The New York Times expects employees to start returning to the office three days a week starting this week — but more than 1,300 journalists are saying hell no, they won’t go.

It’s just the latest blow in the increasingly bitter contract dispute between the News Guild journalists union — which includes reporters and photographers, as well as some editors and business-side employees — and upper management, over wages.

As of Monday, 1,316 Times workers had signed a pledge not to return to the office. This includes 879 members of the News Guild, but also members of the Times Tech Guild and the union for Wirecutter, the paper’s product-recommendation spinoff.

“People are livid,” Tom Coffey told The Post. A 25-year veteran editor at NYT, he works on the news desk and serves on the union’s Contract Action Committee.

He added that being forced to return to the office during a period of high inflation means workers will have to spend more money on gas, mass transit, clothing and lunches, despite the lack of salary increase.

NYT video journalist Haley Willis tweeted today: “The @nytimes is giving employees branded lunch boxes this week as a return-to-office perk. We want respect and a fair contract instead — so I’m working from home this week along with 1,300 of my @NYTimesGuild and @NYTGuildTech colleagues, with support from @WirecutterUnion.”

One source said that the branded NYT lunch boxes did not have any sandwiches or other lunch food inside. “They were empty,” said one source. “And the lunch box had no handles.”

According to a Times spokesperson, there is not a set number of days mandated for working in the office and it is up to individual departments to determine what works for their teams — but added: “We continue to believe that a hybrid work environment best suits The New York Times at this moment.”

“It’s not a mandatory three day a week return to work, per se,” Coffey said, “but they really do ‘expect’ you to be back in the office three days a week.”

The negotiating committee offered a 4% pay hike in its last bargaining session on Aug. 24 — the first concrete pay proposal advanced by the company in the talks. The old contract expired at the end of March 2021.

Russia sent a message, a very clear message that they have been playing nice all along, and as soon as Russia sees fit, they can simply black out countries. Nice of Russia to not actually destroy anything serious to accomplish this, but it was still done and it represents a MAJOR escalation.

Now we have Russia cutting off gas and proving they can cut the power too. What if they expand that to all of Europe, stacked on top of a gas outage? The honey is a real product, I know they make it sound scary. "HONEY POT" but there's a veteran making it for real.

Honestly I have this crazy high end expensive Manuka honey +ACV here cause I had a heart attack. But I still use Honey Occasionally to sweeten my new reverse/ re-engineered receipes that don't kill me. For example if it says sugar, divide by 2 or more and swap with honey or bananna. boom done. Lot of family recipes tossed out, sugar flour etc. But Honey can be used in moderation, and it last for ever on the shelf. You reheat in the water to get a melt on again. MOON LANDING HOAX CONFESSION

One year to the day after the publication of the revelatory book "Moon Man: The True Story of a Filmmaker on the CIA Hit List", which divulges the deathbed confession of the former Chief of Security at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis New Mexico, who confessed thereon to his participation in the falsification of the first "moon landing", his identity is finally revealed. This predetermined waiting period was previously negotiated with his sole surviving son, who himself passed away this year.

Cyrus Eugene Akers detailed the information in the book, including not only the location of the filming of the first fake moon landing at his military base, the dates it was filmed, and the CIA codename for the operation, he also gave the names of fifteen government scientists and officials who were allowed exclusive observation of this historic government fraud, some of whom are still alive today. The list was given to Akers by President Lyndon Johnson, who was there at the first day of filming.

Threatened with execution if he ever revealed this information, Security Chief Akers kept all of this to himself until his deathbed, the guilt from which prompted his tearful confession to his son, who was also threatened with assassination after sharing this information with the author of Moon Man, Bart Sibrel.

This sad and outrageous, and really unnecessary deception, was done for pride and embezzlement. It demonstrates the complete arrogance of leaders over their people, who in fact are financing their own deception. Unlike government frauds about war, assassination, or terrorism, the moon landing deception cruelly gave the over-trusting public the pleasing candy that they cried out for. Trying to take it away from them, after they believed with tears and cheers, by exposing their heroes as the criminals they really are, faces fierce resistance. Even a professor at a major university has so famously said, "Even if I heard a moon astronaut confess that he never really went, I would still believe that he walked on the moon."

Fortunately a new generation is here, ones who were not emotionally branded by the deception, who are objective to the unfolding reality of the moon landings falsification. Simply put, what the corrupt government is claiming, is that in 1969 they went from never being in space, to walking on the moon, with only 8 years of research and development, and that with one-millionth the computing of a cell phone, and on the first attempt, when even the South Pole on Earth was not reached on the first attempt.

Today, with 50 years of more advanced rocket and computer technology, the current Artemis moon rocket took 18 years to develop, had three launch failures, is not safe enough yet to carry astronauts, and will only orbit the moon, because a moon lander for it has not yet been developed that works. The farthest that the government can send astronauts today, 50 years later, is to the space station, which is only one-thousandth the distance to the moon.

For the first time in the entire history of the world, technology was greater in the past than in the future. As this is actually impossible, it only means one thing, that the 1969 moon landing was a forgery. It is not the first time scientific boasts were falsified or governments have lied, as covid vaccine maker Prizer has been fined billions of dollars, on multiple occasions, for making fraudulent claims about their scientific products.

NEW: Huge US nurses’ strike begins, with 15,000 pausing work

The largest private sector nurses’ strike in US history kicked off Monday, organizers said, with some 15,000 workers in hospitals across Minnesota and Wisconsin demanding better working conditions and higher wages.

Strikes in the United States have occurred regularly over the past year, with employees reporting to be exhausted by working during the Covid-19 pandemic and struggling with price rises.

The three-day nurses’ stoppage was set to last until Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Minnesota Nurses Association which was coordinating the action.

Holding signs bearing messages such as “Patients Before Profits,” employees gathered in groups in the early morning hours to protest outside some of the 16 affected hospitals, according to photographs the union posted online.

Hospitals have planned to continue providing care, albeit with possible disruptions.

North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota said it “may be making some adjustments to non-emergency care and services to ensure adequate and safe staffing during the strike period.”

But it stressed it will continue to offer its “full range of services” including inpatient, outpatient and emergency care, and that it would serve customers for any previously scheduled appointments.

The two sides have been negotiating for more than five months, without reaching an agreement.

“Right now in Minnesota, nurses are overworked, hospitals are understaffed, and patients are overcharged,” MNA said in a statement.

The union said it was seeking solutions to staffing shortages and work safety issues, while hospitals want to focus solely on salaries.

A group representing the hospitals says it has proposed wage increases of 10-12 percent over three years. The nurses are seeking raises in the range of 27-30 percent.

The hospitals argue that “with the constant change in healthcare, all those who work in healthcare need to adapt to how we serve people.”

Aside from history of alleged abuses, tax agency struggles with customer service, data security and audit targeting.

The Internal Revenue Service has long been a political football. Democrats alleged that in the 1960s it was used by Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon to subvert civil rights and anti-Vietnam War activists, while Republicans alleged a decade ago it wrongly targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups.

More recently, Democrats have argued the tax agency needs $80 billion in new enforcement to end tax cheating and ease budget deficits, while Republicans say the new spending signed by President Joe Biden will only create an army of 87,000 armed agents intent on wreaking havoc on the middle and working classes.

With so much emotion, scandal and political rhetoric, it's sometimes hard for everyday Americans to sort fact from fiction. So the team here at Just the News did a deep dive to put together a list of facts about the IRS that aren't in dispute, from whom it audits to why it buys ammunition and arms its agents.

Here's what we found:

The IRS has disproportionately audited poorer Americans in recent years.

An analysis by Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) found that low-income wage earners with less than $25,000 in total earnings were audited at a rate five times higher than everyone else in fiscal year 2021. The reason? IRS has put an emphasis on auditing beneficiaries of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is used predominantly by poor and working-class families.

News site ProPublica found that based on 2017 tax return information, Earned Income Tax Credit recipients were audited at twice the rate of taxpayers with income between $200,000 and $500,000. Only millionaires had a higher audit rate, the news organization found.

The investigative arm of Congress confirmed such findings in a report this spring, saying audits disproportionately affected people making less than $200,000.

"From fiscal years 2010 to 2021, the majority of the additional taxes IRS recommended from audits came from taxpayers with incomes below $200,000," the Government Accountability Office reported.

"Audits of the lowest-income taxpayers, particularly those claiming the EITC, resulted in higher amounts of recommended additional tax per audit hour compared to all income groups except for the highest-income taxpayers," it added.

IRS auditing of wealthier Americans has been declining.

The GAO also reported in May that while audit rates have been falling in recent years in all income levels, they dropped the most for taxpayers with incomes of $200,000 or more. "Audit rates decreased more for higher-income taxpayers," GAO told Congress, blaming the complexity of finances and legal and accounting resources of wealthy Americans for the drop.

The most audited counties in America fall heavily in rural black and Hispanic counties in the South.

A 2019 study of IRS audits by geography found the five counties with the highest audit rates are all predominantly black, rural counties in the Deep South. Audit rates were also high in Hispanic counties in South Texas and in South Dakota counties with Native American reservations.

The most audited county, according to the study, was Humphreys County in Mississippi, where median income was $26,000 and more than half the taxpayers claim the earned income tax credit. The study found Humphreys is audited at a rate 51% higher than Loudoun County, Va., in the wealthy Washington D.C. suburbs, where the median annual income is $130,000.

Nonpartisan projections have found increased audits under the Biden plan will heavily impact middle- and working-class Americans.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has projected Democrats' proposed boost in IRS funding under the Inflation Reduction Act would increase tax collections by about $200 billion from 2023 to 2031. Last month, the bipartisan Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation estimated between 78% and 90% of that $200 billion will come from those making less than $200,000 a year. Only 4% to 9% is expected to come from those making more than $500,000, the committee said.

"This so-called Inflation Reduction Act, now called the climate bill, is going to raise taxes on middle class families, is going to hire up to 87,000 new IRS agents targeted mainly at what I would call value shoppers, the neighbors I see at Target and Walmart and Marshalls and Ross, where every penny really matters," Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, told Just the News on Monday.

"Americans from hardworking families who are already being crushed with inflation and fuel costs and who worry most about losing their job now are going to face tax hikes, and an army of IRS agents," he added.

Unlike most Americans, IRS employees have been working predominantly from home.

While the IRS workforce will markedly expand under the Democrat law, more than half the agency's employees were working from home as of April. And that trend began well before the pandemic and has only grown since.

"So, 53% of the employees are in a full-time telework capacity," IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told Congress in April. "The rest of the employees either have a blended capacity or they're site. Every employee who has interaction with respect to what the major issue, the inventory, the submission process, the accounts management, they came back in June 2020 socially distant environment."

In-person operations for all employees resumed June 25, but employees were still given the option to telework at least some of the time. IRS leadership didn't return to the office until April 24, and even then they were required to work in the office only once per pay period.

The October 2021 collective bargaining agreement between the National Treasury Employees Unions and the IRS further expanded the number of positions eligible for remote work, including the representatives for the agency's much criticized customer services.

The IRS telework program is far outside most Americans' experience. Just 7.7% of all American workers surveyed in April by the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported working remotely.

IRS customer service has been declining, and was rated "horrendous" by its own internal watchdog.

"There is no way to sugarcoat the year 2021 in tax administration: From the perspective of tens of millions of taxpayers, it was horrendous," Collin wrote in her annual Purple Book assessment as the agency's independent watchdog for taxpayers.

Collins laid bare the agency's many faults: individual and corporate returns faced long processing times, and refunds were massively delayed, taxpayers had a hard time reaching the IRS by phone, and their correspondence went unprocessed by the agency for "many months."

"The IRS is in crisis and needs to apply resources to its core mission — processing these returns and paying the corresponding refunds," the report added.

The IRS this summer reported 21.3 million taxpayer returns were backlogged, up more than 1 million from a year earlier. "Unfortunately, at this point the backlog is still crushing the IRS, its employees, and most importantly, taxpayers," Collins reported in June.

Democrats and Republicans agree the IRS is failing at its core mission, but the new Inflation Reduction Act spends little to address the core capabilities of the agency's customer service.

"I think they've got some awfully good workers there," Rep. Brady said. "But they need to be back to work. They need to be more productive."

IRS employees have egregiously leaked or failed to protect the privacy of taxpayers' data.

Earlier this month, the agency confirmed it improperly published online the private financial information of roughly 120,000 taxpayers. The improper disclosure of Form 990-Ts included names and contact information of the filers, as well as significant portions of their financial records, officials said. Worse yet, the leak wasn't discovered by the IRS but by an outside party.

Meanwhile, the agency has yet to punish anyone for a 2021 leak to the news site ProPublica of private tax information on some of America's wealthiest taxpayers, including Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett. The news site said the leaked IRS records were provided through "secure systems that allow whistleblowers to transmit information to us without revealing their identity."

Leaking federal tax information is a federal felony for any U.S. officials. But leaks have been widespread in recent years, with few prosecutions, according to a recent GAO report on illegal leaks.

That report found that the IRS completed 1,694 investigations into the "willful unauthorized access of tax data by employees" and 27% of the cases were deemed violations. But most of the violations resulted in the offending employee's suspension, resignation, or removal rather than prosecution. In fact, the IRS only closed 25 cases that had a criminal indictment returned against the employee being investigated.

Amid backlogs and leaks, IRS paid tax relief to dead taxpayer, prisoners on death row.

Moscow – The Russian journalist who staged his own death in a sting operation with Ukrainian authorities has described how he was smeared with pig’s blood and taken to a morgue as part of the spectacular effort that he said was necessary to thwart a Russian plot to kill him.

The reporter, Arkady Babchenko, revealed the details of the operation to reporters in Ukraine's capital, Kiev on Thursday, a day after Ukraine's SBU spy agency announced that Babchenko's apparent killing was in fact an elaborate ruse.

"I only stopped being afraid at the morgue," he said.

Speaking on Thursday, Babchenko described how the operation had involved staging every step of an actual assassination. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s police said that Babchenko had been shot dead in his apartment building, saying his wife had found him covered in blood with multiple gunshot wounds. She called an ambulance, and he was declared dead before reaching the hospital. A photograph appeared in Ukrainian social media showing Babchenko’s "corpse," lying in a pool of blood with three bullet-holes in his back, while police released a sketch of a supposed 'suspect'.

On Thursday Babchenko said that he and Ukraine’s police had simulated every step of that. First, he said a make-up artist arrived at his house and he began practicing falling down.

“It was all real. I made that shirt with bullet holes in it and I laid on the floor. They have poured blood over me, I took some of it in my mouth and let it out,” Babchenko said.

In response, UNICEF launched the http://www.poo2loo.com campaign with this insanely over-the-top, potty-mouthed animated music video by Studio Eeksaurus in Mumbai as the centerpiece. The absurdly catchy music was composed by Shrikanth Sriram (Shri) who composed the theme for "Life of Pi".

Nilma Eriyat, producer at Eeksaurus: "The main creative challenge was to figure out a way to make an unpleasant thing like poop be funny enough as a character that the audience wouldn't be repulsed while watching the video. At the same time we had to put forth the idea that open defecation is a filthy and unhealthy practice.

"Since the backgrounds are 2D images and the animated characters are 3D models, we had to find a way to design the film in such a way that all the elements looked well integrated. This took some research and trial and error.

"The film also has a lot of crowd animation. The sheer number of characters in some of the scenes was overwhelming, and we had to figure out ways to convincingly animate crowds within the six-week schedule.

"This music video is part of a huge campaign for 'Poo to the Loo', which is a UNICEF initiative to stop open defecation in India. Apart from this we also helped the agency JWT design the website http://www.poo2loo.com. Most of the illustrations and the films there have been created in house at Studio Eeksaurus.

"Our director E. Suresh came up with the idea of using 'Loo' sounds (sounds that you hear in the loo and are associated with the loo like flush, fart, mugs and buckets, water splash, etc.) for the music track. Bringing music director Shri on board helped translate all these sounds into a trippy, memorable track.

NEWS: Modernization of Armed Forces a Collaborative Effort, Official Says

The Defense Department, in collaboration with academia, industry, allies and partners, is developing cutting-edge technology to ensure the warfighter has the upper edge on the battlefield. 

Heidi Shyu, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, provided virtual opening remarks at the Inaugural Defense Department Basic Research Conference in Arlington, Virginia. 

The fiscal year 2022 National Defense Strategy sets out three main themes, she said. 

The first theme is integrated deterrence. Research and engineering, or R&E, is working to ensure that the joint force can operate seamlessly across all domains — air, land, sea, cyber and space — and in concert with allies and partners, she said. 

Spotlight: Engineering in the DOD

R&E is advancing several international partnerships, including with Australia, the United Kingdom, Israel and NATO, she said. 

"Our foreign comparative test program also promotes coalition interoperability and strengthens our shared defense industrial base. Our mission engineering division is using modeling and simulation to assess joint capability gaps, and how we're integrating critical enabling technologies into mission architectures," Shyu said. 

The second theme is campaigning. This relies upon R&E's efforts to work with partners across the interagency, including the Departments of Treasury and Commerce, the State Department and the Small Business Administration, she said.  

The Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve program has embarked on a continuous campaign of joint experimentation to close the gaps in joint warfighting capability, she said. These joint experiments are scenario-based and will be conducted in six-month cycles starting next year. 

This experimentation, she said, will involve 14 critical technology areas for the warfighter. The technology areas include biotechnology; quantum sciences; advanced materials; future G, which is beyond 5G technologies that also have a lot of commercial development, trusted artificial intelligence and autonomy; microelectronics; space technology; renewable energy; integrated network; systems of systems; advanced computing and software; human-machine interfaces; hypersonics; direct energy; and integrated sensing and cyber. 

The third theme is building enduring advantages, Shyu said. R&E is working to identify reforms to accelerate the development and acquisition of critical technologies and is making necessary investments to the workforce.  

"We're supporting the future defense innovation base through initiatives to support small businesses, startups and other nontraditional companies and encouraging them to work with the DOD," she said.  

R&E's mission has three focal points:  

First, the DOD is leveraging the United States' incredible science and technology innovation community to solve the department's toughest operational and engineering challenges with cross-cutting solutions that benefit all military services, she said. 

Second, R&E is setting the foundation today to attract and build a strong talented future technical workforce that will work in modernized laboratories and test facilities, she said.  

R&E-supported university affiliated research centers and federally funded research and development centers work on cutting-edge technologies including space dynamics, system engineering, applied physics, software engineering, and geophysical detection, she said.

"We're committed to fostering a culture that encourages innovation and risk taking. Our future depends on our STEM workforce, so we must invest in multiple talent pipelines for the defense innovation base," Shyu said. STEM refers to science, technology, engineering and math. 

Shyu mentioned that the department is also working with underrepresented talent in academia, including historically Black colleges and universities and other minority institutions. 

The third focal point is success through teamwork.  

"We're working collaboratively with partners across the technology ecosystem to strengthen our foundation. The work that's being done by our basic research office and by all of you is foundational for the continued technological dominance of the United States. Basic research is a core of what we do in research and engineering. And it's a core of every single system that we use. Collaboration is the key to creating new and novel ideas," Shyu said.

DENVER (KDVR) – An event being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday aims to get people ready to respond to emergencies as part of National Preparedness month.

The Denver Office of Emergency Management is hosting two events during September as part of a nationwide campaign that will provide free emergency “Bug Out Bags” to anyone in attendance.

Those events fall under the DenverREADY: Preparedness Program which is part of the National Preparedness Month movement, the theme of which is: Protecting your Legacy: The Life you’ve Built is Worth Protecting.

Sen. Lindsey Graham pitches nationwide abortion restrictions post-Roe overturn

Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a new bill Tuesday banning most “late-term” abortions nationwide — fewer than three months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and just two months out from the midterm elections, where the issue is likely to be front and center.

“I think we should have a law at the federal level that would say after 15 weeks, no abortion on demand — except in cases of rape, incest, [or] to save the life of the mother,” Graham said at a press conference unveiling the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act alongside anti-abortion leaders .

“That’s where we should be as Americans.”

Graham argued that at the 15-week point of a pregnancy, a baby has “well-developed” nerve endings allowing them to feel pain. Graham said that if a child was born prematurely at about 15 weeks, doctors could give them anesthetic in a bid to save their life.

“So here’s our point: if you have to provide anesthesia to keep the baby from feeling pain to help save its life, should we as a nation be aborting babies that can feel excruciating pain from an abortion?” he said.

Graham has repeatedly introduced bills banning abortion after the 20-week mark His most recent proposal, introduced in January 2021, failed to pass.

The House Oversight Committee asked the National Archives on Tuesday to determine whether former President Donald Trump needs to turn over additional documents following an Aug. 8 FBI raid on his Florida home to retrieve classified records.

The panel, led by outgoing Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), asked the Archives to make Trump certify in writing that he no longer has any records — which could open him to false-statements charges — and to vet whether there are more missing papers.

“In light of the serious risk that Mr. Trump may still be retaining sensitive government records at Mar-a-Lago or his other properties, I urge NARA to seek a personal certification from Donald Trump that he has surrendered all presidential records that he illegally removed from the White House after leaving office,” Maloney wrote to acting archivist Debra Wall.

“I also ask that the agency conduct an urgent review of presidential records recovered from the Trump White House to assess whether presidential records remain unaccounted for and potentially in the possession of the former president.”

Maloney added that Archives staff “recently informed the Committee that the agency is not certain whether all presidential records are in its custody.”

The FBI’s unprecedented raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach followed a dispute over the status of documents transferred from the White House in the chaotic final days of Trump’s presidency in January 2021.

According to the authorities, highly classified documents were retrieved during the raid. Trump asserts that he declassified those documents, but experts say that the ex-president still could be prosecuted for mishandling national defense information.

Trump says the raid is part of a long-running “witch hunt”against him that began with the FBI’s 2016 investigation into whether his campaign colluded with Russia. That investigation spanned more than half of his presidency and ended with a special counsel report that found no evidence of a conspiracy.

Trump’s legal team clashed with officials ahead of the raid on Mar-a-Lago and in June signed a document saying the ex-president’s team had completed a “diligent search” for secret records.

The FBI found “twice as many documents with classification markings (**so fucking what? Declas mofos)

as the ‘diligent search,'” prosecutors said in a court filing, “[which] calls into serious question the representations made in the June 3 certification and casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter.”

But Trump allies question whether the markings on documents were accurate — and the matter may never be settled in public.

The British government invited only President Biden and first lady Jill Biden to represent the United States at Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, the White House confirmed Monday.

The invite issued by Britain to its most powerful ally and top trading partner was confirmed by press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during a gaggle on Air Force One.

“The invitation [that] was extended to the US government was for the president and the first lady only,” Jean-Pierre said, confirming reports that Biden had been asked not to assemble a more high-powered American delegation due to space constraints.

“As far as invites, I would refer you to the United Kingdom, their government on that protocol generally,” Jean-Pierre said en route to Boston.

The press secretary declined to comment when a reporter asked if Biden would seek to bring along former US presidents if additional spots at the church became available.

“Again, this is a decision that is made for the UK government. They decide who gets invited,” she said. “Again, the invite was for the president and the first lady only. It is for them to move to decide on how they’re going to proceed with invites and they have.”

A former security officer at Twitter told senators on Tuesday that he learned a Chinese intelligence agent was on the social media company's payroll a week before he was dismissed.

It was just one of a string of vulnerabilities unveiled by Peiter 'Mudge' Zatko, a respected cybersecurity expert.

He was hired in November 2020 after a hack that compromised high-profile accounts but was fired barely a year later.

Such were the security failings, he said he was not surprised to learn that an agent of the Chinese Ministry of State Security was operating inside Twitter.

'I had been told because the corporate security physical security team had been contacted and told that there was at least one agent of the MSS, which is one of China's intelligence services, on the payroll inside Twitter,' he told a hearing of the Senate Judicial Committee.

'While it was disturbing to hear, I and many others, recognising the state of the environment at Twitter, were really thinking if you are not placing foreign agents inside Twitter - because it's very difficult to detect them … it is very valuable to a foreign agent to be inside there - as a foreign intelligence company, you're most likely not doing your job.'

His warnings echo similar criticisms of other social media giants, such as Facebook, that they are not doing enough to protect user data.

And he accused executives of ignoring engineers and their concerns, putting profits ahead of security.

When he raised the problem of a foreign agent, it got short shrift.

'I'm reminded of one conversation with an executive when I said, "I am confident that we have a foreign agent," and their response was, "Well, since we already have one, what does it matter if we have more? Let's keep growing the office," Zaitko said.

Too many Twitter staff had access to sensitive data, he continued, coupled with a culture of only reporting good news.

'They don't know what data they have, where it lives and where it came from and so, unsurprisingly, they can't protect it,' he said.

'It doesn't matter who has keys if there are no locks.'

Zatko filed a whistleblower complaint in July with Congress, the Justice Department, the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Among his most serious accusations is that Twitter violated the terms of a 2011 FTC settlement by falsely claiming that it had put stronger measures in place to protect the security and privacy of its users.

Senators focused on his claims that foreign agents had worked inside Twitter.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the committee, said the platform had a trove of information that would be useful for adversaries.

'Because of his disclosures, we've learned that personal data from Twitter users was potentially exposed to foreign intelligence agencies,' he said in his opening statement.

'For example, his disclosures indicate that India was able to place at least two suspected foreign assets within Twitter.

'His disclosures also note that the FBI notified Twitter of at least one Chinese agent in the company.'

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But the company has previously disputed Zatko's claims. It says he was fired for poor performance and that his complaint is 'riddled with inaccuracies.'

However, his evidence will almost certainly be used by Elon Musk as he battles to get out of his deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion.

Zatko accused the company of deception in its handling of automated 'spam bots' or fake accounts - one of Musk's key arguments.

Musk even tweeted a popcorn emoji, suggesting he was watching the live hearing.

And Sen. Lindsey Graham alluded to Musk's bid, asking: 'Would you buy Twitter given what you know?'

A nuclear-capable B-52 bomber is roaming the skies over Britain after emitting an emergency squawk.

The US Air Force jet, coded SPICY22, took off from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire earlier today before it began to circle in a constant loop after issuing an emergency Squawk 7700 code - thought to be because one of the bomber's engines has failed.

The jet is currently covering a path which takes in the northern end of Gloucester, Churchdown, Bishop's Cleeve, Newent, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham. It is understood that it is in a loop so that it can burn off fuel before it can land again, according to local reports.

B-52 bombers were deployed to Fairford this year in response to Putin's barbaric invasion of Ukraine.

They have regularly been used in training and reconnaissance missions over Europe alongside other NATO powers

Having returned to the US, the bombers made their way back to Fairford in August and remain based there.

Residents on the ground in Gloucester have described the 'very loud' rumble of the bomber as it flies over the city.

MailOnline has contacted the Ministry of Defence for further information.

Brand new F35s and U2 spy planes were also spotted arriving at the airfield earlier this year.

The latter can cruise at 70,000ft and are used for intelligence gathering. The former are based over at Lakenheath.

Anti-diarrhea medication may help treat core autism symptoms

Can you teach an old drug new tricks? Although drug treatments for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are not currently available, could an existing drug provide a new treatment, even if it previously had no association with ASD? This was the question asked by a new study in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology. The researchers used a computer model that encompasses proteins involved in ASD and the way they interact.

By looking at how different drugs affected proteins in the system, they identified potential candidates to treat it. A commonly used antidiarrheal drug called loperamide was the most promising candidate, and the researchers have an interesting hypothesis about how it may work to treat ASD symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms in ASD involve difficulties with social interaction and communication.

"There are no medications currently approved for the treatment of social communication deficits, the main symptom in ASD," said Dr. Elise Koch of the University of Oslo, lead author on the study. "However, most adults and about half of children and adolescents with ASD are treated with antipsychotic drugs, which have serious side effects or lack efficacy in ASD."

Repurposing drugs as new treatments

In an effort to find a new way to treat ASD, the researchers turned to drug repurposing, which involves exploring existing drugs as potential treatments for a different condition. The approach has plenty of benefits, as there is often extensive knowledge about existing drugs in terms of their safety, side-effects and the biological molecules that they interact with in the body.

To identify new treatments for ASD, the researchers used a computer-based protein interaction network. Such networks encompass proteins and the complex interactions between them. It is important to account for this complexity when studying biological systems, as affecting one protein can often have knock-on effects elsewhere.

The researchers constructed a protein interaction network that included proteins associated with ASD. By investigating existing drugs and their interaction with proteins in the network, the team identified several candidates that counteract biological process underlying ASD.

The most promising drug is called loperamide, which is commonly used for diarrhea. While it might seem strange that an anti-diarrheal drug could treat core ASD symptoms, the researchers have developed a hypothesis about how it may work.

From an upset gastrointestinal system to ASD

Loperamide binds to and activates a protein called the μ-opioid receptor, which is normally affected by opioid drugs, such as morphine. Along with the effects that you would normally expect from an opioid drug, such as pain relief, the μ-opioid receptor also affects social behavior.

In previous studies, genetically engineered mice that lack the μ-opioid receptor demonstrated social deficits similar to those seen in ASD. Interestingly, drugs that activate the μ-opioid receptor helped to restore social behaviors.

These results in mice highlight the tantalizing possibility that loperamide, or other drugs that target the μ-opioid receptor, may represent a new way to treat the social symptoms present in ASD, but further work is required to test this hypothesis. In any case, the current study demonstrates the power of assuming that old drugs may indeed learn new tricks.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy is tearing into President Joe Biden and Congressional Democrats on Tuesday for their 'radical and reckless spending sprees' which he says are to blame for August's steep 8.3 percent inflation spike.

The minority leader told DailyMail.com that his party has a plan to cut 'wasteful spending' should they win the House of Representatives in November - a likely outcome, according to multiple projections.

Inflation had been steadily rising throughout most of the year until hitting a 40-year high of 9.1 percent in June. It dropped off slightly to 8.5 percent in July, chiefly driven down by gas prices easing after a sharp spike over the summer. But August's 8.3 percent increase in consumer prices shows inflation is still running hot, while wages are failing to keep pace with rising costs.

'The cost of living is up 8.3 percent over last year, rose further this month despite Democrats' victory lap in July, and is up nearly 13 percent since January 2021. McCarthy told DailyMail.com. 'Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.'

He specifically targeted Biden's COVID-19 pandemic package known as the American Rescue Plan, which multiple economists have pointed to as helping drive inflation up.

'Real wages have fallen every month since Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus spending spree passed. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it,' McCarthy said.
