Paul Tully, political director of the Democratic National Committee, was found dead Thursday in his hotel room, authorities said. He was 48.

 

Pulaski County Coroner Steve Nawojczyk said Tully appeared to have died of natural causes, probably heart attack or stroke.

 

Tully, who had been directing state-by-state targeting for the Clinton campaign, was apparently stricken while getting ready for bed Wednesday night, Nawojczyk said.

 

His body was found by a maid in his hotel room late Thursday afternoon, the coroner said.

 

โ€œEverybody here is still in a state of shock,โ€ said Betsey Wright, research director for Bill Clintonโ€™s campaign.

 

In a statement, Clinton called Tully โ€œa dear friend and trusted adviser. Paul had one of the nationโ€™s greatest political minds and one of its biggest hearts.โ€

 

Tully was a beefy, intense, chain-smoking political operative who moved in and out of top Democratic campaigns for more than a decade. He worked on the presidential campaigns of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) in 1980, Walter F. Mondale in 1984, Gary Hart, and later Michael Dukakis in 1988, after Hartโ€™s effort collapsed.

 

Tully moved to the Democratic National Committee after Ronald H. Brown became chairman in 1989.

Diplomats attending the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) meeting said that agency's Director-General, Rafael Grossi, declared that Iran plans to disconnect 20 IAEA surveillance cameras and other monitoring equipment.

 

This comes after the IAEA's Board of Governors adopted on Wednesday a draft resolution submitted by the US, France, UK, and Germany, criticizing Iran for what they claim were incomplete answers given to the IAEA on uranium traces at "undeclared sites". These claims were quickly refuted by the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, who said that Iran has neither secret or unwritten nuclear activities nor unreported nuclear sites.

 

Russia and China both voted against the anti-Iran resolution.

 

Before the release of the IAEA report that later led to the US and E3 submitting the draft, Grossi visited "Israel", which raised questions regarding the nature of the visit ahead of the BoG meeting, and led to suspicions regarding the IAEA's impartiality.

 

The AEOI also released a statement on Wednesday, wherein it announced that Tehran has made the decision to remove two of the IAEA's cameras from a nuclear facility.

 

Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Thursday an informed source as saying that Iran will speed up the production and installation of new generations of centrifuges, including the IR6, IR4, and IR2M generations.

 

According to the source, this is only one of a series of procedures to be taken by Iran, adding that the IAEA will be informed of them.

 

Iran's new move, which Grossi announced, seems to be one of those measures.

To this day no definite result has come from investigations into the infamous โ€˜Maidan snipersโ€™ that killed dozens of both protesters and police officers. Conflicting reports and claims by various sides name them as working for the embattled government, the protesters, Russia โ€“ all in the name of stoking tensions further. According to some of the snipers themselves, they received direct orders from a US officer. Would that be something that NATO (or someone linked to NATO) could have sanctioned? Itโ€™s impossible to say with any certainty, but the killings went far towards enraging the masses, which ultimately drove Yanukovych out of the country.

 

Meanwhile, Reuters, then not yet so sure of Kievโ€™s innocence, asked (back in 2014) why no one was charged with killing policemen, especially when it is considered that the prosecutors and the minister in charge of the investigation all played a part in fueling the uprising. By way of evidence, the General Prosecutor of Ukraine Vitaly Yarema was videotaped striking a traffic cop in the face during the protests. To what degree was Yarema and numerous other Kiev officials were corrupted and compromised by Western money will never be known, but itโ€™s a question still worthy of asking.

Another thing to question is why the Western media barely reported Kievโ€™s shelling of the Donbass, home to millions of Russian speakers and passport holders, over the course of the last eight years? At the same time, numerous reports โ€“ many of them from Ukrainian citizens caught up in the fighting โ€“ describe atrocities and war crimes being committed by Ukrainian forces, many of them outright neo-Nazis, such the Azov Battalion. These forces have been indiscriminately bombing schools, hospitals and residential areas, and, to emphasize, these eyewitness accounts are coming from the Ukrainian people themselves.

 

Back to NATO and Ukraine. The brutal reality, as summed up by Jens Stoltenbergโ€™s remark, is that Ukraine is already a de facto proxy member of NATO, and has been since at least 2014.

 

As the scholar John Mearsheimer explained, โ€œThe alliance began training the Ukrainian military in 2014, averaging 10,000 trained troops annually over the next eight years.โ€

 

The arming of Ukraine happened regardless of who was in the White House. In December 2017, the Trump administration, together with other NATO states, began sending โ€˜defensiveโ€™ weapons to Ukraine, while Kiev took a major role in military exercises held on the Russian border.

 

The US and Ukraine have been co-hosting Exercise Sea Breeze, yearly naval drills in the Black Sea. The July 2021 iteration was the largest to date, including navies from 32 countries. In September the same year, the Ukrainian army led โ€˜Rapid Trident 2021โ€™, which the US Army describes as โ€œA US Army Europe and Africa-assisted annual exercise designed to enhance the interoperability among allied and partner nations.โ€

 

The key word here is โ€œinteroperability,โ€ which would give โ€˜non-NATO partnerโ€™ Ukraine much of what was already being given to regular paying client states. Yet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just keeps asking for more, and NATO is happy to oblige.

 

Some may argue that Ukraine was absolutely right to join forces with NATO, considering that Russia had โ€˜annexedโ€™ the Crimean Republic and absorbed it into its โ€˜empireโ€™. Thatโ€™s the view being sowed across NATO and its partner states. In reality, the Crimean population held a democratic referendum that asked whether they wanted to rejoin Russia as a federal subject, or if they wanted to restore the 1992 Crimean constitution and peninsula's status as a part of Ukraine.

 

The result should have silenced the critics, but instead it just infuriated them more: a 97% vote for integration of the region into the Russian Federation with an 83% voter turnout. Consequently, President Putin signed a decree, after its formal ratification in the State Duma, recognizing Crimea as a sovereign state โ€“without so much as a drop of blood being shed.

 

It would take a dyed-in-the-wool Russophobe to take in all of the above and not, at the very least, understand why Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine.

Human trafficking trial of alleged leader of 'The Family' delayed

 

The human trafficking trial of a man police claim is the head of a drug trade network dubbed โ€œThe Familyโ€ has been derailed by his co-accused.

Justice Bruce Millar was to begin hearing trial evidence Monday in the prosecution of Lawrence Orubor and his alleged accomplice, Shakir Jamal.

 

But after Jamalโ€™s lawyer withdrew because of a potential conflict with a Crown witness, Millar granted an application to adjourn the case while the co-accused awaits the appointment of new counsel by Legal Aid.

 

Three weeks ago, during pre-trial motions, then-defence counsel Andrea Urquhart applied to withdraw from the case after it was disclosed a proposed Crown witness was a former client of hers.

 

On Monday, defence lawyer Shamsher Kothari, who has not been appointed as Jamalโ€™s new counsel, asked Millar to adjourn the trial, because the accused hasnโ€™t had a new lawyer approved for the case.

โ€œHeโ€™s unrepresented. He wants a lawyer. Heโ€™s waiting for a lawyer (to be appointed),โ€ Kothari said.

 

He said even if Jamal was to stand trial as an unrepresented accused, a lawyer would likely have to be brought on board to cross-examine the Crownโ€™s two main complainants.

 

Prosecutor Vicki Faulkner agreed Jamalโ€™s trial would at least need a lawyer to conduct that portion of the hearing.

 

โ€œThere would have to be counsel appointed โ€ฆ to cross-examine those two women,โ€ Faulkner said, in not opposing the adjournment application.

 

She also told Millar the Crown wasnโ€™t seeking to sever the allegations against Orubor and Jamal and conduct two trials instead of one.

 

Millar raised a concern a delay could impact Charter right to be tried in a timely fashion, but Faulkner said the deadline set by the Supreme Court for cases to be concluded isnโ€™t until July 7, 2023.

 

Oruborโ€™s lawyer, Clayton Rice, said he had no submissions to make on the adjournment application.

Mossad spy network arrested in Iran

 

Mehdi Shamsabadi, the Prosecutor General of the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, confirmed Tuesday that some Mossad agents were arrested in the province.

 

According to the prosecutor, the arrested Mossad agents sought to assassinate Iranian nuclear scientists.

 

Shamsabadi indicted that "the arrest of these Mossad operatives came after a complicated intelligence operation that lasted for eight months of monitoring them."

 

He pointed out that the arrested agents are under investigation, adding that a lawsuit will be filed against them soon.

 

It is noteworthy that last April, three Israeli Mossad spies were arrested in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan upon judicial order. According to Iranian intelligence, the spies were involved in disseminating classified information and documents.

 

In late May, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps' public relations department announced the arrest of a spying network linked with Israeli intelligence.

 

In a statement, the IRGC indicated that "the network, led by the Zionist regime's intelligence service, attempted to steal and destroy personal and public properties, and abduct people and get fabricated confessions."

 

Similarly, the Iranian Security Directorate also announced in March the dismantling of an espionage network working for "Israel" in western Iran.

 

The Directorate indicated that the network was recruiting people to carry out sabotage operations inside Iran.

 

In the same context, Iranian media had said that the intelligence apparatus of the IRGC arrested the members of a Mossad network that attempted to reach the IR6 centrifuges at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant.

 

Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced in July 2021 that it had arrested agents who were members of a network working for the Israeli occupation and that it had seized a cache of weapons and ammunition intended for use in riots and terror in the country.

What is liberation theology?

A little more than a year into his papacy, Pope Francis seems to be speaking loudest about economic injustice, alternatively denouncing โ€œtrickle-downโ€ economics and calling over and over again for a โ€œpoor church for the poor.โ€ Francisโ€™ supporters and opponents alike often blame this particular attitude on one source: liberation theology.

 

Broadly speaking, liberation theology is a social and political movement within the church that attempts to interpret the gospel of Jesus Christ through the lived experiences of oppressed people. While that doesnโ€™t necessarily seem like it should be a cause of contention in the church, it has, in the 60 or so years that it has been practiced and thought, caused a tremendous amount of controversy.

 

Liberation theology has its origins in Latin America in the mid-1950s as socio-economic development pushed the peasant workers and farming populations into desperate poverty. With the economic unrest came political unrest, and military dictators took over many governments in the name of national security.

 

While these social and political transformations were taking place, the church as a whole was also moving toward a more socially oriented mission. Laypeople, religious, and charismatic members of the hierarchy committed themselves to working with the poor.

 

The final piece of the puzzle, and the one that caused most of the controversy, was that some strains of liberation theology used Marxist economic theory, applying it to the gospel. In this interpretation, Jesus becomes the โ€œliberatorโ€ and always is firmly on the side of the poorest of the poor. Because of this preference for the poor, liberation theology often calls for reorganization of social, governmental, and economic structures so that the poor are not merely cared for, but brought into the fullness of human flourishing. The seminal work on liberation theology was written by Dominican Father Gustavo Gutiรฉrrez in 1971. A Theology of Liberation gave the movement its name, and emphasized the churchโ€™s mission to those on the periphery of society.

Understanding the NY Times Article on the CIA in Ukraine

When you read some so-called bombshell report dishing the dirt on some Top Secret U.S. operation in the New York Times or the Washington Post, you need to understand that this was not the result of some intrepid, eager beaver reporter who took the initiative and came up with a nifty idea for a story. Such stories are based on official or sanctioned leaks and always have an ulterior motive. This is not so much about informing an ignorant public about reality, rather it is either propaganda or signalling a shift in U.S. policy.

The New York Times published such a piece today under the title, Commando Network Coordinates Flow of Weapons in Ukraine, Officials Say. Ooohhh! Commando Networks. Sounds sexy and sinister

Let me give you an example. Letโ€™s say that the CIA bubba in Kiev gets word that Russians are massing 5 Battlion Tactical Groups northeast of Mariupol. Mr. CIA gives that intel, with precise geographic coordinates to his Ukrainian counterpart. One would expect the Ukrainians to launch some sort of attack with fixed wing aircraft or missiles or artillery or armored units on that Russian force. In the real case of Mariupol, Ukraine failed to stop the Russian offensive and the city was captured, along with 2500 members of Ukraineโ€™s AZOV Battalion.

The Ukrainian militaryโ€™s most acute training problem right now is that it is losing its most battle-hardened and well-trained forces, according to former American officials who have worked with the Ukrainians.

The former Trump administration official said Special Operations Command had small groups of American operators working in the field with Ukrainian officials before the war. The American teams were sometimes called Jedburgh, a reference to a World War II effort to train partisans behind enemy lines, the official said.

The modern special operations teams mainly focused on training in small-unit tactics but also worked on communications, battlefield medicine, reconnaissance and other skills requested by Ukrainian forces. Those efforts, the official said, ended before the Russian invasion but would have been helpful if they had continued during the war.

Having American trainers on the ground now might not be worth the risks, other former officials said, especially if it prompted an escalation by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

โ€œWould the enhancement of the training be worth the possible price that is going to have to be paid?โ€ Mr. Wise said. โ€œAn answer is probably not.โ€

 

Got that? The most acute problem is that the best Ukrainian troops are dead, wounded or captured. There are no first rate troops left to train. Oh my. That is a problem and the United States is not going to put any of our troops into harms way. That is, for now, the Biden Administrationโ€™s policy. Putting โ€œmodern special operations teamsโ€ on the ground to train Ukrainians is, per the NY Times piece, too great a risk and carries a price that is not worth the outcome.

Post-Dobbs, The Abortion Battle Hits Activist State Courts

On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court declared it was returning the authority to regulate or prohibit abortion โ€œto the people and their elected representatives.โ€ The abortion lobby, however, has no intention of leaving the legality of abortions to the American public. Instead, it will seek to create an abortion-on-demand regime via activist state judges. Countering this strategy must take priority, or Dobbs will be for naught.

 

In Dobbs v. Jackson Womenโ€™s Health Organization, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and held there is no federal constitutional right to abortion. Contrary to the misperception of some, the reversal of Roe and Casey did not make abortion illegal. Rather, Dobbs removed stringent judicial oversight on abortion laws.

 

Pre-Dobbs, under the controlling Casey framework, any law passed by a legislative body, whether Congress or a state legislature, was subjected to judicial scrutiny to determine whether the statute imposed an โ€œundue burdenโ€ on a womanโ€™s alleged right to have an abortion. That standard of judicial review prevented elected lawmakers from regulating abortion in most ways and left many universally supported laws, such as bans on abortion after 20 weeks, voided by judicial fiat.

 

What Dobbs did in overturning Roe and Casey was restore โ€œthe Constitutionโ€™s neutralityโ€ to the issue of abortion and return the โ€œauthority to address the issue of abortion through the processes of democratic self-government established by the Constitutionโ€ to the people.

 

The abortion lobby and the extreme abortion left do not want โ€œthe peopleโ€ to have a say, however, and have been working for years to ensure that if Roe and Casey were overturned, abortion-on-demand would remain the law of the land. To circumvent the democratic process, abortion apologists have been turning to activist state court judges for years.

 

Working to Lock Down State Courts

 

Long before Dobbs came down, the Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion advocacy organization, has been implementing this strategy. โ€œFor decades,โ€ the Center bragged recently, it โ€œhas brought cases in state courts to strengthen abortion rights and guarantee access beyond the federal systemโ€™s growing constraints.โ€ The state courts โ€œoffer wider possibilities,โ€ the Center explained, with each state having โ€œa unique constitution and court system that is free to protect reproductive autonomy under novel legal theories and rights.โ€

 

Currently, the high courts in at least nine states have held a right to abortion exists in the state constitution separate and distinct from the federal constitutional right to abortion declared in Roe and Casey, making the Supreme Courtโ€™s Friday decision in Dobbs irrelevant in those states.

 

That left-wing state justices in California and Massachusetts would find a right to abortion in their statesโ€™ constitutions should come as no surprise, but it is not merely blue states where activists have found success with this approach. I thought the pro abortionists reaction on the SCOTUS steps were lack luster and meant to show they did not care as much as we thought. Several NYC Election Sites Had 'No Republican Ballots' During Last Week's Primary

 

Last week's primary voting in New York City was a complete debacle - as the city's Board of Elections botched everything from polling locations opening late because of 'lost keys,' to missing equipment, to unannounced relocations of voting sites, to a lack of Republican ballots across at least three Big Apple election sites.

 

"We showed up to the poll site in Brooklyn, we showed up at 5 a.m. โ€ฆ and there was no key," Spencer Mestel, a freelance writer, told the New York Post on Tuesday afternoon, adding that he saw poll workers turn away an elderly woman with a walker because they couldn't get in.

 

"The police officer on site didnโ€™t have a key, the Board of Elections didnโ€™t give [the site coordinator] a key, I watched her call the Board of Election multiple times โ€ฆ [but] no one helped us," added the journalist who has served as a NYC election worker for the past decade.

 

The building was eventually unlocked at 7:30 a.m. by the building's superintendent - more than 90 minutes after voters should have been able to start casting ballots.

 

Meanwhile, the Board of Elections failed to deliver equipment to one south Brooklyn location

 

The BOE's response? Election day had gone "very smoothly" and voters had been notified of site changes.

"They told me โ€˜we donโ€™t have any Republican ballots,'" he added. "I said to the gentleman, โ€˜that is very concerning.โ€™"

 

The Post verified the lack of Republican ballots at the polling site Gavin visited.

 

"We couldnโ€™t find the ballots earlier, but we have them now," said a poll worker.

"This is the most important gubernatorial election of my lifetime because crime is on the ballot, bail reform is on the ballot, criminal justice is on the ballot," he said, adding "[Former Gov. We previously discussed the cases of attorneys Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman, who were accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail into a police vehicle in New York. They were facing domestic terrorism charges and the possibility of 30 years in jail. This week, the Biden Administration agreed to a massive reduction of the charges in a plea agreement that will likely result only in a couple years of jail time. What is particularly bizarre is that the plea agreement reduces an earlier plea agreement for a more serious offense.

 

The plea deal by the Justice Department is a breathtaking reduction in the charges and expected sentencing of the two lawyers.

 

Earlier, some of us were surprised that U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie upheld the $250,000 bail determination of U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Gold. Prosecutors presented evidence that the two attorneys were trying to distribute Molotov cocktails and suggested that Mattis did not appear rational. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed Judge Brodie and the two attorneys were sent back to jail. (Rahman's bail was paid for by friend and fellow attorney Salmah Rizvi, who served in the Defense Department and State Department during the Obama administration).

 

Notably, Rahman and Mattis pleaded guilty last year to one count of possessing and making an explosive device, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Now, however, they will be allowed to withdraw the earlier plea and instead plead guilty to conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail and damage the New York Police Department patrol car. That is a nosebleed of a drop in the severity and punishment for this violent attack.

 

It is a sharp contrast to the harsh position taken by the Biden Justice Department on many of those accused of rioting on January 6th. Attorney General Merrick Garland cited the threat to police officers in pledging an unprecedented effort to charge and convict those involved "on any level" in the riot.

 

Conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail and damage the New York Police Department patrol car does not quite capture what these two attorneys did during the violent riot in New York. Rahman was caught on video throwing the firebomb and then fleeing the scene. Colinford Mattis was accused of having a store of firebombs in his vehicle and was videotaped as he attempted to hand them out to other rioters to fuel further violence. Rahman later was unapologetic and declared to reporters that "the only way they hear us is through violence."

 

That does not seem the type of the suspects who would ordinarily garner deep sympathy from prosecutors. Yet, the Biden Administration walked back the charges, unraveled the earlier plea to a lesser offense, and told that court that the earlier charges would have resulted in "excessive sentencing" for the attorneys. Instead, they are supporting a maximum sentence of five years with a recommendation of between 18 to 24 months imprisonment.

Capitol Police Deputy Chief Sean Gallagher emailed top Schumer aide Kelly Fado, now the Senate's deputy sergeant of arms, at about 9:40 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2021 saying he wanted to "provide you visibility" to new intelligence that an FBI threat analysis center had received from a website owner, according to documents obtained by Just the News.

Theinformation explicitly warned that demonstrators had detailed maps of the tunnel systems around the Capitolfrequented by lawmakers and their staffs and they were plotting to create a "perimeter" for potential violence and to find "Democratic members early to block them from entering the Capitol." One point of entry the rioters were targeting was the Library of Congress, he warned.

"The owner of the website submitted an online tip to the FBI NTOC (National Threat Operations Center) stating that he has noticed a significant uptick in new visitors to his website," Gallagher wroteโ€ฆ

"Additionally," he said, "we have seen a huge uptick with reporting via open source of the groups intentions of forming a perimeter around the campus..Gallagher's email to Fado included several screen shots of web communications where demonstrators had detailed maps and discussed plotting specific actions, such as a plan to "block all the tunnel exits" and to ensure that legislators feel "our anger and resolve."

In the end, Maricopa County Allister Adel got it right.

 

But her resignation as the countyโ€™s top prosecutor comes late โ€“ and with a price.

 

Civil rights protesters unfairly charged as street gang members. Drunken drivers and domestic abusers allowed to escape punishment due to botched prosecutions.

 

The nationโ€™s third largest prosecutorial agency left to drift for lack of competent leadership and courts left to sort out whether defendants got a fair shake in light of Adelโ€™s mounting problems (and how much taxpayers will have to pay for those problems).

 

Victims left to wonder as well.

 

And a question โ€“ an unfair one, to be sure โ€“ that will dog the next women who seeks to lead the Maricopa County Attorneyโ€™s Office: Will she be equipped to handle the job, voters will inevitably wonder.

 

What a shame that it has come to this.

 

Was Allister Adel ever really up to the job?

Adel was appointed to the job in 2019 to replace Bill Montgomery, becoming the first woman to lead the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. At the time, her qualifications seemed thin. But the Republican-dominated Board of Supervisors appeared more focused on selecting someone who could win an election than someone who could actually run a major law enforcement agency.

 

She went on to win in 2020. But it quickly became apparent that she was in over her head. Prosecutors went after 15 social justice protesters with a vengeance, charging them as members of a criminal street gang in order to exact a harsher penalty.

 

By February 2021, amid calls for her resignation, Adel dropped all charges against the protesters, blaming her staff for bungling the case. It would not be the last time that the buck bypassed our troubled top prosecutor.

 

By August, Adel had secretly checked herself into a treatment facility, to deal with alcohol abuse, an eating disorder and general anxiety but insisted, upon her release, that she was up to the job.

 

She wasnโ€™t and probably never had been. But she clung fiercely to the job.

 

She rejected calls to resign, blamed her staff

She ignored Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzoneโ€™s late-summer counsel that she take a leave of absence to deal with her problems. She assured Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates in November that everything was fine, despite staffers reporting slurred speech, long absences and questions about her general demeanor.

Russia Demands Lithuania Lift "Openly Hostile" Blockade; Panic Buying Ensues

 

Update (1100ET): The Russian Foreign Ministry has responded to Lithuania's partial blockade of Kaliningrad, writing in a statement that they consider the "provocative measures" to be "openly hostile" and warning that the Kremlin may take action to "protect its national interests."

 

Kaliningrad is sandwiched between the EU and NATO members Poland and Lithuania. Supplies from Russia are delivered via rail and gas pipelines through Lithuania - which announced last week that it was banning the rail transit of goods subject to EU sanctions, which include coal, advanced technology, metals and construction materials.

 

"If in the near future cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation through Lithuania is not restored in full, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," the statement reads.

 

They have demanded that Lithuania immediately lift the ban on a number of goods to the Kaliningrad region.

 

Earlier Monday, the Kremlin called Lithuania's announcement "unprecedented" and "in violation of everything there is."

 

"The situation is more than serious and it requires a very deep analysis before formulating any measures and decisions," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in a statement to the press.

 

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said they were simply complying with sanctions imposed by the EU, and that they were taken after "consultation with the European Commission and under its guidelines."

 

"Sanctioned goods (will) no longer be allowed to transit Lithuanian territory," he added.

Recording a frame about every 60 seconds, this image also shows how red the Sun can look while low on the horizon. The featured montage was taken from Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, the day after June's Strawberry Moon, a full moon dubbed a supermoon due to its slightly larger-than-usual angular size. This Strawberry Supermoon is seen rising behind the Devil's Saddle, a mountain named for the unusual moon-sized dip seen just to the right of the rising moon. A shrinking line-of-sight through planet Earth's dense and dusty atmosphere shifted the moonlight from strawberry red through honey-colored and paler yellowish hues. That change seems appropriate for a northern June Full Moon also known as the Strawberry or Honey Moon. A Thunder Supermoon the third of four supermoons in 2022 will occur later this month.

Dave Clark, who led the transformation of Amazon. com Inc. from a buying portal to one of the worldโ€™s leading transportation and logistics firms, said Friday that he has resigned from the company after 23 years, effective July 1. No successor has been named.

 

Clark, 48, announced his departure in a Twitter post. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy disclosed Clarkโ€™s decision in a blog post on the companyโ€™s site. Jassy said that Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is โ€œtrying to be thoughtful in our plans for Daveโ€™s succession and any changes we make.โ€ Jassy said he will provide an update on succession plans within the next few weeks.

 

Clark, who headed Amazonโ€™s Worldwide Consumer unit that included the retail platform and the supporting transport and logistics functions, said he had thought about leaving the company for some time. He gave no specific reason for departing other than to say it was time to try something new.

 

A source close to Amazon said that Clarkโ€™s announcement came as a surprise to everyone at the company. The source declined to speculate on the reasons behind the departure.

 

Clark was promoted to his current role in August 2020. The following February, Chairman and CEO Jeff Bezos, whom Clark worked closely with for more than two decades, stepped down to become executive chairman.

 

Clarkโ€™s two-year stint was marked by significant change within Amazon and for its business. Besides Bezosโ€™ departure as CEO, the company has been buffeted by significant inflationary pressures that have crimped its profit margins. The company posted a huge net loss in the first quarter, as well as a decline in operating income. It is also looking to scale back, albeit moderately, the size of its fulfillment and distribution network after nearly doubling it during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Clark invented the present-day Amazon transport and logistics network, which has been assembled mostly to provide one- to two-day deliveries of items ordered by subscribers to its Prime service. Amazon today has an estimated 96 planes in its fleet. It also has hundreds of tractors and thousands of trailers that integrate with its flight operations. During Clarkโ€™s tenure, Amazon opened its long-planned $1.5 billion air cargo hub at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport.

 

Clark joined Amazon in 2001 after completing his MBA at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Clark was moving up through the operations and fulfillment ranks when in January 2013 he was named senior vice president of worldwide operations, which included what was then a fledgling shipping and logistics business that exclusively outsourced its transportation services.

 

That all changed during a disastrous 2013 peak shipping season, when 300,000 parcels, most of which were to be delivered by UPS Inc. (NYSE: UPS), didnโ€™t reach their destinations in time for Christmas. Amazon was furious with UPS over the debacle, although it had flooded the carrier with an avalanche of holiday packages at the last minute and gave UPS little visibility in the process. UPS, which already had endured a difficult December due to bad weather in parts of the country, suffered a reputational black eye that took several peak seasons to recover from.

 

Amazon had plans on the drawing board to build a shipping network. However, the 2013 experience catalyzed the company to launch the initiative almost immediately, and to push it faster and further than what was originally conceived. Clark led the rapid-fire building of sortation centers, acquisition of trailers and recruitment of drivers. It has been said Amazonโ€™s transport and logistics network would be nowhere nearly as formidable today had Clark not been there to shepherd it.
