Retired Marine Gen. John Allen on Wednesday said President Trump’s threats to use the U.S. military on protesters “may well signal the beginning of the end of the American experiment.”

 

“The slide of the United States into illiberalism may well have begun on June 1, 2020,” Allen wrote in a scathing essay published online by Foreign Policy magazine. “Remember the date.”

 

Allen, the former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said Trump’s halting Rose Garden speech in which he declared himself the “president of law and order,” the use of tear gas on protesters outside the White House and the church photo op that followed Monday was a “stunning” moment and potentially a pivotal one.

 

“Donald Trump expressed only the barest of condolences at the murder of George Floyd, but he also said nothing about the fundamental and underlying reasons for the unrest: systemic racism and inequality, a historic absence of respect, and a denial of justice,” Allen wrote. “Yes, he mentioned George Floyd, but he did not touch on long-standing societal problems at all. He sees the crisis as a black problem — not as something to be addressed by creating the basis and impetus for a move toward social justice, but as an opportunity to use force to portray himself as a ‘law and order’ president.

 

“…Trump was clear he views those engaged in the unrest and criminal acts in these riots as terrorists, an enemy,” Allen continued. “He said so, ostensibly as justification to deploy the U.S. military to apply federal force — his ‘personal’ force — against the riots.

 

“…Donald Trump isn’t religious, has no need of religion, and doesn’t care about the devout, except insofar as they serve his political needs,” he added. “He failed to project any of the higher emotions or leadership desperately needed in every quarter of this nation during this dire moment.”

 

Allen — who retired from the military in 2013 and is now president of the Brookings Institution — was particularly struck by the juxtaposition of Trump’s claim to be “an ally of peaceful protesters” and the removal of those peaceful protesters to clear the street in front of St. John’s Church.

 

“Fully equipped riot police and troops violently, and without provocation, set upon the peaceful demonstrators there, manhandling and beating many of them, employing flash-bangs, riot-control agents, and pepper spray throughout,” he wrote. “These demonstrators had done nothing to warrant such an attack. Media who were watching over the scene craned their cameras to try to understand what had happened to justify this violence, until it became clear for all to see. The riot police had waded into these nonviolent American citizens — who were protesting massive social injustice — with the sole purpose of clearing the area around St. John’s Episcopal Church, on the other side of the park, so the self-proclaimed 'ally of peaceful protesters,' Donald Trump, could pose there for a photo-op.”

 

Allen’s essay echoed a statement issued Wednesday by former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who said he was “angry and appalled” at the White House’s response to the protests.

A Molten Galaxy Einstein Ring

 

It is difficult to hide a galaxy behind a cluster of galaxies. The closer cluster's gravity will act like a huge lens, pulling images of the distant galaxy around the sides and greatly distorting them. This is just the case observed in the featured image recently re-processed image from the Hubble Space Telescope. The cluster GAL-CLUS-022058c is composed of many galaxies and is lensing the image of a yellow-red background galaxy into arcs seen around the image center. Dubbed a molten Einstein ring for its unusual shape, four images of the same background galaxy have been identified. Typically, a foreground galaxy cluster can only create such smooth arcs if most of its mass is smoothly distributed – and therefore not concentrated in the cluster galaxies visible. Analyzing the positions of these gravitational arcs gives astronomers a method to estimate the dark matter distribution in galaxy clusters, as well as infer when the stars in these early galaxies began to form.

Uvalde school police chief to resign from city council

 

Pete Arredondo – the highly criticized Uvalde school police chief – will resign from his city council position, according to a new report.

 

A few weeks before the mass shooting on May 24 that killed 19 children and two teachers at the Robb Elementary School, Arredondo was elected to the Uvalde city council. He was sworn into the position on May 31. However, Arredondo will reportedly step down from the position in the Texas town.

 

"After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3. The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde,” Arredondo told Uvalde Leader-News.

 

“As we continue to grieve over the tragedy that occurred on May 24th, we pray for the families involved and our community," Arredondo told the local newspaper. "Uvalde has a rich history of loving and supporting thy neighbor and we must continue to do so. In speaking with other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same… continue to support the families, continue to support our community, and definitely, to keep our faith."

 

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said the city has yet to receive a resignation letter from Arredondo, but McLaughlin called it "the right thing to do," Fox News reported.

 

Following the deadly school shooting, Arredondo had requested an extended leave from the city council. However, city council denied his request during a meeting held on June 21.

 

The chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police department was placed on administrative leave on June 22. The day prior, Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw told a state Senate committee that police officers could have ended the deadly school massacre within minutes. However, under Arredondo's command, the mass shooter was not neutralized until 77 minutes after the gunman entered Robb Elementary School.

 

Arrendondo earns an annual salary of $90,750 as the chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police department, according to Uvalde Leader-News.

 

A report from last month stated that a Uvalde police officer passed up an opportunity to open fire on the school shooter. The report also said that law enforcement never tried to open the classroom door where the gunman was.

Diplomacy is a marathon that never ends. That is why it is quite meaningless to celebrate or lament the outcome of a diplomatic round, because it is just another round.

 

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to play a game of poker in Madrid. He found the West at a time when it needs him because of the war in Ukraine and exerted all possible pressure. What did he secure? First of all, a meeting with US President Joe Biden. He really wanted that meeting for domestic reasons but also to balance the impressions from the Greek prime minister’s recent speech at the US Congress. In Washington, the followers of the theory “We must not lose Turkey” won a round by including the term “strategic ally” in the relevant press release.

 

The US president also promised to support the request to upgrade the Turkish F-16s. Of course, Biden pointed out to Erdogan that the request must be approved by the Congress, which is by no means certain. In their talks, he also explained that any Turkish action that would cause instability in the Aegean would make it even more difficult to advance the Turkish request.

 

Therefore, the Turkish leader got what he wanted for his domestic political audience: the meeting and the green light for the F-16s. In practice, however, it remains to be seen whether in a few months this promise will be redeemed. Already in Congress, as reported by Kathimerini’s DC correspondent Lena Argyri, members are seriously considering adding some conditions for the approval of the Turkish request regarding the use of F-16s for overflights or other aggressive actions against Greece. The battle will be difficult and inconclusive.

 

What is impressive is what Finland and Sweden agreed to give in return for Turkey’s approval of their NATO membership. Although they are both countries with a long tradition of protecting human rights, they agreed to change their legislation regarding the Kurds and lift the arms embargo on Turkey. But these, too, can change along the way, and that is why Ankara is holding the weapon of a possible new veto next year. Sweden and Finland are politically and institutionally mature countries. Consequently, no one can predict whether the commitments toward Turkey will be accepted smoothly domestically, since the reactions have already begun.

 

The crucial question is what conclusions Erdogan drew from Madrid. The positive scenario says that he is satisfied with the – mainly political – benefits he secured and will keep calm regarding Greece and Cyprus until the elections. The bad scenario is that he got the impression that he is strategically necessary to the West and that he can do whatever he wants at little cost. Time will tell which scenario comes to pass.

The US and Taiwan announced the initiative on Wednesday, which marked the formal start of trade negotiations. Taiwan’s trade representative, John Deng, will head to Washington next month for the talks.

 

Deng said the initiative cover 11 areas, including “trade facilitation, regulatory practices, agriculture, anti-corruption, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, digital trade, labor rights, the environment, standards, state-owned enterprises, and non-market practices and policies.”

 

The trade talks are the latest example of the US taking steps to boost informal relations with Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the US should “stop negotiating agreements with implications of sovereignty and of official nature, and refrain from sending any wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

 

Zhao also called on the US to stop selling weapons to Taiwan in response to comments from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The Pentagon chief said the US “will make available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable it to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability commensurate with the Chinese threat.”

 

Since severing diplomatic relations with Taipei in 1979, the US has sold arms to the island, but the US is looking for other ways to support Taiwan militarily. Earlier this week, Taiwanese President Tsai ing-Wen said that Washington is planning to increase “cooperation” between the US National Guard and the US military.

Russia Attacks US-Backed Fighters In Syria At American Outpost

 

US military officials have told The Wall Street Journal that Russia forces have carried out multiple military operations against the US-led coalition in Syria this month. This included a Wednesday attack on the al-Tanf garrison along the Iraq border in southeast Syria, though so far it appears the operations have targeted American proxies, namely local Arab and Kurdish factions that US trainers have been supporting.

 

Given that Russia informed the Americans of the attacks ahead of time via a military-to-military communications line, the Pentagon believes Russia "wasn’t actively targeting American troops but was harassing the US mission in Syria."

 

With al-Tanf, US officials described that "a combat outpost at the garrison" was hit in the Russian strike, but no US troops were there at the time, in an attack that appeared to target ”US-backed Maghawir al-Thawra fighters" - which Russia says was responsible for an earlier roadside bomb attack against its troops. There were no reports of casualties, as coalition forces quickly evacuated due to the prior Russian warning.

 

It's clear that this is perhaps the closest Russian and US forces have ever come to direct conflict, something the Pentagon has expressed a desire to avoid, but said Russia's recent actions are a serious "provocation" and mark an escalation.

 

"We seek to avoid miscalculation or a set of actions that could lead to unnecessary conflict: that remains our goal," Army Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of US Central Command said. "However, Russia’s recent behavior has been provocative and escalatory."

 

CNN added in a follow-up to the WSJ report:

 

The initial US assessment is the Russian forces were likely ordered to notify the US ahead of time and conduct the airstrikes knowing they would not hit US troops and that the Americans would warn their allies, the officials said.

 

But the Russians still likely achieved their goal of "sending a message" to the US that they can strike without being worried about retaliation, one official said.

 

There have been a number of 'close calls' between US and Russian troops operating in Syria over the years. Russian forces are there at the invitation of the Syrian government, while President Assad has called the Americans hostile foreign occupiers and demanded they withdraw. Sometimes the rival convoys block each other in standoffs on key Syrian roadways near areas of the US occupation, which is heaviest in the northeast.

 

However, some observers are seeing in this month's strikes near US positions a deliberate signal that things are intensifying related to Ukraine, and the Kremlin is engaged in muscle-flexing in the face of the some 900 US troops still in Syria.

US-NATO’s Response to the Istanbul Ukraine-Russia Peace Initiative: “Escalate the Conflict” through Weapons Deliveries

 

In order to scuttle the Ukraine-Russia peace initiative to Ukraine announced at the Istanbul talks on March 29, halting Russian military campaign north of the capital and focusing on liberating the Russian-majority Donbas in east Ukraine, practically spelling an end to Russia’s month-long offensive in the embattled country, NATO powers have announced transferring heavy weapons, including tanks and S-300 air defense system, to Ukraine to further escalate the conflict.

 

Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, April 7, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley revealed that US and NATO countries have collectively provided roughly 60,000 anti-tank weapons and 25,000 anti-aircraft weapons to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24.

 

“The Russian air force has not even today established air superiority let alone air supremacy, which is one of the reasons why they are having great difficulty on the ground,” the ambitious four-star general, who appears to have sights set on the presidential office after retirement, like Dwight Eisenhower, boasted before the committee:

 

“So the air superiority mission over Ukraine’s airspace has not been achieved, why is that? It’s because of the survival of the air defense systems, both the MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems) that we have been providing – stingers and the like from other NATO countries – plus the longer range SAMs (surface-to-air missiles) that have been provided and that they already had.”

 

“We are providing Ukrainians intelligence to conduct operations in the Donbas, that’s correct,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confessed publicly for the first time that the US is providing intelligence to Ukrainian forces in response to the question from Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

 

“We continue to provide useful information and intelligence to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in their fight,” a senior defense official acknowledged after Austin’s remarks. “As that fight migrates more to the Donbas region, we will adjust our information content and flow as required.”

 

In most cases, two sources familiar with the intelligence-sharing system told CNN, the intelligence being shared involved information about Russian force movements and locations, as well as intercepted communications about their military plans. And it is typically provided to Ukrainian officials as quickly as within 30 minutes to an hour of the US receiving it, making it nearly real-time intelligence sharing.

 

Literally fawning over the top Pentagon officials, Sen. Roger Wicker, an establishment Republican, asked Austin on why all of $3 billion in congressional authorization for US arms to Ukraine previously pledged by the Biden administration has yet to be provided. “We’ve only used $900 million of this – less than a third of the amount authorized. Why hasn’t the administration provided the full $3 billion?”

 

US security assistance is flowing into Ukraine “faster than most people would have ever believed conceivable,” Austin told the committee on Thursday – at times arriving in Ukraine within days of receiving authorization, he said. “From the time authorization is provided, four or five days later we see real capability begin to show up,” Austin said during the hearing on the Defense Department’s whopping $773 billion budget request.

Homeschooling Is Especially Accommodating for Energetic Boys

The public education system is currently designed for passive learners. Males are more likely to be diagnosed with behavioral issues than female students in the system. About 12 percent of boys are highly intelligent but do not start talking until well after girls do, and because milestones are over-emphasized, many of those boys are put in speech therapy even though they often catch up without intervention.

 

Instead of accepting that boys and girls are different and have different educational needs, the public school system punishes them. Many encourage parents to medicate young males even though most just need more physical activity and better education methods.

 

Nearly every parent I’ve talked to recently (who isn’t already homeschooling) tells me, “We’re thinking about homeschooling.” I know it’s a leap of faith. I was terrified when our school district lost accreditation and I had to homeschool, but once you start it’s so easy. Kids learn faster, and they have fun doing it.

Many people just need a little help. I can say that three amazing resources gifted me enough confidence in my teaching skills that my children enjoyed learning and craved more.

 

First, the Starfall.com website is amazing. It’s packed with fun learning games and free features as well as an affordable membership that covers preschool through fifth grade.

 

Then, there are the ALEX Toys for craft-loving kids and Kidz Labs for kids learning about science. Each of these kits comes with all or most of the items needed to create art and science projects. What pieces they lack are household items which are incorporated (like a tin can for robotics). These are such wonderful hands-on learning options. They get kids involved and excited to see what they can do.

 

Lastly, although they might seem old-fashioned, the School Zone workbooks host hundreds of pages of fun worksheets that teach children lessons through sixth-grade material. My children love sitting down to fill out the pages, which are full of word games and math puzzles. Even my high-energy 4-year-old son will sit and work on them because he enjoys it.

 

You Are Your Child’s Best Resource

There will be hard days. Everyone has struggles sometimes, but parents are already teachers. We offer lessons all the time, and we learn as we go.

 

Some people think homeschooling is expensive. They think a good education has to have a massive budget — because that’s what the public education system does — but in truth, throwing money at materials doesn’t get the job done. Giving children individualized learning experiences and the ability to grow and ask questions is more important.

 

All you need is a reasonable budget and the will. If you’re not already homeschooling and you can’t afford private school, this really is your year. You will not regret it. If you’re too afraid to fully commit, test out a few lessons this summer. See how it goes. Purposeful teaching is a learning experience itself.

Meet the Billionaire and Rising GOP Mega-Donor Who’s Gaming the Tax System

 

Susquehanna founder and TikTok investor Jeff Yass has avoided $1 billion in taxes while largely escaping public scrutiny. He’s now pouring his money into campaigns to cut taxes and support election deniers.

 

One day in July 1985, three young men from Philadelphia, their lawyer and a burly Pinkerton guard arrived at a horse track outside Chicago carrying a briefcase with $250,000 in cash.

 

Running the numbers on a Compaq computer the size of a small refrigerator, Jeffrey Yass and his friends had found a way to outwit the track’s bookies, according to interviews, records and news accounts. A few months earlier, they’d wagered $160,000, gambling that, with tens of thousands of bets, they could nail the exact order of seven horses in three different races. It was a sophisticated theory of the racing odds, honed with help from a Ph.D. statistician who’d worked for NASA on the moon landing, and it proved right. They bagged $760,000, then the richest payoff in American racing history.

 

But that summer day, when they presented their strikingly long list of bets at the track window, they were turned away. Their appeal to the track owner got them ejected. Yass, just 27, then sued for the right to place the bets. The track’s lawyer fumed to a federal judge that the men were trying to corner the betting market “through the use of their statistics and numbers.”

 

Yass lost, but that year he and his friends repeated variations of the strategy at horse and greyhound tracks around the country. Then they decided to turn their focus from a world of hundreds of thousands of dollars to a world of billions: Wall Street.

 

Four decades later, the firm he and his friends founded, Susquehanna International Group, is a sprawling global company that makes billions of dollars. Yass and his team used their numerical expertise to make rapid-fire computer-driven trades in options and other securities, eventually becoming a giant middleman in the markets for stocks and other securities. If you have bought stock or options on an app like Robinhood or E-Trade, there’s a good chance you traded with Susquehanna without knowing it. Today, Yass, 63, is one of the richest and most powerful financiers in the country.

 

But one crucial aspect of his ascent to stratospheric wealth has transpired out of public view. Using the same prowess that he’s applied to race tracks and options markets, Yass has taken aim at another target: his tax bill.

 

There, too, the winnings have been immense: at least $1 billion in tax savings over six recent years, according to ProPublica’s analysis of a trove of IRS data. During that time, Yass paid an average federal income tax rate of just 19%, far below that of comparable Wall Street traders.

 

Yass has devised trading strategies that reduce his tax burden but push legal boundaries. He has repeatedly drawn IRS audits, yet has continued to test the limits. Susquehanna has often gone to court to fight the government, with one multiyear audit battle ending in a costly defeat. The firm has maintained in court filings that it complied with the law.

 

Yass’ low rate is particularly notable because Susquehanna, by its own description, specializes in short-term trading. Money made from such rapid trades is typically taxed at rates around 40%.

 

In recent years, however, Yass’ annual income has, with uncanny consistency, been made up almost entirely of income taxed at the roughly 20% rate reserved for longer-term investments.

 

Congress long ago tried to stamp out widely used techniques that seek to transform profits taxed at the high rate into profits taxed at the low rate. But Yass and his colleagues have managed to avoid higher taxes anyway.

New York group busts TV news anchor allegedly trying to meet underage boy for sex

Austria ends divisive COVID-19 jab mandate

 

Austria's health minister says the country is scrapping a suspended coronavirus vaccine mandate, saying the measure risks polarising society and could even lead to fewer people getting the jab.

 

The government announced plans last year requiring all people aged 18 and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19, the first country in Europe to do so.

 

The law took effect in February but parliamentarians suspended the mandate before police were due to enforce it in mid-March.

 

Health Minister Johannes Rauch said the rise of new virus variants had changed citizens' perception of the effectiveness and necessity of a vaccination, even among those willing to get the shot.

 

This could deter them from voluntarily getting booster shots that will help curb the outbreak in the autumn, he said.

 

"No one is getting vaccinated because of the compulsory vaccination (law)," Rauch explained.

 

On Wednesday, just 140 people across the country received their first coronavirus jab.

 

People had to be convinced of the need for a vaccination, Rauch said.

 

"And we can only achieve this when it is on a voluntary basis."

 

"The vaccine mandate hinders some people who are generally willing to get the shot from taking the booster, the idea being: I'm not going to be told what to do," Rauch said.

 

He said current hardships such as inflation and high energy prices, and fears surrounding the war in Ukraine, had contributed to tensions in society.

 

"We need every millimetre of solidarity and cohesion to cope with the coming months and years," Rauch said.

 

"And the debate surrounding compulsory vaccination and the hardening of positions over this question tore open rifts and did away with that solidarity."

 

About 62.4 per cent of the population in Austria is double vaccinated.

Kentucky court denies attorney general's appeal to reinstate abortion ban

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – An appellate court has denied an appeal by Kentucky's attorney general to reinstate the state's abortion ban.

A lawsuit filed Monday on behalf of the state's two abortion clinics — the EMW Women's Surgical Center and Planned Parenthood clinics in Louisville — asked a judge to issue a temporary restraining order to block a state law banning most abortions that took effect after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last week to overturn Roe. V. Wade.

Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Mitch Perry granted the temporary restraining order on Thursday to block the law.

 

In a statement late Thursday afternoon, Attorney General Daniel Cameron said he had asked the Kentucky Court of Appeals to stay Perry's decision.

"Every day that goes by that the Human Life Protection Act and Heartbeat Law are prevented from taking effect, more unborn lives will be lost," Cameron said at the time. "These laws represent Kentucky’s values and its support for life. We’re moving quickly to defend this important law and to have it restored."

 

Cameron's appeal was denied on Saturday, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Kentucky, meaning abortion remains legal in the state.

"This is a great victory for now," the ACLU said in a statement posted to Twitter on Saturday. "We'll fight with everything we have to keep it. No one — no matter where they live — should be forced to remain pregnant against their will."

 

Cameron also tweeted a response following the court's decision, saying his office was "disappointed with the ruling."

"The ruling continues to prevent Kentucky's Human Life Protection Act and heartbeat law from taking effect," he continued. "We intend to bring this matter to the Supreme Court of Kentucky."

Seventy years ago this coming Monday, Arthur M. Thurston was officially named legal attaché of the U.S. Embassy in wartime London. Three months earlier, on November 16, 1942, he had, at the invitation of U.S. Ambassador John Winant, opened the office for liaison purposes in the 1 Grosvenor Square embassy. Now, as “legat,” Thurston was already highly connected with his colleagues in MI-5 and MI-6.

It was a fearful time to be in London (see sidebar below), but an enormously productive time as well. British intelligence had developed Ultra—which intercepted and later decoded radio and cable messages sent by the Nazis to their clandestine networks worldwide. Thurston was given access to the decrypted messages in January 1943 and, under the codename Ostrich, forwarded intelligence to FBI Headquarters that related to possible German espionage in the United States. Ultimately, Ostrich would crucially assist our mandated intelligence operations in South America, control movement of double agents, and penetrate German intelligence. Postwar, there would be crucial legat assistance and liaison in the Klaus Fuchs exposé. Even by 1951, when the office was staffed with a single agent and two clerks, Legat John Cimperman was putting in 11-plus hour days and had 235 open cases that were pending resolution. Gamely, he described that time as “an unusually light period.”

Life During Wartime

World War II was a difficult and dangerous time for the FBI’s new overseas office in London. In the words of then-Legal Attaché Thurston: “During these three periods—air raids, flying bombs, and V2 rockets—the Bureau’s office in the American Embassy continued to function. The flying bombs that flew over the Embassy in the daytime were viewed from the office windows. At night, the German raiders were observed from hotel windows or from the street and to the tune of anti-aircraft and rocket guns situated in all the parks and atop strategic buildings. The nearest approach to disaster was during the V2 rocket period, when a rocket fell at Marble Arch. In addition to killing several people, the residence quarters of Bureau representatives was made a mass of flying glass and shattered doors, but no casualties apart from a commode which the blast ricocheted off the wall and struck one of the representatives in bed—but even this only resulted in a broken commode handle.”

And so began the friendships and cooperative relationships between the FBI and British law enforcement and intelligence services that flourish to this day.

Today, Legat London is staffed with Legal Attaché Scott Cruse, a deputy and five assistant legats, an intelligence analyst, and four office administrators. And guess what? They are still putting in 11-plus hour days. It is an incredibly busy and intense office, thanks to a world in turmoil.

All fought extradition in the U.K. and, when that failed, all appealed to the European Court of Human Rights on the grounds that, among other things, U.S. sentences were too long. After they had exhausted all appeals, Legat London worked with the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service and the London Metropolitan Police Service’s SO15 counterterrorism branch and extradition unit—not to mention with our U.S. military and federal partners—to coordinate the high-profile transport of Abu Hamza Al-Masri, Adel Abdel Bary, and Khalid Al-Fawwaz to New York City and Syed Talha Ahsan and Babar Ahmadto New Haven, Connecticut.

We thank our partners in the U.K. every single day for sharing information that protects both of our countries and brings terrorists and criminals to justice. Michael S. THE SUPREME COURT’S DECISION IN

S.D. WARREN CO. v. MAINE: SEEING THE FOREST

FOR THE TREES OR FLOODING THE VALLEY?

On May 15 the Supreme Court unanimously held in S.D. Warren Co. v.

Maine Board of Environmental Protection that the mere flow of water

through an existing dam constitutes a “discharge” regulated by the Clean

Water Act. In so holding, the Court affirmed a state’s authority to require

federally licensed hydroelectric projects to comply with state water-quality

standards. This decision, arising in the context of federal and state power in the area of licensing

infrastructure projects, isthe first environmental decision of the Roberts Court.

Section 401 of the Clean Water Act requires “[a]ny Applicant for a federal license or permit to

conduct any activity . . . which may result in a discharge into navigable water[s]” to obtain a

certification from the state in which the discharge originates. The statute further requires that

any effluent limitations and other requirements set forth in the certification become conditions

on the federal license or permit. The Federal Power Act, in turn, grants the Federal Energy

Regulatory Commission (FERC) exclusive authority to license hydroelectric projects on navigable waters of the United States. >>17304059

The crossover of their astroturfed divisionistic social engineering agitprop groups into the realm of science is a sign of panic and desperation.

 

The same phenomenon happened during the 2020 BLM pantifa George Floyd riots which swept the Country.

 

Anon's daughter had been sent packing from her junior year of college in March because covid. Within DAYS of being home she immediately connected with 12 other complete strangers in our rural blue state county on a "mask making project for disadvantaged black communities" who were suffering under the yoke of "muh systemic white privilege and racism".

 

Three people supplied the material, most of the others worked over their home sewing machines, and two were "runners" who delivered and picked up with their personal vehicles. Anon's daughter was a "runner".

 

Anon's spidey senses were tingling but in his most spectacular display of restraint ever, anon managed to keep his "manslpaining" in check and ever offered to ride with her during the first week. Anon was on a recon mission and instinctively knew how to keep low. Anon was impressed with the coordinated logistics of the operation which immediately raised the first red flag.

 

Anon knew he needed just one piece of Intel to begin digging so during a lighthearted moment anon asked a carefully worded question "Sweetheart….

 

Daughter: "PLEASE don't call me THAT anymore"…

Armed with the needed Intel, Anon began digging on "The Sunrise Movement". Within 30 minutes I had a clear trail to George Soros. But, how could I prove to her just how evil the World's greatest benefactor actually was? Hmmm….

 

It was about then that the George Floyd FF went down and the Country was on fire. My east coast blue state family was oblivious to the scope and scale of the well-coordinated wanton violence and arson in the selected blue state because….fake news.

 

Suddenly, anon noticed a "Sunrise Movement" leadership (2nd in command) member being interviewed about THE GEORGE FLOYD protests. What?? SM was a Green Initiative Soros' front group. Why are they being interviewed about the rioting?

 

Anon couldn't believe his ears and searched for a print copy of the interview. The second in charge of the entire national student movement was quoted as saying:

 

"The burning of buildings is a legitimate form of protest."

Hillsdale College is a private conservative[4] liberal arts college in Hillsdale, Michigan. It was founded in 1844 by abolitionists known as Free Will Baptists.[5]

 

Its liberal arts curriculum is based on Western heritage as a product of Greco-Roman culture and Judeo-Christian tradition.[6] The required core curriculum has courses on the Great Books, the U.S. Constitution, biology, chemistry, and physics.[4]

 

Since the late 20th century, in order to opt out of federal affirmative action policies, Hillsdale has been among a small number of U.S. colleges to decline governmental financial support, instead depending entirely on private funding to supplement students' tuition.[7][8][4]

 

Founding

In August 1844, members of the local community of Free Will Baptists resolved to organize their denomination's first collegiate institution.[5]: 4  After gathering donations, they established Michigan Central College in Spring Arbor, Michigan, on December 4, 1844.[5]: 6  That site is now home to Spring Arbor University. Although religiously affiliated, the college was officially nonsectarian.[9]

 

Under its first president, Daniel McBride Graham, who held the office from 1844 to 1848, Michigan Central College opened within a two-room store and admitted five students. In March 1845, the government of Michigan incorporated the college, and the college enrolled 25 undergraduates by the end of its first year.[10]: 12 [11][5]: 11 

 

Edmund Burke Fairfield assumed the presidency of Michigan Central College in 1848. Outgrowing its space, in 1853 the school moved to Hillsdale, Michigan, in part to have access to the railroad that served the city. It received considerable financial support from local citizens, who wanted to develop the 20-year-old town.[10]: 30  The cornerstone of the new building, Central Hall, was laid on July 4, 1853.[14][5]: 24  After Michigan Central College completed construction and moved, it reopened as Hillsdale College on November 7, 1855.

 

Fairfield led Hillsdale from 1848 to 1869.[11] During his presidency, he helped found the Republican Party with Ransom Dunn in neighboring Jackson, Michigan.[15] A prominent leader, Fairfield attended the first Republican Party convention in 1858, and was elected lieutenant governor of Michigan. Hillsdale's early anti-slavery reputation and pivotal role in founding the Republican Party led to the invitation of several notable speakers on the campus, including Frederick Douglass (who visited the school on two separate occasions) and Edward Everett, the orator preceding Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg.[10]: xxv, 49  On August 8, 1860, Hillsdale conferred its first degrees. On March 20, 1863, the Michigan legislature formally legalized Hillsdale's change of name and location.[5]: 33 

 

Hillsdale no longer has any denominational affiliation but, according to its website, "the moral tenets of Christianity as commonly understood in the Christian tradition have been essential to the mission of the College".[16] It has always been open to black and female students.[4]

BLM Supporter Sentenced To 10 Years Prison For Violence During Portland Riots

 

An Indiana man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for playing a significant part in fueling violence during the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and rioting in Portland, Oregon.

 

Malik Fard Muhammad, 25, was sentenced on Tuesday for “repeatedly and intentionally jeopardizing the lives of police officers, destroying public property, and encouraging others to commit violence during protests that occurred in Portland in 2020,” according to the Justice Department.

 

In addition to 10 years in prison, Muhammad gets three years of supervised release. Although the DOJ did not mention the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in the press release, Muhammad was arrested in 2020 following evidence collected at a BLM protest turned riot.

 

During the BLM demonstrations that ended in violence on Sept. 21, 2020, Muhammad threw a beer growler made into a Molotov cocktail on a police officer sitting inside his vehicle. The officer jumped out when he saw the firebomb, which did not blow, hurtling towards him.

 

Muhammed was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated murder, attempted assault in the first degree, attempted murder in the first degree, and unlawful manufacture of a destructive device, along with other crimes.

 

“Anyone who thinks they can get away with trying to murder police officers and destroy this city should think again,” Police Chief Chuck Lovell said in a statement last year announcing Muhammed’s arrest.

 

“Holding accountable those individuals whose sole focus is violence and destruction, like Mr. Muhammad, is central to our ongoing effort to support the rights of all Oregonians,” said Scott Erik Asphaug, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

 

The district attorney’s office said that Muhammad intentionally and repeatedly jeopardized the lives of police officers, engaged in activities that destroyed public property like smashing the Oregon Historical Society’s windows, while calling on others to commit violence.

 

“The right to protest peacefully is absolute,” said ATF Seattle Field Division Special Agent in Charge Jonathan T. McPherson. “But it is clear Mr. Muhammad didn’t come to exercise his rights. He came from out-of-state to bring violence to our community.”

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (LCCRUL) is a left-of-center organization of attorneys formed after a request from President John F. Kennedy to support federal civil rights initiatives following a federal integration order for the University of Alabama in 1963 and subsequent protest marches in Mississippi.

 

In recent years the Lawyers’ Committee has advocated and litigated on a broad range of left-progressive policy issues including the push to place public housing in suburban areas, rent control, the removal of the citizenship question and the inclusion of illegal immigrants in the count for the 2020 Census, mail-in-voting and removal of requirements for proof of citizenship in voting, reinstating the Obama administration’s expansive birth control mandate, ending cash bail, race-based college admissions, the elimination of ACT/SAT test scores as a factor in college admissions, and advocated for a Department of Justice investigation into alleged right-wing extremist involvement in 2020 riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin. LCCRUL leads the Election Protection Coalition consisting of left-of-center organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR); the Alliance for Youth Action; and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). [6]

In 2010, Epps-Johnson began working for the New Organizing Institute, a now-defunct left-progressive group which trained digital organizers and campaigners for the Democratic Party and left-of-center political causes. Epps-Johnson started as a deputy data manager of the organization’s Voting Information Project. She was then promoted to manage the project and eventually became NOI’s election administration director.

Hospitals all around the country are delaying scans and procedures for patients because of a shortage of IV contrast dye, a liquid that’s injected into the veins to make organs and blood vessels easier to see on a CT scan or an X-ray.
