MOST AMERICANS REALIZE IT'S A WITCH HUNT.

Fifty five percent of likely voters in the United States believe that the indictment and attempted prosecution of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump is “bad for America,” according to a poll conducted last week by Rasmussen Reports.

The best example of how the issue is backfiring against the left appears when voters are asked whether the indictment will make it more likely that Trump wins the 2024 election. Almost a third — 32 percent — of Democrats answered, “more likely.” Forty-two percent of likely voters said “more likely,” with 29 percent saying “less likely”.

Lawmakers Made Massive Stock Trades Amid Failure Of Multiple Banks

Apr 11, 2023

Several lawmakers made considerable bank stock trades as multiple financial institutions failed last month, according to federal disclosures.

The implosions of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, where the vast majority of account balances exceeded the $250,000 threshold backed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, prompted the government-backed company to secure all accounts at the firms last month in order to prevent additional bank runs. Assets for the two firms were respectively acquired by First Citizens Bank and New York Community Bancorp for significant discounts.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) purchased between $1,001 and $15,000 in New York Community Bancorp stock on March 17, days after she met with officials regarding the failure of Signature Bank, according to a periodic transaction report. The stock closed at $6.54 on March 17 before rising to $9.19 on March 21, two days after the acquisition was announced, and remains at $9.04 as of Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Malliotakis told The Wall Street Journal that she executed the trade at the recommendation of her financial advisor and was not aware that New York Community Bancorp was considering a purchase of Signature Bank. Malliotakis indicated in the report that her spouse had purchased the shares, even though the lawmaker is unmarried; the spokesperson said the designation was made in error and affirmed that Malliotakis would correct the form.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer’s (D-OR) wife meanwhile purchased between $1,001 and $15,000 in Silicon Valley Bank stock and sold as much as $15,000 in Bank of America stock on March 9; she likewise sold as much as $15,000 in First Republic Bank stock on March 20, according to his periodic transaction report.

Silicon Valley Bank stock fell from $106.04 on March 9 to $0.57 as of Tuesday, resulting in heavy losses for Blumenauer. Bank of America stock meanwhile fell from $30.54 on March 9 to $28.53 as of Tuesday, meaning that the lawmaker avoided losses, while shares for First Republic Bank rose from $12.18 on March 20 to $14.22 as of Tuesday. A spokesperson for Blumenauer asserted that he was not aware of his wife’s trades.

Rep. John Curtis (R-UT) executed a partial sale of between $1,001 and $15,000 in Bank of America stock on March 16, as well as a sale of as much as $15,000 in First Republic Bank stock on the same day, according to his periodic transaction report. Curtis avoided losses as share prices for First Republic Bank declined from $34.27 on March 16 to $14.25 as of Tuesday, while share prices for Bank of America remained largely unchanged.

Malliotakis and Blumenauer are each members of the House Ways and Means Committee, while Curtis sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Several prominent lawmakers, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), have been accused in recent years of leveraging their intimate knowledge about forthcoming regulations or economic tumult to purchase stocks at opportune times and mitigate losses by selling shares. As many as 97 lawmakers or their immediate family members purchased or sold assets related to their legislative committee work between 2019 and 2021, according to an analysis published last year by The New York Times.

Various legislative proposals have since called for bans on individual stock trading by lawmakers and their relatives: Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) earlier this year introduced the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments Act, also known as the PELOSI Act, while Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), and Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) introduced a similar bill last month.

Ex-firefighter gets prison for Jan. 6 extinguisher attack

A retired firefighter who threw a fire extinguisher at police officers during the U.S. Capitol riot was sentenced on Tuesday to more than four years in prison.

Robert Sanford struck two police officers in the head with the fire extinguisher that he threw as he stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, with a mob of Donald Trump supporters. He also threw an orange traffic cone at a Capitol police sergeant.

“Sanford also hurled obscenities and insults at the law enforcement officers on the Lower West Terrace, calling them ‘traitors,’” a prosecutor, Janani Iyengar, wrote in a court filing.

One of the officers struck by the fire extinguisher had a bump and swelling on his head; the other had a headache and went to a hospital for a medical exam, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman sentenced Sanford to four years and four months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, according to an online court record. Federal prosecutors had recommended a prison sentence of five years and 11 months.

Sanford, 57, of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, worked as a firefighter for 26 years before retiring in 2020. A fire extinguisher is “an instrument that he was uniquely familiar with and should have known how much damage it could cause,” the prosecutor wrote.

Here’s Every Major

Upcoming Election Republicans Should Already Be Preparing For

Pennsylvania

While the 2022 midterms resulted in Democrats gaining a one-seat majority in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, a series of special elections next month give Republicans an opportunity to take back control of the state’s lower chamber. On May 16, the commonwealth will hold elections to fill vacancies for two state House seats (Districts 108 and 163). If Republicans win both, they’ll take back control of the House.

Later this year, on Nov. 7, the commonwealth will also hold elections for a Pennsylvania Supreme Court seat, a Commonwealth Court seat, and two Superior Court seats. While a Republican victory in the state Supreme Court race wouldn’t give conservatives control of the high court, it would cut into Democrats’ current 4-2 majority. In recent years, the state Supreme Court has ruled on numerous high-profile issues such as election integrity and gerrymandering.

Primaries for Pennsylvania’s judicial elections will be held on May 16.

Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana

The states of Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana each hold elections for governor, attorney general, and other statewide offices this fall.

While Mississippi’s governor seat is occupied by Republican Tate Reeves, Kentucky’s is held by Democrat Andy Beshear, who is seeking reelection. In the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial race, Beshear barely squeaked out a win against then-GOP Gov. Matt Bevin by roughly 5,100 votes.

In Louisiana, Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards is term-limited and will not be seeking reelection. With both states overwhelmingly voting for former President Donald Trump during the 2020 election, Kentucky and Louisiana should be easy pick-ups for Republicans.

In addition to statewide executive races, Mississippi and Louisiana will also be holding elections for their respective state legislatures.

The primaries for Kentucky and Mississippi will be held on May 16 and Aug. 8, respectively. Both general elections are on Nov. 7. Louisiana — which uses a majority-vote system — will hold its primary elections on Oct. 14 and a general election on Nov. 18.

In a majority-vote system, all candidates compete in the same primary. If a candidate manages to win the primary outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote, then that candidate is declared the winner. If no candidate receives an outright majority, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election.

For example, if a Republican candidate wins more than 50 percent during Louisiana’s Oct. 14 gubernatorial race, he or she would become the next governor. If said Republican doesn’t get more than 50 percent, then that candidate and the next highest vote-getter would advance to the Nov. 18 general election.

Virginia and New Jersey

Both Virginia and New Jersey have elections for their respective state legislatures on Nov. 7.

In Virginia, Republicans are fighting to hold onto their slim majority in the House of Delegates (51-47) and potentially flip the Democrat-controlled Senate (21-18). Following Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s victory in the commonwealth’s 2021 gubernatorial race, Senate Democrats have worked to kill Republican-led initiatives tackling numerous issues such as education, energy, and election integrity.

Earlier this year, for instance, Virginia Democrats used their majority in the Senate to block the passage of Sage’s Law, a measure that would have required school officials to notify parents if their child begins to “identify” as something other than their biological sex while at school. The bill was named after a 14-year-old Virginia girl who became a victim of sex trafficking after her school concealed her gender dysphoria from her mother.

While an uphill battle given New Jersey’s blue hue, it’s not impossible for state Republicans to potentially take control of at least one chamber of the state legislature. During the state’s 2021 elections, Republicans picked up six seats in the General Assembly. Current numbers in the General Assembly would require Republicans to pick up six seats to have an outright majority.

New Jersey’s primaries are on June 6, while Virginia’s are on June 20.
