Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Solar power glut boosts California electric bills. Other states reap the benefits

Green energy paid for by California electricity customers is sent away, lowering bills for residents of other states.

California is making so much solar energy that large commercial operators are increasingly forced to stop production, raising questions about the state’s costly plan to shift entirely to carbon-free sources of electricity.

In the past 12 months, California’s solar farms have curtailed production of more than 3 million megawatt hours of solar energy, either on the orders of the state’s grid operator or because prices had plummeted because of the glut, according to an analysis of data by The Los Angeles Times.

That’s enough to power 518,000 California homes for a year, based on average electricity usage.

The amount of curtailed solar power has more than doubled from 1.5 million megawatt hours in 2021, state records show, and is up eight times from levels in 2017.

The waste would have been even larger if California had not paid utilities in other states to take the excess solar energy, documents from the state’s grid operator show. That means green energy paid for by California electricity customers is sent away, lowering bills for residents of other states.

Arizona’s largest public utility reaped $69 million in savings last year by buying from the market California created to get rid of its excess solar power. The utility returned that money to its customers as a credit on their bills.

Also reaping profits are electricity traders, including banks and hedge funds.

The increasing oversupply of solar power has created a situation where energy traders can buy the excess at prices so low they become negative, said energy consultant Gary Ackerman, the former executive director of the Western Power Trading Forum. That means the solar plant is paying the traders to take it.

“This is all being underwritten by California ratepayers,” Ackerman said.

Newsom’s office said in a statement:

Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the appointment of Senator-elect Adam Schiff to complete the remaining U.S. Senate term of Senator Laphonza Butler following her resignation.

Senator Butler announced her resignation effective December 8, 2024, to ensure Californians have their duly elected representative seated as soon as possible. Senator-elect Schiff, who won election to a full term beginning in January, is expected to be sworn in on Monday, December 9, 2024.

Newsom appointed Butler after Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) died in office last year. Some black Democrats were furious with him for not appointing Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), who was running for Senate at the time against Schiff.

Once again, Schiff’s rise has meant that a black woman has had to step aside, which is sure to raise some eyebrows.

Schiff was in the news Sunday for another reason: President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News that he believes all of the members of the January 6 Committee — including Schiff — should be in jail for their abuses of civil liberties.

Jay-Z, the star rapper and entrepreneur whose real name is Shawn Carter, was accused in a lawsuit Sunday of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 allegedly along with Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The anonymous accuser, identified only as “Jane Doe,” said the assault happened after she was driven to an MTV Video Music Awards after-party.

The federal lawsuit was originally filed in October in the Southern District of New York, listing Combs as a defendant. It was refiled Sunday to include Carter.

Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee, who filed the suit, did not comment.

Carter called the allegations "idiotic" in a lengthy statement Sunday evening and alleged that Buzbee was engaged in unprofessional behavior.

"These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?" Carter said in a statement to NBC News. "These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case."

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on whether the office is pursuing the case when shown NBC News' report on the lawsuit.

Buzbee has filed several lawsuits in recent months — all have withheld their complainants’ names — accusing Combs of assault and rape. This is the first suit in which he has named another high-profile defendant.

In a statement, legal representatives for Combs called the suits "shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs."

"As his legal team has said before, Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process. In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor,” the statement read.

Federal prosecutors in New York criminally charged Combs in September with racketeering, sex trafficking and other offenses, and he is behind bars at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center after he was denied bail for a third time last month. His trial is scheduled for May 5.

Prosecutors said in a court hearing last month that they are in the process of potentially bringing more charges against Combs in a superseding indictment.

Before the lawsuit was refiled Sunday, "Carter received a letter from Plaintiff’s counsel requesting a mediation to resolve this matter," Buzbee wrote in the suit. In response to the letter, which NBC News has seen, Carter filed his own lawsuit against the accuser's attorneys, Buzbee wrote in the suit.

“You have made a terrible error in judgement thinking that all ‘celebrities’ are the same,” Carter added in his statement Sunday. “I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of the project of Brooklyn. We don’t play these types of games. We have very strict codes and honor. We protect children.”

The lawsuit claims that in 2000, when Doe was 13, Combs and Carter raped her at a house party after the MTV Video Music Awards in New York.

The lawsuit says a friend dropped her off at the VMAs at Radio City Music Hall. She did not have a ticket, and she approached various limousine drivers to try to gain access to the show or an after-party.

One driver, the lawsuit says, told her that he worked for Combs and that she “fit what Diddy was looking for.” He invited her to a party after the show and told her to return to his car later in the evening after he transported Carter and Combs, the suit says.

Later, the driver picked her up, the suit says, and after 20 minutes they arrived at a white house with a U-shaped driveway, the suit says. She had to sign a document she believed was a nondisclosure agreement on arrival — and did not receive a copy — to enter the party, which the suit says was filled with celebrities and people doing marijuana and cocaine.

She was offered a drink that made her feel “woozy, lightheaded and felt [like] she needed to lie down,” the suit says, and she went into a room to rest.

Shortly afterward, the suit says, Combs and Carter entered the room with Combs saying, “You are ready to party!”

That’s when, she alleges, Carter removed her clothes, held her down and raped her while Combs and an unnamed female celebrity watched. She says Combs also raped her as Carter and the woman looked on.

The suit says that she was able to resist being forced to perform oral sex on Combs by hitting him in the neck and that he “stopped.”…

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - A federal prosecutor told jurors Wednesday that political fundraiser Ed Buck gave large amounts of methamphetamine to two men who overdosed and died at his West Hollywood apartment, but the defense countered that the defendant did nothing to cause the deaths.

Defense attorney Chris Darden, in his opening statement in Buck's trial, told the jury that his client was a victim of "manipulative people" who took advantage of his generosity in order to get free drugs and money.

Darden alleged that underlying medical conditions hastened the deaths of Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, not the drugs they may have ingested in Buck's presence.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Norell alleged that Buck was "obsessed" with "party and play," a term used by some gay men to describe a sexual encounter involving drugs.

"The party is the drugs, the play is the sex," Norell said in her opening statement. "If they didn't party, he wasn't interested."

Buck faces nine felony counts, including two counts of distribution of controlled substances resulting in death stemming from the deaths of the 26- year-old Moore in July 2017 and the 55-year-old Dean in January 2019. If convicted, each of the two charges carries 20-year mandatory minimums.

Buck is additionally charged with knowingly enticing Moore to travel to Los Angeles to engage in prostitution.

Buck also faces a second count of enticing a different man to travel with the same intent; one count of knowingly and intentionally distributing methamphetamine; and one count of using his West Hollywood apartment for the purpose of distributing narcotics such as methamphetamine, and the sedatives gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and clonazepam.

Prosecutors allege Buck had a "fetish" for paying Black men he met online to smoke and shoot methamphetamine, sometimes to the point of unconsciousness. He also faces state charges of running a drug den, but the federal case is proceeding first.

The defense alleges that Buck was "selected" for prosecution for unexplained reasons. Party and play, Darden told the jury, is "conduct millions of people engage in."

Buck, 66, appeared to fidget as Norell described repeated multi-gram drug buys from a dealer who the prosecutor said would take the stand to tell of Buck's history of at least 20 methamphetamine purchases.

According to Norell, Buck's alleged "ritual" involved injecting men "over and over" with methamphetamine, and having them model underwear for him.

She alleged that even after Moore died, Buck "continued to insist that his dates get as high as possible."

Darden, however, told the seven-woman, five-man jury there is no evidence showing that "anyone was forced" to go to Buck's apartment "for whatever reason."

A prosecution trial memorandum alleges Buck lured vulnerable, homeless gay men, who were addicted to drugs or working as escorts to his Laurel Avenue apartment, where he provided drugs and money in exchange for sexual activity.

Darden countered that some of the men who showed up at Buck's doorstep were "convicted felons with every reason to exaggerate their experiences" with Buck.

After the deaths of Moore and Dean, Black Lives Matter and the media "got involved" and word got out that men who had met Buck should come forward with their stories, Darden said.

Darden, best known for being part of the prosecution team in the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, described his current client as an advocate for LGBTQ and Black civil rights, animal rights, and a supporter of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Buck "did nothing to cause the death of any person," Darden said in his opening statement to the jury.

Craig Sinclair, a 30-year-old formerly homeless man, told the jury of being introduced to Buck through a friend in 2018 who said he could "get money" from Buck.

Sinclair, the first prosecution witness, said he was told Buck "wanted someone to prance around in underwear and smoke drugs with him" in exchange for $200 "every time I would come over. … I did not want to be on the streets."

The money meant "a place to shower, to lay my head, and some food in my mouth," Sinclair testified.

Sinclair said he was living in a dangerous homeless encampment at the time and welcomed the opportunity to make some cash. But, he said, he grew frightened when Buck pressured him to inject methamphetamine and GHB, which he refused to do.

At one point, Sinclair told the jury, he passed out after smoking methamphetamine, only to awaken to find Buck "sitting on me and … injecting me with crystal meth."

Sinclair testified that Buck "liked to see me where I was barely able to stand, barely conscious," and bought him gifts as long as he complied with the defendant's "fetish."

Buck "came off as an actual friend in the beginning, but his true colors showed as I got to know him," Sinclair said.

Under cross-examination, Sinclair admitted that he wasn't forced to go to Buck's apartment. However, he blamed Buck for helping to make him an addict because of "all the drugs that were pushed on me" at the apartment.

Darden retorted, "Is there anything else in your life that you want to blame on Ed Buck?"

The second witness, Liam Sacks, a neighbor of Buck's between 2016 and 2019, said he noticed the defendant had many more visitors than most people, especially late at night.

Sacks said Buck once told him that the young males who would visit his apartment were his "clients. He said he was some kind of social worker."

Sacks testified that in July 2017, he saw paramedics responding to a death at Buck's home, which turned out to be Moore. In the days that followed, the stream of visitors slowed down, "then gradually picked up again," Sacks said on the stand.

Buck was arrested in September 2019 after being charged in federal court with providing the methamphetamine that led to the overdose death of Moore. He was indicted weeks later in connection with the death of Dean.

Buck has been in custody at a downtown federal lockup since his arrest.

The trial is expected to last between eight and 10 days.
