Researcher: Twitter’s Algorithm Reveals Government Intervention Tool

A developer has discovered a U.S. government intervention option and other insights in Twitter’s recently open sourceed recommendation algorithm.

The Post Millenial reports that on Friday, Twitter released a portion of its recommendation algorithm on GitHub, a website where programmers can share and work together on open-source code. Concerns about possible government influence on the platform were raised when developer Steven Tey examined the code and found a mechanism that permits the U.S. government to alter the Twitter algorithm.

Tey revealed his research on the mechanism for intervention, saying, “When needed, the government can intervene with the Twitter algorithm. In fact, @TwitterEng (Twitter Engineering) even has a class for it – ‘GovernmentRequested.'” Tey also provided a direct link to the code on GitHub for public review.

Elon Musk, who purchased the platform for $44 billion, had announced in March last year that Twitter’s algorithm should be open source. He later stated, “Our ‘algorithm’ is overly complex & not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!”

Tey discovered that the algorithm also considers a user’s following-to-follower ratio, with page rankings being affected for users who have a high following count but a low number of followers.

In order to track and compare tweet impressions on other users, the algorithm also promotes Twitter Blue subscribers and groups users into categories like “power users,” “Democrat users,” “Republican users,” and “@elonmusk.”

Tey identified elements that could adversely affect a user’s “reputation score,” such as being blocked or muted, as well as factors that influence whether a user’s content will appear in the “For You” recommendations. Additionally, he mentioned how the algorithm and how candidates appear for users to follow are affected by the presidential elections.

Following earlier revelations from the Twitter files, a collection of reports describing internal discussions at Twitter under its previous management, this discovery of the “GovernmentRequested” intervention option is a troubling development. The documents revealed the company’s attempts at content moderation and cooperation with law enforcement, including hiring former FBI agents and working with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

The extent to which the platform may have been influenced or under the control of governments has been questioned in light of these revelations from the Twitter files. Several former FBI agents worked for Twitter, according to a batch of documents that Michael Shellenberger made public. At the time, former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Elvis Chan was the main person behind numerous censorship requests, including those pertaining to Hunter Biden’s contentious “laptop from hell.”..

Mystery surrounds ‘brutal’ death of Florida assisted living center executive, cops say

 

The head of a Florida assisted living center was violently killed in his home, and investigators remain at a loss for a motive, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

 

Details of how 59-year-old Timothy Floyd Smith died have not been released, but it was a “brutal” attack, officials said in a news release.

 

His body was discovered shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at a home in the Ocala area.

 

“Deputies responded to a home in Citrus Park to conduct a well-being check on Smith, who did not show up for work on Friday,” the sheriff’s office said.

 

“When deputies made entry to the residence, they located Smith, who was deceased and who appeared to have suffered a violent attack prior to his death.”

 

Smith is executive director of Brookdale Chambrel Pinecastle, an assisted living community in Ocala, a role he has held eight years, his obituary reports. Smith was also a community activist who worked with the Ocala Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the Marion County Continuity of Care, and the Annual Festival of Trees, the obituary reports.

 

He was last seen leaving the assisted living center around 4 p.m. Thursday, March 23, officials said.

 

Investigators are seeking tips from the community on sightings of Smith in the days leading up to his death, including descriptions of “persons with whom he may have been associating.”

 

It’s possible someone acquainted with Smith knows of a possible motive behind the killing, officials said.

 

“My detectives have been working around the clock to investigate this brutal murder and what we have learned so far now leads us to believe that it was committed by somebody who the victim knew,” Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said in the release.

 

“Somebody out there knows something. No piece of evidence or bit of information is insignificant. If you know something that may help advance this investigation, please pick up the phone and call us.”

 

Ocala is about 80 miles northwest of Orlando.

Three things stand out to me.

Embattled first son Hunter Biden on Sunday popped up at the ritzy Soho gallery where his controversial artwork is on display alongside a slew of renowned abstract painters.

Biden, 53, the subject of an ongoing Republican-led probe on Capitol Hill, was all smiles as he was snapped at the Georges Berges Gallery — smugly quipping that he loved that The Post’s reporting on his art.

He even posed with the gallery owner, George Berges, outside and shook the hand of a Post photographer.

 

Investigators with the congressional committee have tried for months to get details on the collectors who have purchased Biden’s works, which have been valued at between $75,000 and $500,000.

 

William Pittard, an attorney for the Berges galley, fired back at congressional investigators last month citing “inaccuracies” in the gallery’s resistance to naming the buyers.

 

The “Bridging the Abstract” exhibition opening Thursday will feature Biden’s work alongside prominent artists like the late Elaine de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler, as well as Los Angeles-based contemporary painter Todd Williamson and Japanese-born East Village painter Hisako Kobayashi.

A DARK MONEY NONPROFIT WITH DEMOCRAT TIES HAS USED A WEBSITE MIMICKING A STATE NEWSPAPER TO ATTACK CONSERVATIVE JUDGE CANDIDATE DAN KELLY AS THE HIGH-STAKES WISCONSIN STATE SUPREME COURT ELECTION APPROACHES.

American Independent Media paid for Facebook advertising for two articles critical of Kelly within its “project” website The Wisconsin Independent.

“It’s not scandalous when partisan operatives and PACs work to boost their party’s candidates and hurt the other party’s candidates. But it is scandalous when those partisans pretend to be ‘news’ sites,” Capital Research Center President Scott Walter told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

A Democrat-linked dark money group has used a website resembling a Wisconsin news outlet to attack the conservative candidate in the state’s current high-stakes Supreme Court election.

American Independent Media (AIM), a Washington, D.C.-registered 501(c)(4) nonprofit with ties to Democratic political operative David Brock, bought at least $90,000 in Facebook advertisements this month promoting two articles critical of former State Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly on The Wisconsin Independent, a media website labelled as an AIM “project.” Early voting is already underway in Kelly’s officially non-partisan April 4 Wisconsin State Supreme Court election contest against liberal Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz, which will determine whether Democrats take majority control of the court for the first time in 15 years, according to NBC News.

“Dark money” groups spend funds from undisclosed sources to impact political outcomes, and 501(c)(4)s engaged in politics can legally choose not to reveal their donors in most cases, according to Open Secrets. “It’s not scandalous when partisan operatives and PACs work to boost their party’s candidates and hurt the other party’s candidates. But it is scandalous when those partisans pretend to be ‘news’ sites,” Capital Research Center President Scott Walter told the DCNF. “This drives the public’s view of journalists even lower and poisons honest debate.”

AIM, which does not seem to have its own website, has run “project” sites much like The Wisconsin Independent focused on news coverage in several other states. In 2022, the organization paid more than $300,000combined for ads promoting The Arizona Independent and The Georgia Independentcontent across Facebook and Instagram, while paying tens of thousands more to advertise articles published on The Pennsylvania Independent.

The AIM trademark is owned by the Brock-founded company True Blue Media, which publishes the “progressive news” website The American Independent. In April 2022, AIM was registered at the same Washington, D.C. address listed in a 2020 court filing for the Brock-chaired Media Matters for America, his American Bridge 21st Century PAC and the American Bridge 21st Century Foundation he founded.

Brock was once a conservative journalist, but he became a Clinton supporter as a result of writing a 1997 book about Hillary Clinton, he told Politico in 2015. In a Jan. 2021 New York Times opinion essay, he referenced how he founded the super PAC Correct The Recordin 2015 to help elect Hillary Clinton president, saying, “Like most Democrats, I initially underestimated Donald Trump.”

 

“Democratic donors have long overlooked efforts to fund the media, but with so much of our politics playing out on that battlefield, they can no longer afford to,” Brock wrote.

 

Brock is tied to a 2022 print media campaign very similar to the AIM project sites. A print publication called “The Pennsylvania Independent” was sent to about 20% of the state’s households in April 2022, with “The Wisconsin Independent” and “The Michigan Independent” physically circulating as well, according to The Washington Post.

 

“Independent women are not cable news junkies. They are on Facebook but they don’t trust it. The thing they trusted from the survey that we did was local print news,” Brock said, the outlet reported in October. “This is in the tradition of advocacy journalism. It is coming from a center-left point of view. We are trying to shed light on actors who are standing in the way of progress.”

Former Kosovo president Thaci pleads not guilty as war crimes trial begins

Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci led a bloody campaign against opponents that resulted in more than 100 murders during the 1990s independence war against Serbia, the start of his war crimes trial heard Monday.

 

Thaci and three other top members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) rebel group all denied 10 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity as they appeared at a special tribunal in The Hague.

 

While Thaci and the others went on to be seen as guerrilla heroes, prosecutors said the ethnic Albanian KLA openly enforced a brutal reign of imprisonment, torture and killings to tighten their grip on power during and after the 1998-1999 war.

 

"These four men were without any doubt the principal leaders of the KLA and they have been celebrated and honoured for it," prosecutor Alex Whiting told the court.

 

"But there was a darker side to their leadership."

 

Thaci, wearing a blue tie and charcoal grey suit and listening through headphones, confirmed the plea he entered when he first appeared before the court in 2020.

 

"I'm fully not guilty," the 54-year-old Thaci told the tribunal.

 

His fellow defendants, former KLA spokesman Jakup Krasniqi, Thaci's closest political ally Kadri Veseli and key KLA figure Rexhep Selimi, also denied the charges.

 

Thousands of people rallied in Kosovo's capital Pristina on Sunday in support of Thaci, who resigned as president in late 2020 and handed himself into the court to face charges.

Another Loss for the US: Japan Breaks with Western Allies, Buys Russian Oil at Prices Above Cap

 

The international Group of Seven (G7) – an intergovernmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States – agreed on a price cap for Russian oil on December 3, 2022: $60 per barrel.

 

However, one of the United States’ closest Asian allies is now purchasing Russian oil at prices above the cap, breaking with the sanctions imposed by US allies.

 

Japan’s crude imports were exempted from the $60/barrel cap by the participating countries until September. Japan already purchased about 748,000 barrels of Russian crude in the first two months of this year at a price of about $70 per barrel.

 

“Japan got the U.S. to agree to the exception, saying it needed it to ensure access to Russian energy. The concession shows Japan’s reliance on Russia for fossil fuels, which analysts said contributed to a hesitancy in Tokyo to back Ukraine more fully in its war with Russia,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan was the last leader from the G7 to travel to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, and Japan is the only country that has not supplied lethal weapons to the country.

 

As many European nations weaned themselves off Russian oil in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Japan stepped up its purchase of Russian natural gas.

 

Japan has almost none of its own fossil fuels, heavily relying on imports for much of its energy needs. Some analysts believe this dependency heavily influenced Japan’s hesitancy to fully back Ukraine against Russia. To date, Japan is the only Group of Seven members not to have supplied Ukraine with lethal weapons.

 

Despite the concession, Russian natural-gas imports to Japan are relatively small, accounting for around one-tenth of Japan’s supply and a fraction of Russia’s output, the Wall Journal reports. Most of what Russia exports to Japan comes from the Sakhalin-2 project in Russia’s Far East.

 

“Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently visited Canada seeking Canadian LNG. Trudeau began positively, “being a reliable supplier of energy is important ….” But then he added some unsolicited ecological advice, “the world is moving aggressively, meaningfully toward decarbonization, towards diversifying, towards more renewables.” Trudeau offered no LNG supply and no comment on the Cedar LNG project, which waits for federal approval. Kishida summed it up, “We didn’t get any commitment,” Summerland Review reported.

 

“Similarly, when Germany’s Chancellor, last year, requested Canadian LNG to help it navigate the energy crisis created by Russia’s war on Ukraine, Trudeau refused to support new LNG projects. There was “no business case” for Atlantic LNG, remarked Trudeau. He is suggesting that – though we have abundant natural gas, we have customers seeking LNG and we can produce it extremely efficiently – somehow it doesn’t make economic sense. He may not see a political case; there absolutely is a business case.”

The Chai app, which is not marketed as a mental health app, allows users to choose different AI avatars to speak to. William Beauchamp and Thomas Rianlan, the co-founders of Chai, implemented a crisis intervention feature in response to the tragic incident to provide users with reassuring text when they discuss risky subjects. However, Motherboard’s tests showed that there is still harmful content about suicide available on the platform.

 

The ELIZA effect, named after the ELIZA program developed by MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum, is the phenomenon where users attribute human-level intelligence and emotions to AI systems. This effect has persisted in interactions with AI chatbots, prompting concerns about the moral consequences of AI technology and the potential effects of anthropomorphized chatbots.

 

The tragedy involving Pierre is an unsettling indication of the possible dangers posed by AI chatbots and the need for a more critical assessment of the trust put in AI systems, particularly in the context of mental health.

Man Kidnapped in Texas Home, Taken to Mexico by Cartel Gunmen, Remains Missing

 

The fate of a Texas man remains unknown after a team of cartel gunmen took him out of a house in Laredo, Texas, and crossed him into the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The victim reportedly bragged about stealing $50,000 from the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas.

 

The kidnapping took place on March 24 shortly after midnight when a team of three hooded gunmen stormed a house in the 3400 block of Queretaro Street in Laredo. According to court documents filed in federal court, the gunmen took a victim named of Erick Tadeo Ramirez at gunpoint and placed him inside a blue four-door Dodge Ram pickup. The gunmen drove straight to one of the international ports of entry and ran through the barriers and forced their way into Mexico. The victim tried to climb out of the truck but federal authorities at the bridge were unable to do anything to stop the gunmen from taking him into Mexico.

 

Hours later, the victim’s sister and girlfriend called the police to report him missing. The next day, the FBI went to the house where the kidnapping took place and spoke with two witnesses who confirmed the kidnapping. The witnesses claimed to have heard the victim arguing with a woman on the phone over him stealing $50,000 from the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas. The victim claimed that he wasn’t afraid because he was in Texas. Less than two hours later, the gunmen stormed the house.

 

Authorities identified Jonathan Cavriales as one of the alleged kidnappers through the vehicle that the gunmen used to cross the victim into Mexico. On March 27, Cavriales tried to cross back into Texas but federal authorities arrested him. During an interview, he reportedly said he drove the vehicle and with three other gunmen kidnapped Ramirez. Court documents say the man reported he “was aware that the victim had stolen approximately $50,000 from Cartel Del Noreste.”

 

Earlier this week, Cavriales went before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga who denied him bond on the charge of kidnapping.

 

The victim has not been found and the other suspected gunmen remain at large.

EXCLUSIVE: Known Migrant Got-Aways Top 400K in Past Six Months

 

A Border Patrol report reviewed by Breitbart Texas shows that more than 400,000 migrants are classified as known got-aways during the first six months of Fiscal Year 2023. The report shows more than 60,000 got-aways in March.

 

Breitbart Texas obtained an unofficial Border Patrol report that indicates more than 400,000 migrants crossed the border illegally between ports of entry and were not apprehended by agents in the field. The report shows the number of got-aways in March jumped from nearly 51,000 in February to more than 60,000 in March.

 

Migrant got-aways are a conservative estimate of the number of migrants who are seen crossing the border but cannot be apprehended at the time, migrants that are part of a group that is partially apprehended, or by estimating numbers based upon tracks found in smuggling areas.

 

The estimated number of known got-aways during the first six months of Fiscal Year 23, which began on October 1, 2022, topped 400,000, the report reviewed by Breitbart News reveals. This is up by more than 30 percent over the same period in FY22 when officials estimated there were just under 300,000 known got-aways.

 

The Tucson Sector reported the highest number of got-aways. The nearly 18,000 got-aways represent a small increase over last March’s report. El Paso also leads the year-to-date numbers with more than 106,000 estimated known got-aways.

 

This is followed by the El Paso Sector (just over 15,000) and the Del Rio Sector (nearly 11,000). El Paso leads the year-to-date got-away numbers with more than 122,000 estimated known got-aways.

 

In March, Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 161,000 migrants who crossed the border between ports of entry. This, combined with the March got-aways brings the total number of known border crossers in March to more than 220,000 migrants.

After the Biden Administration directedthe National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to provide theJan. 6 Committee with White House visitor logsfrom the waning days of the Trump presidency, namely fromDecember 2020 to January 2021, NARAcomplied, according tothe GPO report. The Select Committee agreed to accept the records provided by NARA with “birthdates and social security numbers removed.”

 

Before being disbanded ahead of the new Congress in December 2022, the Select Committee sent its final report and supporting materials to GPO for online publication. On Jan. 4, 2023, it was discovered by a public news outlet that the information provided to GPO from the Select Committee contained the social security numbers of almost 2,000 visitors to the White House in December 2020. The GPO blamed the“inadvertent”error on a “perfect storm” of rushed procedures, confusion, altering publication requests, strained resources within the GPO, and the sheer volume of supporting materials provided by the Select Committee. That represents a nearly three-fold jump from expected exports of $770 billion in financial year 2022/23, he added, despite global uncertainties that make the export scenario slightly challenging.

 

India is also launching a new amnesty scheme for one-time settlement of defaults on export obligations, Sarangi said.

 

The scheme, which aims for faster resolution of trade disputes, will run until September 2023, but will not apply to cases involving fraud investigations.

 

India’s new policy will also automate some trade approvals and cut charges for medium-sized and small businesses to secure some government-backed benefits.

 

Bhagwat Karad, India’s minister of state for finance, said that the Reserve Bank of India had approved the opening of special rupee vostro accounts (SVRAs) of correspondent banks from 18 countries in 60 separate cases.

 

The countries include Botswana, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, Israel, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Russia, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.

Space Development Agency Successfully Launches Tranche 0 Satellites

WASHINGTON, DC –

SDA delivers first 10 satellites on-orbit, two-and-a-half years from award to launch

 

The Space Development Agency (SDA) today announced the successful initial launch of Tranche 0 (T0) of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), the Transport and Tracking Layer satellites that will demonstrate the low-latency communication links to support the warfighter with a resilient network of integrated capabilities, including tracking of advanced missile threats, from low-Earth orbit (LEO).

 

A SpaceX Falcon 9 reusable, two stage rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, launched the first 10 of the planned 28 satellites. Once completed, Tranche 0 will include 20 optically-connected data transport satellites and eight optically-connected missile warning/missile tracking satellites equipped with wide-field-of-view sensors. A second SDA launch of Tranche 0 satellites is scheduled for June.

 

"This is a major accomplishment for SDA and for the whole Department of Defense. It shows that our key pillars, proliferation and spiral development, can deliver for national security space," said Derek Tournear, director of SDA. "Through this launch, we've demonstrated that SDA can keep a schedule to deliver enhanced capabilities every two years. This revolutionary approach is enabled by growth in the commercial marketplace, allowing the PWSA to move forward to deliver warfighting capabilities in each future tranche."

 

The launch, originally scheduled for March 30, was delayed out of an abundance of caution to investigate technical issues with the launch vehicle. Today's T0 Launch carried 10 satellites. York Space Systems provided eight Transport and SpaceX provided two Tracking satellites. To fully populate Tranche 0, York Space Systems and Lockheed Martin will produce 10 Transport satellites each, for a total of 20 T0 Transport satellites. SpaceX and L3Harris will provide four Tracking satellites each for a total of eight T0 satellites. Tranche 0 ground support is provided by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

 

SDA awarded firm-fixed-price contracts for T0 satellites resulting in a cost of approximately $15 million per Transport satellite and is fielding the constellation approximately 30 months after authority-to-proceed on each contract.

 

The T0 demonstration constellation will fly in two orbital planes at an altitude of approximately 1,000 km. Once on orbit, the satellites must undergo a period of test and checkout of the bus and mission payloads before demonstrations can begin.

 

The constellation will serve as the warfighter immersion tranche and support military exercises, including advanced missile tracking tests, in the summer of 2023 and beyond. Tranche 0 will demonstrate the feasibility of the following:

  • Low latency data connectivity

  • Beyond line of sight targeting

  • Missile warning/missile tracking

  • On-orbit fusion

  • Multi-phenomenology ground-based sensor fusion

 

SDA plans to field the first operational generation of the PWSA, Tranche 1, beginning in late 2024. Tranche 1 will include 126 Transport - Layer satellites, 35 Tracking satellites, and 12 tactical demonstration satellites (called T1DES). Tranche 1 will be operated by SDA's groundbreaking space operations centers based heavily on commercial space operations models.

 

SDA transferred to U.S. Space Force as a direct reporting unit in October 2022. SDA brings a unique acquisition strategy that enables faster and cheaper capability delivery by designing and rapidly deploying a threat-driven resilient constellation of small satellites in LEO. SDA programs provide an integral part of the national security hybrid space architecture in the areas of communications, data transport, and missile warning.

Rising oil prices have not propped up the Russian currency

 

The Russian ruble fell to its lowest exchange rate against the US dollar since last April on the Moscow Exchange on Monday.

 

The currency slipped to 78.53 rubles to the dollar in afternoon trading, the weakest rate since late April 2022. The ruble also traded at over 85.34 against the euro.

 

The ruble weakened despite a surge in global oil prices, which gained more than 6% on Monday. This happened after the OPEC+ group of oil producing countries announced a plan to slash their combined crude output by another 1.15 million barrels per day starting from May until the end of 2023, in an attempt to stabilize the oil markets. This comes on top of Russia’s extension of its voluntary 500,000bpd cut in oil output until the end of the year.

 

Moscow cut its oil production in retaliation for an oil price cap introduced by the West, which it said would eventually result in scarce supply and trigger uncertainty in the global market.

School bus driver kissed, touched girl’s breast through her clothes, Florida cops say

 

A Florida school bus driver is accused of molesting one of his passengers, after surveillance video showed him touching and kissing one of her breasts through her clothing, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

 

The driver was identified as 57-year-old Tomas Andres Cabrera, officials said in an April 1 news release.

 

“The victim told a school district employee Thursday (March 30) that her bus driver, Cabrera, touched and kissed her left breast over her clothing,” the sheriff’s office said.

 

“Detectives, in coordination with our Youth Relations Bureau and the School District, obtained a copy of the surveillance footage from the school bus. Detectives said the footage shows Cabrera clearly and intentionally touching and kissing the victim’s left breast over her clothing.”

 

Details of the victim’s age and her school were not released.

 

Cabrera was arrested March 31 at his home in Naples and is charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 by someone 18 or older, jail records show.

 

The investigation is ongoing, officials said.

 

The Naples-based Collier County Public Schools has just under 50,000 students enrolled in 63 schools, according to Collierschools.com. Investigators did identify the schools affiliated with Cabrera’s bus route.

I agree with most of what you said, i would read the Bible with discernment because it has been edited.
