Mrs Giuffre said the picture is “authentic” and she gave the original to the FBI.

Maxwell faces eight charges after the fourth alleged victim was added.

Lebanese-Nigerian Billionaire and Two Associates Resolve Federal Probe into Alleged Violations of Campaign Finance Laws

LOS ANGELES – A Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire has resolved and two of his associates have agreed to resolve a federal investigation that they conspired to violate federal election laws by scheming to make illegal campaign contributions to U.S. presidential and congressional candidates, the Department of Justice announced today.

Gilbert Chagoury, 75, who presently resides in Paris, France, paid $1.8 million to resolve allegations that he, with the assistance of others, provided approximately $180,000 to individuals in the United States that was used to make contributions to four different federal political candidates in U.S. elections.

Chagoury, a foreign national prohibited by federal law from contributing to any U.S. elections, admitted he intended these funds to be used to make contributions to these candidates. He further admitted to making illegal conduit contributions – causing campaign contributions to be made in the name of another individual.

According to a deferred prosecution agreement with the government, Chagoury accepted responsibility for his role and conduct that resulted in violations of federal election contribution laws between June 2012 and March 2016 and agreed to cooperate with the government’s investigation. Chagoury entered into the agreement on October 19, 2019, and he paid the fine in December 2019.

Federal prosecutors entered into the deferred prosecution agreement considering, among other factors, Chagoury’s unique assistance to the U.S. government, his payment of a fine, Chagoury’s acceptance of responsibility for his actions, and his residence outside the United States.

Relatedly, two Chagoury associates – Joseph Arsan, 68, also of Paris, and Toufic Joseph Baaklini, 58, of Washington, D.C. – agreed to resolve allegations that they violated campaign contribution laws by assisting Chagoury in his illegal contributions. Arsan, a physician who worked as an assistant to Chagoury, admitted helping Chagoury reimburse others for contributions to political candidates. In 2014, Arsan – at Chagoury’s direction – wired $30,000 to a third party and indicated on the wire information form that the funds were for a “wedding gift,” when he knew or should have known that the funds were reimbursement for making a political contribution to a campaign fund for a federal elected official.

Arsan’s deferred prosecution agreement, which took effect in November 2020, also resolves a criminal investigation into his alleged tax violations in the years 2012 to 2016 stemming from his failure to report money he held in foreign bank accounts. Arsan agreed to pay $1.7 million in penalties to resolve the tax probe and to cooperate in the government’s investigation.

In his deferred prosecution agreement signed on March 1, 2021, Baaklini admitted to giving $30,000 in cash provided by Chagoury to an individual at a restaurant in Los Angeles who, along with others, later made campaign contributions to the 2016 campaign of a U.S. congressman. Baaklini also agreed to pay a $90,000 fine as part of his agreement and agreed to cooperate with the government’s investigation.

In a separate and unrelated matter, Ray LaHood, 75, who served as U.S. Secretary of Transportation from 2009 to 2013, paid a $40,000 fine to resolve a federal criminal investigation into LaHood’s conduct related to a $50,000 financial transaction between LaHood and Baaklini in June 2012.

LaHood, who at the time was suffering financial difficulties, admitted that in 2012 he accepted a $50,000 personal check from Baaklini – with the word “Loan” written in the check’s memo portion – and understood at the time that the money came from Chagoury. LaHood failed to disclose the $50,000 check on two government ethics forms as required because LaHood did not want to be associated with Chagoury. Later, LaHood also made misleading statements to FBI agents investigating Chagoury about the check and its source. As part of his non-prosecution agreement signed in December 2019, LaHood also agreed to cooperate with the government’s investigation and repaid the $50,000 to Baaklini.

This matter was investigated by the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.

These cases were prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Mack E. Jenkins, Chief of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section, and Aron Ketchel, also of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section.

Leader of Darknet Drug Distribution Conspiracy Sentenced to Federal Prison

PORTLAND, Ore.—The leader of and final defendant in a darknet drug distribution conspiracy was sentenced to federal prison today for his role in operating a narcotic vendor site that facilitated thousands of purchases of MDMA and generated nearly $200,000 in drug trafficking revenue, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Scott Erik Asphaug.

James Campbell Cardwell, 28, of Tigard, Oregon, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison and three years’ supervised release.

According to court documents, Cardwell operated a large MDMA darknet vendor site called “The Collective.” Cardwell, through The Collective, distributed nearly six kilograms of MDMA in one and ten-gram quantities. Cardwell oversaw and ran the operation from his Tigard residence. Cardwell’s three co-conspirators, Gordon Filemu Cady, 35, of Portland; Heidi Gravier, 31, of Portland; and Ruth Lacy Gloe, 38, of Salem, Oregon, conspired to import and possess with intent to distribute MDMA, ketamine and cocaine.

During a search of Cardwell’s residence in May 2018, investigators located drug packaging paraphernalia, numerous pills, digital scales, mailing envelopes, an unknown white powder, a grinder containing an unknown white powder, 11 baggies containing 21 grams of MDMA, $1,670 in cash, several cell phones and computers, and a loaded 9mm firearm. Based on a review of records seized, Cardwell was involved in more than 3,000 transactions generating more than $197,000.

In August 2018, following Cardwell’s arrest and while he was on pretrial supervision, federal agents learned he was attempting to sell the login credentials for two darknet vendor accounts that he had operated during the charged offense. Later, in November 2018, Cardwell arranged to purchase a counterfeit Canadian passport and British Columbia driver’s license so he could leave the country.

On June 26, 2018, Cardwell, Cady, Gravier, and Gloe were all indicted on drug trafficking offenses. By February 2021, all of Cardwell’s co-conspirators had pleaded guilty and been sentenced to time served in federal prison and three years’ supervised release.

This case was investigated by a HIDTA Interdiction Task Force comprised of Homeland Security Investigations and the Portland Police Bureau. It was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.

This case was brought as part of the Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. The Oregon HIDTA program was established by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in June of 1999. In 2015, the program expanded into Idaho and was renamed the Oregon-Idaho HIDTA. The Oregon-Idaho HIDTA consists of 14 counties and the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. Counties in the HIDTA include Oregon’s Clackamas, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Lane, Linn, Malheur, Marion, Multnomah, Umatilla and Washington counties, and Idaho’s Ada, Bannock and Canyon counties.

Yesterday, Katelyn Polantz and Evan Perez reported that investigators with Special Counsel John Durham’s office have used grand jury subpoenas “to gather documents in recent months” and “are now arranging witness interviews.”

Of course, if you’ve been following along, this isn’t breaking news. There is months-old reporting on Durham’s use of grand juries and Durham isn’t just “now arranging witness interviews.” As then-U.S. Attorney Durham stated in a December 9, 2019 press release response disputing IG Horowitz’s opinions on the predication of Crossfire Hurricane, he had already developed “information from other persons and entities, both in the U.S. and outside of the U.S.”:

Subsequent interviews and reporting provided further information on Durham’s activities. In June 2020, Barr told Maria Bartiromo that the COVID pandemic had delayed witness interviews and suggested, while maintaining deniability, that the suspension of grand juries in DC had slowed Durham’s progress.

In September 2020, Adam Goldman (and others) at the New York Times broke a story that Durham (just prior to appointment as special counsel) was looking into how federal law enforcement officials handled the investigation of allegations “of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation.”

This reporting raises an eyebrow when we look to Special Counsel Durham’s scope memo, which authorizes him to investigate “law-enforcement activities directed at the 2016 presidential campaigns.” Campaigns plural.

Later last fall, on October 7, 2020, Dexter Filkins with The New Yorker reported that Durham had summoned to testify to a grand jury “scientists and others” quoted in his story on the origins and investigation of communications between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank (Russia).

Filkins reported that Durham had even “asked” former Feinstein staffer Daniel Jones who has deep links to Fusion GPS to testify. (“Asked” is a curious phrasing - it’s unknown if there was a subpoena.) He added that some federal agents working for Durham told witnesses that they “were exploring a potential criminal charge . . . for giving false information to the government.”

When Language is Misleading

I provide background not only to summarize what we know about Durham’s investigation so far and to point out CNN’s deficiencies, but also to note how CNN reporters Polantz and Perez have framed their “reporting” in such a way as to diminish Durham’s appointment and progress:

For example, they state that Durham’s probe is is partly focused on the FBI’s “disclosures to the federal intelligence surveillance court.”

“Federal intelligence surveillance court”? The court calls itself the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC).

Durham investigating FBI “disclosures” to the FISC? That’s a strange word for a secret and sworn warrant and three subsequent renewals that require the utmost honesty from the DOJ and FBI. This happens when reporters have accurate words - like warrants and renewals - and need to find something less harmful to whatever agenda they’re promoting.

This is a regular problem with CNN - the use of vague language to downplay the truth. Today, the Bidens’ dog bit a National Park Service employee. CNN headline: “Bidens' dog Major involved in another biting incident”. This purposefully doesn’t get to the truth.

Dogs don’t have “biting incidents.” And what level of a biting “involvement” could a dog possibly have?

And why use the passive or vague where a simple “Biden Dog Bites Park Service Employee” is perfect? I think you know the answer…

Anyway, back to the Durham article. According to Polantz and Perez, Durham “putters along.”

This is a term typically reserved for people not doing much of anything. It becomes a derisive term when reporters use it to describe the Special Counsel. And it’s inaccurate when (1) you admit you’re ultimately clueless about Durham’s progress and (2) you cite sources who reference progress like grand jury subpoenas and interviews.

Chicago Consultant Charged With Federal Tax Offenses

CHICAGO — A Chicago consultant was indicted today on tax offenses for allegedly underreporting and failing to file federal income taxes.

ANNAZETTE COLLINS, also known as “Annazette Collins-Langston” and “Annazette Collins-Momon-Langston,” 58, of Chicago, is charged with two counts of willfully filing a false individual income tax return, two counts of willfully failing to file a corporate income tax return, and one count of willfully failing to file an individual income tax return. The indictment was returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Arraignment has not yet been scheduled.

The indictment was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Tamera Cantu, Acting Special Agent-in-Charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division in Chicago; and Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amarjeet S. Bhachu, Sarah E. Streicker, Diane MacArthur, Michelle Kramer, Matthew L. Kutcher, Timothy J. Chapman, and Julia Schwartz.

According to the indictment, Collins willfully filed a false individual tax return for the calendar years 2014 and 2015, and willfully failed to file an individual income tax return for the calendar year 2016. The indictment also accuses Collins of willfully failing to file a corporate income tax return for the calendar years 2015 and 2016 on behalf of her consulting and lobbying business, Chicago-based Kourtnie Nicole Corp.

The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Each felony count of filing a false individual income tax return is punishable by up to three years in federal prison. The misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file individual or corporate income tax returns each carry a maximum prison sentence of one year. If convicted, the Court must impose a reasonable sentence under federal statutes and the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

U.S. Attorney Letter Confirms Rep. Gaetz’s Version of Events in Bizarre ‘Sex Trafficking’ Story.

A statement from Assistant U.S. Attorney David Goldberg confirms Rep. Matt Gaetz’s claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigations was investigating extortion claims in response to a New York Times article accusing the congressman of sex trafficking.

In an email between Rep. Gaetz’s father’s lawyer and Goldberg, the Assistant U.S. Attorney confirms the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) involvement:

“I can confirm that your client is working with my office as well as the FBI at the government’s request in order to determine if a federal crime has been committed. This has been discussed with, and approved by, the FBI as well as the leadership of my office and components of Main Justice.”

The response followed a Gaetz family lawyer sending the following in a March 25th email:

In January 2003, Seymour Hersh reported in The New Yorker magazine that former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle had a meeting with Khashoggi in Marseille in order to use him as a conduit between Trireme Partners, a private venture capital company of which he was one of three principals, and the Saudi government. He continued to spend lavishly even when he encountered financial problems. His net worth was said to have been down to about 8 million in 1990. Due to his extravagant lifestyle, he was called the Great Gatsby of the Middle East.

Khashoggi also owned Ol Pejeta Conservancy, in Laikipia County, Kenya known at the time as the Mount Kenya Safari Club. His house has since been converted into a hotel which is run by Serena Hotels.

Khashoggi died on 6 June 2017 while being treated for Parkinson's disease at the St Thomas' Hospital in London. He was 81.

Microsoft Wins $22 Billion Contract To Supply US Military With Augmented-Reality Headsets

One year after beating out rivals like Amazon for the coveted Pentagon "JEDI" contract, a $10 billion mandate to rebuild the Pentagon's cloud-computing infrastructure (despite a lawsuit from Amazon alleging unfair discrimination in the awarding of the contract), Microsoft has just won another major DoD contract, this one worth potentially more than 2x the JEDI contract.

Microsoft shares climbed on the news that the company had won a contract to build more than 120,000 custom HoloLens augmented-reality headsets for the US Army. The contract could be worth up to $21.88BN over a 10-year stretch.

Investors celebrated the news likely because, according to CNBC, the deal shows Microsoft can generate meaningful revenue from a "futuristic product" like the HoloLens, which involved years of research, and also lies beyond the company's core competency area - software and its Windows operating system.

The mega-contract follows a much smaller contract worth $480MM Microsoft received to develop prototypes of the Integrated Visual Augmented System. The new contract is essentially an order to put that prototype into mass production.

Though it was widely panned when first release, the HoloLens (which costs $3,500) overlays a holographic interface over real-world environments, and allows users to interact using hand and voice gestures. For example, the headset can use thermal imaging to reveal enemy combatants hiding in the night.

It will also enable soldiers to fight and train using the same system.

"The IVAS headset, based on HoloLens and augmented by Microsoft Azure cloud services, delivers a platform that will keep soldiers safer and make them more effective," Alex Kipman, a technical fellow at Microsoft and the person who introduced the HoloLens in 2015, wrote in a blog post. "The program delivers enhanced situational awareness, enabling information sharing and decision-making in a variety of scenarios."

While Google parent Alphabet's employees do everything they can to stymie their employers' attempts to win lucrative contracts from the Department of Defense (GOOG's hyper-progressive employees have deemed working with the DoD "immoral", though they had little, if anything, to say about Google's efforts to break back into the Chinese market) Microsoft is apparently taking the opposite tack.

WASHINGTON - When Democrats marched down the Capitol steps earlier this week in support of judicial filibusters, the star of the political party, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, was only a follower.

The former first lady slipped on her sunglasses and stood near the back as congressional leaders took turns blasting Republicans for allegedly eroding minority party rights in their attempt to do away with Senate filibusters on judicial nominations.

Despite her national prominence, Clinton is keeping a low profile on filibusters, an intensely partisan issue that overshadowed other Senate business this week.

On Friday, Republicans set the final showdown in motion by calling for a vote next Tuesday to end judicial filibusters, using as a test case President Bush's nomination of Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Thoughts of higher office

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist , R-Tenn., reported to have presidential ambitions for 2008, is leading the effort to change Senate rules, a cause championed by conservatives who are the key constituency in the Republican primaries.

Presidential politics also may be a factor in Clinton's reserve, experts said, with the senator calculating that being too vocal on filibusters could hinder her recent efforts to moderate her image.

"For somebody who is spending a lot of time taking a slow walk to the middle, this is probably not an issue she felt she needed to take a stand on," said Jennifer Duffy, an expert on the Senate for the independent Cook Political Report.

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg suggested that Democrats may not want to put Clinton out front because she could become the focus of the filibuster debate rather than the Republicans.

Her involvement could draw attention to her husband's judicial record rather than Bush's nominees.

"The minute she opens her mouth on this issue she will get accused of simply advocating for her husband and problems he had getting through his judicial nominees," Duffy said. "That does not fit the image she wants of someone who is an independent senator in her own right."

Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said that "there is no strategy to keep her away" from the filibuster debate.

And Clinton's press secretary, Philippe Reines, said the senator has often discussed her opposition to eliminating the filibuster, including at a rally sponsored by the liberal group MoveOn.org and with Senate Democrats at the Jefferson Memorial several weeks ago.

As a Senator, Hillary Clinton voted to filibuster a bill to fully repeal the death tax, voting no on H.R. 8, the “Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2005.”

The legislation passed the House on a bipartisan vote of 272-162, however it was blocked by Clinton and her left wing allies in the Senate on a cloture vote of 57-41. Cloture rules in the Senate set a 60 vote threshold in order to break a filibuster (an attempt to block or delay) on a piece of legislation.

Studies by the Joint Economic Committee, and the Tax Foundation have found that the Death Tax hurts economic growth, discourages saving, and hinders small business entrepreneurship. In addition, compliance costs associated with the death tax are so burdensome that they are roughly equal to the amount of revenue raised – making this tax one of the most inefficient revenue sources in the nation.

Despite this tax falling on American small businesses and families, Hillary Clinton dismissed it as a “wealth tax.”

The 2005 vote was just one of many times Hillary Clinton voted to preserve the death tax. In 2001 she voted no on a series of tax cuts that increased the death tax exemption to $3.5 million. Clinton again voted no on legislation to increase the death tax exemption in 2006 and 2008.

I went to the link and I think it's bullshit for many reasons. I highlighted one of them. You may know of a few folks, especially elderly who died last year. Dannels details how the Mexican cartels, which he correctly labels transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), use their significant increases in human trafficking to cover for drug smuggling. He also talks passionately about the dangers of placing children in these criminal organizations’ care, which control the southern side of the border entirely. Dannels also believes the number of border crossers is grossly underestimated due to monitoring on the Arizona border:

In Cochise County, Arizona they have a sophisticated camera system along migrant routes across the border. These cameras detect significantly more traffic than our federal partners report capturing. In fact, our estimates are that only about 28% of the people crossing illegally are taken into custody. While the scope of the known crisis is enormous, we believe it may be underreported by close to 300%.

Leveling significant criticism at the Biden administration, Dannels notes:

Due to what we believe is misdirected policy from Washington, DC undocumented persons are being released into our communities. This is overloading our NGOs and nonprofits. Once released we have an affirmative responsibility to provide some standard of care for these people. Our local community resources are no longer able to provide social services to our own citizens. We have no meaningful assistance from the federal government. The appearance is of washing their hands of a mess they alone created and leaving it to border communities to struggle through. This is completely unacceptable.

Dannels’s assessment is similar to that of the mayor of Del Rio, Texas, who said his city’s resources are exhausted due to caring for migrants. This morning Sheriff Dannels spoke to Glenn Beck, and the situation has only gotten worse. Dannels, a 37-year veteran of law enforcement at the border, talked openly about the progress made during the Trump administration that President Biden dismantled. Dannels called President Biden’s executive order on immigration, signed on day one of his presidency, politically and ideologically driven.

“What he [President Biden] did that the first day, it sent a message to the cartels and those vulnerable people that hey, we’re coming across, we’re opening up the border. He stopped the construction on the border which stopped the perennial technology revenue, resources, and the physical barrier. My three checkpoints are shut down in my county. I’ve got a border patrol station shut down in my county for responding to help my deputies. I’ve got my aerostat shut down and I just learned Friday they removed me from the Homeland Security Council.”

Today, 11 October 2018, WikiLeaks publishes a "Highly Confidential" internal document from the cloud computing provider Amazon. The document from late 2015 lists the addresses and some operational details of over one hundred data centers spread across fifteen cities in nine countries. To accompany this document, WikiLeaks also created a map showing where Amazon’s data centers are located.

Amazon, which is the largest cloud provider, is notoriously secretive about the precise locations of its data centers. While a few are publicly tied to Amazon, this is the exception rather than the norm. More often, Amazon operates out of data centers owned by other companies with little indication that Amazon itself is based there too or runs its own data centers under less-identifiable subsidiaries such as VaData, Inc. In some cases, Amazon uses pseudonyms to obscure its presence. For example, at its IAD77 data center, the document states that “Amazon is known as ‘Vandalay Industries’ on badges and all correspondence with building manager”.

Amazon is the leading cloud provider for the United States intelligence community. In 2013, Amazon entered into a $600 million contract with the CIA to build a cloud for use by intelligence agencies working with information classified as Top Secret. Then, in 2017, Amazon announced the AWS Secret Region, which allows storage of data classified up to the Secret level by a broader range of agencies and companies. Amazon also operates a special GovCloud region for US Government agencies hosting unclassified information.

Currently, Amazon is one of the leading contenders for an up to $10 billion contract to build a private cloud for the Department of Defense. Amazon is one of the only companies with the certifications required to host classified data in the cloud. The Defense Department is looking for a single provider and other companies, including Oracle and IBM, have complained that the requirements unfairly favor Amazon. Bids on this contract are due tomorrow.

While one of the benefits of the cloud is the potential to increase reliability through geographic distribution of computing resources, cloud infrastructure is remarkably centralised in terms of legal control. Just a few companies and their subsidiaries run the majority of cloud computing infrastructure around the world. Of these, Amazon is the largest by far, with recent market research showing that Amazon accounts for 34% of the cloud infrastructure services market.

Until now, this cloud infrastructure controlled by Amazon was largely hidden, with only the general geographic regions of the data centers publicised. While Amazon’s cloud is comprised of physical locations, indications of the existence of these places are primarily buried in government records or made visible only when cloud infrastructure fails due to natural disasters or other problems in the physical world.

In the process of dispelling the mystery around the locations of Amazon’s data centers, WikiLeaks also turned this document into a puzzle game, the Quest of Random Clues. The goal of this game was to encourage people to research these data centers in a fun and intriguing way, while highlighting related issues such as contracts with the intelligence community, Amazon’s complex corporate structures, and the physicality of the cloud.
