Rwandan genocide survivors unhappy with UN court ruling

The 88-year-old war crimes suspect Felicien Kabuga is to be suspended indefinitely due to health issues

A group of Rwandan genocide survivors has criticized a UN court ruling that ordered the release of an alleged financier of the massacre, Felicien Kabuga, because he is unfit to stand trial.

Judges at the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) on Monday directed the war crimes trial of 88-year-old Kabuga to be suspended indefinitely after medical examinations revealed last month that he suffers from dementia.

The IRMCT also dismissed plans for an alternate trial procedure for the former businessman for his purported involvement in the genocide, during which extremist Hutu factions killed more than 800,000 minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus within a span of 100 days.

Naphtali Ahishakiye, the executive secretary of the group representing genocide survivors, expressed disappointment with the tribunal’s verdict on Tuesday, saying they are “extremely angry.”

“The ruling to potentially release Kabuga is a deliberate insult to the deep wounds that genocide survivors suffer,” Ahishakiye told AFP.

Francine Uwamariya, a genocide survivor who said she had lost her entire family in the massacre, argued that the trial should have gone ahead even without Kabuga.

“He was the planner and financier of the genocide. The court appears to be on the side of the killer when it should be neutral,”Uwamariya is quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Kabuga was arrested in France in May 2020 after evading justice for nearly three decades. He was charged with inciting the mass killings through his broadcaster, Radio Television Libre des Milles Collines (RTLM).

He has been on trial since late 2020. However, in March, The Hague Court agreed to pause his trial while his health was evaluated.

In June, the war crimes court proposed setting up an alternative procedure for Kabuga's prosecution that would have allowed evidence to be heard without the possibility of a conviction after determining that he was unwell.

On Monday, the appeal court judges rejected the proposal, with IRMCT chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz calling for the ruling to be “respected, even if the outcome is dissatisfying.”

Ahishakiye responded by saying the group was considering cutting ties with the criminal court due to the outcome of Kabuga’s case.

Biden family received money from Russia – Congress

House Republicans say the president’s son Hunter sold favors and havepublished receipts

The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday published receipts showing Hunter Biden, the son of current US President Joe Biden, receiving money from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan by trading on the family name.

The committee says it has identified $20 million in payments from foreign sources to Hunter Biden’s company, which they describe as a front to sell access to the “Biden network”while his father was Barack Obama’s vice-president (2009-2017).

“During Joe Biden’s vice presidency, Hunter Biden sold him as ‘the brand’ to reap millions from oligarchs in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. It appears no real services were provided other than access to the Biden network, including Joe Biden himself. And Hunter Biden seems to have delivered,” said committee chair James Comer, a Kentucky Republican.

The third bank memo Comer has published so far shows a February 14, 2014 wire transfer from “Russian oligarch Yelena Baturina” to Rosemont Seneca Thornton, a shell company run by Hunter Biden and his business partner Devon Archer. Of the $3.5 million wired by Baturina, $1 million was transferred directly to Archer, while the rest was used to start up Rosemont Seneca Bohai, a new account used to receive more funding from abroad, the committee said.

Another memo shows that Biden and Archer were both appointed to the board of directors of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian gas company run by Mykola Zlochevsky, for $1 million each per year. Burisma had previously paid Biden as counsel, but invited him and Archer to the board after a meeting hosted by Zlochevsky and Burisma corporate secretary Vadim Pozharsky in the spring of 2014 at Lake Como in Italy.

“Then-Vice President Joe Biden visited Ukraine soon after their first payments,” the committee noted, and Hunter claimed that the visit showed “value” that he provided to the company.

The third notable transaction took place in April 2014, when “Kazakhstani oligarch” Kenes Rakishev wired $142,300 to Rosemont Seneca Bohai. The very next day, the company paid Hunter Biden the same exact amount for a sports car. Hunter had met Rakishev at a Washington, DC hotel in February.

DHS Identifies 311 Child Victims Of Sexual Exploitation

Over 300 minors and victims of sexual exploitation have been identified by more than a dozen international law enforcement groups who employed high-tech facial recognition technology to identify them.

On July 17th, investigators combed through a vast display of sexually explicit internet content that targeted children, much of it on the dark web and some dating back decades. From there, law enforcement made probable identifications of approximately 311 child victims.

This was known as the three-week “surge” or “Operation Renewed Hope.” Authorities also confirmed the rescue of other minor victims who had been subjected to continuous abuse.

Even though investigators had been struggling to identify the recorded child victims, new face recognition and artificial intelligence (AI) technology has provided the team with new leads in these previous cold cases.

Detectives forwarded their new leads to the appropriate local law enforcement agencies once they narrowed down a scene or provisionally identified a victim.

More than 100 leads were sent by the operation to the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) field offices and 25 cooperating nations. Some individuals have already been detained in Canada and in the United States.

Mike Prado, deputy assistant director of the HSI Cyber Crimes Center, spoke on the operation with press reporters.

“The results of Operation Renewed Hope exceeded our wildest expectations in the sense of being able to identify children who have been abused for, in many cases, years,” Prado stated. “Images enhanced via AI or machine learning can provide our agents and investigators a starting point to begin an investigation or in some cases give us a tentative identification where we’re sending leads out to the field to confirm the identity and rescue a child.”

According to Prado, the investigators used context cues to geolocate the data and identify potential victims and offenders, such as the flora and fauna in the images and the species of birds singing on the video.

He stated that in one instance, police were able to pinpoint a particular campground, then a victim, and finally an abuser thanks to the species of fish detected that the young boy was holding in a photograph.

Victims are offered compassionate care, tools to deal with their trauma and suffering, and the chance to testify in cases against their abusers. Prado explained that some of the victims, who were only infants or toddlers when the abuse first began and are now adults, never received any counseling or other assistance.

SIERRA COUNTY, N.M. – A historic space launch is set for Thursday at New Mexico’s Spaceport America, the first with only civilian passengers.

KOB 4 got a rare inside look at the facility in Sierra County on Wednesday, seeing the flight simulator the pilots use and mission control. Very few people outside of employees have seen those highly-restricted areas in the state-of-the-art facility.

This will be the second commercial spaceflight in southern New Mexico for Virgin Galactic and the first without research.

There will be three civilian customers, including a mother-daughter duo who won a lottery. They will be the first people from the Caribbean to go to space.

“I’m hoping to give myself that confidence to try new things,” the 18-year-old daughter said.

For these astronomy buffs, it’s living out a childhood dream.

“Hopefully this will inspire other people as well. Take your dreams back out, conquer your fears and go get them,” the mother said.

The third passenger is an 80-year-old former Olympian from England, who’s also battling Parkinson’s.

“It just shows you this attitude, ‘Space for all,’ is a wonderful attitude,” he said.

Rigorous training has prepared them for the launch, and three minutes of weightlessness. The flight is set to last about 90 minutes.

The event is getting worldwide attention. Media members from all over the world are in New Mexico to see it.

It’s a part of British billionaire Richard Branson’s goal to make space travel accessible for everyone. He’s making use of the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars that went into the Spaceport.

Economic experts say the industry could have a positive impact on New Mexico, including in nearby Truth or Consequences.

There are 800 people on Virgin Galactic’s waitlist, and ticket prices are now at almost half-a-billion dollars.

The goal is to do tourism flights once a month, build up to 400 each year – and to let the public watch.

The launch is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.

Meet the crew of Virgin Galactic's 2nd commercial spaceflight

Virgin Galactic has announced the crew for its second commercial spaceflight. Galactic-02 is scheduled to fly a three-person crew, plus the Virgin Galactic astronaut instructor who trained them, plus two company pilots, on a flight to suborbital space on Thursday (Aug. 10).

Virgin Galactic's launch system involves a double-fuselage airplane, which carries the smaller SpaceShipTwo vehicle, VSS Unity, as a payload. VMS Eve, the carrier plane, takes off from a runway at Virgin's Spaceport America, in New Mexico, and flies to around 50,000 feet (15,000 meters), before dropping VSS Unity, which fires its rocket motor to climb the rest of the way to space.

Galactic-01, Virgin's first commercial mission, flew a trio from Italy's Air Force and National Research Council. That group was able to perform a handful of science experiments during their few minutes of weightlessness. Galactic-02 will be slightly less science-focused, but it is breaking ground in a number of other ways.

A fundraiser through the nonprofit organization Space for Humanity selected a winner for a seat on a Virgin Galactic flight as part of the organization's mission to increase space's accessibility to people worldwide. Thanks to this contest, the first mother-daughter duo will fly to space on Galactic-02. The mission will also carry a former Olympian to the final frontier for the first time.

Jon Goodwin is a former British olympian, who was part of the canoeing team at the 1972 games in Munich. Now, at 80 years old, Goodwin has lived with a Parkinson's diagnosis for the last nine years, but says he doesn't let it slow him down.

Since his diagnosis, Goodwin has continued an active lifestyle. Among other adventures, he climbed up, and then cycled down, Mount Kilimanjaro. Now, he will become the second person with Parkinson's to fly to space.

"When I got diagnosed with Parkinson's, I thought, 'Well, that's it, they're not going to accept me any longer,'" he said during a Virgin Galactic interview, referring to his perceived prospects of flying with the company. Goodwin appreciates Virgin Galactic's approach to space, and the idea that it's for everyone.

"The fact that I am now one of the three of the first commercial trips to go into space, and with suffering with Parkinson's for nine years, just shows you this attitude of 'space for all' is a wonderful attitude," Goodwin said.

Keisha Schahaff won her seat on the Galactic-02 crew as a part of a fundraising competition from Space for Humanity. Part of the organization's mission is to share the perspective of space, and the cognitive phenomenon known as the overview effect, with as diverse a range of humanity as possible.

Schahaff is 46 and has lived in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda her whole life. She says her love of the stars led her on a journey to Buddhism, and, ultimately, to a career as a health and wellness coach. Her contest winnings included a second ticket, which she gifted to her daughter, Anastatia Mayers. The two will be the first people from the Caribbean islands to fly to space, fulfilling a lifelong dream for them both.

"The way I see this whole act of space traveling, or space accessibility and development — it's truly not an egoistical adventure. It's an adventure of humility and humanity. And just bringing everybody together under this one umbrella, understanding that this is for all of us," Schahaff said during a Virgin Galactic interview.

Anastatia Mayers, daughter of Keisha, is an 18-year-old student at Aberdeen University in the United Kingdom. She studies philosophy and physics and is grateful her mother chose her as her spaceflight companion, even though she jokes that she gave her no choice.

"She was talking to one of her friends about the possibility of going to space, and she offered them a seat to come with her. I turned around, and I looked at them and I was like, 'What do you mean, can she come with you?! Obviously, it will be me! If anyone is gonna get to go to space with you, it will be me.' And although I said that jokingly, I was definitely serious. And she took me seriously, thank god," Mayers said in a Virgin Galactic video.

Mayers wants to be an astrobiologist, which she says seemed completely out of reach for a long time. Now, studying at university and also heading to space, Mayers' goals appear attainable.

"That thought seemed like it was so big, and almost so impossible that I really didn't think I would ever have the opportunity to pursue it […] I think it's so beautiful that Virgin Galactic's mission is to expand this to civilians, to normal people, to people who have an idea and haven't yet put that idea into place," Mayers said.

Beth Moses earned her astronaut wings with Virgin Galactic in 2019, when she became the first woman to fly aboard a commercial space vehicle, according to Virgin Galactic. Moses is Virgin's astronaut 002 and serves as the company's chief astronaut instructor.

Moses was responsible for training the Galactic-02 crew and will accompany the trio on their flight. This mission will be Moses' fourth flight to space with Virgin Galactic.

Sitting inside the cockpit for VSS Unity will be Galactic-02 commander C.J. Sturckow and mission pilot Kelly Latimer. Both are seasoned pilots, with years of experience at NASA as well as at Virgin Galactic.

Sturckow became a NASA astronaut in 1995 and has four space shuttle missions under his belt, including STS-88, which was the first shuttle flight to the International Space Station. He retired from NASA in 2013 and joined Virgin Galactic the same year. Sturckow was also in the cockpit for Virgin Galactic's first flight to space, in 2019.

Latimer served as a research pilot at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center, where she gained thousands of hours flying dozens of aircraft. Latimer flew in the cockpit of the Cosmic Girl carrier plane during Virgin Orbit's first successful satellite launch in 2021. (Virgin Orbit, a sister company of Virgin Galactic, filed for bankruptcy this past April.)

Manning the cockpits of VMS Eve for Galactic-02 are commander Nicola Pecile and pilot Mike Masucci.

Pecile has logged more than 7,700 flight hours in 170 different types of aircraft, and he flew VSS Unity on his first visit to space during the Galactic-01 mission. Before his time with Virgin Galactic, Pecile served in the Italian Air Force as a lieutenant colonel.

Masucci served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force before he joined Virgin Galactic. He sat at the helm of VSS Unity during the Galactic-01 mission.

Neither Pecile nor Masucci will reach space on Thursday; VMS Eve heads back to Earth for a runway landing after releasing VSS Unity.

Virgin Galactic is planning to livestream Thursday's launch on its website. During Galactic-01, the company said that Galactic-02 would kick off a roughly monthly cadence of launches moving forward, so Galactic-03 could potentially fly as soon as mid-September.
