White House Stalls On Bill Allowing People With Prior Cannabis Use To Work For CIA, NSA And Other Intelligence Agencies

The White House still has not formed an official stance on a bill that bans the federal government from rejecting security clearances required for employment at the CIA and NSA.

 

Progress on this front occurred in July 2021 when the FBI updated its hiring policies to consider candidates who had not consumed cannabis for one full year prior to their application date. Previously the agency demanded that candidates not consume cannabis for at least three years before applying.

 

Sen. Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) measure that forbids the federal government from declining employment security clearances for intelligence agencies due to prior marijuana use passed the Senate Intelligence Committee last week. The measure is now attached to the 2023 Intelligence Authorization Act, which needs to pass both chambers to reach the President’s desk.

“I applaud the committee for including my provisions, in particular an amendment ensuring that past cannabis use will not disqualify intelligence community applicants from serving their country,” Wyden, stated in a press release Thursday. “It’s a common-sense change to ensure the IC can recruit the most capable people possible.”

 

At a press briefing Thursday, a reporter asked John Kirby, National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator for Strategic Communication if the administration has seen the measure yet and has a position. “You’re going to have to let me take that question, sir. I don’t have anything for you on that,” replied Kirby, a former Pentagon spokesperson, and retired Navy Rear Admiral.

 

While provisions of the marijuana amendment are not public, they were partly presented in Sen. Wyden’s official press release.

 

The provisions include, “Prohibiting denial of a security clearance to IC personnel based solely on past use of cannabis.”

 

In the press release, Sen. Wyden says he “will continue to fight to ensure that ongoing cannabis use is not the basis for denying or losing a clearance.”

Different Legal Strategies Are Not A Crime

The Soviet-style show trial has featured testimony from people in Trump’s administration who did not think it wise to keep challenging election results, particularly after the Electoral College had convened. I know and interviewed many of them for “Rigged,” my book on the 2020 election.

They found the post-election day legal efforts led by Trump to be poorly strategized and executed. I share details about some of those debacles in the book, particularly how Rudy Guiliani took a promising Pennsylvania case with superstar attorneys — about disparate treatment of voters — into a case about fraud, thereby ruining it. That decision also led judges in other states to get nervous and impatient about other cases.

It also increased anxiety among establishment attorneys who had previously been part of the legal effort. Many of these attorneys were also having their lives and reputations threatened by NeverTrump groups, who were posting personal information and sending mobs to harass them.

Trump administration officials had major concerns — prior to the election — about the lack of election integrity provided by the rush to widespread mail-in voting. For example, former Attorney General Bill Barr said in September 2020 that expansive mail-in voting was “playing with fire.” But these officials also believed it wasn’t really the job of the Justice Department to pursue investigations about the issue. They were willing to look into various claims that were swirling about, but considered it to be more of a local or regional crime issue that could rise to the level of DOJ interest…

The January 6 show trial has tried to suggest that problems with the 2020 election were thoroughly investigated. Evidence for the claim is lacking. Former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Bill McSwain has publicly said he was told by Barr to stand down from investigating, a claim Barr publicly denies. McSwain wrote Trump was “right to be upset about the way the Democrats ran the 2020 election in Pennsylvania — it was a partisan disgrace.”

He added, in a letter to Trump that was later publicized, “On Election Day and afterwards, our Office received various allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities. As part of my responsibilities as U.S. Attorney, I wanted to be transparent with the public and, of course, investigate fully any allegations. Attorney General Barr, however, instructed me not to make any public statements or put out any press releases regarding possible election irregularities. I was also given a directive to pass along serious allegations to the State Attorney General for investigation — the same State Attorney General who had already declared that you could not win. I disagreed with the decision, but those were my orders. As a Marine infantry officer, I was trained to follow the chain of command and to respect the orders of my superiors, even when I disagree with them.”

Again, Barr denies this accounting. And he’s publicly said he did try to run down various allegations of fraud that were being bandied about.

Clark’s superiors at the Department of Justice did not want him to pursue his aggressive efforts, but he was also discussing the topic with their superior, the president himself. He tried to pursue a more aggressive strategy than the one that many DOJ officials thought prudent.

Reasonable people can see both sides here. Prudence — particularly so late in the game — is a huge issue. More tenacious fighting for election integrity is also virtuous. Many leaders up to and including Trump himself should have done far more — far earlier — to fight Democrats’ coordinated and widespread attacks on the integrity of the country’s election system. Many Republican officials were sounding the alarm in the months prior…

But differing legal strategies are not crimes, no matter how much Pelosi and Cheney and their media bootlickers would like them to be. It is reasonable to oppose Clark’s strategy, but the letter causing so much dispute was not about fraud. It was about the many other problems affecting the integrity of the election. It was also — and it says this clearly on every page — a draft product for discussion. The letter urged state legislatures to ensure the integrity of their state’s elections when there was cause for concern. The Constitution does give that responsibility to the states.

The January 6 show trial is also about covering up the truth of the 2020 election. Turning questions about the many problems with the 2020 election into a crime is the type of thing that is done in third-world countries. Persecuting people who talk about it or try to do something about it is what you expect in corrupt authoritarian regimes. It is horrific to see it happening here.

May Migrant Apprehensions Hit 220K — Breaks Clinton Era Record

 

Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 220,000 migrants along the U.S.-Mexico Border in May, setting a record dating back to the Clinton era. Since March 1, agents apprehended more than 633,000 migrants along the southwest border.

 

A leaked Border Patrol report reviewed by Breitbart Texas reveals that agents apprehended more than 220,000 migrants who illegally entered the U.S. through the southwest border during the month of May. Border Patrol records dating back to the Clinton administration show this sets a record for May apprehensions.

 

Official reports from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show the apprehension of 210,749 in March and 201,800 for April. Adding in the unofficial report of more than 220,000 brings the three-month total to more than 633,137. The combined reports also reveal that since the beginning of the fiscal year, October 1, 2021, agents apprehended more than 1.4 million migrants in eight months.

 

News reports indicate a record migrant caravan of 10,000 to 15,000 left southern Mexico on Monday to head to the U.S., Breitbart Texas reported. A group of approximately 9,500 crossed the border between Guatemala and Mexico with plans to head to the United States, an organizer of the group told Fox News. The group consists mainly of migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

 

The Rio Grande Valley Sector remains the busiest of the nine southwest border sectors. These agents apprehended approximately 45,000 migrants. This is followed closely by more than 44,000 apprehended in the Del Rio Sector. The El Paso and Yuma Sectors account for another 67,000 migrants.

 

During the Memorial Day weekend, Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens reported that his agents apprehended nearly 4,000 of the sector’s May total of 44,000. He also reported 1,600 more migrants got away without being apprehended, Breitbart Texas reported.

 

Following the record April apprehensions, CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus stated, “The fact is that our borders are not open, and we will continue to remove those who enter our country unlawfully and have no legal basis to stay.”

 

“After many months of planning, we are executing a comprehensive strategy to safely, orderly, and humanely manage our borders,” Magnus added.

 

In reality, the southwest border with Mexico is anything but safe, orderly, and humane as nearly two dozen migrants drowned in the Del Rio Border Patrol in April. Video reports from Eagle Pass and the Rio Grande Valley continue to show migrants crossing at will. Other reports show the inhumane and life-threatening circumstances that take place in human smuggling operations along the border.

 

The administration’s plans appear to focus on increasing the speed at which migrants are processed and released into the U.S.

The Ukrainian military attacked the drilling platforms of the oil company Chernomorneftegaz on Monday, Crimean Head Sergey Aksenov said, adding that several workers are missing following the incident.

Russian Defense Spokesperson, Igor Konashenkov, said, in a press statement, that long-range, high-precision Kalibr missiles launched from the sea hit the headquarters of the Ukrainian forces near the village of Shiroka Dacha in the Dnipropetrovsk province, while a work meeting for the leaders of the Alexandria strategic operational group was being held.

 

The Spokesperson explained that as a result of the strike, more than 50 generals and officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were killed, including representatives of the General Staff, the leadership of the Kakhovka Group, the air assault forces, and the formations operating on the Nikolaev and Zaporozhye axes.

 

Ukrainian troops strike 200-ton oil facility

 

At the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine, the authorities of the Lugansk People's Republic announced that 200 tons of diesel fuel caught fire as a result of an explosion at an oil storage facility in the city of Rovinki as a result of the Ukrainian bombing.

 

LPR authorities said the blast could have been caused by the strike of a Ukrainian Tochka-U missile, noting that there were casualties, the number of which is still unknown.

China has slammed recent comments made by US President Joe Biden and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern regarding Beijing’s increased activity in the Pacific region, calling it a gross interference in China’s internal affairs.

 

Biden and Ardern met on Tuesday in Washington, where they released a joint statement expressing shared concerns over Beijing’s recent security agreement with the Solomon Islands.

 

“The establishment of a persistent military presence in the Pacific by a state that does not share our values or security interests would fundamentally alter the strategic balance of the region and pose national-security concerns to both our countries,” read a statement from the White House.

 

“We have more work to do on these Pacific islands,” said Biden before his meeting with Ardern, who stated that both the US and New Zealand were strongly aligned in “furthering the Pacific values and the focus that Pacific island leaders have determined for themselves."

China’s Foreign ministry has hit out at these statements, insisting that they smeared China and grossly interfered in Beijing’s internal affairs.

 

“We have taken note of the relevant joint statement, which distorts the facts and slanders China's regular cooperation with the countries of Oceania,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian, adding that “This is gross interference in the internal affairs of the People’s Republic of China, which we strongly protest.”

 

The spokesperson stressed that China’s deal with the Solomon Islands will have a positive effect on the peaceful development of Oceania, and that security cooperation between the two countries is not aimed against any other nation. “We don’t intend to build military bases there,” insisted Zhao.

 

Nevertheless, security ties between the Solomon islands and China have been of particular concern to the US and its Pacific ally Australia, which is located less than 2,000km away from the Solomon islands. Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stated that a potential Chinese military base on the islands was a “red line” that would not be tolerated. However, neither he nor Washington have made it clear how they might respond to such a Chinese presence in the region.

 

Meanwhile, Solomon Island Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavore has told his parliament that opponents of the new security pact with China, who he did not mention by name, have threatened the island nation with a possible invasion. Australia’s PM has denied these claims and insisted that his country will respond “calmly” to the deal.

 

Last week, Beijing announced that it will increase cooperation with the Solomon islands and “pursue greater collaboration that will deliver on joint interests and commitments,” including regional “peace and security.”

 

“Under the current circumstance of unilateralism and hegemonic bullying, China is willing to consolidate unity and cooperation with developing countries including Samoa, jointly safeguard the legitimate rights of developing nations, and insist on true multilateralism,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday.

 

Wang is currently on a diplomatic tour of the Pacific region as China has been attempting to increase its economic and security cooperation in the region. Beijing has proposed several wide-ranging deals to a number of Pacific island nations, however, many have remained cautious, citing concerns that China’s active presence in the region could lead to geopolitical tensions with the US and its allies.

Watergate remains the greatest political scandal in modern American history. It culminated not only in President Nixon’s announcement of his resignation, 39 years ago Thursday, but in the conviction and imprisonment of his three most senior aides. Attorney General John Mitchell, White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, and Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs John Ehrlichman were found guilty of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury in the three-month Watergate cover-up trial, which ended on January 1, 1975.

 

I saw it all unfold. I was a young lawyer working on the White House staff and assisting in Nixon’s defense efforts. It is true that we failed spectacularly. Of course, I’m disappointed we weren’t more successful. But whether the defendants were innocent or guilty, I’ve always worried on a more basic level that the heightened emotions of the times denied them the due process of law envisioned by our Constitution.

 

As a result of some recent discoveries I made while researching a book on the Watergate trials, my concern has been vindicated. It turns out that the notion that “no man is above the law” somehow didn’t apply to judges or prosecutors involved in the cover-up trial. Documents I have uncovered indicate that the efforts to punish the wrongdoings of Watergate led to further wrongdoing by the very officials given the task of bringing the Watergate defendants to justice.

 

The new documents suggestthat defendants in the Watergate cover-up trial, held before Judge John Sirica, received anything but a fair trial. Indeed, they suggestprosecutorial and judicial misconduct so serious secret meetings, secret documents, secret collusion that their disclosure at the time either would have prevented Sirica from presiding over the trial or would have resulted in the reversal of the convictions and the cases being remanded for new trials.

And while Zuck emphasized the lack of hiring - noting that it has reduced its target for hiring engineers in 2022 to around 6,000-7,000, down from an initial plan to hire about 10,000 new engineers, which comes amid a hiring paused announced month - he confirmed that layoffs are also coming saying the company was "turning up the heat" on performance management to weed out staffers unable to meet more aggressive goals.

 

“Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn't be here," Zuckerberg said, adding that "part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might decide that this place isn't for you, and that self-selection is OK with me."

 

Others made the message even more forcefully, with Chief Product Officer Chris Cox saying that the company must "prioritize more ruthlessly" and "operate leaner, meaner, better executing teams."

 

"I have to underscore that we are in serious times here and the headwinds are fierce. We need to execute flawlessly in an environment of slower growth, where teams should not expect vast influxes of new engineers and budgets," Cox wrote.

Oxfam condemns G7 for ‘leaving millions to starve’

 

Global aid group Oxfam has eviscerated the G7 countries for pledging a pittance to fight the global food crisis

 

The G7 countries are “leaving millions to starve and cooking the planet,” global aid group Oxfam’s head of inequality policy Max Lawson has declared in a statement issued on Tuesday condemning the mere $4.5 billion the industrialized nations have pledged to fight the worst hunger crisis in decades.

 

Lawson argued that “at least $28.5 billion more” was needed to “finance food and agriculture investments to end hunger and fill the huge gap in UN humanitarian appeals.” G7 countries have pledged about $14 billion to fight global food insecurity this year, including the amount pledged on Tuesday.

 

However, it’s not clear how much of that money has actually been distributed to its intended recipients. While the US Congress passed a major weapons and aid package for Ukraine last month that included $5 billion to “fight global hunger,” none of the hunger money had been sent out as of this past weekend, according to Politico.

 

With even wealthy G7 countries facing economic difficulties in the wake of two years of Covid-19 shutdowns, the Oxfam rep suggested there were other ways they could fight hunger among the world’s most vulnerable. “They could cancel debts of poor nations” or “tax the excess profits of food and energy corporates,” he argued, or “ban biofuels,” which divert crops that could be used for food to producing energy instead.

 

Most importantly they could have tackled the economic inequality and climate breakdown that is driving this hunger. They failed to do any of this, despite having the power to do so.

 

Lawson noted that while the world faces its worst hunger crisis “in a generation,” the rich have seen their profits soar at the same time. “Corporate profits have soared during Covid-19 and the number of billionaires has increased more in 24 months than it did in 23 years,” he said, noting that the food industry alone has produced 62 new billionaires and calling the hunger emergency “big business.”

 

The UN World Food Program begged the G7 nations to “act now or record hunger will continue to rise and millions more will face starvation” last week, declaring that it had a plan - “the most ambitious in WFP’s history” - requiring $22.2 billion to “both save lives and build resilience for 152 million people in 2022.”

 

It’s not clear where they obtained that figure, as the G7 countries themselves have said that 323 million people are on the brink of starvation because of this year’s dire food crisis, with 950 million expected to go hungry in total in 2022.

 

While the G7 countries have been reluctant to open their wallets to solve world hunger, tens of billions have been pledged in economic and lethal aid to Ukraine, where the war has interrupted a wheat harvest that typically accounts for a fifth of the world’s “high-grade” wheat and 7% of all wheat. The UN’s food program normally buys half of its grain from the country.

 

Exacerbating the supply crisis are record droughts around the world, with East Africa particularly affected. One person is estimated to die of hunger every 48 seconds in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, where the droughts are the worst in 70 years, according to Oxfam.

According to a newly released study by the University of Oxford, a jaw-dropping 94% of recently approved medications are not supported by high-quality evidence that demonstrates their benefits. What’s more, just like with the experimental Covid-19 ‘vaccines,’ side effects and adverse reactions to these drugs are being severely underreported across the board.When looking at medical drugs that have been approved since 2008 under the Cochrane reviews – a “leading” international journal and database that is endorsed by over 100 organizations worldwide, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) -researchers determined that just 87 of the 1,567 medications (6%) had clinical data that met the “high-quality” standard.

“Of 1567 eligible interventions, 87 (5.6%) had high quality evidence on first-listed primary outcomes, positive, statistically significant results and were rated by review authors as beneficial.”

Unbelievably, the majority of these drugs could not even pass the ‘moderate-quality’ review, with over 50% failing to meet the reduced threshold. And yet, consumers have access to these drugs, which are causing unknown and underreported side effects – something that should amount to medical malpractice at the very least. That is – if we lived in a sane, well-functioning society.

The controversial Azov Battalion has released a video which it says shows its fighters in Mariupol, which Russia claims to have “liberated”, underground with sheltering civilians.

 

Uploaded to the Azov Battalion’s YouTube channel and shared by the National Guard of Ukraine — which incorporates the battalion — on its verified Twitter account, the video purportedly shows Azov fighters distributing supplies to civilians holed up underneath the Azovstal steelworks complex, which remains under Ukrainian control.

 

“We want to see peaceful skies, we want to breathe in fresh air,” said one woman in the video, released on Saturday but supposedly shot on Thursday, per the Associated Press.

 

“You have simply no idea what it means for us to simply eat, drink some sweetened tea. For us it is already happiness,” she told the wire service, which noted that the “[c]ontents of the video could not be independently verified.”

 

A girl in the video claimed she and her family had seen “neither the sky, nor the sun” since late February, with Mariupol having come under siege only a short time after the Russian invasion commenced.

 

Mariupol has proved a tough nut for Russian forces to crack, despite reports of its fall being imminent having circulated for weeks now.

 

In recent days the Russians claimed it had finally been “liberated”, with the fact that the Ukrainian military remains a threat in the port city’s fortified steelworks being minimised and President Vladimir Putin appearing on video to call off a planned assault — possibly as a ruse — and instruct that it should instead be sealed off.

 

“There is no need to climb into these catacombs and crawl underground through these industrial facilities. Block off [Azovstal] so that not even a fly comes through,” he said.

 

The city has been a point of interest throughout the conflict, in part because of its status as a stronghold of the Azov Battalion — formerly an unofficial paramilitary force with neo-Nazi links which the mainstream media do not deny, despite general dismissal of the Russian characterisation of their “special military operation” against a Ukraine led by a Jewish president and Jewish prime minister as a “de-Nazification” mission.

 

Mariupol is also important due to its strategic position on the map, with Moscow needing to bring it under full control if it is to establish a secure land bridge between the Crimea, annexed in 2014, and Russian-separatist controlled territory in the Donbas and Russia proper — a key war aim.

US Army teaching Critical Race Theory to West Point cadets: report

 

The US Army has introduced Critical Race Theory to West Point cadets, new documents show, according to Fox News Digital.

 

The “woke” lessons ask cadets about whiteness while encouraging them to apply Critical Race Theory to their answers, according to documents obtained by Judicial Watch and given to Fox News.

 

The more than 600 documents were only handed over to Judicial Watch after the conservative organization sued the Department of Defense.

 

“Our military is under attack – from within,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a press release.

 

“These documents show racist, anti-American CRT propaganda is being used to try to radicalize our rising generation of Army leadership at West Point.”

 

According to Fox News, a slide that delved into “Whiteness” states: “In order to understand racial inequality and slavery, it is first necessary to address whiteness” and the “Take-for-grantedness of whiteness.”

 

The slide also claims whiteness “is a location of structural advantage, of race privilege,” is “a standpoint or place from which white people look at themselves and the rest of society” and “refers to a set of cultural practices that are usually unmarked and unnamed.”

 

Another slide addresses affirmative action and asks “Do you think Affirmative Action creates an environment for ‘reverse discrimination? Use CRT to support your answer.”

 

A slide also poses the question “how would you apply a tenant of CRT to this idea,” referring to the difference between desegregation and integration.

 

In another slide, under Critical Race Theory, it states, “racism is ordinary” and “White Americans have primarily benefited from civil rights legislation.”

 

An additional slide has a graphic that states “Modern Slavery in the USA” with accompanying statements that say blacks are less likely than whites to have a college education, receive recommended medical screenings, receive a bank approval for a mortgage or get promoted at a job.

 

It also states blacks are more likely than whites to live in poverty, be homicide victims or be incarnated.

 

Fox News Digital wrote it reached out to DOD for comment on the documents but has yet to hear back.

 

Judicial Watch uploaded all the documents it obtained from its FOIA request in its press release.

 

A slide labeled “Educating Future Officers for the Modern Battlefield” states: “Regardless of personal views, future leaders need to understand arguments on controversial issues and need to be prepared to thoughtfully answer questions when Soldiers ask about topics in the news, such as Critical Race Theory (CRT).”

 

It also states “both CRT and criticisms of it as a theory comprise two lessons in one Social Sciences elective (non-core) course.”

The Pentagon official accused Putin of having “imperial ambitions” and “seeking to reclaim territory that he believes belonged to a glorious past of the Russian Empire.” With Ukrainian troops being “stalwart defenders” and “holding tough,” Kahl said he did not think the Russians would “have the capacity to achieve those grandiose objectives.”

 

While Russian troops have been making gains in Ukraine, they are “really on any given day measured in blocks” and are “not large, sweeping breakthroughs of Ukrainian defenses,” Kahl insisted. Both Ukrainians and Russians are taking casualties and “the front lines are not moving very much.”

Leatherface vs. Tricky Dick: ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ as Political Satire

 

As the title indicates, I focus on the film’s political subtexts and how Chain Saw comments on American politics in a bitter, mocking way. In particular I explore director Tobe Hooper’s own insistence that his film was significantly inspired by the Watergate scandal that ultimately forced Richard Nixon to become the first and (so far) only U.S. president to resign from office.

 

The book is a deep dive, minute-by-minute analysis of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre that comprehensively unpacks its many fascinating details. It also presents a thorough discussion of Nixon’s remarkable political career with the complicated Watergate story and all of its crazy, jaw-dropping twists and turns frequently front and center.

 

I don’t claim Chain Saw is a direct allegory of Watergate. But I do draw attention to dozens of ways the film alludes to the scandal. I also share more than a few connections between the film’s mask-wearing killer and the president whose infamous “Tricky Dick” persona was even then often caricatured in mask form.

 

The book begins with a discussion of the “nightmare” of Watergate. That was a word used frequently at the time to describe the break-ins at the Democratic National Committee headquarters prior to the 1972 election and the unraveling efforts of Nixon and “all the president’s men” to hide the White House’s connection to the perpetrators. “Nightmare” is a word often evoked to describe the world of Chain Saw, too, of course, and the way the story “folds continuously back on itself” (as Hooper once said) according to a kind of “nightmare syntax” (as his co-writer Kim Henkel put it).

Isn't the language misleading?

I remember hearing some legal argument about the use of "of the" instead of something else. I don't remember now. "Of the United States" implies it's a corporation, where as "Constitution of United States" implies country. Something having to do with the complexities of legal language. The point is oaths void.
