Russia Official: Biden Inflames War to Hobble Trump

Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov slammed President Joe Biden on Friday for purposely escalating the conflict in Ukraine to hand President-elect Donald Trump a more chaotic situation, the Russian News Agency reported.

Ukraine on Tuesday targeted a Russian weapons arsenal using lone-range U.S.-made ATACMS missiles. The next day, Biden agreed to provide Ukraine with anti-personnel land mines, additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, as well as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear protective equipment.

Wednesday's announcement marked the 70th tranche of equipment to be provided by the U.S. Department of Defense to Ukraine since August 2021.

"As for what can be expected from Biden and his outgoing administration, well, the ATACMS supplies and allowing the British and French to use Storm Shadows and SCALPSs certainly have an element of trying to leave as negative a legacy as possible for the next administration," Lavrov said, according to the Russian News Agency.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the use of such missiles crosses a line and marked a major escalation on the 1,000th day of the war. The Associated Press reported that Putin responded by formally lowering the country's threshold for use of nuclear weapons, allowing for a potential nuclear response by Russia, even to a conventional attack.

Russia on Thursday hit the Ukrainian city of Dnipro using a unique model of hypersonic Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRMB) called the RS-26 Rubezh.

"It seems that this desire, let's say, to muck things up, can be seen in the current situation," Lavrov added, going on to say that undermining their successors is "typical of the Democrats" and accused former President Barack Obama of similarly attempting to "pull the same trick" on Trump before leaving office.

Obama expelled dozens of Russian diplomats with families and subjected them to difficult travel conditions, Lavrov said, adding that Obama's actions were seen as a way to "undermine" Trump's first few weeks in office.

Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov agreed with Lavrov, telling reporters Wednesday that the Biden administration's actions over the past week was in the interest of prolonging the war rather than seeking a diplomatic end.

"If you look at the trends of the outgoing U.S. administration, they are fully committed to continuing the war in Ukraine and are doing everything they can to do so," Peskov said.

Maurizio Cattelan's provocative artwork of a banana duct-taped to a wall has fetched $6.2m (£4.9m) at Sotheby's in New York - four times higher than pre-sale estimates.

The auction house says Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun outbid six other rivals to get the "Comedian" installation of the Italian visual artist on Wednesday.

"In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience," Mr Sun was quoted as saying.

The taped banana - now perhaps one of the most expensive fruits ever sold - was actually bought earlier in the day for a mere $0.35, according to the New York Times.

"Comedian" was first unveiled to the public in 2019, instantly becoming a viral sensation and also provoking heated debates about what art is.

The installation - which has travelled around the world - comes with instructions on how to replace the banana whenever it rots.

In fact, the fruit has been eaten not once, but twice.

In 2023, a South Korean art student helped himself when the installation went on display at Seoul's Leeum Museum of Art.

The museum later placed a new banana in the same spot, local media reported.

Four years earlier, a performance artist pulled the banana from the wall after the artwork was sold for $120,000 at Art Basel in Miami.

The banana was swiftly replaced, and no further action was taken.

President-elect Donald J. Trump chose Dr. David Weldon, a former congressman, on Friday to serve as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Weldon, 71, is a native of Long Island and earned a medical degree in New York before moving to Florida to practice. Starting in 1995, he served seven terms in Congress, representing the 15th District of Florida, before forgoing re-election and returning to his medical practice.

As a member of Congress, Dr. Weldon pushed the false notion that thimerosal, a preservative compound in some vaccines, had caused an explosion of autism — a hypothesis that experts say has no evidence. He also introduced a “vaccine safety bill” that aimed to relocate most vaccine safety research from the C.D.C. — which he said had an “inherent conflict of interest” — to a separate agency within the Department of Health and Human Services.

In a statement on Friday evening, Trump said that Dr. Nesheiwat is a "fierce advocate and strong communicator for preventative medicine and public health."

"I am proud to announce that Dr. Janette Nesheiwat will be the Nation’s Doctor as the United States Surgeon General. Dr. Nesheiwat is a double board-certified Medical Doctor with an unwavering commitment to saving and treating thousands of American lives," he said.

Nesheiwat is a former Fox News medical contributor.

Both men served under Trump during his first term. Wong served in the State Department as deputy special representative for North Korea, and the deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and pacific affairs.

Rep. Mike Waltz, who was tapped by Trump to serve as his national security adviser, praised Wong on X.

Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a first-term Republican representative from Oregon who narrowly lost her House seat this month, was chosen on Friday to serve as labor secretary in the coming Trump administration.

“Lori has worked tirelessly with both business and labor to build America’s work force, and support the hardworking men and women of America,” President-elect Donald J. Trump said in a statement.

A moderate from a swing district that includes parts of Portland, Ms. Chavez-DeRemer, 56, is not a major figure in American labor politics. But she was one of only a few House Republicans to support major pro-union legislation, and she split her district’s union endorsements with her Democratic opponent, Janelle Bynum, earning nods from ironworkers, firefighters and local Teamsters.

When the House speaker, Mike Johnson, spoke at a Chavez-DeRemer rally in October, he said, “She’s got more labor union endorsements than any Republican I’ve ever seen in my life.”

President-elect Donald Trump tapped Project 2025 co-author Russell Vought to serve as the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) during his second administration.

Vought served as Trump’s OMB deputy director during his first term in the Oval Office.

“I am very pleased to nominate Russell Thurlow Vought, from the Great State of Virginia, as the Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB),” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Friday.

“He did an excellent job serving in this role in my First Term – We cut four Regulations for every new Regulation, and it was a Great Success!” he added in the post.

Donald Trump has nominated Scott Bessent, a billionaire investment manager who is gay, as secretary of the Treasury.

Bessent, if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, would be the first out member of the LGBTQ+ community to be Treasury secretary and one of only a few to ever hold a Cabinet or Cabinet-level position.
