Building on the momentum from last year’s Pride Month event and other Pride events throughout the intelligence community, DIA hosted its second annual Pride Month event June 18 at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Kristin Beck, the first openly transgender retired Navy SEAL, was the keynote speaker, and the event featured a panel of military officials at DIA who addressed current issues facing the LGBT community and addressed policies affecting the community in the DOD.

DIA Director Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn’s opening remarks stressed the importance of maximizing the potential of every employee at DIA.

“I want everybody to come in every day to be their best,” Flynn said. “I don’t want people to be worrying about who they are or that somebody might say something negative. We can’t live like that.”

Fostering an inclusive and accepting environment that is comfortable and proud of its diversity has been one of the core principles for Flynn during his time at DIA. He concluded his remarks simply, but firmly: “Be proud of who you are.”

Here's why the leaked ‘secret plan’ for a Ukrainian military offensive doesn't add up

The release looks like an attempt to distract Russia's attention from what's really going on

On Friday, photos appeared of a document allegedly containing details on a planned imminent Ukrainian offensive on territories controlled by Russia. The ‘leak’ coincided with suggestions that the NATO Defender 2023 exercises – planned for the end of this month –could be a cover for an operationto supply and support Ukrainian units. However, upon closer examination, doubts arise concerning the document’s authenticity.

When did it appear?

The supposed secret plans to support an offensive by Kiev's forceshit the internet the day before Anthony Blinkenmade a statement on the subject. The US Secretary of State said the operation will begin “within a few weeks.”

What information does it contain?

There hasn't been a leak of this nature since Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine began, over 13 months ago. It is noteworthy that the published planscontain not only a schedulefor supplying Ukrainian units with NATO weapons and ammunition, butalso informationabout the structure of the brigades and battalions allegedly preparing for the offensive.

The document,dated March 1, says Kiev's brigades need 253 tanks, more than 380 infantry fighting vehicles and APCs, 480 vehicles, 147 artillery pieces, and 571 HMMWV armored vehicles to carry out the offensive.

Which information is most suspect?

The probable locations of Russian units, indicated on the combat map in red, appear to have been collected from open sources. Severalpro-Kiev resourcesthat track military operations containalmost identical information.

Also, theratios of killed and woundedfor the Ukrainian and Russian Armed Forces which initially appeared in these ‘secret plans’ havesince been changed. When first posted, the losses for the Ukrainian side were underestimated at about 16,500 –17,000 people. Then (probably to be more realistic), they increased almost fivefold, up to 65,000 – 75,000. At the same time, the numbers given for Russia's purported losses of vehicles and equipment coincide with data published by Kiev's Ministry of Defense.

What else is wrong with the published AFU offensive plans?

The blatant falsification of data on the readiness ofUkrainian military formationscatches the eye. The document states that, of the nine supposedly to be trained up to US and NATO standards by March 31 and April 30,five of Kiev's brigadeshave had zero training: these are the 82nd Airborne, the 32nd, 117th, and 118th Territorial Defense, as well as the 21st separate mechanized.

Even if only two or three companies in these brigades were trained, and self-preparation wasn't completed,their level of training couldn’t be zero. At the same time, the highest percentage of readiness was recorded only in the 47th mechanized(40%) and the 46th airborne assault (60%).

What’s the upshot?

The plan also gives perplexing figures for military equipment.

For example,out of 109 M2 BradleyBMPs sent to armed forces, for some reasononly 99 are to participatein the offensive. Moreover, the vehicles are not distributed among the brigades and onlyassigned to one formation– Kiev's 47th mechanized brigade, which doesn't have heavy tanks.

Rather than Soviet T-72s or T-64BVs, this grouping has only Slovak T-55Ss with 105mm guns,which are difficult to usein a large-scale offensive.

The small, but important, errors and inaccuracies in the calculations of equipment, the adjusted accounting of losses, as well as the presence of units with ‘zero’ readiness,indicate that this document, which was issued as a ‘secret plan,’ was probably prepared and distributed not by the military butby a group of civilians, probably pro-Kiev analysts.

The purpose of this planted misinformationmay be to underreportthe actual number of combat-ready Ukrainian units to be deployed for the offensive or to distract attention fromother events relatedto the real operation.

Twitter blocks Substack links after platform announces competing ‘Notes’ feature

Users were given the message "Some actions on this Tweet have been disabled by Twitter" when they try to retweet or like a post containing a Substack link.

On Friday, Twitter users reported issues with retweeting or liking posts that contain links to Substack, a newsletter platform.

According to NBC News, Twitter has placed restrictions on how users interact with posts containing the links, coming days after Substack announced that it would launch "Notes," a feature that closely resembles Twitter.

On the desktop version of Twitter, users were given the message "Some actions on this Tweet have been disabled by Twitter" when they try to retweet or like the post. Likes and retweets on the mobile version of the social media platform did not work.

The outlet stated that it appears that Twitter has blocked responses to tweets that include Substack links as well.

"It appeared, however, that tweets with links to Substack newsletters with a unique domain name or shortened links did function normally on Twitter," NBC reported.

In a statement to The Verge, Substack founders Chris Best, Hamish McKenzie, and Jairaj Seth said, "We’re disappointed that Twitter has chosen to restrict writers’ ability to share their work. Writers deserve the freedom to share links to Substack or anywhere else. This abrupt change is a reminder of why writers deserve a model that puts them in charge, that rewards great work with money, and that protects the free press and free speech. Their livelihoods should not be tied to platforms where they don’t own their relationship with their audience, and where the rules can change on a whim."

"Any platform that benefits from writers’ and creators’ work but doesn’t give them control over their relationships will inevitably wonder how to respond to the platforms that do," the founders wrote on Twitter.

In a post announcing Substack Notes, the three said that Notes would be a way for users to post "short-form content and share ideas with each other and their readers," and will "drive discovery across Substack."

Unlike it’s recommendations feature, "Notes will give them the ability to recommend almost anything—including posts, quotes, comments, images, and links," the trio said.

The post later added, "While Notes may look like familiar social media feeds, the key difference is in what you don’t see. The Substack network runs on paid subscriptions, not ads. This changes everything."

Matt Taibbi, one of the journalists who broke the Twitter Files and uses Substack to post articles, said in an email on Friday: "Earlier this afternoon, I learned Substack links were being blocked on Twitter. Since being able to share my articles is a primary reason I use Twitter, I was alarmed and asked what was going on.

"It turns out Twitter is upset about the new Substack Notes feature, which they see as a hostile rival. When I asked how I was supposed to market my work, I was given the option of posting my articles on Twitter instead of Substack.

"Not much suspense there; I’m staying at Substack. You’ve all been great to me, as has the management of this company. Beginning early next week I’ll be using the new Substack Notes feature (to which you’ll all have access) instead of Twitter, a decision that apparently will come with a price as far as any future Twitter Files reports are concerned. It was absolutely worth it and I’ll always be grateful to those who gave me the chance to work on that story, but man is this a crazy planet."

US Senate Probes Alleged Chinese Forced Labor in Auto Supply Chain

APRIL 7, 2023

The Senate Finance Committee is investigating U.S. and foreign auto manufacturers and suppliers for potential links to forced labor practices in China’s Xinjiang region, where Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities are allegedly being coerced into working in factories.

The investigation is taking place amid a broader U.S. crackdown on goods originating from the northwestern Chinese region. Under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act that Congress passed last year, goods made in Xinjiang cannot be imported to the United States unless importers prove that they are not made using forced labor.

The automotive supply chain came under increased scrutiny in December, when the U.K.-based Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice issued a report that found links between Chinese companies operating in Xinjiang and automakers that import parts from them.

Senator Ron Wyden, chairman of the chamber's Finance Committee, wrote to automakers and suppliers last week, telling them that the early stages of the investigation showed that automakers are heavily dependent on their direct suppliers to ensure that their supply chains are free from forced labor.

He said investigators have serious questions about whether the companies are even able to ensure their sub-suppliers in China do not rely on forced labor, partly because of the complexity of the supply chain. But he said that is no excuse.

"This complexity cannot cause the United States to compromise its fundamental commitment to upholding human rights and U.S. law," Wyden wrote.

Letters asking how Chinese supply chains are overseen went to companies including Ford, Honda, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Tesla and Volkswagen, as well as numerous major auto supply companies. The companies have until April 11 to reply, but American Honda Motor Co. Inc and Volkswagen Group of America both responded to VOA’s inquiries, as did four other auto suppliers.

Willing to address issues

The companies that responded said they are committed to adhering to U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and ensuring that their products are not produced with forced labor. They also emphasized their willingness to work with policymakers to address these issues.

Katie Deel, a spokesperson at Volkswagen Group of America, emphasized the company's "zero tolerance" policy for forced and child labor in its business.

Spokespersons for auto suppliers DENSO Corporation, Stellantis N.V., ZF Friedrichshafen AG and Continental North America all said they took the issue of forced labor seriously and would respond to the Senate committee’s request.

Chinese denials

Beijing officially denies allegations of forced labor in Xinjiang and says its labor programs are poverty alleviation measures aimed at helping ethnic minorities.

Washington says China is committing acts of genocide against the Uyghur people, including forced sterilization of women, forced labor, torture, and the arbitrary detention of more than 1 million Uyghurs and other religious minorities in state-run internment camps and prisons.

The Chinese government also has been accused of forcing individuals to participate in government-sponsored labor programs, where they are not afforded the freedom to choose whether to work.

When asked about the claims, a spokesperson for China’s embassy in Washington said the accusations were false and questioned the motives of those making them.

"The claims of 'forced labor' and 'forced sterilization' by the Chinese government in Xinjiang are a smear on China's ethnic policies and on Xinjiang's achievements in development," wrote Liu Pengyu in an email to VOA.

"The attempt by some anti-China forces and organizations to politicize human rights issues under the pretext of Xinjiang-related issues goes against people's shared aspiration. The attempt to contain China under the pretext of Xinjiang-related issues is doomed to fail."

The Bank of Japan's monetary easing was "appropriate" and effective in jolting Japan out of deflation, and its retention under new leadership is of utmost importance as inflation expectations are heightening, outgoing Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said Friday.

In his last press conference as governor, Kuroda again expressed his regret over the BOJ's failure to attain its 2 percent inflation target stably before his term ends on Saturday. But he added that goal is still nearer than when he took office in 2013. Kuroda will hand the reins to academic Kazuo Ueda, a monetary policy expert who has taken the stance that monetary easing should be in place. The outgoing governor acknowledged that the past decade of unprecedented monetary easing has had side effects but denied that the policy tool had reached its limits. Kuroda, known for taking aggressive monetary easing steps that later became known as "bazooka," made a sensational pledge in 2013 to achieve 2 percent inflation in two years and double the monetary base.

Participants in a Department of Defense training exercise at a Boston hotel entered the wrong room Tuesday and mistakenly detained a guest instead of the person assigned the role of the person to be detained, according to the FBI.

The mistake happened about 10 p.m. with the Boston Division of the FBI helping the U.S. Department of Defense in conducting the Defense Department exercise.

The exercise was meant to simulate a situation that personnel might encounter during an actual incident.

“Based on inaccurate information, they were mistakenly sent to the wrong room and detained an individual, not the intended role player,” an FBI said in a written statement. “Thankfully nobody was injured."

A Department of Defense official said the department apologizes to the person affected by the training exercise.

“The training was meant to enhance soldiers’ skills to operate in realistic and unfamiliar environments. The training team, unfortunately, entered the wrong room and detained an individual unaffiliated with the exercise,” Lt. Col. Mike Burns of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command said in a statement.

“The Boston Police Department responded to the scene and confirmed that this was indeed a training exercise. The safety of civilians in vicinity of our training is always our number one concern. We are reviewing this serious incident with our partners and no further details will be released at this time,” the statement added.

Burns declined to identify the person wrongly detained.

The FBI also called safety a priority for the agency and its law enforcement partners.

"We take these incidents very seriously,” the FBI statement added. “The Boston Division is reviewing the incident with DOD for further action as deemed appropriate.”

A spokesman for Delta Air Lines said the airline was looking to see if anyone from the airline might have been mistakenly caught up in it.

“We are looking into reports of an alleged incident in Boston that may involve Delta people," the spokesperson said in a written statement. "We have nothing further to share at this time other than to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our people.”
