Thousands of remote IT workers sent wages to North Korea to help fund weapons program, FBI says

 

ST. LOUIS (AP) โ€” Thousands of information technology workers contracting with U.S. companies have for years secretly sent millions of dollars of their wages to North Korea for use in its ballistic missile program, FBI and Department of Justice officials said.

 

Court documents allege that North Koreaโ€™s government dispatched thousands of skilled IT workers to live primarily in China and Russia with the goal of deceiving businesses from the U.S. and elsewhere into hiring them as freelance remote employees. The workers used various techniques to make it look like they were working in the U.S., including paying Americans to use their home Wi-Fi connections, said Jay Greenberg, special agent in charge of the St. Louis FBI office. /moar

TARRANT COUNTY, Texas โ€” A sophomore high school student suddenly passed away after finishing a 5K run at a district track meet in Tarrant County.

Angel Hernandez ran cross country for the Chisholm Trail High School track team and had just hit his best time ever as his team competed in the district 3-6A meet at The Buff in Haltom City on Friday, Oct. 13. Witnesses remember seeing Hernandez collapse to the ground right after he crossed the finish line. Many of his friends were concerned as they helped him over to a water station, where he collapsed again.

Hernandez was rushed to Medical City Alliance and passed away about an hour later.

WFAA spoke with Brent Brevard about coaching the teen his freshman year.

โ€œHe was the kind of student athlete you wanted. He worked hard and cared about the teammatesโ€ฆ but then he also acted right in school and took care of his grades,โ€ said retired the Chisholm Trail High School coach.

Brevard was deeply saddened after learning about Hernandez's untimely death.

โ€œIt was tragic, it was terrible news. Heโ€™s such a great kid, a likable kid, a good student, and it was awful news," said Brevard.

WFAA also spoke with Brent Barker, the athletic director for Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, who told WFAA Hernandez's family was presented with the teenโ€™s varsity letter jacket, in honor of all his hard work and dedication to the school.

Brevard attended funeral proceedings in Brownwood, TX, the following Friday.

โ€œA lot of people attended, a lot of his teammates made it, and they encouraged everyone to wear purple,โ€ said Brevard.

Hernandez was also a dedicated student at the Texas School of Karate, located nearby in Blue Mound. The training center closed its doors for the week and in a Facebook post urged others to keep the Hernandez family in their prayers.

Friends and loved ones still have no idea what caused the high school sophomore to collapse after running one of his best races in the district cross country meet. The teenโ€™s cause of death is under investigation by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Investigations reveal discrepancies in Israelโ€™s Gaza hospital attack claims

 

Posts on X sent by Hananya Naftali, a digital aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also aroused suspicion. โ€œIsraeli Air Force struck a Hamas terrorist base inside a hospital in Gaza,โ€ he wrote, but the post was almost immediately deleted.

 

By 10:58pm, Naftali apologised on X for sharing โ€œa Reuters reportโ€ that โ€œfalsely stated Israel struck the hospitalโ€. He said he had since deleted the tweet. โ€œAs the [Israeli army] does not bomb hospitals, I assumed Israel was targeting one of the Hamas bases in Gaza,โ€ he added.

 

The Israeli army also released a video with a recording of a conversation between purported Hamas officials, where they appear to talk about the misfired rocket that had caused the hospital blast.

 

Earshot said that a forensic sound analysis revealed that the audio was recorded on two separate channels, and then edited together, disqualifying it from being a credible source of evidence.

 

In its analysis of the audio, Channel 4 said it had found the callโ€™s credibility questionable due to the syntax used, accent and tone of voice.

 

One journalist later asked Hagari at the press conference: โ€œIโ€™d like you to address the question of credibility, because โ€ฆ the [Israeli army] has a less than perfect track record with the issue of credibilityโ€.
