Missouri Gov. Parson appoints top counsel Andrew Bailey as state’s next attorney general

Bailey, who has served as Parson’s general counsel since last year, was widely considered the likely choice for the job. Parson had interviewed four other potential candidates prior to Wednesday’s announcement, multiple sources told The Star.

Parson, during a news conference in Jefferson City Wednesday, said his choice of Bailey was an easy one. He said he picked Bailey to bring stability to the office.

 

“When considering the next AG, I looked for five core things — commitment to law and order, patriotism and respect for the Constitution, conservative values, family values, and someone who would promote calm and steady while never afraid to fight for Missourians,” he said.

 

Bailey, 41, on Wednesday vowed to push back against federal overreach.

 

“I’m going to bring my leadership, my legal experience, my fighting spirit and all of the intellectual firepower I have to bear on this mission,” he said. “I will deliver victories for the people of this state.”

 

Bailey, of Rhineland, will be sworn into the office in early January when Schmitt officially resigns from the role to take his seat in the U.S. Senate.

 

Bailey has never held an elected office. He started working as Parson’s deputy general counsel in 2019 before Parson hired him to the top position last year.

The attorney general position is widely viewed as the second most powerful state-level position in Missouri and has often been used as a political launching pad for higher office. Schmitt, during his tenure as attorney general, largely built his reputation through a barrage of legal challenges.

He unsuccessfully tried to sue China for the COVID-19 pandemic. He filed lawsuits against 47 school districts for enacting mask mandates. And he filed legal actions against the federal government and the Biden administration over a host of policies, from vaccine mandates to immigration.

Shortly after Bailey’s appointment, Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade, a Springfield Democrat, criticized Schmitt and called on Bailey to immediately dismiss Schmitt’s lawsuits.

“Upon taking over in January, Attorney General-designee Andrew Bailey must immediately move to dismiss every one of Schmitt’s frivolous lawsuits that hasn’t already been laughed out of court,” Quade said in a statement. “This is an essential step to restoring the integrity of the office and demonstrating that, for the first time in years, Missouri has an attorney general who will put the legal interests of all Missourians ahead of the political ambitions of one.”

Asked Wednesday whether he would continue to pursue Schmitt’s ongoing lawsuits, Bailey broadly said he would review the state’s pending cases but he touted the work of his predecessors, Schmitt and Sen. Josh Hawley.

“There is a legacy of excellence that both General Hawley and General Schmitt are leaving behind that I intend to continue and carry on,” he said. “We’re always going to look for ways to get better. But what I do know is that when Missourians who value liberty want someone to stand in the gap against federal overreach, I’m going to be the attorney general who does precisely that.”

Biohackers Encoded Malware in a Strand of DNA

Researchers planted a working hacker exploit in a physical strand of DNA.

When biologists synthesize DNA, they take pains not to create or spread a dangerous stretch of genetic code that could be used to create a toxin or, worse, an infectious disease. But one group of biohackers has demonstrated how DNA can carry a less expected threat—one designed to infect not humans nor animals but computers.

 

In new research they plan to present at the USENIX Security conference on Thursday, a group of researchers from the University of Washington has shown for the first time that it’s possible to encode malicious software into physical strands of DNA, so that when a gene sequencer analyzes it the resulting data becomes a program that corrupts gene-sequencing software and takes control of the underlying computer. While that attack is far from practical for any real spy or criminal, it's one the researchers argue could become more likely over time, as DNA sequencing becomes more commonplace, powerful, and performed by third-party services on sensitive computer systems. And, perhaps more to the point for the cybersecurity community, it also represents an impressive, sci-fi feat of sheer hacker ingenuity.

 

“We know that if an adversary has control over the data a computer is processing, it can potentially take over that computer,” says Tadayoshi Kohno, the University of Washington computer science professor who led the project, comparing the technique to traditional hacker attacks that package malicious code in web pages or an email attachment. “That means when you’re looking at the security of computational biology systems, you’re not only thinking about the network connectivity and the USB drive and the user at the keyboard but also the information stored in the DNA they’re sequencing. It’s about considering a different class of threat.”

 

A Sci-Fi Hack

For now, that threat remains more of a plot point in a Michael Crichton novel than one that should concern computational biologists. But as genetic sequencing is increasingly handled by centralized services—often run by university labs that own the expensive gene sequencing equipment—that DNA-borne malware trick becomes ever so slightly more realistic. Especially given that the DNA samples come from outside sources, which may be difficult to properly vet.

 

If hackers did pull off the trick, the researchers say they could potentially gain access to valuable intellectual property, or possibly taint genetic analysis like criminal DNA testing. Companies could even potentially place malicious code in the DNA of genetically modified products, as a way to protect trade secrets, the researchers suggest. "There are a lot of interesting—or threatening may be a better word—applications of this coming in the future," says Peter Ney, a researcher on the project.

 

Regardless of any practical reason for the research, however, the notion of building a computer attack—known as an "exploit"—with nothing but the information stored in a strand of DNA represented an epic hacker challenge for the University of Washington team. The researchers started by writing a well-known exploit called a "buffer overflow," designed to fill the space in a computer's memory meant for a certain piece of data and then spill out into another part of the memory to plant its own malicious commands.

 

But encoding that attack in actual DNA proved harder than they first imagined. DNA sequencers work by mixing DNA with chemicals that bind differently to DNA's basic units of code—the chemical bases A, T, G, and C—and each emit a different color of light, captured in a photo of the DNA molecules. To speed up the processing, the images of millions of bases are split up into thousands of chunks and analyzed in parallel. So all the data that comprised their attack had to fit into just a few hundred of those bases, to increase the likelihood it would remain intact throughout the sequencer's parallel processing.

 

When the researchers sent their carefully crafted attack to the DNA synthesis service Integrated DNA Technologies in the form of As, Ts, Gs, and Cs, they found that DNA has other physical restrictions too. For their DNA sample to remain stable, they had to maintain a certain ratio of Gs and Cs to As and Ts, because the natural stability of DNA depends on a regular proportion of A-T and G-C pairs. And while a buffer overflow often involves using the same strings of data repeatedly, doing so in this case caused the DNA strand to fold in on itself. All of that meant the group had to repeatedly rewrite their exploit code to find a form that could also survive as actual DNA, which the synthesis service would ultimately send them in a finger-sized plastic vial in the mail.

In the interview, Webb reviews the history of transhumanism, the roots of which go back to Julian Huxley, brother of the famous author Aldous Huxley. Julian was president of the British Eugenics Society.

When the United Nations was created after World War II, he was put in charge of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the stated aim of which is to promote world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences, and culture.

But in writing about his vision for UNESCO, Julian said about eugenics, “We need to make the unthinkable thinkable again.” Ten years later, in 1957, he coined the term “transhumanism,” and described it as eugenics through the merging of man with machine.

So, transhumanism is eugenics rebranded. This is also corroborated by the fact that the same people, families, and organizations that in the past supported eugenics now support transhumanism. Likewise, the merger of Silicon Valley companies with Big Pharma is nothing other than eugenics framed as health care. And COVID has now shown us that this rebranded form of eugenics can be forced on us.

Transhumanism is not for betterment of the average person

As noted by Webb, while transhumanism is sold to us as a way for all people to obtain health and longevity – health equity for all! – the reality will be far from equitable.

US Defense Department is also working on human cyborgs

In a September 14, 2022, Substack article, Dr. Robert Malone also reviewed the U.S. DoD’s plans for an army of human cyborgs. Certain report titles alone tell the story, such as the Biotechnologies for Health and Human Performance Council’s report “Cyborg Soldier 2050: Human/Machine Fusion and the Implications for the Future of the DOD.” According to the assessment abstract:

The primary objective of this effort was to forecast and evaluate the military implications of machines that are physically integrated with the human body to augment and enhance human performance over the next 30 years.

This report summarizes this assessment and findings; identifies four potential military-use cases for new technologies in this area; and assesses their impact upon the DOD organizational structure, warfighter doctrine and tactics, and interoperability with U.S. allies and civil society.

Human augmentation technologies deemed technically feasible by 2050 at the latest include ocular enhancements to improve sight and situational awareness, optogenetic bodysuit to restore or improve muscular strength and control, auditory enhancements, and neural enhancement of the brain for two-way data transfers and brain-to-brain communication.

With H.G. Wells’ description of our transhumanist future in mind (the two-tiered society of augmented super humans and bug-eating devolved slaves), it’s worth noting that both the DoD’s “Cyborg Soldier” report and the British-German “Human Augmentation” report address the fact that human augmentation will inevitably widen already existing disparities, inequalities and inequities – not close them – and therefore, “efforts should be undertaken to reverse negative cultural narratives of enhancement technologies.”

In other words, don’t let people come to the conclusion that human “borgs” are a bad idea, because at worst that might prevent their development, and at best, it’ll pitch regular people against the augmented elite, making their efforts to rule more difficult. Combating negative narratives about the borgification of mankind is also necessary in order to maintain the lie that transhumanism is about leveling the playing field and allowing everyone to live longer and have lifelong health.

Final thoughts

I don’t know what it will take to prevent the dystopian post-human world envisioned by technocratic transhumanist elitists, but I suspect education would be a cornerstone of such an endeavor. In order for there to be a resistance, enough people need to be aware of what the plan is, and where we’re actually being led with all these novel therapies and inventions.

Meet the Guys Who Sold “Neuralink” to Elon Musk without Even Realizing It

 

What’s in a name? Neuralink is a lot sweeter now that a billionaire is behind it.

Last week, we learned that Elon Musk will start a mind-computer interface company called Neuralink. The name added a brainy new entry to Musk’s growing scroll of big ideas—Tesla, SolarCity, SpaceX, the Hyperloop.

 

But as the news of Musk’s nascent venture to merge man and machine spread across social media, an electrical engineer in Ohio named Pedram Mohseni must have been slapping his forehead.

 

That's because in January he'd agreed to sell the name Neuralink to Musk without realizing it.

 

Mohseni, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, and his scientific partner, Randolph Nudo of Kansas University Medical Center, had owned the trademark on "NeuraLink" since 2015 after creating their own startup company.

 

The pair of longtime neurotech researchers had developed a device that might help people with brain injuries. But their initial contacts with investors hadn’t advanced very far when a stranger approached them offering tens of thousands of dollars for their company’s name. They accepted. No one mentioned that Musk, whose net worth is $14.7 billion according to Forbes, was behind it.

 

“They approached us, we negotiated, and now Elon Musk will be the rightful owner of Neuralink,” says Mohseni.

 

Instead of hard feelings, Mohseni says he’s excited. Finally, tech titans are throwing money behind some far-out ideas that a small number of neuroscientists have long championed and doggedly sought to advance.

 

In addition to Musk, the online payments entrepreneur Bryan Johnson is putting $100 million in a company called Kernel, which is also developing brain implants.

 

In uncovering details of Musk’s venture, the Wall Street Journal last week reported the company will develop new ways to treat disease but ultimately also a means of fusing human and machine intelligence. That’s something Musk seems to think is necessary to counter the risk of runaway artificial intelligence.

 

It’s “difficult to dedicate the time” to yet another high-tech venture, in addition to electric cars and space rockets, Musk tweeted, “but existential risk is too high not to.”

 

Just how brain technology will let humanity keep up with AI is anyone’s guess—and Musk’s company hasn’t said what it intends. But Rikky Muller, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, says treating medical conditions and the aim of connecting consciousness to computers “are not unrelated, because anything implanted in the human body has to meet all the standards of a medical device.”

 

No one knows that better than Nudo and Mohseni. Their story—the story of the original Neuralink—shows the kind of challenges Musk will face trying to fill the brain with electronics.

 

Starting in 2011, Mohseni, a bioengineer, and Nudo, a brain specialist, began exploring an idea for an electronic brain chip to treat traumatic brain injury. Their idea: reëstablish damaged connections by recording neurons in one part of the brain, then transmitting the chatter to another. By 2013, they’d even demonstrated that their prototype could help brain-damaged rats.

 

That’s when the duo formed NeuraLink (which they spelled with a capital "L"). But raising money proved difficult. Any device that’s going to end up in the human brain needs to be as reliable as a Swiss clock and could easily take $200 million to develop and test. What’s more, while Nudo and Mohseni had some provocative data, they couldn’t say for sure the system would help anyone. Even if they did, there might not be enough eligible patients to justify the big expense. That’s also been a problem for researchers developing devices that read the brains of paralyzed people and allow them to move robotic arms. “Even though it’s a terrible condition, it’s not that many people,” says Nudo. “The thing in neurotech is that even if it works, it’s hard to see profitability.”

Nudo adds: “The feeling among investors was reluctance to invest in invasive brain technology, unless there is a very strong proof of principle. The place where our startup was is that we had a name without a product.”

 

Now, Musk is in the same position. But Mohseni thinks the billionaire might be able to blast through obstacles. “The whole idea of uploading or downloading thoughts to a healthy person, well, that is pie in the sky, but he has the credibility and vision to talk about those things,” Mohseni says. “We still have to advance our work a bit more, obtain some preliminary human data, before we can go to the investment community. But Mr. Musk doesn’t have that problem.”

 

A spokesperson for Musk declined to say why the entrepreneur wanted the Neuralink name badly enough to pay for it, but Mohseni believes it was worth every penny. “The name Neuralink really nicely captures what is happening in the field of neuromodulation,” he says.

 

Only a very few types of electronic brain implants have ever reached the market. The most widely employed, and sold by medical device giant Medtronic, is a “deep brain stimulator” able to stop the tremors of people with Parkinson’s disease. More than 140,000 patients have received versions of Medtronic’s stimulator, and the company’s brain modulation division has about $500 million in annual sales.

 

The Medtronic stimulator is in some ways low tech—it’s based on 1980s technology—and uses just one or two electrodes to continually send zaps of electricity into the brain. In fact, no one is exactly sure why it works. Very roughly, it’s the neuroscience equivalent of banging on a TV to adjust the picture.

 

Lothar Krinke, who manages that business for Medtronic, says the company continues to invest in making the system smaller and adding features for surgeons who implant it. “These things take much longer than you think to bring to market,” says Krinke. “When you talk about these systems, you have to talk about reliability. A brain implant has to perform for [decades].”

 

More recently, a company called NeuroPace began selling the first “closed-loop” brain implant for epilepsy patients. That’s a leap forward because the device can both detect a seizure coming on and then zap the brain to stop it, creating an automatic control loop. It's a neuralink, if you will.

 

But other ventures have not gone so well. The list of failed brain-interface companies includes BrainGate and Northstar, a company that liquidated itself in 2009 after spending $132 million in an attempt to help stroke patients recover with a brain implant.

 

Nudo and Mohseni, who have funding from the U.S. Army and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, say they would still like to raise money from investors to advance their idea towards commercialization.

 

Now that they sold off the name Neuralink to Musk, Nudo says he has been thinking up new names for their company. “But I don’t want to tell you what they are. Someone else would buy the trademark before we do,” he says.

It’s a conversation that refuses to go away in the Donald Trump era. Once, it was a less charged discussion: Conservative protectionists and populists on both the left and right supported trade barriers and tariffs, and opposed multilateral trade deals, against views they termed “globalist” – those favoring economic policies that emphasize international cooperation, free trade and the lowering of barriers.

Coulter is an unabashed Trump-supporting, anti-immigration hyper-patriot who authors books with unsubtle titles like “Adios, America! The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole.” Last week, she was reacting with disgust to the controversy regarding Trump referring to his outgoing top economic adviser, Gary Cohn, as a globalist.

“He may be a globalist but I still like him,” Trump said at Cohn’s final cabinet meeting last Thursday, adding, “He’s seriously a globalist. There’s no question.”

Those words echoed those of White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, who said of Cohn’s departure, “I never expected that the co-worker I would work closest, and best, with at the White House would be a ‘globalist.’” Meanwhile, a Fox News reporter asked White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders whether Cohn would be replaced with “another globalist.”

A BBC journalist was arrested, beaten and kicked by Chinese police as China’s biggest anti-government protests since Tiananmen in 1989 surged into Beijing on Sunday night.

 

Hundreds of protesters gathered on Sunday afternoon at Tsinghua University, the prestigious institution in Beijing where President Xi studied Marxist theory.

 

At least another thousand people gathered on the south bank of Beijing’s Liangma river, near one of the capital’s diplomatic precincts.

 

“We want freedom! We want human rights!” they chanted into the early hours of Monday morning.

 

They were surrounded by a tremendous police presence, which grew as the demonstration continued into the early hours of Monday morning.

 

China’s police were more aggressive in Shanghai where a group of protesters returned to the site of a Saturday night protest, images of which overwhelmed China’s online censorship regime. It was to hold a vigil to mark the death of 10 people in a fire in Urumqi, a city in Xinjiang.

 

BBC journalist Ed Lawrence was roughed up, handcuffed and detained by Shanghai police while covering the protest.

 

Chinese authorities told the BBC they arrested Lawrence for his own good, “in case he caught Covid from the crowd,” according to the BBC.

 

“We do not consider this a credible explanation,” the BBC said in a statement.

 

Although he was released after several hours, the BBC said it was “extremely concerned” about his treatment, as Lawrence was in the middle of “carrying out his duties”.

 

On Sunday night, protests also broke out in Wuhan, Chengdu and Guangzhou, three megacities in China’s centre, west and south.

 

They followed similar unrest on Saturday in Nanjing, China’s republican capital before the communists took power, and Xi’an, a former imperial Chinese capital.

 

The widespread outpouring of public anger began in reaction to a fire in Urumqi, Xinjiang, last week which killed ten people.

 

Many in China have linked the tragedy to Mr Xi’s signature “dynamic zero Covid” policy, which they ­believe stopped victims from ­escaping the flames, although ­Chinese authorities deny this.

 

Since then the protests have spiralled to encompass complaints about the Chinese government’s draconian Covid regime, quashing of freedom of speech and Mr Xi’s dictatorial rule.

On Sunday night, protesters brought flowers to many of the public gatherings, a token of respect for the victims of the fire, and held up blank pieces of paper.

 

In a country in which posting anti-government slogans online or in public can lead to a swift arrest, the blank pieces of paper are a potent and popular symbol of resistance.

 

Most of the protesters are young urban residents, although some older citizens have joined them.

 

As midnight approached on Sunday night, an old lady joined the crowd by Beijing’s Liangma river, chanting with them: “liberate Beijing!”, “liberate China!” and “let the children go back to school!”

 

Authorities have already begun preparing to stop the national protests continuing on Monday evening.

 

Overnight, authorities removed the street sign for Wulumqi Road in Shanghai where the protests have been centred. The road is named after the city in Xinjiang where last week’s fire broke out.

 

Early on Monday morning, authorities had erected massive blue barriers along the street.

 

Experts in Chinese politics warned the Communist Party would respond to the public outcry with a harsh crackdown.

 

“No matter what happens to zero-Covid, political control can only tighten in the months ahead,” said Taisu Zhang, a Professor of Law at Yale Law School and an expert on contemporary Chinese law and politics.

 

“If the government doubles down on zero-Covid, then obviously it needs to shut down the protests without giving in,” said Professor Zhang.

 

“If, however … it decides to open up as a compromise, then that will also paradoxically require more tightening, both to avoid showing weakness and to deal with the inevitable social anxiety over significant virus spread.”

 

“Either way, this will be a hard winter, politically and economically.”

When victims report a sexual assault, they can consent to a sexual assault examination, where biological evidence from bodily fluids, fingernail scrapings, and bite and scratch marks is collected from the victim’s body.

 

The victim submits their own DNA sample in order to exclude their DNA from an investigation. Additional samples may be collected from those who have close contact with the victim, such as consensual sexual partners and family members.

 

Federal law already prohibits the inclusion of victims’ DNA in the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), the DNA database used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This corresponding state law prohibits local authorities from retaining and using the sexual assault victims’ DNA samples for other purposes.
