

 

These include the prosecution of lawyer Bernard Collaery and the former senior spy known as 'Witness K', and defamation proceedings launched by Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith.

Coulter's account was also included in a broader investigation into Cawthorn by The Washington Post, which first reported new details in the North Carolina congressman's biography over the weekend. CNN spoke to two other women who went to school with Cawthorn, both of whom mentioned his invitations on the "fun" drives, and said that turning him down would result in more unwanted attention.

He told CNN last year that he regretted actions he took and apologized to anybody he "made feel uncomfortable."

"Looking back, I wish I could have changed my actions. If I made somebody feel uncomfortable in a situation, that is never my goal," he said.

But the allegations from Cawthorn's time in college were widely known among former students – so much so that in October, more than 150 former students signed onto a letter blasting the then-candidate for his behavior during his stint at the school, which they wrote "was marked by gross misconduct towards our female peers."

"During his brief time at the college, Cawthorn established a reputation for predatory behavior. His modus operandi was to invite unsuspecting women on 'joy rides' in his white Dodge Challenger. Cawthorn would take young women to secluded areas, lock the doors, and proceed to make unwanted sexual advances," the letter read, noting that women at the school were warned not to be alone with Cawthorn.

 

The former students urged voters in North Carolina's 11th Congressional District "to seriously reevaluate Madison Cawthorn's candidacy in light of who he really is," and called on them to "reject (him) at the ballot box."

 

Cawthorn's biography has also come under sharper scrutiny since the Post report. In a 2017 speech, Cawthorn described a 2014 car accident, in which, he alleged, that a friend, Bradley Ledford, left him for dead. But Ledford, who was driving the car, told the Post as part of their investigation that Cawthorn's account of the accident was not true.

 

"That statement he made was false," Ledford told the Post. "That is not at all what happened. I pulled him out of the car the second that I was able to get out of the car."

 

Cawthorn's parents have undercut his story in their own account and Cawthorn later testified he has no memory of the accident.

Cawthorn had also previously claimed

on his campaign website that he was nominated to the prestigious US Naval Academy but his plans were derailed by the accident. In a 2017 deposition obtained by CNN, however, Cawthorn admitted that he had been rejected from the academy before his accident.

Attorney-General Christian Porter is the alleged “Cabinet Minister Rapist” accused of raping 16-yr-old Katharine Thornton in 1988 in Sydney. It is a national security crisis that has left the Prime Minister and federal government open to blackmail by foreign powers and immediate action needs to be taken. I emailed Christian Porter questions today as per below, but he has refused to respond at this point.

 

The Australian media and other politicians have totally missed the national security crisis and focused on the rape allegations which have been dismissed by Scott Morrison as being a police matter and out of his hands. That is a lie by Morrison as the police cannot do anything given Katharine Thornton is now deceased and Morrison knows it.

 

Scott Morrison has said that he has been advised by AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw that he does not need to take any further action. Once again that is a lie because we know that when the Member for Manila Queensland Nationals MP George Christensen was visiting bars, for several months a year, in the Philippines the AFP investigated to see if George Christensen had been compromised as a potential blackmail target by foreign countries.

 

The allegations of rape against Christian Porter are a lot bigger security risk than the allegations against George Christianson yet the AFP Commissioner has not advised the Prime Minister of the security risk? That’s not believable but given the government has only a one-seat majority in parliament they can’t afford to lose even one politician, so Morrison doesn’t care about the national security threat. But all opposition politicians should and must take action even if that means naming Christian Porter in parliament with the parliamentary privilege protection that gives them against defamation action. The reality is Christian Porter won’t sue anyone as it would put a spotlight on the matter and he would lose because the matter is political communication which is protected as per the 1997 High Court judgment Lange v ABC.

 

Scott Morrison and the government are trying to cover-up the rape allegations against Christian Porter and the media won’t name him or Katharine Thornton, but the media’s reporting has left many clues and social media users have been investigating with some of the evidence below. In any government cover-up, it is important to get as many details as possible publically known which puts pressure on the authorities to take action and stop the cover-up.

BEIJING BOLSTERS THE ROLE OF THE CHINA COAST GUARD

 

Beijing’s South China Sea moves have ramped up with the passing of a law allowing the China Coast Guard (CCG) to fire on what it identifies as illegal foreign vessels in waters under its jurisdiction. By virtue of China’s nine-dash line claim, this law applies to the entire South China Sea. Given that China’s claims are opposed by other South China Sea claimants as well as numerous non-claimant countries, the law has proven controversial and raises concerns over whether it will increase the risk of confrontation and conflict in the disputed waters.

 

The Law

 

On January 22, the standing committee of China’s National People’s Congress passed a new law empowering the CCG to employ “all necessary means” to stop or prevent threats from foreign vessels and specifying the circumstances under which different weapons, “handheld, shipborne, or airborne,” can be deployed, as well as allowing it to demolish structures built by other claimants in areas China considers its own. This new law is another manifestation of the CCG’s expanding role. The roles and practices of the CCG have generally been in line with those of other coast guards around the world. This specific law, however, lays out the powers and duties of the CCG in so called “jurisdictional waters,” which include the highly contested areas in the South China Sea. For now, the law amounts to a figurative shot across the bows of other claimants—but that shot could soon be literal.

 

Weaponizing the Coast Guard

 

Coast guards are not usually military forces but law enforcement agencies whose primary roles are constabulary. They are generally armed with machine guns or, at most, medium-calibre deck guns. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is regulated and defined by Title 14 of the United States Code enacted by Congress. It employs various types of small arms such as handguns, shotguns, rifles, and machine guns. The USCG is both a law enforcement agency and branch of the U.S. armed forces, and during times of war or conflict, assets from the coast guard can be transferred to the U.S. Navy. The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) has been engaged in a variety of activities including criminal investigations, maritime security, and search and rescue operations. The Japan Coast Guard Law (Act No. 28 of 27 April 27, 1948, amended by Act No. 71 of 5 September 2012) provides that JCG officers and their assistants may carry a weapon to perform their duties.

 

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) was formed in 2004 and is equivalent to a coast guard. In its initial stages, the MMEA emulated the practices of the USCG and the JCG. The MMEA can be placed under the command of the Malaysian Armed Forces in times of crisis. Most of its ships originally belonged to the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Marine Police, but it has also received patrol boats from the Fisheries Department and Customs Department. Many of its Offshore Patrol Vessels are equipped with medium-range weapons, but others have only small guns for self-defense and law enforcement. The MMEA Act 2004, Part III, details the functions and powers of the agency, which allow it to stop, enter, board, inspect, and search any place, structure, vessel, or aircraft and to detain any vessel or aircraft. These powers are applicable within Malaysia’s maritime zones.

 

Although coast guards around the world, including the USCG, JCG, and MMEA, carry small arms on board for law enforcement and self-defense, these practices have not been as controversial as those of the CCG. The primary question surrounding the weaponization of China’s coast guard is not the kinds of weapon employed, but whether the circumstances under which it is allowed to use them comply with international practices and standards. That the new law allows the use of weapons against foreign ships at reefs claimed by China is of serious concern to other claimants and users of the South China Sea. The fact that the law authorizes the destruction of structures built by other claimants even further bolsters the CCG’s capability to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and maritime rights in the disputed areas of the South China Sea at the expense of other claimants. The new CCG law’s application over disputed areas will raise additional complications and have operational implications for other vessels, including those of the MMEA and the Royal Malaysian Navy, operating in the area. It also shows that China is increasing its presence and might in the South China Sea.

Cohen won best actor in a comedy or musical, and his “Borat” sequel upset the Disney+ adaptation of “Hamilton” by winning best film in the category at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

Update (2005ET): A third woman, former Obama administration and Biden 2020 campaign member Anna Ruch, has come forward to accuse New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of sexual harassment at a Sept. 2019 wedding reception, according to the New York Times.

 

The governor was working the room after toasting the newlyweds, and when he came upon Ms. Ruch, now 33, she thanked him for his kind words about her friends. But what happened next instantly unsettled her: Mr. Cuomo put his hand on Ms. Ruch’s bare lower back, she said in an interview on Monday.

 

When she removed his hand with her own, Ms. Ruch recalled, the governor remarked that she seemed “aggressive” and placed his hands on her cheeks. Joe Biden Revokes Trump’s Order Requiring Classical Architecture for Federal Buildings

 

President Joe Biden has revoked former President Trump’s executive order that required federal buildings be constructed in the style of American classical architectural codes.

 

In a series of revocations, Biden canceled Trump’s order that sought to return federal architecture to its origins of classical, Neoclassical, Art Deco, Georgian, Greek Revival, and Beaux-Arts styles that were preferred by many of the Founding Fathers and the public.

 

With the cancellation of the order, federal buildings will continue to be built in modernist and brutalist architectural styles without taking into consideration the local public’s opinions on the aesthetics of the buildings.

 

Oftentimes, the Trump order noted, classical architectural styles are openly discouraged by the federal government. To turn the tide, the Trump order requested architects to explain why they would choose a modernist style over that of traditional American classical styles when designing and constructing new federal buildings.

 

The order had support from the National Civic Art Society, whose president called the move a “firm” stand for “tradition and beauty in public architecture, and for the heartfelt desires of the American people.”

 

In recent decades, federal buildings have been constructed in modernist and brutalist styles that do not resemble the nation’s founding architectural styles. Buildings such as the Department of Health and Human Services offices, the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building, the San Francisco Federal Building, and the Salt Lake City Federal Courthouse all resemble this shift from classical tradition to cold modernity.

I know many feel that it is taking too long to expose and reverse the illegal November 2020 election. I understand that feeling but I believe the problems facing our country are much bigger than fixing one election. That alone would be relatively easy and quick.

 

Our country is suffering from massive wounds that have been inflicted over decades but have been masked by lies.

 

If we only fix the November 2020 Presidential election (which we must and will fix), we would be putting a band-aid on gaping wounds that must all be repaired to prevent our country and the world from bleeding to death.

 

The injuries have been inflicted worldwide. The wounds are that massive, wide and deep.

 

Our country needs major surgery. A band-aid will not work. True for our country. True for the world.

 

Successful surgery on America’s wounds is linked to a not insignificant extent to the success other countries have in treating their wounds.

 

Once treated, our country and the world can begin the healing process.

 

It is the final outcome of the repair and healing process that is of paramount importance. In order to get it right and maximize the success of the repair, we must have patience. But I do believe we just stop the bleeding soon and get our country in the operating room to start the surgical repairs.

 

We live in extraordinary times. But we are an extraordinary country. We have extraordinary leaders.

 

The surgical fix will be lawful. It must be. We are a country founded on the rule of law.

 

In the end, the rule of law will prevail. The lies will be uncovered. Truth will prevail.

China now has the largest navy in the world, an expansion driven by Beijing’s aspirations to “return” the country to a position of strength and leadership on the world stage, the US Department of Defense (DoD) said in its 2020 report on military and security developments involving China.

 

Published on 1 September the report, often referred to as the ‘China Military Power Report’, states that the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) now has “a battle force of approximately 350 platforms, including major surface combatants, submarines, ocean-going amphibious ships, mine warfare ships, aircraft carriers, and fleet auxiliaries”, compared with the US Navy’s (USN’s) 293 ships using the same measure.

 

Although the cut-off date for the Pentagon assessment was the end of 2019 and developments have continued apace through 2020, the 200 page-long report provides an authoritative source of timescales and numbers for a number of significant capabilities.

The report notes progress in the construction of the PLAN’s third carrier, which in comparison with the two already in service “will be larger and fitted with a catapult launch system”. It assesses that the third carrier will enter service in 2023 and be operational by 2024 and also reports that development continues on the fifth-generation FC-31/J-31 multi-role fighter aircraft “for export or as a future naval fighter for the PLAN's next class of aircraft carriers”, largely confirming persistent rumours.

South China Sea: Satellite images show China building 'full-blown military bases' on artificial islands

Worrying new satellite imagery suggests China is building "full-blown military bases" on controversial artificial islands in the South China Sea.

 

A report by geospatial software company Simularity has revealed what appears to be infrastructure for radars, antennae mounts and what could be a potential military base on Mischief Reef.

 

Classified as an atoll – a ring-shaped coral reef – located 250km from the Philippines, the landmass has been occupied and controlled by the People's Republic of China since 1995.

The images show the construction in seven areas between May 2020 and February 2021.

 

One image dated May 7, 2020 clearly shows an empty plot of space, which is now occupied by a 16 metre-wide cylindrical structure which Simularity claims could be a "possible antennae mount structure".

 

Another shot also shows a concrete structure with a spherical radome – a weatherproof enclosure used to protect a radar antennae – cover nearby. Simularity states this could "possibly be a fixed radar structure".

 

Other sites are still mid-construction or have been cleared for further development.

 

Dr Jay Batongbacal, Director of the Institute for Maritime Affairs Law of the Sea in the University of the Philippines, says the new infrastructure suggests China is digging in.

 

"They're basically adding on survey lens equipment, apparently radars – there's already a lot of them in the reef in the first place," he told Philippine broadcaster ANC.

 

"The addition of new radars appears to indicate they're really expanding the capabilities of this artificial island. And then the fact it is continuing despite everything that has been going on in the rest of the world, it really indicates the intention of China to really fully develop these artificial islands into full-blown military bases."

Chinese Military to Hold Month-Long Drill in Occupied South China Sea

 

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will begin military exercises in the South China Sea — which China illegally claims is entirely within its territory — on Monday, in a move Chinese social media framed as a message to the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.

 

China’s claims in the South China Sea span over the sovereign territory of five countries: Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The government of the Philippines sued China at the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague, a venue open only to state claimants, and received a favorable ruling in 2016 which affirmed the illegality of Beijing’s claims. China has since openly vowed to defy the ruling and the Philippines, under a new presidential administration, has done little to challenge China’s continued presence in its waters.

 

Recent satellite images suggest China has embarked upon further illegal construction operations in parts of Vietnam and the Philippines throughout the time of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, when the territorial dispute had largely disappeared from news headlines.

 

The state-run Global Times newspaper announced the month-long military drills in the sea on Sunday and framed them as a message to Washington, more than one to Manila or Hanoi. The Chinese military will ban all non-PLA ships from entering the territory used for the drill for the entire month of March.

 

“The exercises come at a time when the US has started to again frequently conduct close-up reconnaissance operations on China’s coastal regions as well as on hydrological environments in the South China Sea,” the Global Times noted. The U.S. Navy has regularly conducted what are known as “Freedom of Navigation Operations” (FONOPs) in the South China Sea for years, meant to challenge the idea that the territory in question is exclusively Chinese. The FONOPs are conducted openly and legally.

 

The Global Times appeared to take issue not with the FONOPs, but with alleged “reconnaissance” exercises by both the United States and France, accusing them of “eavesdropping” on the PLA. The newspaper concluded, citing Communist Party-approved “experts,” that China should “enhance combat preparedness” to confront the U.S. Military.

 

Perhaps in response to China’s announcement, Taiwan — a sovereign state that China claims illegally as a rogue province — announced live-fire exercises in the South China Sea on Monday. Focus Taiwan noted that the country had enhanced its military exercises and increased the presence of its Coast Guard in disputed territory in response to growing numbers of illegal Chinese aircraft excursions into Taiwanese airspace since the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

 

“The drills are being staged amid almost daily flights by Chinese military aircraft into airspace around Taiwan, in particular in the southwest part of Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) near the Pratas Islands in recent months,” Focus Taiwan noted.

Chinese activity in the sovereign territory of Taiwan has also recently caused alarm. The South China Sea Chronicle Initiative (SCSCI), a non-governmental organization (NGO), published images last week of what appeared to be a surface-to-air missile base built by the Chinese on an island close to Vietnamese waters. Similar images found ongoing illegal Chinese construction in the Philippines in the past year.

I had it myself. Very mild ache in lung, no big deal, and occasional heart murmur. I would have carried on ignoring it, but I did a facial spot treatment based on strong salicylic acid and it really aggravated it, made that "slight ache" like I didn't want to bend over. Earlier, Yahweh had spoken strongly against making idols of any kind, especially of silver or gold. The first two items on the Ten Commandments involves not worshiping idols or other gods.

 

But here they were — doing both.

 

Their revelry annoyed Yahweh. Moses talked him out of destroying them, though. When Moses returned to his people, he melted the golden calf back down. Then, he ground it to gold dust, scattered it on his desert-bound people’s water source (you heard me), and made them drink that water. Then, he demanded that his loyal people slaughter the disloyal ones — at their god’s command, natch:

 

He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’ ”

 

The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead.

 

Afterward, Moses said, “Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD, since each man went against his son and his brother; so the LORD has bestowed a blessing on you this day.”

 

Of course, this slaughter didn’t fully mollify the Mad Blood God of the Desert (MBGD). He still sent a plague on the remaining loyalists for their worship of the Golden Calf Idol. But it helped a little.

 

This story illustrates how seriously Yahweh took idolatry back then.

Now, let’s fast forward to 2021.

 

A couple of days ago, William Turton offered this now-viral video on his Twitter account.

In the video, we see a statue of Donald Trump dressed in American-flag-style beach shorts, garish red sandals, and an unkempt coat with a loose necktie. The statue’s body is made of something that looks like very shiny gold. It stands on a rolling cart.

 

People shout in pleasure as two men wheel their statue past mostly-unmasked CPAC convention-goers. A woman begins to sing something gospel-sounding. A man behind her shouts, “TRUMPTRUMPTRUMPTRUMP!” One guy marvels, “That is so cool.” Either he or someone else begins to chant, “Four more years! Four more years!” Thankfully, nobody takes him up on it and he trails off sounding a bit sheepish.

 

Later on, Turton shows a picture of the statue in its resting place at one of the convention’s booths. Now, we can see clearly that literal goddamn Golden Calf Idol Donald Trump is holding a copy of the Constitution in one hand (a document he neither understands nor respects in real life) and a star-topped magic wand in the other. Hey, if you’re gonna break the biggest rule in Judeo-Christianity, why not break the one about sorcery too?

Satellite Photos Show China Building Missile Base near Vietnam Border

 

A non-governmental organization called South China Sea Chronicle Initiative (SCSCI) published satellite photos on Wednesday that show China building a surface-to-air missile base near the Vietnamese border.

 

Another possible missile base was detected this month. The Vietnamese government said it is working to verify the reports

 

The second base has reportedly been under construction since last June. Analysts believe the Chinese are also planning to build airbases in the region, but have yet to obtain satellite photos of their construction.

 

Voice of America News (VOA) on Friday described the missile bases as “alarming” in the eyes of the Vietnamese government, and quoted analysts who said Hanoi was right to be worried, given Vietnam’s past conflicts with China and current tensions in the South China Sea:

 

“This is a signal that China is preparing for war along its borders,” said Alexander Vuving, professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii. “It’s a sign that China is preparing for war, maybe not today, not tomorrow but in the long term.”

 

China weathered border skirmishes last year with India following increased military presence and bristled as the navy of its superpower rival the United States passed warships 10 times last year in seas near the Chinese coast. Potential “competition” with the United States would draw in other Asian countries, Vuving said.

In October, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged troops to think about readying for war.

 

Vietnam is one of several nations that disputes China’s illegal claim to control almost the entirety of the South China Sea. In Vietnam’s case, the disputed territory includes valuable natural gas deposits Vietnam wants to develop in partnership with American and Japanese companies.

 

Chinese maritime forces scuttled a joint drilling project between Vietnam’s state energy company PetroVietnam and its Russian counterpart Rosneft last summer, and blocked a deal between PetroVietnam and Spain’s Repsol company a few years before that, in part by credibly threatening to use force against the Vietnamese ventures.

 

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reported last week that Vietnam is shoring up its own defenses in the South China Sea, including significant fortification of its bases in the Spratly Islands. Some of these improvements appear to be concrete emplacements that could hold surface-to-air missile launchers. CSIS cited reports that Vietnam is considering equipping its bases with Russian- and Israeli-made missiles and rocket artillery that could strike nearby Chinese bases.

 

On the other hand, Vietnam appealed for peace in the South China Sea on Thursday after China objected to U.S. Navy ships conducting freedom of navigation patrols near the Spratly and Paracel islands. Vietnam invoked the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which the United States says it is upholding by securing the freedom of international navigation through waters illegally claimed by Beijing.

 

China increased tensions in the South China Sea last week by passing a “Coast Guard Law” that explicitly authorizes its coast guard to fire on foreign vessels and create “temporary exclusion zones” which foreign vessels are forbidden from entering. On Friday, Japan countered by announcing a similar policy for its own coast guard ships stationed around the Senkaku Islands, another chain the Chinese are attempting to control by force.

''April showers bring May flowers''

 

Perhaps everybody heard this rhyme at some point, generally having been taught it at an early age by parents or teachers. It's a popular thing to say and hear around springtime, but one thing you might not know is where the rhyme originated from.

It reaches back to the mid 1500s, although earlier use of "April showers bring May flowers" probably existed. In 1557, a man by the name of Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings he called "A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry." In the April husbandry section, he wrote:

Sweet April showers

Do spring May flowers

As you can see, the rhyme was originally a short poem. However, there is meaning behind the words, as well. "April showers bring May flowers" is a reminder that even the most unpleasant of things, in this case the heavy rains of April, can bring about very enjoyable things indeed – even an abundance of flowers in May.

"April showers bring May flowers" is also a lesson in patience, and one that remains valid to this day. Many of life's greatest things come only to those who wait, and by patiently and happily enduring the clouds and damp of April, you can find yourself more easily able to take in the sights and smells of May. After all, it's easier to love something if you begin with an optimistic outlook.
