UN: IOF fired shots that killed Abu Akleh

 

Information gathered by the United Nations showed that the bullets that killed Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh were fired from the barrel of an Israeli gun, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said on Friday.

 

"All information we have gathered is consistent with the finding that the shots that killed Abu Akleh and injured her colleague Ali Sammoudi came from Israeli security forces and not from indiscriminate firing by armed Palestinians," OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters.

 

According to the data gathered by the human rights watchdog, there was no activity by any armed Palestinians in the journalists' immediate vicinity, Shamdasani added.

 

Abu Akleh and the group of Al Jazeera journalists made sure to stand in front of an IOF convoy while wearing press jackets and helmets to indicate their journalist status, the investigation showed, in confirmation of the testimony of one of the martyr's colleagues.

 

"The journalists said they chose a side street for their approach to avoid the location of armed Palestinians inside the camp and that they proceeded slowly in order to make their presence visible to the Israeli forces deployed down the street," she said, revealing that there was no warning before the Israeli occupation forces opened fire at that time and that location.

 

"Several single, seemingly well-aimed bullets were fired towards [the journalists] from the direction of the Israeli security forces," Shamdasani said.

 

She also highlighted how the IOF continued firing at an unarmed man who was trying to help Abu Akleh, as well as a journalist who was using a tree as a shelter.

 

OHCHR chief Michelle Bachelet reiterated her call for the Israeli occupation to launch a criminal investigation into Abu Akleh's killing, Shamdasani noted amid accusations from top Israeli officials that Palestinians could have been behind Abu Akleh's murder.

 

Later on, "Tel Aviv" went back on its words, raising the possibility that an Israeli soldier could have fired the shot that took the veteran journalist's life.

 

Around half of the Democrat Senators in the US Congress were reported earlier today as calling for Washington to be directly involved in the investigation into last month's murder of Abu Akleh.

 

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), even before reports regarding the letter emerged, started lobbying to block it using claims such as bias against the Israeli occupation. The lobbying group claimed that the circumstances of Abu Akleh's murder remained unclear while alleging that the senators' letter "implies both Israeli culpability and inability to conduct an objective, thorough investigation" of the murder.

 

Investigations conducted by CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post have all found that the Israeli occupation was behind Abu Akleh's murder in one way or another. One thing all the outlets have in common is that the bullet that ended the life of a veteran journalist was fired from the direction of an IOF convoy that was in Jenin as part of an Israeli bid to terrorize the city's residents amid confrontations.

 

The Washington Post examined more than 60 videos, social media posts, and photos of the murder, conducted physical inspections of the area, and commissioned two independent acoustic analyses of the gunshots. The paper found that Abu Akleh was killed by an Israeli soldier in the convoy that was near her and her colleagues.

 

Eyewitnesses told CNN that the Israeli forces present on the same street fired, deliberately, at the journalist even though the entourage followed journalist protocol, making sure they were seen, as a group, before moving around.

 

In the wake of the various press investigations into the crime, "Israel" seems like it won't be conducting an investigation of its own into the murder - US lawmakers, the United Nations, and the international community on the other hand are demanding an independent investigation.

David Leavitt (BA '88, JD '91) and Chelom Eastwood (BS '88, MS '10, JD '92) met on their first day of law school in 1988. David says, โ€œI saw [Chelom] and immediately shifted priorities from law school to Chelom.โ€ The couple married at the end of their first year. The young couple relinquished traditional jobs with established firms to begin Leavitt & Leavitt in Fillmore, Utah. David specialized in criminal law, Chelom in civil. David served as Juab County Attorney, earning prominence through his prosecution of Utahโ€™s first polygamy case in 50 years. The coupleโ€™s career has rubbed off on their seven children. Chelom says, โ€œOur kids often have contracts on their doors indicating who can come in or out, what kind of behavior is expected. Our kids act more like lawyers than we do.โ€

 

In 2004, Chelom and David agreed to spend a year in Kiev, Ukraine to assist the Ukrainian government in converting its criminal justice system from a Soviet-style organization to a more democratic system. Their experiences in Ukraine prompted them to create the Leavitt Institute for International Development, which teaches law in 23 Ukrainian and Moldovan law schools. Through the Leavitt Institute, legal professionals have volunteered more than 19,000 hours teaching law students in Ukraine, Moldova, and Rwanda. David says, โ€œService expands us. It makes us into people that we didnโ€™t know we could become.โ€

 

Chelom also developed an expertise in human development and family studies. After receiving a masterโ€™s degree from BYU in 2010, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship from the U.S. State Department to teach and conduct research in Ukraine. She then completed a PhD at Pennsylvania State University, where she studied healthy sexuality, and then joined the faculty of Family Life at BYU. Andy Fletcher, the co-founder and keyboardist of legendary electronic band Depeche Mode, has died at the age of 60, it has been announced.

 

The synth-pop group were one of the biggest draws of the 80s, with a stream of smash singles including 'Just Can't Get Enough', 'Enjoy the Silence' and 'Personal Jesus'.

 

In recent years, the band have continued to tour internationally as one of the most recognisable groups from the era.

 

In a statement tonight on Twitter, Depeche Mode said: 'We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness at the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member and bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher.

 

'Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold pint.

 

'Our hearts are with his family and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy at this difficult time.'

 

No cause of death was revealed by the band.Fletcher last hit the headlines last month when he fractured his wrist on holiday in Barcelona.

 

Tributes poured in for the musician from across the entertainment world.

 

The Cure co-founder Lol Tolhurst wrote: 'Very sad news today. Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has passed. I knew Andy and considered him a friend. We crossed many of the same pathways as younger men . My heart goes out to his family, bandmates, and DM fans. RIP Fletch.'

Putin responds to claims about world hunger

 

The Russian president says Moscow is not impeding Ukraineโ€™s grain exports after Berlin accused it of weaponizing hunger

 

Western nations are deliberately stirring up tensions regarding Ukrainian grain exports, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday during a BRICS+ video conference. He was responding to comments by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who has accused Moscow of holding the whole world โ€œhostageโ€ by blocking Ukrainian grain shipments.

 

Putin said Russia is not impeding exports, and criticized the West for its โ€œcynical attitudeโ€ towards the food supply of the developing nations, which have been worst affected by soaring prices. He said rising inflation in the West was โ€œa result of their own irresponsible macroeconomic policies.โ€

 

Moscow is ready to provide free passage to international waters for ships carrying grain, Putin said, adding that Russia had reached an โ€œunderstandingโ€ on that issue with the UN Secretariat.

 

The Russian president suggested that the Ukrainian military should demine the countryโ€™s ports to further facilitate exports, however, and said โ€œa constructive approach on Kievโ€™s partโ€ is the only thing that is lacking.

 

According to the president, Russia itself may be able to export between 37 and 50 tons of grain this year.

 

Earlier on Friday, Baerbock blamed Moscow for the looming food crisis at a conference in Berlin. Russia is โ€œdeliberatelyโ€ using global hunger as โ€œa weapon,โ€ the minister said, claiming that Moscow had taken โ€œthe whole world hostage.โ€

 

The German minister also spoke about a potentially โ€œlife-threatening waveโ€ of hunger that the world is facing, since around 345 million people are currently threatened by food shortages. The crisis has been a result of a number of factors like droughts and various regional conflicts, as well as the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, Baerbock admitted. However, she claimed it was Russia that โ€œmade a tsunami out of this wave.โ€

 

Her words have sparked an angry reaction from Moscow. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said on Telegram that โ€œusing hunger as a weaponโ€ is โ€œGermanyโ€™s historical tradition,โ€ apparently referring to crimes committed by the Nazis. Former Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, also pointed to the blockade of the city of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) by the Nazis during World War II, which lasted for 900 days, causing massive hunger in the city, and claiming the lives of almost 700,000 people.

Feds search home of former DOJ official Trump sought to install as AG: reports

 

Federal law enforcement this week searched the home of Jeffrey Clark, the former Department of Justice (DOJ) official accused of trying to use the agency to pursue former President Trumpโ€™s election fraud allegations, multiple news outlets reported Thursday.

 

According to The New York Times, Clarkโ€™s suburban Virginia home was searched on Wednesday, a day before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack was set to hear from former DOJ officials about the internal strife in the Trump administration following the 2020 election.

 

A spokesman for the U.S. attorneyโ€™s office in D.C. did not immediately respond when asked for comment on the reports.

 

Clark was central to Trumpโ€™s pressure campaign at the DOJ and Trump even weighed installing him as attorney general, according to previously released material.

 

The mid-level attorney, who specialized in environmental law and was acting head of the departmentโ€™s civil division at the time, was one of Trumpโ€™s top advocates for forwarding election fraud claims. He pushed the DOJ to send a letter to Georgia asking it to hold off on certifying its election results so the Justice Department could announce an investigation into voter fraud there.

 

That pressure campaign came to a head at a Jan. 3, 2021, meeting in which Trump told his DOJ leadership he was weighing ousting them in favor of Clark, who had for days been pushing Trump alliesโ€™ claims about voter fraud.

 

Then-acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and his deputy, Richard Donoghue, were surprised to get an email from Clark prior to their White House meeting promoting โ€œvarious theories that seemed to be derived from the internet,โ€ according to Donoghue.

 

That included a theory that the Chinese government may have hacked into Dominion voting machines through a smart thermostat. He followed with a request for an intelligence community briefing on the matter along with the request to send the letter to Georgia elections officials.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Trump Advisor Peter Navarro

 

A federal grand jury on Friday indicted Trumpโ€™s economic advisor Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate with Liz Cheneyโ€™s unconstitutional January 6 Committee.

 

Earlier this year the abusive January 6 panel voted to advance contempt charges against Trumpโ€™s aides Dan Scavino and Peter Navarro.

 

Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino didnโ€™t provide any documents to the House panel and refused to show up for their depositions.

 

The full House of Representatives voted in April to refer Navarro to the Justice Department for not complying with the J-6 panelโ€™s subpoena.

 

Navarro was indicted and faces two contempt counts.

 

CNN reported:

 

A federal grand jury has indicted former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate in the House January 6 committeeโ€™s investigation.

 

According to the Justice Department, Navarro will make an appearance in court Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET in Washington.

It is worth noting that the ruling does not make abortion illegal, but rather returns the United States to the pre-Roe v. Wade era when each state was free to allow them or not.

 

Several US states announced legislation to prohibit abortions in their states shortly after the court's announcement.

 

Human rights experts from the United Nations condemned the Supreme Court decision and urged US President Joe Biden to take all necessary steps to mitigate its repercussions.

 

In a joint statement, the experts called the ruling "a monumental setback for the rule of law and gender equality," calling it "shocking and dangerous."

 

They went on to say that the move would increase the number of women and girls seeking illegal and unsafe abortions, as well as exacerbate abortion stigma, creating a "nightmare scenario for those dealing with the uncertainty and trauma of an unplanned pregnancy."

 

The statement was supported by eight special rapporteurs and the United Nations working group on gender discrimination.

 

It is worth noting that UN experts do not speak for the global body, but rather report on their findings.

According to sources familiar with the matter, his Kingdom Holding investment firm now has Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) as a minority shareholder, and the powerful sovereign wealth fund is unlikely to sit on the sidelines.

 

Two sources familiar with the Kingdom's business told Reuters that the wealth fund, which is at the heart of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's plan to diversify the Saudi economy, will want Kingdom Holding's investment committee to be more powerful in terms of making decisions than before.

 

"(PIF) will want to be an active investor," said a sovereign wealth fund investor in the Gulf. "The investment committee of Kingdom Holding is essentially Alwaleed, and I can't imagine the PIF being at the whims of the prince."

 

When contacted by Reuters, the PIF, Kingdom Holding, Prince Alwaleed, and his spokesperson all declined to comment on what the PIF's minority stake means for future investments.

 

Alwaleed, 67, had long held a tight grip on the Kingdom's shares, owning all but 5% of those traded on the Saudi stock exchange until PIF paid $1.5 billion for a 16.87 percent stake last month.

 

The agreement came more than four years after Prince Alwaleed was arrested in a crackdown ordered by the Crown Prince and held for nearly three months at Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton along with scores of royals, senior officials, and business leaders.

 

Most detainees were released after so-called "financial settlements were reached," and Prince Alwaleed announced in March 2018 that he had reached a confidential deal with the government.

 

The PIF agreement was reached at Kingdom Holding's lowest share price of the year, with no premium. Bankers who typically work with the PIF or Alwaleed were not hired for this transaction, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

 

'Change of tack'

 

As part of the settlements securing their release, the Saudi state took direct controlling stakes in the businesses of some Saudi entrepreneurs detained in 2017, including the Binladen construction group and the media company MBC.

 

Alwaleed rose to international prominence in the 1990s after making a large successful bet on Citigroup, and he was an early investor in Apple.

 

A $300 million joint investment in Twitter was made by the prince and Kingdom in 2011, and his stake was increased in 2015. He agreed last month to roll a stake now worth $1.89 billion into Elon Musk's takeover deal rather than cash out.

Influence peddling has long been the way Washingtonโ€™s elite enriches itself. This common source of political corruption involves the relatives of powerful government figures who shake down corporations or countries for access and influence.

Despite President Bidenโ€™s repeated claims he knew nothing about these dealings, Bobulinski has said he personally met with the senior Biden to discuss Hunter Bidenโ€™s business activities. Bobulinski had been selected by the family to handle these deals.

 

As vice president, Joe Biden flew to China on Air Force Two with Hunter Biden, who arranged for his father to meet some of his business interests. Hunter Bidenโ€™s financial interest in a Chinese-backed investment firm, BHR Partners, was registered within weeks of that 2013 trip. Yet, President Biden repeatedly insisted that he never discussed such dealings with his son, a claim Hunter Biden has contradicted.

 

There are emails of Ukrainian and other foreign clients thanking Hunter Biden for arranging meetings with his father. There are photos from dinners and meetings that tie President Biden to these figures, including a 2015 dinner with a group of Hunter Bidenโ€™s Russian and Kazakh clients.

A controversy over a transgender book read in a first grade Bellingham classroom reveals the districtโ€™s school board president owns an all-ages sex shop.

Some parents were upset to learn a teacher read to their young students the book I Am Jazz. The childrenโ€™s book introduces readers to transgenderism via a child who, at the age of 2, was โ€œpretending to be a boy.โ€ At a young age, the boy met a doctor who labeled him transgender. Based on a real person, the character presented as a female and went by the name Jazz.

Complaints to the teacher went nowhere, so parents contacted Bellingham School Board President Jenn Mason. Those complaints fell on deaf ears. Now we may know why.

School board president owns an all-ages sex shop

Parents told Young Americaโ€™s Foundation, which first reported the controversy, that they escalated their complaints to the school board.

Led by Mason, who was elected in 2017, the board โ€œrefused to take action.โ€ If parents were expecting her to side with their concerns on introducing children to sexuality or gender identity, they were in for a rude awakening.

Mason isnโ€™t just the school board president. She is also a private sex coach and small business owner.

According to her Facebook page, Mason owns WinkWink. It bills itself as an โ€œall-ages, inclusive, not creepy sex shop in Bellingham, WA.โ€ She aims to โ€œbanish shame, and help our customers to better love themselves and others.โ€ She told Western Washington Universityโ€™s student newspaper Western Front that sheโ€™ll only sell to customers 16-years-old and older, but all ages are welcome inside.

Masonโ€™s sex coach training comes from the Sexology Institute. According to her website, she is a certified sex educator through the American College of Sexologists.

Of course, Mason wonโ€™t help parents

It makes sense that Mason wonโ€™t help parents concerned over transgender issues introduced to young children. A quick view of her positions suggests she endorses the message.

Mason is a social justice activist who believes โ€œnormalizing, accepting, and affirming all bodies, identities, and gender experiences is an inherently political act.โ€ Her store sells items relating to gender identity.

On Facebook, she announced she was adding her personal pronouns to her email signatures. She made a move out of duty to โ€œbuild more inclusive spaces for our trans and non-binary friends.โ€ The goal of I Am Jazz is to do just that: create more acceptance to trans children, even if parents object to the material as age-inappropriate.

Is Masonโ€™s job a problem?

Some will say this is a story of Masonโ€™s job as a sex shop owner. Itโ€™s hard to ignore it. Itโ€™s ironic to have a โ€œnot creepy sex shopโ€ when you own and operate an all-ages sex shop. But Iโ€™m not sure her sex shop owner status should matter that much, per se.

The school board position is an elected one. Who the community elects is up to them. So long as sheโ€™s not hiding her shop, and I have no reason to believe she is, thatโ€™s not the issue. The issue is that Mason isnโ€™t listening to all of the parents.

If Mason is truly ignoring the parents who find the material objectionable, what good is she as a school board president? She is only abiding by her own personal ideological beliefs. So what good is she on the board?

For her part, sheโ€™s not just ignoring the concerns of parents. Sheโ€™s ignoring the questions of this talk show host. Mason hasnโ€™t returned two emails nor a phone call requesting comment.

Why Hillary Clinton Canโ€™t Hide 38 Documents From The Special Counsel

Part 1 of 2

Documents made public last week by the Federal Election Commission reveal that Hillary Clinton campaign payments to Fusion GPS to dig up dirt on Donald Trump were not treated as legal expenses. These newly released documents eviscerate the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaignโ€™s attempts to hide behind attorney-client privilege in the special counselโ€™s criminal case against former Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann.

 

Sussmann, who awaits trial in a D.C. federal court later this month on the charge that he made a false statement to former FBI General Counsel James Baker, is currently fighting to keep prosecutors from seeing 38 documents withheld from the grand jury based on claims of attorney-client privilege. In early April, Special Counsel John Durhamโ€™s team filed a motion to compel those secreting the documents to provide them to the court to allow the judge to assess, in camera, whether they were properly withheld. In response, Sussmann argued the special counsel had waited too long to force the issue and that his criminal case was the wrong forum to litigate the question.

 

The day after the former Clinton campaign attorney filed his response opposing in camera review of the material, his โ€œfellow Spygate hoaxers sought to join in Sussmannโ€™s efforts to keep the documents concealedโ€ by seeking to intervene in the case. Last week, the trial court granted the flurry of motions to intervene, authorizing tech executive Rodney Joffe, Fusion GPS, Perkins Coie, the DNC, and the Clinton campaign to file briefs opposing disclosure of the documents.

 

On Wednesday the court will hear oral arguments on the special counselโ€™s motion and decide whether the 38 documents must be turned over, initially to the court and then eventually to prosecutors. While Durhamโ€™s team previously had a strong case that the documents were not protected by attorney-client privilege, a document dump last week by the FEC further strengthens the prosecutorโ€™s position.

 

A little more than a month ago, news broke that the FEC had fined the DNC and the Clinton campaign more than $100,000 related to those organizationsโ€™ reporting of fees paid in 2016. Those fees were paid to Fusion GPS for opposition research but marked on financial disclosures as legal expenses remitted to its law firm, Perkins Coie. Until Thursday, however, the basis for the FECโ€™s conclusion that probable cause existed that the DNC and Clinton campaign had misreported the purpose of those disbursements remained buried in the bureaucracy.

 

The now-released file about the FECโ€™s investigation into the DNC and the Clinton campaign contains a bevy of material. It includes, most relevantly, memoranda prepared by the FECโ€™s Office of General Counsel and approved by the FEC.

 

The memoranda conclude that probable cause supports a finding that both the Clinton campaign and the DNC misrepresented the purpose of the payments to Fusion GPS. While the political organizations reported the payments to Fusion GPS as โ€œlegal servicesโ€ or โ€œlegal and compliance consulting,โ€ the FEC concluded probable cause existed that the expenses instead related to opposition research.

 

The memorandaโ€”one issued related to the DNC and the second addressing the complaint against the Clinton campaignโ€”begin with the FEC general counselโ€™s office reciting the now well-known facts, beginning with the players. Perkins Coie served as general counsel for the DNC during the 2016 election cycle, the memoranda say. Then, in April 2016, Perkins Coie hired Fusion GPS to perform โ€œa variety of research and consulting services.โ€ The memoranda then recount the evidence the FEC general counsel reviewed, which โ€œincluded invoices, account statements, copies of checks, and wire transfers.โ€

 

That evidence, the FEC concluded, showed โ€œthe DNC paid Fusion $777,907.97 for opposition researchโ€ while reporting the work as โ€œlegal and compliance consulting.โ€ Similarly, the FEC concluded the Clinton campaign inaccurately reported $175,000 of payments to Fusion GPS for opposition research as โ€œlegal services.โ€

 

Rather than fight the FECโ€™s conclusion, the DNC and Clinton campaign entered settlement agreements with the agency, agreeing to pay a fine and refrain from similar violations in the future. While not conceding the violations found by the FEC, the DNC and the Clinton campaign nonetheless agreed they would โ€œnot further contest the Commissionโ€™s findings.โ€

Watchdog group American Transparency is not pleased with how the government is monkeying around with taxpayer dollars.

 

In a review of federal discretionary spending over the past two years, the group discovered a number of federally funded projects such as studies on zombified cats, toilet cameras, and gambling pigeons. Here is a look at some of its most striking findings from the group's annual Whereโ€™s The Pork report.

 

$477,121 on transgender monkeys

A grant from the National Institutes of Health funded research that involved injecting male monkeys with hormones intended to transform them into female monkeys. The goal of the study was to examine the prevalence of HIV in transgender women: biological males who identify as female. Most of the monkeys used for the experiment were male rhesus macaques, according to a description for the study.

 

"Sadly, [transgender women] have some of the highest concentrated HIV epidemics in the world, with a pooled global prevalence of 19% and a 49-fold higher odds ratio of acquiring HIV than non-transgender adults," the description read.

 

Researchers noted that estradiol is one of the most common hormones given during gender transitions, and they said they sought to figure out whether that hormone could make people more susceptible to HIV infection. The funding was awarded in the 2021 and 2022 fiscal years, according to the Whereโ€™s The Pork report.

 

$465,339 on gambling pigeons

The government made a bet on a study out of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, that entailed trying to teach pigeons to gamble via slot machines. It is not immediately clear how participants in the study were able to goad the pigeons into gambling. Researchers hoped to gain insights into behavioral economics and conceded the study would focus more on "laboratory models rather than practical applications," per the project's description.

 

"The research aims to develop a laboratory-based system for examining behavior from an economic perspective," the description read. "Such perspectives have been fruitfully applied in recent years to substance abuse, gambling and other types of risky choice, finance, obesity, and self-control, among others, serving as an organizing framework for translational research that spans the continuum from laboratory to practice."

 

The project began in 2020 and will continue until 2023, according to the project's description. The National Institutes of Health awarded the grant.

 

$6.97 million on toilet cameras

Toilets are traditionally thought of as private spaces, but scientists insist that "to fully reap the benefits of the smart toilet, users must make their peace with a camera that scans their anus."

 

Stanford University researchers received funding to craft advanced technology to analyze one's bottom to gain data to assess the user's health. The researchers say that one's nether region can have as many 37 unique creases that can be used to craft an โ€œanalprint.โ€

 

In addition to scanning a person's bottom, the smart toilet would also use sensors to track defecation samples for different types of diseases and cancers. The National Cancer Institute issued the funding for the project. The study was announced in 2020.

In Russia, curiosity may have killed cats. Scientists at the Pavlov Institute of Physiology in Russia received funding from the National Institutes of Health to sever parts of the feline brain and use electrodes to control cat movements on a treadmill. Some 18 cats were used in the experiences, according to the Washington Free Beacon. The experiment, which was funded in 2021, was intended to gain insights into how the cerebral cortex functions, but the experiment drew backlash from Republicans.
