Pope declares 'zero tolerance' for Catholic Church abuse, takes personal responsibility for ending it

Pope Francis says he has taken it on himself to rid the Catholic Church of sexual abuse, telling CNN's partner channel CNN Portugal that he was "responsible that it doesn't happen anymore."

In an exclusive, wide-ranging interview in Rome last month, the Pontiff said the church had "zero tolerance" for abuse and said that "a priest cannot remain a priest if he is an abuser."

The church's response to sex abuse scandals has become one of the defining themes of Francis' time as Pope, and he told CNN Portugal that every case of abuse within the church "hurts" him.

Multiple reports detailing decades of sexual abuse, systemic failures and cover-ups across multiple countries have been released since Francis became the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics in 2013. While he was criticized for some of his actions — such as when he defended a Chilean bishop accused of covering up a sex scandal in 2018, a decision he later described as a "grave error" — he has since taken a firm stance on the issues and introduced some reforms.

In 2019, he abolished Vatican secrecy rules for cases of sexual abuse and put in place new rules that made it mandatory for the first time for all dioceses to set up systems for reporting abuse and cover-ups.

Two years later, he issued the most extensive revision to Catholic Church law in four decades, insisting that bishops take action against clerics who abuse minors and vulnerable adults. The rules also demanded action against priests who commit fraud or attempt to ordain women.

Addressing the topic, Francis said he didn't believe celibacy played a role in causing the abuse.

So, it is simply the monstrosity of a man or woman of the church who is psychologically ill or evil and uses their position for their personal satisfaction," he added.

The Pope also revealed that he has been in contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to him on the phone.

He said he has in the past met both Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin when they visited him in Rome. But when asked what he could tell the two, the Pope said: "I don't know.

"I had a dialogue with both [of them]. They both visited me here before the war. And I always believe that in dialogue we always move forward," the Pope said. "You know who doesn't know how to talk? Animals. They are pure instinct."

Francis has been criticized for some of his comments about Russia's war on Ukraine. The huge Chinese city of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan province, extended its coronavirus lockdown and mass testing program on Sunday, trapping most of its 21 million citizens in their homes. At least 70 cities are now under full or partial lockdown, including the city where the Covid-19 pandemic began, Wuhan.

Chengdu went under lockdown on Thursday, to the surprise and terror of its inhabitants, who were given no time to prepare. On Sunday, city officials announced the lockdown would be extended for most of the city, with the exception of two small districts.

“The city’s Covid situation is severe and complex. The number of new infections remains relatively high and community transmission risk still exists,” a local health official warned.

No timetable for ending the lockdown was given, but officials said mass testing would continue through Wednesday to reach “Covid Zero in the community as soon as possible.” Supposedly only 185 coronavirus cases have been detected in the entire province.

Several major foreign corporations have facilities in Chengdu. Volkswagen and Foxconn said they will keep their factories running under a “closed loop system,” which essentially means quarantining employees at the factory so they can keep working, often requiring them to sleep on the factory floor. Hitachi announced its two Chengdu factories would continue running at “reduced capacity,” while Volvo suspended production at its plant.

The New York Times (NYT) on Monday spoke to Chengdu residents who said “everyone is scared” the city will end up like Shanghai, which was locked down for two months this spring, forcing imprisoned citizens to scramble for food and medicine.

Biden’s Energy Secretary Says California’s Ban on Gas-Powered Vehicle Sales is a Model for the Rest of the Country

Joe Biden’s incompetent Energy Secretary said the rest of the country should follow California’s radical ban on gas-powered vehicle sales.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm touted California’s ban on gas-powered cars even though the state issued a flex alert asking Californians not to charge their electric vehicles during a sweltering heatwave to avoid rolling blackouts.

“Do you think what California is doing could or would be a national model?” the reporter asked Granholm.

“Could be! Could be!” Granholm said.

The California Independent System Operator extended a Flex Alert into the weekend amid a sweltering heatwave in an effort to avoid rolling blackouts.

Last week, just days after passing a law banning new sales of gasoline powered cars by 2035, California urged residents to avoid charging their electric vehicles during peak hours to avoid power outages.

“During a Flex Alert, consumers are urged to reduce energy use from 4-9 p.m. when the system is most stressed because demand for electricity remains high and there is less solar energy available. The top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights.“

The company that manages the power grid in California extended the Flex Alert on Friday evening and once again asked people to reduce their energy use.

Temperatures soared into the triple digits in Southern California for Labor Day weekend.

Even the coastal cities in SoCal (which are usually cooler) were under a heat advisory all weekend.

“Californians are strongly urged to lower electricity use by setting thermostats to 78 or higher, health permitting, avoid using major appliances, and turning off all unnecessary lights,” officials announced Friday evening. “Tomorrow’s Flex Alert is the fourth consecutive call for conservation, as much of the state remains gripped in an extensive heat wave.”

Can a smarter anon than me explain why would a company want to do business in a state with a high minimum wage. IF the value of money varies from state to state but the value of the dollar at the federal level remains the same. Cost of living problems and all that. They are still spending 15-20 in cali per hour vs the federal min is still 7.25. Czech PM Blames Russian Propaganda For Mass Protests In Prague

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala is blaming pro-Russian forces for mass demonstrations this weekend that saw tens of thousands of people protest against the government, the European Union and NATO amid soaring energy prices and inflation.

The “Czechia First” demonstration saw 70,000 people gather to protest the government in a development the Czech prime minister is blaming on elements influenced by Russian propaganda.

“It is clear that Russian propaganda and disinformation campaigns repeatedly appear on our territory and that someone is simply succumbing to them,” Fiala said, as reported by Euractiv.

Protesters, brought together by the Communist Party, the Freedom party, the Direct Democratic Party, and other groups labeled as “radical”–both far-left and far-right–called on the government to address soaring energy prices and the highest cost of living since the early 1990s for everything from housing to consumer goods.

Protesters called for a new deal with Russia for gas supplies, just a day after Moscow said natural gas flows through Nord Stream 1 to Europe that had been cut off for maintenance would not be restored on Saturday as scheduled, and would be delayed indefinitely.

Inflation has hit 17% and is marching towards 20% in the coming months, according to Fortune, citing the Czech central bank.

The mass protests also came a day after a no-confidence vote against the five-party coalition government failed.

While the prime minister blamed Russian influence, other coalition government officials warned against sidelining real economic issues facing the people.

News reports noted that some demonstrators donned T-shirts favoring Russian President Vladimir Putin and some carried anti-EU and anti-NATO posters.

Social unrest has been on the rise in Europe since Russia invaded Ukraine, with Western sanctions and soaring energy prices creating a toxic mix along with an influx of Ukrainian refugees. Tensions are rising ahead of a winter that is expected to see a worsening of the energy crisis.

1 dead, 9 missing after floatplane crashes in Puget Sound

The U.S. Coast Guard was continuing to search Monday for nine people, including a child, who were missing after a floatplane crashed in the waters of Puget Sound northwest of Seattle.

The body of a 10th person was recovered by a good Samaritan on Sunday after the crash was reported at 3:11 p.m., Coast Guard spokesperson William Colclough said Monday.

The Northwest Seaplanes flight left Friday Harbor, a popular tourist destination in the San Juan Islands, and was headed to Renton Municipal Airport, the company's base, Colclough said.

Israel U-turns on controversial requirement for foreigners

Demand to declare a relationship with a Palestinian as an entry requirement into West Bank is dropped amid backlash

Israel has removed a controversial border-passage requirement for foreigners to declare their relationships with Palestinians, following an international backlash and pressure from Washington.

On Sunday, the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli Defense Ministry’s department for Palestinian civil affairs, released an updated version of its guidance on “Procedure for entry and residence of foreigners in the Judea and Samaria area.”

The document does not include several provisions which were part of the initial draft, published in February and which were supposed to come into force on Monday. Among the removed pieces is a requirement that any foreigner “forming a couple” with a West Bank resident after entering the territory should notify Israeli authorities within 30 days of the engagement, wedding, or the beginning of cohabitation, “whichever occurs first.”

The new rulebook does not require foreign spouses of Palestinians to spend half a year outside the West Bank after 27 months of marriage for a “cooling off period,” as was suggested before, and allows the extension of foreigners’ visas from 90 to 180 days.

COGAT also waived quotas on visiting lecturers and students at Palestinian universities, which had been set in the original draft at 100 teachers and 150 students. These quota proposals were condemned by the European Union, whose Erasmus+ exchange program would have been seriously impacted.

The new regulations, which are not applicable to foreigners visiting Israel or Israeli settlements, are supposed to take effect on October 20 for a two-year pilot period.

“At the end of the pilot period, the situation will be evaluated and a decision will be made regarding whether to keep the procedure in force,” the document states.

US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides acknowledged the revisions, stressing in a statement that he had “aggressively engaged with the Government of Israel on these draft rules” and will continue to do so.

“I continue to have concerns with the published protocols, particularly regarding COGAT’s role in determining whether individuals invited by Palestinian academic institutions are qualified to enter the West Bank, and the potential negative impact on family unity,” Nides said.

He called on Israeli officials to ensure fair and equal treatment of all foreigners traveling to the West Bank.

Russia punishes Sean Penn and Ben Stiller

The two Hollywood heavyweights have made it onto Moscow’s latest sanctions list

Moscow has imposed sanctions on 25 US citizens including actors Sean Penn and Ben Stiller, barring them from ever entering Russia. The announcement was made Monday on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website in retaliation for Joe Biden’s “ever-expanding personal sanctions against Russian citizens.”

The list includes a number of high-ranking US officials, Democratic and Republican members of Congress, representatives of the business community, and “cultural figures.” Among these are Hollywood actors Ben Stiller and Sean Penn, both of whom had previously visited Ukraine and held personal meetings with the country’s president Vladimir Zelensky amid the ongoing military conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

Stiller, who acts as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency, was the latest to meet with the Ukrainian leader, having traveled to Kiev back in June. During their meeting, the actor praised Zelensky as a “hero” and admired the way he had “rallied the country [and] the world.”

The ‘Zoolander’ star also visited a Ukrainian refugee center in Poland before traveling to the western city of Lviv, as well as Irpin and Makarov, in order to bring more attention to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Sean Penn has also maintained close ties with Zelensky since Moscow launched its military operation and is currently working on a documentary about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The 61-year-old actor initially traveled to Kiev shortly before the fighting broke out in late February to film a documentary for Vice Media about Kiev’s war against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

The Oscar-winning star has so far made several trips to Ukraine and its borders, and has had two personal meetings with the Ukrainian leader. Penn has been very vocal in his support for Ukraine and has repeatedly called on the international community to send more aid to the Kiev regime.

Moscow says its decision to blacklist the actors, as well as a number of US politicians and business figures, comes in response to “the hostile actions of US authorities, which continue to follow a Russophobic course, destroying bilateral ties and escalating confrontation between Russia and the United States.” Russia has vowed that such measures will continue to be met with equal force.

Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project Files FOIA Lawsuit for Key DOJ, NARA Documents

Attorneys representing the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project are suing the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for refusing to grant expedited processing of the conservative non-profit’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for copies of communications at the center of the FBI’s controversial Aug. 8 raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

The government’s refusal concerned two Oversight Project FOIA requests. The DOJ request sought copies of all communications between any DOJ employees and entities outside the government, including those in the news media. The NARA request sought copies of all communications between that agency and the Biden White House, DOJ, the FBI, and staff members working for Trump.

The Oversight Project’s request for the expedited handling, which is provided under certain circumstances by the FOIA, was based on the intense public interest that exploded as soon as news broke of the raid involving more than 30 FBI agents lasting more than 11 hours and resulting in the removal of thousands of documents from the estate.

During the raid, which was based on the DOJ’s belief that Trump illegally kept highly secret, classified documents in unsecured facilities at the estate, FBI agents inspected the wardrobe of former First Lady Melania Trump.

Agents also seized an estimated 11,000 non-classified documents and photographs. A total of 103 documents marked with various levels of classification were also seized by the agents. A photograph released by the FBI following the raid reportedly showed multiple folders bearing classification markings that were empty.

The Epoch Times has also reported that the search warrant that enabled the raid specified that agents could also seize information regarding the retrieval, storage, or transmission of national defense information or classified material; any government and/or presidential records created between Jan. 20, 2017, and Jan. 20, 2021; and any evidence “of the knowing alteration, destruction, or concealment of any government and/or Presidential Records, or of any documents with classification markings.”

State Department Approves $1.1 Billion Weapons Package for Taiwan, Pentagon to Speed Up Arms Sales

The Department of Defense has set up the "tiger team" to accelerate global weapons sales in a bid to compete with Russia and China.

Amid soaring tensions with the U.S. and China, the State Department approved a previously revealed White House plan to supply $1.1 billion in arms to Taiwan, the Associated Press reported on Friday. This announcement has angered Beijing which warned of "counter-measures" if the plans are not revoked. Among US lawmakers there is ample bipartisan support for arming the island and the required Congressional approval is virtually guaranteed.

Concurrently, the Pentagon is working to increase the speed at which the US can sell weapons to global partners as "roadblocks" in the system are slowing things down, leading potential customers to buy less expensive Russian and Chinese advanced equipment.

According to the State Department, the arms package for Taipei includes $355 million for 60 Harpoon air-to-sea missiles, $85 million for 100 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, as well as a $655 million logistics support package to maintain and upgrade the island’s Raytheon-made early warning radar system. Thus far, this is the single largest arms sale for Taiwan approved during the Joe Biden administration.

At the same time, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing US officials, the Pentagon has formed a task force to expedite the process of supplying global partners with weapons to compete with China and Russia. Last month, the "tiger team," comprised of senior officials, was set up to examine what the Defense Department sees as inefficiencies and "roadblocks" in the foreign military sales program overseen by the State Department. Foggy Bottom is adding input to the Pentagon’s assessment. Among other things, concerns about transferring sensitive technology slows the process, leading foreign governments to look elsewhere for cheaper, advanced equipment. Officials worry this gives Beijing and Moscow a competitive advantage.

"US officials who work with countries on initial requests for new drones, for example, could be trained to help those countries to draft those letters better, removing roadblocks that pop up because the initial request was too broad or triggered other security concerns" a defense official told the Journal.

Azerbaijan's defense ministry announced Monday the start of joint air force exercises with Turkey, named TurAz Qartali 2022.

The event was attended by Azerbaijani and Turkish servicemen, the head of the Executive Power of [Azerbaijan's] Ganja city, Niyazi Bayramov, and other guests," the ministry said in a statement.

Armenia, Azerbaijan agree to further collaborate on peace treaty work

On August 31, EU Council President Charles Michel said that Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to step up efforts in advancing the conclusion of a peace treaty.

Long-awaited report on death of Al Jazeera journalist says troops misidentified the targets of their shots as Palestinian gunmen; criminal probe will not be opened

The military on Monday said there was a “high probability” an Israeli soldier accidentally killed veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh nearly four months ago, based on its investigation into the incident.

The 51-year-old Palestinian-American journalist, who was wearing a vest marked “Press” and a helmet, was killed during clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen while covering an Israeli military operation in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank on May 11.

The Israel Defense Forces initially blamed Palestinian gunmen for the shooting, but later acknowledged that Abu Akleh could also have been killed by Israeli soldiers.

On Monday, a military official told reporters that a soldier had been identified who had “with very high likelihood” shot the journalist by mistake.

“He misidentified her. His reports in real-time point to a misidentification,” the officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Based on the final findings of its probe, the IDF said it was still “not possible to unequivocally determine the source of the gunfire” that killed Abu Akleh, but that “there is a high probability that Abu Akleh was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen during an exchange of fire in which life-threatening, widespread and indiscriminate shots were fired toward IDF soldiers.”

Federal agents search US properties of Russian tycoon Vekselberg

Federal agents in the United States have searched several properties linked to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, whose superyacht was seized in Spain earlier this year at the request of the United States.

The FBI said on September 1 that its agents and officers of Homeland Security searched a Park Avenue high-rise apartment in New York, an estate in Southampton, New York, and the enclave of Fisher Island in Miami, Florida.

No further details were provided, while the mentioned properties are believed to be linked to the 65-year-old Vekselberg, who is known as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

There was no immediate comment from either Vekselberg or his representatives.

In April, Spanish police seized a superyacht worth around $120 million that belonged to Vekselberg following a request from the United States, which alleges the vessel violates U.S. bank fraud, money laundering, and sanction statutes.

The U.S. investigation alleges that Vekselberg bought the yacht, named the Tango, in 2011 and has owned it since then. It also alleges that Vekselberg used shell companies to hide his interest in the Tango to avoid bank oversight into U.S.-dollar transactions related to it.

Vekselberg, a billionaire with ties to Russia’s mining industry, and those working on his behalf made payments through U.S. banks for the support and maintenance of the Tango, the warrant for the seizure of the yacht said. This included a payment for a December 2020 stay at a luxury resort in the Maldives and mooring fees for the yacht.

Vekselberg was first sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in April 2018. More sanctions were added on March 12 of this year following the start of Russia’s ongoing unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

It was one of several superyachts linked to a Russian billionaire to be impounded as part of Europe’s efforts to pressure Russian President Putin to pull out of Ukraine.

Tiffany Haddish has broken her silence on the child sexual abuse claims made against her in a recent lawsuit.

Haddish shared a statement on Instagram on Monday morning.

"I know people have a bunch of questions. I get it. I'm right there with you," she wrote on Instagram. "Unfortunately, because there is an ongoing legal case, there's very little that I can say right now."

The "Girls Trip" actress revealed she couldn't talk about the allegations in detail because the legal case is ongoing.

The lawsuit states that Haddish and comedian Aries Spears convinced a 14-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy to film sexually suggestive video sketches starting in 2013. The brother and sister alleged one was titled "Through a Pedophile's Eyes" and was uploaded to "Funny or Die." The sketch was reportedly removed in 2018.

"But, clearly, while this sketch was intended to be comedic, it wasn't funny at all - and I deeply regret having agreed to act in it. I really look forward to being able to share a lot more about this situation as soon as I can," Haddish added.

The brother and sister are only identified as "Jane Doe" and "John Doe" in the filing.

In one alleged video, the two kids were instructed by Haddish to start "moaning and making sexual noises as they both ate [a] sandwich [from opposite ends] in a manner that simulated the act of fellatio," the filing claims.

"Haddish verbally explained what was expected of Plaintiff Jane Doe and then showed Plaintiff Jane Doe how to give fellatio, including movements, noises, moaning, and groaning," it said.

The skit "Through a Pedophile's Eyes," which was filmed in 2014, "shows Spears lusting over the 7-year-old child and molesting him throughout the video."

"Haddish was present during the filming of the entire video and aided, abetted, and watched Spears sexually molest a child," according to the lawsuit.

The two comedians are accused of intentional infliction of emotional distress, sexual battery, gross negligence, sexual harassment and sexual abuse of a minor. Haddish is additionally accused of breach of fiduciary duty, negligent supervision/failure to warn and constructive fraud.

Haddish's lawyer Andrew Brettler called the accusations "bogus claims."

The plaintiff’s mother, Trizah Morris, "has been trying to assert these bogus claims against Ms. Haddish for several years," the actress’ lawyer Andrew Brettler said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

ELECTRIC CAR SCAM: Europeans could be paying $270 to charge their electric cars by early 2023 as electricity rates explode

Record highs are being set around the globe for the cost of electricity, and countries in Europe are experiencing the worst of it. The entire scam of electric cars is now being realized by the majority of the populace, as they finally realize it costs more to own, maintain and ‘fuel’ an electric car than any standard gasoline-fueled automobile. Don’t believe it?

Right now, in Europe, it costs about $135 to charge a Tesla to full, and that price is on track to DOUBLE by the new year. That means it will cost $270 to fully charge the average electric vehicle (EV) in Germany and France. Currently, one euro is equal to one US dollar. That’s just the beginning of insane costs incurred to support the EV nightmare. Let’s do the math.

Electric vehicles cost SIX TIMES more to own and maintain than gas-powered vehicles, and still rely on fossil fuels to get charged up

The electricity that charges and fuels battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles comes from power grids, which mostly rely on fossil fuels. Oops. So much for all that bragging about that smaller carbon footprint. The price of an average electric car is a whopping $66,000 in the USA right now, and that price is increasing at over 13 percent every year. The monthly payment on that electric car will run you upwards of $1250. Expect Bidenflation to drive that price upwards significantly, and soon.

The typical 40kWh battery pack needed to charge most mainstream electric vehicles, when fully charged, lasts for about 150 miles. By the way, it takes around 8 hours to charge from empty-to-full with a 7kW charging point. What a nightmare. Now, the average person drives about 15,000 miles per year. That means they spend about $42,000 per year to charge an electric car to go the same number of miles a gas powered car would go. So charge that car all year for $270 to go 150 miles each time, and that’s 100 charges at $270 totaling $27,000 per year.

Add the monthly payment of $1250 for 12 months to that ($15,000) and now you’ve spent $42,000 in one year to own and “fuel” that electric car next year. We still haven’t even calculated any maintenance plan or repairs, and guess what? A new electric car battery, should that battery die, on average right now costs about $14,000. So now you’re at $56,000, and you’re just one year in.

Meanwhile, the average gas-powered car gets around 30 miles (on the highway) to the gallon, and the average tank holds about 15 gallons, and the average price of gas in America is hovering around $4 per gallon. That’s expected to increase also. Let’s do the math on all of that and compare costs.

A full tank of gas costs $60, multiply that by 30 miles to the gallon, and you can travel 450 miles for $60. The average price of a decent new gas-powered automobile is around $45,000 now. Though that price is exorbitant, the monthly (lease) payment runs about $450. Add that up for a year ($5400) with a full tank of gas every week for a year ($3120), and you’ve spent about $8500.

OPEC+ to cut oil production by 100,000 BPD in October

On Monday, OPEC+ declared its intention to resume oil production at the August level and cut it by 100,000 barrels per day (BPD) in October.

In a statement, the OPEC+ alliance said that "[OPEC+ decodes to] Revert to the production level of August 2022 for OPEC and non-OPEC Participating Countries for the month of October 2022 as per the attached table, noting that the upward adjustment of 0.1 mb/d to the production level was intended only for the month of September 2022."

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that "This decision was made due to the fact that we considered the current situation on the market, made an assessment, and heard the report of the OPEC + technical committee."

OPEC+ will be meeting again in October and will continue to monitor the market situation, said Novak, given that the G7 group is set to put a price cap on Russian oil.

In his statement, Novak told Rossiya 24 that "Next, we will look at how the situation on the market will develop. Because there are a lot of uncertainties, including uncertainties associated with production in countries that are not part of the agreement, statements by individual G7 leaders and issues under consideration regarding placing a limit on the price for the purchase of Russian oil."

Mayor Among Nearly 200 ‘Ndrangheta Suspects Arrested in Italy

Italian authorities arrested nearly 200 'Ndrangheta-affiliated suspects, including a local mayor, politicians and businessmen, in the province of Cosenza, a part of ‘Ndrangheta's native region, Calabria, Italian state media reported.

Mayor Marcello Manna, of the town of Rende was put on house arrest, while 201 others were rounded up in a joint operation between Italy's Carabinieri and Guardia Finanza police forces.

According to a statement by the Carabinieri, the operation dismantled two ‘Ndrina, or clans of the ‘Ndrangheta with sweeping influence over the Cosenza region.

The operation was executed based on suspicion that the accused were involved in 'Ndrangheta-type criminal association to commit drug trafficking, illicit gambling and betting, money laundering and other crimes, the Carabinieri said.

The local outlet Cosenzachanel.it published the names of the suspects and said that 139 of them ended up in prison, 50 under house arrest, 12 were ordered now to leave their municipality and one lawyer was banned from practicing his profession. Another 52 suspects are still at large.

The ‘Ndrangheta is Italy’s most powerful criminal group, and responsible for a sizable chunk of the drug trade in Europe.

Originating from Calabria, they have surpassed fellow mafia groups like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and Neapolitan Camorra to take over the cocaine trade across Europe. Their illicit proceeds are believed to make up more than 3% of Italy’s total GDP.

‘Ndrangheta is known for their strict clan-like structures known as ‘Ndrine which has divided the group into a myriad of semi autonomous clans.

In addition to the suspects, the raid seized nearly US$72 million in illicit assets.

In addition to drug trafficking, according to the Carabinieri, the clans operating in Cosenza were heavily involved in state contract fraud schemes.

The Transgender Movement Isn’t Just Targeting Kids, It’s Targeting Families

Evidence continues to mount that a concerted effort is underway between major hospitals and public school systems to indoctrinate children with transgender ideology and push harmful, sometimes irreversible, medical procedures on minors — sometimes without the knowledge or consent of parents.

The point of the indoctrination, though, isn’t only to create more “gender-nonconforming” students. It’s to break down family structures and parental authority. The goal isn’t simply to teach and encourage transgenderism in our schools. It’s to lay claim to the students themselves, over and against their parents and families, for purposes that go far beyond the promotion of gender identity. After all, you can’t very well reshape society according to your utopian vision if something as solid as a family is standing in the way.

The solution is to break down the family. Most recently, Christopher Rufo reported this week that the largest children’s hospital in Chicago has partnered with local school districts to promote a radical transgender agenda, including sexually explicit materials that push “kink,” “BDSM,” and “trans-friendly” sex toys for children.

In his customary muckraking fashion, Rufo has obtained insider documents from Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago detailing a collaboration between transgender activists at the hospital and public school administrators throughout greater Chicago. The primary training document, a presentation titled “Beyond Binary: Gender in Schools,” encourages teachers and school administrators to promote “gender diversity” in their districts by affirming students who mistakenly believe they are members of the opposite sex, teaching a “non-binary understanding of gender” in classrooms, and aiming to disrupt “entrenched [gender] norms in western society” in hopes of creating a more “gender creative” world.

Don’t laugh, though. As outlandish as this might sound to most people, the targets of all this are impressionable students, many of whom are susceptible to such messages for the simple fact that they are dealing with the turbulent — albeit altogether normal — emotions and angst that accompany adolescence.

It’s worth quoting Rufo at length to get a sense of how lurid this program is. At the end of the “Beyond Binary” presentation, which was circulated to teachers in at least two Chicago school districts…

the hospital recommended a “Binder Exchange Program” to assist teenage girls in binding their breasts, a “kid friendly website for gender affirming gear,” which sells items such as artificial penis “packers” and female-to-male “trans masc pump[s],” and an “LGBTQ friendly sex shop for teens” that sells a range of “dildos,” “vibrators,” “harnesses,” “anal toys,” “trans-friendly toys,” and “kink & BDSM” equipment. The links include graphic descriptions of sadomasochism, bondage, pornography, and transgressive sex.

In addition to these materials on gender theory, Lurie Children’s Hospital has also publicly released a policy guide for school administrators, encouraging districts to adopt a “gender-affirming approach” to the curriculum; provide “gender-affirming children’s books” in school libraries; and allow students to compete in athletic events, use restrooms and locker rooms, and sleep in bunks during overnight school trips in accordance with their “gender identity,” rather than their biological sex. The hospital also encourages school districts to designate special “Gender Support Coordinators” to help facilitate children’s sexual and gender transitions, which, under the recommended “confidentiality” policy, can be kept secret from parents and families.

Rufo rightly identifies part of the dynamic here is the creation of a “school-to-clinic” pipeline. A cynic might say the motive is simply profit, since every transgender patient represents a lifetime of medical interventions and surgeries. But there is another motive, says Rufo. Transgender activists, he writes, “believe that they are in a struggle for liberation from the system of ‘cisheteropatriarchy’ — and each ‘gender non-conforming’ child is another tool in that fight.”

6.8 Magnitude Earthquake in China Kills 46, Additional Missing

On Monday, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan in China’s southwestern province leaving at least 46 people dead with 16 missing in subsequent landslides.

AP reports:

At least 46 people were reported killed and 16 missing in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Monday, triggering landslides and shaking buildings in the provincial capital of Chengdu, whose 21 million residents are already under a COVID-19 lockdown.

The quake struck a mountainous area in Luding county shortly after noon, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Sichuan, which sits on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau where tectonic plates meet, is regularly hit by earthquakes. Two quakes in June killed at least four people.

The death toll rose to 46 with 16 missing as the search for trapped people continued Monday night, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Earlier, authorities had reported 7 deaths in Luding county and 14 more in neighboring Shimian county to the south. Three of the dead were workers at the Hailuogou Scenic Area, a glacier and forest nature reserve.

Beijing Demands Explanations From US Over NSA Cyberattacks on Chinese Sites

Beijing demands explanations from the United States for the National Security Agency's (NSA) cyberattacks on various sites in China, including Northwestern Polytechnical University, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday, urging the US to immediately stop such illegal actions.

The US NSA has carried out more than 10,000 vicious cyberattacks on Chinese targets in recent years, took control of thousands of network devices and allegedly stole more than 140 gigabytes of valuable data, according to a technical report, published by the Chinese internet security company Qihoo 360 on Monday.

"China strongly condemns this and asks the US side to offer an explanation and immediately stop its unlawful moves," the diplomat said at a briefing, adding that the US actions seriously threaten China's national security and the security of individual citizens' personal information.

Mao noted that cyberspace security is a global common problem, and the US, as the country with the most powerful potential in the field of cyber technologies, should immediately stop using its advantages to steal classified information and carry out cyberattacks on other countries. The US should responsibly participate in the management of global cyberspace and play a constructive role in ensuring cyber security, according to the diplomat.

In April, Northwestern Polytechnical University, located in the city of Xi'An, said that it had been hacked. Following the university's statement, Xi'an Municipal Public Security Bureau, China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and Qihoo 360 created a task force to probe into the attack.

The task force gathered conclusive evidence that the NSA cyberattacks on the Northwestern Polytechnical University was directly orchestrated by 13 individuals in the US, found over 60 contracts and more than 170 digital documents signed by the NSA to create an environment for cyberattacks through shell companies. It also found that, to carry out cyberattacks on the Northwestern Polytechnic University, the NSA used more than 50 proxy servers in 17 countries, including Poland, Ukraine, Japan, South Korea and Sweden.

Pressure on Chinese Business

Mao also expressed concern about the US practice of using government power to put pressure on Chinese companies, which goes against the principles of market economy and international trade and economic rules.

"I’ve seen relevant reports. They mentioned that the US would use government power to cripple Chinese companies. This is quite concerning," Mao said during a briefing.

The spokeswoman also said that scientific and technological advances should benefit all of humanity, rather than be used as a means to limit or constrain the development of other countries.

"The US has been stretching the concept of national security to hamper China-US business ties and sci-tech exchanges. This is against the principle of market economy and international economic and trading rules. It undercuts global confidence in US business environment and will backfire on the US," the diplomat added.

Former aide to head Roscosmos faces high treason sentence - Russia

Moscow journalist and former aide to the head of the Roscosmos, Ivan Safronov, has been found guilty of high treason in a Moscow City Court on Monday.

The judicial board's statement read:

"To recognize Safronov Ivan Ivanovich guilty of committing a crime under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation," continuing with "To give Safronov a sentence of imprisonment for a term of 22 years to be served in a strict regime colony."
