New York, NY, February 25, 2019 — Today the International Rescue Committee (IRC) announced the election of Secretary Timothy Geithner and Sally Susman as co-chairs of the board of directors. Secretary Geithner and Ms. Susman will succeed Katherine Farley and Tracy Wolstencroft as board co-chairs.

Secretary Geithner has served on the IRC board since 2013, and was most recently the chair of IRC overseers, a group that advises the board of directors on matters of policy, advocacy and fundraising.

Secretary Geithner, whose first exposure to the IRC dates back to 1979, when he visited refugee camps along the Thai-Cambodian border, said, “I am proud to help support this vital organization at this time of extreme humanitarian need in so many parts of the world.”

Mr. Geithner was the 75th secretary of the treasury for the first term of President Barack Obama’s administration, and served as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between 2003 and 2009. He is currently the president of Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm based in New York.

Ms. Susman has been an IRC board member since 2011, and has been a driving force behind the organization’s ever-growing partnership with Pfizer.

“The services that the IRC provides are more critical than ever before, as record number of people are fleeing war and persecution worldwide,” said Ms. Susman. “I am honored at the opportunity to continue supporting IRC’s programs in over 40 war-affected countries, as well as their resettlement work in the U.S.”

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. Information warfare campaigns designed by the U.S. government to target Americans with the aim of splitting them apart from their countrymen through weaponized falsehoods are rooted in new methods of shaping and controlling the online communities that many Americans trust to interpret the world around them. From Russiagate to COVID-19 to Jan. 6, the newness and force of these campaigns has knocked the country senseless, with the left readily acclimating itself to third-world norms, and large parts of the right increasingly hopeless.

What the right has learned from a decade of information warfare targeting it is to distrust the media. Knowing, for instance, that the Justice Department interfered in the 2016, 2020, and now the 2024 elections, what else is phony? Was 9/11 an inside job after all? What about the moon landing? What haven’t we been lied to about? Our families are real, our kids are real. But what else is there to hold on to? It’s like reaching for a life raft and finding only splinters. Maybe America is fake all the way down.

But it’s not, and the right can’t afford to let itself be fooled into despair with so much at stake. The same U.S. government agencies and officials that pushed everything from Russiagate to the Russia bounty story and lied about the origins of COVID-19, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and the character of Jan. 6 protests are now warning that Israel’s war against Hamas is likely to drag U.S. forces into WWIII. It’s another information operation designed to disorient and demoralize the America First camp. This time, however, there’s a big difference—an influential segment of the right is amplifying the left’s campaign against them.

The left claims that America is a fraud at its origins, a racist hoax perpetrated against nonwhites to this very day. The left tears down monuments, desecrates our heroes, replaces our holidays, and rewrites our history to suit their pathological grievances. It’s a whole-of-party effort to force the middle class to our knees in despair, so that the country’s ruling class and the oligarchs can continue running their high-tech monopolies while defunding police forces and opening the borders to depress wages, impoverish communities, and terrorize families.

But now, the right is in danger of transitioning into the left. Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that amid the ruins, some of those capitalizing on the chaos and preying on the shell-shocked are themselves from the right. A year ago, for example, right-wing influencer Jackson Hinkle sounded like a normal Trump voter. After Biden delivered his infamous Philadelphia speech accusing his political opponents of terrorism, Hinkle called him a dictator, and said he was plunging us into fascism at the behest of George Soros and Klaus Schwab while using the intelligence agencies to target freedom-loving Americans. Most of that is true.

Today, however, Hinkle’s Twitter feed looks like nothing more than a Soros-funded operation, pumping out reports every hour enticing clicks via the eternal threat that is antisemitism, and promoting actual America-hating terrorists in the process. Hinkle’s business model?“Subscribe to my X Premium for $3 to help me DEFEAT THE ZIONIST LIES.”

Carole Marie Sonnenfeld and Timothy Franz Geithner, 1983 graduates of Dartmouth College, were married yesterday at his parents' summer home in East Orleans, Mass. The Rev. Thomas Keehn, a United Church of Christ minister, officiated.

Mrs. Geithner, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sonnenfeld of Princeton, N.J., is a research associate for Common Cause, a public-affairs lobbying group in Washington. Her father is a professor of French and comparative literature at Princeton University. Her mother, Portia Sonnenfeld, is conductor of the Chamber Symphony of Princeton.

Mr. Geithner, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter F. Geithner of Larchmont, N.Y., graduated from the International School of Bangkok, Thailand. His father is the program officer in charge of developing countries for the Ford Foundation. His mother, Deborah Geithner, is a piano teacher.

Mary P. Schowalter was maid of honor. Mr. Geithner was best man for his son.

When Timothy Franz Geithner (pronounced GITE-ner), 47, began work at the New York Federal Reserve in November 2003, he was met with quite a bit of resistance. A number of insiders saw him as a poor choice; Tom Schlesinger, executive director of Virginia-based think tank the Financial Markets Center, noted that "there is very little in Geithner's resume that shows experience in regulatory issues," lamenting that his appointment "raises questions about the willingness of the New York Fed to aggressively supervise financial holding companies in its territory."

Since Nov. 21, though, when word leaked that Geithner would be named Treasury Secretary in Barack Obama's Administration, reviews have been somewhat more positive. (See pictures of Barack Obama's campaign behind the scenes.) He's now an insider himself, knee deep in the unfolding economic crisis, who has worked closely with former New York Fed chief Gerald Corrigan, former U.S. Fed chief Alan Greenspan and current Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and head of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke. While some call these relationships a crutch that he relies on too heavily, others credit him for his energy, resilience and broad range of experience. A look at his personal history:

Family and education

Geithner was born in Manhattan, New York, to Peter Franz Geithner and Deborah Moore.[6] His father, a German American, was the director of the Ford Foundation's Asia program in New York during the 1990s, after working for the United States Agency for International Development in Zambia and Zimbabwe.[7]During the early 1980s, Geithner's father oversaw the Ford Foundation's microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham Soetoro, Barack Obama's mother, and they met at least once in Jakarta.[8]Geithner's paternal grandfather, Paul Herman Geithner (1902–1972), immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1908 from Zeulenroda, Germany.[9]

Geithner's mother, a Mayflower descendant, belongs to a New England family.[9] Her father, Charles Frederick Moore, Jr., served as vice-president of public relations for the Ford Motor Company from 1952 to 1964, and advised President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as Nelson Rockefeller and George W. Romney, on their respective presidential campaigns. His uncle, Jonathan Moore, served in the departments of Defense, Justice and State, as well as in the United Nations.[7]

Ford Foundation Links Parents of Obama and Treasury Secretary Nominee

In an unusual twist of fate, the parents of Barack Obama and his pick for secretary of Treasury, Timothy Geithner, share a nonprofit connection: they worked at the Ford Foundation at the same time.

Indeed, Mr. Geithner’s father was head of the philanthropy’s Asia grant making for a period in the early 1980s and oversaw the work of Mr. Obama’s mother, who developed the organization’s microfinance programs in Indonesia.

Charron further told the court ideology and behavior matched a profile of the suspect developed by provincial police specialists and officials soon gained a warrant to install a tracking device on Paré's vehicle.

On September 1 and 5, 2023, the tracking device showed he was at the locations where other fires had started.

He was ultimately arrested on September 7 and admitted to the police that he had ignited nine of the fires.

The prosecutor told the court: 'At this point, the accused admitted he was the one who started the fires and, as his main motivation, claimed he was doing tests to find out whether the forest was really dry or not.'

A pre-sentencing report has been ordered that will consider both Paré's mental state and the risk he poses to public safety. It will be submitted by April 22.

“I make the vision,” he says quietly, a touch of gravel in his voice after 20-plus years of smoking.

This would be hilarious were it not for the fact the U.S. and U.K are killing people with no certainty that they are responsible for the actual launch of missiles. The Western world is striving to ignore the purpose behind the Houthi shutdown of the Red Sea — i.e., force Israel to cease killing Palestinians in Gaza. While most world leaders ignore this fact, the Houthi actions are being celebrated by street Arabs and Muslims. In other words, a vast sea of humanity. This is a true David vs. Goliath struggle.

Yemen, based on videos of previous military parades, has thousands of missiles and drones. The International Institute for Security Studies reports:

In parades in 2022 and 2023, the Houthis unveiled additional ASCMs, including what appeared to be two anti-ship versions of the Iranian Quds/351 LACM. One version is allegedly equipped with a radar-homing seeker (Sayyad), and the other has an electro-optical/infrared seeker (Quds Z-0). Based on the range of the original Quds and on Houthi statements, both systems could have a range of at least 800 km.

The parades also featured a variety of anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) and guided rockets employing Iranian infrared or imaging infrared seeker technology. The 450 km-range Asef appears to be a rebranded ASBM version of Iran’s Fateh 313 missile, while the Tankil represents a previously unseen anti-ship version of the IRGC-developed 500 km-range Zohayr. The two designs constitute the heaviest Houthi anti-ship missiles, both with warheads of more than 300 kilograms, and are of Iranian origin.

Three smaller ASBMs – the 140 km-range Faleq, the Mayun and the Bahr al-Ahmar – strongly resemble Iranian design philosophy and seeker technology but do not precisely match known Iranian systems. They could either be Iranian systems not observed before and smuggled to Yemen, or Houthi-produced rockets combined using Iranian guidance kits, not unlike developments made by another Iran proxy, the Lebanese Hizbullah, in its precision-guided surface-to-surface missile programme. Finally, the Houthis have presented an S-75 (SA-2) surface-to-air missile, likely from pre-war Yemeni army stocks, modified for an anti-ship role using an Iranian guidance kit.

This means the United States and the United Kingdom will be embroiled in a lengthy, costly campaign with no guarantee of success. Fear of depleting U.S. Naval supplies of air defense missiles is the reason the U.S. is relying on fixed-wing aircraft to deliver bombs. The U.S. is being very sparing about using Tomahawk cruise missiles because the inventory is being rapidly depleted:

While this means Raytheon will profit from new USG contracts to build more Tomahawks until an alternative becomes available, the U.S. cannot produce enough cruise missiles to sustain a rate of fire that uses up 20 missiles a week. DOD also has to keep a reserve for contingencies in Iran and China. The United States is like the Big Bad Wolf huffing and puffing at the brick house. For all of its bluster it cannot close the deal and shutdown Yemen.

Please do not interpret this piece as making light of the U.S. and U.K. bombing of the Houthis in Yemen. There are people dying on the ground and that is no laughing matter. The reason for my title is that the U.S. and U.K are acting like the clumsy cops chasing Pierce Brosnan in the movie, The Thomas Crown Affair. Yep. The Houthis are moving their missiles and drones around in the same fashion that all of the Bowler hatted, wool-coat wearing, Pierce Brosnan look-alikes are doing as they run around the museum exchanging fake briefcases. In the same fashion that the police were frustrated in trying to arrest Brosnan and prevent the theft of a piece of art, the U.S. and U.K. keep launching airstrikes at sites where they think the mobile missile platforms are and still cannot stop Yemen from launching more missiles. Tiny Yemen is frustrating the world’s “greatest” military power in the world.

This would be hilarious were it not for the fact the U.S. and U.K are killing people with no certainty that they are responsible for the actual launch of missiles. The Western world is striving to ignore the purpose behind the Houthi shutdown of the Red Sea — i.e., force Israel to cease killing Palestinians in Gaza. While most world leaders ignore this fact, the Houthi actions are being celebrated by street Arabs and Muslims. In other words, a vast sea of humanity. This is a true David vs. Goliath struggle.

Yemen, based on videos of previous military parades, has thousands of missiles and drones. The International Institute for Security Studies reports:

In parades in 2022 and 2023, the Houthis unveiled additional ASCMs, including what appeared to be two anti-ship versions of the Iranian Quds/351 LACM. One version is allegedly equipped with a radar-homing seeker (Sayyad), and the other has an electro-optical/infrared seeker (Quds Z-0). Based on the range of the original Quds and on Houthi statements, both systems could have a range of at least 800 km.

The parades also featured a variety of anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) and guided rockets employing Iranian infrared or imaging infrared seeker technology. The 450 km-range Asef appears to be a rebranded ASBM version of Iran’s Fateh 313 missile, while the Tankil represents a previously unseen anti-ship version of the IRGC-developed 500 km-range Zohayr. The two designs constitute the heaviest Houthi anti-ship missiles, both with warheads of more than 300 kilograms, and are of Iranian origin.

Three smaller ASBMs – the 140 km-range Faleq, the Mayun and the Bahr al-Ahmar – strongly resemble Iranian design philosophy and seeker technology but do not precisely match known Iranian systems. They could either be Iranian systems not observed before and smuggled to Yemen, or Houthi-produced rockets combined using Iranian guidance kits, not unlike developments made by another Iran proxy, the Lebanese Hizbullah, in its precision-guided surface-to-surface missile programme. Finally, the Houthis have presented an S-75 (SA-2) surface-to-air missile, likely from pre-war Yemeni army stocks, modified for an anti-ship role using an Iranian guidance kit.

This means the United States and the United Kingdom will be embroiled in a lengthy, costly campaign with no guarantee of success. Fear of depleting U.S. Naval supplies of air defense missiles is the reason the U.S. is relying on fixed-wing aircraft to deliver bombs. The U.S. is being very sparing about using Tomahawk cruise missiles because the inventory is being rapidly depleted:

Raytheon builds Tomahawks at a facility in Arizona. Each missile costs the Navy more than $1 million. In 2020 the Navy has around 4,000 Tomahawks. But that number is set to fall as the fleet upgrades some missiles and disposes of others.

While this means Raytheon will profit from new USG contracts to build more Tomahawks until an alternative becomes available, the U.S. cannot produce enough cruise missiles to sustain a rate of fire that uses up 20 missiles a week. DOD also has to keep a reserve for contingencies in Iran and China. The United States is like the Big Bad Wolf huffing and puffing at the brick house. For all of its bluster it cannot close the deal and shutdown Yemen.
