He pounded his fist on the table and said he’d lived in six countries and Canada was the best in the world.”

Michael Chomiak was a lawyer and journalist before the Second World War, but “they knew the Soviets would invade western Ukraine (and) fled … and, like a lot of Ukrainians, ended up after the war in a displaced persons camp in Germany where my mother was born.”

Everyday attention was given to economic and cultural life, and especially to the support of the German war effort. In 1943 and 1944, both Lvivski Visti and Krakivski Visti hailed the German-approved formation of the 14th Waffen SS Division Halychyna, composed of Ukrainian volunteers. Ukrainians prefered [sic] to see this formation, especially at the end of the war, as a nucleus for a future Ukrainian Army, calling it the First Ukrainian Rifle Division.

 

The 1941 tragedy hit them and the rest of the Western Ukrainian population hard: they have lost either relatives or people whom they knew in the massacre. Two years later, when the UCC [Ukrainian Central Committee] campaigned for the Waffen-SS Division Galizien, which was reflected in Krakivski Visti, many young Galician Ukrainian men enlisted because images of the prison murders from summer 1941 — which was their first exposure to the Soviet mass brutality — became entrenched in their minds.

President Donald Trump late Friday again slammed Michael Wolff over his incendiary book on the Trump administration’s turbulent first year, tweeting that the author “made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book.”

 

“Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book.

He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job.

Now Sloppy Steve has been dumped like a dog by almost everyone. Too bad!”

 

the president tweeted shortly after praising a tweet from Sen. Rand Paul pledging to introduce a bill to end aid to Pakistan.

 

Trump’s tweet contained a doctored image of the cover of Wolff’s book displaying quotes criticizing Wolff’s writing and calling him “liar and phony,” which had been circulated earlier in the day by the GOP’s official Twitter account.

Trump joined Republican congressional leaders at Camp David on Friday to plot the party’s 2018 midterm agenda, as the media focused in large part on salacious tales recounted by Wolff in his book,

“Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” which went on sale earlier in the day.

 

Trump claimed Thursday night that he had not authorized White House access for the book, warning readers to “look at this guy’s past,” an apparent dig at Wolff’s credibility, and referring to Steve Bannon, his former chief strategist, as “sloppy Steve.”

 

“I authorized Zero access to White House (actually turned him down many times) for author of phony book!

I never spoke to him for book,” the president wrote on Twitter Thursday night. “Full of lies, misrepresentations and sources that don’t exist. Look at this guy’s past and watch what happens to him and Sloppy Steve!”

Trump’s assertion that he never spoke to Wolff for the book seems to contradict information from White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who said the president did once speak to Wolff,

albeit briefly and not in a formal interview setting.

 

Wolff’s book has put the Trump administration on the defensive this week, pushing back against embarrassing passages in the book that paint the president as ignorant, impulsive, narcissistic and inept and his West Wing disorganized and backbiting.

Sanders has said the book is ridden with falsehoods and is “complete fantasy and just full of tabloid gossip.”

 

And while Wolff is a well-known writer, his new book has resurfaced old questions from some about his journalistic practices. Sanders complained Thursday that Wolff’s book contained

little mistakes indicative of sloppy work, such as writing that White House communications director Hope Hicks is 26 years old when she is actually 29.

 

In the days since excerpts of the book began to surface, the most notable consequence has been a wedge seemingly driven between Trump and Bannon over remarks attributed to the latter in the book.

According to Wolff, Bannon called a summer 2016 meeting between Trump campaign leadership and a Russian attorney promising Kremlin-sourced incriminating information on Hillary Clinton as “unpatriotic” and “treasonous.”

Bannon, who is also quoted making derisive and dismissive statements about the president, has not denied any of the comments.

 

Trump responded to Bannon’s words in the book with a scathing statement, declaring that the former chief strategist had “lost his mind” when he left the White House.

 

The president also tweeted later Friday morning that the “Mercer Family recently dumped the leaker known as Sloppy Steve Bannon. Smart!”

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Valerie Solanas, Radical Feminist Who Shot Andy Warhol

 

She made daring arguments in “SCUM Manifesto,” her case for a world without men. But it was her attack on Warhol that came to define her life.

 

On June 3, 1968, Valerie Solanas walked into Andy Warhol’s studio, the Factory, with a gun and a plan to enact vengeance. What happened next came to define her life and legacy: She fired at Warhol, nearly killing him. The incident reduced her to a tabloid headline, but also drew attention to her writing, which is still read in some women’s and gender studies courses today.

 

Solanas was a radical feminist (though she would say she loathed most feminists), a pioneering queer theorist (at least according to some) and the author of “SCUM Manifesto,” in which she argued for the wholesale extermination of men.

 

The manifesto, self-published in 1967, reads as satire, though Solanas defended it as serious. Its opening line is at once absurd and a call to arms for the coalition she was forming, the Society for Cutting Up Men:

 

Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex.

 

On the subject of reproduction, she wrote: “We should produce only whole, complete beings, not physical defects or deficiencies, including emotional deficiencies, such as maleness.”

 

She sold copies in leftist bookstores and on the streets of Greenwich Village for $1 ($2 if the buyer was a man).

 

Her attack on Warhol fractured mainstream feminist groups, including the National Organization for Women, whose members were split on whether to defend or condemn her. Those who defended her, including the writer Ti-Grace Atkinson and the lawyer Flo Kennedy, formed the bedrock of radical feminism and presented Solanas as a symbol of female rage.The shooting became wrapped up in a larger narrative on gun violence when Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot the next day.

The FBI Is A Mortal Threat To Democracy

 

What the report reveals above all is that the deep state is real, it’s corrupt, and it’s at war with the American people.

 

Imagine someone told you that in the run-up to a U.S. presidential election, the FBI tried to undermine a candidate at the behest of the opposing campaign by cooking up a false narrative of collusion with Moscow.

 

And let’s say this conspiracy implicated not just the FBI but also the White House, Justice Department, and CIA — and that nearly the entire corporate press went along with it, gleefully spreading the false narrative that this candidate was a Russian agent, running story after story of fabricated nonsense in a coordinated effort to ensure the opposing candidate won.

 

In normal times, you’d scoff at such an outlandish story, dismiss it as the plot of some half-baked Tom Clancy novel. That could never happen in America, you’d say, where we have free and fair elections, the rule of law, and so on. And anyway, the media would never allow it to happen. They’d be too invested in exposing the conspiracy and claiming, rightly, a Watergate-type story of their very own.

 

But you’d be wrong. All of that really happened in 2016, recounted in all its jaw-dropping detail in Special Counsel John Durham’s 306-page report, released Monday after nearly four years in the making. The big takeaway from the report is that the Obama-era FBI launched a full investigation of the Trump campaign, codenamed Crossfire Hurricane, in the summer of 2016 despite having zero evidence of any collusion between Trump and Russia.

 

Not only that, but officials at the highest levels of the U.S. government, including President Obama, knew that the entire false narrative that Trump was colluding with Moscow was completely made up by the Clinton campaign in an effort to weaponize the federal government against Trump and distract from Hillary Clinton’s own email server scandal.

 

The Durham report recounts how in August 2016, CIA Director John Brennan briefed Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FBI Director James Comey, and other senior administration officials on what the report calls the “Clinton Plan intelligence,” a scheme Clinton approved in July 2016 “to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security services.”

 

In other words, all of these senior officials, some of the most powerful people in the federal government, knew as early as the summer of 2016 that the Clinton campaign had a plan to whip up a scandal by falsely alleging collusion between Trump and Moscow. But all of them ignored this important fact when the FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane around the same time on the basis of far-fetched claims that Trump was a Russian agent — claims that were made in the Steele dossier, a slapdash piece of oppo-research the Clinton campaign itself had paid for.

 

The FBI knew all of this, as did Brennan, yet they ignored it to keep Crossfire Hurricane alive, along with the narrative that Trump was in bed with Russia. That fall, the FBI used the baseless dossier to acquire FISA warrants to spy on the Trump campaign. All of this was eventually leaked to a compliant and incurious new media, and voila! Clinton’s Trump-Russia scandal was born — without a shred of evidence, and indeed despite significant evidence to the contrary.

My colleagues at The Federalist have detailed the shocking contents of the Durham report (here, here, here, and here), but taking a step back from the dizzying array of details, every American needs to understand that what made all of this possible was the stupefying level of corruption and partisan malevolence deep inside our federal government.

 

The Russia-collusion hoax was concocted and brought to life only because the most powerful people in the U.S. intelligence and law enforcement community wanted an excuse to weaponize the federal government against Donald Trump. They didn’t want him to be president, simple as that. It didn’t matter to them what voters wanted; they thought they knew better. So they felt any abuse of power was justified in preventing Trump from winning the White House.

 

That they failed is cold comfort because we know that failure didn’t deter these people. When the next election cycle came around, the same people, including Brennan, were back at it, using their power and influence to shape public perceptions of the campaign and push outright falsehoods on the American people. It was Brennan, after all, who worked with CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell to produce a letter signed by dozens of former intelligence officials in October 2020 denouncing the Hunter Biden laptop story as having, in Brennan’s words, “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation” — another outlandish claim for which there was zero evidence.

 

We know, too, that corporate media are undeterred by these embarrassing episodes. Some of the outlets that did the most to push the Russia-collusion hoax were rewarded for their efforts with Pulitzer prizes and other accolades. None of them have recanted their fake stories, and nearly all of them reacted Monday to the Durham report by dismissing it as a “big fat nothing” or, in the words of CNN’s Nicolle Wallace, a “rabbit hole conspiracy” — without a hint of self-awareness that her own network was a chief purveyor of the very real Trump-Russia conspiracy.

 

Beyond the shamelessness of the media and the corruption of government officials, the Durham report is a sobering reminder that we can’t sustain a self-governing republic under these conditions. When the law enforcement and intelligence agencies of the federal government can be used as a weapon to undermine an outsider candidate for high office, it means our republic is in grave danger.

 

It means, too, that it would be better if we had no FBI at all than the corrupt agency we have now, which sees fit to traffic in actual disinformation, spread conspiracy theories, and throttle the democratic process whenever a candidate comes along who threatens the status quo. That’s the real lesson of the Durham report, and we ignore it at our peril.

Controversial Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in prison, it has emerged.

 

Assange, 52, has been confined in Belmarsh prison in London since April 2019 after being found guilty of breaching the Bail Act.

 

He is currently facing extradition to the United States to face charges of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion.

 

Mr Waters, 80, visited Assange in jail on Saturday. He was accompanied by the convict's wife Stella Assange, 39, and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, who is best known for his role in the Greek debt crisis in 2015.

President Trump on Monday briefly spoke to the press outside of a New York City courthouse before heading back in on the opening day of the non-jury trial in a civil fraud case brought by Stalinist Letitia James.

 

New York judge Arthur Engoron last Tuesday refused to dismiss NY Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit against President Trump.

 

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled last Tuesday that Trump and Trump Org. are liable for fraud.

 

The judge also ruled that Mar-a-Lago is worth $18 million – of course, no one in the real estate business is buying this.

 

Trump said Mar-a-Lago is worth over $1 billion.

 

President Trump blasted the radical judge as he held up a new report from Palm Beach County.

 

“Why are we trying a case that the appellate division of New York state has just ruled recently that we won 80% of our case and this judge refuses to acknowledge the ruling, which is plain for all to see,” Trump said.

Trump held up new reporting from Palm Beach County and said, “Industry insiders that say that say valuation of Mar-a-Lago cited by judge is based on a misunderstanding of basic real estate practice.”

Last month New York Attorney General Letitia James alleged Trump overstated his net worth by billions of dollars to obtain loans, get insurance benefits and manipulate taxes.

 

Letitia James in the court filing said that Trump overstated his net worth between 2011 and 2021.

"You can’t yell fire in a crowded theater. I’m sure you’ve heard somebody say that before when discussing free speech and limitations on free speech and the First Amendment. Well, it’s actually one of the most widely misunderstood quotes in American law. It’s routinely parroted as the status of why there can be or are limitations on free speech, but it is a big fat myth. I will explain here in just a moment, so stick around.

 

Happy Friday, everybody. Hope you had a great week, and as I said, I’m talking this week about the legal myth of you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater. It comes up all the time in all of my First Amendment type cases when I’m discussing somebody kind of where the limitations on free speech are, they always say, “Well, yeah, I know there are limitations because you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater.” So where did that come from?

 

It actually came from a case way back when, in I believe it was 1917, Schenck versus United States is the case. I’ll put the citation down here so you can actually look it up. And it was a quote from Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes. And the interesting about it is the Schenck case wasn’t about fires, it wasn’t about theaters, it kind of wasn’t even about free speech. It was in a way, but it was really about a guy that was being charged with violations of the Espionage Act because he was a member of the socialist party and he was speaking out against the draft. And the other bizarre thing about why this quote gets attributed to why it’s okay to limit free speech is, the Schenck case, which has now actually been overturned and has been for like 60 years, actually stood for the exact opposite. The Schenck case was applying a pretty large degree of censorship on free speech. That’s why it was overturned is because it was actually found to be completely contrary toward what the First Amendment stood for.

 

So, the idea that you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater, Justice Holmes was using that as an analogy to simply say that free speech can’t go completely unchecked. And that idea has maintained it’s truth throughout the years. That’s still true. There are limitations on what is considered protected speech and what is not considered protected speech, and that’s a topic for a different video. But it’s just always been interesting to me that this quote, which is just dicta, it’s not the holding of the case, it’s not really the law of the land, and it’s not Justice Holmes saying that’s what the law of the land should be, has somehow withstood the test of time and is still, to this day, if you watch news reports on First Amendment issues, or you read newspaper articles on First Amendment issues, you’ll invariably run into somebody that talks about, “Well, we all know you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater.” That’s not the law. It really never has been the law. And it’s from a case that got overturned some 60 plus years ago.

 

So, anyway, quick video today, just wanted to bust that legal myth. I’m going to start this series where I’m going to try to shortly dispose of some legal myths that you hear pretty regularly. So stay tuned because I think, I’m hoping, this is the first video in a series. If there’s any legal myths out there that you want me to examine, whether that’s tell you if they’re true or not true, I’m happy to do it, especially if they relate to criminal law, because that’s really what my practice area is. PENSACOLA, Fla. — Don Gaetz, the father of Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, said Monday he intends to run again for the Florida Senate, a chamber he led as president from 2012 to 2014.

Don Gaetz, 75, said he would seek the Florida Panhandle seat being vacated by state Sen. Doug Broxson, also a Republican. The elder Gaetz previously served in the state Senate from 2006 to 2016, including his years as president.

 

Another Republican candidate for the District 1 seat, former state Rep. Frank White, told the Pensacola News Journal he will drop out with Don Gaetz deciding to run.

Matt Gaetz, lately the chief antagonist against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over spending legislation, has represented a Panhandle district in the U.S. House since 2017. Matt Gaetz said he intends to file a motion this week to vacate the speakership over this dispute, possibly triggering a vote on whether McCarthy keeps his position.

The younger Gaetz also served in the state House from 2010-2016 and has been mentioned as a potential candidate for Florida governor in 2026. That’s when Gov. Ron DeSantis — a Republican presidential hopeful — must step down because of term limits.

 

Don Gaetz said his decision to seek a return to Tallahassee has no bearing on what his son might do.

“Matt’s not pursuing any run for governor. He’s pushing forward tackling budget and spending problems in Washington and fighting for term limits,” the elder Gaetz said.

Don Gaetz said he has no higher political aspirations than a return to the Senate to tackle economic issues facing the state.

“It’s apparent that while we are a low tax state, we are also a high electricity cost, high insurance if you can find it state and a high housing cost state,” he said. “High costs, these kitchen table issues, make it hard for people to live here. The state of Florida has to become an affordable state to live in.”
