Coinbase Hits Record Low as Crypto Contagion Anxiety Intensifies

Coinbase Global Inc. shares hit an all-time low amid rising investor skittishness over how far the fallout from rival exchange FTX’s insolvency might spread.

The largest US cryptocurrency exchange’s stock dropped as much as 10.3% to $40.61 before closing down 9% on Monday, leading other crypto-related shares lower. Year-to-date, Coinbase’s shares have plunged more than 80%, while cryptocurrency bellwether Bitcoin is down 65%. Coinbase shares reached a high of $429.54 in April 2021 after making their debut on the Nasdaq. The drop aligns with a downturn in digital asset prices, which have fallen after the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire. Bitcoin dropped as much as 4.1% to $15,589 on Monday, just short of a two-year low hit on Nov. 9. The token has tumbled around 75% from a record high of almost $69,000 reached about a year ago. Also on Monday, Ether dropped as much as 5.5%. Shares of Marathon Digital Holdings Inc, MicroStrategy Inc., Riot Blockchain Inc. and Core Scientific Inc. all respectively dropped by as much as 10% as well. Coinbase has 14 buy, 12 hold, and 6 sell ratings. On Friday, Bank of America downgraded Coinbase to neutral from buy. 'Airlines Move To Have One Pilot, Not Two, In Cost-Cutting Solution

In a move to save costs and ease staff shortages, many countries are asking the UN body that controls global aviation safety rules, to move to a one-pilot model in commercial flights, instead of two.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency believes this might happen as soon as 2027, but it raises issues of safety and places more stress on pilots. Tony Lucas, an Airbus SE A330 captain for Qantas Airways and president of the Australian & International Pilots Association, told Bloomberg that lone pilots could be quickly overwhelmed in emergency situations and it might take backup too long to arrive in the cockpit. “When things go awry, they go awry fairly quickly," said Lucas, who added that the people pushing for this move are not the same ones who fly these jets every day. An additional issue is that there are fewer opportunities for junior crew members to learn from experienced pilots if everyone flies alone. The EUSA is running a safety risk assessment on single-pilot operations, to find out what rules would need to be in place to manage issues such as fatigue and comfort breaks. A statement by the EASA in January 2021 stated that there would also need to be advanced autonomous systems in place to fly the aircraft unmanned should the crew become incapacitated. In one sense, this is just a logical conclusion to the increasing automation that has been happening in the aviation industry for decades. In the 1950s, there would have been a captain, a co-pilot, a flight engineer, a navigator and a radio operator all in the cockpit. (and yes there has been huge leaps in technology that has allowed for many functions to be automated but ONE pilot?….GTFO) Over 40 countries have asked to change regulations, including Germany and the U.K. and the stipulation by the EU has been that a single-pilot cockpit is as safe as one with two pilots.

On of the biggest obstacles though is not whether it is possible to fly with one pilot safely, but more if customers would be willing to accept the idea.

Crypto Lender Genesis Asks Binance and Apollo for Cash

Cryptocurrency firm Genesis is still trying to raise cash.

The lender has approached crypto exchange Binance for an investment and to bid for its loan book, according to people familiar with the matter. Binance decided not to invest, fearful that some of Genesis’s business could create a conflict of interest down the line, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. The company also approached private equity giant Apollo Global Management APO for capital assistance, according to people familiar with the matter. “We have no plans to file bankruptcy imminently. Our goal is to resolve the current situation consensually without the need for any bankruptcy filing. Genesis continues to have constructive conversations with creditors,” a Genesis spokesman said. Genesis has faced a rush of withdrawals from its lending arm following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. The company initially sought an emergency loan of $1 billion from investors before it told clients it was suspending redemptions and loan originations in a brief call Nov. 16, Genesis said. At that meeting, Interim Chief Executive Derar Islim said Genesis would deliver a plan for its lending business this week.

Genesis’s outreach to Binance was first reported by Bloomberg. Genesis became the latest crypto lender to pause withdrawals last week after the swift and sudden collapse of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire. The Wall Street Journal has previously reported that Genesis had loans outstanding to Alameda Research, an affiliated trading firm of FTX that Mr. Bankman-Fried founded, with FTX’s own cryptocurrency used as collateral. Earlier this year, Genesis lent $2.4 billion to Three Arrows, according to court documents. Genesis’s parent company, Digital Currency Group, has a $1.2 billion claim against the hedge fund.

One person killed, 16 injured after SUV crashes into Massachusetts Apple store

One person was killed and 16 other were taken to hospitals for treatment after an SUV crashed into an Apple store Monday morning in Hingham, Massachusetts.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said a criminal investigation is "active and ongoing," local outlet WCVB reported. He said the SUV was traveling at an undetermined speed when it crashed.

The crash occurred less than an hour after the Apple store, south of Boston, opened at 10 a.m.

The vehicle rammed through the glass into the back area of the store, witness Frank O'Brien said.

Another witness said the driver appeared injured but alert after the collision. Cruz said the driver was not taken to a hospital and is in police custody.

Divided U.S. Rail Unions Raise Specter of Strike

WASHINGTON/LOS ANGELES, Nov 21 (Reuters) – The two largest U.S. rail unions representing conductors and engineers split in ratification votes on a tentative contract deal reached in September raising the possibility of a strike or lockout that could cause significant damage to the U.S. economy. 

Members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) voted to ratify the agreement while train and engine service members the transportation division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART-TD) voted to reject the deal. SMART-TD yardmasters voted to ratify their national agreement, the unions said Monday.

The vote could put pressure on Congress to intervene to prevent a strike or lockout ahead of the holiday season.

“The ball is now in the railroads’ court. Let’s see what they do. They can settle this at the bargaining table,” said SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson said in a statement. “This can all be settled through negotiations and without a strike.”

If there is a strike by any of the unions that voted against the deal, BLET and other rail unions that have ratified agreements have pledged to lawfully honor the picket lines.

Business groups warn strand vital shipments of food and fuel. Seven of the 12 unions involved in the talks previously approved the deal, while three previously have voted against it but agreed to extend a strike deadline until early December.

Beginning on Dec. 9, SMART-TD would be allowed to go on strike or the rail carriers would be permitted to lock out workers — unless Congress intervenes.

The White House did not immediately comment.

The standoff between U.S. railroad operators and their union workers disrupted flows of hazardous materials such as chemicals used in fertilizer and disrupted U.S. passengerrailroad Amtrak service in September as railroads prepared for a possible work stoppage. 

The Biden administration helped avert a service cutoff by hosting last-minute contract talks in September at the Labor Department that led to a tentative contract deal.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said last month “any shutdown would be completely unacceptable. It is the responsibility of the parties involved to resolve this issue.”

Last week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Congress should step in to prevent a potential rail disruption, warning it would be catastrophic for the economy. Automaker General Motors has said a halt would force it to stop production of some trucks within about a day.

A rail shutdown could freeze almost 30% of U.S. cargo shipments by weight, stoke inflation, cost the American economy as much as $2 billion per day and unleash a cascade of transport woes affecting U.S. energy, agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and retail sectors.

The deal included a 24% compounded wage increase over a five-year period from 2020 through 2024 and five annual $1,000 lump sum payments.

The unions represent 115,000 workers at railroads, including Union Pacific, Berkshire Hathaway Inc’s BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern and Kansas City Southern.

During the Trump administration, the FBI paid $5 million to an Israeli software company for a license to use its “zero-click” surveillance software called Pegasus. Zero-click refers to software that can download the contents of a target’s computer or mobile device without the need for tricking the target into clicking on it. The FBI operated the software from a warehouse in New Jersey.

Now back to the FBI and Phantom.

In July 2021, President Biden personally put a stop to the FBI’s use of Phantom, and the congressional intelligence committees assumed that that was the end of it.

Yet last week, when reporters revealed the results of Freedom of Information Act requests for memos and court documents pertaining to Phantom, a different story emerged. Pegasus relied on a whopping three zero-day (previously unknown) vulnerabilities in iOS that allowed it to silently jailbreak the device and install surveillance software.

As for surveillance, let’s be clear: We’re talking total surveillance. Pegasus is modular malware. After scanning the target’s device, it installs the necessary modules to read the user’s messages and mail, listen to calls, capture screenshots, log pressed keys, exfiltrate browser history, contacts, and so on and so forth. Basically, it can spy on every aspect of the target’s life.

It’s also noteworthy that Pegasus could even listen to encrypted audio streams and read encrypted messages — thanks to its keylogging and audio recording capabilities, it was stealing messages before they were encrypted (and, for incoming messages, after decryption).Another interesting fact about Pegasus is that it tries to hide itself really diligently. The malware self-destructs if it is not able to communicate with its command-and-control (C&C) server for more than 60 days, or if it detects that it was installed on the wrong device with the wrong SIM card (remember, this is targeted spying; NSO’s clients weren’t going after random victims).

Pegasus for Android does not rely on zero-day vulnerabilities. Instead it uses a well-known rooting method called Framaroot. Another difference: If iOS version fails to jailbreak the device, the whole attack fails, but with the Android version, even if the malware fails to obtain the necessary root access to install surveillance software, it will still try directly asking the user for the permissions it needs to exfiltrate at least some data.

Judicial Watch: San Francisco District Attorney Refuses to Release Details of Police Response to Assault of Paul Pelosi

It also asked for communications with several federal agencies, including the Justice Department, the Capitol Police, and the FBI. Judicial Watch also asked for the identities of the persons at the Pelosi home at the time of the incident.

In declining the information requested, Assistant DA Moore cited Section 6254, governing records requests, and specifically subsection (f), which allows for the withholding from the public of certain “records of investigations conducted by the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice, the Office of Emergency Services and any state or local police agency …”

“There is significant public interest in the terrible attack on Paul Pelosi and it is odd that the local authorities are withholding basic information about the incident,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.

In September, Judicial Watch received records from the California Highway Patrol Public Records Unit that included 44 photos and five hours of audio/video footage depicting the misconduct and arrest of Paul Pelosi. Phantom another NSO built software for encryption cracking

Recently, Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) engaged with NSO on newly-developedencryption cracking software called Phantom that would enable federal law enforcement to work around U.S. privacy lawsin criminal cases without cooperation from mobile carriers, Apple or Google, the New York Times reported. The U.S. was the only country allowed to license the software, the report said.

The FBI has acknowledged testing Pegasus for criminal investigations, the Post reported. In a statement to the newspaper, the FBI said the spyware had not been used “in support of any investigation.”

Discussions with Justice officials and the FBI about Phantom reportedly continued until last summer when the latter agency decided not to engage with the spyware maker on Phantom. FYI, NSO Group claims to have developed the best spying tool (as Phantom) that has the potential to hack into any phone device operating in United States.

Iranian cyberfirm caught impersonating Proud Boys

The FBI issued a private industry notification to warn organizations of an Iranian cyber firm conducting malicious activities against them. Named Emennet Pasargad, the company has frequently rebranded to evade sanctions imposed by the U.S. government. The alert also details the TTPs used by the group.

What’s going on?

Emennet posed as a radical right organization, named Proud Boys, during the presidential election in 2020. As per the FBI’s notice, the group has expanded its operations and is targeting various industry verticals and propagating hostile propaganda. The agency stated that Emennet performed conventional cyber exploitation against news, travel, shipping, financial, telecoms, and oil & petrochemical sectors in the U.S., the Middle East, and Europe.

Modus operandi

The group used multiple VPNs to hide their location and various commercial and open-source tools, such as Acunetix, SQLmap, Wappalyzer, Shodan, wpscan, Netsparker, and Dnsdumpster.

It chose its targets by combing the web for major firms in various sectors.

The hackers would, subsequently, look for vulnerabilities to exploit in the targets’ software.

In some cases, they would try identifying hosting and shared hosting services.

The researchers found that Emennet was especially interested in webpages running PHP code, along with WordPress, Apache Tomcat, and Drupal.

The group has, moreover, tried to leverage past intrusions by other actors.

In October 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York charged two Iranian nationals associated with Emennet for cyber fraud and intrusion, conspiracy offense, and interstate threats.

The Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control denominated Emennet, four members from the firm’s management, and two employees for their attempts at influencing the election.

The hackers had, formerly, launched cyber-enabled information operations using a false flag image to distribute propaganda via SMS.

Qatar’s state firm QatarEnergy signed on Monday the longest-term contract in the history of the LNG industry in a deal to supply LNG to Chinese state energy giant Sinopec for 27 years. QatarEnergy will supply China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) with 4 million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG to China from the North Filed East (NFE) expansion project, just as global competition for LNG intensifies amid a European rush to secure non-Russian gas supply. “This is the first long-term SPA from the NFE project to be announced, and marks the longest gas supply agreement in the history of the LNG industry,” said Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy. Qatar has traditionally preferred long-term supply deals with customers, at which Europe balked earlier this year. But more recently, even European companies have started negotiations for longer-term supply with LNG providers.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, competition for LNG has become intense, with Europe in particular needing vast amounts to help replace Russian pipeline gas that used to make up almost 40% of the continent’s imports.

“Today is an important milestone for the first sales and purchase agreement (SPA) for North Field East project, it is 4 million tonnes for 27 years to Sinopec of China,” QatarEnergy chief Saad al-Kaabi told Reuters in Doha, shortly before the deal signing.

“It signifies long-term deals are here and important for both seller and buyer,” he said, adding that the deal was the LNG sector’s largest single sales and purchase agreement on record.

The North Field is part of the world’s biggest gas field that Qatar shares with Iran, which calls its share South Pars.

QatarEnergy earlier this year signed five deals for North Field East (NFE), the first and larger of the two-phase North Field expansion plan, which includes six LNG trains that will ramp up Qatar’s liquefaction capacity to 126 million tonnes per year by 2027 from 77 million.

It later signed contracts with three partners for North Field South (NFS), the second phase of the expansion.

Monday’s deal, confirmed by Sinopec, is the first supply deal to be announced for NFE.

The deal was signed on an ex-ship basis, meaning QatarEnergy will provide the shipping and delivery of the LNG.

The supply contract is a key component for an integrated partnership in the NFE, Sinopec said in a statement, indicating it could be involved in stake negotiations.

QatarEnergy has maintained a 75% stake overall in the expansion and could give up to a 5% stake from its holding to some buyers, Kaabi said.

Sources told Reuters in June that China’s national oil majors were in advanced talks with Qatar to invest in NFE.

The Israeli woman allegedly assaulted in July by an off-duty Secret Service agent — who was in Jerusalem to prep for President Biden’s visit — filed a civil lawsuit Monday.

Tamar Ben Haim brought the case in DC federal court against the unidentified agent over the July 12 attack, which took place in an alleyway while she was walking home around 1 a.m.

The 30-year-old graphic designer says the man — who she saw had a gun — “began hitting and slapping her” and she thought “that these were her last moments on Earth.”

The man “held Tamar tightly, hit her on her chest, repeatedly, slapped her, causing her earring and earphone to fall to the ground,” the court papers claim.

Ben Haim screamed for help but no one came until a man accompanying her assailant pulled him off her before leaving the scene, the filing claims.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney under investigation after begging for Met Gala invite

Outgoing Upper East Side Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is being probed by ethics investigators for potentially violating House of Representatives rules and federal law by requesting tickets to the Met Gala in 2016, the chamber’s Ethics Committee revealed Monday.

The 76-year-old Maloney, whose three-decade run in Congress came to an end at the hands of fellow Rep. Jerry Nadler in a nasty August primary brought about by redistricting, called former museum President Emily Rafferty in March 2016 to beg a ticket to that year’s edition of the star-studded event after she was left off the guest list, according to a damning report from the Office of Congressional Ethics.

The OCE report included an April 2, 2016 email from Rafferty to Met executives in which she said Maloney was “unhappy to say the least that she is not receiving an invitation to the Party of the Year.”

“She went on about how much she does for the Met, always responsive when you call and proactive re the institution’s concerns in DC,” Rafferty wrote. “She has been coming to the party for years and it is the one thing she cares about … For what it is worth, I highly recommend you include Carolyn, [then-New York City Comptroller] Scott Stringer and his wife in your 80 allotted spaces.”

While going to a charitable event for free is not barred by House rules if the invitation is unsolicited, the solicitation of free tickets is not allowed.

A 2018 email from Tom Schuler, the museum’s former chief government relations officer, indicated that Maloney’s tantrum had earned her a permanent spot on the guest list.

“We have ultimately secured one seat for her each year,” Schuler wrote.

The OCE report also indicated that the gala was often top of mind for the lawmaker in subsequent years.

“Did we hear from the Met on the Met Ball? Am I invited this year??” a February 2020 email from Maloney to a staffer reads.

When the staffer responds that Maloney has not yet been invited to the glitzy showcase, and that a meeting with Schuler was being planned to solicit an invite, Maloney responds, “How do I call him?”

The event was ultimately scrapped that year due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The OCE report concluded that there was “substantial reason to believe that Rep. Maloney may have solicited or accepted impermissible gifts associated with her attendance at the Met Gala.”

The House Ethics Committee announced Monday that the matter had been referred by the OCE in June of this year and the committee had voted last month to extend its review.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact of conducting further review of a referral, and any mandatory disclosure of such further review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,” the panel noted.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022, at 1:03 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

A second report was later issued by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), which listed it as a magnitude 7.0 earthquake.
