“I can’t remember a time when Cossacks were led by people who have never held a sword in their hands,” Zakharchenko told a press conference in the eastern rebel stronghold of Donetsk, in a reference to Ukraine’s nationalist forebears, the Cossacks.

Zakharchenko said that the country’s historical nationalists “would turn in their graves if they could see who is running Ukraine.”

Anti-Semitic sentiment remains widespread in Ukraine, where leaders are commonly labelled as Jewish by those seeking to discredit them.

"Additional officers from the Gadsden Police Department responded to the scene to provide assistance. The subject was injured by gunfire and was pronounced deceased," ALEA said.

 

Special agents with the State Bureau of Investigation will turn the finding of their investigation over to the district attorney's office.

 

The public became aware quickly that something was going on. Gadsden-Etowah County Emergency Management Agency advised people in Facebook posts about 10 a.m. to avoid the area because of an "ongoing police incident." The Etowah County Sheriff's Office sent out an alert at 10:03 a.m. and it was shared by the Walnut Park Community Watch program.

 

All children at the school were reported safe. In addition to the literacy camp students, about 22 children in a Parks and Recreation summer camp were also on the campus. School students were taken by bus to Gadsden City High School. Reddick estimated they were reunited with parents in about 20 minutes' time.

 

"The students didn't have a clue," Reddick said, about the incident. They were in another part of the building, and Principal Alison Correll kept curious staff members away from the area where the incident occurred. He said one teacher might have witnessed some of the confrontation.

 

Reddick said the school system contacted a parent of each child in the literacy camp. He said the system will be looking at what to do to continue the camp.

 

For the time being, it won't be at Walnut Park, he said, to allow law enforcement to freely investigate.

 

The school had prepared physically for such incidents, with door locks, cameras and staff training about keeping unauthorized people out, Reddick said. The staffs and students are trained in how to respond. He said these students had been safety training already this week.

 

"They were actually excited about exercising what they had learned," the superintendent said.

 

Horton said the staff and law enforcement officers responded perfectly to the situation. Still, as good as the response was, he said it will be studied to see if there are ways it could have been better.

On Thursday, China called on the US to stop trade talks with Taiwan after Washington and Taipei announced a new initiative aimed at increasing economic cooperation.

 

The US and Taiwan announced the initiative on Wednesday, which marked the formal start of trade negotiations. Taiwan’s trade representative, John Deng, will head to Washington next month for the talks.

 

Deng said the initiative cover 11 areas, including “trade facilitation, regulatory practices, agriculture, anti-corruption, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, digital trade, labor rights, the environment, standards, state-owned enterprises, and non-market practices and policies.”

 

The trade talks are the latest example of the US taking steps to boost informal relations with Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the US should “stop negotiating agreements with implications of sovereignty and of official nature, and refrain from sending any wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

 

Zhao also called on the US to stop selling weapons to Taiwan in response to comments from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The Pentagon chief said the US “will make available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable it to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability commensurate with the Chinese threat.”

 

Since severing diplomatic relations with Taipei in 1979, the US has sold arms to the island, but the US is looking for other ways to support Taiwan militarily. Earlier this week, Taiwanese President Tsai ing-Wen said that Washington is planning to increase “cooperation” between the US National Guard and the US military.

Indonesia President to meet with Putin, Zelensky to urge peace talks

 

Indonesian President and G20 chairman Joko Widodo took off on Sunday to Europe with plans on visiting Russia and Ukraine to meet with the countries' leaders to push for peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.

 

Widodo is set to visit Germany from June 26 to 27 as a guest for the G7 summit, and he will then go to Ukraine to visit President Volodymyr Zelensky.

 

"The mission is to ask… President Zelensky to open a dialogue forum for peace - to build peace because the war has to be stopped," he told a press conference in Jakarta before leaving for Berlin.

 

The G7 countries had held their last meeting in Germany last month, where they discussed the Ukraine war, China, and the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, Afghanistan, Africa, and West Asia.

 

Widodo said he will also discuss with Zelensky the food supply chain that "needs to be reactivated soon." Upon finishing his visit to Kiev, Widodo is scheduled to head for Moscow and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

 

Indonesian authorities said earlier that Widodo's visit to Moscow is planned for June 30.

 

"With the same mission, I will ask President Putin to open a dialogue, to immediately have a ceasefire, and to stop the war," he said. Widodo announced in April that he had called Zelensky and invited him to join world leaders at the November G20 Summit in Bali as a guest.

 

Indonesia holds the rotating presidency of the G20 this year, and it is under mounting pressure from the West, mainly the United States, to exclude Russia from the meeting in a bid by Washington to further undermine Moscow's significant role in the international arena.

 

Jakarta, however, has tried to maintain a neutral position regarding Russia and Ukraine, calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has been unfolding for months now.

 

Despite Indonesia's position, Widodo refused to send weapons to Ukraine in response to requests from Zelensky, instead offering humanitarian aid to Kiev.

 

President Widodo's trip will see him going to Berlin, Kiev, and Moscow, in that order. He will then visit the United Arab Emirates before going back home to Indonesia.

 

Zelensky has asked almost every country in the world to send arms to his country, and though many, like Germany, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom were happy to grant him his wishes, numerous states have adhered to their neutrality on the war, only sending humanitarian aid and calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi emphasized the significance of stopping the fighting in Ukraine as soon as possible and reiterated the Islamic Republic's willingness to assist in resolving the issue diplomatically.

 

Raisi warned against attempts to expand the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) influence in various parts of the world during a meeting with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran on Wednesday, blaming the US and the military alliance that it leads as the root cause of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Ukraine conflict has heightened tensions between Russia and the West, with the US and its NATO allies slapping unprecedented sanctions on Moscow and supplying Ukraine with a vast cache of weapons.

 

Raisi further emphasized the necessity of collaboration among Caspian Sea littoral states and stated that foreign powers are not permitted to establish a military presence in this region.

 

He stated that the frequent meetings and conversations between Iranian and Russian officials demonstrate the two countries' unwavering willingness to begin a new chapter of successful and strategic collaboration, notably in the economic sector.

 

Raisi expressed that “Strengthening cooperation and coordination is an effective way to counter US sanctions and economic unilateralism against independent nations.”

 

Both Tehran and Moscow have massive oil and gas reserves but are limited in their capacity to export their products due to unilateral Western sanctions.

 

On Thursday, Lavrov will meet with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, according to the official news agency IRNA.

 

Russia has faced a massive Western campaign of sanctions since the war in Ukraine began, whereas Iran's economy has been battered by harsh sanctions reimposed by the US in 2018, following Washington's unilateral abrupt withdrawal from the nuclear deal reached between Tehran and international nations.

 

The Russian foreign minister emphasized the relevance of Iran's participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, adding that his country supports Tehran's engagement in regional and international organizations.

TikTok confirmed that China-based employees of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, have access to US user data under certain circumstances in a letter obtained by The New York Times responding to nine Republican senators' inquiries about the matter.

 

"Employees outside the US, including China-based employees, can have access to TikTok US user data subject to a series of robust cybersecurity controls and authorization approval protocols overseen by our US-based security team," TikTok's CEO Shou Zi Chew wrote in the letter.

 

"TikTok has an internal data classification system and approval process in place that assigns levels of access based on the data's classification and requires approvals for access to US user data," Chew added. "The level of approval required is based on the sensitivity of the data according to the classification system."

 

Sal Rodriguez, who is currently a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, first reported for CNBC last year that ByteDance had access to US data and was closely involved in making decisions for TikTok.

 

A new light was shined on the privacy and security concerns after BuzzFeed News recently reported, based on audio of internal meetings it obtained, that ByteDance employees had repeatedly accessed US user data over at least a four-month period, and that US-based employees did not have permission to access it.

 

In a statement to BuzzFeed News for its report, a TikTok spokesperson said, in part: "We know we're among the most scrutinized platforms from a security standpoint, and we aim to remove any doubt about the security of US user data."

 

On the same day BuzzFeed News published its story, TikTok announced that "100% of US user traffic is being routed to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure," rather than being stored in its own data centers in the US and Singapore.

According to a report from CNBC, Buche added, “The pandemic and now the steep increases in food and energy prices have, simply put, been a bonanza for them.”

 

“Meanwhile, decades of progress on extreme poverty are now in reverse and millions of people are facing impossible rises in the cost of simply staying alive,” Bucher said.

 

Bucher also mentioned that Covid has been one of the most profitable products.

 

“Billionaires has been, you know, unprecedented during the pandemic. And there’s been several sectors where that has been mostly concentrated. And one is, in fact, the pharma sectors, because Covid has been one of the most profitable products ever. So that’s one point to discuss in our report,” Bucher said.

The bill, passed by the Japanese government on Monday, has amended the country’s penal code and will take effect this summer.

 

According to the Japan Times, the amendment comes as a response to the death of professional wrestler and Netflix’s Terrance House reality star Hana Kimura.

 

Kimura, 22, died by suicide in 2020. News of her death was spread nationwide, with many Japanese citizens pointing to the ample online abuse and harassment Kimura received in the months before her death.

 

Offenders who post “online insults” can now be punished under the law with up to one year of jailtime, or fined ¥300,000 (approximately $2,870).

Prior to this legislation, insults were still illegal, though the punishment was lesser, with offenders earning fewer than 30 days detention and a fine of ¥10,000 (approximately $95).

 

According to CNN, under Japan’s penal code, insults “are defined as publicly demeaning someone’s social standing without referring to specific facts about them or a specific action.”

 

Insults differ from defamation in Japan, the distinguishing factor being that defamation must include specific facts when publicly demeaning another person. Defamation is also punishable under Japanese law.

 

The degree to which an insult will be punished under the new law has yet to be determined.

 

Regardless, opponents of the legislation have argued that the bill could impede free speech. Many critics wondered if the bill will also apply to criticism of those in power, like government officials and political leaders.

 

For this reason, the legislation was passed with a provision making it necessary to reevaluate the bill after three years in effect to determine its impact, if any, on free speech in Japan.

 

The Japan Times reported that following Kimura’s death, two men in Osaka and Fukui prefectures were fined ¥9,000 each (approximately $86) for posting online insults about the celebrity. Pennsylvania principal faces 30 felony sex charges for relationship with student

 

A Pennsylvania high school principal was arrested and faces more than 30 felony sex charges for an inappropriate sexual relationship he had with a male student over a seven-year period.

 

Roger Weaver Freed, 34, was charged Tuesday with 30 counts of indecent sexual contact with a student, one count of sexual assault, one count of aggravated indecent assault, one count of corruption of a minor and three misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to court records.

 

Police said Freed began a relationship with the student, who is now college-age, in 2015 when the boy was in middle school. The relationship turned sexual two years later and continued after the student graduated high school up until a few months ago — when it ended in April, according to an affidavit.

 

The student told investigators that he first grew close to Freed after the death of a family member. He began to lean on the educator for emotional support and said “he trusted Free ‘like an older brother,'” the document states.

 

Their relationship soon grew to time outside of school, with Freed volunteering to give the student rides to various locations so they could have “one-on-one conversations.”

 

The student said he considered the educator and himself to be “bros” and said they could talk about anything, including his sexuality. They routinely texted, called and FaceTimed one another, police said.

 

In 2017, Freed and the student’s relationship became sexual and the principal asked the boy to promise not to tell anyone, stressing that he could lose his job.

Canberra (ACT) to decriminalise small amount of drugs

 

The ACT government will support a private members bill to decriminalise small amounts of illicit drugs including cocaine, heroin and MDMA.

 

The bill gives police the ability to fine someone caught in possession of illegal drugs rather than divert them through the criminal justice system, where they currently face up to two years in jail for the offence.

 

A person could also choose to attend a drug diversion program as opposed to facing the $100 fine.

 

It follows the decriminalisation of cannabis for personal use in 2019.

 

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith says support of the bill followed an ACT Legislative Assembly committee recommending it be passed with amendments to ensure it met the government's harm reduction policy.

 

Trafficking offences will not be changed under the bill.

 

"Illicit drugs are harmful and the ACT government will continue to take a strong stance against drug dealers. This bill does not change that view," Ms Stephen-Smith says.

 

"The government and ACT Policing will continue to work to reduce supply and prosecute dealers and traffickers through the justice system."

 

Government amendments will remove methodone, which is regulated as a pharmaceutical drug, and will move the list of drugs to regulation so the government can "ensure flexibility in responding to changes in the market".

 

Ms Stephen-Smith said evidence showed criminalising drug use doesn't reduce drug use, and that substance abuse needed to be treated as a health issue.

 

"Treating drug addiction as a health issue improves outcomes for everyone in the community," she said.

 

"The government will ensure through amendments that the principle of harm reduction is front and centre of our approach to this change."

 

Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson introduced the private members bill at the start of 2021 before it was sent to the committee.

 

The committee subsequently recommended the bill pass the ACT's unicameral Assembly, which is controlled by a Labor-Greens coalition government.

 

ACT Policing previously raised concerns that the quantity of drugs listed exceeded personal use and could be considered a trafficable quantity.

 

Mr Pettersson says the limits in the bill are below the Commonwealth's drug trafficking threshold, which is more stringent than the ACT's.

 

The thresholds in the bill include 0.5-grams of MDMA; 50-grams of dried cannabis; two grams of cocaine; two grams of heroin; two grams of methylamphetamine; two grams of psilocybine (found in mushrooms); and 0.002-grams of LSD.

 

The ACT government has also proposed a 12-month implementation period.

For years now, the government has been bombarding the citizenry with propaganda campaigns and psychological operations aimed at keeping us compliant, easily controlled and supportive of the police state’s various efforts abroad and domestically.

 

The government is so confident in its Orwellian powers of manipulation that it’s taken to bragging about them. Just recently, for example, the U.S. Army’s 4th Psychological Operations Group, the branch of the military responsible for psychological warfare, released a recruiting video that touts its efforts to pull the strings, turn everything they touch into a weapon, be everywhere, deceive, persuade, change, influence, and inspire.

 

This is the danger that lurks in plain sight.

 

Of the many weapons in the government’s vast arsenal, psychological warfare may be the most devastating in terms of the long-term consequences.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is on the warpath against billionaire George Soros.

Soros, a liberal donor and activist, just helped fund a left-wing radio network targeting Hispanic-Americans, Fox News reported.

DeSantis said in a statement to the outlet that the Hungarian-born businessman is trying to “manipulate” the media landscape in his state and push a “Marxist agenda on voters.”

So the Republican governor’s re-election campaign is hitting back at Soros.

By buying an ad on two Miami radio stations that are part of this new left-leaning radio network, DeSantis is warning voters about the media purchase and “leftist disinformation” as he continues the “fight against socialism in America,” his campaign said.

“Governor Ron DeSantis is taking [on] Soros on his own turf with a Spanish language ad buy on the Soros network, serving as a PSA to Hispanic Floridians to warn of the pro-socialism, radical agenda behind The Latino Media Network,” the DeSantis campaign told Fox News.

The Latino Media Network will be made up of 18 Hispanic radio stations in Florida and elsewhere. Those include WAQI-AM and WQBA-AM in Miami.

This new network was announced on Friday and was partially financed by Lakestar Finance, an investment group affiliated with Soros Fund Management.

Left-wing activists and entrepreneurs Jess Morales Rocketto and Stephanie Valencia are at the head of the network formation and raised $80 million to launch it, Axios reported.

Rocketto is an “alumna of Hillary for America, the AFL-CIO, Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee, Rebuild the Dream, and the New Organizing Institute,” according to the Ash Center at Harvard’s Kennedy School.

Valencia was a White House staffer during the Barack Obama administration, Fox News reported.

Rocketto and Valencia expect the network to give them “access to one-third of the Hispanic population.”

But DeSantis’ ads are trying to hit back against any left-wing propaganda that might come on the radio stations in this new network.

“Warning, voters! The left is taking control of our local media. Billionaire George Soros, known for financing extreme leftist causes, is now financing the purchase of Hispanic radio stations right here in Miami,” the translated version of the DeSantis ad says, Fox News reported.

Democrat Louisiana Judge Blocks State Trigger Law Banning Abortion

 

A Democrat judge has temporarily blocked Louisiana’s trigger law banning abortion from going into effect.

 

Judge Robin Giarrusso of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court issued an order temporarily halting the law after abortion providers in the state filed a lawsuit.

 

The law was written so that if Roe v. Wade was overturned, virtually all abortions in the state would be immediately banned, unless the mother is at risk of death or permanent injury.

 

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry tweeted on Friday that “Louisiana’s trigger law banning #abortion is now in effect.”

 

Abortion providers represented by Center for Reproductive Rights argued that “the abortion restrictions violate providers’ due process rights and ‘lack constitutionally required safeguards to prevent arbitrary enforcement,'” according to a report from Fox News.

 

They also claimed the laws were vague and did not set a specific start time for the law to be applied.

 

The judge will hold a hearing on the case July 8 and determine if the law will remain blocked.

 

“A public health emergency is about to engulf the nation. As expected, Louisiana and many other states wasted no time enacting bans and eliminating abortion entirely,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement obtained by Axios.

 

“People who need an abortion right now are in a state of panic. We will be fighting to restore access in Louisiana and other states for as long as we can. Every day that a clinic is open and providing abortion services can make a difference in a person’s life,” Northup continued.

 

AG Landry has vowed to keep fighting.

 

For now, abortions will remain legal in the state.

Department of Justice Stymies Congressional Attempt to Get Information on Hunter Biden Probe

 

The Department of Justice (DOJ) headquarters has intervened in a congressional effort to get details on the agency’s probe into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

 

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), a member of the panel, in May asked U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, who is investigating Hunter Biden, for answers because attempts to get information from the DOJ have met with silence or little information.

 

Grassley and Johnson expressed concerns over conflicts of interest, including noting that Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicholas McQuaid was a partner with an attorney that has represented Hunter Biden.

 

They also pointed to information they said indicates that the Biden family may have “undue influence” over judicial officers in Delaware.

 

They asked for details such as how many employees under Weiss have recused from the Hunter Biden probe, which involves the younger Biden’s business dealings with China among other areas.

 

Instead of hearing from the office of Weiss, a Trump appointee, the lawmakers received a letter (pdf) dated June 9 sent by Peter Hyun, who is the acting assistant attorney general and is based in Washington.

 

Hyun noted he was responding to the senators’ letter to Weiss.

 

Hyun said the DOJ has previously outlined the agency’s policies with regards to ethics and recusal protocols.

 

“While the Department appreciates your interest in this matter, consistent with its policies, it will not be able to provide you with any further information regarding Department officials’ employment or specific recusal decisions,” he said.

 

“With respect to your remaining inquiries, while the Department strives to provide Congress with as much information as possible to satisfy its oversight interests, the Department also has a longstanding policy, spanning Administrations, not to confirm, deny, or comment on individual matters that may be under investigation, except under limited circumstances not applicable here,” he added.

 

“We hope this information is helpful. While we are unable to provide anything further on these topics, please do not hesitate to contact us on other matters where we may be able to be of assistance,” Hyun concluded.

 

Hunter Biden said in December 2020 that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware was “investigating my tax affairs.”

 

“Per DOJ policy, we cannot comment on an ongoing investigation,” the office said in response at the time.

Jordan: Toxic gas leak kills at least ten, injures dozens in Aqaba port

 

More than 200 injured as substance believed to be chlorine gas leaks from vessel damaged in transport

 

At least 10 people died and more than 250 were injured on Monday, when toxic gas leaked from a tank in the Jordanian port of Aqaba, state media has reported.

 

The death toll is expected to rise, officials said, with hospitals in the port city at maximum capacity.

 

The leak happened after a tank filled with a substance reported to be liquid chlorine fell during transportation, said Amer al-Sartawi, the spokesperson of the Public Security Directorate.

 

Footage circulating on social media showed the spread of the gas leak.

 

The southern beach in the governorate of Aqaba was evacuated before the leak was brought under control, the official said.

 

"The area was immediately isolated, and specialists began to deal with the accident. Meanwhile, the Civil Defence transferred a number of injuries to the hospital, and they are all under treatment," the spokesman added.

 

The injured were taken to Prince Hashem Military Hospital in the city of Iba'a, as well as the Islamic Hospital, and a third private hospital, in addition to those treated at a temporary field hospital.

 

The Jordan Social Security Corporation said it was maintaining a close eye on the condition of the injured in case of air evacuation to other hospitals.

 

Jordanian Prime Minister Bishr al-Khasawneh has ordered an investigation, to be headed by the minister of interior.

 

An environmental official was quoted by Jordanian media as saying "the impact of gas is currently declining, and there is no harm to public health as a result of the accident".

 

The head of the chemical industries sector in the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Ahmed al-Bas, said the gas was "liquid chlorine", which he described as a basic industrial substance used as a steriliser.

 

Al-Bas said high concentrations of the gas were toxic, but low concentrations were not harmful.

 

He stressed that the impact of Monday's leak "will fade within a very short time with the spread of gas in the atmosphere, especially since the place is open".

 

"In the first moments of leakage and explosion, the gas is fatal, and after a short period it becomes harmful and causes a coma, then when it vanishes in the air it becomes without effect," he said.

 

Al-Bas added that "within hours" of the leak, there would be no risk to humans from the gas.

A statement by the Conference of Catholic Bishops was read out in parishes across the East African country Sunday, acknowledging that church members violated their "oath of allegiance to God's commandments" during the genocide, AP reported.

 

The genocide in Rwanda took place between April and July 1994. Members of the Hutu majority ethnic group, enraged by the assassination of Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana, systematically murdered members of the Tutsi ethnic minority and moderate Hutus.

 

Rwanda is a majority Christian country and Roman Catholics make up the biggest religious grouping in the country. Several Catholic priests have been indicted by international tribunals for alleged crimes committed during the genocide, but the church in Rwanda has not previously acknowledged its formal role in the mass-murder, saying that those guilty of crimes from within its ranks were acting individually.

A massive leak of personal information from a California state database for permits to carry concealed weapons is larger than initially reported, officials said Wednesday.

 

The revelation came a day after the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said it was informed of a data breach affecting every person with a California concealed-carry permit.

 

On Wednesday, the California Department of Justice said the leak was more extensive, affecting not only current permit holders but anybody who was granted or denied a permit to carry a concealed weapon between 2011 and 2021.

 

The data were exposed when the Department of Justice updated its Firearms Dashboard Portal on Monday, state Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta's office said in a statement.

 

The information included names, dates of birth, gender, race, driver's license numbers, addresses and criminal histories, according to the statement. Social Security numbers and financial information were not exposed.

 

In addition to information from the concealed-carry permit applications, data on the Assault Weapon Registry, Handguns Certified for Sale, Dealer Record of Sale, Firearm Safety Certificate and Gun Violence Restraining Order dashboards were "also impacted," Bonta's office said, but authorities are investigating whether any personally identifiable information was exposed from those dashboards.

Boris Johnson hospitalized for surgery

 

The British PM was ‘briefly’ anesthetized for a sinus operation

 

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was briefly hospitalized under anesthetic on Monday for what his office called a “minor and routine” sinus operation. He is reportedly resting at home, with Deputy PM Dominic Raab serving in his stead until he recovers.

 

Johnson is expected to return to work on Tuesday depending on “how he feels,” including visiting Rwanda for a Commonwealth heads of government meeting. However, any significant military decisions – such as moves regarding the conflict in Ukraine – made within the next 24 hours are likely to be left up to Raab.

 

NHS guidance regarding general anesthetic warns against “driving, drinking alcohol and signing any legal documents for 24 to 48 hours” after a procedure, noting that the drugs can affect memory and concentration.

 

While the nature of Johnson’s surgery was not disclosed, The Guardian suggested he had been subjected to a functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis. The procedure widens the sinuses without making any cuts to the face.

 

Johnson’s office refused to disclose whether the PM had skipped the gargantuan 6.5 million-person NHS waiting list to receive the procedure, merely stating that the surgery had been scheduled “for a while.” A spokesperson said it was “certainly not [his] understanding” that the operation may have been related to Johnson’s diagnosed Covid-19 infection in 2020.

 

Waiting lists for basic procedures in the NHS have ballooned over the last two years, with millions of elective surgeries repeatedly postponed due to Covid-19 regulations that sought to keep hospital beds empty should they be required by virus-stricken patients. While the postponed procedures are classified as elective, such lengthy delays risk allowing non-emergency situations to spiral into fatal illness, such as diagnostic procedures that would normally catch cancers before they become inoperable.
