An Awakening is a natural or induced coming to consciousness or awareness of the surrounding metaphysical reality. The exit from the matrix is accompanied by a profound leap of consciousness, an augmentation of awareness, which to be sustained must be balanced.

 

What advertisers and shills do is an effort to unbalance the forces within us. Advertisers use our emotional imbalance to influence our buying. Shills try to generate hate by a creating a mirrored reciprocal response, and by convincing us freely expressing hatred of others is normal, natural and rational for human beings.

Mr. President,

In recent months we have been witnessing the formation of two opposing sides that I would call Biblical: the children of light and the children of darkness. The children of light constitute the most conspicuous part of humanity, while the children of darkness represent an absolute minority. And yet the former are the object of a sort of discrimination which places them in a situation of moral inferiority with respect to their adversaries, who often hold strategic positions in government, in politics, in the economy and in the media. In an apparently inexplicable way, the good are held hostage by the wicked and by those who help them either out of self-interest or fearfulness.

These two sides, which have a Biblical nature, follow the clear separation between the offspring of the Woman and the offspring of the Serpent. We will also discover that the riots in these days were provoked by those who, seeing that the virus is inevitably fading and that the social alarm of the pandemic is waning, necessarily have had to provoke civil disturbances, because they would be followed by repression which, although legitimate, could be condemned as an unjustified aggression against the population. The same thing is also happening in Europe, in perfect synchrony. It is quite clear that the use of street protests is instrumental to the purposes of those who would like to see someone elected in the upcoming presidential elections who embodies the goals of the deep state and who expresses those goals faithfully and with conviction. Texans Light Up the Night With Drones, 700-Foot Eagle, Giant Astronaut—Here’s How They Do It

 

Dinosaurs in the sky. Astronauts looming like skyscrapers overhead. Batman in the clouds. With the advent of drones, pyrotechnics has seen advances that are simply mind-melting.

 

Days ago, Seattle’s Space Needle came alive in lights with a floating 3D version of said iconic tower during MLB’s All-Star Week. In other cities, drones have conjured Super Mario Bros over San Diego and UFOs over Roswell. The celebratory night sky will never look the same.

 

Earlier this month, July Fourth saw a show for the record books, as the airspace over Dallas, Texas, was lit up with drones. There was the mega homage to George Washington crossing the Delaware and 700-foot eagle gripping a giant American flag; but the 1,002-drone light show also clinched the Guinness World Record for the “largest aerial sentence formed by multirotor/drones.”

 

“Happy 4th of July 2023” was spelled out in drones displaying red, white, and blue in the skies over North Richland Hills.

 

And the pyrotechnics geniuses behind it? DFW’s own Sky Elements Drone Shows.

 

Fireworks once set the bar for the pyrotechnics that have long wowed American audiences—be they during Super Bowl Sunday, New Year’s Eve, or the Fourth of July. Yet, in just the last decade, the proliferation of drones has introduced the world to a new kid in town.

 

Once mere task robots and package deliverers for Amazon, these manually-controlled or autonomous laborers of the skies have been programmed to perform animated dances, decked out in lights. The choreographer’s imagination is basically the only limiting factor.

 

Having performed over 600 drone shows across the United States and beyond, Sky Elements is among the nation’s forerunners in the drone show business. Pioneers in the field, they explain how said giant astronaut waves his colossus hand; how a 700-foot bald eagle flaps its wings; how all those hundreds, even thousands, of drones fly together in perfect synchronization.

 

“This is a novel application of technology that currently exists,” Rick Boss, president of Sky Elements, told The Epoch Times.

 

Drones that were employed to survey infrastructure were originally developed to “fly a specific mission multiple times by computers rather than by hand.” These could be used to survey pipelines, scan farmers’ fields, or take magnetic readings over a lake—all following computer-controlled missions that do not deviate.

 

Then, Mr. Boss said, as multiple drones started flying missions, someone apparently had a thought: “‘Hey, maybe I can put lights on those and turn it into some type of art!’

 

“All this was happening only nine years ago.”

 

Of course, flying preset missions is one thing; synchronizing an army of drones together in flight would require absolute precision and accuracy, down to a centimeter.

 

Today’s real-time kinematics, or RTK, satellite tracking—the kind Google places in your phone and that’s used in car GPS systems—is what made that level of accuracy possible. “Google wants to be more accurate so they can track exactly where you are and sell you more stuff,” Mr. Boss said. “All that has driven the technology, and we’re taking advantage of using a novel application of that technology.”

 

Thus, a rift opened in the market. And where there’s an opening, someone will fill the need. Programmers created drone show software based on the foregoing infrastructure platforms, and before we knew it, we had trailblazers like Sky Elements—who ran their own fireworks company before this and still do—show up on the scene.

 

They started hiring 3D digital animators to put together grand productions to supplement their services. “The bulk of our animators have come from 3D games [backgrounds],” Mr. Boss said. “We simply put out a job posting.

 

“They animate every dot from start to finish, and then it’s output into what we call ‘paths.’”

 

Thus, deploying a drone armada, each programmed to fly separate missions independently, a grand, synchronized light show would unfold via something that looks quite like a 3D animation tool on a computer. During a show, individual drones are neither aware of the others nor the overarching picture.

 

Yet, drones have concrete limitations in the physical world—battery life, how fast their motors can move them, how deftly they can maneuver, not to mention dealing with crosswind—so things get a whole lot more complex than simple programming. “The animator has to know the physical limitations of the drone,” Mr. Boss said. They must “understand the medium of the art.”

 

Take that giant astronaut waving his hand, for example. The drones moving at the tips of his fingers must travel much faster than those at the elbow. The artist can only move that hand as fast as those fingertips can fly and change directions. The artist must bear in mind a set of limitations throughout.

Meanwhile, several factors in the drones—their speed, their lights, and the need to compensate for deviations caused by wind—all eat up battery life. So, each show can only go for so long. “About 15 minutes,” Mr. Boss said. “Drones can fly longer than that if we had perfect conditions and we knew exactly what the weather was going to be that night.”

 

Be that as it may, already Sky Elements is pushing the limits of what’s possible in drone shows. Take last April Fools’ Day, for example, where they accomplished a 75-minute drone show using interchanging sorties to fly a 60-minute countdown clock in the skies over Austin—before launching a 300-foot QR code for their big April Fools’ Day gag (we won’t spoil the surprise here!).

 

Today, they’re still pushing the limits by testing flying drones faster—as much as 15 percent faster. And they also have another ace up their sleeve; Mr. Boss made us privy to an upcoming “interactive platform” where there is “audience interaction with the drone itself.”

 

We had to ask him what he meant by that, and what “interactive” looks like, exactly.

 

“That’s all you’re getting from me!” the Texan business owner said, chuckling, adding that he wouldn’t divulge what gives him an edge on the competition.

FBI exposes its own agents in contract probe – NYT

The FBI used code names in its dealings with the offending contractor, suggesting it knew the rules had been broken

 

The FBI has acknowledged it was responsible for a widely-reported violation of US federal policy prohibiting the use of spyware tools manufactured by Israeli vendor NSO Group, best known for thePegasus spyware used to snoop on journalists, human rights activists and other innocent civilians in dozens of countries, the New York Times reported on Monday.

 

After being ordered by the White House in April to investigate which US federal agency violated its executive orders by doing business with the banned vendor, the agency found it was to blame – or rather its contractor, Riva Networks, was.

 

A senior FBI official told the Times the agency had merely given Riva a handful of Mexican phone numbers to track, claiming they were wanted fugitives and that the agency believed Riva was using a geolocation tool of its own devising. Riva, several US officials claimed, had the ability to exploit vulnerabilities in Mexican cellular networks in order to covertly track users.

 

Riva was instead using an NSO spyware tool called Landmark, which tracks the location of individuals based on the cell phone towers their phones are communicating with. Riva had renewed its contract with the Israeli spyware purveyor in 2021 without informing the FBI, the official claimed, explaining the agency had informed all of its contractors that same year that they were forbidden from using NSO products, in keeping with the Biden administration's declaration.

 

The official claimed the FBI only became aware Riva was using Landmark earlier this year, and that no data from Landmark was ever passed back to the agency – based on Riva’s own reports to the FBI, which would presumably not have included any mention of using an illegal spyware tool.

 

Despite the FBI’s pleas of ignorance, the agency had authorized Riva to acquire NSO’s most infamous product, Pegasus, just a few years before. Further throwing the agency’s claims into question, the cover name used for Riva in the Pegasus purchase, Cleopatra Holdings, was used again when Riva purchased Landmark from NSO. Riva CEO Robin Gamble even used the same pseudonym, William Malone, to sign both contracts, two people familiar with the deals told the Times.

 

The FBI is not the only US government agency contracting with Riva; the company has been paid by the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Defense, and several others.The White House did not seem particularly energized to punish the federal contractorfor violating its much-hyped crackdown on zero-click spyware, declining to comment when asked by the Times whether any penalties would be forthcoming.

 

While NSO’s Pegasus was initially prohibited from hacking US numbers, it later developed a workaround called Phantom, which the FBI eagerly snapped up in 2019 but claims to have never used.

Germany repeats objection to long-range missiles for Ukraine

Delivering such weapons to Kiev is not Berlin’s “top priority,” the country’s defense minister has said

 

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Thursday again ruled out delivering sophisticated long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, citing “obvious” concerns over such a move.

 

“We continue to believe that this is not our top priority right now,” Pistorius said while speaking to reporters during a visit to a mountain infantry brigade in Bavaria. Berlin’s concerns over supplying such “special range”weaponry were “obvious,” he said, pointing out Washington’s own reluctance to provide Kiev with longer-range systems.

 

“Our American allies are not delivering these cruise missiles either,” Pistorius stated.

Swedish-German Taurus KEPD 350 cruise missiles are air-launched munitions that boast a massive 500kg warhead and can travel a distance of over 500km (310 miles), according to official data.

 

Berlin has been reluctant to supply Kiev with long-range weaponry despite the repeated demands by top Ukrainian officials. Last month, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz explained that Kiev might use such munitions to strike deep into Russian territory, which would result in a major escalation.

 

“We carefully check all the requests we receive. But for us there is a principle that I share with the US president –we do not want the weapons we supply to be used to attack Russian territories,” Scholz stated.

 

Over the course of the ongoing conflict, which broke out in February 2022, Germany has been among the few Western nations reluctant to meet all of the ever-growing Ukrainian demands for increasingly sophisticated weaponry. Early this year, however, Berlin gave in to mounting pressure and allowed re-exports of German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and also delivered a number of them from its own stocks.

 

Moscow has repeatedly urged the collective West to stop “pumping” Ukraine with assorted weaponry, arguing that doing so will only prolong the conflict and inflict more damage on the country rather than change its ultimate outcome. A significant amount of Western-supplied hardware, including Leopard 2 tanks and US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, has been destroyed in recent weeks after Kiev launched its much-heralded counteroffensive, which has thus failed to yield any tangible result.

Niger junta scraps military ties with France – AFP

 

Niamey will respond to any “aggression” by the West or ECOWAS, the generals said

 

Niger’s National Council for Safeguarding the Homeland on Thursday denounced the military pact with France and warned the neighboring African states not to intervene, according to AFP. The junta assumed power in a military coup last week.

 

General Abdourahamane Tiani said that Niger will “immediately” suspend all military cooperation agreements with France, including the deal under which Paris has deployed around 1,500 troops in the Sahel country.

 

Earlier in the day, on the 63rd anniversary of Niger’s independence from Paris, Tiane’s junta blocked the signal of French broadcasters France 24 and Radio France Internationale (RFI), again according to AFP.

 

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued an ultimatum to Niger to restore the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum by Friday or face a military intervention. Niger’s southern neighbor Nigeria has already begun mustering troops on the border, according to local media.

 

A Nigerian delegation flew into Niamey on Thursday for talks with Tiani’s junta. It was led by Abdulsalami Abubakar, a retired general who headed Nigeria’s own military government in 1998-99. Another delegation was dispatched for talks with Algeria and Libya, both of which have signaled support for the new government in Niamey.

 

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu issued a statement that he instructed both delegations to do “whatever it takes to ensure a conclusive and amicable resolution of the situation in Niger.”

 

Mali and Burkina Faso have said that they would consider any invasion of Niger an act of war against themselves. Senegal, however, announced on Thursday that it would join an ECOWAS intervention against Niamey.

 

“It is one coup too many,” said Foreign Minister Aissata Tall Sall.

 

The junta “rejects all sanctions and refuses to yield to any threat, wherever it may come from,” Tiani said in a televised speech on Wednesday. “If they [ECOWAS] pursue their destructive logic to the end, may Allah watch over Niger and ensure that this is the final great battle we will fight together for a true independence of our nation.”

House committee probing Chinese tech theft from Iowa farmers

House lawmakers are digging into the theft of critical technology from Iowa farmers as part of a growing examination of American research stolen by China.

 

House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party lawmakers visited Iowa on Thursday to learn about China’s agricultural-tech espionage efforts.

 

Rep. Mike Gallagher, Wisconsin Republican and the committee’s chairman, said America must prioritize protecting technology residing in Iowa’s cornfields as much as it does Silicon Valley’s research labs.

 

“The U.S. technological ecosystem is a bucket that currently has massive holes in the bottom and we continue to pour billions and billions of R&D dollars into it every year,” Mr. Gallagher said.

 

“We need to plug these holes, we could do it with export controls, research security, outbound capital restriction, but for whatever reason we’ve chosen not to,” he said.

 

Mr. Gallagher said China’s theft of research and innovation does not harm CEOs and lobbyists as much as it does farmers, servicemembers, and other Americans going about their daily lives.

 

While Chinese espionage may more commonly be associated with military targets or disruptive digital hacks, the country’s theft of intellectual property has extended into the agricultural realm.

 

In 2016, Mo Hailong was sentenced to three years in prison for conspiring to steal trade secrets from American seed corn companies.

 

The Chinese businessman was spotted digging up hybrid seeds in an Iowa cornfield years earlier and was arrested, while others fled before they could be jailed.

 

Speaking from Tama County where Mr. Mo was discovered, lawmakers sounded the alarm that China remained interested in agricultural technology.

 

Rep. Ashley Hinson, Iowa Republican, said China’s theft of seeds harms every Iowa farmer who pays for agricultural research, buys the resulting seeds for fields and then harvests crops to feed and fuel Americans.

 

“These high-tech seeds are among the most tightly guarded trade secrets in the industry. The Chinese Communist Party has these right in their targets,” Ms. Hinson said at a roundtable event with Iowans.

 

In the decade since Iowans first spotted Chinese businessmen crawling in their cornfields, farmers have grown more vigilant.

 

Will Cornelius, the vice president of Cornelius Seed, told the lawmakers people working in the seed industry are aware but the wider public has yet to catch on to China’s interest in America’s farms.

 

“I learned just the other day that one of our employees was part of that team that found those guys 10 years ago,” Mr. Cornelius said, referring to the Mo case. “It’s just if you see something out of place, say something and speak up.”

Russia points to ICC ‘murder mystery’

The Foreign Ministry in Moscow has pulled back the curtain on British involvement in politicized indictments

 

The UK has destroyed the reputation of the International Criminal Court by outright buying its “war crimes charges” against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

 

“I love random coincidences in geopolitics. They have a certain kind of flair, just like Agatha Christie [mysteries],” Zakharova wroteon Telegram. The author of the plot with the “politicized and legally null and void” ICC indictments against Putin and children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova is also British, she argued, but “judging by everything, a rookie one.”

 

The Hague-based tribunal issued warrants for the arrest of Putin and Lvova-Belova in March, accusing them of “unlawful deportation of population (children)” from Ukraine.

 

Zakharova offered a sequence of events that, according to her,demonstrate that the government in London was behind the indictments and the warrants. First, the “Anglo lobby” took control of the court, by replacingthe Congolese judge Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua with Oxford graduate Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez of Costa Rica, on February 21.

 

To secure “total control,” however, on the same day the British authorities released from prison Imran Ahmad Khan, a disgraced former member of Parliament convicted of pedophilia, after serving less than half his sentence. He also happens to be the brother of Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the ICC.

 

Khan filed his motion for “arrest warrants” on the following day, February 22. According to Zakharova, “One gets the impression that Khan himself did not believe London and was waiting for confirmation of their promise to release his pedophile brother from prison.”

 

When the judges hesitated, on March 13 London announced a donor conference for the ICC, scheduled for March 20, “transparently hinting to the ICC that if they wanted to see UK funds, they had to show results by that deadline.”

 

“Judges are easy to buy,”quipped Zakharova, noting that the ‘indictments’ were made public four days later. “Decisions by the ICC are a cheap show, entirely bought and paid for with British money.”

 

Moscow has dismissed the ICC warrants as null and void, pointing out that it has no jurisdiction in Russia. Apple fined for first time over prohibited content in Russia

 

The Tagansky Magistrate’s Court in Moscow has for the first time decided to issue an administrative fine to Apple for failing to delete information prohibited in the Russian Federation, TASS news agency reported on Thursday.

 

According to a verdict delivered by Judge Timur Vakhrameev, Apple Distribution International has been found guilty of committing an administrative offense and has been sentenced to pay a fine of 400,000 rubles ($4,200).

 

The judge noted that the amount the American corporation has been ordered to pay was lowered below the minimum fine for such a violation after taking into account the arguments presented in court by Apple’s legal team.

 

According to court documents presented during the hearing, Apple was accused of failing to remove applications and podcasts that contained incorrect information about Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, as well as information that was “aimed at involving minors in illegal activities in order to destabilize the political situation in the Russian Federation.”

 

While the verdict marks the first time Apple has been held accountable for failing to delete prohibited information in Russia, the American corporation had previously also lost several legal cases related to antitrust violations and been ordered to pay hundreds of millions of rubles in fines.

 

In February, Apple paid a fine of 906 million rubles ($9.6 million) in a lawsuit that was initiated by Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), accusing the tech giant of restricting competition in its AppStore after it “unfairly” rejected Kaspersky Lab’s parental control program.

Developing domestic brands must be of the utmost importance, the president has said

 

Russian officials should swap their internationally produced cars for domestic brands to give the country’s industry a boost, President Vladimir Putin has proposed.

 

Speaking at a meeting with leaders of Russia’s manufacturing industries on Thursday, Putin revealed several ministries and other government agencies had asked him to continue procuring foreign cars for administrative use.

 

“I told them that this is absolutely out of the question. All officials in the country should use domestically produced cars,” the president insisted.

 

While recognizing that, in some respects, Russian cars might be “more modest” than their international competitors, Putin noted that this was “not a big deal, on the contrary, it is even better this way.”

 

“All of our magnificent officials must understand that we must strive for the development of domestic brands and cars,” he added.

 

According to Putin, Russia should not reject imports entirely, but the country should be able to produce some basic items on its own.

 

Russia has been on a campaign to phase out foreign imports since 2014, when Western countries first imposed sweeping sanctions after the Crimean peninsula overwhelmingly voted to join Russia following a coup in Kiev. Moscow ramped up its efforts in the sector after being hit with additional Western restrictions over the Ukraine conflict, with Putin claiming in May 2022 that Russia had achieved success in key industry spheres.

 

The new Western restrictions also triggered a mass exodus of foreign carmakers from Russia, with domestic producers also experiencing difficulties due to disruptions in the supply chain. However, according to the Autostat agency, foreign-made cars still dominate the Russian market, with Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia remaining the most popular.

 

That being said, Russian business outlet RBK on Thursday reported that AvtoVaz – the country’s biggest car producer – doubled its sales this year compared to 2022. In June, a senior Russiancustoms official also pointed out that imports of Chinese cars had tripled from January to Maycompared to the same period last year.

NASA’s Trio of Mini Rovers Will Team up to Explore the Moon

Working together without direct human input, three rovers each the size of a carry-on bag will map the lunar surface in 3D, using cameras and ground-penetrating radar.

 

NASA is sending a trio of miniature rovers to the Moon to see how well they can cooperate with one another without direct input from mission controllers back on Earth. A teamwork-minded experiment to demonstrate new technology, the CADRE (Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration) project marks another step the agency is taking toward developing robots that, by operating autonomously, can boost the efficiency of future missions. And, by taking simultaneous measurements from multiple locations, the rovers are meant to show how multirobot missions could potentially enable new science or support astronauts.

 

Currently slated to arrive aboard a lander in 2024 as part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative, CADRE’s three small rovers will be lowered onto the Reiner Gamma region of the Moon via tethers. Each about the size of a carry-on suitcase, the four-wheeled rovers will drive to find a sunbathing spot, where they’ll open their solar panels and charge up. Then they’ll spend a full lunar day – about 14 Earth days – conducting experiments designed to test their capabilities.

 

“Our mission is to demonstrate that a network of mobile robots can cooperate to accomplish a task without human intervention – autonomously,” said Subha Comandur, the CADRE project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “It could change how we do exploration in the future. The question for future missions will become: ‘How many rovers do we send, and what will they do together?’”

 

Mission controllers on Earth will send a broad directive to the rovers’ base station aboard the 13-foot-tall (4-meter-tall) lander. Then the team of little robots will elect a “leader,” which in turn will distribute work assignments to accomplish the collective goal. Each rover will figure out how best to safely complete its assigned task.

 

“The only instruction is, for example, ‘Go explore this region,’ and the rovers figure out everything else: when they’ll do the driving, what path they’ll take, how they’ll maneuver around local hazards,” said JPL’s Jean-Pierre de la Croix, CADRE’s principal investigator. “You only tell them the high-level goal, and they have to determine how to accomplish it.”

The rovers will face several tests – all within view of a monitoring camera on the base station atop the lander. The first is to drive in formation and stay on course using ultra-wideband radios to maintain their relative positions while relying on sensors to avoid obstacles. In a second experiment, the rovers will each take a path of their own choosing to explore a designated area of about 4,300 square feet (400 square meters), creating a topographic 3D map with stereo cameras. The project will also assess how well the team would adapt if a rover stopped working for some reason. Success will indicate that multirobot missions are a good choice for exploring hazardous but scientifically rewarding terrain.

 

And while CADRE isn’t focused on conducting science, the rovers will be packing multistatic ground-penetrating radars. Driving in formation, each rover will receive the reflection of radio signals sent by the others, creating a 3D image of the structure of the subsurface as much as 33 feet (10 meters) below. Together they can gather more complete data than can current state-of-the-art ground-penetrating radars like the one on NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, RIMFAX (Radar Imager for Mars’ Subsurface Experiment).

 

“We’ll see how multiple robots working together – doing multiple measurements in different places at the same time – can record data that would be impossible for a single robot to achieve,” Comandur said. “It could be a game-changing way of doing science.”

 

Working Smart

 

But there’s more to CADRE than testing autonomy and teamwork capabilities: The rovers also need to survive the harsh thermal environment near the Moon’s equator, which poses a challenge for such small robots. In the searing sunlight, the rovers could face midday temperatures of up to 237 degrees Fahrenheit (114 Celsius). Made with a combination of commercial off-the-shelf parts and custom-built components, the rovers must be robust enough to make it through the daytime heat while being compact and lightweight.

 

At the same time, they need to have the computing power to run the JPL-developed cooperative autonomy software. It’s a difficult balance: The project’s rovers and base station get their brain power from a small processing chip (the next generation of the cellphone-class processor inside NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter), but using the processor contributes to the heat.

 

To prevent the rovers from cooking, the CADRE team came up with a creative solution: 30-minute wake-sleep cycles. Every half-hour, the rovers will shut down, cooling off via radiators and recharging their batteries. When they simultaneously awaken, they’ll share their health status with one another via a mesh radio network (much like a home Wi-Fi network) and once again elect a leader based on which is fittest for the task at hand. Then off they’ll go for another round of lunar exploration.

XRISM Mission Ready To Explore Universe’s Hottest Locales

Japan’s XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, pronounced “crism”) observatory, expected to launch Aug. 25 (Aug. 26 Japan local time), will provide an unprecedented view into some of the hottest places in the universe. And it will do so using an instrument that’s actually colder than the frostiest cosmic location now known.

 

“XRISM’s Resolve instrument will let us peer into the make-up of cosmic X-ray sources to a degree that hasn’t been possible before,” said Richard Kelley, NASA’s XRISM principal investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We anticipate many new insights about the hottest objects in the universe, which include exploding stars, black holes and galaxies powered by them, and clusters of galaxies.”

 

A new NASA infographic illustrates the enormous range of cosmic temperatures. At the bottom of the scale is absolute zero Kelvin, or 459.67 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (minus 273.15 Celsius).

 

The detector for XRISM’s Resolve instrument is just a few hundredths of a degree warmer than this. It’s 20 times chillier than the Boomerang Nebula – the coldest-known natural environment – and about 50 times colder than the temperature of deep space, which is warmed only by the oldest light in the universe, the cosmic microwave background.

 

The instrument, a collaboration between NASA and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), must be kept so cold because it works by measuring the tiny temperature increase created when X-rays strike its detector. This information builds up a picture of how bright the source is in various X-ray energies – the equivalent of colors of visible light – and lets astronomers identify chemical elements by their unique X-ray fingerprints, called spectra.

 

“With current instruments, we’re only capable of seeing these fingerprints in a comparatively blurry way,” said Brian Williams, NASA’s XRISM project scientist at Goddard. “Resolve will effectively give X-ray astrophysics a spectrometer with a magnifying glass.”

 

XRISM’s other instrument, called Xtend, developed by JAXA and Japanese universities, is an X-ray imager that will perform simultaneous observations with Resolve, providing complementary information. Both instruments rely on two identical X-ray Mirror Assemblies developed at Goddard.
