Two British soldiers who were captured by Russian forces whilst fighting for Ukraine have now been sentenced to death.

Liz Truss, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, stated that she is "[d]eeply concerned by liquidation of Russian human rights group Memorial by courts. Memorial has worked tirelessly for decades to ensure abuses of Soviet era are never forgotten.”

“Its closure is another chilling blow to freedom of expression in Russia."

Liz Truss, back in February 2022, expressed on national television that she backs people who want to fight in Ukraine where she said that Ukrainians were fighting for freedom, "not for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe."

Ukraine's president Volodymir Zelensky urged foreign nationals to fight for Ukraine, as a quote on his website says, "[e]veryone who wants to join the defence of security in Europe and the world may come and stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians against the invaders of the 21st Century."

The two soldiers captured are 28-year-old Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, aged 48, who have been accused of being mercenaries a Russian news agency has said.

The two men were captured in Mariupol, before appearing in court in the DPR (Donetsk People's Republic) and have been issued the death sentence.

There was a third man, Saaudan Brahim who is a Morrocan national, that was also captured and also is now sentenced to death.

All three men were guilty of "mercenary activities and committing actions aimed at seizing power and overthrowing the constitutional order of the DPR."

Mr Aslin appeared in court behind a set of bars and said, "I was hoping the sentence would be a lot fairer judging the circumstances in which I helped the investigation and also because I surrendered to the Donetsk People's Republic. "

"I wish it could be different but God will be the one that will judge me when the time comes."

The spokesman for the prime minister said, "We've said, continually, that prisoners of war shouldn't be exploited for political purposes. You'll know that under the Geneva Convention, prisoners of war are entitled to combatant immunity, and they should not be prosecuted for participation in hostilities. So we will continue to work with Ukrainian authorities to try and secure the release of any British nationals who were serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and who are being held as prisoners of war."

Majority of UK’s 366 monkeypox cases are in London, says health agency

Almost 99% of people infected are men and the average age is 38 according to UK Health Security Agency data

Four-fifths of the people in England who have been infected with monkeypox live in London, an investigation by the UK Health Security Agency has found.

Of the cases interviewed, 99% of those infected are men and their average age is 38, the agency added after analysing 336 of the 366 confirmed cases found in the UK since the outbreak began last month.

The same overwhelming majority of cases – 99% – involve men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with other men, the UKHSA said. Interviews it has conducted with 45 men with monkeypox specifically about their sexual health found that 44% had visited “sex-on-premises venues” in the UK or abroad, such as saunas, sex clubs and dark rooms, while they were incubating the infection.

In addition, 64% had met new sexual partners during their incubation period through a dating app. Incubation lasts anywhere between five and 21 days.

Tracing all the sexual partners of men who have contracted monkeypox will be hard, the UKHSA admitted, as “most cases reported having sexual contact with new or casual partners … where contact details were unavailable for tracing”.

The UKHSA report is based on close scrutiny of the history of the 336 laboratory-confirmed cases that had been identified in the UK by 8 June, including detailed questionnaires that 152 cases filled in. That total rose to 366 on Friday.

“A high proportion of England cases were known to be London residents”, it said, adding that 224 of 276 people for whom they had a home address lived in the capital.

In terms of their sex, 311 of 314 confirmed cases were men, with three women. They ranged in age from 32 to 44.

“Findings show that monkeypox is being transmitted in geographically diffuse sexual networks”, the report added. Among the 45 interviewed 98% had had sex with other men during the incubation period. In that group 60% had been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection during the previous year, 44% had had more than ten sexual partners in the preceding three months and the same proportion had taken part in group sex while the infection was incubating.

“Sexual networks involved in this outbreak are interconnected both within and without the UK”, the UKHSA said. Among the 45 cases, 30% had had sex in a city outside their usual place of residence, 20% had taken part in sexual activity abroad and 24% had had sex with men who were not UK residents.

Health officials hope that sex-on-premises venues will agree to implement “targeted interventions [which] would support outbreak control”, to try to reduce the risk of further transmission of the monkeypox virus.

The agency’s “early evidence and preliminary analyses” also say that the number of detected cases so far means that the outbreak in England is at level 2 of four levels. That is defined as “transmission within a defined sub-population with high numbers of close contacts”.

However, with numbers rising, officials are monitoring it for signs that it has reached level 3 – “transmission within multiple sub-populations or larger sub-population”.

Third Unaoil bribery offender launches London appeal against conviction

LONDON (Reuters) - A third man jailed in Britain for bribery over oil deals in Iraq is appealing his conviction after two co-defendants had guilty verdicts quashed in the case prosecuted by the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

A lawyer for Stephen Whiteley, a 66-year-old former manager of Monaco-based energy consultancy Unaoil, said on Monday he believed his client's conviction was unsafe given that London's Court of Appeal had overturned the other two rulings.

In December, the Attorney General ordered a forensic review into SFO failings during the Unaoil case and a third successful appeal could pile more pressure on SFO Director Lisa Osofsky and rekindle a debate about the future of the agency.

The SFO, which combines investigatory and prosecutorial powers, is facing criticism over its handling of some high-profile cases, such as the collapse of a trial of former Serco executives because of failures in disclosure.

"We won't stop fighting serious fraud, bribery and corruption. Our investigation into Unaoil uncovered the payment of $17 million in bribes that were paid to win contracts worth $1.7 billion in Iraq. We are aware of Mr Whiteley's appeal and are considering our next steps," the SFO said in a statement.

Whiteley, sentenced to three years in jail in 2020, was one of three men convicted by jury after a four-year investigation into how Unaoil, once run by the prominent Ahsani family, helped major Western companies win energy projects in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa over two decades.

But in a major blow to the SFO, the Court of Appeal overturned the convictions of Whiteley's co-defendant Ziad Akle, a one-time Unaoil executive, and that of Paul Bond, a former manager at Dutch energy services firm SBM Offshore.

Senior judges said the SFO had refused to hand documents to the defence that showed "wholly inappropriate" contact between senior SFO officers and a U.S.-based fixer with vested interests, and that this had hindered defence lawyers.

"The quashing of Mr Akle's conviction, and now that of Mr Bond, due to the refusal of the SFO to disclose material to the defence, we believe also makes Mr Whiteley's conviction unsafe," said Sam Healey, a partner at JMW Solicitors, who is representing Whiteley.

Unaoil's former Iraq partner, Basil Al Jarah, is the fourth man jailed in the British part of a global investigation into Unaoil. He was sentenced to three years and four months in jail after pleading guilty in 2019 to bribery offences.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions and High Court judge David Calvert-Smith, appointed by the Attorney General to lead the review into SFO failings, had planned to present his report in late May.

But the Attorney General's office said on Monday there would be a one month delay and that it now hoped to update parliament on the findings and the government's response before July 21.

Lawmakers have periodically called for the SFO to be rolled into a broader crime-fighting force.

Ghislaine Maxwell will ask to be transferred to a British prison to serve the bulk of her sentence for child sex trafficking, The Mail on Sunday understands.

The former socialite, who faces up to 55 years in jail after being convicted of procuring young girls for the late paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, will be sentenced on June 28.

Under US law, she will have to spend the first three years in an American prison, but can then apply to return to the UK to be closer to her family.

"Ghislaine will apply to serve out the remainder of her sentence, whatever that may be, in the UK as soon as she is able," a source told The Mail on Sunday.

"She wants to be in the UK to be closer to her family so she can have family visits. The prisons in Britain are far superior to those in the US and the Brits treat prisoners more humanely. The American system is a disgrace."

"If she has to spend time in prison she would rather do it in the UK, where people are treated fairly and with a measure of decency."

Maxwell was convicted in December of five counts of grooming and procuring underage girls for Epstein, who was found hanged in his prison cell in 2019.

For almost two years since her arrest in July 2020, she had been kept in solitary confinement at the maximum-security Metropolitan Detention Center in New York, because officials feared she would kill herself before her trial, but last month she was moved into an area with 40 other inmates.

“Virtual children” are being proposed as a viable solution to overpopulation, according to a leading authority on artificial intelligence and a former United Kingdom government advisor.

Computer-generated babies that cost about $25 per month are likely to become a common phenomenon by the early-2070s argues Catriona Campbell, who advised the British government on the first drafting of its Usability & Accessibility standards. She claims up to one-in-five parents will opt for a digital baby.

Campbell expects that by 2070 augmented reality (AR) and haptic “touch-sensitive” gloves will make interactions with virtual babies feel “lifelike.”

She makes the predictions in her new book, AI by Design: A Plan For Living With Artificial Intelligence, where she outlines a potential “Netflix-type subscription service for as little as $25 per month” to allow people to raise virtual babies.

“Virtual children may seem like a giant leap from where we are now, but within 50 years technology will have advanced to such an extent that babies which exist in the metaverse are indistinct from those in the real world,” she said in a statement to the South West News Service (SWNS). “As the metaverse evolves, I can see virtual children becoming an accepted and fully embraced part of society in much of the developed world.

“This will lead to the first, fully digital demographic which, although somewhat strange on first appearance, in fact represents what could be one of mankind’s most important technological breakthroughs since the advent of the Bronze Age given its potential impact on global populations and societal change.”

Artificial intelligence has also been used to identify political dissidents in China, with many in the west fearing the potential for broad misuse of the program.

A former West Mercia police officer has been jailed for 20 weeks for sharing 10 memes about George Floyd in a WhatsApp group chat and charged with "sending grossly offensive messages".

The judge by the name of Tan Ikram said, "You were a prison officer. I have no doubt you would have received training in relation to diversity and inclusion in that role.”

“You undermined the confidence the public has in the police. Your behavior brings the criminal justice system as a whole into disrepute. You are there to protect the public and enforce the law. But what you did was the complete opposite."

The person who made a complaint about James Watt, left the group chat and posted screenshots on Twitter with the caption: "Former work colleague now serving police officer sent these in group chat. What hope is there in police in the UK sharing these."

When James' phone was seized for an investigation, it was revealed that James sent "grossly offensive" memes to multiple whatsapp groups and through Meta’s Messenger.

Watts was ordered to pay the complainant £75 compensation along with a £115 in court costs and a £128 victim surcharge.

Judge Ikram decided to dismiss the idea of a suspended sentence where he said "A message must go out and that message can only go out through an immediate sentence of imprisonment."

A silent heart condition is predicted to kill 40,000 Brits over the next five years.

Hundreds of thousands of over-55s are living with aortic valve stenosis (AVS) but new analysis suggests the NHS will be unable to diagnose and treat it, reports the Mirror.

Without treatment up to 59% of these Brits will die over the five years to 2024. Around 10,000 of these deaths will be among 55 to 64-year-olds, with 29,548 among 65 to 74-year-olds.

Previous analysis suggests that without symptoms, the chance of a sudden cardiac death is less than 1%. Once symptoms develop the risk goes up to 34%.

This may be the scandal to bring Boris Johnson's government down.

The wife of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Carrie (neé Symonds), faces further scandal after allegedly demanding negative press stories about her and her husband were removed from British newspapers and their websites. The news comes at one of the worst periods for Johnson’s government, with immigration soaring and a recent “no confidence” vote in the Prime Minister which yielded a worse result than his deposed predecessor Theresa May.

On Saturday morning, The Times of London ran with a bombshell scoop by veteran reporter Simon Walters, entitled “Johnson tried to give Carrie top Foreign Office job during affair”.

The story alleged that during their extra-marital, undisputed affair, Boris Johnson (then Foreign Secretary) attempted to give his lover, Carrie, a six-figure job in the same Foreign and Commonwealth Office that he ran, the U.S. equivalent of the State Department. The ‘Chief of Staff’ role would have come with significant access to sensitive government information, as well as the ability to set policy at a high-level. The move was vetoed by staff who were aware of the pair’s affair, and how it might compromise one of the most senior diplomats in the United Kingdom as a result, Walters alleged in his article.

But within hours the article had been removed from The Times, the Daily Mail, and MSN.com amongst others. Even the secondary print edition of The Times had replaced the story with a pro-government article about immigration policy.

Strangely still, neither papers issued corrections, retractions, notes from editors, or otherwise explanations about what had happened. The story just disappeared from the press, all at once – in an unprecedented fashion.

Former Times reporter David Hewson noted on Twitter: “As someone who reporting for the Times got things wrong once or twice let me tell you what happens. We publish a correction. We don’t pretend the original story never happened. And the idea of deleting it entirely from the public record. Well…”

A young British man who had his genitals removed during gender reassignment surgery is suing the NHS over the operation in a historic legal action.

He complains that doctors did not warn him of the drastic outcome of the body-altering surgery which has left him infertile, incontinent and feeling like a ‘sexual eunuch’.

He said on Twitter yesterday: ‘The minute I woke up from surgery, I knew I had made the biggest mistake of my life.’

Campaigners say that it is the first medical negligence case over NHS transgender care in this country. The NHS trust involved has not been named.

Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of Transgender Trend, a group advising parents on transgender children and young adults, said: ‘It is hoped this will force a re-think by the NHS about this kind of barbaric surgery on patients who are told by medics it will help them.

‘He has a very real case for compensation against the heath service. We believe he has suffered harm.’

His case has been taken on by lawyers in Liverpool. It centres on whether the NHS and its gender clinics adequately counselled him before the operation five years ago. The patient, in his thirties, was brought up in the North of England and has de-transitioned from being a woman to live as a man again.

The man says he is gay and his sexuality should have been discussed before the radical, irreversible gender surgery. ‘I have been castrated. That is the correct term,’ he says on his Twitter feed, which has 19,000 followers.

‘I cannot believe they [the NHS] were allowed to do this to me.

Two people charged with conspiracy offences linked to allegations of organ harvesting

A woman and a man were charged today (Thursday, 23 June) with conspiring to arrange the travel of a child into the UK in order to harvest organs.

The charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime team.

[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

They appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on the same day where they were remanded in custody to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 7 July.

The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support.

As criminal proceedings are now under way we will not be providing further details.
