Projectile strikes residential area of Russian city near Ukrainian border (VIDEOS)

 

An unknown object has hit Belgorod, which is about 50km inside Russia

 

An unknown projectile crashed in the southern outskirts of the Russian city of Belgorod late on Thursday, leaving a large hole in the middle of a street, surrounded by residential buildings.

 

Footage circulating online shows the aftermath of the impact, which locals likened to an earthquake.

 

The exact nature of the fallen object was not immediately clear. According to local Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, it left a 20-meter crater in the street, and damaged several cars and shattered windows at buildings nearby. According to a preliminary assessment, no one was injured in the incident, the governor added.

 

The shockwave caused by the impact with the road threw a car into the air and on to a nearby one-story building.

 

The region has been repeatedly subjected to drone and missile attacks, as well as sporadic artillery shelling, by tUkrainian forces since Moscow launched its military offensive, in February of last year.

 

The attacks have claimed lives of some 30 civilians, Gladkov said earlier in the day during a meeting with local legislators. More than 120 others received various injuries, according to official figures.

K-pop star dies in apparent suicide

 

South Korean singer Moonbin has been found dead at his home by his manager

 

Moonbin, a member of K-pop boy band Astro, has reportedly been found dead at his home, becoming the latest in a long line of South Korean entertainers who died by apparent suicide.

 

Moonbin’s manager went to his apartment in the posh Gangnam district of Seoul on Wednesday evening, after being unable to contact the 25-year-old singer, and found his unresponsive body, according to reports by Yonhap News and other South Korean media outlets. Police, who found no evidence of foul play, said it appeared that he took his own life. An autopsy may be conducted to confirm his exact cause of death.

 

“Moonbin suddenly left us and became a star in the sky,” the singer’s management agency, Fantagio Group, said in an announcement. “It is incomparable to the sorrow of the bereaved families who left their beloved sons and brothers, but all Astro members, Fantagio colleagues and executives and employees are deeply mourning the deceased in such great sadness and shock.”

 

A funeral for Moonbin will be held “as quietly as possible,” with only family, friends and company colleagues attending, the agency said. “I sincerely ask you to refrain from speculative and malicious reports so that the bereaved families, who are deeply saddened by the sudden sad news, can reverently commemorate and greet the deceased.”

 

Moonbin was best known as a member of Astro, one of South Korea’s most popular music groups. He started his entertainment career as a child actor and model, debuting at age 11. He and another Astro member, Sanha, formed a subunit in September 2020 that has released three EPs – the latest in January. One of the tracks, called ‘Madness’, has surpassed 12 million views on YouTube.

 

The singer reportedly took a break from performing in parts of 2019 and 2020, citing his health. Such K-pop stars as Sulli, Goo Hara and Jonghyun have been found dead in recent years in confirmed or suspected cases of suicide. Sulli took her own life in October 2019, reportedly because of online bullying.

 

South Korea has the highest youth suicide rate among developed nations, ranking atop the 36-member Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Around 13,300 South Koreans – a rate of 26 for every 100,000 people – took their own lives in 2021, according to government data.

Oscar winner calls for Russia to boycott Academy Awards

Moscow should focus on creating its own Eurasian alternative instead, Nikita Mikhalkov says

 

There is “no point” in nominating Russian-made movies for an Oscar given the current state of the Academy Awards, believes iconic Russian filmmaker and director of Moscow International Film Festival, Nikita Mikhalkov.

 

“We see what gets Oscars nowadays, we see how [the award] has changed. Sending in [films] just to keep hope – I personally do not see any point in doing this,” Mikhalkov said during a media briefing on Thursday. The director did not elaborate which Oscar-winning movies exactly he had in mind.

 

Mikhalkov, who is one of Russia’s most prominent directors and holds an Oscar and two Golden Lions from the Venice film festival, among other awards, suggested Moscow shouldfocus on creating an alternative to the US-based awardsinstead. Namely, Russia shouldspearheadthe creation of aEurasian Academy, the director suggested.

 

“In a certain sense, it would be a counterbalance to the Oscars. These are the countries of the SCO [Shanghai Co-operation Organization], BRICS.

 

This would be a very expensive award, which would be given every year in different countries,” Mikhalkov stated.

 

Mikhalkov has long advocated the idea of creating an alternative to the Oscars, with the idea receiving renewed attention amid the ongoing standoff between Russia and the collective West. The director floated the idea during the first Eurasian Economic Forum last May, stating that only films corresponding to “the ideals that we formulate, and not those movies which destroy the very essence of humanity” would be considered.

Smash Mouth: Hunter Biden Lawyer Accuses IRS Whistleblower of Committing Felony by Disclosing “Information About an Ongoing Tax Investigation”

 

Chris Clark, one of the attorneys representing first son Hunter Biden in a federal investigation of Biden’s tax and business dealings, accused the IRS whistleblower who has alleged political interference into the tax investigation of committing a felony by disclosing “information about an ongoing tax investigation.”

 

The smash mouth tactic is likely to be seen as an effort to intimidate the whistleblower and any others contemplating stepping forward.

 

Clark had initially declined comment when news of the whistleblower broke on Wednesday, reported CBS News, “Chris Clark, an attorney for Hunter Biden, declined to comment.”

 

Clark provided a statement to NBC News on Thursday (excerpt):

 

Hunter Biden’s attorney said Thursday that the IRS whistleblower could be improperly disclosing private tax information and attempting to abuse the power of the government to harm the president’s son.

 

“It is a felony for an IRS agent to improperly disclose information about an ongoing tax investigation. The IRS has incredible power, and abusing that power by targeting, embarrassing, or disclosing information about a private citizen’s tax matters undermines Americans’ faith in the federal government,” Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, told NBC News in a statement. “Unfortunately, that is what has happened and is happening here in an attempt to harm my client. It appears this IRS agent has committed a crime, and had denied my client protections that are his right.”

 

Clark, a former federal prosecutor who has also represented billionaires Mark Cuban and Elon Musk, recently left high-powered Latham & Watkins to form a boutique firm in New York City.

Fair enough. I guess my only objection is that both of them seem like they could be controlled opposition. Malone, to his credit, has come out strong against the vax, similar to how Breggin has come out strong against pharmaceuticals.

 

I suppose, given Malone's history and this bullshit lawsuit, that he's the more likely suspect.

A quadriga is a car or chariot drawn by four horses abreast and favoured for chariot racing in Classical Antiquity and the Roman Empire until the Late Middle Ages. Quadrigas were emblems of triumph; Victory or Fame often are depicted as the triumphant woman driving it. Stratasys, CollPlant to first produce breast implants using Stratasys’ P3 bioprinter and CollPlant’s bio-inks derived from collagen, designed to replace silicone implants by regenerating breast tissue without eliciting an immune response

 

Israel-based Stratasys – a 3D printing manufacturer, and CollPlant – a regenerative and aesthetic medicine company, announced a joint development of plant-based technologies for tissue regeneration and organ manufacturing.

 

The initial project of the Rehovot-based companies is to produce breast implants using Stratasys’ P3 bioprinter and CollPlant’s bio-inks derived from collagen. The implants are designed to replace silicone implants by regenerating breast tissue without eliciting an immune response.

 

Stratasys CEO Yoav Zeif said the partnership with CollPlant “will enable us to accelerate the industrialization of bioprinting for regenerative medicine, and we look forward to the successful commercialization of CollPlant’s novel regenerative breast implants and beyond.”

CollPlant CEO Yehiel Tal said the company is “excited to collaborate on this transformative initiative.”

“We believe that our rhCollagen-based regenerative implant has the potential to overcome the challenges of existing breast procedures that use silicone implants or autologous fat tissue transfer,” he added.

Bank Bailout Facility Usage Rises First Time Since SVB, MM Fund Outflows Soar

 

After last week saw The Fed's balance sheet shrink significantly back from its bank-bailout resurgence, all eyes will be back on H.4.1. report this evening to see if things have continued to 'improve' or re-worsened amid regional bank shares unable to bounce above post-SVB lows ahead of earnings. In a big surprise, this week saw a $68 billion OUTFLOW from Money Market funds - the largest since July 2020 (after $380 billion of INFLOWS over the previous five weeks)…The breakdown was $58.9 billion from Institutional funds and $9.72 billion from retail funds.

 

That pulled assets from their $5.277 trillion record high and suggests last week's deposit INFLOWS may be about to accelerate - good news for banks? Added to last week's deposit inflows, this suggests - in the short-term - the banking crisis is easing (at least in the minds of investors). However, it's never that easy, as BofA noted earlier, it's that time of year again when corporations pull cash from MM funds to pay taxes. In 2022, the 3rd week of April saw $41.6bn of institutional outflows from MM funds. In 2021, the same period was institutional outflows of around $19.6 billion. 2020 was a COVID shitshow, but 2019 saw a $42.3 billion withdrawal. So this year's $59.8 billion institutional outflow is significant in its size compared to the last few years (but the seasonal tax-driven nature of the outflow should counter any over-excitement for now). (and since the NYFRB Reverse Repo Facility is still well over $2T a night they would be right imo)

The most anticipated financial update of the week - the infamous H.4.1. showed the world's most important balance sheet shrank for the 4th straight week last week, by $21.5 billion, slightly more than last week's tumble (helped by a $17bn QT)…(this "QT" is just maturing bonds on the sheet…it's not doing a thing..it would habben no matter who owns them)

 

Looking at the actual reserve components that were provided by the Fed, we find that Fed backstopped facility borrowings ACTUALLY ROSE last week from $139 billion to $144 billion (still massively higher than the $4.5 billion pre-SVB)-Cap#4…but the composition shifted, as usage of the Discount Window rose by $1.6 billion to $69.9 billion (upper pane Cap#5) along with a $2.1 billion increase in usage of the Fed's brand new Bank Term Funding Program, or BTFP, to $73.98 billion (middle pane) from $79.0 billion last week. Meanwhile, other credit extensions - consisting of Fed loans to bridge banks established by the FDIC to resolve SVB and Signature Bank were unchanged at $173BN (lower pane)..Scanning down the H.4.1, we note that Foreign repo was down $10BN to $20BN (though it is still troubling that some bank still needs this much USD) and Other Fed Assets rose $2.2 billion (after falling last month) With the MM outflows, deposit inflows, and Fed balance sheet shrinking again, it appears the 'banking crisis' is over… and with it goes the hopes for equity bulls that The Fed will ease away from its inflation mandate… be careful what you wish for here as with clarity comes fortitude and The FedSpeak recently has almost all sung from the same hymnal - higher for longer, inflation still too high… not the massive loosening-fest the market is hoping for in H2 2023.

 

We will simply have to wait and see to know if these outflows are "real" of simply the usual tax-driven withdrawals.

Attorneys: Charge to be dropped against Alec Baldwin in fatal ‘Rust’ shooting case

 

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – According to Alec Baldwin’s legal team, the involuntary manslaughter charge against the actor will be dropped soon. However, we don’t know if prosecutors could refile charges against him.

Baldwin’s attorneys issued the following statement:

“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident.”

Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” in October 2021. Hutchins died shortly after the shooting while Souza survived his injuries.

Baldwin was facing an involuntary manslaughter charge. In February, prosecutors downgraded certain charges against him, removing a firearm enhancement penalty. The enhancement charge would have added an additional five-year minimum sentence on top of everything else.

The film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is still facing involuntary manslaughter.

There is a status hearing scheduled for Friday in the case. Heather Brewer, a spokesperson for the special prosecutors on the case, said she could not comment on the case.

Blinding flash over kyiv was probably meteor, says Ukraine space agency

A mysterious flash which lit up skies over Ukraine's capital on Wednesday night generated much speculation.

 

Officials in kyiv initially suspected it was a Nasa satellite falling to Earth but the US space agency told the BBC it was still in orbit.

 

Ukrainian space officials said later the flash had probably come from a meteor entering the atmosphere.

 

The air force was confident it was not a Russian air attack - an event all too familiar since the invasion last year.

 

The bright glow was observed in the sky over the capital around 22:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

 

An air raid alert was activated but "air defence was not in operation", the head of kyiv's military administration, Serhiy Popko, said on Telegram.

 

Mr Popko suggested it was caused by a Nasa space satellite falling to Earth, referring to a retired 300kg (660lb) spacecraft that the space agency announced was set to re-enter the atmosphere on Wednesday.

 

The RHESSI satellite, used to observe solar flares, was launched into low Earth orbit in 2002 and decommissioned in 2018, Nasa said.

 

But Rob Margetta from Nasa's office of communications told the BBC that the satellite was still in orbit at the time the flash was observed, and was due to re-enter Earth's atmosphere during the night.

 

Satellite-tracking website Satflare indicated that RHESSI was nowhere near Ukraine at the time.

 

Ukrainian social media has been awash with theories and memes about what the flash could have been, with a popular theme being that it was caused by aliens.

 

But air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian TV that the flash had also been seen over neighbouring Belarus to the north and Ukraine's space agency said it was probably related to a cosmic body entering the dense layers of the atmosphere.

 

kyiv officials said it was up to experts to establish what it was but what was most important was the city's security.

Tennessee House Republican resigns after violating General Assembly discrimination, harassment policy

 

As lawmakers filed into the House chamber after a lunch break on Thursday, the desk of former Rep. Scotty Campbell sat empty, the characteristic lawmaker name plate missing from its front.

 

Campbell, R-Mountain City, resigned from the General Assembly in a sudden move Thursday, less than two hours after he told The Tennessean he had no plans to step down from a Republican caucus leadership position over a harassment policy violation.

 

House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, confirmed Thursday afternoon Campbell had issued a letter of resignation after an ethics subcommittee last month found Campbell had violated a workplace discrimination and harassment policy.

 

"Discrimination and harassment in any form will not be tolerated," the subcommittee memo states.

 

According to the memo, its findings were addressed to Sexton on March 29. The Tennessean has requested further comment from Sexton's office on when he was made aware of Campbell's violation and whether Sexton pursued any internal sanctions against Campbell before the memo was publicized.

 

Initially, there were no public repercussions for Campbell, the Republican Caucus vice chair, in the three weeks since the subcommittee issued their findings.

 

The memo was first reported by NewsChannel5, which reported at least one legislative intern complained of alleged sexually harassing communications from Campbell.

 

As the story broke inside the House chamber on Thursday right before lawmakers took a lunch break, Campbell sat at his desk with his head down.

 

He later declined to comment on the accusations that led to the ethics complaint and said he did not "at this point" have plans to resign.

 

"I have no comment in accordance with the General Assembly's policy," Campbell said.

 

Campbell never returned to the House chamber after walking out.

 

House GOP Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison, R-Cosby, told The Tennessean he had "just found out about" the ethics finding on Thursday morning and would need to review the details before passing judgment.

 

"This is all hypothetical that I'm answering right now, but if you have behaved in such a way that a bipartisan group has found you guilty, that's a problem," Faison said.

 

The House Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Subcommittee falls under the Ethics Committee and reviews confidential complaints in closed meetings. Rep. Pat March, R-Shelbyville, chairs the subcommittee. Democratic Reps. Karen Camper of Memphis and Bill Beck of Nashville sit on the subcommittee, along with Rep. Sam Whitson, R-Franklin.

 

Under the legislature’s harassment policy, an internal investigation must begin immediately after the complaints are received. The investigation would have led to a report, which would have been provided to the four-member House Ethics Subcommittee.

 

The subcommittee meeting convened at a fraught time in the Tennessee House, just two days after the deadly Covenant School shooting that sparked days of highly charged gun reform protests on the Capitol. Days later, House Republicans moved to expel three Democratic lawmakers who broke House rules to briefly lead a gun reform protest on the House floor.

 

It was an unprecedentedly political expulsion vote, as the House had not expelled a member since the 2018 expulsion of Rep. Jeremy Durham, R-Franklin, over sexual misconduct allegations involving nearly two dozen women.

 

In February 2017, Rep. Mark Lovell, R-Eads, left office while facing allegations of sexual harassment. Lovell, who was a freshman lawmaker, was later found to have violated the legislature’s harassment policy.

 

In 2019, Knoxville Democratic Rep. Rick Staples stepped down from a leadership position after the subcommittee found he violated the policy.

Fox News Parts Ways With Weekend Host Dan Bongino

 

Dan Bongino, one of the most right-leaning hosts in the Fox News stable, is leaving the network after the Fox Corp.-backed outlet and he could not come to terms on a new contract.

 

“Folks, regretfully, last week was my last show on Fox News on the Fox News Channel,” Bongino said on his podcast Thursday. “It’s tough. It’s tough to say that. You know, I’ve been there doing hits and working there for ten years…so the show ending was tough. And I want you to know it’s not some big conspiracy. I promise you. There’s no acrimony. This wasn’t some WWE brawl that happened. We just couldn’t come to terms on an extension.

 

Bongino, who joined Fox News as a contributor in 2019, began hosting the Saturday-night program “Unfiltered With Dan Bongino” on Fox News in 2021.

 

His departure, previously reported by Forbes, comes just days after Fox Corp. agreed to pay $787.5 million in a settlement to Dominion Voting Systems after being accused of defaming the ballot-technology company by passing along specious conspiracy theories about its role in the 2020 presidential election. Bongino was not a prominent part of the trial or slated to testify, but has been known to amplify dubious controversies, such as taking on policies that mandate getting a coronavirus vaccine, or telling social-media followers that Democrats were trying to orchestrate a coup during the 2020 presidential election.

 

“We thank Dan for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors,” Fox News said in a statement. The networks intends to air “Lawrence Jones Cross Country” in place of Bongino’s program Saturday night, while filling 10 p.m. with an encore of the weekday 11 p.m. program “Gutfeld!” Fox News plans to unveil a new schedule in coming weeks.

 

Bongino described the exit as amicable. “I really enjoyed myself there and you know they were good to me for ten years. I mean they allowed me to do a show called ‘Unfiltered,’ did what we wanted to do over there and covered the topics we wanted to cover. And it’s a sad day. It’s a sad day,” he said. “They did give me the opportunity to do one last show. I don’t want you to think they like, showed me the door, that’s on me, not on them. But I just thought it was best to kind of go this way for now. Like I said, it’s not acrimonious. I have a great team over there.”

 

Bongino is one of the most popular pundits in conservative-media circles. He has bona fides from his work as a New York City police officer and a long run as an agent for the U.S. Secret Service.

 

He has also hosted popular radio programs, and his show was used to replace the long-running show hosted by Rush Limbaugh. Bongino’s one-hour radio show for Westwood One also ran on the Fox Nation streaming service, but will no longer appear.

EU state bans WW2 victory celebration

Marking the triumph over Nazi Germany would “undermine our values,” Latvian lawmakers said

 

The Baltic state of Latvia has outlawed any celebrations, this year, of the Soviet Union’s WW2 victory over Nazi Germany. Its capital city, Riga, has been the site of marches honoring the Waffen-SS in recent years.

 

The parliament in Riga fast-tracked the measure on Thursday, banning rallies, marches, picketing and use of fireworks on May 9 (the traditional day of celebration), unless it is to support Ukraine.

 

“It is in our interests to prevent events that undermine our values, split society, glorify military aggression and contribute to false coverage of historical events,” said Ieva Brante, chair of the legislature’s human rights commission.

 

Only activities dedicated to “Europe Day” will be allowed under the new law, which is intended to “protect the interests of state and public security, prevent unrest, protect the health and morals of the population.”

 

This would allow expressions of solidarity with Ukraine, glorification of the EU, or anything the Latvian government designates as non-threatening to its national interests.

 

The news did not take Moscow by surprise. Last year, Riga designated May 9 the ‘Day of Remembrance’ for Ukrainian soldiers and civilians and authorized the destruction of monuments to Soviet soldiers.

Andrey Lugovoy, a member of the Russian State Duma, told reporters on Thursday, when asked about the news.“Where every year they hold a ‘parade’ of Latvian Waffen-SS legionnaires, and this year proposed to name a street or a square after them. That Riga?”

 

“Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, they’re too far gone. These statelets don’t only bite the hand that fed them, but try to defecate in the corners as well,” he added.

 

The three Baltic states were part of the Russian Empire before declaring independence in 1918, and of the Soviet Union in 1940-41, and again between 1945 and 1991. Upon declaring independence, all three states insisted the Soviet period amounted to illegal occupation, and glorified those who collaborated with Nazi Germany as patriots.

 

Latvia joined the EU and NATO in 2004, along with its Baltic neighbors.

 

About a quarter of its 1.8 million residents are Russian-speakers, who often face discrimination.

Man created ‘deepfake’ porn of former classmates using their old photos, prosecutor says

 

A man created “deepfake” pornography using old social media photos of over a dozen women while they were in middle school and high school, a prosecutor said.

 

Patrick Carey, 22, of Seaford in Long Island, New York, posted the explicit images involving the women’s faces to a pornographic website, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office in New York.

 

In sharing the photos, he encouraged strangers to “harass and threaten them with sexual violence” while sharing the women’s phone numbers and where they lived, officials said.

 

Many women were Carey’s former school classmates, WABC-TV reported.

 

A judge sentenced Carey to six months in prison and 10 years probation with sex offender conditions on April 18, District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced in a news release. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender.

 

“Carey targeted these women, altering images he took from their social media accounts and the accounts of their family members and manipulating them using ‘deepfake’ technology,” Donnelly said in a statement.

 

“These incredibly brave women pieced together his depraved conduct and brought it to the authorities,” Donnelly added. “They were not afraid, and they were undeterred.”

 

Carey previously pleaded guilty to several charges, including promotion of a sexual performance by a child, second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime, second-degree stalking and endangering the welfare of a child in December, the release said.

 

Family members of the victims were not satisfied with Carey’s sentencing, according to WABC-TV.

 

“He didn’t get what he deserved,” one family member told the outlet.

 

In New York state, there are no laws regarding those who create sexually explicit “deepfakes,” according to Donnelly.

 

Because of this, Donnelly proposed the “Digital Manipulation Protection Act” that aims to prosecute “sexual predators and child pornographers” who make these images, she said.

 

The women targeted by Carey went to MacArthur High School in Levittown, according to the district attorney’s office.

 

Some of them said they learned Carey “screenshotted” their social media photos after getting notifications from the unspecified platforms, according to the release.

 

An investigation revealed Carey posted the “deepfake” images — which show the victims’ faces on the bodies of other women engaged in sex acts — by using three different usernames from August 2019 until September 2021, the release said.

 

Carey was arrested in September 2021 and found with multiple photos of the victims after a search of his phone, tables, social media and online accounts, according to the district attorney’s office.

 

In court, Carey apologized for his actions, News 12 Long Island reported.

 

His potential motive in targeting his former classmates wasn’t specified by Donnelly in the release.

 

“Deepfake” technology “can be used to make people believe something is real when it is not,” Peter Singer, a cybersecurity and defense-focused strategist and senior fellow at New America think tank, told CNBC in an October 2019 interview.

Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch on Wednesday announced it had received records from the Department of Health and Human Services showing that the National Institutes of Health granting funding for experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that sought to create mutant coronavirus variants.

 

Included in the documents were the initial grant application from EcoHealth Alliance and its annual reports. Those documents described work with the WIV as seeking to "predict the capacity of our CoVs [coronaviruses] to infect people."

 

Included in the "specific aims" section is a discussion of "[t]esting predictions of CoV inter-species transmission."

 

The group received a $3.3 million grant for its "Understanding the Risk of Coronavirus Emergence" project, which ran from October 2013 through September of 2018. In 2014, EcoHealth received almost $3.1 over five years from the NIH for "Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence."

 

Records also show that the NIH later granted additional funds to the WIV in July 2020, at the height of the pandemic.

 

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton indicated that the documents supported the idea that U.S. funding for coronavirus research may have directly contributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

"A review of these and other documents strongly suggest that U.S. funding in China and elsewhere for mutant virus, gain-of-function research may have been responsible for the emergence of the COVID pandemic in Wuhan," he said. "This gain-of-function scandal should be the subject of criminal investigations."

TD Spots a Red Flag Not Seen Since 2007 Coming for the Corporate Bond Market

 

Last month’s banking drama means a technical tidal wave may be coming for the biggest slice of the $10 trillion market for corporate bonds. That’s according to TD Securities, where analysts are predicting that banks’ collective higher cost of funding will curb appetite for higher-quality credit and eventually force a spike in risk premiums.

 

At issue are shrinking yields on investment-grade bonds relative to the effective federal funds rate, a proxy for funding costs. This “carry spread” has now reached levels seen only twice before in the past 27 years — the last time being in 2007.

 

That means that even though high-quality corporate bonds might look “cheap” based on their mark-to-market values, which have plummeted over the past year as interest rates spiked, the higher cost of funding these positions could still curtail bank purchases and eventually force a move higher in spreads.“The US recession we forecast in the final quarter of the year, along with the recent collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse, has heightened the risk of a correction in the US investment-grade corporate bond market,” says Cristian Maggio, TD’s head of portfolio and ESG strategy. “Tighter lending conditions ahead may act as a catalyst for this correction.”

 

While banks aren’t the largest investors in the corporate bond market, they do play an important role in facilitating trades and providing liquidity for other investors. To do so, banks have to allocate precious regulatory capital and balance sheet — something which is becoming both more scarce and expensive in the aftermath of March’s banking collapses and a wider flight in deposits.

 

So even though banks own just 7% of outstanding corporate bonds, according to TD’s estimates, they could still drive a correction in credit risk premiums that are low by historical standards. Maggio estimates that carry spreads are now just 23 basis points, marking the third-tightest level in data that begins in 1996. “Banks are important in this context as their sensitivity to interest rates may pressure US investment-grade corporate yields to correct,” Maggio says. “While unfunded investors (a large share of the market) may be content with a modest yield pick-up over Treasuries, liquidity providers need margins large enough to beat their internal funding costs.”“Against this backdrop, the widening of credit spreads we anticipate is necessary to re-balance the market and address pressure from the increasingly exhausted carry trade.”

Bush, Obama, Clinton Team Up with American Express to Fly Migrants into American Communities

 

A non-governmental organization (NGO) founded by former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama and backed by a litany of multinational corporations is teaming up with American Express to fly migrants into the United States.

 

The NGO, called Welcome.US, was initially launched to work with President Joe Biden’s administration in resettling some 85,000 Afghans across the U.S. in 2021 and 2022, as Breitbart News reported extensively at the time.

 

For its Afghan operation, the NGO helped fly close to 20,000 Afghans to American communities funded by millions raised from donations and supported by corporate backers like Walmart, Airbnb, the New York Times, the Business Roundtable, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Starbucks, the Washington Post, Goldman Sachs, Goodwill Industries, Microsoft, and Chobani.

 

The NGO also has ties to billionaire George Soros, as members of his Open Society Foundation sit on the group’s “National Welcome Council.”

 

Now, the NGO is teaming up with the open borders group Miles4Migrants as well as American Express Global Business Travel to fund flights to American communities for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Nicaragua.

 

“Donations are needed to fund the flights for newcomers to travel to the United States,” the initiative’s webpage states:

During a Senate committee hearing this week, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) estimated that the Biden administration has welcomed close to five million border crossers and illegal aliens to the United States since taking office in early 2021. This figure includes those released into the U.S. interior, known got-aways, and unknown got-aways.

UNICEF: Coronavirus Pandemic Was a ‘Disaster for Childhood Immunization’

 

A study published on Thursday by the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF found a dramatic global decline in public support for childhood vaccination in the years of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, corresponding to the “largest sustained backslide in childhood immunization in 30 years.”

 

UNICEF’s annual State of the World’s Children report for 2023 described the coronavirus pandemic as a “disaster for childhood immunization.”

 

“It set immunization back to levels last seen in 2008. In just two years, the world lost more than a decade’s progress in ensuring every child is adequately immunized,” the report detailed, attributing the regression to “some issues specific to the pandemic, particularly the impact of lockdowns and service disruption.”

 

“The pandemic interrupted childhood vaccination almost everywhere, especially due to intense demands on health systems, the diversion of immunization resources to [Wuhan coronavirus] vaccination, health worker shortages and stay-at-home measures,” UNICEF explained in a press release announcing the publication of the report.

 

The agency documented 67 million children around the world missing routine vaccines – including longstanding immunological products to combat diseases such as polio and measles – between 2019 and 2021. Of these, 48 million children were identified as “zero-dose,” meaning they have not received a single vaccine dose in their lives.

 

The UNICEF report identified measles and polio as particularly alarming diseases for children to remain unvaccinated for.

 

“In 2022, for example, the number of measles cases was more than double the total in the previous year. The number of children paralysed by polio was up 16 per cent year-on-year in 2022,” the agency detailed. “When comparing the 2019 to 2021 period with the previous three-year period, there was an eight-fold increase in the number of children paralysed by polio, highlighting the need to ensure vaccination efforts are sustained.”

 

The report identified “stay-at-home” orders from governments as part of the problem, as they “may have led some parents to see routine vaccination as non-essential care” or scared parents into thinking that visiting a clinic for vaccinations would expose their children to Wuhan coronavirus infections. Another concern was the body of reports indicating that the pandemic overextended healthcare systems, so as to make access to non-coronavirus related care more difficult to obtain.

Investigators: Gunmen fired into crowd at Sweet 16 party

 

DADEVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Investigators said five people charged in a deadly shooting at Sweet 16 birthday party had fired guns into the crowd at the celebration.

 

Investigators wrote in court documents filed Thursday that they believe the five were present at the party and “discharged firearms into the crowd” resulting in the deaths of four people. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced two additional arrests on Thursday, for a total of five people facing facing reckless murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting.

 

The shooting at the Sweet 16 birthday killed four young people, ranging in age from 17 to 23 and shocked the small east Alabama city of Dadeville. Besides the four slain, 32 others were injured, four of them critically. The party, at a dance studio just off the town square, was in full swing when gunfire erupted. Investigators have not discussed a motive or what they believe led to the shooting.

 

Tyreese “Ty Reik”, 17, of Tuskegee and Travis McCullough, 16, of Tuskegee were arrested Tuesday. Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20, of Auburn, was arrested Wednesday. and Johnny Letron Brown, 20, of Tuskegee and Willie George Brown Jr., 19, of Auburn, were arrested Thursday. All are charged with four counts of reckless murder, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.

 

The district attorney said the teens will be tried as adults as required by Alabama law when anyone 16 or older is charged with murder.

 

All of the suspects are being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail with no bond.

 

The birthday girl’s brother, 18-year-old Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell of Camp Hill, died as his sister knelt beside him begging him to keep breathing. He and another fatal victim, 17-year-old Shaunkivia Nicole “KeKe” Smith of Dadeville, were high school seniors. Also slain were Marsiah Emmanuel “Siah” Collins, 19, of Opelika, and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23, of Dadeville.

Americans who were Facebook users from May 24th, 2007 to December 22, 2022, can now apply for a share of the $725 million class-action settlement with Facebook.

 

The claim deadline is August 25th, 2023.

 

A recently started website informing Americans on the settlement and how to apply said, “The only way to receive a cash payment from this Settlement is by submitting a timely and properly completed Claim Form that obtains approval from the Settlement Administrator.”
