Fmr Homeland Security Sec Doubts Trump’s Mass Deportation Plan, Teases Ban On Executive Orders

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson cast doubt Sunday on NBC News about President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans, after suggesting that presidential executive orders should be banned.

During Trump’s campaign, the former president vowed to shut down the U.S. southern border and conduct a large-scale deportation operation. On “Meet the Press,” NBC host Kristen Welker questioned Johnson about Trump’s plan, noting how he planned to continue rolling out his goals for the border after signing executive orders.

“So, first of all, somebody should pass a law banning executive orders on day one. Because the reality is executive orders drafted by transition teams without the input of the affected agency before the cabinet secretaries are even confirmed are not great ideas,” Johnson said.

Johnson went on to call out the travel ban as an example of an executive order he disagreed with and was involved in during the Obama administration, noting that Guantanamo Bay is still open. The former secretary also said Trump should start with the deportation of criminals, national security threats and recent border crossers, highlighting the “reality of enforcement” even for Trump.

A U.S. Army recruiter purported to be Max Zhang has appeared on video suggesting that he would lay down his arms should America and China go to war. Zhang says he would instead remain neutral and aid the Chinese people, though he insists he would not support their communist government.

“Being a soldier really isn’t that hard because it’s just a job,” Zhang says. “We don’t need to talk about a country or any loyalty because it’s just a job, right? No matter who you work for, it’s just a job and whoever will pay you.”

“In eleven years as a soldier, the U.S. Army has never emphasized how China is bad,” he tells the interviewer. Zhang reiterates: “I’ve never heard it.” He goes on to emphasize that there has been no anti-China indoctrination in the U.S. military, again stating he’s never heard anyone push the idea that China is an enemy of the United States.

‘NEUTRAL.’

However, Zhang also appears to admit to concerning Chinese sympathies in the interview, alluding to several illicit vacations he may have taken to the country while stationed in South Korea. When asked what he would do if the U.S. and China went to war, Zhang initially dismissed the idea as unrealistic, warning that “If they went to war, nuclear weapons would be used. It might turn into World War III.”

“If war does happen, then I’ll definitely quit the U.S. Army,” Zhang eventually concedes, adding: “I also won’t be joining the Chinese Army because I’m an American citizen.” He stresses that he would want to remain neutral in the conflict and instead try to aid Chinese people who need help.U.S. military personnel take an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” and to “obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over [them].”

They arrived in huge numbers on shared bikes after pedaling 30 miles in the evening chill, pumped by the adrenaline of youth and the thrill of embarking on a spontaneous adventure with friends.

Nighttime bike rides to Kaifeng, an ancient city in central China’s Henan province known for its historic sites and soup dumplings, have been all the rage among college students in the nearby provincial capital Zhengzhou – a trend initially encouraged by the government as it sought to promote local tourism.

But now, officials are scrambling to curb the craze by deploying police and closing bike lanes after its popularity appears to have gotten out of hand. Tens of thousands of cyclists brought intercity traffic to a standstill, while piles of discarded bikes overwhelmed the streets of Kaifeng, leaving commuters in Zhengzhou struggling to find bikes to ride home.

Authorities cited traffic disruptions and safety concerns for the clampdown on the impromptu gathering.

But the scenes of hordes of university students mobilizing, organizing and congregating in public are likely to have rattled local officials given the ruling Communist Party’s history with youth movements in China and its obsession with stability.

On Friday night, Zhengkai Avenue, a main road connecting the two cities, was crammed by an endless flow of young cyclists as police tried to maintain order; at some sections, the riders completely took over the five car lanes, according to videos circulating on Chinese social media.

Over the weekend, authorities in Kaifeng and Zhengzhou closed off bike lanes on Zhengkai Avenue, to try to stop cyclists from entering.

Meanwhile, three bike-sharing platforms inZhengzhou issued a joint statement, warning that their bikes will be locked down automatically if ridden out of the city.

To prevent students from joining the cycling crowd,some colleges and universities in Zhengzhou even imposed restrictions on leaving campus, according to accounts shared by students on social media.

Spontaneous youth gatherings, political or otherwise, have long been treated with deep suspicion by Chinese authorities.

In the spring of 1989, university students in Beijing rode their bikes to Tiananmen Square to join pro-democracy protests that ended in a bloody crackdown by the Chinese military. It remains one of China’s most sensitive political taboos to this day, so much so that most of what happened is heavily censored inside the country.

And in late 2022, it was mostly young people who took to the streets in major Chinese cities or gathered on university campuses to protest leader Xi Jinping’s stringent Covid-19 restrictions in one of the most extraordinary challenges to the Communist Party’s rule in decades.

The bike rides to Kaifeng, however, didn’t seem designed to deliver a political message.

While some student cyclists carried Chinese flags, sang the national anthem and shouted slogans in support of the Communist Party – one even waved a banner demanding unification with Taiwan – most appeared to have just joined the ride for fun.

But as the night rides exploded in scale and started to spread to other cities, local officials stepped in.

The emergency measures mark an abrupt U-turn from the government. Previously, authorities rushed to promote the trend, which started in June when four female university students in Zhengzhou made an impulsive trip to Kaifeng on share bikes to satisfy their late-night craving for soup dumplings.

Their journey quickly went viral, inspiring more Zhengzhou students to follow suit as the hashtag “youth is priceless” trended on social media.

Emirati authorities have found the body of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an emissary to Abu Dhabi’s Chabad chapter missing since Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Office and Foreign Ministry said in a joint statement Sunday.

Israel’s embassy in Abu Dhabi has been in contact with Kogan’s family in the UAE, the statement said, and family members living Israel have also been updated.

The statement called the killing of Kogan “a despicable antisemitic act of terror” and pledged that Israel would use all available means to bring the killers to justice.

“With great pain we share that Rabbi Zvi Kogan, Chabad-Lubavitch emissary to Abu Dhabi, UAE, was murdered by terrorists after being abducted on Thursday,” Chabad said in a brief statement on Sunday.

Kogan’s body was found in the Emirati city of Al Ain, which borders Oman, around 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Abu Dhabi, though it is not clear if he was killed there or elsewhere, former Israeli Druze politician Ayoob Kara told Reuters in an English-language interview in Dubai.

Several people were wounded by rocket fire on Sunday as the Hezbollah terror group fired more than 250 rockets and drones at northern and central Israel in several salvos throughout the day, according to the military and medics.

In northern Israel, a man in his 60s was hit by shrapnel to the stomach while working in a field in the Kfar Blum area, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. He was seriously injured, and taken to Ziv Hospital in Safed for treatment.

In Haifa, two men in their fifties were lightly hurt by shrapnel during a rocket barrage on the northern port city, MDA said, and one other person was being treated for acute anxiety.

The barrage also caused damage to a residential building in the area.

Earlier on Sunday, a woman in her 50s was lightly injured by shrapnel following rocket fire on the Western Galilee at around 7:30 a.m.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for years ignored warnings from security chiefs about the growing Hamas threat from Gaza and turned down repeated proposals to kill Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Muhammad Deif, a report claimed Saturday, exploring what was presented as a longstanding doctrine of inaction and hesitation that preceded the Palestinian terror group’s unprecedented invasion and massacre in southern Israel last year.

Netanyahu’s office flatly denied the allegations made by Channel 12 news, whose in-depth report highlighted the premier’s priority of defending his image as “Mr. Security” and his aversion to taking risks as key reasons why Israel was unprepared for Hamas’s deadly attack, which killed over 1,200 people and resulted in the kidnapping of over 250 people into Gaza.

The investigation said Netanyahu received detailed intelligence in 2014 about Hamas’s plans to invade Israel. In the ensuing years, Hamas operatives repeatedly approached the border fence, but the prime minister blocked any significant Israeli response.

In 2018, according to Channel 12, Netanyahu turned down a proposal from the Shin Bet and then-defense minister Avigdor Liberman to kill senior Hamas leaders — including Sinwar and Deif — instead choosing to send then-Mossad chief Yossi Cohen to Qatar to convince the Gulf emirate to send money to Hamas in exchange for quiet in the south.

According to the report, Netanyahu chose to ignore intelligence that Qatar was also sending funds to Hamas’s military. He even sent the then-head of the IDF Southern Command Herzi Halevi to Qatar in 2020 to convince its leaders to keep funding Hamas after Doha indicated it wanted to stop sending money to the terror group.

Netanyahu also ruled against plans to kill Palestinian Islamic Jihad leaders and West Bank Hamas terrorists, along with an opportunity to assassinate the powerful Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps leader Qassem Soleimani, according to the report.

Soleimani was assassinated in 2020 in a US drone strike. Then-US president Donald Trump has since said that Netanyahu had “disappointed” him on this matter and that he had wrongly sought to take credit for the assassination.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s legal team on Sunday requested a new, 15-day postponement of the beginning of his testimony in court in his ongoing criminal trial, saying that despite their best efforts, the prime minister and his defense attorneys will not be prepared by the scheduled date of December 2.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu’s defense team requested a 10-week delay, but the court rejected the request, saying it had given him five months to prepare when it originally scheduled the date back in July.

Netanyahu’s lawyers said that since the court rejected that request on November 13, and even in the months before that, they and the prime minister had made “a supreme effort” to prepare for his giving testimony, including daily meetings at very late hours.

“Despite this supreme effort, the defense is not prepared, and will not be able to meet the goal of being prepared, for beginning the defense by December 2,” Netanyahu’s defense team said.

His lawyers also said that preparations were further encumbered by the decision by the International Criminal Court on Thursday to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for war crimes and crimes against humanity

The prime minister has been charged with fraud and breach of trust in two cases and bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in a third. He was indicted almost five years ago, in January 2020, and the trial began in May of that year.

“Riding a shared bike from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng for breakfast. Youth is meant for enjoying, going wild and having endless energy,” a student rider wrote on Douyin, TikTok’s sister app in China, in a post that garnered nearly 250,000 likes.

Eager to attract more tourists and cash in on its newfound internet fame, Kaifeng went out of its way to welcome the students, including offering free entry to tourist sites.

State media also chimed in to cheer the students’ journey as showing the “passion of youth.”

“What began as a spontaneous trip for dumplings has turned into a symbol of youthful energy and the joy of shared experiences, making the early-morning streets of Henan come alive in a new and unexpected way,” said a report carried on the English website of the People’s Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party.

“I met so many people just like me along the way – some carrying flags, others with music playing, and even some singing together,” a student from Henan University toldthe People’s Daily. “When we hit an uphill climb, everyone cheered each other on. We didn’t know each other, but we felt like comrades.”

The craze – and the ensuing crackdown – has divided opinion on the Chinese internet.

Some blamed the students for overwhelming Kaifeng and causing trouble to residents. Others said local authorities should have been better prepared for the influx of students before they jumped in to promote the trend.

“The local tourism bureau wants to cash in on the trend but isn’t prepared with necessary measures,” said a comment on microblogging site Weibo.

But seeking fun or chasing discounts were not the only motivations for making the hourslong journey. For some students, it also provided a rare escape from their anxiety about the grim job market and uncertain future amid a slowing economy.

A final year university student in Zhengzhou told the state-run West China City Daily that she was so busy with job hunting that she felt trapped in a “bottomless pit.”

She went for a night ride to Kaifeng with a friend on November 3, after reading about the trend on social media.

“Night cycling feels like an adventure,” she told the newspaper, adding that all her anxiety and worries melted away as she listened to music and chatted with her friend during the journey.

“In that moment, I wished I could just keep riding and never return to reality.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s legal team on Sunday requested a new, 15-day postponement of the beginning of his testimony in court in his ongoing criminal trial, saying that despite their best efforts, the prime minister and his defense attorneys will not be prepared by the scheduled date of December 2.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu’s defense team requested a 10-week delay, but the court rejected the request, saying it had given him five months to prepare when it originally scheduled the date back in July.

“Electricity supplies are at risk from freezing temperatures that threaten reliable operation of BPS [bulk power systems] generators, fuel supply issues for natural-gas-fired generation, and wind and solar resource energy limitations,” the report states.

A new report by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), which assesses the United States and Canada’s grid reliability, finds that much of the central and eastern U.S. could experience blackouts should a significant and lasting cold snap descend on the nation.

“Electricity supplies are at risk from freezing temperatures that threaten reliable operation of BPS [bulk power systems] generators, fuel supply issues for natural-gas-fired generation, and wind and solar resource energy limitations,” the report warned.

NERC has been warning for years that increased reliance on unreliable wind and solar threaten grid reliability, but the “2024-2025 Winter Reliability Assessment" explains that as coal resources diminish and the U.S. becomes more reliant on natural gas, pipeline infrastructure may not be adequate to ensure a secure supply to homes and generators.

With the U.S. Energy Information Administration anticipating a colder winter this year, the problem is compounded, according to the report released Thursday.

“Natural-gas-fired power generator availability and output can be threatened when natural gas supplies are insufficient or when the flow of fuel is unable to be maintained,” the report warns.

The areas under the greatest risk of blackouts are those where coal- and natural gas-fired power plants have been taken offline, as well as those who have limited pipeline capacity to ensure secure supplies of natural gas.

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), which covers 15 states over the Midwest, northern Great Plains, and south-central U.S., reduced its coal- and natural gas-fired generators by 5 gigawatts since last year. NERC warns that is going to create problems should there be a serious cold snap.

“With fewer internal dispatchable resources and increasing reliance on wind and imports, the risk of supply shortfall in winter has increased in MISO,” the report said.

The average American home consumes approximately 899,000 watt hours per month.k Homes consume electricity at different rates during different times of the day, so it’s hard to say, especially with intermittent wind and solar, how many homes could be powered with 5 gigawatts of capacity.

Five gigawatts of electricity generation running for 1 hour could power 50 million 100-watt lightbulbs for one hour.

The Southwest Power Pool, which covers a stretch of the central Great Plains, according to the NERC report, has lost 4 gigawatts of generation capacity from last year. Of that amount, 2 gigawatts is from adjustments in wind and solar capacity, which has a lower energy value during the winter season.

New York and New England both face increased risk of blackouts, according to NERC, due to increased dependency on unreliable wind and solar resources, as well as pipeline issues. PJM, which covers all or parts of a dozen states south of Pennsylvania, including the District of Columbia, is facing litigation over a natural gas pipeline expansion project. If the litigation shuts down the facilities, the PJM area could see problems, the report states.

Natural gas producers, however, disputed some of the report’s conclusions, Utility Dive reports. Dena Wiggins, president and CEO of the Natural Gas Supply Association NGSA), said in a statement that its members “take a multitude of proactive measures to prepare for winter weather so that we can provide safe and reliable service to our customers.”

A NGSA fact sheet details some of the actions the members have taken, including improved communications, increased protection of facilities and equipment, and post-event analysis to track performance and improve weatherization practices.

Authorities in China are cracking down on a popular new fad – nighttime bike riding – after tens of thousands of students and others clogged highways and streetsbetween the cities of Zhengzhou and Kaifeng in central Henan province.

Kaifeng is known for its historic sites and famous dumplings, and the trend of making the 80-kilometer (50-mile) trekbetween the two cities peaked in popularity over the past week with some estimating that as many as 200,000 set out on a "Night Ride to Kaifeng" last Friday.

In response, schools are instituting curfews, police are shutting down bike lanes in the name of public safety andmany on social media are debating whether the mass movement was just an expression of youthful lust for life, government policy gone wrong or a subtle form of protest. Or perhaps a mix of all of the above.

In video posts on social media, =many waved Chinese flags and sang the national anthem while Kaifeng residents lined up along the route to welcome them. No anti-government or other signs or slogans could be seen==.

Some observerscompared the scale of "Night Ride to Kaifeng" gatherings to the "White Paper Movement" during the pandemic, when thousands took to the streets holding up blank sheets of paper to voice their frustration with China's stringent COVID-19 lockdowns and policies.

On the rides, one rider was seen flying a flag that read "Freedom"while others waved China's flag or held signs that read:"The reunification of the motherland is essential and inevitable."There were no protests during the rides, but when many cyclists finished the trek they abandoned their bicycles, clogging city streets.

Chen, a student in Zhengzhou who did not want to give his full name for fear of government reprisal, said he saw the cycling convoy on Nov. 8 as it left the capital.

He told VOA that while students on the surface were showing their patriotism, the overall atmosphere was rather "eerie."

"Indeed, many people were holding the [Chinese] national flag andsinging the national anthem, but they didn't look proud; instead, most of them were expressionless," Chen said. "And it wasn't even a particularly significant day, so why this display? It's very thought-provoking."

The night cycling activity has been fully halted, and many universitiesin Henan have implemented curfews, sparking strong backlash among students.

Several universities in Henannotified students to return to campus by a set deadline and announced lockdown measures prohibiting students from leaving. Some universities informed students that the Henan Provincial Department of Education and school administratorsbelieved a large number of people and even "anti-social elements" or "foreign adversaries" had joined last week's night ride.

There were alsounsubstantiated claims circulating on China's social media that authorities characterized the students' actions as a "political movement," and some universities compared the night ride to the past "riots in Hong Kong."

To "cool down" the situation, many universities in Henan reportedly imposed strict closed management, with some even implementing full lockdowns, according to social media posts on Weibo and X. Online posts suggested that Henan University of Engineering introduced a temporary exit pass system that bars students from leaving campus unless absolutely necessary.

Staff at Henan Institute of Economics and Trade told VOAthat parents need to contact school counselors for students to gain approval to leave campus. The Henan Provincial Department of Education did not answer the phone when VOA reached out for comment.

A graduate student from Shandong, surnamed Sun, criticized the response from Henan universities saying it was as if they were returning to pandemic-style lockdown measures. Sun did not want to give his full name while speaking freely to foreign media.

"The school's management during the pandemic actually created many aftereffects. Every student had to scan their face to leave, which certainly made students uncomfortable. Why should I be subjected to this control just for going off-campus? The school's management is irrational and lacks justification."

On Nov. 9, traffic police in Zhengzhou and Kaifeng issued noticestemporarily banning nonmotorized vehicles on Zhengkai Avenue— a main road that links the two cities. They also cited the need to clear roads occupied by shared bikes and other items to ensure safe passage.

Henan's three major bike-sharing platforms, Hello, Qingju and Meituan, have announced that users may "not ride beyond designated areas." If a user exceeds a set time limit, the bike will be automatically locked and a dispatch fee will be applied, according to regulations, the companies said in statements posted online.

Despite the government lockdown, some students say they feel proud when recalling their participation in the "Night Ride to Kaifeng."

Putin Signs Law Banning Adoption of Children to Citizens of Countries Allowing Gender Transition
