To be perfectly honest with you, I only really speak on subjects I feel confident that I've read a decent amount about (though some semi-frequent speculation is entertaining sometimes). I'm just annoyed that there isn't anywhere near as much stimulating research/discussion here as there used to be.

Jeffrey Epstein received a valuable tax break on the basis of an outlandish business plan to study people's DNA on a Caribbean island and sell the resulting data to drug manufacturers.

The venture overseeing the project, called Southern Trust, pulled in $200 million in revenues, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Epstein, a financier and convicted sex offender, died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in August after federal prosecutors filed sex trafficking charges against him.

In years past, Epstein surrounded himself with scientists and other scholars, crafting plans that ranged from racist to eccentric. He once aimed to impregnate women in an attempt to seed the human race with his own DNA. On another occasion, he brought environmentally harmful species to an island in the Caribbean, prompting a warning from local officials.

One of his lesser-known plans involved sequencing people's genomes.

The goal was to create a search engine capable of pinpointing genetic links to diseases like cancer, according to a 2012 transcript obtained by Business Insider through a public-records request. The transcript contains Epstein's testimony before the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority, as part of an application he filed on the behalf of one of his companies, Southern Trust, for tax breaks.

"What Southern Trust will do will be basically organizing mathematical algorithms so that if I want to know what my predisposition is for cancer we can now have my genes specifically sequenced," Epstein said…

New Mexico judge, pets killed by husband in suspected murder-suicide

November 27, 2022

A well-respected New Mexico judge was shot dead by her husband who then turned the gun on himself, but not before he left a disturbing message for a friend, according to police.

Village of Los Ranchos Municipal Judge Diane Albert died in a suspected murder-suicide, as did some of her pets, that was allegedly carried out by her husband Eric Pinkerton, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Albert, 65, and Pinkerton, 63, were found by officials Friday after a friend of the couple contacted authorities about receiving a “troubling message,” from Pinkerton, sheriff’s spokesperson Jayme Fuller said.

“He left a voice-mail to his friend stating that he murdered his wife and his dogs and his cat. And he is about to murder himself,” according to a dispatch pieced together by local news station KOAT-TV.

NBC News reported the sheriff’s office confirmed the dispatch.

City officials mourned her death over the weekend.

“We are heartsick hearing of the untimely death of Diane Albert, our elected municipal judge,” said Los Ranchos Mayor Donald Lopez and Village Administrator Ann Simon in a joint statement. “She was a longtime Los Ranchos resident, a brilliant legal mind, and a friend.”

Albert was also a practicing patent attorney, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

A neighbor of Albert’s, Joe Craig, told the newspaper he was shocked by her death. Craig, the president of Friends of Los Ranchos, worked on the planning and zoning commission for several years.

“Just a nice, nice lady,” he said. “I’ve never seen her with a mean bone in her body.”
