WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and U.S. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Repeal the TikTok Ban Act. The bill would repeal the TikTok divestiture law as well as ensure that any existing designation has no force or effect.

 

“They tell you this is about China. About security. About safety. That’s a lie. This is about control. About fear. About silencing you. A government that can ban an app, can ban a book. A government that can silence a platform, can silence a person. Today, it’s TikTok. Tomorrow, it’s your news. Next week, it’s your voice. Some politicians think the First Amendment has fine print. It doesn’t. The right to free speech doesn’t come with exceptions. Not for apps. Not for ideas. Not for politicians who think they know better than you. They don’t ban speech to protect you. They ban speech to control you,” said Dr. Rand Paul. “That’s why today, I’m introducing a bipartisan, bicameral bill to repeal the TikTok ban. If we don’t stop this now, where does it end? To every American who believes in liberty — stand up. Speak out. Fight back. Because freedom isn’t given. It’s taken.”

 

“The TikTok ban violates the free speech of 170 million Americans and threatens the livelihoods of creators and small business owners. When the app went down temporarily because of the ban, I heard from a small business owner in Mississippi who saw their sales dramatically decline. It’s hurting ordinary people. Repealing the ban will help ensure that TikTok does not go dark again. I thank Senator Paul for his leadership,” said Rep. Ro Khanna.

Dr. Paul and Rep. Khanna, along with Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA), earlier this month submitted a bipartisan, bicameral amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to reverse the D.C. Circuit Court’s decision in TikTok Inc. v. Garland, which upheld a TikTok ban established under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.

 

Dr. Paul has been outspoken against the TikTok ban from the beginning, as it sets a dangerous precedent in silencing and undermining the First Amendment rights of over 170 million. Dr. Paul’s objections to this ban comes from a commitment to defend our Constitutional rights and prevent government censorship.

Yep. Thought I'd been had. Then they removed POTUS Trump's Twitter account and as soon as I read that I yelled out "RED 2!" when that marker was in fact "RED 1." Chief Justice Roberts Faces Criticism After Rushing Donald Trump’s Oath of Office

 

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is facing heavy criticism after he began administering the oath of office to President Donald Trump before First Lady Melania Trump could be next to him with the Trump and Lincoln Bibles.

 

Because of the hiccup, it appears that Trump’s left hand did not reach the Bibles, which is not a constitutional requirement but a long-standing tradition. His right hand was raised to God.

A Border Patrol agent in northern Vermont was fatally shot in the neck by what is reported to be an illegal immigrant, just after President Donald Trump was being sworn in hundreds of miles away in Washington on a promise to deem the border crisis a "national emergency" on his first day in office.

NewsNation's Ali Bradley reported Monday that the border agent was shot while conducting a traffic stop. The shooter, whom Bradley referred to as a "visa overstay," was also reportedly killed.

Navy Relieves Another Information Warfare School Commander in Unrelated Firing

 

The Navy has relieved the commanding officer of a Norfolk, Virginia-based school for its information warfare sailors, a statement announced Thursday.

 

Cmdr. Sarah Quemada was relieved as commander of Naval Information Warfare Training Group Norfolk by Rear Adm. Brian Harding, commander of the Naval Information Warfighting Development Center.

 

Quemada is the second commander of a Naval Information Warfare Training command to be removed by the Navy in roughly two months. In November, the sea service also relieved the commander of the San Diego-based schoolhouse for information warfare.

 

Quemada's relief, which was officially over a "loss of confidence in her ability to command," is the first firing of a commanding officer this year for the Navy.

 

Loss of confidence is a boilerplate reason provided by the military services that can encompass anything from consistent poor performance by a command on key evaluations to personal actions like drunken driving.

 

A Navy official told Military.com on condition of anonymity that the reason for the firing was because there wasn't an overall good command climate at the school. They also stressed that Quemada's relief was not in any way related to the firing of the commander in San Diego.

 

It appears, based on public announcements, that the Navy fired 14 commanding officers in 2024. In 2023, the official relief total was 15. There are currently around 1,600 commanding officers in the active-duty Navy across all communities.

 

According to her Navy biography, Quemada enlisted in the service in 2005 as an information systems technician but quickly received a commission as an ensign in 2007.

 

After completing cryptologic officer training, she was assigned to Navy Information Operations Command in San Antonio, Texas. While there, she volunteered for a 390-day deployment to Afghanistan, where she performed "intelligence support to village stability operations."

 

She then served as the tactical information warfare officer aboard the destroyer USS McFaul, as well as completing tours supporting Carrier Strike Group Two and Amphibious Squadron Four.

 

One of her last assignments before taking command of the Virginia school in June 2023 was as the officer-in-charge for a Cryptologic Warfare Group Six detachment stationed in Digby, England.

 

Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Joint Commendation Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, her biography states.

 

According to the Navy's statement, Quemada has been temporarily reassigned to Naval Information Forces, while Capt. Steve McIntire will serve as the school's commanding officer until a permanent replacement is designated.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske Ousted as New Administration Begins

The head of the Transportation Security Administration said he was pushed out of President Trump’s new administration.

 

TSA Administrator David Pekoske told staff late Monday morning that he had been advised by Trump’s transition team that “my time as your Administrator will end at noon ET today,” the time of Trump’s swearing in, according to a farewell message viewed by The Wall Street Journal. CNN earlier reported on the staff message and Pekoske’s departure.

 

Trump named Pekoske, a former vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, as TSA administrator in 2017. President Biden re-upped him to a second five-year term in 2022. Pekoske said last year that he hoped to stay in the job. It was not immediately clear who would replace him. The Trump transition team didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump Admin Canceling Flights for 1,600+ Afghan Refugees

Nearly 1,660 Afghans cleared by the federal government to resettle in the U.S., including family members of active duty military personnel, are having their flights canceled under President Donald Trump's order suspending refugee programs, a U.S. official and a leading refugee resettlement advocate said Monday.

 

The group includes unaccompanied minors awaiting reunification with their families in the U.S. as well as Afghans at risk of Taliban retribution because they fought for the former U.S.-backed Afghan government, said Shawn VanDiver, head of the #AfghanEvac coalition of veterans and advocacy groups and the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

 

The decision also leaves in limbo thousands of other Afghans who have been approved for resettlement as refugees in the U.S. but have not yet been assigned flights from Afghanistan or from neighboring Pakistan, they said.

 

Trump made an immigration crackdown a major promise of his victorious 2024 election campaign, leaving the fate of refugee programs up in the air.

 

The White House and the State Department, which oversees refugee programs, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

 

"Afghans and advocates are panicking," said VanDiver. "I've had to recharge my phone four times already today because so many are calling me.

 

"We warned them that this was going to happen, but they did it anyway. We hope they will reconsider," he said of contacts with Trump's transition team.

 

VanDiver's organization is the main coalition that has been working with the U.S. government to evacuate and resettle Afghans in the U.S. since the Taliban seized Kabul as the last U.S. forces left Afghanistan in August 2021 after two decades of war.

 

Nearly 200,000 Afghans have been brought to the U.S. by former President Joe Biden's administration since the chaotic U.S. troop withdrawal from Kabul.

 

One of the dozens of executive orders Trump was to sign after being sworn in for a second term on Monday was to suspend U.S. refugee programs for at least four months, said an incoming Trump administration official, who requested anonymity.

 

"We know this means that unaccompanied children, (Afghan) partner forces who trained, fought and died or were injured alongside our troops, and families of active duty U.S. service members are going to be stuck," said VanDiver.

 

VanDiver and the U.S. official said that the Afghans approved to resettle as refugees in the U.S. were being removed from the manifests of flights they were due to take from Kabul between now and April.

 

They include nearly 200 family members of Afghan-American active duty U.S. service personnel born in the U.S. or of Afghans who came to the U.S., joined the military and became naturalized citizens, they said.

 

Those being removed from flights also include an unknown number of Afghans who fought for the former U.S.-backed Kabul government and some 200 unaccompanied children of Afghan refugees or Afghan parents whose children were brought alone to the United States during the U.S. withdrawal, said VanDiver and the U.S. official.

 

An unknown number of Afghans who qualified for refugee status because they worked for U.S. contractors or U.S.-affiliated organizations also are in the group, they said.

CBP One App Shuts Down, Migrants Weep at Border

Migrants awaiting entry at the U.S.-Mexico border broke down Monday after officials in President Donald Trump's administration shut down CBP One, a Biden-era border app that gave legal entry to nearly a million migrants with online appointments, reports the Daily Mail.

 

Several migrants who were waiting for their 1 p.m. CBP One parole appointments learned early Monday that the app had shut down. Washington Post reporter Arelis Hernandez shared video of Margelis Tinoco, a migrant from Colombia, sobbing after learning the news.

 

Cuban asylum seeker Yaime Perez, who was waiting to cross the Paso del Norte International Border Bridge from Ciudad Juarez to El Paso in Texas on Monday, was also filmed weeping, per the Daily Mail.

 

Trump in his inauguration speech said he would "declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places in which they came."

 

The CBP One app gave appointments to 1,450 people a day at eight border crossings to enter on "parole," which Biden used more than any president.

 

It was a critical piece of his administration's border strategy to create new immigration pathways while cracking down on people who enter illegally.

 

Supporters say it brought order to a chaotic border. Critics say it was a magnet for more people to come.

 

By midday Monday, it was gone.

 

Melanie Mendoza, 21, and her boyfriend told the Associated Press they left Venezuela over a year ago, spending more than $4,000 and traveling for a month, including walking for three days.

 

"We don't know what we are going to do," she said in Tijuana, Mexico, just on the other side of the border from San Diego.

The decision would place the United States alongside Iran, Libya and Yemen as the only countries in the world outside the 2015 pact, in which governments agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
