PGA Tour suspends all players in Saudi-backed LIV Golf league

 

The PGA Tour has reacted.

 

It has laid a hammer down on players competing in the Greg Norman-backed LIV Golf Series, which began its first event at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Within an hour of first balls being struck in the LIV event, being played outside of London, the Tour sent out the release detailing its bans. โ€œWe have followed the Tournament Regulations from start to finish in responding to those players who have decided to turn their backs on the PGA Tour by willfully violating a regulation,โ€ the release read. โ€œThe players are being notified that they are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA Tour tournament play, including the Presidents Cup. Sweeping internet outage hits Google, Fidelity, Amazon, major websites

A sweeping internet outage briefly took down several major websites on Thursday, including Google, Amazon, Fidelity, Costco, Delta Air Lines, British Airways, Capital One and Vanguard.

 

Many of the sites were loading slowly or showing โ€œDNS failureโ€ messages, but by 1 p.m. ET, most of the affected sites had restored service, according to DownDetector.

 

Akamai, a cloud computing company that operates a content delivery network service, which helps move data across the internet, said it was experiencing some problems that appeared to be responsible for the outages.

 

โ€œWe are aware of an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service,โ€ the company said in a statement. โ€œWe are actively investigating the issue

 

DNS stands for Domain Name System, which connects domain names to the right IP addresses so that people can access popular websites.

 

The Edge DNS service from Akamai services various apps and websites and keeps them secure from certain cyberattacks called distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks.

 

The company said at 12:47 p.m. ET that it โ€œimplemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations.โ€

 

โ€œWe are continuing to monitor the situation and can confirm this was not a result of a cyberattack on the Akamai platform,โ€ the company said on Twitter.

 

We have implemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.

In a statement, cloud service provider Oracle said it was โ€œmonitoring a global issue related to a partner Edge DNS provider,โ€ though it did not name Akamai. Oracle said resources within its own cloud service were not impacted by the incident.

 

โ€œResources within the Oracle cloud are continuing to run and are not impacted by this event,โ€ the company said.

 

โ€œCustomers may be unable to access their resources via the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console,โ€ it added.

 

Other affected sites, according to DownDetector, included Airbnb, Charles Schwab, The Home Depot, FedEx, HBO Max and many others.

 

Even the Tokyo Olympics website and app were reported to be briefly down, just hours before the Opening Ceremony. The Securities and Exchange Commissionโ€™s document search site was also briefly down.

 

Last month, a seemingly similar episode played out when Fastly, another cloud computing company that operates a content delivery network service, experienced a temporary outage that brought down a slew of major websites.

A โ€œrecord numberโ€ of LGBTQ candidates are running for Congress, โ€œmotivated in partโ€ by laws in GOP states shoring up parental rights and protecting women and girlsโ€™ sports, Axios Congressional reporter Sophia Cai reported Tuesday.

 

Approximately 104 LGBTQ candidates are running for House or Senate seats in the 2022 midterm elections โ€” a nearly 20 percent increase compared to 2020, when 87 LGBTQ candidates campaigned, Cai wrote.

 

โ€œSome of those campaigns have already ended, but as of last week, 57 candidates are still actively running, according to data,โ€ the report reads.

 

Cai wrote that candidates at the state level โ€œsay discriminatory laws have motivated them to seek a seat in their legislatures.โ€ These supposed โ€œdiscriminatory laws,โ€ however, are put forth by Republicans to keep radical gender ideology from infiltrating schools and creating a divide between parents and their children.

 

A prime example is Floridaโ€™s Parental Rights in Education Act, which expands parentsโ€™ oversight of their childrenโ€™s education and prohibits the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation from kindergarten through third grade. U.S. Army Rangers on Wednesday arrested former Biden campaign manager and current Deputy Chief of Staff Jennifer Brigid Oโ€™Malley Dillon at a Washington, D.C. hotel, the response to a military investigation into whether she took part in a 2020 ballot harvesting ring in which Democrat-liberal sympathizers, known as โ€œmules,โ€ illegally collected and deposited ballots into drop boxes in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin during the 2020 presidential election.

 

According to a JAG source, White Hats took interest in Dillon after viewing conservative author Dinesh Dโ€™Souzaโ€™s video 2000 Mules, which showed surveillance video of seedy individuals making repeated trips to drop boxes in the aforementioned states; in each instance they carried in their arms reams of ballots.

 

The video, our source said, sounded alarm bells in the White Hat community, and prompted a thorough probe.

 

Although Dillon goes unmentioned in Dโ€™Souzaโ€™s video, the military began its investigation at the crest of Bidenโ€™s election hierarchy, believing that she, who became Bidenโ€™s campaign manager in April 2020, had knowledge of the schemeโ€”or orchestrated it. Our source would not at this time cite specific evidence, but said JAG had obtained from U.S. Army Cyber Command โ€œconcrete proofโ€ linking her to โ€œinnumerableโ€ illegal ballots.

 

โ€œThe case against Dillon is open and shut,โ€ he said.

 

The charge on a military arrest warrant was suspicion of treason, which, if proven, can carry a death sentence.

 

However, itโ€™s still unclear whether JAG will prosecute Dillon or strike a deal in hopes she will lead them to bigger fish.

Poll: 25% of Americans willing to take up arms against US government

 

A poll released on Thursday revealed a deteriorating situation on the social grounds of the US: More than 25% of US residents feel so alienated by their government, that they believe it may be โ€œsoon be necessary to take up armsโ€ against it.

 

Around 1,000 registered US voters participated in the survey, which was published by the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics. The survey, furthermore, revealed that most US citizens agree that the US government is "corrupt and rigged against everyday people like me."

 

As the data suggests, extreme polarization in US politics, which has impacted social relationships, is higher than ever at the moment.

 

The statistics obtained come at the same time when hearings for the attack on the US Capitol are broadcasted on television - the attack is based on divisive premises that Biden did not win the 2020 election, and that Trump is the US' legitimate president. Rioters violently stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election results.

 

Although the rioters attacked both Democrats and Republicans, Trump loyalists have insisted that the committee investigating the January 6 events is illegitimate.

 

Furthermore, the survey indicates that there is an increasing distrust in the US government, and that distrust varies from party to party. For instance, 56% of participants said that in general, they trust elections to be conducted fairly and counted accurately, while Republicans, Democrats and independents carry different convictions regarding this point.

 

The vast divide can be directly linked to the January 6 riots: While Democrats have plenty of trust in the aforementioned item (80%), only 33% of Republicans exhibited trust. In the middle comes the independents, 51% of which showed trust in the US government.

 

According to the poll, 49% of Americans said they feel โ€œmore and more feel like a stranger in my own countryโ€ - a display of a sharp wedge in American unity, which is backed by how the participants identified themselves: 69% of the participants identified as "strong Republicans," 65% described themselves to be "very conservative" persons, and 38% "strong Democrats."

 

Of the 28% of voters who said that they may soon need to take up arms against their government, 37% said they had guns in their homes. A third of Republicans, which also includes 45% of "strong Republicans" held the belief of taking up arms. But, that is not all: 35% of independent voters and 20% of Democrats agreed, too.

 

Now, when it came to in-group-out-group tensions and aggression, 73% of Republicans agreed that โ€œDemocrats are generally bullies who want to impose their political beliefs on those who disagree,โ€ and โ€œan almost identical percentage of Democrats (74%) express that view of Republicansโ€.

 

"These poll results are perhaps the starkest evidence of the deep divisions in partisan attitudes rippling through the country,โ€ said Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster who conducted the survey in May.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania's Republican nominee for governor, Doug Mastriano, has offered to sit for an interview with the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and was interviewed by FBI agents last year about it, his lawyer said Thursday.

 

Mastriano, a state senator and retired U.S. Army colonel who won the GOP nomination for governor last month, was seen outside the Capitol on the day of the insurrection, and he was in regular communication with Donald Trump as the then-president sought to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

 

Mastriano's lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, said Mastriano told the FBI that he did not know about a planned insurrection or any coordination behind the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

 

"He previously was approached and sat for a voluntary interview with the FBI and told them the truth about everything that happened that day," Parlatore said. "The FBI cleared him."

 

Parlatore said he also provided documents earlier this week to the Jan. 6 committee in response to a Feb. 15 subpoena to Mastriano. Parlatore made the offer of an interview months ago, he said. The committee has yet to schedule an interview with Mastriano, and he has nothing to hide, Parlatore said

 

The submission of documents from Mastriano comes as lawmakers are looking to gather as much testimony and evidence as they can before beginning a series of public hearings next week. The committee has interviewed more than 1,000 witnesses and collected tens of thousands of pages of documents as it looks to give the American public the most comprehensive look at the events that led to the worst attack on the Capitol in two centuries.

 

A Senate Judiciary report released late last year alleged that Mastriano and his wife "took part in the January 6 insurrection," citing footage of them passing through breached barricades and police lines at the Capitol. Mastriano has told reporters that he left when things turned violent.

 

Mastriano previously denied breaking any laws that day, and he has not been charged with any crime in connection to the Capitol attack.

 

There is no evidence that Mastriano entered the Capitol building or that he participated in the violence. He has declined repeated efforts by The Associated Press over the past year to interview him about what he did and saw that day. He has called the violence "unacceptable."

 

Mastriano was among Trump's most dedicated supporters during the 2020 campaign and has been a prominent peddler of unsubstantiated claims that the election was stolen from Trump. He floated a plan in the Republican-controlled state Legislature to undo Biden's victory in Pennsylvania and empower lawmakers to instead award the state's electoral votes to Trump.

 

Mastriano later organized bus trips to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and advertised himself ahead of time as a scheduled speaker on the Capitol steps during the afternoon. He has described getting prime seats to Trump's speech before the riot. Trump also endorsed Mastriano for governor.

 

In its subpoena, the Jan. 6 committee also noted Mastriano's presence outside the Capitol the day of the insurrection, saying his public statements indicated "you witnessed 'agitators โ€ฆ getting in the face of the police' and 'agitators โ€ฆ start pushing the police up the Capitol steps.'"

 

Parlatore on Thursday dismissed the committee's work as "not a real investigation" and politically motivated, designed to boost Democrats' prospects in November's midterm elections. The panel is made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans.

 

Congressional investigators are hoping to learn more about Mastriano's role in a plan to arrange for an "alternate" slate of electors from Pennsylvania for Trump after the 2020 election. Those individuals went on to declare themselves the rightful electors and submitted false Electoral College certificates declaring Trump the winner of the presidential election in the state.

 

Those certificates from the "alternate electors" were then sent to Congress, where several of Trump's Republican allies in the House and the Senate used them to justify delaying or blocking the certification of the election during the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress. The committee will dedicate a portion of its public hearings to the fake electors scheme and the individuals who helped it come to life.

If you donโ€™t like a person, you should be able to block them: simply push a button, and have them disappear forever.

 

In 2011, a meta-analysis found that among young people the capacity for empathy (defined as Empathic Concern, โ€œother-oriented feelings of sympathy,โ€ and Perspective-Taking, the ability to โ€œimagine other peopleโ€™s points of viewโ€) had massively declined since the turn of the millennium. The authors directly associate this with the spread of social media. In the decade since, itโ€™s probably vanished even faster, even though everyone on the internet keeps talking about empathy. We are becoming less and less capable of actual intersubjective communication; more unhappy; more alone. Every year, surveys find that people have fewer and fewer friends; among millennials, 22% say they have none at all. For the first time in history, we can simply do without each other entirely. The machine supplies an approximation of everything you need for a bare biological existence: strangers come to deliver your food; AI chatbots deliver cognitive-behavioral therapy; social media simulates people to love and people to hate; and hidden inside the microcircuitry, the demons swarm.

 

I donโ€™t think this internet of demons is only a metaphor, or a rhetorical trick. Go back to those sigils, the patterns of weird loopy goetic lines that signify the presence of demons in online memes. โ€œThe prosecutorsโ€™ narrative has more holes than Swiss cheese, but it [the video] does directly refute their claim,โ€ said Jonathon Moseley, who previously represented Florida Oath Keepers leader Kelly Meggs.

In the middle of the afternoon on Jan. 6, Lt. Johnson appeared on a terrace area near the bottom of the east stairs at the U.S. Capitol. He approached a group of Oath Keepers for help.

Some people in the crowd expressed support for the trio. โ€œIโ€™m with you brother,โ€ one said. โ€œThank you, sir!โ€ replied another.

โ€œWeโ€™re Oath Keepers,โ€ the second Oath Keepers member said. He has not been identified.

โ€œStand aside, make a hole. Weโ€™re Oath Keepers, stand aside!โ€ he said as the group reached the historic Columbus Doors.

 

Two other groups of Oath Keepers that used the same stack formation to navigate the dense crowds and enter the Capitol were accused by prosecutors of using this military tactic as part of their alleged plan to attack the building and stop the certification of Electoral College votes.

They worked their way through a tightly packed crowd of protesters inside the Columbus Doors and through the interior double doors.

A short time later, Michael appeared at the doors with a megaphone. He advised the crowdโ€”along with some angry agitators near the doorsโ€” to back up and let them through.

 

As Capitol Police started to exit the Columbus Doors, they received pats on the back, hugs, and comments such as, โ€œThank you, sir!โ€ and โ€œGood job!โ€

On June 14, Pentagon policy chief, Colin Kahl, stated that Ukrainian forces have nearly completed training on High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) delivered by the United States and the United Kingdom.

 

In response to that statement, Moscow sent a formal diplomatic note to the United States warning that Washington and Brussels' arms shipments were adding fuel to the fire of the war in Ukraine, stressing that this matter could bring upon "unpredictable consequences".

 

Earlier in the month, the Head of the Russian Delegation to the Negotiations on Military Security and Arms Control in Vienna, Konstantin Gavrilov, told the Rossiya-24 TV channel Thursday that Russia will respond immediately in the event that it is attacked with long-range weapon systems.

 

"We particularly put the spotlight on the delivery [to Ukraine] of long-range howitzers and HIMARS MLRS that threaten not only Donbass but Russia as well. We have clearly laid out Russiaโ€™s stance: if the Russian Federation is attacked with these long-range systems, the response against the decision-making centers will be immediate," he said, adding, "I think, this is happening not without the involvement of Ukraineโ€™s military and political leadership. I am not ruling out anything anymore," Gavrilov stressed.

Ghislaine Maxwell will learn her fate Tuesday when a US judge sentences the former socialite for helping late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse girls.

 

Maxwell, 60, faces receiving an effective life term in prison when judge Alison Nathan hands down her sentence in Manhattanโ€™s federal court.

 

The Oxford-educated daughter of the late British press baron Robert Maxwell was convicted late last year on five of six counts, the most serious for sex trafficking minors.

 

Her lawyers have argued for leniency, citing a traumatic childhood and claiming that Maxwell is being unfairly punished because Epstein escaped trial.

 

They called for Nathan to hand down a sentence less than the US probation officeโ€™s recommended 20 years.

 

Prosecutors have asked that Maxwell receive between 30 and 55 years in jail, arguing that she has shown an โ€œutter lack of remorseโ€ for her crimes, committed between 1994 and 2004.

 

Maxwellโ€™s attorney Bobbi Sternheim wrote in a letter Saturday to Nathan that her client had been placed on suicide watch โ€” despite not being suicidal โ€” and that her lawyers would look to postpone her sentencing if she remained in solitary confinement.

 

During her high-profile trial late 2021, the prosecutors successfully proved that Maxwell was โ€œthe keyโ€ to Epsteinโ€™s scheme of enticing young girls to give him massages, during which he would sexually abuse them.

 

Two of Epsteinโ€™s victims, identified as โ€œJaneโ€ and โ€œCarolyn,โ€ testified that they were as young as 14 when Maxwell began grooming them.

 

Maxwellโ€™s lawyers say their client had โ€œa difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father.โ€

 

โ€œIt made her vulnerable to Epstein, whom she met right after her fatherโ€™s death,โ€ they wrote in submissions filed earlier this month.

 

Money manager Epstein killed himself in prison 2019 aged 66 while awaiting his own sex crimes trial in New York.

 

โ€œMs. Maxwell cannot and should not bear all the punishment for which Epstein should have been held responsible,โ€ her attorneys pleaded.

The prosecution contended in its own court filing last week that Maxwell โ€œwas an adult who made her own choices.โ€

Maxwell has already been held in detention for some two years following her arrest in New Hampshire in the summer of 2020.

Pentagon investigates suspected โ€˜insiderโ€™ attack

 

A member of the US military might have set off a Syria base blast

 

Two military law enforcement agencies are investigating a service member over the April incident at Green Village, a US outpost in northern Syria, the Pentagon acknowledged on Monday. The explosions, initially thought to be an artillery attack, were set off by someone inside the base. Four troops were injured.

 

The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) are โ€œconducting a joint investigation of the incident. A possible suspect, a US service member, has been identified,โ€ CID spokesman Patrick Barnes said in a statement. โ€œNo further information will be released at this time.โ€

 

The suspect has returned to the US, but his or her name has not been released, according to AP. No charges have been filed yet.

 

US bases in Syria and Iraq have repeatedly come under attack by mortars and rockets over the past several years, which the Pentagon has blamed on โ€œpro-Iranianโ€ Shia militias. Initial reports by the Combined Joint Task Force Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) attributed the April 7 incident in Green Village to โ€œtwo rounds of indirect fireโ€ fired from the outside.

 

A week later, however, the US Central Command said that after a further investigation, they believed it was โ€œdeliberate placement of explosive charges by an unidentified individual(s) at an ammunition holding area and shower facility.โ€

 

Security footage from the base showed โ€œa figure moving quicklyโ€ through Green Village at the time of the attack, which happened during the night, according to CNN. Four soldiers were treated for โ€œtraumatic brain injuriesโ€ and returned to duty by the end of April.

 

Originally established to coordinate the US-led coalition against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in Syria and Iraq, the CJTF-OIR is now in charge of around 900 US troops in eastern Syria. In the country without a legal mandate, they are tasked with supporting the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the US-backed militia that controls areas east of the Euphrates and is refusing reunification with the government in Damascus.
