"She asked if I was OK, and I said I was," Soren told me. She asked him who his mom was, and he told her my name. Then he got a little nervous — he didn't feel like he should be talking to her — and just walked away. I guess that, at some point, she called the police.

I didn't fuss at Soren for walking to the Dollar General because I think that's fine. I fussed at him for not letting me know that he was going when leaving the property. It was a communication thing. He apologized, and we moved on with the afternoon.

I was arrested

Around 6:30 p.m., the deputy sheriff and another officer knocked on our door.

I opened the door and held my finger up, asking if they could give me a moment to end my phone call with my client. "You need to step outside now," the deputy said. They asked me to turn around and put my hands behind my back. Soren was sitting right there watching this whole thing.

They said that I was under arrest on a charge of reckless conduct and took my phone.

At the station, they fingerprinted me. They stripped me down and made me change clothes into an orange jumpsuit. They scanned my body and took my mug shot.

I was only in there for an hour and a half. My mom and sister paid $500 for me to be released on bail, and I was back home by 8:30 p.m.

On Halloween, a case manager from the Division of Family and Children Services visited our home and spoke to the kids, my mom, my sister-in-law, and my dad.

I was asked to sign a safety plan

The next day, I contacted David DeLugas, the founder of ParentsUSA, a nonprofit that often provides pro bono legal support to parents wrongly accused of child neglect.

The case manager texted me on November 5 because she wanted to stop by to go over a so-called safety plan. It required me to delegate a "safety person" — presumably my mom — to be a "knowing participant and guardian" and watch over the children when I wasn't there. Under her supervision, I also needed to download a tracking app onto Soren's phone so I could monitor his location.

DeLugas, an attorney, explained the pros and cons of me signing — or not signing — the safety plan.

I decided that it was better not to sign it. I knew the potential risk — that the deputies could push the issue and maybe even try to have my children removed from my home — so it's scary.

But I feel it's more important to stand up for what we believe in. My kids are all supportive of that decision because we've talked about everything that's been going on. We know the maximum punishment could be a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail. DeLugas is helping us dispute the charges.

Meanwhile, friends and family have said they're concerned because they sometimes leave their kids alone at home or their kids go out for walks like Soren. They wonder now if they'll have cops show up because of it.

None of us wants the government telling us how to raise our children.

Powerful dust storm in California causes 20-car pileup in Madera County

A powerful dust storm swept through California’s Madera County on Monday afternoon along State Route 152, causing a car pileup as several vehicles collided due to severely reduced visibility.

Approximately 20 cars were involved in the pileup, according to the California Highway Patrol. Several people sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

“It was terrifying, it was just terrifying. We got hit, we thought we were okay, then we got hit again, and again. We just thought it wasn’t going to end. I really thought we were going to die. I’m really thankful we’re okay,” said Delissa Fulce, one of the drivers stranded on the highway.

The storm reportedly downed several fences and trees as it swept through the region.

Migrants Racing to Cross US Border Before Trump Presidency

Human smugglers in Central and South America reportedly are encouraging migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.

Soon after taking office, Trump is expected to take action to secure the southern border and limit the number of migrants entering the country.

Among the anticipated moves by the second Trump administration is halting the use of a Biden administration app that allows people to apply for U.S. asylum while in Mexico and then cross legally when they have an appointment.

Smugglers are using online tools, such as WhatsApp, to tell migrants they need to move now if they want to enter the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reported.

"There were four WhatsApp groups in which hundreds of migrants coordinated their departure on U.S. election day. As soon as Trump's victory became clear, messages spreading fear began to appear," Luis Villagrán, a Mexican migrant advocate, told the Journal.

The New York Post reported Thursday that an average of 300 migrants were crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, every day and officials were preparing for the possibility of "mass" crossings before Trump takes office.

"People know the window is going to close, so I think the crap is going to hit the fan in December and January," one Border Patrol source told the Post.

The source added that agents were getting "hit hard" by smugglers bringing migrants across on dirt bikes.

"We're waiting to get those last-minute groups getting across the border before Trump gets in. It's picking up already," another border official said.

At least 80% of illegal migrants hire smugglers, according to a 2023 report by the Department of Homeland Security.

Migrant smuggling has generated an estimated $4 billion to $12 billion in annual revenue, joining drugs and extortion as a top income stream for Mexican cartels, The Washington Post reported.

After Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the Nov. 5 election, The New York Times reported migrants were weighing whether to make the trek to the U.S. because the president-elect has campaigned on implementing the largest deportation effort in American history.

In response to the 2023 United States banking crisis in March 2023 involving multiple failures of American banks, in 2023 the United States government took extraordinary measures to mitigate fallout across the banking sector.

On March 12, the Federal Reserve created the Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), an emergency lending program providing loans of up to one year in length to banks, savings associations, credit unions, and other eligible depository institutions that pledge U.S. Treasuries, agency debt and mortgage-backed securities, and other qualifying assets as collateral.

The "Bank Term Funding Program" was designed to provide liquidity to financial institutions, following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and other bank failures. It was also created to reduce the risks associated with unrealized losses in the U.S. banking system, which totaled over $600 billion at the time of the program's launch.

Funded through the Deposit Insurance Fund, the program offers loans of up to one year to eligible borrowers who pledge as collateral certain types of securities including U.S. Treasuries, agency debt, and mortgage-backed securities.

Financial Gurus are saying that the federal reserve bank, "pulled" over half of the available credit in the Bank Term Funding Program and this, they say, will have the effect of putting massive stress on banks.

According to these financial people, SOME banks won't be able to cover cash withdrawals. This is NOT because the banks don't have the funds, but because the bank's funds are locked-up in things like Treasury Notes. Little solace to a depositor who needs cash, now, or companies that need cash for things like payroll or inventory.

Wind Blowing Out of Uranus Makes It Hard to Probe, NASA Complains

Nov 13, 11:11 AM EST

Scientists have found that a "rare intense wind event" during NASA's Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus in 1986 may have seriously messed with our understanding of the planet.

And yes, we admit, the jokes practically write themselves.

But the research is very real. As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab scientist Jamie Jasinski and an international team of researchers found that our current understanding of Uranus may be based on data collected during an unusual period of time when Uranus' magnetosphere was in an "anomalous, compressed state," which only occurs "less than five percent of the time."

In other words, our current understanding of the distant planet may be far more limited than we thought because the Sun was pelting Uranus with solar weather at the time.

Letting Rip

Jasinksi reexamined the data collected by Voyager 2 during its 1986 flyby and found that the probe had examined Uranus shortly after an intense solar wind event, which saw a huge surge of charged particles blast its way from the Sun.

The event compressed the planet's magnetosphere, they found, causing it to deform into a significantly asymmetrical shape that appeared to lack plasma.

"We postulate that such a compression of the magnetosphere could increase energetic electron fluxes within the radiation belts and empty the magnetosphere of its plasma temporarily," the researchers wrote in their paper.

Even if Voyager 2 had come to visit a mere week earlier, the researchers suggest, it would have found a far more recognizable magnetosphere, like those surrounding other planets in our solar system, including Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.

"Owing to the variation of the solar wind at Uranus, we suggest that there may be two magnetospheric cycles during solar minimum," the researchers suggested, referring to the calmest period of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Intriguingly, Uranus' two most distant moons Titania and Oberon may be orbiting the planet outside the magnetosphere, which could give astronomers an unprecedented look at their subsurface oceans without any electromagnetic interference.

In short, we shouldn't draw any definitive conclusions from NASA's flyby almost 40 years ago.

"We highlight that our understanding of the Uranus system is highly limited, and our analysis shows that any conclusions made from the Voyager 2 flyby are similarly tentative," the researchers conclude in their paper.

"We suggest that discoveries made by the Voyager 2 flyby should not be assigned any typicality regarding Uranus’s magnetosphere."
