Trade Deficit increased to $73.3 Billion in September

The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis announced today that the goods and services deficit was $73.3 billion in September, up $7.6 billion from $65.7 billion in August, revised. September exports were $258.0 billion, $2.8 billion less than August exports. September imports were $331.3 billion, $4.8 billion more than August imports.

Exports decreased and imports increased in September. Exports are up 22% year-over-year; imports are up 14% year-over-year. Both imports and exports decreased sharply due to COVID-19 and have now bounced back. The blue line is the total deficit, and the black line is the petroleum deficit, and the red line is the trade deficit ex-petroleum products. Note that net, exports of petroleum products are slightly positive. The trade deficit with China increased to $37.3 billion in September, from $36.4 billion a year ago. The trade deficit was slightly higher than the consensus forecast.

Immigration officials confirm that Paul Pelosi attacker is Canadian illegal immigrant

Immigration officials have confirmed that the attacker of Paul Pelosi is an illegal immigrant and faces possible deportation after federal and state criminal cases are resolved.

The Department of Homeland Security told the Washington Post in an emailed statement on Wednesday that David DePape, 42, is an illegal immigrant from Canada.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer on Canadian national David DePape with San Francisco County Jail, Nov. 1, following his Oct. 28 arrest,” DHS officials said in the email.

Detainers are sent to local and state law enforcement by ICE, which is under DHS, asking them to notify the agency when they plan on releasing someone who could be deported. This is a civil proceeding, which usually takes place after criminal cases are resolved, but immigrants can be detained after posting bail, per the Washington Post.

Federal records indicated that DePape crossed the Mexico border legally into the United States in March 2008. DHS said he was admitted as a temporary visitor traveling for pleasure, which usually allows a person to stay for six months. The department did not say when the temporary visitor permission to stay expired.

The Canadian government confirmed to the Washington Post that it is engaging with local authorities on the investigation.

DePape is facing both federal and state charges for his attack on Pelosi, husband to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). He is charged with a slew of state felony charges, including attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official. He pleaded not guilty in his court appearance on Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors also charged DePape with one count of attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official and one count of assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official.

On Oct. 28, DePape broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and planned to tie up Pelosi while asking, "Where is Nancy?" according to court documents. DePape told police he planned on waiting for Nancy to come home so he could "break her kneecaps" if she didn't tell him the truth.

DePape and Pelosi were struggling over a hammer when police arrived. DePape managed to hit Pelosi on the head, and he later received treatment at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for a "skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands," according to a spokesperson for the speaker.

"Paul is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process," Nancy Pelosi said on Monday.

RI man charged in ‘disturbance’ after approaching NH Senate candidate Don Bolduc before a debate

New Hampshire’s Republican candidate for US Senate Don Bolduc was the target of a physical altercation prior to Wednesday’s debate against Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan, his campaign says.

On Thursday, the Goffstown Police Department said a man from Rhode Island is now facing charges as a result of the ‘disturbance.”

Police identified the man as 37-year-old Joseph Hart of Greenville, RI. The arrest preceded a debate at St. Anselm College for the US Senate race featuring Bolduc and Hassan.

“Prior to that debate, dozens of supporters were on hand for both candidates, said police in a statement. “During that time, St. Anselm College instructed a male party that they were no longer welcome on their property.”

“A short time later, a disturbance occurred when Mr. Hart approached Mr. Bolduc who was greeting his supporters,” according to Goffstown Police. “Officers converged on the area and all parties were separated. Following that disturbance, Mr. Hart was taken into custody by the Goffstown Police Department and charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.”

Hart was released on personal recognizance bail and will be arraigned on December 1 at the Goffstown District Court.

“This incident is under investigation,” said Goffstown police.

Bolduc’s campaign released a statement on Wednesday about the incident and alleged that a man tried to hit Bolduc.

“As the General said on stage tonight, it’s time to lower the temperature of the political discourse in this country. Prior to the debate, an individual in the crowd gathered outside attempted to punch the General and was quickly apprehended and arrested. We are grateful to the quick response from law enforcement on the scene,” said a Bolduc campaign manager.

On Wednesday night, a spokesperson for the Hassan campaign blamed the incident on supporters of the Libertarian Party.

“Disgusting behavior,” said Kevin Donohoe from the Hassan campaign in a post to social media. "We saw this same libertarian party activist get aggressive with our campaign volunteers at this debate and the last.”

Wednesday’s debate between Bolduc and Hassan was the third and final debate prior to next Tuesday’s election.

United pilots reject contract offer as they push for raises

CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines pilots have overwhelmingly rejected a tentative contract, the latest move showing the resolve by airline unions to push for significant pay raises.

The deal would have given pilots raises of nearly 15% over 18 months, according to the union.

The Air Line Pilots Association said Tuesday that 94% of the nearly 10,000 United pilots who took part voted against a tentative agreement that the union and United reached in June.

The union accused United of refusing to respond to its latest proposal on wages. The union said it is determined to win an industry-leading contract “that fully recognizes our contributions to the success of our airline.”

A spokesman for Chicago-based United said the outcome of the vote was expected after the airline and the union identified issues with the June proposal. He said the the two sides are working on a new industry-leading agreement that is expected to include better pay rates and other improvements.

The vote was announced one day after pilots at Delta approved a symbolic strike-authorization vote to protest the lack of a new contract. Federal law makes it difficult for airline unions to conduct legal strikes.

The UN Security Council has overwhelmingly rejected Russia’s attempt to establish a commission to investigate its unfounded claims that Ukraine and the United States are carrying out “military biological” activities that violate the convention prohibiting the use of biological weapons.

Russia got support only from China in the vote, with the US, Britain and France opposing the Russian resolution and the 10 other council nations abstaining.

The 2-3-10 vote reflected the council’s continuing opposition and scepticism about Russia’s actions since its February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Russia had circulated a 310-page document to council members last week alleging that this biological activity is taking place in Ukraine with support from the US Defence Department.

The document included an official complaint to the Security Council, allowed under Article VI of the 1972 biological weapons convention, and a draft resolution that would authorise the Security Council to set up a commission comprising the 15 council members to investigate Russia’s claims.

Russia’s initial allegation of secret American biological warfare labs in Ukraine, made soon after its invasion of its smaller neighbour, has been disputed by independent scientists, Ukrainian leaders and officials at the White House and Pentagon.

Ukraine does have a network of biological labs that have funding and research support from the US. They are owned and operated by Ukraine and are part of an initiative called the Biological Threat Reduction Programme that aims to reduce the likelihood of deadly outbreaks, whether natural or manmade.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused the US of conducting work in Ukraine with deadly pathogens — including cholera, plague, anthrax and influenza — that could not be justified under the guise of public health. He said documents and evidence recovered by Russian authorities suggested a military application.

Pfizer is testing a new vaccine that inoculates against Covid and flu amid sluggish uptake of both shots.

The first patient was given the two-in-one vaccine this week as clinical trials got underway. In total 180 patients will be recruited for the study.

Pfizer's new shot targets the Omicron variant and its offshoots as well as four strains of influenza.

Rival vaccine-maker Moderna is also testing a vaccine targeting Covid and flu, as well a triple-shot that also immunizes against RSV.

None are expected to be ready for this year's flu season, which is already the worst in over a decade, piling pressure on hospitals.

Uptake of the updated bivalent booster vaccine is lagging in the US, with just a handful of Americans who are eligible coming forward.

Pfizer revealed that the first patient was injected in its Phase 1 trials this week.

These tests are to ensure the vaccine is safe and effective and to work out the best dose.

But the new vaccine will need to go through more tests before it can be rolled out nationwide.

The trial will recruit 180 people in the US who are between 18 and 64 years old, who will be followed for six months and compared to a control group who did not get the shot.

All participants are required to have received at least three doses of the Pfizer Covid vaccine, or a primary series plus a booster.

A Pfizer spokesperson said there were no plans to develop this vaccine to replace the standard two-dose Covid jab.

Annaliesa Anderson, chief scientific officer in vaccine research and development at Pfizer, said mRNA technology was 'well suited' to tackling other viruses.

'Pfizer is deeply proud of our continued work to explore its potential to protect against influenza and Covid in one combination vaccine,' she said.

'We think [this] could simplify immunisation practices against these two respiratory pathogens, potentially leading to better vaccine uptake for both diseases.

'Even with existing seasonal influenza vaccines, the burden of this virus is severe across the world causing thousands of deaths and hospitalisations every year.'

Currently the flu vaccine is rolled out every year to shore up immunity against the virus among those who are more vulnerable.

But scientists expect the Covid shot will also be needed annually, spurring efforts to combine them to avoid the need for two vaccines.

This autumn the US Government began rolling out an updated bivalent booster vaccine, that targets Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5.

But uptake has been slow with just 22million of the 226million eligible — or 10 per cent — having come forward more than a month into the roll out.

Medics have blamed a general sense of the Covid pandemic being over for the low uptake.

Vaccinations with the flu shot are also lagging with 128million shots distributed so far this year, compared to 156million at this time during the first winter of the pandemic, a drop of 18 per cent.

Pfizer shot to the second most profitable pharmaceutical company in the world last year buoyed by the success of its Covid vaccines — making $21.98billion.

Yesterday it revealed its experimental RSV vaccine was highly effective, reducing the risk of hospitalization in infants by 80 per cent.

On its radio broadcast Thursday morning, NPR played audio of a woman undergoing an abortion, complete with disturbing sounds of machinery vacuuming out the unborn child and the mother crying and moaning. The Michigan woman, whose identity was not revealed, received the procedure at eleven-weeks gestation, the outlet reported. In the audio, a vacuum can be heard suctioning out the unborn child, as well as the woman’s cries and moans. Tiger Global Halts New Chinese Equities Investments

Longtime China investor Tiger Global Management has hit pause on investing in Chinese equities, said people familiar with the matter, as the firm reassesses its exposure to the world’s second-largest economy after President Xi Jinping cemented his control over the country. Tiger executives, including founder Charles “Chase” Coleman, have told others that Mr. Xi’s reelection and his stacking of the Communist Party’s leadership with loyalists at the recent party Congress could increase geopolitical tensions and means the country’s Zero-Covid policy will likely continue, the people said.

China’s determination to stamp out Covid-19 outbreaks with lockdowns and other restrictions has been a major drag on its economic growth. Concerns about what Beijing might attempt to do with Taiwan, a democratically self-ruled island, also increased after the Chinese Communist Party recently amended its charter to include the phrase “firmly oppose Taiwan independence” and elevated a military commander familiar with Taiwan. Tiger had been shrinking its exposure to Chinese equities, concentrating on a smaller set of companies it knew well and believed in, said people familiar with the move. High valuations in early 2021 also played a role, one of the people said. Tiger further shrank its hedge fund’s China exposure to the mid-single digits heading into the congress, some of the people said, avoiding some of the carnage that hit Chinese equities as a result of it. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong fell 6.4% on Oct. 24, the biggest one-day decline since the 2008 global financial crisis. Chinese companies’ American depositary receipts plunged, with the five biggest U.S.-listed Chinese companies as of Oct. 21 losing $52.17 billion in market value in one day. Tiger refrained from buying into the steep selloff, with executives telling clients they are spending more time on opportunities in India and the South Pacific. Investors have been scaling back their China exposure as a series of regulatory crackdowns on internet-platform companies and for-profit education businesses inflicted heavy losses on many funds and highlighted the perils of investing in an authoritarian state. But the recent congress has caused even longtime China bulls to rethink their exposure.

World leaders congratulate Benjamin Netanyahu on return to power in Israel

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu for his election win and return to power as Israel's Prime Minister Thursday. Nides tweeted, "I congratulated him on his victory and told him I look forward to working together to maintain the unbreakable bond." Netanyahu, still on trial over corruption charges, will lead a far-right government after Prime Minister Yair Lapid conceded the election to Netanyahu Thursday. Hungary's right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban was the first to congratulate Netanyahu, tweeting that "Hard times require strong leaders. Welcome back!" Netanyahu will lead one of the most right-wing governments in Israeli history. And that could mean fundamental changes in Israeli society.

Some Netanyahu allies have talked, for example, about changing the judicial system raising questions as Netanyahu faces a criminal trial.

According to the New York Times, Netanyahu's far-right allies would like to weaken and overhaul the judicial system giving politicians more control over appointing judges. They also want to loosen Israeli Supreme Court oversight of Parliament.
