Daniel Easterman, in response to the incident, created a free script that automatically reports and blocks bots.

 

“When you see such a dramatic increase in followers, it’s usually somebody manipulating the system for commercial gain,” Easterman said. “So that could trigger Twitter to automatically flag that as suspicious activity and suspend the activist’s account.”

 

This would not be the first time something like this happens: In 2017, Iona Craig, who was reporting on the war on Yemen, was spammed with thousands of fake followers - the fake followers came mainly from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

 

Jones says this is a form of suppression of free speech on social media; he wrote on Twitter:

 

"Some suggest it’s a means to degrade the algorithmic quality of a Twitter account so that it possibly gets suspended; some suggest it’s others trying to boost popularity of an account. When it’s unsolicited, as in this case, I tend to think it’s more of a targeting operation. I am naturally cynical, but most people who get a sudden influx of fake followers feel unnerved and uncomfortable. If that fact is widely known, it functions as a tool of surveillance and potentially intimidation (e.g., you are being watched). It also makes many people mute their accounts for a bit which has a censorship effect.”

 

The murder of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, furthermore, was not safe from the swarms of Israeli bots. In the last week, Jones detected 2,800 fake accounts on the prowl for pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist Twitter accounts. Most of the accounts' bios are written in English with a location: "Israel."

 

The reason for the influx of followers remains unclear. “Those who get followed understandably find it intimidating, as if a form of surveillance or a technique to try and degrade [the] quality of an account with low-quality follows,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “The fact remains, these are clearly fake accounts and ruin the experience of Twitter.”

 

Palestinian digital-rights experts have for a long time condemned the increasing censorship of Palestinian content on the internet.

 

During the May 2021 war on Gaza and the storming of the Al-Aqsa mosque, Palestinian activists also reported that social media platforms were removing their content on Israeli violence and ethnic cleansing in the name of violation of community guidelines. Last month, activists in Jordan reported that posts on Israeli violence in Al-Aqsa were taken down and the respective accounts were blocked. According to 7amleh, The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, the Israeli cyber unit in the government sends content-removal requests to Facebook, Google and Youtube, particularly against Palestinian content.

 

Cyber censorship and intimidation are just one of the many tacts used by the Israeli establishment to silence their critics, cyber cracking down on netizens exposing Israeli violence and colonial aggression.

Even with Donald Trump not in office, QAnon beliefs continue to infect politics.

Why it matters

 

The debunked conspiracy will be in play during the upcoming midterm elections, but that doesn't mean you have to fall for it.

 

QAnon, a fringe right-wing conspiracy theory centered on former President Donald Trump, didn't fade away when he left office. Instead, belief in the wild conspiracy persists and continues to play a part in the political discourse, whether Americans realize it or not.

 

The QAnon conspiracy, which first surfaced in October 2017, falsely purports that Trump was fighting a hidden war against a cabal of Satanist pedophiles in Hollywood and the Democratic Party. The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute a nonprofit that researches the intersection of religion, culture and public policy released a study in February showing that nearly 16% of Americans believe the core QAnon conspiracy.

 

"QAnon has evolved from a movement centered around Trump leading a secret military intelligence operation to save the world, into a movement that not only doesn't need Trump but doesn't even need the iconography it developed over the past four years," said Mike Rothschild, conspiracy researcher and author of The Storm Is Upon Us, which provides a history of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

 

Conspiracy theories can be dangerous and even deadly as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaccine misinformation playing a role in some people succumbing to the virus. Despite being repeatedly debunked, belief in the QAnon conspiracy continues to infect areas of politics beyond Trump. So far this year, aspects of the conspiracy have seeped into protests, a Supreme Court hearing and legislation.

 

"Its mythology of secret pedophile rings suppressed cures and technology, massive corruption and fraud propelling a [purportedly] decrepit Joe Biden into office, and COVID being a hoax, have infected every aspect of mainstream conservative politics and culture," Rothschild added.

 

With the midterm elections coming up, the conspiracy is likely to continue popping up in campaigns and on social media feeds. Being able to recognize its influence may make it easier to spot, and avoid, in the future.

Ateenage boy accused of raping and strangling a therapist who tried to help him in a juvenile probation center should be tried as an adult, the woman's distraught husband begged the judge.

 

The woman survived the alleged attack, which police say occurred in a locked room at the juvenile probation center in the city of Katy, just west of Houston, Texas, nearly a year ago, but is said to be so traumatized she can no longer leave her home.

 

Neither the therapist nor her young former patient have been identified, but now the woman's husband, James Haak, has spoken out to the press to try to ensure the 16-year-old is treated as an adult by the justice system.

 

The judge is currently deciding how the boy will be tried by the courts, and no trial has begun.

 

The teenager has been charged with assaulting and harassing the Harris County public servant, but if he is convicted as a juvenile he may be released by the time he reaches 18, in just a couple of years' time.

 

Whereas, if tried as an adult, he faces a minimum sentence of five years—but could face up to life behind bars.

 

Haak told Fox 26: "The only remedy that she has in this case is that he be incarcerated; we don't think that he could be rehabilitated.

 

"Let's face it, she was beat up. She was locked in a room, beat up, and raped. She didn't have a way to call for help; they had given them a radio, which he ripped the batteries out of."

 

"She can't be in public, she doesn't trust men. She can't do therapy anymore. I doubt that she will ever be able to do therapy with a male in a locked room, and that's what confidentially is all about."

 

She has had to quit the job she worked so hard for, Haak added, saying: "She put a lot of herself into the job, and he took that away."

 

Describing his wife's desire to help troubled children after raising her own family, he said she went back to school after a nearly 20-year career in oil and gas. She gained a master's degree and a license in family therapy, and began working at the juvenile probation center for Harris County.

 

The juvenile had been due to speak with a therapist and requested one who could Spanish. Haak's wife went to meet him, but police claim once they were locked in a room together he raped and strangled her.

 

 

 

The court is set to reconvene on Tuesday, where the judge will decide on how the teenager should be tried.

The turnout was pretty high.

It was a recall election, meaning a petition went around asking if the governor should be removed, and enough people said yes, so it triggered a special election.

 

But the California voting system, especially post-Covid is deeply flawed. Mail-in ballots are sent whether you request one or not, by law. For instance, I specifically requested no mail-in ballot, and still got one. Votes changed in the middle of the night, dominion machines are used all over the state, ballots were found in a car, It was a total cluster fuck. In the end, Newsome survived. He's up for re-election this November. I have no reason to doubt his reelection.

The precipitous and chaotic American abandonment of Afghanistan, without proper consultation and support for allies, less than a year ago was a great shock to the NATO alliance, raising grave doubts about the judgment, stability and reliability of the U.S. as leader of the free world. The resulting cracks in the alliance were only papered over by the blunt truth that our allies had nowhere to go outside the security umbrella provided by the U.S. under Article 5.

 

Now, in the rapidly changing landscape of the Ukraine war, we are seeing ominous signs that the U.S. may be leading NATO in the direction of an even worse strategic humiliation — one that can result in a dramatic reconfiguration of the world’s geopolitical structure.

 

The New York Times reported recently on a June 16 visit to Kyiv by leaders of four NATO countries — France, Germany, Italy and Romania — during which they delivered a dual message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the more public and cosmetic level, the Western leaders demonstrated their support against Russian aggression by offering Ukraine a path to European Union membership but they “did not promise the country additional heavy weapons on the scale it says it needs to repel a bloody Russian advance in the East.”

 

The European leaders carefully adhered to the Biden administration’s policy by insisting “they were not pressing Mr. Zelensky to accept a peace deal with Moscow,” according to the Times. But, as reflected in the palpable disappointment of the Ukrainians, the EU’s key leaders were clearly signaling the limits of their own support.

 

This new European stance now places the Biden administration on the horns of a possibly insoluble dilemma, as David Goldman reported in a recent Asia Times article. With the war having reached a critical stage and the world economy reeling from supply shocks in energy and food previously supplied by Russia and Ukraine, Goldman asserts that America’s boasts of “driving Putin from power, destroying Russia’s capacity to make war, and halving the size of Russia’s economy look ridiculous in retrospect.”

 

China has departed from its early public neutrality regarding the war by reaffirming its partnership with Russia and effectively calling for a compromise peace — as have others, including, evidently, our European allies. The pressure is mounting on President Biden, who until now has brooked no dissent from Ukraine’s demand for the full restoration of its pre-2014 borders.

 

A slippery slope filled with a series of bad choices awaits the Biden administration. A compromise peace, which much of the world apparently desires for various self-interested reasons, inevitably would begin with negotiations. Unless Russia is allowed to continue its territorial gains during the negotiations, a ceasefire would be required — and historically, these involve freezing the existing territorial division between combatants for the duration. As we have learned from Korea, the Middle East, and other such arrangements, these temporary demarcation lines often evolve into de facto permanent borders.

 

Russia has made strategic territorial gains, so such an outcome would be disastrous for Ukraine — and humiliating for the United States. Yet, since European leaders and the U.S. so far have refused to supply the arsenal of modern weaponry that Ukraine has said it needs to survive, it is difficult to see any other scenario unfolding.

The justices at oral argu­ment seemed genu­inely concerned that a broad ruling on public carry would embroil them in all kinds of minu­tiae about where guns can be prohib­ited — campuses, subway cars, Times Square on New Year’s Eve, etc. I cannot believe that they have much appet­ite for trans­form­ing every federal district court judge in the coun­try into a gun zoning czar. COHEN: You have writ­ten a great deal on the Second Amend­ment and how poli­cy­makers can and should approach the tension between gun rights and gun regu­la­tions. One article that caught my eye, posted last year, advoc­ated for an “equi­lib­rium adjust­ment” approach to Second Amend­ment law, a sort of slid­ing scale of reas­on­able­ness that would presum­ably protect some exist­ing gun laws while strik­ing down others. MILLER: The primary point I wanted to make in that article is that if the Court ends up lean­ing heav­ily or exclus­ively on text, history, and tradi­tion to decide Second Amend­ment cases, the process of reas­on­ing from analogy from those sources has to apply equally on both sides of the rights/regu­la­tion equa­tion. The Court has firmly rejec­ted argu­ments that only 18th-century weapons are protec­ted by the Second Amend­ment. But that argu­ment should apply to regu­la­tions too

— more than just those regu­la­tions that exis­ted in the 18th century are consti­tu­tional. So, if the Court holds that new kinds of weapons

— like 9-milli­meter pistols

— are “similar” enough to histor­ical weapons to count as an “arm” under the Second Amend­ment, the Court should say new kinds of regu­la­tions

— like prohib­it­ing guns on the subway

Greater Sydney facing 'life-threatening emergency' weather event as thousands told to evacuate

 

Thousands of people have been told to leave their homes across Sydney as a dangerous weather event, expected to linger until Tuesday, escalates. And the next 24 hours are critical.

SAN ANTONIO – Two men were sentenced today for conspiring to provide material support to the designated foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham/Syria (ISIS).

 

Kristopher Sean Matthews, aka Ali Jibreel, 36, of South Carolina, was sentenced to 240 months in prison and Jaylyn Christopher Molina (aka Abdur Rahim), 24, of Cost, TX, was sentenced to 216 months in prison.

 

According to court documents, since May 2019, Matthews conspired with Molina to provide services to ISIS by administering an encrypted, members-only chat group for persons who supported ISIS ideology; by collecting, generating, and disseminating pro-ISIS propaganda; and by disseminating firearms training materials and bomb-making instructions.

 

On November 24, 2020, and January 25, 2021, Matthews and Molina, respectively, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS. In addition, Molina pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. Both men have remained in federal custody since their arrests on September 21, 2020. Molina was sentenced to 216 months in prison on the terrorism charge and another 216 months in prison on the child pornography charge. Both sentences for Molina were ordered to run concurrently.

He ended his tweet thread with "I am ashamed that I did not share this publicly until now. It most likely makes me a clown myself. But brass tacks, I didn’t, and I’m sorry."

 

After Johnson's thread, Media Matters reached out with legal threats. Attorney's for Media Matters said that Johnson was "in violation of the Transition Agreement and General Release signed by Johnson upon his departure from the media enterprise. Johnson, the attorney states, was fired for cause.

 

"As a result of your actions," the letter reads, "MMFA has suffered and will continue to suffer reputational injury," and demands that Johnson delete the tweets.

 

The attorney further states that Johnson will no longer be entitled to any health insurance payments due to this violation and his tweets, whether he deletes the tweets or not.

Some history on M23 and the DR Congo

 

The M23, a mainly Congolese Tutsi group of militants, is one of more than 120 other armed groups active in eastern DRC.

 

In 2012, a joint offensive by UN troops and the Congolese army put an end to the rebellion, but the M23 resumed fighting last year, accusing the government in Congo of not respecting a 2009 agreement under which its fighters were to be blended with the army.

 

Local sources reported in April that M23 rebels have taken control of several villages in eastern DR Congo after fighting with government troops in the Rutshuru region.

 

At the end of May, the DRC army confirmed that it was holding two Rwandan troops, a day after Kigali accused it of supporting the rebels who seized them.

 

Rwanda claimed that the two soldiers were kidnapped by a Hutu rebel group operating in eastern DRC. However, the DRC army, on the other hand, claimed the soldiers were trespassing on its territory and had been apprehended by civilians.

 

Relations between the DRC and Rwanda have been strained since the overwhelming entry of Rwandan Hutus suspected of slaying Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide in the eastern DRC.

“A dozen CEOs of America’s largest utility companies told me earlier this year that my plan would reduce the average family’s annual utility bills by $500 and accelerate our transition from energy produced by autocrats.”

 

— President Biden, in an opinion article titled “My Plan for Fighting Inflation,” published in the Wall Street Journal, May 30

 

This line caught our attention. After all, the typical U.S. family spends $2,060 on average per year for home utility bills, according to the most recent estimate published by EnergyStar.gov. So Biden is promising big savings.

 

But it turns out the White House has been engaging in some inflation of its own.

 

The Facts

If that $500 figure appears familiar, it’s because you heard something similar in the president’s State of the Union address on March 1. He said his American Rescue Plan would “cut energy costs for families an average of $500 a year by combating climate change.”

 

That figure was a reference to a report published in October by the Rhodium Group, a research firm. Rhodium predicted that if Biden’s climate change policies were adopted, by 2030 “national average annual household energy costs” would be “roughly $500 lower than under current policy.”

 

First of all, that’s eight years from now — not a lot of help with the current inflation problem, which was the frame of Biden’s op-ed. But the bigger problem is that “national average annual household energy costs” is not the same thing as household utility bills.

 

John Larsen, a Rhodium partner and principal author of the report, said the estimate includes both home energy services and the cost of driving. The two elements are roughly equal in terms of energy costs of $4,163 — $2,126 for mobility and $2,037 for home energy. (Note that the home energy element is similar to the EnergyStar estimate.)

 

But most of the estimated savings, Larsen said, comes from the driving side of the equation. “Of the $495 in savings, $403 comes from mobility savings (spending less money on gasoline either because of more efficient cars or electric vehicles) and the remainder is home energy savings,” he wrote in an email.

 

Indeed, the report notes that, if the Biden climate plan were adopted, home electricity bills by 2030 would be between one dollar more and five dollars less than under current policy. That might pay for an extra ice cream cone over the summer.

 

Larsen noted that Biden, in the op-ed, referred to learning this number in a conversation with utility executives, so he did not appear to be referencing the Rhodium report. “I can say that our numbers represent savings across all household energy expenditures and not just those associated with utility bills,” he said.

 

But when we located the transcript of Biden’s conversation with utility executives on Feb. 9, we found no reference to $500 in utility savings. The figure was also not mentioned in the White House readout of the meeting.

 

Somehow, as inflation became a hot political issue, the $500 figure that was cited in the State of the Union address appears to have morphed into a reference to utility bills. A May 10 White House release on the “Biden-Harris Inflation Plan,” for instance, called on Congress to pass clean-energy legislation that would “save families an estimated $500 per year on their utility bills.”

 

Indeed, when we asked the White House for the source of the number mentioned in the Biden op-ed, we received … a link to the Rhodium report.

 

The Pinocchio Test

The president wrote in an opinion article on his inflation plan — presumably vetted by staff — that utility executives told him “my plan would reduce the average family’s annual utility bills by $500.”

 

But he didn’t hear that from utility executives.

 

And the report he is citing is not about household utility-bill savings.

 

Most of the claimed savings comes from the reduced cost of driving.

 

And the estimate is for 2030 — when he would no longer be president, even if he served a second term.

 

Is there any doubt the president earns Four Pinocchios?

US Attorney General Merrick Garland made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday to discuss efforts to prosecute war crimes from Russia’s invasion.

 

Merrick Garland is going to make sure the law is applied in Ukraine as hundreds of J-6 defendants rotting in the DC Gulag are denied their Constitutional right to a speedy trial.

 

Garland met with Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova to discuss the US’s efforts to prosecute war crimes, Politico reported.

 

“The unwavering support of the United States for the people of Ukraine” amid “an unprovoked and unjust Russian invasion.” Garland said standing alongside Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

 

“I’m here to continue our discussions … about the actions that the United States is taking to assist the Ukrainian authorities in holding accountable those responsible for the atrocities, for the war crimes that the entire world has seen,” Garland said.

 

The US “is sending an unmistakable message: There is no place to hide. We and our partners will pursue every avenue available to make sure that those who are responsible for these atrocities are held accountable,” he said.

 

The Biden Regime has sent billion of dollars to Ukraine this year as Americans suffer from high inflation rates and record high gas prices.
