US can’t replace Russian coal supplies to Europe – industry
EU scrambles to find new suppliers as ban looms
The US coal mining industry is unable to expand production to replace Russian coal on the European market, the country’s biggest exporter said on Tuesday.
The comment follows a proposal by the European Commission to impose a ban on coal imports from Russia as part of a wider package of sanctions on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
“I don’t see any ability for the industry to expand production. It’s like looking at a sweet dessert that you just can’t reach,” Ernie Thrasher, chief executive officer of Xcoal Energy & Resources LLC., the US’ biggest exporter, told Bloomberg.
The US is among the world’s top five coal exporters, and sells most of its coal to India, Brazil and South Korea.
According to Thrasher, most of the US coal output has already been sold under long-term contracts and there are few spare tons to deliver to Europe. With coal being the dirtiest fossil fuel, there has been little investment in new capacity, he explained, adding that tight labor markets and supply-chain bottlenecks caused by the coronavirus pandemic would also make it difficult to deliver extra tons for export.
According to media reports, potential buyers from some EU countries have already approached Indonesia and Australia, the world’s largest thermal coal exporters. But those countries have limited capacity as well. The EU wants to move away from Russian supplies, which meet 70% of Europe’s demand for thermal coal.
Shares of US coal miners surged after the European Union announced its sanctions plan against Russia on Tuesday. Coal prices in the US have been on the rise, surpassing $100 a ton last week for the first time since 2008.

Belarus denounces an attack with missiles launched from Ukraine
The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has assured that the anti-aircraft defenses of his country intercepted several missiles launched from Ukraine against his territory.

Many EU states are in “a direct war” with Russia and are “angry” with Belgrade for refusing to go along with sanctions, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference two days after attending a meeting between the 27 EU leaders and six heads of government from the West Balkans, Vucic claimed the Balkans “were not important that day” for the EU, as the bloc is “completely at war with Russia” and its priority was to provide Ukraine and Moldova with EU candidate status.
“Viktor Orban [Hungarian prime minister] said that in the economic sense, Serbia and Montenegro are much more ready to be part of the EU than some other countries. But who cares?” Vucic remarked.
He explained that Serbia is now in a difficult position due to the pressure to join EU members in imposing sanctions on Russia. The president stressed he is aware of “how angry many of them are” over the issue.
“Many EU countries are in a direct war against Russia. They send howitzers, planes, S-300s to Ukraine, and how do you think they will treat us? They are not in our shoes as we are not in theirs, and that is why our position is extremely difficult. Will it be easier? Well, it won't,” Vucic said.
However, he pledged that Serbia will continue to pursue its European path as “there must be a rational and pragmatic approach in politics, which takes the interests into account.”
He noted that in Serbia, 300,000 people work directly and 500,000 indirectly for foreign companies, two thirds of which are from the EU.
“If you do not understand how important the EU is to us, I cannot change that,” he said, while claiming the West fails to appreciate how important it is for Serbia to refrain from anti-Russia sanctions, and to maintain good relations with both Russia and China.
Addressing the economic situation in Europe, Vucic gave a gloomy forecast, saying if the conflict in Donbass does not end with a truce, the world will face “a worse world war than the previous one.”
“A little man from the Balkans says that. I hope that they will start peace negotiations, otherwise we will all go,” he added.
On Thursday, the day when Ukraine and Moldova were granted EU candidate status, Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said a military conflict with Russia appears to be the condition for fast-track accession to the European Union.
Pointing out that Ukraine falls short of the standards which are “so carefully applied to Balkan countries,” the minister claimed Kiev's “participation in the war was enough to start negotiations” on its EU membership. He added that if getting into war with someone is the only way to speed up Serbia’s accession to the EU, then “it is not worth it.”
Earlier this month the interior minister said his country was not interested in diminishing its “closeness and cooperation” with Moscow, and that by trying to force Belgrade to impose sanctions on Russia, the West simply seeks to “absolve” itself of its own crimes. North American cereal will have about $2.4 billion sales and include cereal brands in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The plant-based foods business will include Kellogg’s MorningStar Farms brand and have approximately $340 million in sales.
Management teams to lead both the North American cereal and plant-based foods businesses will be announced at a later date, according to the company. Both initially will have their headquarters in Battle Creek.
Kellogg Co. said breaking the business up into three independent companies will allow them to focus on specific strategic priorities, executive with agility and operational flexibility and shape distinctive corporate cultures.
The spin-offs are intended to result in tax-free distributions of North American cereal and plant-based foods shares to Kellogg Co. shareowners. Shareholders would receive shares in the two spin-off entities on a pro-rata basis relative to their Kellogg holdings at the date for each spin-off, according to the company.

Ten incumbent and four newly-elected Republican senators planned to work with their House colleagues to demand the formation of an audit commission to investigate election “irregularities” in the 2020 election. Absent an audit, the group of senators, including Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) pledged to reject the Electoral College results from the disputed states.
The Hail Mary effort was doomed to fail; yet the American people would have heard hours of debate related to provable election fraud over the course of the day.
And no one opposed the effort more than ex-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
During a conference call on December 31, 2020, McConnell urged his Republican Senate colleagues to abandon plans to object to the certification, insisting his vote to certify the 2020 election results would be “the most consequential I have ever cast” in his 36-year Senate career.
From the Senate floor on the afternoon of January 6, McConnell gave a dramatic speech warning of the dire consequences to the country should Republicans succeed in delaying the vote. He downplayed examples of voting fraud and even mocked the fact that Trump-appointed judges rejected election lawsuits.
“The voters, the courts, and the States have all spoken,” McConnell insisted. “If we overrule them, it would damage our Republic forever. If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral.”
Roughly six hours later, McConnell got his way. Cowed by the crowd of largely peaceful Americans allowed into the building by Capitol police, most Republican senators backed off the audit proposal. McConnell, echoing hyperbolic talking points about an “insurrection” seeded earlier in the day by Democratic lawmakers and the news media, gloated. “They tried to disrupt our democracy,” he declared on the Senate floor after Congress reconvened around 8 p.m. “This failed attempt to obstruct Congress, this failed insurrection, only underscores how crucial the task before us is for our Republic.”
Congress officially certified the Electoral College results early the next day.
While he projected a sober tone to the American public, McConnell privately was ecstatic, a new book about the 2020 election reveals. “I feel exhilarated by the fact that this fellow finally, totally discredited himself,” McConnell told New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin late on January 6, 2021 about Trump. Martin is the co-author of This Will Not Pass, of which excerpts were published in the Washington Post this week. Martin in the book recounts his midnight conversation with McConnell.
Trump, McConnell claimed, “put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger,” Martin writes. He then asked the reporter what he had heard about members plotting to invoke the 25th Amendment. Calling Trump a “despicable person,” McConnell reportedly bragged how he “crushed the sons of bitches” on January 6 and promised to do the same to them in the 2022 primaries.
Now, that seems like an oddly celebratory demeanor for someone who just survived an “attack on our democracy” and an alleged attempt to “overthrow” the seat of government power, doesn’t it?
And why was McConnell so certain the four-hour disturbance would spell the end for Donald Trump?
Further—and more importantly—why did McConnell’s office fail to protect the Capitol on January 6?

The deputy chief of IDF Unit 8200, “Col. U.,” on Wednesday said that his intelligence agency warned the United States of attempts to hack the country's power plants in time to thwart the cyberattack.
Although this was not the first time these warnings to the US have been made public, it was the first time a Unit 8200 official had discussed sensitive cyber intelligence in public.
The most well-known example was Israel’s 2017 warning to the US about Russia’s Kaspersky antivirus software being used as a way to backdoor spy on them or plant malware.
Col. U. recalled that an “adversary [Iran] attacked water facilities in Israel. We saw this attacker attempting to poison the water in an attempt to claim human lives. We mitigated that threat far ahead.
“Another adversary attacked Israel [and in the process of stopping the cyberattack,] we also found that they were attempting to target US power plants as well,” he said. “This was the first indication of this attack. It enabled preventing this threat through tight collaboration with our fantastic American partners.”
In 2020, then-energy minister Yuval Steinitz revealed an attempted cyberattack on Israel’s energy sector, which was thwarted.

'All my hives will be eradicated': Beekeeper heartbreak as NSW imposes emergency biosecurity measures
New South Wales beekeepers and industry groups say emergency measures imposed to stop the spread of a deadly parasite will devastate the industry and have potentially significant knock-on effects on honey production and agriculture.

The Varroa destructor, commonly called varroa mite, spreads viruses that cripple bees' ability to fly, gather food and pollinate crops.
It was first detected on Wednesday in two of the six hives used to monitor biosecurity at the Port of Newcastle during a routine inspection.
It was also discovered in the hives of a nearby commercial beekeeper.
The detections have triggered a halt on all movement of bees across New South Wales, hives within a 10-kilometre radius of the Port will also be destroyed.
"I'm in that zone," said David Vial, an apiarist at Williamtown who is also Amateur Beekeepers' Association vice-president.
"I've got about 150 beehives on my property at Williamtown and by the looks of it all my hives will be eradicated," he said.
"I have a queen bee breeding program which is going to be terminated straight away."
Mr Vial said the financial impact would be huge for his business.
"I'm probably looking at, over the next couple of years, maybe a quarter of million dollars in lost sales," he said.
"And not only that but lots of the genetics that I've been breeding as well, that will be lost; I've got to start from scratch again."
Measures vital for control
New South Wales Farmers Association president James Jackson said he welcomed the emergency measures put in place.
"With these sorts of situations, regardless of the species or the issue, humans moving animals or plants around the state is a big risk to disseminating or increasing the size of the problem," he said.
"So, eradication becomes significantly harder if it's all over the place."
Mr Jackson said while the measures were necessary, he agreed they would have a big impact on apiarists and beyond.
"The impact of this if it gets away is about $70 million to the actual honey industry," he said.
"And then it's going to impact the pollination industry, the almond industry and other horticulture crops are reliant on pollination so that the impact could be quite a lot greater."

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the lawsuit calling into question the 2020 election. The media immediately jumps on it saying that the lawsuit relied on “baseless conspiracy theories” spread by Trump and his supporters that the election was stolen in favor of Joe Biden. This is in itself FAKE NEWS and a deliberate attempt by the media to continue this narrative undermining the corruption in the election system of the United States. The media refuses to explain the truth for, in fact, their own conspiracy theory was not the basis for dismissing the lawsuit.
Among others, the lawsuit named Facebook and Denver-based Dominion Voting Systems, whose election machines remain the focus of voter fraud allegations. The court ruling had NOTHING to do with the validity of the allegations. The court found that eight plaintiffs from across the U.S. had no standing to assert that the outcome of the election “violated the constitutional rights of every registered voter in the United States.” “NO STANDING” means they had no right to bring the action and it has nothing to do with the validity of the claims.
U.S. Magistrate Judge N. Reid Neureiter dismissed the lawsuit in April 2021, finding the plaintiffs failed to show they had suffered specific injuries due to the election result and thus had no standing to bring the lawsuit.
Clearly, the courts just do not want to get involved and they will continue to use every possible loophole they can argue NOT to rule on the claims. The Judiciary has simply REFUSED to defend the Constitution or to allow such a case to go to trial and let the people decide on the evidence. Their refusal to address this issue leaves the 2022 election ripe for civil unrest for whoever loses, will argue it was rigged. That is probably part of the Panic Cycle our computer has targeted for the 2022 mid-term election.

For Judge Manning to hear and consider whether she herself has committed a fraud upon her own Court through the Judge falsifying the facts and filling the Court records with her "judicial perjuries". The Judge does NOT seem to understand that such a hearing with her presiding, is outlawed by Anglo-Saxon law, that is, for a person TO SIT AS A JUDGE IN THEIR OWN CASE.
Ivy tells the Judge that the remedy he and his client Kolody seek is for the Judge to expunge from the Court records all of Judge Manning's rulings favoring The Coca-Cola Company and Simon Marketing. Judge Manning said she will take the matter of her own fraud upon the Court and instances brought up of newly discovered evidence, "under advisement". All Americans can expect to get regular boosters in the future, according to Fauci, who compared the situation to annual flu shots.
“We know that immunity wanes over time,” he said.
“Depending upon what this virus does, there is certainly a reasonably good chance that we will have the same sort of situation that we have with influenza, where every year you have to re-boost people to keep that protection up,” Fauci added.

The news fueled anger across the tech world as these requests run roughshod over the principles and policies upon which virtual private networks and other security software are based.
VPNs are technology aimed to protect users' internet privacy and secure their data inside an encrypted tunnel. They aim to prevent third parties from tracking users' activities as well as accessing their sensitive information.
It might not only affect people’s privacy, but also freedom of speech.

First steps towards a VPN ban?
With most VPN providers vocally defending their no-logs policies and some others even threatening to pull their servers out of the country (opens in new tab), the government might decide to go further and ban all the services that don't comply with its demands.
On the other hand, it was less than a year ago when the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs proposed the banning of VPN service in India to counter cybersecurity threats.
Although, Tyrell thinks that there is still a concrete possibility that the directive would change: "It is difficult to imagine a scenario in which all local companies are able to adjust their infrastructure and operations in time, therefore there is still a chance that the proposed wording and timeline of the regulation may not be final."
What's at stake for users' privacy?
According to the latest statistics from AtlasVPN, India has more than 270 million (opens in new tab) active VPN users who enjoy a better network security, online anonymity and geo-restricted content.
Furthermore, ProtonVPN told TechRadar: "The rules would not only make it harder for people to protect their data online but also give the government more tools to monitor people’s locations and identities while eroding civil liberties more generally."
That's especially worrying in a country where many journalists using this software to cope with a media freedom under attack - India just dropped to 150th out of 180 countries (opens in new tab) in the 2022 Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index.
And it's not just privacy that's a concern, as the change could also mean higher fees for India VPN users.
As Tyrell from NordVPN explains: "From what it seems, the new law will definitely create additional difficulties for the internet infrastructure providers and their operations. Overhead in operation costs may translate into increased costs to end users which for some people might complicate internet access in general."

An appellate court has ruled for the first time that an insured restaurant can seek COVID-19 shutdown damages.
The Oceana Grill on Bourbon St. in New Orleans had originally lost their request to seek damages from its insurer, but that decision has now been reversed on appeal.
“The physical presence of COVID-19 substantially diminished the usable space of the property, as tables needed to be pushed farther apart, and resulted in economic losses due to the slowdown of the appellants’ business,” Chief Judge Terri Love wrote in the ruling.
Cajun Conti, the company that owns Oceana Grill, sued Lloyd’s of London for damages on the day they were shut down — March 20, 2020. They argued that COVID-19 had caused property damage by forcing it to close — and eventually reduce the amount of seating in the establishment to comply with social distancing rules.
“Oceana Grill’s parent company was one of the first, if not the first, to file a COVID insurance coverage lawsuit, though many more followed. The general consensus was that the pandemic wouldn’t qualify for business interruption assistance, as it was created to cover closures due to property damage from natural disasters. This court, however, found that the wording is open to interpretation and that physical damage did not have to be ‘obvious and observable,'” Nola reports.
One of the policyholder attorneys involved said the “dam has broken” with the ruling, paving the way for other businesses to do the same, according to a report from Reuters.
Lloyd’s attorney Virginia (Ginger) Dodd of Phelps Dunbar told Reuters that she believes the ruling was inconsistent with “ten federal circuit courts of appeal and every other state appellate court.”
“We will pursue all options to address what we believe to be an outlier decision,” Dodd added.
Reuters noted that “while Wednesday’s appellate decision is the first to find coverage for COVID-19 income losses under an all-risk property insurance policy, a state appellate court in New York on Monday affirmed a Bronx judge’s ruling that allowed the New York Botanical Garden to sue its Pollution Liability Insurer, Allied World Assurance, for denying its COVID-related loss of business income claim and for breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.”
“This lawsuit was all about coverage,” Daniel Davillier, an attorney representing Oceana Grill’s owner, told Nola. “If you don’t have coverage you can’t claim any damages. There are a lot of people out there who suffered losses during the pandemic who’ve been waiting to see how this turns out.”
