Out-to-lunch Joe Biden has the worst G7 summit since Jimmy Carter

This week’s G-7 meeting in Germany brings to mind the apocryphal Mark Twain quip that “History doesn’t repeat itself — but it rhymes.” Or swap out if you like Santayana’s familiar (and authentic) axiom: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

This G-7 has to be judged the worst G-7 meeting since the one in Japan in 1979 that also took place amid a global energy crisis and rising inflation. The other factor these two summits, 43 years apart, have in common: an out-to-lunch American president.

Both the 1979 meeting and this week’s meeting attempted to create an oil buyers’ cartel to limit oil imports but with opposite targets in mind. In 1979, the G-7 wanted to limit imports from the Middle East (the attempt failed immediately). Today the G-7 wants to limit imports from Russia (through the indirect means of a “price cap” that amounts to the same thing as a quota) while begging the Middle East, and especially the dominant producer Saudi Arabia, to increase oil exports to the West.

As in 1979, when the other G-7 leaders were harsh toward President Jimmy Carter at the summit, this week France’s Emmanuel Macron tried gently to talk sense into President Biden, who seems to be trying to emulate all of Carter’s policy mistakes. On the eve of Biden’s trip to Saudi Arabia to grovel for more oil production, Macron advised him that the Saudis and other top Persian Gulf producers are close to current maximum capacity and as such aren’t able to bail out Biden even if they wanted to.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan intervened to spare Biden what was about to become a public embarrassment, since the subtext of Macron’s advice was that the United States needs to get its act together, starting with looking to our own oil resources for relief.

France, it should be noted, is serious about energy, unlike its neighbor Germany, which faces the real risk of running out of natural gas next winter. Unlike Biden, France’s government doesn’t make demagogic attacks on its giant oil companies and recently announced its intention to build a new generation of nuclear power plants.

While Biden is no doubt sincere in his wish that the G-7 unite behind tougher sanctions and boycotts of Russian energy, he appears oblivious to the fact that Europe is looking for a face-saving way to ease existing sanctions that threaten to harm their own economies more than Russia’s.

Another parallel between Biden’s position and the dismal Carter years: Saudi Arabia has good reason to be deeply unhappy with the United States both times. In 1979, Saudi Arabia was enraged that the United States sat back during — even encouraged — the fall of the shah in Iran, thus handing over Iran to radical Islamists who have destabilized the Middle East ever since.

The Saudis resent Biden calling them moral monsters one day and coming begging for more oil at a lower price the next day, while reopening the futile negotiations with Iran that will have only one outcome — a nuclear-armed Iran.

The Saudis always set their oil policy with Saudi self-interest in mind and will do so again now, though they may enjoy the spectacle of another foolish American president bowing and scraping before them. They might even long for the good old days of Jimmy Carter, as sometimes it seems to be Biden’s project to make Carter look good by comparison.

CNN suffers biggest ratings dip in SEVEN YEARS: Viewers plummet 13% in June in largest freefall since 2015 despite new CEO Chris Licht vowing to turn the network away from 'extremes'

The network, promised by Licht to 'go a different way' during a time 'where extremes are dominating cable news' appear to still be in the tank

Despite the hearings, which drew tens of millions of viewers across multiple networks, CNN actually had fewer viewers in June than it did in May

CNN drew an average of just 654,000 viewers in primetime in June and 487,000 for the entire newsday, down one and three percent respectively

During the committee hearings week of June 13-19, the network averaged just 480,000 viewers, the network's worst ratings week since November 2015

Overall, June 2022 was the lowest-rated month for 24-hour viewership on CNN since July 2015

By contrast, MSNBC - which had the highest ratings for the hearings on cable - averaged 1.28million viewers in primetime, up 26 percent from May

Fox News also had a better second quarter than they did in 2021

During the committee hearings week of June 13-19, the network averaged just 480,000 viewers, the network's worst ratings week since November 2015 and down 13 percent from those May averages.

For the final year of Trump's presidency, CNN brought in an average of 1.79 million total viewers in primetime but the network had lost over half of that viewership by the end of 2021.

It continues a dreadful year for the network in the wake of its expensive flop CNN+ streaming service.

Licht has attempted to course correct what he sees as problems for the network's credibility after his predecessor Jeff Zucker was ousted.

He has ordered staff to stop using the phrase 'the big lie' to describe Donald Trump's 2020 election fraud claims, as it's a Democrat slogan.

The wording is a popular one for the network. According to Mediaite, the phrase has been said 168 times in the first half of June alone.

During the committee hearings week of June 13-19, the network averaged just 480,000 viewers, the network's worst ratings week since November 2015 and down 13 percent from those May averages.

Overall, June 2022 was the lowest-rated month for 24-hour viewership on CNN since July 2015, according to The Daily Beast.

Poll: Blake Masters Takes Commanding 14 Point Lead in Arizona Senate Race

Blake Masters has a double-digit lead over his opponents in Arizona’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate, a poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows.

The poll, released Wednesday, asked: “The Republican candidates for US Senate include Mark Brnovich, Jim Lamon, Blake Masters, and Michael McGuire. If the election was today, who would you vote for?”

Masters, – President of the Thiel Foundation named for its founder, billionaire Peter Thiel – drew 29 percent of poll participants’ support, placing him 14 points ahead of Brnovich, who garnered 15 percent. Ten percent of respondents selected Lamon, while five percent chose McGuire. A large portion of respondents (41 percent) remained “undecided.”

Masters secured former President Donald J. Trump’s endorsement earlier this month, and Trump doubled down on his support of the candidate in a video released by Masters’ campaign Monday. A Trafalgar Group poll, published soon after Trump’s endorsement, showed Masters had secured the top spot among the primary field, up 9.5 percentage points from an April Trafalgar poll that listed him in third place. The latest PPP shows both Brnovich and Lamon have lost ground compared to this month’s Trafalgar poll.

When participants in the PPP poll were asked if Trump’s endorsement had any bearing on their vote, 53 percent of respondents said they were either “much more likely,” or “somewhat more likely” to cast their ballots for Masters. Another 20 percent said they were less likely – in varying degrees – to vote for Masters, and 24 percent said it made no difference.

The poll also gauged the candidates’ favorability rating among voters, with Masters having the highest rating among the field at 39 percent, with another 42 percent unsure if they viewed him favorably or unfavorably. Brnovich faired second best, with 28 percent having a positive view of him and another 48 percent unsure of how they perceived him. In comparison, Lamon’s favorability rating registered at 21 percent, with 55 percent unsure. Ten percent viewed McGuire in a positive light, while another 80 percent did not have a view one way or another.

PPP also found that 75 percent have a favorable view of Trump, while just 18 percent do not.

The poll surveyed 595 likely voters in the Republican primary on June 28. A margin of error was not specified.

Trump-Endorsed Harriet Hageman Slams Liz Cheney as ‘Obsessed’ with January 6, Ignoring Wyoming

Wyoming Republican primary candidate Harriet Hageman on Thursday night’s debate stage slammed opponent Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) for being “obsessed” with the partisan January 6 Committee while failing to address relevant issues to Wyoming.

Referencing Cheney’s deep participation in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) committee, Hageman said on stage that “the press and certain people have obsessed over January 6.”

“The only time that the January 6 situation ever comes up is when people talk about how unfair this entire committee is,” Hageman said about her 30,000 miles of campaign travel through Wyoming. She continually “focuses an awful lot of time on the January 6 committee, but she’s not addressing the issues that are important to Wyoming.”

“I’m the only real proven success up here on this stage. I have been fighting the issues for Wyoming for over 25 years,” Hageman said.

During the January 6 Committee’s hearings, Cheney has fallen in the polls, trailing far behind Hageman. In one poll, Hageman leads Cheney by 28 points. In another, she leads by 30 points.

Hageman has consistently highlighted Cheney’s absence from Wyoming to lead House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s committee by labeling Cheney a “DC diva” who is “using her seat as Wyoming’s representative to pursue her own agenda” on the partisan January 6 committee.

“That’s not our agenda. We don’t agree with what Liz Cheney is doing,” Hageman said in April about Cheney’s participation.

According to the New York Times, Cheney is rarely seen in Wyoming and has even charged Wyoming residents $10 for admission to a campaign event, Politico reported about a gathering at Jackson’s Center for the Arts. At the event, Cheney reportedly only answered pre-selected questions from Wyoming voters.

Cheney has fought back against Hageman by asking Democrats for their votes, sending direct mailers to Wyoming Democrats. She has requested Democrats change parties to be eligible to vote in the open Republican primary.

Cheney’s direct mailing scheme is a flip-flop from what she told the Times in February. “That is not something that I have contemplated, that I have organized, or that I will organize,” Cheney said about soliciting Democrat votes.

Cheney is in hot water for opposing Trump and his policies, voting to impeach the former president, and allying herself with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) January 6 Committee, which has sought to investigate the January 6 incident without focusing on the alleged FBI informants at the Capitol.

Cheney’s conduct has drawn condemnation from the Wyoming Republican Party and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. After the Wyoming GOP voted to no longer recognize her as a Republican in November, in February, McCarthy announced his endorsement of Hageman to defeat Cheney, a rare move for a minority leader.

“Liz Cheney has lost Wyoming. Liz Cheney doesn’t live in Wyoming. She doesn’t represent us,” Hageman told Breitbart News. “She doesn’t represent our values.”
