Spanish operation takes down police and customs officers helping ship cocaine and hashish into Europe

 

With the support of Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Centre, the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) and National Police (Policía Nacional) have dismantled a drugs trafficking network which allegedly relied on corrupt law enforcement and customs officers to ship hundreds of millions of euros’ worth of cocaine and hashish into Western Europe.

 

A total of 61 individuals were arrested for their involvement in this criminal operation, including five officers from the Civil Guard, one from the National Police and one from customs, who were identified thanks to the collaboration with Europol and Eurojust.

 

These arrests follow an 18-month long investigation into two criminal gangs, known as ‘Clan de Tanger’ and ‘Clan del Sur’, who are believed to have smuggled over 16 tonnes of cocaine and 150 tonnes of hashish via the Strait of Gibraltar into Spain for further distribution across Europe. The drugs were hidden among shipments of tomatoes, watermelons and melons. The criminal group dismantled is considered to be the most active network operating around the Port of Algeciras.

 

The corrupt law enforcement and customs officers were paid by the criminal organisation to make sure that the drugs were not intercepted as they were smuggled in the Spanish port of Algeciras.

 

In the frame of the investigation, the Spanish authorities conducted 34 raids which led to:

 

The arrest of 61 individuals, including 7 under European Arrest Warrants issued by other countries;

The seizure of 26 properties valued at over EUR 3 million;

The seizure of 17 vehicles valued at over EUR 400 000;

The seizure in cash of over EUR 1 million;

The seizure of over 83 tonnes of hashish and 9 tonnes of cocaine.

 

Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Centre supported the investigation by providing actionable intelligence and analytical support. On 11 May 2022, two Europol teams were deployed to Spain on the action day to facilitate the extensive exchange of information and provide forensic support for the seized electronic devices.

 

Cases such as this one involving law enforcement and customs officers show how much corruption has infiltrated society. In its 2021 Serious Organised Crime Threat Assessment, Europol highlighted that over 60 % of criminal groups in the EU engage in corruption, making it a key threat to be addressed in the fight against serious organised crime.

 

Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Centre has set up a dedicated team of experts – known as Analysis Project Corruption - to put a stop to it.

In late 2017, Lebanon signed a gas exploration and production agreement with a consortium comprising the French company Total, the Italian Eni, and the Russian Novatek for gas blocks 4 and 9.

 

However, though committed to its exploration deal with Lebanon, Total stressed that it would not start operations on Block 9 until the Israeli-Lebanese maritime dispute was resolved, according to MEE.

 

Asked why Total refused to explore gas for Lebanon in Block 9 although "Israel' has been able to convince Energean Power's vessel to develop the disputed Karish gas field for "Israel", Abi-Khalil accused the US of pressuring international companies to operate Karish oil gas in disputed maritime borders.

 

"The US seeks to hand over influence to the Israeli enemy in the Arab Mashreq, i.e. to become a leading reference for all countries in the region," Abi-Khalil told Al Mayadeen English.

 

After the US recognized "Jerusalem" as the capital of the entity, "the Knesset passed the Jewish National Law, which proves the enemy’s implementation of the policy of making everything an Israeli and Judaization inside occupied Palestine," Abi-Khalil added.

 

Abi-Khalil stressed that the Israeli enemy has moved to consolidate its influence abroad through the implementation of regional foreign policy, proving once again the "political-diplomatic capabilities of the enemy and its ability to persuade Western companies, including the Energean Power vessel, to explore Karish."

 

"This is due to the pressures exerted by the United States and the Zionist lobby on international companies that share with their economic interests and material capabilities," she told Al Mayadeen English.

 

Relaunching negotiations

 

Hochstein landed in Beirut on Monday and met on Tuesday with President Michel Aoun and other senior government officials and parliamentarians as part of the indirect negotiations to demarcate the maritime border.

 

President Aoun received Hochstein in the presence of the US Ambassador to Beirut Dorothy Shea, and Aoun informed Hochstein of Lebanon's official position regarding the demarcation of the maritime borders and stressed Lebanon's sovereign rights to water and natural resources.

 

Al Mayadeen Arabic correspondent, citing information obtained, pointed out that Lebanon will demand the preservation of the entire Qana field, and thus adherence to all oil wealth, even beyond the line 23, rejecting the line previously drawn up by Hochstein in February, whereby he cut off parts of Block no. 8.

 

The correspondent stated that Aoun "responded orally to Hochstein's previous offer and presented a new proposal," adding that Aoun "requested prompt answers through Hochstein from the other side, i.e. Tel Aviv."

 

Indirect talks between Lebanon and "Israel" fizzled out in 2021 after Lebanon pushed its claim in the disputed zone from a boundary known as "Line 23" further south to "Line 29", adding around 1,400 square km (540 square miles) to its maritime borders, including part of Karish.

 

To overcome the impasse, according to media reports, Hochstein proposed a field swap that would create an S-shaped boundary instead of a straight line, but Lebanon did not officially agree to the proposal.

 

Two unnamed official sources told Reuters on June 14 that President Aoun would demand from the US energy envoy that indirect talks resume as soon as possible and that "Israel" stop all works at Karish until negotiations are concluded, the two officials said.

 

Asked if Hochstein's visit to Beirut can relaunch indirect maritime border negotiations, Abi-Khalil said it is up to Hoshstein's proposals.

 

"Re-launching the negotiations is related to the proposals that will be presented by the American envoy, which must take into account the Lebanese interest," said Abi-Khalil.

 

"Views united on the decision taken by His Excellency the President of the Republic, which strengthens the Lebanese position," she added.

Those who seek to destroy or delegitimize the Supreme Court for upholding the Constitution are no better than those who desire to overturn or delegitimize presidential elections. In fact, they probably pose a greater long-term threat to American “democracy.”

 

Now, if you believe the above contention is hyperbole, consider that many leftists aren’t merely advocating for court-packing or nullification of the Dobbs decision; they justify those attacks with a litany of other grievances about the constitutional order.

 

Even as the Supreme Court relinquished its power, and threw the abortion issue–unmentioned anywhere in the Constitution–back to the voters, a horde of j-school graduates and politicians, either ignorant of basic civics or contemptuous of them, descended with panic-stricken warnings about the demise of “democracy.” Almost none of their objections were grounded in any sort of legal arguments about the alleged constitutionality of terminating unwanted human beings. Instead, their case centered around the specious idea that the court had undermined the will of voters by no longer dictating abortion policy by judicial fiat.

 

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who, at this point, sounds virtually indistinguishable from Senate leadership or the authoritarians writing at The Washington Post, points outthat seven of the nine justices on the court “were appointed by a party that hasn’t won a popular vote more than once in 30 years,” that one of their seats “was stolen,” and that “several lied to Congress to secure their appointment…”

 

None of those contentions are true. Every single justice on the court, including the ones Democrats preemptively smeared as deviants to undermine the legitimacy of the court, was nominated using the prescribed constitutional method that is used by every party. And every senator who voted to confirm those justices did so using the only legal process available to them. The “popular vote” is not a real thing.

 

When Democrats win both the Senate and the White House, they have the power to nominate and confirm any justice they desire. But they also seem to be under the impression that when they win only the White House, they’re still authorized to dictate whom Republicans are allowed to confirm (as was the case with Merrick Garland). And when they are completely out of national power, they simply reject the legitimacy of justices who do not meet their invented, evolving, extraconstitutional standards. Democrats treat every victory of the opposition as dubiously attained.

 

“The Founding Fathers wrote a constitution designed to prevent a tyranny of the majority,” says former Barack Obama adviser David Axelrod.“But what happens when you have a tyranny of the minority, gaming the system to promote a radical agenda that flouts the will of the majority under the guise of constitutionalism?” Similar assertions were repeated across the left-wing punditsphere this weekend.

 

Axelrod, in true Obama fashion, begs the question. But the fact that the Electoral Collegedoesn’t align with the “popular vote” isn’t a disqualifying aspect of American politics, it is the very point. If the Electoral College always synchronized with the outcome of the nonexistent direct democratic national tallies, it wouldn’t need to exist. It isn’t a loophole; it is a deliberately created mechanism that stops a handful of states from dominating policy. (Not only is the national vote immaterial, but we really have no idea what one would look like because (winning) candidates do not run up scores in big states, they campaign nationally.)

 

Though I do wonder what remedy Axelrod or Ocasio-Cortez have in mind for this supposed problem? Should the GOP abdicate the presidency to a Democrat every time it fails to win the nonexistent “popular vote”? Should Republican senators from smaller states ignore their constituents and ask Elizabeth Warren for permission to support judicial nominees? Sounds like one-party rule…..

The top commander of U.S. special forces Admiral Eric T. Olson said he would like to see female Navy SEALs in combat roles.

He said female SEALs could aid overseas efforts by securing unique access with local women in societies where the U.S. military is operating.

'I don't think the idea is to select G.I. Jane and put her through SEAL training,' Admiral Olson told ABC News.

'But there are a number of things that a man and a woman can do together that two guys can't.'

Admiral Olson was referring to the 1997 film G.I. Jane, where Demi Moore becomes a Navy SEAL despite everyone else expecting her to fail.

He said he is interested to see what female SEALs are ‘made of’ and seeing them have the ‘courage and intellectual agility’ to perform well.

Women currently serve with U.S. special forces as information and civil affairs specialists, reported ABC.

But there are no female SEALs, Green Berets, Rangers or Marine special operators thanks to a combat exclusion policy from 1994.

This prevents women from being assigned to ground combat units.

Last March the Military Leadership Diversity Commission suggested the end of this policy.

However ‘cultural support teams’ were created to be attached to SEAL and Green Beret teams last year and are already in action.

Admiral Olson told ABC that 56 women graduated from this school last week and will all be in Afghanistan by the end of next month.

‘We don't have nearly enough and we're too late bringing them into what it is we have them doing,’ he told ABC.

A team of U.S. Navy SEALs killed former Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in May.

Admiral Olson said up to 4,000 missions of a similar nature were conducted last year alone.

He made an audience laugh at the 2011 Aspen Security Forum by comparing his job to that of Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai.

‘There's a lot of warlord management,’ he told ABC. ‘It's a paella and at the end of the day it tastes good, but it's tough to put together sometimes.’

The unit’s annual revenue is USD 500 million and the plant has over 600 employees. Tozier warned a decision to declare lithium salts hazardous would prompt an exodus of EU producers including battery recyclers.

Defeated House Democrat from Oregon warns about rise of party's 'socialist wing'

 

After redistricting carved up the House seat in Oregon that centrist Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader has represented for nearly 14 years, he is refusing to line up behind a more liberal party member who beat him in the primary.

On May 17, Schrader fell victim to a redrawn map that chopped up the 5th Congressional District that he currently represents, which includes parts of Oregon's central coast. Oregon gained a House seat due to strong population growth in the decade before the 2020 census, giving it six. But the newly configured district Schrader ran in proved less hospitable than his current one to the 70-year-old's brand of business-friendly centrism, which has included opposition to proposed hikes of the federal minimum wage and corporate regulations.

Schrader recently gave his first interview since his primary loss to Jamie McLeod-Skinner, an attorney who had the backing of several liberal Democrats and organizations. Schrader made it clear he doesn’t think voters chose the right candidate in a year in which it appears Republicans are going to surge back to win the House and Senate.

“I think red wave begins in Oregon — Oregon’s 5th District,” Schrader told a local news outlet last month. “That’s unfortunate.”

 

Despite the convincing win for McLeod-Skinner — she bested Schrader 56.9% to 42.7% — the departing incumbent said he doesn’t think his opponent is going to fare well in November’s general election, and polling from McLeod-Skinner’s allies in early June agree with Schrader’s assessment of a candidate who ran to his left….

 

Schrader said he isn’t getting ready to change his party affiliation or even endorse a Republican, but he said he doesn’t feel like he fits in with what today’s Democratic Party looks like.

Wikipedia editors removed the entry for Rosemont Seneca Partners earlier this week on the ground that it was “not notable,” archived comments from its Talk Page reveal.

 

The deletion happened Wednesday. The investment company co-founded by Hunter Biden has been at the heart of numerous questions surrounding his overseas business dealings.

 

“This organization is only mentioned in connection with its famous founders, Hunter Biden and Christopher Heinz,” said a Wiki editor identified only as Alex who additionally warned that “keeping it around” ran the risk of the page becoming “a magnet for conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden.”

 

Arguments to merge the story with Hunter Biden’s official wikipedia page were also overruled.

 

The brief article was thin on details and in bad need of an overhaul, but did provide information about the company’s founding by Hunter Biden, Devon Archer and Chris Heinz.

 

Wikipedia has tilted so far left in recent years that its co-founder Larry Sanger now says the site can not longer be trusted and has become “propaganda.”

 

“There’s a very big, nasty, complex game being played behind the scenes to make the article say what somebody wants them to say,” Sanger said last year.

 

Activist editors on the site have long tried to have tried to delete an entry for ‘Mass killings under communist regimes’ — though for now it remains online.

 

Critics said the Rosemont decision showed a double standard.

 

“If a Trump-linked company had its Wikipedia page wiped or one from the Russia probe, it’s more than a safe bet to say that CNN would be dedicating multiple reporters to following the internet trail,” said Curtis Houck, Managing Editor of the Media Research Center told The Post.

Wildlife authorities in California are trying to remove a baby mountain lion after it wandered into a San Mateo County high school.

 

The lion was discovered just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in a classroom at Pescadero High School as the custodial staff was preparing to open, a San Mateo County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said.

 

"No students or staff were ever in danger as the school was not in session yet," the spokesperson said.

 

It's not clear how the lion entered the school. It's currently confined to the classroom.

 

Officials with the state's Department of Fish and Wildlife are at the school, located about 60 miles southwest of San Jose, trying to safely and humanely remove the animal.

 

They tried to "let it out on its own," but the lion did not leave because it appears to be "lost and scared," the sheriff's office spokesperson said.

 

The strange encounter did not delay the start of the school day. Students and staff are currently inside the building but are not using the classroom the lion has occupied, the sheriff's office said.

Pentagon investigates suspected ‘insider’ attack

 

A member of the US military might have set off a Syria base blast

 

Two military law enforcement agencies are investigating a service member over the April incident at Green Village, a US outpost in northern Syria, the Pentagon acknowledged on Monday. The explosions, initially thought to be an artillery attack, were set off by someone inside the base. Four troops were injured.

 

The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) are “conducting a joint investigation of the incident. A possible suspect, a US service member, has been identified,” CID spokesman Patrick Barnes said in a statement. “No further information will be released at this time.”

 

The suspect has returned to the US, but his or her name has not been released, according to AP. No charges have been filed yet.

 

US bases in Syria and Iraq have repeatedly come under attack by mortars and rockets over the past several years, which the Pentagon has blamed on “pro-Iranian” Shia militias. Initial reports by the Combined Joint Task Force Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) attributed the April 7 incident in Green Village to “two rounds of indirect fire” fired from the outside.

 

A week later, however, the US Central Command said that after a further investigation, they believed it was “deliberate placement of explosive charges by an unidentified individual(s) at an ammunition holding area and shower facility.”

 

Security footage from the base showed “a figure moving quickly” through Green Village at the time of the attack, which happened during the night, according to CNN. Four soldiers were treated for “traumatic brain injuries” and returned to duty by the end of April.

BREVARD, NC: "Three men were injured following a plane crash in North Carolina Thursday night, according to Capt. Matthew Chase Owen with Transylvania County Sheriff's Office. San Francisco bans natural gas in buildings.

 

“The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to ban natural gas in new buildings, legislation that will apply to more than 54,000 homes and 32 million square feet of commercial space in the city’s development pipeline,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

 

San Francisco has already banned natural gas in any new city-owned buildings. The new order will extend to any buildings that apply for a building permit after June 30. Supporters say the measure will improve indoor air quality, increase building safety and reduce emissions.

 

“Natural gas accounts for roughly 40% of San Francisco’s overall emissions of greenhouse gases and 80% of building emissions,” the Chronicle reports.

 

Investors expect Biden's win to accelerate a shift to renewables.

 

“One of the best ways to make money on Wall Street recently has been to bet against the fossil-fuel industry and buy renewable stocks,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

 

Now, some top investors are saying that they expect this pattern to accelerate as a Biden administration, as the administration tightens regulations and issues executive orders limiting new drilling on public lands. At the same time, big investors have moved assets away from fossil fuel producers and many small investors have poured money into sustainable funds.

 

“I think we are going to have a much more rapid transition to a net-zero [carbon] economy than most people expect,” Robert Litterman, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. investor, told the Wall Street Journal. Litterman is now working on a strategy with Kepos Capital to profit off the transition to renewables.

Let them 'refuse' to protect Texas. Texas will eliminate all the cartel gangs on it's land border with Mexico within a week or two. AMLO will recognize Texas as a sovereign Republic and make treaties and security agreements. Mexicans living near (60-100 miles) the Texas border will finally have celebrations.
